Jacob Waddell: Building hemp’s future, together A a material scientist, the possibilities of this natural material are exciting to me. Hemp has such high performing natural properties that it was used globally 100 years ago and then had its development stunted for 80 years. The innovations to come are exhilarating.
What was a win for your organization in the past year? The growth of our reputation has been immense. This has been accomplished through steady development. These steps have included having regular committee meetings, launching a monthly newsletter, relaunching the US Hemp Building Foundation, two successful virtual events, being involved in both the NHA SCoHO and USHRT lobbying efforts, and relaunching our website. Many of these activities created more values for our members and have prepared us for future growth.

Jamie Petty: Environmentally sound uses of hemp are key
M
y primary focus when I began learning about and advocating for hemp, was the belief that our farmers and soil were ready for another crop they could rotate with corn and soybeans, or utilize as a cover crop, for healthier soil and a diversified income stream. Thus, environmentally sound uses for hemp wood, and hemp filament, such as building materials, animal feed, etc., are key to completing the supply chain, while providing a sustainable, more healthy option.
What was a win for your organization in the past year? We survived COVID! It has been a difficult year, but one of the highlights was attending the annual Future Farmers of America Convention, as we always do. However, this year, our platform was much more visible thanks to partnering with National Hemp Association, New Holland, as well as Purdue Agronomy and Illinois Hemp Growers Association and the US Hemp Building Association. Rachel Berry’s
“We are discovering the many ways it will benefit, whether through carbon sequestration or minimizing the carbon.” Jamie Petty, Executive Director of Midwest Hemp Council hands-on hempcrete session and the table of examples for hemp insulation, hemp wood, hemp filament were the driver of increased interaction and interest from the FFA students and advisors. If hemp is to be our future, then we need to be educating the farmers and leaders of the future.
What is something about hemp building/construction/ processing you didn’t know a year ago? Primarily, the ultimate impact on carbon. Of course, I knew it was a healthier, more sustainable option -- but, we are discovering the many ways it will benefit, whether through carbon sequestration or
Jamie Petty, co-founder and Executive Director of Midwest Hemp Council, board treasurer. minimizing the carbon produced throughout the production process.
What challenges does the hemp building industry/ hemp industry face that they must overcome in the next five years? Frankly, the same as most things in the hemp industry: A regulatory structure that promotes the utilization of hemp. For building materials, this means building
standards and codes; then, developing a consistent quality supply chain such that feed stock growth meets demand for output of construction materials. These same issues apply whether you are talking hemp for animal feed, cannabinoids or other fiber uses. It is a nascent industry and we must be consistent, yet patient, while consistent and credible supply chains are developed, in conjunction with reasonable and appropriate regulations.

HEMP BUILDING DIRECTORY 2022
Unveiled: New hemp building products for 2022 BY JEAN LOTUS ttendees at the U.S. Hemp Building Summit in Austin, Texas, got a sneak peek of some of the new products and services in the works in the hemp building and construction world for 2022. Hemp building pioneers revealed new prototypes, plans and processes as the hemp building industry ramps up. The industrial hemp plant was legalized in the 2018 Farm Bill following 80 years of prohibition. New hemp-based construction materials and services on the scene will include imported hemp blocks, decking, insulation products, hemp building classes and multiple new regional processing centers popping up across the country.
A
Decarbonization in focus In 2022, the hemp building industry should get a boost from the federal government because the U.S. Department of Energy is taking a new look at hemp building materials, conference organizer Tommy Gibbons of Idaho-based Hempitecture, Inc. told attendees at the 2021 event. “Decarbonization is the one word that really gets the Department of Energy excited,” Gibbons said. Gibbons is participating in a two-year fellowship with the DOE’s Innovation Crossroads program at Oak Ridge National Lab in Tennessee. “They really see hemp as a tool to take carbon out of the air, turn it into value-added products and do that at scale. Decarbonization has become a huge focus of this administration 10 Hemp Building Direcctory | 2022
and this Department of Energy, they are willing to go all-in on that,” he added.
USA-sourced HempWool insulation batts, hempcrete blocks, insulative sheathing Coming in 2022 from Hempitecture will be domestically sourced HempWool insulation batts manufactured at the company’s new Magic Valley, Idaho manufacturing facility. The batts will be made from American-grown hemp processed by IND HEMP in Montana. Hempitecture will also import multiple shipping containers of Belgium-based IsoHemp’s 6” and 10” hempcrete blocks through the port of Houston to offer as an introductory product, starting in early 2022, Gibbons said. The company also received a $400,000 R & D grant from the Department of Energy for a hemp fiber continuous insulation sheathing product, now in development, to roll out in late 2022, Gibbons said. “We’ve been thinking for a long time, how can we compete with these incumbent insulation manufacturers? And the answer is beat them at every single product that they provide,” Gibbons added.
HempWood: New factories, fiberboard, structural timber and decking Greg Wilson of Murray, KY-based HempWood said the company sells its carbon-negative compressed hemp flooring
“Decarbonization is the one word that really gets the Department of Energy excited.” Tommy Gibbons Idaho-based Hempitecture, Inc. in multiple retail locations nationwide. Most recently, HempWood was used as shelving for a new BMW electric vehicle showroom opening in Beverly Hills. The company is also providing some components for the cars, Wilson said. HempWood has been used in California upscale cannabis dispensaries, as well as shelving for a Target store in San Francisco, Wilson said. “These big companies are starting to hear what everyone [in the hemp world] is saying,” Wilson told the crowd. The company also makes hardwood boards for furniture or lathing, similar to oak, and veneer for plywood cabinetry finishes. HempWood uses soy-based glue and has no off-gassing VOCs found in other flooring products, Wilson said. In 2022, the company is expanding with new factories planned in Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Poland, with other locations, possibly Montana, Missouri and Texas on the horizon, Wilson said. New products under development from HempWood include a hemp-based flat strand sheathing board similar to oriented strand board (OSB) which Wilson called “OHB,” as well as load-bearing laminated
HEMP BUILDING DIRECTORY 2022 “This will lighten our reliance on fossil fuels and make our existing home inventory healthier,” he said. McIntosh, a hemp insulation subcontractor, licensed the EREASY spray system from a French manufacturer and completed 10 different projects in six states in 2021, he said. All of those projects required hemp hurd and binder sourced from France, but In 2022, the EREASY will be manufactured in the United States, and sold by Americhanvre, along with a local binder from U.S. lime available in 2023, he said. Melissa Nelson of South Bend Industrial Hemp shakes hands with Ray Kaderli while socializing at the U.S. Hemp Building Summit in Austin, TX Oct., 2021. | Photo courtesy of Melissa Nelson veneer structural timber (LVL) that can be used for home elements such as rafters. Responding to the consumer demand and “10 to 20% of phone calls” asking for products that can be used outside, the company is developing recycled hemp bioplastic products, including a Trex-like decking product, Wilson said. “We’ll figure out how to do a waterproof flooring, decking, those types of things, using recycled plastics and our hemp sawdust,” he said.
Hempcrete masterclass, online carbon footprint tracker
Hemp Building summit keynote speaker, Canadian natural builder and carbon expert Chris Magwood has been busy promoting educational and policy output going into 2022. The author of one of the foremost hemp building books is starting 2022 with an online Hempcrete Masterclass through his nonprofit sustainable building school Endeavor Centre in Peterborough, Ontario. Magwood also co-authored a
Microsoft-financed report by the Carbon Leadership Forum advising the company to build new data centers with hemp and/or other natural materials. Magwood and nonprofit Builders for Climate Action have mapped out the steps to achieve net-zero carbon homes with Natural Resources Canada and will be rolling out the BEAM carbon footprint calculator in 2022 which can calculate embodied carbon in a building based on building materials. In 2022, Magwood will publish a new book, Build Beyond Zero: New Ideas for Carbon-Smart Architecture.
Hempcrete installation faster, more affordable Using a spray-apply system for hempcrete insulation has led to a democratization of hemp insulation allowing more projects to be finished faster and more efficiently, said Cameron McIntosh, of Pennsylvania-based Americhanrvre. Projects are completed in 60% less time and take 6-8 weeks to cure, as opposed to several months.
Hemp matchmaking, regional processing facilities Summit attendee and Texas-based real estate investor and hemp builder Ray Kaderli announced the formation of the Hemp Build Network, a referral and matchmaking service for homeowners and home builders seeking architects, engineers, supplies and other professional referrals. The company also hosted multiple hemp building workshops in Texas in November, co-sponsored by HempBuild Magazine. Acquiring the woody hemp hurd in the United States to build with hempcrete has been a challenge until this year, with builders importing the product from Europe and China. But multiple regional industrial hemp processing facilities are springing up, and a few were represented at the summit. At South Bend Industrial Hemp, in Great Bend, KS, co-founder and crop scientist Melissa Nelson said the company is currently processing 2021 fiber hemp grown by regional farmers. “The hurd is out the door as fast as we can process it.” 2022 | Hemp Building Direcctory 11

Todd File: Changing our impact on the environment What most interests you about hemp and hemp building, and why?
Hemp Building has the potential to be one of the many ways we can change our impact on the environment. I see this as a way to be involved in the potential changes.
What was a win for your company in the past year? The construction industry continues to
perform above expectations. As in the old saying “a rising tide lifts all boats,” we have seen more interest in the use of lime in hemp building than ever before.
What is something about hemp building/construction/ processing you didn’t know a year ago? The development of an ASTM Standard is in the works for hemp and lime, and it will
help pave the way for continued increase in usage.
What challenges does the hemp building industry face that it must overcome in the next five years? New technologies not only have to prove their performance, but they also must compete with current building products that do not want to lose market share.

HEMP BUILDING DIRECTORY 2022 LEADER PROFILE
Cameron McIntosh: “Consult, Build, Educate” to offset carbon footprint What most interests you about hemp and hemp building, and why? What is most interesting to me about hemp and hemp building is the potential for hemp building materials to substantially offset our national carbon footprint.
What was a win for your company in the past year? In the past year we installed 8,000 cubic feet of hempcrete on 10 different projects across six states with our Ereasy spray application system, representing approximately 76 metric tons of carbon sequestered in the buildings we insulated.
What is something about hemp building/construction/processing you didn’t know a year ago? That it is highly likely that we will be able to apply for carbon tax credits in the near future based on both the carbon sequestered by the crop as it grows and also for the offset of using a carbon sequestering building material instead of carbon intensive building materials.
What challenges does the hemp building industry face that it must overcome in the next five years? Domestic supplies for materials and equipment to lower the cost of building with hemp, and the potential pushback from established building material lobbies against hemp building materials as we gain popularity.

The chance we have to develop a “new” industry again and create so much economic opportunity for local supply chains.

What was a win for your organization in the past year? “We had continued success with our Hemp Test Acres Program, which we launched three years ago in order to ensure enough farmers learned to grow hemp fiber, as well as to test cultivars in our region.” Lori Daytner, VP of Program Development at DON Processing Having the number of processors needed to bring the cost of materials down to competitive levels will be a big help, but even more than that, I think getting awareness of hemp building products to the same level as say, organic produce, or environmentally sustainable goods, will be a real factor in mainstream adoption – and this is a key challenge.

Andrew Bish: Hemp is good for the soil and air quality What most interests you about hemp and hemp building and hemp growing and why? My background is in agriculture. I see hemp, good for our soil and air quality, as a strongly needed diversification tool for producers. Promoting and working with hemp as an alternative rotational crop is very rewarding, knowing that we can help people within the agriculture industry and even those who will never interact with agriculture outside of being a consumer of products. Regarding hemp building, the exciting part is finding ways to use this crop to make economic sense. If hemp were to clean our soils and air, but we couldn’t find another use for it, the crop wouldn’t become a mainstream commodity. Trying to save the world is great, but it’s economics that drives decision-making, and when we can couple those two things together, I get exceptionally excited.
What was a win for your company in the past year? The biggest win is our existence in general. We faced some very extreme pressures over this past year from multiple angles. Yet, we were able to persevere to the point where we are building out our second operating decortication line.

didn’t know a year ago?
Virtually everything in the building and construction aspects of hemp is new to me. I design, engineer, and manufac-
ture equipment with steel. Nevertheless, working with some of the different levels of grind and the other binding agents has been a real eye-opener after spending this past year helping develop what I believe will be some fantastic products.
What challenges does the hemp building industry face that it must overcome in the next five years? Standards. That’s the answer. We must overcome the lack of across-the-board standards from genetics to processed material to allow for market-based trading appropriately and thus commoditization to occur.

Sergiy “Doctor Hemphouse” Kovalenkov, CEO / CTO Hempire USA, Civil Engineer, Hemp Builder. Too much skepticism from the construction industry. Architects and builders sometimes don’t fully understand the entire potential of hemp-based products and therefore are afraid to use them. Costs of the materials and services are still too high, so the price has to come down to make a revolution. Not enough biomass is available and not many hemp processing facilities are currently installed to cope with high demand and mass production/ construction.

Paul “River” Richardson: Building healthy hemp homes What most interests you about hemp and hemp building, and why? After 2 decades and in over 30 countries working in the toxic construction industry, what interests me most about hemp is its ability to create living environments that are at once ultra healthy, and beautiful, good for the earth – and supporting regenerative farming practices. After designing and managing some prestigious projects internationally, beauty was always my main responsibility as an architect and manager. I created and implemented beauty in 5-star luxury projects. Sadly behind the façades of these multi-million dollar projects were unhealthy materials, systems and processes used to build them. Working with hemp, we see the building materials growing in the fields, whilst nourishing and detoxifying the soil. Hemp is simply processed into healthy biomass that we can use to create these breathing, self-regulating living environments. Hemp has opened a window into a world that re-enables a new dialogue around what it means to dwell in tune and balance with nature, whilst honoring our own needs as stewards on the living soil.
What was a win for your company in the past year? 2021 saw the release of the much anticipated Discovery Channel documentary on our Hemp Cottage project in CA, ‘Building Off the Grid.’ We also launched our Hemp Training 34 Hemp Building Direcctory | 2022

Probably the most challenging part delaying the onset of this abundant industry is the processing of the hemp. Farmers can quite easily switch to growing hemp, but without the ability to process, there are limited ways for raw materials to get onto the marketplace.

Wilfredo Paz Bermudez: Pushing hemp into the mainstream
I
’m doing what I can as an engineer to push industrial hemp into the mainstream construction industry. My firm is licensed in California (and soon other states) to design residential, commercial, and industrial facilities. We’re applying our existing knowledge of construction and engineering design towards industrial hemp applications. There are currently three areas of growth we’re focused on: code compliant engineered designs, material research, and improving construction practices. As a licensed civil engineer, my role in the hemp industry transcends beyond my duties within my company. We are helping material suppliers seek required approvals from local building departments, connecting them with architects, builders, and the general public. We also need to help educate builders, architects, and other engineers as to how to safely and effectively construct hemp products. I personally feel responsible for positioning my firm to contribute to tangible positive change to combat climate change and socio-economic injustice. My last name, “Paz” translates to “Peace”, so our company is trying to help contribute to the hemp industry and the overall well being of the planet “piece by peace.”
What most interests you about hemp and hemp building and why? Innovative, sustainable building materials have been something our firm has been working on since we were founded. We have a deep interest in reducing the 38 Hemp Building Direcctory | 2022
We also didn’t know how involved and passionate the hemp community is. We’re happy to be a part of it.
What challenges does the hemp building industry face that it must overcome in the next five years?
Wilfredo Paz Bermudez, ENV. SP., P.E., Founder Piece by Paz construction industry’s carbon footprint. Hemp and hemp construction products can significantly contribute to this carbon reduction. There’s sufficient data to back that statement. We just need to compile the data, be creative, and push forward.
What was a win for your company in the past year? One of our major wins was connecting with the folks of Hemp Build Mag. They have connected us with other hemp professionals all over the industry. In my experience with other construction materials organizations, this has been the friendliest and easiest to talk to.
What is something about hemp building/construction/processing you didn’t know a year ago? One year ago, I didn’t realize the countless benefits hemp has. I didn’t know how versatile it is and how effective it is as a building material. We’re still uncovering all of hemp’s properties and benefits.
The three major challenges we see are: 1. Rogue builders 2. Establishing building standards 3. Re-inventing the wheel Rogue builders who want to construct with hemp products without engineered designs and building permits. This type of rogue construction can signal to skeptics that we are trying to bypass the existing building and safety standards because we can’t meet them. On the contrary, we can significantly exceed today’s building standards and we have no reason to hide from building officials. We need to collectively establish agreedupon industry standards. This will help streamline approval processes and construction. We don’t want individuals and companies all over the world reinventing the wheel by creating their own version of the same thing. We of course want to allow individuals to be creative and to have enough freedom with their construction projects, but we need to build off of each other as an industry. We need to build off each other to improve and innovate.

Angel Romero and Arturo Amaro: Planting the seeds for the future Angel: As a second
generation builder working in stucco for 10 years alongside my father, this transition has given me new love for building in general.
What most interests you about hemp and hemp building and hemp growing and why? Angel: The most interesting part about building with hemp is watching the process break down from stalk to hurd. From being able to plant those first couple of seeds to being able to build an exterior/interior wall is humbling.
Arturo: Growing
hemp, amazing for the environment and I love farming! Building with hemp, renewable fireproof carbon negative building material! What interests me the most is the application of hempcrete and hempsulation in greener building in the housing industry in the US.
What was a win for your company in the past year? Angel: A win for our company this last year was being able to learn from others in this amazing industry. Being trained by Mattie Mead and gaining Hempitec-

“Being trained by Mattie Mead and gaining Hempitecture knowledge really helped us find where we belong in the hemp industry.” Angel Romero Jr. co-founder and lead builder for StucGoCrete of my everyday life.
Arturo: How great
and supportive not just the local community usually is of builds but the support from the surrounding hemp community is greatly reassuring and supportive
of positive movements in the industry.
What challenges does the hemp building industry face that it must overcome in the next five years? Angel: Personally I
feel over the next few years the hemp industry will have to find rules and regulations to be able to teach many more young builders the correct fundamentals to help build more eco-friendly homes. Finding the happy medium between your conventional building and building with hemp will be a fun challenge we will overcome as an industry.

Karen Rugg: Affordable, sustainable and with beauty

shley Bice and I are co-owners of Perennial Building, a women-owned general contracting company based in Sisters, Oregon. Perennial Building provides GC services for new builds, remodels and hemp lime construction, as well as provides consulting for these types of projects. We’re on a mission to foster sustainability, equity and community through the built environment and to build beautiful things along the way.
What most interests you about hemp and hemp building, and why? I’ve been interested in housing affordability, sustainability and health equity since graduate school. Hemp building has the potential to address all three of these issues. Availability of domestic material supply will need to increase in order to decrease costs, thereby making hemp lime housing more affordable, but once the supply and infrastructure is in place in the US, I believe we’ll have a robust industry that can make great strides in these three areas.
What was a win for your company in the past year? Perennial Building completed a large material importing transaction that had several road bumps and delays along the way. Now we’re in the position to pull the trigger on a large hemp build without worrying about material delays.
What is something about hemp building/construc-
great things about building with hemp at this moment is there are so many possibilities. It’s a new industry in this country and everyone in the hemp building space is looking for ways to do it as well as possible. This encourages the development of many great building techniques.
What challenges does the hemp building industry face that it must overcome in the next five years? Karen Rugg and Ashley Bice are co-owners of Perennial Building, a general contracting company based in Sisters Oregon.

Three main challenges this industry must overcome are: 1) Education: educating farmers, processors, AEDs, vendors, subcontractors, building officials, and people that live in homes... essentially, most everyone. We need to make hemp building a part of the standard building vernacular in the US 2) Supply Chain: a robust farming and processing infrastructure will need to be developed in order for hemp building to be more easily accessible to those building. 3) Building Certifications: while some jurisdictions will allow for hemp building based on information provided during a specific project’s permitting approval process, this requires additional effort and information on the part of the person applying for the permit. In some cases, this additional information still won’t be enough to convince the jurisdiction to give the okay to build with hemp. Inclusion into standard certifications (i.e. ICC, IRC, et al) will be key to make the permitting process successful across the United States. 2022 | Hemp Building Direcctory 43

Steve Allin: Focused on design details, training and research What is your position at the International Hemp Building Assn. and what do you do?
I am the director, a role that includes making decisions of policy and event organizing while leading a team of co-directors who are focused on other elements such as design details, worker training, scientific research and agricultural matters.
What most interests you about hemp and hemp building, and why? Hemp has wide-ranging potential for providing solutions to many of the problems currently encountered in existing buildings and for those we intend to build.
What was a win for your
organization in the past year? There weren’t many but in some ways it was a time to recuperate and reflect on what is most important.
What is something about hemp building/construction/processing you didn’t know a year ago? As I have been writing a new book I have been in contact with hemp builders all over the world realizing in the process how fast the technology is spreading internationally.
What challenges does the hemp building industry face that it must overcome in the next five years?

Lela Vandavier: Bringing hemp construction materials to consumers What is your position at
Thirty Six Nine and what do you do? For the past 13 years, I have operated my consulting business, offering project management and accounting services to a variety of design & build clients, including developers, architects, engineers, GCs, designers and multiple subcontractors throughout California. In 2021, I decided to pivot my business model and joined a group of manufacturers’ reps, called Vision Sales Group.
What most interests you about hemp and hemp building and why? I became aware of the applications for hemp building materials in 2018 while working on a start-up for a cannabis/ hemp testing lab. I stumbled upon the word “hempcrete”, while doing some project related research. I was hooked from that day forward and have been following the growth of this emerging market, as a passion project, ever since. Once the barriers to scale are overcome, I expect hemp building materials to be a complete game-changer for the construction industry.
What was a win for your organization in the past year? My contribution to moving this industry forward will be best served in a sales capacity for those manufacturers that have products ready for retail. 52 Hemp Building Direcctory | 2022
I’m already repping other lines of more traditional building materials, some green – some not. My goal now is to narrow the focus to create a “package” of lines that achieve the highest levels of sustainability. Eventually, I could see my role evolving into distribution, as the industry progresses. I also envision creating a showroom type environment for green building products.
What challenges does the hemp building industry/hemp industry face that they must overcome in the next five years? The most immediate challenge, from my perspective, is getting those ICC codes in effect. I truly applaud the efforts of the USHBA on this front, it’s a daunting task that requires an enormous amount of perseverance. Hopefully, by the time this goes to print, that goal will have been achieved. Once these materials are acknowledged as meeting the standard requirements to resolve liability issues, architects and GC’s can embrace them and begin to spec them with more confidence. The next driver will be informing/educating the consumer market to build demand. Fortunately, it’s not a hard sell, with all the incredible benefits these products have to offer. And what a perfect time to tell the “Made in America” story for those manufacturers who are able to source and produce here at home.

Mattie Mead: Hemp can transform the built environment What is your position at Hempitecture, Inc. and what do you do? Founder and CEO. We all wear lots of hats at Hempitecture, as a small team in an emerging and dynamic industry. Generally my role is relationships, internal and external, as well as strategy, brand awareness, marketing, and product. My background is in architecture and construction, so I have a deep passion for sustainability in the built environment. That transcends to the materials Hempitecture offers, and soon, the manufacturing of materials here in the USA to help support the growth of the hemp industry, as well as the sustainable building materials industry.
What most interests you about hemp and hemp building and why? My interest in hemp building originates from a 2012 thesis study I did as an undergraduate student studying architecture and environmental sciences. During this time I was curious as to how we could make more sustainable materials using earthen materials. I was amazed to learn about the potential of industrial hemp as a low carbon, rapidly renewable raw material that could lend to higher performing, more sustainable building materials. Today, this interest has transformed into a passion that helps guide Hempitecture towards being industry leaders in the hemp building materials space. What most interests me today in the hemp building materials space is 54 Hemp Building Direcctory | 2022

What is something about hemp building/construction/processing you didn’t know a year ago? Initially I was skeptical that the building industry would ever come around to the idea of using new materials and techniques. hemp building industry face that it must overcome in the next five years? I think that the reputation of the hemp building industry needs to mature. It is still viewed in a counter-culture light, and that ill-cast light threatens the legitimacy of the hemp building industry. I think we want to be taken seriously like other natural material industries, such as cotton, wood pulp, and other natural fibers. To do so, we should study and emulate the marketing, leadership, and messaging of these related industries.

Wolf Jordan: Hemp building pioneer
W
olf Jordan is one of Europe’s leading experts in the production of high quality natural paints, plasters and renders for the eco-construction industry. He is the founder and sole owner of Belgium-based Wolf Jordan & Co., which also produces binder formulas for hempcrete construction, and natural oils and waxes for wood and stone. Wolf is an old-world craftsman with more than 36 years’ experience, a lecturer, educator and innovator who has worked on natural building projects all over the world.
Who would you say are the real pioneers of modern day hemp building in Europe? I’d point to Yves Kuhn with his project “Canosmose” in the 1990s. Then came Britain with the first real big commercial building for the Adnams Brewery, which was something of a breakthrough. Steve Allin started the International Hemp Building Association, and wrote “Building with Hemp,” still the standard book for anyone who wants to work with hemp and
Wolf Jordan
“Hemp is the second fastest growing plant, sequestering incredible amounts of CO2. That’s one of the main reasons building with hemp is so revolutionary.” Wolf Jordan, Founder of Wolf Jordan & Co. lime.
What kind of material do you think makes for the optimal frame for hempcrete construction? Hemp is the second fastest growing plant, sequestering incredible amounts of CO2. That’s one of the main reasons building with hemp is so revolutionary. The plant that grows even faster is bamboo. So, the com-
bination of hemp with bamboo is an ecological blessing. Even here in Europe you can grow bamboo you could use for frame structures.
What are the mistakes to be avoided in hempcrete construction? Often the binding process goes wrong due to a lack of water, or a mixture drying too fast, so the proper amount of water is also critical. And when you use formwork, pay attention that the mixture is well and evenly tampered. The composition of the hemp shivs should be perfect. The lime should be the finest hydrated lime you can buy.
How do you go about sourcing the pigments for your line of natural paints?
As much as possible, I go directly to the producers of the ingredients that I use. Most of them are sold by the pallet load, but the pigments are usually about smaller amounts. There are still a few natural pigment producers in France, besides I love France, so I regularly drive over to buy directly from them.
Who are the end users of your natural paints? Practically all my products go B2B, to entrepreneurs, building and decorating companies, as well as specialized shops. Most end users are people who want to finish their houses with natural materials. There are also some institutions, like schools and historical monuments are done with my products.
How would you describe the level of enthusiasm now around hemp construction? Four decades ago, hemp construction still needed to be invented. Whereas natural building in general was considered as some weird extravagance, this has totally changed.

HEMP BUILDING DIRECTORY 2022 LEADER PROFILE
Chris Magwood: Plant-based hemp materials can solve climate change What do you do? On the research side, I produce the books, guides and other materials that we hope will help people make the best possible building decisions. These days, much of the research is focused on the carbon footprint of building materials, and how plant-based materials can help to reverse the effects of climate change. On the program side, I help design and instruct the courses we offer, including our new online Hempcrete Masterclass.
What most interests you about hemp and hemp building, and why? I was contacted by a nearby farmer who started growing hemp as soon as it became legal in Canada, in 1998. I immediately saw the hemp straw bales he was producing as an ideal option for straw bale building, and made quite a few buildings with these bales. The fiber and hurd – separately or together – had some remarkable properties and we began chopping up the stalks in the bales to make early versions of hempcrete and hemp plaster. I really like the notion that a single plant can potentially provide food, textiles and building material, while performing some great ecosystem services like sequestering carbon in the soil. Having grown up in a region of marginal quality farmland, I appreciate the willingness of hemp to grow well in areas that don’t necessarily support typical agricultural crops.
What was a win for your company in the past year? 66 Hemp Building Direcctory | 2022
Chris Magwood, Director of Research & Programs, Endeavour Centre and Builders for Climate Action. We put together our first online course, the Hempcrete Masterclass, and it was really well received by our first cohort of students. We were very concerned that the quality of instruction in our online course needed to match the quality of our in-person offerings. It took a long time to plan it out and put it together, but the students really liked it a lot, and that felt like a real win.
What is something about hemp building/construction/processing you didn’t know a year ago? I continue to learn a lot from the farming community. My interest lies in the qualities of the material as it relates to buildings, but it’s endlessly fascinating to learn about all the variables that need to be considered from the farmer’s point of view.
What challenges does the hemp building industry face that it must overcome
“With lots of effort hemp can join with lots of other plantbased solutions in supporting farmers, manufacturers and communities to make a real difference.” Chris Magwood, Director of research & Programs Endeavour Centre and Builders for Climate Action
in the next five years? I think the biggest challenge will be in matching the slow-butsteady growth in hemp farming and uses for the hemp plant with the high expectations that many have for hemp. It’s all going to take time! On its own, hemp doesn’t save the world, but with lots of effort it can join with lots of other plant-based solutions in supporting farmers, manufacturers and communities to make a real difference.

HEMP BUILDING DIRECTORY 2022 LEADER PROFILE
Poland’s Institute Natural Fibers & Medicinal Plants: Genetic research with a long history Poland’s modern-day hemp story traces its roots to 1930 at an experimental agriculture station set up in modern-day Vilnius, Lithuania, in lands then under Polish reign. That’s where General Łucjan Żeligowski formed a research group and began experiments to develop hemp and flax strains that eventually would be widely used across Europe. It was on the heels of the World War II, in 1945, that Żeligowski’s initiative and many of its fiber experts relocated to the central western Polish city of Poznań to join with an institute under the direction of Dr. Janusz Jagmin, a professor in the university there. Known today as the Institute of Natural Fibers & Medicinal Plants (IWNiRZ), the state agency manages a program aimed at lifting the fortunes of Poland’s modern-era farmers while responding to the needs of the global natural fiber markets through research and commercialization of intellectual property developed at the Institute. Importantly, IWNiRZ, through its Polish Hemp
Institute of Natural Fibers & Medicinal Plants (IWNiRZ) Henola strain. | Photo Courtesy IWNiRZ Program (PHP), is the official custodian of EU-registered Polish hemp varieties which are growing in sales in many parts of the world. The international seed business managed by the Institute includes both grain varieties and those mainly grown for their stalks to produce hurd and technical fibers. Elite industrial hemp varieties in the IWNiRZ portfolio include Białobrzeskie, Tygra, Henola and Rajan. PHP aims to position Poland as a leader in genetics, actual seed production, and innovation in fiber applications. Trials have repeatedly shown Polish seeds offer superior performance. Białobrzeskie, the first Polish variety of fibrous
monoecious hemp, has historically been grown for textile fibers; its stem cores are also used for a variety of hurd applications such as hempcrete construction and animal bedding; and the variety’s flowers have also proven suitable for CBD and other extracts. As farmers turn more to grain and fiber production, Białobrzeskie also offers dual cropping potential because in addition to large amounts of fiber and hurd, the legacy variety produces a considerable amount of seed. Henola, which is grown for food seed, is also a proven top performer, having consistently produced more seeds than other
hemp seed varieties in common use. The Polish Hemp Program carries out extensive research and development of machines for harvesting, and processing technology intended to exploit the entire hemp plant. IWNiRZ also has high quality cannabinoid and textile laboratories offering a wide scope of services and tests, and sells grain, fiber and hurd. IWNiRZ and PHP participate in a wide range of national and international projects, work as a consultant to other countries, and cooperate with numerous scientific organizations around the world. The program then transfers that globally-sourced knowledge back to Polish agri-businesses as it supports local initiatives that are developing domestic value-chain infrastructure in Poland. The Institute’s long term strategic goal is to be present with its seed varieties and technology through partnerships in countries all over the globe while pushing Poland into the top ranks of hemp growing and processing in Europe.

HEMP BUILDING DIRECTORY 2022 LEADER PROFILE
Alex Sparrow: Responding to the rapid demand for Hempcrete What is your position at UK Hempcrete and what do you do? I’m the Founder / Managing Director at UK Hempcrete and I ultimately manage operations across our three main departments (Construction, Design and Material Sales) as well as providing specialist consultancy to a range of clients; architects, developers, building contractors, owner-builders and new hempcrete start-ups around the world. I’m also doing a lot of internal development work at the moment as we scale our services to respond to the rapidly spiralling demand for hempcrete in the UK construction industry. As well as all of that, I sit on the board of ASBP (the Alliance for Sustainable Building Products) in London, and Yorspace (a Community Land Trust / Community-led developer in York), so essentially, I’m kept pretty busy!
What most interests you about hemp and hemp building, and why? I think I’ve always been fascinated that a method of building which is so accessible and low-tech can produce such exceptional thermal performance and be better-than-zero-carbon and produce healthy non-toxic interior spaces and be a fully vapour-open building fabric, helping to create healthy homes and preserve the building fabric into the long term.
What was a win for your company in the past year?
Alex Sparrow, Founder/Managing Director at UK Hempcrete.
In the UK and Europe, hempcrete and hemp insulation products are widely accepted by building code authorities as viable high performance building products. Alex Sparrow, Founder/ Managing Director at UK Hempcrete Our biggest win this year has to be the updating of our material supply service. We started on this piece of work in January 2020, and then Covid hit, so the bulk of the work ended up being done by a small staff team on top of their day to day roles, mainly working from home and communicating through zoom instead of having all the benefits of being in the office together. My team did some really exceptional work, including taking over and completing the final stages of the website build, when our web design company let us
down badly. We somehow finally arrived at the point where our new purpose built material sales website went live in August this year at www.naturalbuildingstore. com. With its build-a-quote-online feature, I hope folks will find it much easier to engage with our sales team and get quotes quickly.
What is something about hemp building/construction/processing you didn’t know a year ago? I found out recently that most of the data that’s quoted on levels of carbon sequestration in hemp biomass comes from a very small pool of academic source data from one part of the world. I must say I was surprised to learn this and I very much hope that research is currently being replicated in different regions around the world. If anyone can connect me with any academic institution (anywhere!) that’s published on this important facet of the hemp story, please get in touch! 2022 | Hemp Building Direcctory 75

HEMP BUILDING DIRECTORY 2022 LEADER PROFILE
Kristaps Eglitas: Better quality shivs, cleaner fibers FROM HEMP TODAY ndustrial Hemp Latvia (IHL) is finding success with its HurdMaster 1000 Micro Decorticator, recording sales in North America and Europe over the past year as demand for hemp hurd and fiber picks up. A small-scale processing unit designed by IHL founder and entrepreneur Kristaps Eglitas, the MD1000 is designed to process stems from conventional fiber hemp stalks. It is intended for farms of about 6-10 acres, smallscale processors, hempcrete self-builders, hempcrete building teachers, research programs and innovative entrepreneurs.
I
RESEARCH TOOL The machine separates the hemp stalk’s woody inner core (hurd, shivs, shives) from the exterior bast fibers. The resulting hurd can be used for hempcrete, as animal bedding and animal litter, or as plant bedding. With additional technology, the separated bast fibers can be further processed for a wide, wide variety of applications, from insulation to textiles. Eglitis, by trade a designer of metal staircases and other structures, has already sold a number of machines in the USA, most recently shipping a unit to Cornell University, home to one of the most prestigious hemp research programs in the world. Cornell researchers will use the MD1000 in their study of fiber processing and applications. Eglitis designed the HurdMaster with help from a student
“The MD1000 is designed to process stems from conventional fiber hemp stalks. It is intended for farms of about 6-10 acres, small-scale processors, hempcrete self-builders, hempcrete building teachers, research programs and innovative entrepreneurs.” Kristaps Eglitas, Hurdmaster 1000 Micro Decorticator
Hurdmaster founder Kristaps Eglitas at Latvian Technical University after intense research on decortiation technology. He eventually bought an old decorticating machine and studied its components as a part of the design process. IHL is collaborating with Peruza, a leading maker of technology for fish processing, developing engineering enhancements that will reduce the HurdMaster’s weight while boosting efficiency. SEPARATOR IN WORKS The partners are also working on a separator that will sort the hurd from the fiber, which is
expected to be ready soon. The current (third) iteration of the HurdMaster MD1000 features several upgrades that result in better quality shivs, cleaner fibers and increased capacity: n An upgraded, rugged grinding process to make the machine capable of processing green stalks. n Boosted engine power, thereby increasing throughput volume. n Anti-“twining” technology that prevents fibers getting caught in the roller mechanism. The HurdMaster MD 1000 is the smallest possible machine that can process 50 kg of hemp stalks into: 10 kg hurd/hr; 10 kg fiber/hr; 10 kg waste/hr; and hurd 5-30mm. “We’re getting excellent hurds for hempcrete,” Eglitis said of the sleek, boxy unit, which is small enough to fit in a car. “We processed some fiber for hempcrete to insulate my own house.” 2022 | Hemp Building Direcctory 77
