Building upon the creative processes inherent in both architecture and art, the artist ventures into new mediums to magnify his illustrative reflections, all while drawing inspiration from the timeless techniques of architectural contemplation. Andenes’ Signature Ink, invisible ink and charcoal on paper 76 x 56 cm

Marc Brousse’s artistic contemplation centers around the intricate connection between nature and architectural structures. His initial source of inspiration stems from a deep fascination with the art of construction, the rich tapestry of civilizations’ histories, religious narratives, and mythical lore. Through his journeys, Brousse discovered that each urban setting embodies a vibrant and distinct “species,” shaped by the juxtaposition of ever-evolving buildings.

These urban landscapes act as living organisms, exhibiting internal vitality that continuously reshapes their external façade. The expression of this transformation varies greatly, contingent upon the specific context to which it belongs. Consequently, a captivating dialogue emerges between nature and architecture, urging us to reflect upon the enduring imprints our cities leave behind throughout time.

Kathryn Bagwell’s artistic repertoire encompasses oil paintings and collages that portray both men and women in a diverse figurative style, spanning from cubism to expressionism and realism. Based in Texas, Bagwell’s artistic journey is heavily influenced by her background as a musician, her fascination with ancient art, and her exploration of the complexities inherent in human nature.

Bagwell’s introduction to the world of art took place at an early age, as her family regularly visited the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock. While she initially pursued a degree in music, drawing has been a skill passed down through generations in her family. However, a pivotal moment occurred in 2006 when the loss of her sister led her to shift her focus from music to visual art.

Bagwell’s artistic practice is marked by improvisation as she fluidly navigates between various self-developed styles. Her artworks exhibit a vibrant use of color, employing charcoal lines, thick oil paint, as well as incorporating elements such as newspaper clippings, vintage music, and handmade paper. The subjects depicted in her works often establish powerful eye contact with the viewer, creating an engaging and introspective experience.

Her art seamlessly integrates cross-cultural influences and delves into psychological themes, encompassing subjects such as female empowerment, societal turmoil, self-deception, and introspection. Bagwell’s creations serve as a visual exploration of the human experience, capturing the nuanced dynamics of the human psyche.

“I continue to create people in my art because I cannot figure them out in real life. My works contain themes, emotions, and conundrums that I encounter in daily life- in family, friends, books or current events. Picasso once said, “to draw you have to close your eyes and sing”. For me, this is true. My formal education is in music, but the loss of a loved sister prompted a change in my instrument… to pencil and brush. The striving for harmony, an unfettered feeling of freedom, and the honoring of form and balance continues in my mind and on the canvas.”

GLENYS BUZZA

“Faced with a sheet of beautiful white paper and a stick of willow charcoal, there are no escape routes, no ways to disguise, no distractions such as colour, and no second chances. Just a purity.

The paper can be soft and yielding or hard and brittle, smooth or textured, and the charcoal can glide or drag over it or crumble into it. Fingers can explore the possibilities.”

Glenys, born in the serene town of Cobram situated on the banks of the Murray River in Northern Victoria, Australia, was blessed with a rich tapestry of natural experiences that ignited her imagination. The peaceful wetlands surrounding her birthplace provided a sanctuary for magnificent waterbirds, a recurring motif in her paintings.

Commencing her artistic journey in a rural setting, despite occasional artistic isolation, Glenys cultivated her own creative solutions, forged her artistic identity, and ultimately developed a unique style. Presently residing in Melbourne, Australia, she thrives on the interactions with fellow artists and the exposure to art in galleries, which stimulates the continual evolution of her art.

“Line serves as my primary means of communication, and I relish the art of suggestion, leaving room for the viewer to interpret and ponder—a touch of mystery that invites active engagement,” Glenys remarks.

The sheer joy, unpredictability, and exhilaration of combining handmade paper and charcoal form the foundation of her inspiration. She interprets subjects through her own subjective vision, infusing them with her emotions and memories. It is the artistic and creative process, as well as the subject matter itself, that fuels her artistic passion.

Glenys’ highly distinctive artworks have garnered acclaim for their contemplative, rhythmic, and adventurous qualities. Her creations have been showcased in exhibitions across the globe, including the USA, Germany, Japan, China, Austria, and Italy. She has also participated in virtual exhibitions held in Lyon, France, and Barcelona, Spain, further solidifying her artistic presence on the international stage.

SIMON DARLING

“My work is best described as portraits of complexities of various emotional, and psychological states highlighted in altered ways, imitating the madness and unknown of everyday life. I call this ‘Imitated Pragmatism,’ which is defined as a realistic representation of that which is not known on the surface. My practice provides a set of metaphoric tools for maneuvering with a pseudo-minimalist approach in the sphere of painting: these artworks resound and resonate with visions culled from the deep and dark realm of imagination.”

Simon Darling grew up immersed in the world of creativity, influenced by his mother, an emerging abstract artist. BARRY DAVIES RCA

“As a professional figurative bronze sculptor depicting historical figures in statuary, and beauty inherent in human and animal anatomy, I adopt a thoroughly researched approach to achieving anatomical precision supported by mathematical applications bridging science and art. If nature provides mathematics inherent within anatomy, then it’s for the sculptor to identify this and calculate it in his work.”

Davies grew up in Mid Wales, where his passion for art blossomed from an early age. He found inspiration in nature, capturing its essence through his drawings. After completing a precision engineering apprenticeship, Davies ventured into the realm of cabinet making, infusing his furniture with intricate carvings. His craftsmanship caught the attention of restoration projects in London, where his relief carvings gradually transformed into magnificent freestanding sculptures.

Drawing from natural history, anthropology, and paleontology, Davies portrayed various species, casting them in bronze. He shared his expertise by tutoring clay modeling classes centered around these subjects. Since 2010, Barry has showcased his sculptures across the UK and Europe, participating in international exhibitions held in Milan, London, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Bramante Halls in Rome, Flangini Palace in Venice, Verona, and Barcelona.

Presently, Davies focuses on crafting 3/4 lifesize statues of historical figures, including St. David, Llywelyn ap Iorwerth (Llywelyn the Great), a thoroughbred horse, and the Coronation of Henry V. In recognition of his expertise, he served as a member of the judging panel for the esteemed ‘Visual Art Open’ in Chester, UK.

Davies’ sculptures stand as the culmination of decades of dedicated study in human and animal anatomy, drawing inspiration from classical, Renaissance, and Baroque sculptures. This extensive exploration has allowed him to develop a distinctive style in figurative statuary, capturing the essence of the subjects he portrays and infusing natural history with the timeless beauty of bronze.

“My paintings begin as personal inspirations and narratives. They hide phantoms that are difficult to describe and arduous to recognize. Images vanish and sometimes reappear in shadow visions in my art. My work is all about discovering my inner emotions while looking at a face or a subject. I transform my feelings in marks and layers of colors and transparencies. I go beyond realism in my desire to capture resonant moments. I paint not a person but a time and state of mind. I experiment using different tools and materials with the ultimate satisfaction coming from continually inventing, stretching and improving myself. My biggest interest is in portraiture.”

Gabriella Di XX Miglia pursued her artistic education at the Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti in Genoa, Italy, specializing in painting. She further honed her skills by obtaining a Masters Degree in Restoration and Conservation from the University of Genoa, Italy.

With over a decade of experience, Gabriella has established herself as a respected conservator and restorer, working in both the public and private sectors in Italy and the US.

“In many ways, I aim to ‘rewrite’ history in my work and the dominant sense of self-awareness that informs most Western art practices. I am trying to present contemporary issues, such as difference as timeless, by situating my vocabulary of images and themes in an organic flux of dreams, history, news, commercial detritus, hyper-reality, and unvoiced feelings and forces of biological nature/desire. I aim to stay clear of any literal explanations of my work and believe that no work of art or “visual text” is ever complete. The ongoing input by viewers, as well as the debate between the viewer and the artist, keep on adding new meaning to an artwork.”

“I find relevance in thinking about humanity’s ongoing, strenuous relationship with the natural world. In most cases, one can trace contemporary problems to issues of the past. Either way, I like to study the past in order to create a better future. The subject matter in my drawings and painting changes a bit. However, I have developed a style of rendering reality that captures this idea of the geologic circus. An upheaval of the known and celebration of that which is unknown. I am inspired by concepts such as erosion, love and layering. I play with photoshopped imagery, building layers of meaning and source material from my life. It’s all a jumbled mess. But I love it.”

“My work (large watercolors on stretched paper) is abstract and is intended to evoke thoughts and feelings by combining and overlaying elements from multiple sources. Images emerge from intuitive and imaginative jumps between visual and verbal metaphors. Sometimes models are developed using material brought into the studio. More recently, imagery emerged from a mix of literary, photographic and art historical references. It is not necessary to fully understand all of those sources, but aspects or elements from each are intended to lead the viewer into a different engagement with the painting.”

Of these, I feel more intellectually aligned with Rauschenberg and Schwitters. Rauschenberg, because of his boundary-blurring use of materials and techniques, was considered “neo-Dadaist.” Schwitters, of course, was a member of the original highly intellectual, avant-garde Dada movement, which was radical in its opposition to the political and cultural status quo of its time. Ulla Hasen’s childhood was filled with immersive experiences in nature and the observance of her talented grandfather’s handicraft and painting. Despite this inspiring role model, Ulla herself never felt inclined to engage in painting or drawing, as she lacked the desire to depict specific subjects. Instead, she pursued studies in landscape ecology and dedicated her efforts to working on sustainable development. Ulla attended lectures on cultural theory, anthropology, perception theory, aesthetic theory, and art history at various universities in Vienna. It was only after gaining distance from the notion of depicting something specific that Ulla finally found the impetus to delve into painting.

“In a series of studies on water, I tried to follow the intrinsic energetic qualities of a medium in this very moment, where its utmost power merges with fragility. Water is the manifold threatened basis of life and can comprise so many opposed qualities—and therefore, ever since has been a mirror for reflection on life and transformation. These paintings are created within seconds out of an inner momentum of concentration on these specific qualities.”

“I create art in order to fulfill two opposing needs: to withdraw from the mundane tasks of daily life and commune with a higher realm, and to connect with the strange and beautiful nature of the world around me. In both these acts, I encounter myself. My work explores the ephemeral and the instantaneous: the immediate magic of now that disappears just as quickly as it arrives. None of these moments will ever return. I create to embrace the uncertainty of this moment, just before it changes into something else. Like waves or clouds, there’s a liquidity to living, an ongoing process of connection and change that I try to capture in its many different shapes and forms.” Soul and Spirit Polaroid 600 Film double exposure impression on metallic paper 100 x100 cm

Isabel Herrera captures a dreamlike truth in her images. Driven by the enchantment of instant photography, she is celebrated for her ethereal Polaroid photographs and surreal compositions created through Polaroid emulsion lifts on diverse fabrics and metals. Her work emanates a simultaneous sense of stillness and impending action—a depiction of unspoken words, impending gestures, and the anticipation of transformative moments that echo the balanced harmony found in nature’s cycles. Isabel holds a BA in Psychology from the College of William and Mary. As a mother raising a daughter with autism, Isabel intimately understands life’s uncertainties, which often find expression in her art. She explains, “My daughter is my teacher and my guide. Embracing the uncertainty of our shared future is a natural part of our journey. Change is inevitable, but it creates space for personal growth.” Herrera’s artistry captures the elusive beauty of truth and invites contemplation of life’s interconnected mysteries. I call it Crop Series and the only criterion is that each painting has a frame(s) in a frame. The internal windows contain the most realistic treatment with more detail. All other areas are abstracted in some way. I’m pulling from my graphic design, drawing, plein air, and realism experience for this project.”

As a full-time artist, Terry is constantly exploring new ideas and methods in painting. He falls outside the confines of any particular artistic movement or period, but was significantly influenced by historic artists such as Syd Mead, Frank Frazetta, Richard Diebenkorn. His approach is twofold: “Even though I continually strive for more expressiveness in my work, I also prefer, proportions and perspective to be relatively accurate; then the application of paint can be more playful.”

“As a classically trained painter with graphic design experience, I’m working towards merging those two worlds in a fresh way. It has been exciting to discover the surprising compositions that I feel result in joyful, fun expressions of our world. Through my paintings, my desire is to brighten people’s lives and lift their spirits.”

Suzanne Howe recently embraced a new artistic direction guided by her fantastical imagination. This transformation brought anthropomorphized objects to the forefront of her vibrant artworks. Inspiration struck Howe during halfawake moments and daydreams, where fully formed images flooded her mind. Encouragement from a painting workshop instructor to infuse her authentic personality into her art played a crucial role in this creative shift. What sets Howe’s work apart is her skillful technique, utilizing subtle pointillist brushstrokes to create textured surfaces that engage the senses. Her warm sense of humor adds an extra dimension to her artwork, resonating with viewers. Howe conveys, “I am expressing the human condition through anthropomorphic evocative events, using objects as figurative stand-ins to which everyone can relate. No gender or color or cultural barriers.”

Dal Hrk discovered his passion for art at the age of 12 when he received his first oil color kit and canvas. Without much knowledge of technique, he delved into alla prima painting. In 1976, he aspired to study art at the Slovak Art Academy but was rejected due to perceived lack of talent. Undeterred, he pursued studies in architecture at the Technical University.

In 1977, Hrk encountered the artistmaster Jozef Bubak, whose wisdom and experience in nature, light and shadows, objects, animals, materials, portraiture, and the human body became a wellspring of inspiration. After immersing himself in Bubak’s teachings for five years, Hrk began to forge his own path of artistic expression.

From 1979 to 1998, Hrk participated in several collective exhibitions in Slovakia, showcasing his art. Upon relocating to Canada, he continued to create paintings sporadically, until now, where he devotes himself to painting on a regular basis.

“My goal is to challenge contempt for the nude male figure—thought to be embarrassing at best and at worst, indecent. My exploration involves placing homoerotic male nudes in spaces that engage the viewer either as voyeur or partner. The work is intended to challenge the viewer to examine their values and prejudices vis-a-vis intimacy and the nude male, their own beliefs and values about the naked body, to resolve the question of good and evil regarding nudity in general, and male nudity in particular, and to provide a peacefully sensual space that challenges heteronormative assumptions and demonstrates that same-sex relationships are wholesome, healthy and lifeaffirming.”

Gerard Huber is a highly accomplished artist known for his unique approach to airbrushed acrylic paintings. His artistic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Painting and Printmaking from the University of Northern Iowa in 1971. Implicitly, it is a question of alienation and of getting out of this captivity to allow the entry of the Real, which can be this Absent. The inspiration can come from fashion but not exclusively. It restores scenes from dreams, maintaining a beautiful and exquisite sense of time and space, and creating a place of release for your soul. It’s not just about the past, present, and future. AOMI KIKUCHI

b.1960, Japan

Lives in Kyoto, Japan

“I make sculptures, wall pieces, and garments using textiles and found objects to explore Japanese aesthetics and the philosophy of Buddha. They are “WabiSabi,” the beauty found in imperfections, and “Monono-aware,” the feeling of sympathy for changing or perishing phenomena or substances. Closely related to the philosophy of Buddha, these can be summarized in three key words: impermanence, insubstantiality, and suffering. My work addresses infinity as the succession of fleeting and brittle activities. With freedom and flexibility, I combine acquired knowledge and experiment and create art to inspire dialogue and reflection on these concepts.”

With over 40 years of dedicated practice, Aomi has honed her expertise in various textile materials and techniques, including dressmaking, traditional Yuzen kimono dyeing, Japanese embroidery, and weaving. Fragility and transience serve as sources of inspiration for Aomi, drawing from the delicate nature of extremely thin fibers, goose down, and wool fiber. “I feel I am useless as an artist when I am happy. Pain is what creates my artwork. The painful experiences that people go through as they journey through life in the world around us from childhood to adulthood which in many ways is full of chaos and hardship, are what sparks and motivates me to possess my objectives to make purposeful artwork that hopefully generates meaningful and fulfilling empathetic connections to people. As I observe and interpret the world around me combined with creating my artwork, I discover time and time again that true beauty lies within the darkness and that sometimes nightmares are the birthplace of some of the best ideas for an artist.”

“Sources of inspiration are nature, landscapes, urban architecture and foreign countries and their people. By engaging with these topics, I create compositions on canvas, wood and metals. Using acrylic paints, pigments and varnishes, which she combines with materials she finds in nature, such as bark, straw or wood, and home-dyed materials to make collages, I create haptic structures on the support media. This enables viewers to use their sense of touch to engage with the exhibited canvas, which is my intention. So I put my emotions and feelings with the founded and collected material into my compositions and express my love for nature and all kinds of livings.”

Kathleen Kilchenmann, born in Zurich, Switzerland, and residing in Germany since 1973, is an accomplished artist whose passion for painting and drawing emerged during her school years. Images have always captivated Andréa, leaving a profound impression on her. Whether it’s artwork, people’s faces, or the interplay of light and shadow, visual stimuli deeply resonate with her. “Art is my calling and my longing. I love connecting with creative forces, mixing them with all the ups and downs of life and expressing it through modern abstract paintings and drawings. I work diligently to consistently produce, which is a challenge because each piece is powerful and comes from the depths of my being. Each work of art I create is special, with a story behind it and, something to say.”

David Marulli began identifying as an artist in 1991 when he was a sophomore in high school, thanks to his art teacher who recognized his talent and provided encouragement. This pivotal moment gave him the permission to fully embrace his identity as an artist. He delved into oil paintings, drawings, and poetry, but life circumstances hindered his creative pursuits, resulting in a decade-long artistic hiatus.

In 2003, everything changed when he relocated to Vermont with the purpose of reconnecting with his artistic self. Over the next five years, he dedicated himself to drawing, writing, and making music. In 2008, he moved to Florida, where life once again became complex between 2009 and 2018.

However, during this challenging period, he managed to create several acrylic and multimedia paintings that emerged from the process of healing trauma. The turning point came in 2018 with his relocation to Colorado, signaling a new phase in his artistic journey. It was then that he fully embraced and accepted himself as an artist, recognizing that art serves as a grounding force and brings him inner peace. Since then, he has produced hundreds of pieces, gained a substantial following on Instagram, featured in magazines, showcased his work in Times Square, and created a website to share his art with the world.

For David, committing to his passion and taking his art to the next level is a gift he gives to himself—a testament to his dedication and desire to fulfill his artistic potential.

JEAN JACQUES PORRET

“Achieving a sense of “rightness”, even in the most uncertain circumstances, is the motivating concept behind my sculpture. The work is figurative but is not about the figure. I consider myself an expressionist, as I am more interested in communicating an abstract feeling or idea than an actual image. I use recognizable forms to evoke emotions and stimulate sensations.”

Jean-Jacques Porret, an award-winning artist, sculptor, and engineer, hails from Switzerland and grew up in a family of art and antique collectors. Surrounded by exquisite antiquities and artwork, his passion for art blossomed early, and as a teenager, he began carving wood. Specializing in creating three-dimensional works using the lost wax technique of casting bronze, Porret was drawn to bronze for its demanding nature and tactile qualities.

After obtaining an engineering degree, Porret ventured to New York, driven to learn English and establish a life on his own terms. This marked the beginning of his career, which eventually led him to Chicago. Driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge, Porret explored museums worldwide, absorbing inspiration and engaging with prominent artists of the time.

As an artist, Porret’s style and work have evolved over the years. Transitioning from a sharper to a softer expression of molten metal, his approach remains figurative yet transcends mere reproduction of the human form. Instead, he seeks to convey abstract feelings and ideas, using recognizable forms to evoke emotions and sensations. He identifies himself as an impressionist, with each sculpture imbued with depth and intensity, reflecting his artistic vision.

KLARA SEDLO

“In my work, I focus mainly on dreams, the subconscious mind and psychology. How do we perceive events or emotions? What would we look like when overwhelmed by feelings if these feelings were visible? What would certain relationships look like if represented by symbols or colors? These are questions that haunt me the most. I use the dream language often—my artworks are as symbolic, bizarre, and surreal as dreams. I depict different states of minds, characters or relationships as if they were seen through weird dream lenses.”

Klára Sedlo, an outstanding artist representing the young art generation in the Czech Republic, has emerged as a distinctive talent during her studies at the prestigious Prague Academy of Fine Arts. With a strong foundation in painting techniques, she has firmly established herself within the vibrant Czech artistic landscape.

Sedlo’s artistic journey transcends national borders, as her exhibitions have been held both domestically and internationally in countries such as the United States, Great Britain, Italy, and Germany. Her captivating works have garnered recognition and found their way into esteemed collections across continents, including the United States, Europe, Japan, and Australia.

At the core of Sedlo’s artistic expression lies figurative painting. She delves deep into the exploration and portrayal of psychological conditions, dedicating her graduation project to obsessive-compulsive disorder. Alongside this introspective approach, Sedlo skillfully incorporates elements of pop culture, kitsch, classic horror, and humor, offering viewers a multi-dimensional experience.

While her primary focus remains on traditional two-dimensional paintings, Sedlo’s artistic endeavors often extend into site-specific installations, performances, and video art. Through these dynamic mediums, she contextualizes her visions, revealing the intricacies and complexities of the human inner world.

Klára Sedlo’s artistic voice is truly unique, transcending various artistic forms, and has gained attention and acclaim within the Czech Republic and beyond. b.1958, Alkmaar, The Netherlands Lives in Alkmaar, The Netherlands

“The worth of an artwork is primarily determined by its quality and strength to affect the inner world of the beholder rather than the qualities and the characteristics of the work itself. I see my paintings as archetypical images, as universal ‘icons’ that are, for the most part, unhooked from the limitations of the spirit of the age and culture. They invite the onlooker to experience the psychic power with which the image is charged. This interactive effect of the spirituality of the imagination is the deepest motivation for my being an artist.”

Herman Smorenburg, a renowned Dutch realist artist, is highly regarded for his exceptional skill and distinctive style. Following his art studies in Amsterdam, he immersed himself in the classical technique of glazing over a monochrome underground painting, which has become a defining characteristic of his work. His mastery of this technique allows him to create stunning color effects and delicate interplays of light and shadow.

Smorenburg’s art is infused with a sense of the mythical and the visionary, often showcasing landscapes that evoke a bygone era. Architectural elements feature prominently, adding to the atmosphere of his compositions. Within his dreamlike realms, one can find predominantly female figures, inviting viewers to step into these ethereal landscapes and experience the profound stillness and tranquility that define Smorenburg’s artistic vision.

BRIANNE URZADA

b.1989, Yorkton, Canada Lives in Regina, Canada

“My work explores the aftermath of trauma and how it affects identity. It’s when things go back to ‘normal’ that intrigues me. Life went back to ‘normal’ for me after completing successful cancer treatments, and I found support in recovery was little or absent. I took it upon myself to understand how people move through the coping process, which is both complicated and necessary. My work begins with research, where I conduct interviews, photo sessions and draw inspiration from others experiencing a healing journey. I look specifically at fear and what opens up when we become comfortable with it. Truly processing the pain of an experience gives way to hope, freedom and comfort.”

Brianne Urzada holds a Bachelor of Arts Education and a Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts) from the University of Regina. At the age of 23, she faced a diagnosis of stage three Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and underwent a challenging treatment program that ultimately proved successful. This experience deeply influenced her artistic exploration, focusing on the impact of trauma on identity, particularly as a woman and mother. Through the use of abstracted figures, she captures the healing journey and conveys messages of hope.

In 2015, Brianne established Arthouse, a local arts business, where she primarily works as an artist and also offers corporate arts-based team building and private painting lessons. Her personal encounter with cancer fostered a profound appreciation for the therapeutic and meditative qualities of art. Supported by private funding, she now provides free therapeutic art classes to cancer patients and survivors, often featuring them as subjects in her paintings.

Brianne recently showcased her latest body of work, titled “Someone You Know,” in a solo exhibition. Her talent as an emerging artist earned her recognition on CBC. She also completed the Michele Sereda Artist in Residency program at the University of Regina, further enriching her artistic practice and perspectives.

“I believe that art needs to reflect and challenge the changes within all societies, and attempt an insightful approach of challenge to avoid sinking into complacency and banality.

My specific interest lies in the interactive play of an individuals psyche within a personal or group dialogue; The ‘truer’ personal nature of such an individual is often hidden behind a bland mask of social etiquette; With this concept in mind, my work is not labeled or titled; so allowing the observer a greater and freer interpretation of my work without any preconceived ideas.”
