ASPIRE Interns

We enjoyed and appreciated the services of our ASPIRE interns over the summer of 2022. All of these students attend UNC-Greensboro and are pursuing degrees in Parks & Recreation Management with a concentration in Therapeutic Recreation Studies.

Each student is fulfilling their course requirements under ASPIRE’s Student Success Program, where they will develop their skills and abilities to better serve individuals with disabilities through recreation and leisure programming.

Camp Ann

Camp Ann participants had a wonderful time this summer, their first series of in-person camp sessions since 2019! Participants enjoyed art projects, community field trips, adaptive sports and more.

Camp Ann and many other programs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are provided by High Point Parks & Recreation's ASPIRE section. For more information, please contact Stephanie Hedgecock at 336.883.3477 or stephanie.hedgecock@highpointnc.gov.

Happy Birthday, JJ!

JJ has been a participant in High Point Parks & Recreation’s Camp Ann program for over 20 years and celebrates his birthday with us at camp during July. He absolutely LOVES buses, so the staff at Allen Jay Recreation Center (1073 E. Springfield Road, High Point) borrowed a bus and treated him to a bus ride on his special day. One of our wonderful volunteers also made him a bus-themed cake and provided festive cupcakes for all the participants to enjoy.

National Parks and Recreation Month

Special thanks to High Point Mayor Jay Wagner and members of the High Point City Council for their declaration of July 2022 as National Parks and Recreation Month in our city! We profiled volunteers and staff and shared how and why they “rise up” for parks and recreation - why it matters in our community! Marshall Newsome, Chairman of the High Point Parks & Recreation Commission said in part, “I rise up for Parks and Recreation as the volunteer chair of the High Point Parks & Recreation Commission because I am a community advocate, and the services provided by Parks & Recreation are so important to the health and resilience of our community.”

Welcome Kaylee Mayhew!

Please join us in welcoming Kaylee Mayhew, recreation attendant, to the High Point Parks & Recreation team! Kaylee, who will work primarily as part of our ASPIRE staff, grew up in Charlotte and recently graduated from UNC-Greensboro with a degree in parks and recreation management with a concentration in recreation therapy. She loves animals, yoga, food, coffee, interacting with people and learning new skills and hobbies.

When asked what drew her to choosing a career in parks and recreation, Kaylee said, “I have a younger sister who is in high school and has cerebral palsy. When she was born, I immediately became invested in helping my mom provide the best quality of life for her. Eventually, it became my passion to do the same for others through recreation.”

ASPIRE provides the Adaptive Sports, Programs & Inclusive Recreation programs offered by High Point Parks & Recreation for people with disabilities and their families. For more information on ASPIRE, including volunteer opportunities, please visit www.highpointnc.gov/pr or call 336.883.3477.

Celebrating High Point City Lake Park: Past, Present and Future

Everyone in the Triad, and especially in High Point and Jamestown, knows High Point City Lake Park. Nearly everyone has a story about spending time here, whether it’s about riding the train, celebrating a birthday or family reunion, swimming in the iconic pool or attending a community event.

Maybe you’ve fished in the beautiful waters of the Arnold J. Koonce, Jr. Lake, or ridden on the pontoon boat for a Fall Leaf Tour. Remember smelling the unmistakable aroma of hot dogs and hamburgers cooking on a nearby grill as you rode the train and screamed – as loudly as possible – as you traveled through that spooky, dark tunnel?

City Lake, now known as the Arnold J. Koonce, Jr. City Lake, or High Point City Lake was created in 1927 when the City of High Point built a dam across the Deep River. In addition to serving as a water source for the city, the lake quickly became popular with boaters and fishermen and still is.

The park currently encompasses 243 acres of park land, with 10 picnic shelters of varying sizes. High Point City Lake Park has served as a community gathering place and a cultural hub for community events, large and small, since it opened in the 1930s.

The park’s first expansion in 1935 featured a large pool, thought by many to be the largest pool between Atlanta and New York, an open air pavilion and amphitheater. With funding from the Works Progress Administration (WPA), the project was extremely labor-intensive and employed over 700 local men, providing much-needed income to families during the Great Depression.

Swimming exhibitions took place every week, and hundreds of people swam every day during the warm weather months of the 1940s. Swimming lessons were popular, and swimming teams formed that became a huge part of life for High Point’s youth for decades. On hot summer days, you can still find hundreds of people enjoying the cool blue waters of the High Point City Lake pool.

The park’s gymnasium was added in 1960. It was notable for hosting many athletic competitions, including amateur boxing matches. Some amateur boxers who competed here would go on to box or coach on the professional level and in the Olympics, including Leon Spinks and Michael Spinks, Sarge Johnson and Ken Norton.

8

Focus On

Aside from the pool, High Point City Lake Park’s most iconic attraction is, without a doubt, the train. From the time the original red train, donated by the Rotary Club of High Point, arrived at High Point City Lake Park in 1953, generations of High Point’s children have begged to go to the park as often as possible to ride it. High Point University generously donated a new train, which is now purple, in 2017. The train and a nearby carousel operate on a seasonal schedule, approximately Memorial Day through early October.

High Point City Lake Park’s marina rents several types of boats, including Jon boats, paddle boats, kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddle boards. You can also purchase fishing licenses, bait, tackle and other items you might need to enjoy a day on the serene waters of the 277-acre Arnold J. Koonce, Jr. Lake.

In 2019, residents of High Point voted for a bond referendum to help renovate High Point City Lake Park. Design of the new facility began in 2020, with construction following in 2021. When current renovations are complete and the pool reopens in May 2023, visitors can enjoy new features, including a splash pad, 50-meter pool, zero depth entry with a lazy river and play features, two new water slides and renovated locker rooms. Extensive renovations were completed on the old gymnasium. When the doors reopen in November 2022, there will be a state-of-the-art, 6,600-square-foot meeting and event center perfect for your next indoor celebration or meeting.

High Point City Lake Park has played an important role in the history and culture of our community for generations, and families continue to pass along their love for this park. The changes and improvements to High Point City Lake Park over the years have respectfully preserved the incomparable history of this very special place, with a clear eye continually focused on the possibilities of its future.

For more information on High Point City Lake Park, please visit our website at www.highpointnc.gov/citylakepark or call us at 336.883.3498.

First, participants will color in their papers with the wax crayons, making a hydrophobic layer that repels water. Then, they will use their pipets to drip water onto their paper. This will demonstrate the natural oils that animals produce to stay dry. Participants can take their “water-proof” bears home to enjoy and help reinforce the experience.

Using the classroom as a base laboratory for investigations, campers set out to find clue stations set up in the forest, grounds and garden areas of PEC. Clue stations include Talking Trees, Wild About Weather, Bird Beak Mix-up, Underground Escapes, Made-up Maps, Tipi Tales and more.

Activities and events take place outdoors and on the trails, so campers need to be dressed for outdoor play. Each day, campers need to bring a lunch, two snacks and a water bottle.

e-Walks (Ages 18+)

We will walk from fall into winter and witness the natural world change before us. Topics include photoperiod, dormancy, limiting factors, hibernation, subnivean survival and much more. Participants should dress for the weather and bring their own binoculars and magnifying lens; PEC can provide these tools for those who don't have them. Bicentennial Greenway

The 6.2-mile High Point section of the Bicentennial Greenway begins at the Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road) and runs to Gallimore Dairy Road.
