The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR) was created to preserve the last remnants of pristine desert in the emirate. A stark contrast to the futuristic emirate it is nestled within, these lands were once the home of the Bedouins, who flourished despite the unforgiving terrain. The reserve now takes up about five per cent of the entire emirate and is home to indigenous wildlife, including sand gazelles and the once-endangered Arabian oryx. Access to the reserve is available only through a handful of tour operators but every visit is a rare chance to get up close to these fascinating creatures. Homegrown company Sand Sherpa is the first and only operator in Dubai that organises overnight self-drive camping safaris in the DDCR, complete with all the comforts of glamping but with an authentic, rustic touch. sandsherpa.com

Complex calligraphy patterns, exquisite Arabesque designs and significant symbols of faith paint a beautiful picture of the diverse world of Islamic art
Created by Majid Al Yousef
Majid Al Yousef thoughtfully contemplates his next stroke before the pen glides down the piece of paper one final time to complete his masterpiece. He takes one last look and as he studies his own art, he says: “Calligraphy has always been a form of meditation to me. “Back in the day, it was one of the only mediums for communication and preserving sacred texts, and so it was nurtured and developed through the centuries. Today, the art form holds immense value; it possesses this mystical quality that makes it so appealing.” Unlike in Western civilisation, where painting and sculpture are often considered the two most important art forms, Islamic art has always followed a different form of hierarchy. The most revered of them all is the art of the written word, as this can be attributed to its use in the pages of the Qur’an as well as other important religious texts. In the Middle Ages, calligraphers were hailed as the most important artists and rewarded handsomely for their craft, which included everything from penning fine manuscripts
12
to creating artistic inscriptions on the walls of mosques and other significant public landmarks. As local calligraphy artist Ibraheem Khamayseh tells us: “In the days of the Ottoman Empire, Arabic calligraphy enjoyed a golden era and the art form could be found everywhere, from mosques to libraries and cultural clubs. “Also, as one of the main forms of self-expression, the style played a significant role in Arabic poetry. In fact, poems that were presented using calligraphy had more weight, were more appealing and easier for the common people to connect with than those simply written.” Khamayseh believes that the art is currently enjoying a revival in the Middle East with the region reinforcing calligraphy as part of the local culture. Today, this treasured form can be found masterfully inscribed on coins, paintings, sacred sites, architectural monuments and artistic works that have been preserved for centuries. “Sometimes, all you have to do is walk down the street to find a piece of art inspired by calligraphy.”

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
CALLIGR APHY MEE TS MODERN ARCHITEC TURE Impressive examples of Arabic calligraphy can be found across the UAE, etched onto significant buildings or as stunning art installations. Standing proud along Sheikh Zayed Road and set to open in the last quarter of 2021, the Museum of the Future is a sleek, stylish structure encased in stainless steel. Adorned on its façade are phrases written in Arabic calligraphy that form a poem composed by Dubai’s ruler His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum about his vision for the city’s future. Meanwhile, in the UAE capital, the stunning Qasr Al Watan, which is the Presidential Palace in Abu Dhabi, reveals several nods to local design heritage. Walking through the Palace Gardens to the main entryway, two stunning Arabic calligraphy sculptures come into full view. Rendered in silver, the sunlight reflecting off its shiny surfaces and the rays that filter through the installations together create a mesmerising effect, bathing these structures in a mystical glow. Titled ‘Power of Words’, these two masterpieces are smaller replicas of the original gold sculpture, bearing the same name, housed within the Great Hall of the Presidential Palace. The interlaced inscription is inspired by the words of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE.
CULTUR AL CRE ATIVIT Y
Venturing beyond the realm of calligraphy, Islamic art also encompasses other expressions of creativity. Al Yousef says: “Floral patterns, geometric designs and miniature works take pride of place in Islamic art with Arabic architecture being one of the most significant pillars.” In fact, in this part of the world, there is no shortage of enchanting examples of Arabic architecture. From classic representations found in Dubai’s historic neighbourhood, such as the prominent wind towers in Al Fahidi, to more contemporary examples found on modern buildings, almost every structure pays tribute to Arabic design in some form. Khamayseh adds: “Figurative paintings depicting religious themes, poetry books, the covers of Qur’ans, glass lamps as well as mosque fittings, such as tiles and woodwork, all have a special place in local culture.”

ME ANINGFUL MOTIFS
Among other significant Islamic symbols, the star is a common motif in the region. It is one of the many shapes that recur in various works by Muslim artists, featuring prominently in art and architecture. The eight-point star, known as the khatim, encapsulates many of the underlying principles that form the Islamic understanding of the universe. The symmetrical design represents the order and harmony of creation. Examples of the star can be found on the walls, f loors and ceilings of buildings, etched into traditional ornaments, intertwined through carpet designs and celebrated in paintings. As such, the symbol reappears often, woven into the very fabric of the country, visible everywhere once you start to look for it. Various other motifs, such as the pentagon, octagon and circle, crop up time and time again in Islamic designs, piled into complex patterns that pay tribute to the infinite nature of Allah. But the representation of Allah in figurative form, including depictions of Prophet Mohammed, his family and the portrayal of all living beings, are frowned upon as per Islamic teachings. Because of this, animals and people feature a lot less prominently in comparison to Western art. Instead, through the centuries, Islamic artists have focused on celebrating the gracious nature of Allah and his glorious creations through Arabesque shapes and geometric patterns. Many such works, found across the region today, combine the two styles to create beautiful and complex designs that are very distinctive to Islamic art. Khatim
Calligraphy by Ibraheem Khamayseh
Hence, they are instantly recognisable. Patterns like these are acceptable because they honour, rather than imitate, the Almighty. This does not, however, extend to the portrayal of plant life. In fact, floral forms are widely represented in Islamic art. Arabesque, a style associated with the art of the Islamic world, is characterised by flowing depictions of leaves and flowers. And one of the most beautiful modern-day examples is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, where the outstanding décor is characterised by flamboyant flowers covering the central courtyard and columns surrounding it. The theme is continued inside the building, on the walls of the prayer halls and the beautiful stained-glass doors and windows. The mosque is also home to the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet featuring an intricate Islamic medallion design. Offering insight into some of the finest creations by regional artists through the centuries, several galleries across the UAE present an array of ancient and modern works. Some collections include engraved pots, handcrafted chess sets, astrolabes, woodcarvings, ceramics, tea sets, glass lamps, carpets and rugs. Supporting the region’s artistic endeavours are events such as Art Dubai and Abu Dhabi Art, held annually in the emirates. These fairs not only welcome emerging and established artists from all over the world but also shine a light on the local and regional arts scene, furthering its prime position as a significant element in the country’s cultural fabric.

CHEF PROFILE | IN THE UAE
Chef Luca Tadeo at The Cheat
If the critics are to be believed, the best pastries in town can be found at The Cheat, Paramount Hotel Dubai’s one-of-a-kind chocolate lab, where indulgence is encouraged. And it is all thanks to the man at the helm – Chef Luca Tadeo – who has enjoyed tremendous success working for some of the world’s biggest hospitality brands. Hailing from Milan, Tadeo trained at one of the leading culinary schools in Europe, ALMA in Italy’s northern city of Colorno. Before joining Paramount Hotel Dubai, he served at the famous L’Eclair de Génie in Paris, the go-to venue for eclairs in the French capital, and also at several luxury hotels. But it was at The Cheat, where he found his niche, building upon his illustrious career. “When I was asked to join Paramount Hotel Dubai, I relished the opportunity to work with what was then a brand-new and exciting project, to be able to create something very different and cool for the property with the kind of experience that I have,” said Tadeo. He believes no menu is complete without an indulgent dessert, a philosophy that he practices with his outstanding selection of pastries and sweet delights at the hotel. Having made it his goal to amaze Dubai’s discerning gourmands, Tadeo has successfully delivered. “I love Dubai. It is a competitive city with the highest concentration of luxury hotels and famous restaurant brands in the world, where experienced and famous chefs try to meet and exceed the expectations of a highly refined clientele.”
The Cheat, Paramount Hotel Dubai
His work earned him a nomination for Pastry Chef of the Year at the 2021 Middle East Chef Excellence Awards Launching The Cheat was one of his recent accomplishments. A paradise for chocolate lovers, this sweet lab invites guests to indulge in signature truffles, macaroons and pastries made by Tadeo and his team of master chocolatiers. There is also a selection of bespoke creations and customers can request for any item imaginable – from Tiffany boxes to cigars and hats – to be rendered in chocolate. His work at the hotel earned him a nomination for Pastry Chef of the Year at the 2021 Middle East Chef Excellence Awards. It’s his passion that drives him – a fact that’s evident in his impressive creations – and he shares the credit with his family who inspired him down this path. Growing up in Milan, he honed the basics of creating tasty treats at home. This is why one of his favourite desserts is the panettone, a type of bread that originated in his hometown and is usually enjoyed during the Christmas holidays. “I love it because it’s delicious and quite difficult to make. The long process involved in curing the dough is what makes the recipe tough to perfect.” Not one to rest on his laurels, Chef Luca’s success with The Cheat has deepened his desire to do more and achieve greater things. “I get up every morning excited about what we can create. While I start the workday by getting the team together in the morning, the highlight for me is tasting everything that the pastry kitchen has produced.” While it’s his passion that has immensely contributed to his success, Tadeo believes that there is also another secret ingredient at work. “Patience!” It’s virtue that he practices daily while taking his craft to new and greater heights.

Once a sleepy stretch of desert, Dubailand has transformed into a highly sought-after neighbourhood, thanks to the sprawling DAMAC Hills development, which began welcoming residents almost five years ago. Spread across 42 million square feet – with four million alone dedicated to lush, green spaces – this self-contained golf community offers a range of luxurious villas and apartments, ideal for families. The development is also home to Trump International Golf Club, Dubai, and the UAE’s first residential wave pool, Malibu Bay, along with a host of other leisure amenities, from tennis courts and skateparks to horse stables and food trucks. “DAMAC Hills is not just another property in our portfolio. It is an all-encompassing community with a whole host of amenities for its residents,” said Amer Kharbush, Vice President – Projects, DAMAC Group. “A mixed-use development, it comprises residential villas, apartments, hotels, parks, a community centre, supermarket, school, dog park and more.” The residential options are vast and versatile, from studio apartments to six-bedroom villas in an array of configurations. And all properties come with access to world-class amenities within the community. Located along Al Qudra Road, DAMAC Hills offers easy access to the city’s major road networks and is within proximity to all key business and leisure districts. Meanwhile, popular Dubai attractions, such as Global Village, IMG Worlds of Adventure, Mall of the Emirates and more are just a short drive away. It all comes together as the ideal neighbourhood for families seeking a well-rounded lifestyle. Development is still ongoing within the community and according to Kharbush, more family villas and buildings are in the pipeline, with several set to be handed over soon.

DAMAC Hills is a self-contained community with a host of amenities for its residents
Community plant nursery
“We are witnessing a lot of people moving into the community and they come seeking outdoor spaces and leisure amenities at their doorstep. As a self-contained development, DAMAC Hills offers plenty to residents without them having to leave the neighbourhood and this has proved especially beneficial at a time when social distancing and staying at home has become the norm.” The property developer is, therefore, focusing on launching more family homes to cater to this growing trend. And with the demand for more luxury accommodation taken care of, DAMAC also constantly strives to enhance its amenities for residents. “At present, our amenities range from a large park that contains everything from yoga zones and kids’ playgrounds to tennis and basketball courts, cricket pitches and football fields. There’s plenty more to keep active, with a BMX biking trail, skatepark, ice rink and jogging track. “Bringing nature closer to residents, we have developed wadis within the community that are reminiscent of the wild valleys found in the northern emirates with water flowing through. Lakes are peppered throughout the community, while there are also horse stables, a petting zoo and a spot for fishing. There’s also a plant nursery, where residents can pick their own tomatoes and lettuce for their kitchens and buy plants to grow in their own gardens.” In the heart of the community is Trump International Golf Club, Dubai, offering state-of-the-art training and leisure facilities with a 7,300-yard, par 71 links-style course. It features a 30,000-square-foot clubhouse, the largest of its kind in Dubai, and is home to dining venues, a fitness centre and a swimming pool. But when it comes to the community’s star attraction, Malibu Bay certainly steals the spotlight. As the UAE’s first residential wave pool in the heart of the desert, it makes “going to the beach without actually going to the beach” possible. “Most of the clusters within DAMAC Hills have their own swimming pool but the one element we thought the community was missing was a pool with beach vibes. It wasn’t explored anywhere else in the UAE, so we set out to create something different, unique and specific to the DAMAC brand. And that was the inspiration behind Malibu Bay,” said Kharbush. The attraction was designed to instantly transport residents to the Californian coast, with everything from the signages to the quality of the sand perfectly curated for residents to feel like they are actually at the beach. “With Malibu Bay, we wanted to bring the beach to the people at DAMAC Hills. And now, they can just walk to the beach within the community instead of driving down to the Dubai coast.”

THE Neighbourhood DAMAC Hills 2 offers a wide range of properties in the heart of nature The largest development in the DAMAC Properties portfolio, DAMAC Hills 2 is quickly becoming one of Dubai’s most popular family-oriented neighbourhoods. Created for those who want to enjoy nature not too far from the city, DAMAC Hills 2 is a self-sustained community, where a tranquil pace of life takes centre stage. The 55-million-square-foot development is dotted with swimming pools, playgrounds and leisure zones in each cluster, all surrounded by beautifully landscaped streets and parks. “DAMAC Hills 2 is the ideal fit for residents who enjoy quiet time and a tranquil environment away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It boasts serene vibes even though it’s well connected to the city, which means that residents can enjoy all the comforts of suburban living without having to leave their neighbourhood,” said Amer Kharbush, Vice President – Projects, DAMAC Group. DAMAC Hills 2 was designed to be a self-contained community, complete with parks, supermarkets, activity zones, a community centre, dog park and more. And while more than 7,000 residents already call the community home, development is still in progress to offer much more so that people won’t need to venture outside the community and everything they need can be accessed within its perimeter. Responding to customer requests for enhanced community living, DAMAC is developing several new themed areas for residents to enjoy. The new additions will include Sports Town, which will be complete with all sorts of sports facilities, including basketball, tennis, volleyball and paddle tennis courts, football and cricket fields, a paintball arcade as well as an outdoor gym and jogging track. Also planned is Water Town, a paradise for aqua lovers, which will be home to Malibu Beach. This means that, just like DAMAC Hills, residents at DAMAC Hills 2 also won’t have to drive to the beach anymore, with a residential wave pool soon to be launched within walking distance from their home. Water Town will also have a wave surf pool, water slides for children and a boating lake, along with retail outlets and cafés offering residents scenic views of the green landscapes and the lake.

With FM transmitters in their cars, residents can enjoy their favourite movies on our huge drive-in screen while sitting in their cars without having to interact with anyone else.” Soon, the community will also unveil a paintball park, adding yet another attraction to the list of amenities within DAMAC Hills 2. “Among other developments, we are looking at building a large mosque very soon. A medical centre is also set to open its doors within the community. To further cater to families, we are looking for partners to open a school at DAMAC Hills 2. Also in the pipeline are sports courts, a dance studio, a karate studio and another attraction for little children with a huge birdcage and butterfly garden. Soon, you won’t have to leave the community anymore.” With remote working transforming people’s professional lives, access to distraction-free workspaces is key. DAMAC Properties has taken this into consideration and will soon launch a remote working zone combined with a recreational area within DAMAC Hills 2. “For residents who are working from home during the pandemic, our remote working spaces are styled with a twist. While the adults have WiFi access to continue working through their commitments,

Wellness retreat
With the pandemic, personal health is on everyone’s mind – whether it’s physical or mental. At the recent Global Wellness Summit, experts predicted that the demand for wellness therapies would skyrocket in the wake of the pandemic. Unsurprisingly, in the last few months, wellnessfocused resorts have blossomed around the world. Here in Dubai, the dynamic female duo, Sophia Bakkal and Rachel Dowes, co-founders of Beyond Wellness, have seen an unprecedented demand for wellness therapies. It has been promising, they said, and their work continues as they bring more wellness-focused retreats to guests in the region seeking a unique wellbeing experience. “Beyond Wellness is inspired by our personal transformation journeys over more than 15 years. Having explored close to a hundred renowned retreats around the world, it became clear that the majority of these focused on the physical being while forgetting that the spiritual, emotional and mental health aspects are equally important. Furthermore, while many retreats felt hugely transformative at the time, the crucial long-term support and community element beyond the retreat was missing and so it became easy to slip back into the old habits. Hence, Beyond Wellness was born,” Bakkal and Dowes revealed. “An entirely new concept, we offer a 360-degree mind, body and spirit experience encompassing physical, mental and spiritual wellness in its entirety. With a supportive global community and a team of wellness experts, we are always on hand to support our clients not only during but also after the retreat.”

Each retreat is led by the founders and the immersive programmes are designed to align body, mind and spirit, helping participants achieve balance, harmony and lasting fulfilment. Together, clinical hypnotherapist Rachel Dowes and international life coach Sophia Bakkal combine their experience to help participants reclaim and revitalise their lives, rejuvenate and realign the senses and reconnect with themselves, others and the world around. The programmes incorporate personal coaching, meditation, mindfulness and hypnotherapy-based modalities, one-on-one therapies and group workshops to achieve powerful and life-transforming results. Participants leave feeling equipped with all the practical life skills to take their learnings into the real world. With an aim to bridge the gap between luxury experiences provided by the world’s most exclusive resorts and the nurturing, peaceful support of a holistic healing sanctuary, Beyond Wellness retreats are set in some of the most tranquil and idyllic locations, such as the Maldives, Bali and Dubai. These retreats are held in the heart of nature as the duo believes that the natural environment is important for self-healing. “That is why we host all our retreats within picturesque surrounds, whether that be beside turquoise oceans, in the rolling dunes of the desert or on the top of a mountain.”

“Our Maldives retreat is one of our most popular short-haul experiences, since, for most participants, it is their first encounter with a true paradise. There’s nothing quite like seeing dolphins swimming by during a yoga session or meditating at night on the beach and witnessing bioluminescent plankton lighting up the entire ocean and transforming it into a field of glowing stars. “Here in the UAE, we’ve hosted three-day retreats everywhere, from the lush green gardens of five-star resorts through to sleek properties by the turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf, where we’ve meditated under the stars and swum with hawksbill turtles.”

Beyond Wellness also carefully curates its programmes to complement the surrounds in which they are offered. “We offer a variety of retreats to suit the needs of our guests, from long weekend retreats to week-long experiences. Our themes also vary, from transformative retreats for both men and women to women-only experiences, corporate programmes as well as couple and family retreats. “During the retreat, guests are invited to connect with body, breath and the stillness through many modalities. Our in-house coaching, hypnotherapy and integrative nutrition teams provide a wealth of guidance and support both during and after the retreat. Simultaneously, we offer a restorative full-board detox programme designed by a wellness chef. Packed with nutrient-rich vegetarian meals and juices, it helps to rid the body of toxins, restore vital nutrients, reclaim energy and enhance mental processing.” Beyond the retreat, Beyond Wellness also offers an online global community platform with a brilliant team of wellness experts on hand to support its guests’ various needs. “We regularly get together to support and celebrate the community’s progress. It’s amazing and humbling to see the incredible life transformations over the course of the retreat and beyond.” Vilamendhoo Island Resort & Spa, Maldives

TREASURED FINDS
Browse some of the most exceptional pieces from recent Christie’s auctions featuring items from the world of interiors that created the most buzz
ROYAL COPENHAGEN PORCEL AIN FLOR A DANICA PAR T DINNER SERVICE
Dating back to the 19th century, each item belonging to the Flora Danica porcelain collection tells an inspiring tale of Danish history. This year marks the 230th anniversary of this precious dinnerware and it’s still as enchanting as when it was first envisioned. Each item is finely hand painted with a botanical specimen, identified in Latin on the reverse. Expected to reach between AED30,000 and AED45,000, the lot eventually sold for a huge total of AED183,000.
THE LUBOSHE Z GONG
Rituals have always played a significant role in Chinese culture, and this held true even 3,000 years ago in the Shang dynasty. Often at the centre of those rituals were bronze vessels used for offerings of food or wine. This piece is a rare example of a wine vessel, which sold for over AED31 million at Asian Art Week in New York.
PAIR OF L ACQUER CABINE TS FOR THE 1S T DUKE OF W ELLINGTON
Part of the collection of Mrs. Henry Ford II in Palm Beach, the top lot of the auction was this pair of late Louis XV meubles d’appui, which fetched AED3 million – double the low estimate. It epitomises the taste of Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington and victor of Waterloo, who secured the collection upon his triumphant return to Paris in 1815.

CHINESE COROMANDEL T W ELVE-PANEL SCREEN
Sold for AED252,000, this piece from the Qing dynasty dates back to the 18th century and is considered the apogee of this type of decorative screen production. The combination of precise painting and carving highlights the intricate details on the coromandel screens. This example depicts a sprawling pavilion scene with figures in celebratory pursuits. The reverse is similarly decorated with a scene surrounded by mythical beasts and poetic inscriptions.
A GROUP OF T W ELVE ITALIAN MARBLE AND AL ABAS TER BUS TS OF EMPERORS
Depicting Julius Caesar, Tiberius, Claudius, Vitellius, Vespasian, Otho, Galba, Augustus, Nero, Caligula, Domitianus and Titus, this iconic piece features various types of marble and is supported on bronze plaques. It sold at a little over AED180,000, fetching six times its estimated value.
A FINE GILT WOOD AND VERNIS MAR TIN GR AND PIANO
In 1857, Steinway & Sons produced their first art-case grand piano with an elaborate case and lavishly carved legs. In the decades to follow, the New York piano manufacturer continued to produce pianos that mimicked popular furniture styles of that time using materials such as ormolu, exotic wood, lacquer, leather and brass to elevate their designs. Soon, these art-case pianos grew to become a status symbol in American society with examples found in the White House and in the mansions of New York’s elite. This stunner eventually sold for over AED1 million.

SPOTLIGHT ON FASHION | FINER THINGS
It is no secret that the fashion industry is big business throughout the Middle East. People have long travelled to the region to make designer purchases, while Arab Fashion Week has progressively grown in stature and has now become an important event on the international calendar. With fashion shows regularly held in Dubai, and with Saudi Arabia holding its first-ever runway event in Riyadh in 2018, the eyes of the fashion world are beginning to be drawn towards the Middle East. Yet even before events such as these brought new opportunities for emerging designers to showcase their work to a larger audience, a few names were already making waves in the international fashion industry.
THE GO-TO FEMALE FASHIONIS TA
What began as a passion project to design kaftans and gowns for friends and family while managing a busy family life, Saudi Arabian couture designer Honayda Serafi decided to set up her own brand in 2017. Determined to work alone and make her own mark, Serafi has become the epitome of the modern woman, balancing life as a designer, artist and businesswoman while being a mother and homemaker. Inspired by iconic women of the past and present, Serafi’s collections draw on the characteristics of personalities who have influenced her both in real life and from afar. From famous figures like the Queen of Sheba to the humble labourer in the fields or factory worker, she says that all play a part in the story that the brand has to tell, just as they have a role to play in society. Today, Serafi’s eponymous brand ‘Honayda’, which means a sword’s sheath in Arabic, has grown from its home base of Saudi Arabia and now has boutiques across Kuwait, Bahrain, Lebanon, Egypt, France and Panama. Contemporary cuts and fabrics help keep her collections appealing to all ages and cultures, and now she is dressing global figures the world over, from Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra to Rapper Eve, who wore one of her designs to the 2019 Grammy Awards. Olympic skater Lindsey Vonn dazzled in a Honayda look for the 2019 Oscars ceremony while actress Lupita Nyong’o, wore Honayda to the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas, wearing a masculine-cut suit by the designer, showing she can keep things both edgy and classy, fusing femininity and power. The A-list goes on and includes the likes of Gigi Hadid, Ashanti, Patricia Clarkson and Mary J Blige.

A L AS TING LEGACY
Khalid Al Qasimi left an indelible mark in the world of men’s fashion. The son of the ruler of Sharjah, he became the world’s first Emirati to truly make it to the upper echelons of a society new to the Gulf region. Founder of his eponymous brand Qasimi, he moved radically away from the kandoura-wearing traditions of his tribal roots and plunged head-first into another world, one inspired by western street style and military vibes, a melding of poetry and politics with fashion. Such was his legacy that his casual collection is stocked in over 50 stores in 15 countries. The designer’s death in 2019, aged just 39, was a tragedy at home and abroad. And while stepping into his shoes has been no easy task, his twin sister, Sheikha Hoor, has carried forward his legacy effortlessly. Last year, she debuted her first Spring/Summer 2021 collection, which was lauded for its military-style touches, with influences of the desert and sea felt in the colours.

Lili Reinhart in Khyeli Couture at the Golden Globes
One of the most prominent figures to emerge in recent years is British-born Iranian designer Lilian Afshar whose bug-adorned bags began to be featured in prominent style publications around the world. She created the initial buzz straight out of university by posting images of her latest creations on Instagram, which helped raise her profile. And before too long, some of the most influential figures in the world of entertainment were being pictured carrying Afshar’s creations. Models Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner were both spotted carrying L’Afshar bags. Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor was pictured with the label’s Lineas clutch, while American singer-songwriter Alicia Keys carried the Pagoda bag to a pre-Grammys event. The final stamp of approval came when one of Afshar’s bags was pictured on the arm of one of the music industry’s biggest superstars, Beyoncé, which helped catapult L’Afshar to another dimension as now, every celebrity wanted to purchase one of the uniquely designed clutches. Having gained an influential following, Afshar has continued to expand her range. But her key focus remains her signature marble-style clutch bags, which not only come in a broad range of colours but can also be customised and personalised. There are also a variety of unique textures, from crocodileembossed leather to clear crystal-cut acrylic. Such has been the success of the brand that L’Afshar is now stocked at high-end boutiques and famous department stores, as well as on e-commerce sites such as Net-a-Porter and Moda Operandi.

Lilian Afshar is far from the only success story in the Middle East. In fact, one of the most in-demand designers in the world is an Emirati national who completed his military service in the UAE, established a label in London and dressed Lady Gaga in Los Angeles in the space of just three years! Ahmed Alkhyeli is one of a new crop of designers whose roots are in the Arab world. Having grown up in Al Ain and studied architecture at the American University of Sharjah, the young Emirati chose to enter the world of couture and has quickly established a famous following. Having had to delay the launch of his brand, Khyeli, in order to complete his military service in 2016, Alkhyeli moved to London’s Knightsbridge and now has a showroom in Cavendish Square and a studio near Nottingham. And despite being a relative newcomer to the world of fashion, his designs have already garnered international recognition. Lady Gaga first wore the label for her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in February 2019 and just a few weeks later, she stepped out in a black cape from the brand’s SS19 collection while attending an event in Los Angeles. Actress Lili Reinhart also donned a red tulle to the Golden Globes, while English Victoria’s Secret supermodel Leomie Anderson wore a pink taffeta with a cape to an AmFar dinner in New York. Renowned for designing both elegant and extravagant dresses, Alkhyeli uses voluminous amounts of taffeta, dupion and satin, and is proud that his creations often nod back to his Middle Eastern roots. Certainly, his creations have proved popular and relevant with stars in both the Arab and western world.
People have long travelled to the region to make designer purchases, while Arab Fashion Week has grown in stature DRESSING HOLLY WOOD
It’s not just creatives from the UAE who are causing a stir in Hollywood, with the label Death by Dolls being worn by a host of A-list celebrities. The brainchild of Saudi Arabian designer Sara Al-Saud, the brand has a huge following in the Middle East and often features on prominent fashion blogs in the region. Thanks to a plethora of stars, Death by Dolls is becoming equally well known in the western hemisphere. Kendall Jenner appeared in a Chris Brown music video wearing a pair of the designer’s jeans, while Britney Spears wore a dress by Al-Saud when she announced she would be performing in Las Vegas. But once again, it was Beyoncé who perhaps did the most to raise the profile of the brand when she was pictured in a Halloween costume that paid tribute to American sprinter Florence Griffith Joyner. Alongside these talented artists are a host of young designers whose clothes are being worn by global superstars. Yousef Aljasmi from Kuwait has designed dresses exclusively for the Kardashian family, while Lebanon’s Lama Jouni has become a favourite of model and it-girl, Bella Hadid. Another regional favourite, Lebanese designer Georges Hobeika rules the red carpet almost every year at Cannes Film Festival, dressing the likes of Priyanka Chopra and Clotilde Courau. Zayan Ghandour is also a name to be reckoned with, thanks to her signature hand-embroidered motifs, custom illustrated prints and innovative cuts. Also hailing from Lebanon, the designer made her debut at Paris Fashion Week and recently established her first boutique in Dubai. With this storied success and the fashion world now paying closer attention than ever before to designers in the Middle East, it will not be long before a new generation of creatives is making their mark on the world’s most fashionable figures and international runways.

When the house first revealed the collection, Puglisi stated that he did not aim to rewrite the brand’s rich history. Respecting the brand’s DNA, he only sought to marry the past with the present. Season Zero, therefore, features Cavalli’s classic codes with animal prints and double slits.

LASTING LEGACY
Uncover history as you journey through the region’s marvellously preserved UNESCO World Heritage Sites that have stood the test of time
In 1978, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) began recognising several landmarks around the world for their cultural, historical, scientific and natural significance in an effort to conserve and preserve humanity’s shared heritage. As of April 2021, a total of 1,121 landmarks have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, ranging from nature’s masterpieces to primitive lands that have witnessed the rise and fall of empires. Several of these exist in the Arab world alone, from the famed Egyptian pyramids to Turkey’s lesser-known geological wonders. Each of these sites tells the story of the region in awe-inspiring ways, allowing visitors plenty of opportunities to discover the passage of time in ancient and modern Arabia.
Hegra The monumental remains of the lost kingdom of Hegra are evocative of the prosperity of this Nabataean city in its heyday. A thriving spice trade and its inhabitants’ ability to source, store and supply water to camel caravans made it an empire bound to flourish. Its historical significance made Hegra the first landmark in Saudi Arabia to acquire World Heritage Site status. While much of the ancient city still lies under layers of sand, the uncovered necropolis comprises 131 stone tombs inscribed with carvings of eagles, sphinxes and griffins.

Wadi Rum Protected Area
Although Jordan’s ancient city of Petra is one of the world’s most visited heritage sites, the country’s Wadi Rum Protected Area demands equal attention. The desert’s otherworldly wilderness has featured in several Hollywood movies, including The Martian, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The protected area, some 100 kilometres south of Petra, is locally known as “the valley of the moon” owing to its resemblance to the moon’s rocky surface. The landscape overflows with natural beauty made up of dramatic geological structures – gorges, rock bridges, cliffs, mountains and caves – that rise above the red sands. Moreover, the area has been continuously inhabited for over 12,000 years and ancient civilisations have left their footprints behind, which can be experienced through more than 25,000 rock carvings and inscriptions.

Bahrain Fort
Although Qal’at al-Bahrain was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, the landmark sits on an ancient mound, formed by centuries of urban rebuilding. It dates back to 2300 BCE, making it one of the oldest structures in the region with a storied past. It is believed that the site was the capital of the ancient Dilmun Empire, where locals conducted their day-to-day commercial activities. During the successive Tylos and Islamic periods in the region, it served as a maritime trading hub connecting civilisations around the world. Now transformed into a museum, visitors can wander the halls, learning how agrarian communities flourished in Bahrain through the archaeological finds displayed here.

Al Bass Tyre Necropolis
Local lore suggests that the discovery of purple dye can be traced to the Phoenician city of Tyre in 1550 BCE, although the town itself dates back to 2750 BCE. The subsequent trade of purple dye made this ancient port on the southern coast of Lebanon one of the wealthiest cities of its time. While its former glory has waned, the magnificent structures built by the Romans when they seized the city in 64 BCE still stand. Albeit in ruins, the striking architecture continues to demand attention, especially the triumphal arch and the enormous hippodrome. Past the arch, the avenue boasts mysterious beauty as it holds hundreds of ornate tombs and marble sarcophagi – a stark reminder of the fallen Phoenician kingdom.
Memphis and its Necropolis Believed to have been founded in 3000 BCE as the capital of ancient Egypt, Memphis was home to the kingdom’s rulers and a sacred temple, reserved for subjects to worship their gods. Today, the area is better known as the Pyramid Fields, stretching over 30 kilometres from Giza to Dahshur. At the northern end of the site, the imposing Sphinx seems to stand guard over the majestic pyramids of Giza. Often referred to as the last remaining wonders of the world, the pyramids have long lured travellers, who come to admire their sheer enormity and impeccable geometry. While some believe that these structures have unearthly origins, they stand as vivid reminders of life in ancient Egypt, built as grand tombs by thousands of workers on the orders of the pharaohs. While most tourists conclude their visit here, those seeking to explore more should venture south to the little-known complexes of Abu Sir, Saqqara and Dahshur, scattered with tombs, temples and smaller pyramids.
63
Bahla Fort
Looming over the Omani town of Bahla, this formidable structure sits at the base of the Jebel Akhdar mountains. It was built by local tribes in the Middle Ages to protect the nearby oasis and support the trade of frankincense to the rest of the region. Constructed out of sand-coloured stones and mud bricks, the complex is a perfectly preserved example of Islamic architecture, complete with labyrinthine passageways and alcoves. As you explore the twisted lanes on foot, stop to take in the panoramic views of the mountains and palm trees from the battlements.

Al Ain Oasis Nestled in the heart of Abu Dhabi’s garden city, Al Ain Oasis was chosen for its natural and cultural significance. This 1,200-hectare expanse is home to over 147,000 date palms of up to 100 varieties and numerous fruit trees. One of the best ways to explore the site is taking a stroll beneath the thick canopy of fronds that have endured countless desert summers. As you meander down the historic pathways, stop to admire the intricate 3,000-year-old irrigation network that runs beneath the oasis. Traditionally known as the falaj system, this channel highlights the agricultural practices that were prevalent in the region millennia ago. To this day, this age-old system continues to bring fresh water into the oasis by tapping into underground aquifers from the Al Hajar Mountain range as well as the Jebel Hafeet mountain.

The unique structure is the product of calcite-laden waters and it is made up of terraced basins, mineral forests and gently flowing pools. Tour de DAMAC In collaboration with Dubai Sports Council, DAMAC Properties held its first-ever cyclethon in March 2021 to cater to the growing community of cycling enthusiasts in the emirate. Held just outside the gates of its largest development, DAMAC Hills 2, the 60-kilometre race was a resounding success. Within the community, a separate race was hosted for children from five to 15 on a 6.8-kilometre cycle track.

Behind the scenes We explore what makes community life an enriching experience at DAMAC Hills

Spanning 42 million square feet across Dubailand, DAMAC Hills is home to an array of residential properties. As a high-end development, it boasts collaborations with world-renowned brands, such as Fendi Casa, Roberto Cavalli and Paramount Hotels & Resorts. Stylish villas and spacious apartments overlook the Trump International Golf Club, Dubai –one of the emirate’s largest golf courses – while four million square feet of lush greenery surrounds the development.
“Homely comforts, scenic views and evening walks are standard for those who stay at DAMAC Hills, where windows and doors look out onto an endless ocean of green,” said Payal Belani, Community Executive, LOAMS. “But the essence of community life is the range of amenities and activities on offer to meet all the recreational needs of its residents. At DAMAC Hills, these experiences are designed to allow residents to indulge in their favourite sport or activity without having to step out of the comfort of their community.”
71
A WORLD OF CONVENIENCE
Currently on offer for all residents at DAMAC Hills is an array of high-end facilities, including a gymnasium, swimming pool, healthcare centres, shopping complex, a supermarket, and salons. Malibu Bay – the UAE’s first residential wave pool – is popular among beach lovers as it gives them a chance to enjoy seaside vibes not too far from home. There is also an ice rink, a minigolf area, a hobbies club and multiple sports courts and fields for basketball, cricket, tennis and more. For families with little children, activity classes for toddlers and children are available in the community centre. Dining outlets and food trucks are dotted throughout the community, offering everything from world cuisines to quick bites, while Radisson Dubai DAMAC Hills has recently opened its doors, offering a wider selection of restaurants and recreational facilities to residents.
KEEPING RESIDENTS ENGAGED
While adhering to all COVID-19-related restrictions, DAMAC Hills hosts events all year round, with at least one planned for each month of the year, in the community centre, lounges or across its outdoor areas, depending on the season. Said ElHaouasli, Vice President – Facilities Management, LOAMS, said: “I could see the difference when we first started hosting events in DAMAC Hills in 2019. We started out with one event every week; we received great feedback and then our residents began expecting these on a regular basis. Prior to COVID-19, we had gatherings with food and bouncy castles for kids. And although we’ve now had to make a few changes to keep up with pandemic restrictions, our events are still very much enjoyed by community members.” DAMAC Hills currently offers events such as movie nights, arts and crafts activities for children, Earth Hour activities, fitness events, food festivals, cultural celebrations, flea markets and more. All these events take place while adhering to the rules issued by the government, with regular sanitisation taking place for the health and safety of those in attendance. “We consider our formula to be successful as this is now being emulated by other communities in Dubai, which means our team has to work harder to come up with unique and creative ideas to keep the community engaged and offer them something they can’t find elsewhere.

“That being said, the success we’ve enjoyed at DAMAC Hills has provided us with a model, which we can now incorporate into other DAMAC communities, especially at DAMAC Hills 2, where, thanks to its sheer size, these events can be executed on a larger scale,” said ElHaouasli.
R AISING THE BAR
Overall, DAMAC Hills ticks all the boxes when it comes to delivering on its promise of fulfilling community life. For investors, factors such as gated systems with security features, endless green landscapes and access to highend facilities make investing in DAMAC Hills a profitable proposition. Belani added: “Community living is also easy on the pocket as compared to living in an independent house as the asset is managed more effectively, giving investors access to home management facilities at a fraction of the cost.” But the quality of life within the community is what truly draws people to DAMAC Hills. “The neighbourhood opens doors to a better social life. The quality of life inside the community, with regular social events, encourages a sense of bonding among neighbours and helps forge new ties. Also, as the community boasts endless green expanses, it serves as a stress-buster. And altogether, these various factors contribute to a better lifestyle for each and every resident at DAMAC Hills.”

As one of the largest properties in the DAMAC portfolio, DAMAC Hills 2 offers a world of convenience and benefits to every resident who calls the community home. But for a propert y of its size, managing day-to-day operations within the neighbourhood is no easy task. For Said ElHaouasli, Vice President – Facilities Management, LOAMS, and his team, the essence of community management is bringing life to these plots. Behind the scenes, the team works tirelessly to ensure that families enjoy a sense of community within the neighbourhood and make the most of everything on offer. “Community management is like adding life to life. While a development is taking shape, the focus is on selling units. But after completion, when movement in the development begins and people start living in their recently purchased or leased homes, it is our responsibility to bring life to the community,” explained ElHaouasli.
MAINTAINING MOMENTUM
“Community management is an industry in itself and our job begins from the moment a unit is populated. Our primary responsibility is to keep our residents safe and secure. A key part of this involves maintaining records of everyone who lives in each of the units. We also have extensive digital records containing visitor information, so our residents can rest assured that their investment and their families are safe. “Our scope of work includes organising board meetings, committee meetings and annual general forums. We prepare financial audits, monthly expense reports, provide homeowners with detailed information, prepare service charges and issue invoices. Then there are operations such as issuing rules and regulations in the community, which residents need to abide by so that everyone can enjoy a pleasant experience.

Behind the scenes, we work tirelessly to ensure that those who live in the community enjoy regular access to activities, events and experiences to keep them engaged and entertained,” added ElHaouasli.
ENTER TAINMENT FOR ALL
DAMAC Properties believes that organising events is an important aspect of community management. And with the aim to make DAMAC Hills 2 an all-encompassing community, where residents wouldn’t have to venture outside the neighbourhood for entertainment, the team regularly organises a host of activities and events for residents. “We recently hosted a cyclethon and the people who participated loved it. We also organised a sports festival and our residents were excited to join in and watch a live sports event in their own backyard. To keep the community active, we also organise yoga lessons and Zumba classes. Events such as these give residents something that they don’t find elsewhere. “Prior to COVID-19, we would host gatherings with food, often with a live barbecue around the swimming pool. It made a huge difference to the community and we hosted residents in large numbers. The feedback we received was incredibly positive. Many residents expressed that before events began taking place regularly, they would only meet their neighbours while going about their errands. But now, these events give them a chance to socialise with their neighbours and get to know them better.”

TOGETHER IN TOUGH TIMES
When the pandemic first began, ElHaouasli noted that residents were apprehensive about cases in the neighbourhood. But the team worked hard to provide additional services and support. This included sanitising homes of affected residents and that of their neighbours. “The beginning of the pandemic was also a period of solidarity, where besides focusing on our normal operations, we also made it a point to extend additional support to our residents. For example, if any of our residents lost their jobs and were unable to make payments, we made sure to arrange basics for them, such as food, to show our support. “At the same time with COVID-19, we also witnessed an increase in homeowners and tenants in DAMAC Hills 2. With social distancing becoming the norm, life became more appealing in secluded communities. So, people traded buildings with elevators that could get crowded at peak hours for open, private spaces with more outdoor areas for children. He concluded: “Our efforts haven’t gone unrecognised as, at present, we have one of the highest occupancy rates than ever before across our property portfolio. This is an indicator of how happy people are with our services. In fact, we’ve noticed that even when homeowners face minor issues with their unit, they do not want to leave the neighbourhood because of the sense of community life they have experienced at DAMAC Hills 2.”

Trump International Golf Club, Dubai
At the heart of DAMAC Hills, Trump International Golf Club, Dubai, has become a leading destination in the emirate’s burgeoning golf community. Spanning 7,300 yards, this par-71 course offers state-of-the-art leisure and training facilities, providing the ultimate golfing experience in the emirate. The club boasts an 18-hole championship-style golf course along with a par-3 course that mimics its play and undulations. It was designed by world-renowned golf course architect Gil Hanse, who was selected to design the golf course for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. An extraordinary project that has quickly become a firm favourite among avid local, regional and international golfers, it features a 30,000-square-foot clubhouse, the largest of its kind in Dubai. While maintaining the course is no easy feat, Director of Agronomy, Benjamin Griffiths makes the role seem effortless with all the work he does behind the scenes. “To be involved with such a project was always a career goal and it has not disappointed,” he said. “Seeing the golf course at Trump International Golf Club, Dubai, transform from bare sand into a thriving golf club and community is extremely rewarding. I am proud to have played a pivotal role in this transformation.” As Director of Agronomy, Griffiths is responsible for the department’s day-to-day operations, such as management of the turf, landscape, irrigation system and other equipment. He supervises a team of 30 that helps set up the course ahead of play to ensure that the experience isn’t compromised by any maintenance snags.
Offering ideal playing conditions every day is the team’s primary goal as there are several challenges that arise because of the terrain and weather conditions. “The key challenges are based around the extremities of the climate as it can affect turf growth. “We have three types of Bermuda grass, all imported from the United States in refrigerated containers from certified turf farms. These are supplied to us as stolons, which are then planted and nurtured to create the fine turf around the course. But these are warm season grasses and they do not take well to Dubai’s winters. When the temperature dips, growth almost stops. Factoring in that Dubai’s winter is our busiest period of the year, it provides a real challenge to keep the turf healthy and alive.” Producing a high-performance turf in the UAE requires that moisture, salinity levels and soil chemistry are well managed. Although these factors contribute to ideal growing conditions, they change on a weekly – sometimes even daily – basis, making management more complex. On average, it takes anywhere from one to six million litres of water per day, depending on the time of the year, to nourish the grass. The heights of the cut also make a difference as no two courses are the same. At Trump International Golf Club, Dubai, there are five cuts, which vary throughout the year as the seasons change. “There are many pieces of the puzzle to create a well-maintained golf course and all these factors need to work together. That is why, timing is so important with all that we do.”

Embracing technology
Becoming a homeowner has never been easier, thanks to DAMAC’s integration of innovative technologies into the home buying and management process The process of purchasing a new home looks a lot different today than it did a few years ago. Digital applications have opened the doors to a new way of doing things and for most potential homeowners, this is a welcome change. Not only does digital automation streamline the various steps involved in becoming a homeowner but it also brings with it a high level of transparency, which makes the overall experience less overwhelming. At DAMAC, technology is integrated into every stage of the customer journey to make the experience as seamless and interactive as possible. And it begins right in the presale stage, giving potential customers the opportunity to browse through DAMAC’s extensive inventory and take a virtual 360-degree tour of their dream home. An integral step, it helps lay the foundation for a positive relationship with the customer as it helps identify their specific needs and make informed decisions about going ahead with the purchase.
ONE-S TOP SHOP
“We sought to build a seamless journey for the customer in a single, common platform, which starts with an inventory showcase based on comprehensive selection criteria. On this platform, they can view their potential new home, browse through floor plans, review payment plans and read through home buying agreements,” said Ajay Rathi, Vice President - IT, DAMAC Group. “On the same platform, provisions have been made for customers to submit their documents if they choose to go ahead with the purchase. Digital channels are also made available on the system for customers to collaborate with our offices and agents, manage their requests and sign contracts,” he added. The platform makes virtual home tours from anywhere in the world possible as cutting-edge technology is utilised to bring houses to life on the screen. Handovers can also be managed similarly, enabling customers to remotely take ownership of their apartment, no matter where in the world they might be based. It is, therefore, a one-stop solution, where every process of the journey can be seamlessly tracked, eliminating the need to pore over endless documentation for hours to ensure that everything is in place. According to Rathi, the platform was inspired by the need to “build a unified system for sales and admin teams to manage assets, communications, approvals, workflow with departments, customers and other relevant stakeholders with minimal offline activities and transactions.” This has proved especially beneficial in reducing face-to-face interactions at a time when social distancing and minimising personal contact has become a priority as the world continues to come to grips with the current crisis. In spite of this digital-first approach, there are no compromises to the element of human touch, which is an essential part of the customer journey. Tying the overall experience together is that personal touch that DAMAC’s relationship managers bring by greeting customers with a smile, hearing them out patiently and understanding their perspective to ensure a pleasant home-buying experience.

In spite of this digitalfirst approach, there are no compromises to the element of human touch, which is an essential part of the customer journey DIGITAL CONNEC TIONS
“DAMAC is always at the forefront of technological advancement across multiple verticals. Leveraging cutting-edge technology to reach the right customer and to provide better services to all our stakeholders is in the DNA of the organisation,” explained Rathi. Aligning with this philosophy, DAMAC has developed a number of digital solutions to cater to a variety of needs. At the forefront of this digital development is the DAMAC Living app, which is a go-to platform for homeowners to manage everything, from payments to requests. “We created the DAMAC Living platform for customers to manage their property, request services remotely and on the go, use amenities, review fees, make service charge payments and keep up to date about community know-how, events, news and upcoming features. “From the moment our customers board the DAMAC ship, every service they might need is available to them through the DAMAC Living app. This makes it the go-to place for homeowners to manage their day-to-day interactions with DAMAC without calling or visiting our offices.” Through the DAMAC Living app, customers can also request and book amenities within the community. Taking this relationship one step further, DAMAC residents can also avail discounts from various vendors through the app. Although there is so much to offer, there is always room for new developments. Rathi concluded: “There are various other features in the pipeline that will further enhance and make interactions between customers and DAMAC seamless.”

HANDOVERS | THE BUSINESS END
DAMAC Hills
The customer’s journey through the real estate process has many defining moments, from that first look at their dream home to moving in. Perhaps, the most gratifying of them all is the handover, as it marks a final step for both customers and the handover team. It follows weeks (and sometimes months) of preparations, from identifying snags to ensuring every single requirement has been met before the customer receives the keys to their new home. And while the process might seem time consuming and overwhelming, the team at DAMAC goes the extra mile to ensure the customer’s interests remain protected so that they can confidently take possession of their investment. “While a whole host of processes go on behind the scenes, the official handover stage begins when we notify the customer that their unit is ready for possession,” said Jamal Abu Shareef, Vice President – Handover, DAMAC Group.
UP TO PAR
In most cases, customers are ready at the first stage of handover to receive their keys and begin living in their home. Yet, while a lot of effort is taken to ensure that the property is in pristine condition at this stage, a few snags are likely to arise. Although minor, the team prioritises these fixes so that when the customer finally moves in, they are fully satisfied with the condition of their unit. “We work as swiftly as possible to rectify all snags within a period of two weeks. This follows another inspection to ensure that the customer is happy with the fixes. And when the customer is truly satisfied that all their requirements have been met, we consider the process complete,” explained Abu Shareef. “Of course, there are other steps that homeowners themselves look after, such as connecting utilities, including electricity and water. But once all these steps are complete, we arrange an appointment with the customer to release the keys to their brand new home.”
DIGITAL ASSIS TANCE
In order to ensure that the final handover processes take place optimally, DAMAC has adopted the latest technology to deliver a smooth and seamless experience. The DAMAC Living app has been developed for this purpose.
“All processes related to handovers can be accessed through the DAMAC Living app,” said Abu Shareef. “We encourage our customers to use the app as this technological solution helps not only simplify but also enhance their journey. It enables them to book viewings and connect utilities in one single platform, which means all the steps involved can be managed at the click of a button.”
DAMAC has adopted the latest technology to ensure a smooth and seamless handover TOGE THER, E VERY S TEP OF THE WAY
While technology continues to simplify transactions and interactions, equal attention is paid to ensuring that the customer has a pleasant experience with the handover team. Members are trained to do their best while looking after customers during this stressful process and give them the most pleasant handover experience possible. “We do our very best to meet our customers’ expectations during the handover process. This means answering all the questions that might arise during the handover and during the inspection process. Whether it’s connecting utilities, receiving the keys, learning more about the community or understanding how service charges work, our knowledgeable staff takes great care in comprehensively communicating these processes to our customers so that they have all the knowledge they need for a successful handover and finally moving into their new home.”

STANDARDS
The customer service team at DAMAC Properties goes the extra mile to ensure a smooth, seamless experience for every homeowner
Investing in a new home can take prospective buyers – especially firsttimers – on an emotional roller coaster ride. A home, after all, is not an everyday purchase with a one-step decision and action. Buyers are investing in their future, in a place where they will grow old, their children will grow up and where memories will be made for a lifetime. Throw financial decisions into the mix and the entire process seems overwhelming. During any real estate transaction, each step comes with its own challenges, whether it’s finding a home that ticks all the boxes or facing issues after handover. That is why, DAMAC Properties believes in continuously enhancing its customer service department to assist buyers along the way. Team members are handpicked and regularly trained in order to ensure a pleasant experience for the customer, from start to finish.

E XCELLENT SERVICE
“Customer relationship management (CRM) is an amalgamation of thought through strategies and best practices, which when combined with the right technology transcends into outstanding customer experience,” said Abhishek Mudgal, Director – CRM Operations, DAMAC Group. “We are in constant pursuit to improve our processes and continuously redefine our working methodologies to stay on par with the industry standards. Therefore, at DAMAC, there are several systems in place to facilitate this.” He added: “We have an evolving contact centre that works 24/7 all year round to provide customer service across varying geographies. Accessibility is key to our business. We have centralised our customer service channels

BEHIND THE SCENES
The customer’s journey with DAMAC begins from the moment they set their sights on a property. A DAMAC representative is appointed at this stage to assist the customer on his way to becoming a homeowner. Offering insight into the process, Mudgal said: “Acquiring a customer is a process that is initiated by our sales department. We in the CRM department then focus on continuously engaging with the customer to promote retention. “Each one of us in the CRM department undergoes vigorous training to master the art of building relationships with trust and loyalty, and eventually, both parties benefit from the organic growth. “For example, when our homeowners bring more customers through word of mouth or other product-driven loops, the chain carries on, therefore bringing CRM to a full circle. That is the essence of our department.” For the customer service team, the handover is not the end of the road. In fact, DAMAC Properties goes the extra mile to keep these connections alive. “We have a team of account managers who are in constant touch with our customers, be it a special occasion in the customer’s life, a milestone achieved or a cultural celebration. They can be sure to find us right beside them.”

“At DAMAC, we believe in optimising opportunities and creating limitless boundaries” THE VOICE OF THE CUS TOMER
Every customer today is acutely aware of what good service looks like and a seamless customer service experience has never been more important. But challenges are an inevitable part of the life-cycle of the customer. Therefore, in order to ensure that every stage, from presale through to handover and beyond, is smooth and stress-free, DAMAC seeks to constantly improve upon its services. And this is where customer feedback plays an important role. “Accountability is a virtue in our line of work. At DAMAC, we encourage our customers to voice their opinion. This enables us to understand their needs better. The aim is to listen and understand before we respond. “Interaction with the customer across all channels used at DAMAC is supported with a feedback form, which is then utilised to understand the voice of our customers. We have an in-house team of subject matter experts and their core responsibility is to tap into all communication channels utilised by customers to express their opinion. The feedback received is analysed to understand their needs and thereby develop mechanisms to evolve our customer satisfaction levels. “But that’s not all, the management ensures to personally take the time out to meet any customer whose journey can be enriched by offering them solutions that are amicable. Because at DAMAC, we believe in optimising opportunities and creating limitless boundaries to show that we care.”

CUSTOMER PERSPECTIVE | THE BUSINESS END
The INSIDE STORY
We speak to Khaled Al Nablsee, a homeowner at DAMAC Hills 2, who shares his experience with DAMAC Properties Investing in a family home is a big step. There are a host of factors to consider before shortlisting a property that ticks all the boxes for each family member. For Khaled Al Nablsee, a c c es s to g r een outdo or spaces, play areas for his children and the support of a dedicated team were key requirements. And at DAMAC Hills 2, he was able to bring his vision of his family home to life. We go behind the scenes for a tour of his luxurious villa.
Did you face any challenges in the handover process? “When I f irst received my villa, it did not meet my specif ic requirements. I like living in luxury and as the property would become my family home, I wanted some more changes. The team at DAMAC was with me every step of the way. I am grateful to Engineer Bilal Al Najjar and the consultants who worked with me, patiently providing me with drawings and helping me acquire the necessary approvals. They were very helpful throughout the whole process, and not just the DAMAC Properties team but also the facilities management team, LOAMS, who continues to manage the property even after handover. In case of any complaints, the manager attends to those issues immediately. I would like to thank the team for their continuous service.”
What factors did you consider when looking for a home? “The choice of developer was one of the first factors on our list. We wanted to work with a company that is well known. We also considered the amenities available within the community as access to outdoor spaces, play areas and pools is important for families with children.”
As the owner of the most luxurious villa in DAMAC Hills 2, can you tell us what inspired the design process? “I travel a lot all over the world and stay in some of the world’s most luxurious hotels; inspiration can be found everywhere. Plus, I chose one of the best interior design companies in Dubai (Classic Home) and worked with them to develop ideas to suit my personal tastes. The process involved going through several designs and choosing the right material to get to where we are now.”
What made DAMAC Hills 2 the ideal choice? “A home should offer a sense of calm and relaxation to the people living in it. And for me, lush, green spaces do just that. So when a sales representative introduced me to the DAMAC Hills 2 development, the landscaped areas caught my attention.”
Tell us about your experience living in DAMAC Hills 2. “It’s wonderful. There are upgrades and updates every day. We enjoy the petting zoo and the fitness facilities. And we are very much looking forward to the opening of the paintball park and butterf ly garden.”
And why did you choose to work with DAMAC? “DAMAC’s sales team has been excellent from the get-go and the property developer has always been popular in the real estate realm in the region.”
What made Dubai the best choice for investment? “Dubai is a very safe place and here, every investor can get his value for money. People can invest in the city without thinking twice and rest assured that their investment will be protected.”
