Spring has sprung, and we are now into the fun half of the slippery dip.
Think warmer weather, Spring flowers, beer festivals, Spring Racing carnival and property selling season. It’s full on, but with the temperature rising, all the Beaches party people will be out to play.
Beaches COVERED. Spring 2022 People: ‘is any number of persons considered as a whole’.
When you delve deep down and look at anything, People are what really matters. All the running around working, making money, buying houses, sports, entertainment, religion, holidays, relationships; just stop a minute and think about it.
People are always at the core. They are everything.
The Labor force or should I say lack thereof at the moment sums it all up. When the people are no longer there, what happens?
This season, we focus on some of the people who make the Beaches just that little bit greater. And by that, I mean, cool and serious stuff.
Welcome to the team, The Yacht Life; you know, those uber rich that have mega boats. Well, you too can have a taste of the life too. Just ask the man, Sam.

People can do great things. I was left speechless and a little bit teary at the opening of the new venture for Manly Skiff Club, the 15 million dollar brand new St George Sailing Club down in Sans Souci. Two sailing clubs joined forces to save a club and transformed a space into a spectacular entertainment venue you must visit soon.
The Eagles Nest Business Club is full of small business people making a mark. In our ‘People of the Beaches’ feature, we asked some quick quiz Beach questions to our newest Member of Parliament, Dr Sophie Scamps amongst others. Find out the fun facts you definitely don’t know.
The incredible artistic talent on and around the Beaches is unfathomable.
It’s property buying season with lots of new houses on the market with Upstate. Work with a professional buyers advocate by giving Fiona Landreth a call.
Finally, it’s the reno that keeps on giving; the Backyard. We drop you a few tips and can even hook you up with a Spa from Splashes Spa World to make it that extra bit special.

RADOLESCENT
Following the release of their EP, ‘Excellent People’, and sold out performances across the country, supporting Aussie punk royalty Beddy Rays, Dune Rats, Bad//Dreems, Private Function and Press Club, Radolescent has released a fiery new single ‘Tough’.
Led by country-inspired slide guitar meets punk rhythm, their new single further establishes the band’s unique and creative prowess.
“‘Tough’ in essence, is a song akin to the feeling of someone close to you becoming a stranger right before your eyesa probing sense that maybe they weren’t the person you thought they were, and you weren’t the person they hoped you were either, “ says the band.
Working with Brisbane based engineer and producer, Brock Weston (Bugs and Electric Zebra), this new single was first tested out at their live shows.
“The crowd’s reaction was super positive so we decided to record it alongside our previous single ‘Pity Party’,” said lead vocalist and guitarist, Isaac Atkinson.
Showcasing their creative spark and versatility in creating songs that punch you in the gut, their new single is the result of bass guitarist Lachlan Barker. After writing what was a somewhat country-esk vibe of a song, Lachlan brought the tune to the rest of the band and was converted into a fullblown rock song; an application of big drums, power chords and a beautiful slide guitar.
Racking up a massive fan base has already given the band half a million streams across Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube, and on Triple J, Rebel FM and 4ZZZ.
JET CITY SPORTS CLUB
Sydney quartet Jet City Sports Club has unveiled their shimmering indie pop tune ‘Green Thumb’. Lead vocalist, Lilla Obradovic uses witty metaphors to illustrate how easily we can abandon relationships, and this new release further establishes Jet City Sports Club as one of Sydney’s premier fresh indie-pop voices.
“I started writing ‘Green Thumb’ one afternoon when I looked around my apartment and realised I only had one houseplant that was still alive. So, I suppose I started thinking, ‘I hope I don’t neglect relationships like I do my plants!’
“Our guitarist, Jack O’Connor is really good at bringing light summery, anthemic themes with fun, catchy riffs into our music. We just built on that before taking it to the rehearsal studio and our Producer, Fletcher Matthews,” says Lilla.
‘Green Thumb’ is comparable to the long-time pioneers of indie sound, The Sundays, but with a unique Australian edge similar to their contemporaries The Buoys and Teenage Joans. Slicing through the sun-kissed vibes of Lilla’s vocals is Sebastian de Haas’ bass and Dominic Maher’s drum, and finally with Jack’s perfectly executed layer of guitar throughout the song that ties it all together.
“Usually Jack and I will come up with the initial lyrics and chords of a song separately and then we will take the new song to band practice where we will flesh out new riffs and structure,” says Lilla.
Having recently supported Hayley Mary, The Grogans, Planet and Annie Hamilton, the band will be back on the road playing their new single and tracks from their EP in NSW and Melbourne. The band will also be supporting The Vanns for their shows on NSW’s Far North Coast.
“As we build our audience and following, we love taking new music on the road and meeting new people,” says the band.

OLY SHERMAN YAWDOESITALL
Sydney’s Oly Sherman has delivered another blissful hit of indie-soul music in ‘Taste’. Driven by an insatiable bassline and addictive vocals, it’s a fresh insight into more new music to come.
Recorded at Sherman’s home studio, ‘Taste’ has been a project that the artist worked on with engineer Daniel Natoli. The sound is all-encompassing in its warm tone and texture.
“After around eight months of making new music, the idea with ‘Taste’ was to make something that people could dance to. The song is honestly about being grateful and to just enjoy life,” says Oly.
Sherman’s versatility and strength as a songwriter is revealed in this album, Land Of All Pretend, while also pointing to the energy he was harnessing towards future projects.
Vocal hip hop, Yawdoesitall, is back with his most confident and urgent release yet: G.Y.M.
The track ‘G.Y.M.’ channels Yaw’s pent-up energy in a way that speaks to everyone who is hustling to elevate and materialise happiness for themselves and their community.
Recorded during a lockdown in his home studio in Sydney, Yaw describes the single as
“a track that almost didn’t make it.” Yet, listening through each passionate bar, it feels up there with some of Yaw’s hardest records to date.
“G.Y.M. is about going for it. It’s about materialism and happiness combined. G.Y.M. means soft life, but sometimes we have to jump through hoops to get it. This is my rise up song for whenever there’s a feeling of defeat.”

MUSIC
BOYSNLOVE ART VS SCIENCE
Mixing angst-pop melodies with low fidelity and vibrant instrumentals, BoysnLove have made a mark for themselves across Sydney and Wollongong.
Performing alongside the likes of Middle Kids, Tia Gostelow and Tyne-James Organ, the quartet have emerged as Australian front-runners for emotional and raw indie-pop. New single, ‘Honeymoon Diver’, combines the delicate and fraught vocals of singer and songwriter Annie-Rose Collis. The song of heartbreak and betrayal sets the band up for an electrifying 2022, with more music on the horizon.
The new single examines loss and longing from an alternative perspective. The song is inspired by the true story of Tina Watson, a woman drowned to death by her husband on their honeymoon. This struck vocalist Annie-Rose deeply and inspired her lyrical prouse throughout the song. Acclaimed Sydney singer-songwriter-collaborator Blain Cuneen (Julia Jacklin, Dominic Breen) worked with BoysnLove shaping the song from the initial musings of Annie-Rose’s grief-stricken mind to the final single heard today.
“Boysnlove songs always start from my heartbreak. It’s the reason why I write - to get my feelings out. I write the words, then Eddie, the band’s Bass, focuses on the structure of the songs from my words. Holly, our drummer, creates the tone and vibe of the song and Georgia makes everything sound great,” says Annie-Rose.
The band worked with Molly Haddon (Sydney Film Festival) on the music video. In the video, Annie-Rose plays the bride with her new beau on their honeymoon. He disappears as Annie-Rose is seen changing sheets, scrubbing the bathroom and removing any trace of his blood.
An intricate and emotive track ,‘Honeymoon Diver’ sets the tone that carries a delicate topic through a winding path of fear, hindsight and loss.
Sydney electronic dance band Art vs Science have released their long-awaited new album ‘Big Overdrive’. The vibepacked record, written and recorded over the past decade includes their recent dancefloor-ready single ‘I Saw You’, ARIA club hit ‘SWEAT’ and new single ‘Check The Boombox’
Rich in melodies, synth stabs and classic Art vs Science experimentation, ‘Big Overdrive’ is a collection of songs that captures the heights of the trio as a groundbreaking alternative dance band, pushing musical boundaries with crafted multi-layered bangers.
Sonically, ‘Big Overdrive’ lives and breathes in a way that can be played live to an intimate club audience or to a festival crowd. It’s also a celebration of the band’s longevity performing together for fifteen years. The music was recorded in studios all around Sydney, with a heavy emphasis on DIY. The bulk of the album was tracked at band member Dan McNamee’s parents’ place using a handful of microphones and a bucketload of vibe.
“In the course of selecting the music for this long awaited album, some of these rare sessions were uncovered, and the joy and fun embedded within were plain to hear. Of course, lots of love and expertise came from actual outside experts such as Kim Moyes (The Presets), Alex Gooden (Mix Engineer, SAFIA), Sam Ford (Tone City Records), Joe La Porta (Mastering, Sterling Sound), and Guy Davies (Mastering, Electric Mastering),” says vocalist, Jim Finn.
“
‘Big Overdrive’ is a celebration of jamming and making music which is fun, different and experimental, with an emphasis on songs which are beautiful in their weirdness.”
Art vs Science will be returning to the festival stage playing at the Caloundra Music Festival late September, and playing along bands like Flight Facilities and Lime Cordiale at Wine Machine Food, Wine and Music Festival in December.

Celebration
Thirsty Merc have been waiting two years for the chance to get back on the road and play live again.
Now, the Australian rock band is ready for “Celebration”—an album and tour that will see them get back on the tour bus and back on stage to perform their popular songs alongside tracks from their new album.
“It’s been an extremely rewarding experience for us to explore some of the best Aussie songs on the new album. Perhaps the biggest celebration though is for all live music fans. After a few crazy years, we’re all still here together. Gigs are back, and we want to be there to help you let your hair down,” says Frontman Rai Thistlethwayte.
The new album is a collection of reimagined Australian songs from the band’s own catalogue and beyond, including a turbo-charged rendition of Daryl Braithwaite’s ‘As The Days Go By.’
Other songs include Who Listens To The Radio (The Sports), That’s When I Think of You (1927), Bad Habits (Billy Field) and Hey There, Georgie Girl (The Seekers).
The “Merc quirk” on the recordings will be enjoyable to music fans, and recalling what makes each a great Australian song will lead many listeners to appreciate them even more.
Thirsty Merc’s journey as a band has taken them to unexpected places, with five ARIA Award nominations, 250,000 album sales under their belt and a finalist in the APRA Song of the Year for 20 Good Reasons, which also reached #1 on iTunes in Australia.
They have found their way into the fabric of Australia’s musical landscape with songs such as Someday Someday, In The Summertime, 20 Good Reasons and Tommy And Krista.
“We hope to see you at one of the upcoming shows.”
Thirsty Merc will be performing live at the Manly Leagues Club this December.

mark Smith Politics
Politicians will often use the term ‘fails the pub test’ when criticising their opponents’ policies or statements.
The ‘pub test’ is whereby such a statement or policy is ridiculed by the general public. It is astonishing then that these same people do things that obviously fail that test, and then wonder why they are taken to task by the media.
Former Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, took on extraordinary powers over five ministries during the pandemic. He kept this from the public.
Good Prime Ministers over the years, such as Bob Hawke and John Howard took the public with them, even going to elections with unpopular policies (think GST 1998), because they believed it was for the best for the country.
Morrison is now saying that his decision to take this action was for that reason. But if this was the case, he should have been open and honest from the start.
Former Deputy Premier of NSW, John Barilaro was instrumental in creating overseas trade positions (surely this is the job of the federal government), in countries such as the UK and the US. Then after retiring from politics, he miraculously was awarded the job in New York.
Now, politicians should of course be able to get a job after they leave office, but there is a definite failing of the ‘pub test’ here.
It is shocking, but not surprising at the hubris of these people, and to me, it only strengthens the
case for a federal integrity commission like the one in NSW.
I’m not saying that the actions of both these men are corrupt or illegal, but morally, they have questions to answer.
Politics in the US have become increasingly toxic and hyper partisan.
Votes along party lines are happening almost every time legislation comes before their house and senate.
And recently, with every change of the majority in those chambers, the former opposition party launches inquiry after inquiry persecuting the previous administration.
There doesn’t seem to be any easy road back for them. Here in Australia, I can sense things going the same way.
I believe that investigations into certain behaviour and policy decisions and processes are important, but too many will lead the public to think the government is not focused on the job at hand, and too petty and political.
Currently, Scott Morrisons’ actions have not been found to be illegal, but certainly an overreach. Is him losing the Prime Ministership punishment enough?
Put rules in place by all means to stop it happening again, but yet another taxpayer funded inquiry?
I do believe that a far-reaching Royal Commission into the handling of the pandemic by all levels of state and federal governments is necessary.
There are definitely lessons to be learned from that.•

It is no secret the Manly electorate is the best place in Australia to live, work and raise your family. From North Head to Curl Curl, to Seaforth, Clontarf, and everywhere in between, our corner of the world is packed with natural beauty.
But what really makes the Manly community so special is our people, who dedicate much of their time to the causes that are important to them. Following the theme of this edition, I have decided to highlight a very small sample of community members dedicated to making Manly even better than it already is.
CRAIG SUSANS QUEENSIE SURF CLUB –
Craig Susans is a Life Member at Queenscliff SLSC where he has volunteered for the past 40 years. Craig is a wonderful member of our community whose organisational and people skills help bring people together.
SEAN ROUT HARBORD DIGGERS – Sean
Rout is a Freshwater local, having been a member of the RSL movement for over 35 years. Currently serving as President of Harbord Diggers RSL SubBranch, he organises the local ANZAC and Remembrance Day services each year. Sean is an avid historian, initiating local projects at Soldiers Avenue and Jacka Park. In 2019, Sean organised an Australian flag to be flown at the war memorial in Villers Bretonneux, France which was then donated to Harbord Public School. He is a pillar of our community.
COL JOHN PLATT, CSC (RETD.) – Col Pratt is a Balgowlah local, currently the longtime Chair of the Australia Remembers Committee overseeing with dedication and passion the annual Defence of Sydney Service at North Head. Col Platt was the last commander of the School of Artillery at North Head and is a valued Director of the Manly Life Saving Club.
LYNNE AND PHIL YOUNG – As Clontarf locals, they are the long-serving Secretary and
President of Clontarf Community Forum. They raise concerns with the Council and successfully advocate on issues such as Clontarf Pool and Playground, to traffic matters to improve parking in the area and slow down traffic in local streets.
LLOYD KEEN (WITH HIS WIFE DENISE KEEN) –Lloyd is a hard-working enthusiastic member of our electorate of Manly. Up until recently, Denise and Lloyd lived adjacent to the Ivanhoe Park Botanical Gardens. This led to Lloyd generating community support for the NSW Government to support the establishment of Botanic Gardens. The Gardens exist today because of the Friends of the Gardens, and they have a bright future in the heart of Manly.
VALE RAY MATHIESON – A former long serving Chair of Manly Community Forum (formerly Little Manly Precinct Committee), Ray gave his time selflessly on numerous former Manly and current Northern Beaches Council’s committees, advocating ceaselessly for issues the community was concerned with. Ray was highly regarded by locals and leaders of our community alike.
DELENE EVANS – A long term member of the Balgowlah Heights community, Delene has been both Secretary and President of North Harbour Community Forum. Working with Local and State Government on local issues, she prosecutes these issues in her typical professional and efficient manner.
MEL KOEMAN – Mel is a passionate member of our community who has recently set up Manly Lagoon Friends. Mel and the team are wanting the Lagoon to be improved, protected, and restored for future generations to enjoy.
MATTY ABEL AND OLLY WOOLRYCH – They are innovative, passionate, and enthusiastic Manly locals. In addition, they are cofounders of Vipers RC which was set up
to engage men (like myself) in running and supporting one another.
JACQUI EMERY – Part of the Royal Far West Family in Manly, she was appointed in 2021 as the new CEO. Jacqui champions the Royal Far West cause with passion and dignity, always promoting the crucial work the RFW does for children in the country.
SHIRLEY MASHMAN – She’s the passionate and long serving president of United Hospital Auxiliaries Manly Branch. Shirley leads the Branch with professionalism and enthusiasm for their many activities, with a new focus on the new Manly Adolescent & Young Adult Hospice at North Head.

CHANTELLE HOARE AND MONIQUE EGGELING – Executive Officers of Manly Business Chamber, members witness their professionalism assisting their President Charlotte Rimmer to promote and advocate for businesses in Manly.
Being able to serve these fantastic community for over the past 5 years has been and continues to be a great honour. I look forward to continuing to deliver great projects to support the local community. •

$15 million St SailingGeorgeClub
St George Sailing Club was set to close its doors until cross-harbour rivals Manly16ft Skiff Club came to the rescue. Here’s how an unlikely alliance grew into a powerhouse.
It’s fair to say both parties eyed each other with some scepticism and wariness when Manly 16ft Skiff Club emerged as the leading candidate to take over the financially stricken St George Sailing Club a decade ago.
Some rusted-on St George members were concerned the cashed-up “blow-ins” from the Northern Beaches would eradicate the club’s past, bullishly steamrolling their way onto “their” turf.
On the Manly side of the equation, several members questioned why the club would risk jumping into bed with a struggling club on the other side of town.
The Manly board ignored the naysayers, took a deep breath and made the biggest call in the club’s 100-year history.
18 // SOCIAL ST GEORGE SAILING CLUB - SANS SOUCI
PHOTOGRAPHY: ST GEORGE SAILING CLUB
“I’m not sure what you’d call the decision – stupid or gutsy?” Manly 16ft Skiff Club President, Rolf Cohen, said with a laugh after the official opening of the brand-new St George Sailing Club in late August.
“Both sides took a risk and both sides had to learn to trust each other.”
The $15m project – designed by Jon Jacka Architects and built by Join Constructions over three years - is a game-changer for both clubs.
It’s Manly’s first commercial venture outside its traditional base and sits neatly in its charter to marry a successful licensed venue while propagating sailing across a range of classes.
For St George members and the local community, they have witnessed a stunning phoenix rise from the ashes.
Sitting over Botany Bay and the Georges River at Sans Souci, the club offers stunning views in three directions, two bars, a bistro with a seafood-inspired menu, extensive drinks list, a multipurpose function room and resort-style outdoor decking.
Stylish boat storage areas at the entrance to the club enhances the overall feel, seamlessly blending old and new.
The Andrew family is synonymous with St George Sailing Club; the connection going back three generations.
Jack Andrew was less than a week old when he first visited the club and, more than 40 years later, is now the sailing manager, acting as a conduit between Manly and St George.
“We were looking at a million dollars’ worth of debt. Renovations were needed to make it a viable venue, and there was no way the club was going to trade its way out of it,” he said of the old St George premises.
“It had turned into a country pub-style place where you’d drop in for a couple of schooners and bet on the horses.
“It’s amazing the amount of interest in the new club. Just from the word on the street, it’s already the place to be.
“If 10 percent of the people who have told me they will go actually go, the club will be packed every night.”
Manly has used its Northern Beaches venue as the blueprint for St George, replicating the menu and drinks list and adopting Executive Chef Justin Wong and Head Chef Jono Dobbin to run the kitchen.
Venue Manager John Tsambouniaris will be stationed at St George after 22 years at both clubs, while longserving Secretary-Manager Matt Hazell will split his time between the two during the bedding-in process.
“This project has had a few different iterations, and the one we came up with at the end was to try and build a new version of Manly that ticked all the boxes,” Hazell said.
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. It’s almost a franchise-type thing where we get to replicate Manly but do it in a bigger kitchen with a bigger bar area and floor space.”
Beaches COVERED. was a guest at the official launch party and can report almost 100 percent satisfaction among patrons.
The emotion when key figures from Manly and St George spoke on opening night was palpable. The project clearly one borne out of mutual respect and a love for sailing.
“I get overwhelmed by the amount of people who come up and say ‘thankyou Manly, this is amazing, you’ve saved us’,” Cohen said.
“But this really comes from a love of sailing for me and most of the people involved in the amalgamation.
“We explained to them at the outset that at Manly, it’s not just about making money. It’s about skiff sailing as well.
“I think they can see that we’ve been true to our word. The area has this fantastic new facility for the whole community to enjoy, while sailing also prospers.”
With members enjoying reciprocal rights to both clubs, plans are underway to implement a transport system to ferry patrons between the two venues. •

“JUST FROM THE WORD ON THE STREET, IT’S ALREADY THE PLACE TO BE.”
In it’s first season, the Eagles Nest Business Club generated around $250,000 worth of business for its members, and the Northern Beaches B2B Networking group is going from strength to strength, with a new get-together planned each month.
“Majority of the businesses in our group have paid off if not doubled the cost being a member,” says Andrew Towner, Managing Director of Fancy Forks Hospitality and Founder of the Eagles Nest Business Club. “One member generated over $25,000 in our first season.”
The objective of The Eagles Nest Business Club was to give business owners a glimpse into the inner sanctum of a Corporate Partnership, and the opportunity to meet and do business with other local business owners.
“Our goal is to generate strong business relationships within the group with an objective to help move businesses into a higher-level Corporate Partnership within the Sea Eagles,” adds Andrew.
“I set myself a goal of getting 50 businesses in the first year, and I’m proud to say we’ve had over 80 businesses involved so far. A number of them want to upgrade to an Official Sea Eagles Corporate Partnership for 2023.”
The group attracts a variety of trades (plumbers, electricians, builders), hospitality venues (restaurants, cafes, bottleshop), Real Estate industry, health and wellness businesses, and even a local driving school.
Aside from regular catch-ups in the Sea Eagles corporate box (during home games), the Club runs monthly social events all year round. Events have included an axe throwing night at Kiss My Axe in Brookvale and a fully-booked Sports Luncheon at Stella Blu, Dee Why, with members of the 2008 Grand Final team Anthony Watmough, David “Wolfman” Williams, and Mark Bryant.
An event is already planned for Melbourne Cup 2022 and the following businesses are bound to be there. Read on to meet your local Eagles Nest Business Members.

PEOPLE OF THE Beaches
People are everything.
They say you are the result of the ten closest people to you.
In business, life and relationships, it’s the people we meet, enjoy and hang out with that will ultimately shape us.
On the Beaches, we have such a talent of individuals. The collective collaboration of so many awesome people results in us having a friendly happy community that we treasure.
Why would you want to leave?
In the 2021 census in the Northern Beaches council area, the estimated resident population was 264,481, consisting of 48.9% male and 51.1% female and a median average age of 41 years old.
We have 72,448 families with an average of two children, living on the Beaches. It’s not surprising then, that since COVID, we also have 43,000 dogs living in a total of 105,017 private dwellings.
HERE ARE SOME OF THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE LIVING ON THE BEACHES SO SPECIAL.
James Griffin
What’s your happy place?
Running a 10-kilometre run around North Head or mucking about with my two young kids anywhere on our beautiful Beaches.
What is your favourite thing about the people within the Beaches community? The people of the Beaches are among the most generous in the world.
We are committed to making a difference in our local community, whether it be supporting people who are doing it tough, somewhere across NSW, or closer to home. We also support various causes such as the Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter or Community Northern Beaches. You can always count on the people of the Northern Beaches to donate their time, energy and passion to an important cause.
Describe what the Beaches’ vibe means to you and why you’re living amongst it?
The Northern Beaches is close to the city, but far enough away. You get the best of both worlds here. Manly in particular
is having an huge renaissance. The cultural, entertainment and dining scene right across Manly and stretching into Brookvale has rebounded and reset after COVID. There’s a real buzz, and I think there’s no looking back.
There is something for everyone here, for the young and old, newcomers and longtime residents. I love Manly because of its unique charms.
What’s your greatest value add to the fabric of the Beaches - aka business, career, volunteer, creative, celebrity? Well, the past five years have been a lot of blood, sweat and tears for me in representing and leading Manly as the State Member of Parliament and Minister for the Environment and Heritage.
I’ve got to say, I felt the burden of leading our community through the depths of COVID and personally took on the responsibility of trying to keep our businesses open and chart a brighter future post COVID. All that work is coming to fruition now whether it be amazing live music, like the ‘Night
At The Barracks’ multiple performance nights at North Head or a Sydney Dance Company performance—it’s a new sense of hope that exists across the community.
Your favourite Beach and why?
North Curl Curl is a particular favourite for the family, including the kids. You could be anywhere—and that’s the beauty of it!
Your favourite Sunday arvo hangout? I love hanging out a Little Manly Park with my kids watching the sunset over the city. It’s just a fantastic place to grab the end of the day.
What’s your go-to spot when you are showing out-of-towners the Beaches?
North Head for sure. It has the most unbelievable view and the walking trails are easy to get around. It’s only getting better due to a $3 million upgrade, all thanks to the NSW Government.
What is the best-kept secret in your local area?
The Cumberland, although it’s probably not that much of a secret anymore.•
JAMES GRIFFIN, MP MEMBER FOR MANLY NSW MINISTER FOR ENVIRONMENT AND HERITAGE // www.jamesgrifnmp.com
Beaches COVERED. // 27
James Griffin MP, Member for Manly and NSW Minister for Environment and Heritage, has been the voice of Northern Beaches residents since he was elected in 2017. A passionate advocate for his constituents, he has been serving them ever since.
Dr Sophie Scamps
Dr. Sophie Scamps has lived and worked on the Northern Beaches for 22 years. The newly-elected Member for Mackellar is excited about her new position in Parliament. Sophie sat down with Beaches COVERED. to discuss her love of the area, as well as her pledge to drive a community-backed independent voice to Parliament.
Hi Sophie. What is your favourite beach on the Northern Beaches? I live on the northern end of the Beaches, and I love them for different reasons.
Palm Beach is great for a morning surf, walking along Bilgola Beach is ideal every day, but my favourite is my local: Avalon Beach. The idyllic and tranquil lifestyle of the village and Avalon Beach are hard to beat.
Do you have any secret Spots? I love Angophora Reserve near Avalon. It’s a beautiful place to explore, with huge trees and Aboriginal artefacts. There’s a rock shelter and shell midden too. You feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere when you’re there.
Sunday arvo hangout destination? On a nice day, it’s fun to walk or jog along Palm Beach and then hit the surf at Kiddies Corner with the family. Bilgola Beach is also beautiful. It’s a local’s hangout and the coffee at Zubi’s is a must.
What does being a member of the local community mean to you? The Northern Beaches is a great place to live. The people are very friendly and supportive. I love how you run into people all the time, in the street or beach. During the election campaign, it was amazing how my supporters carried me with their energy and enthusiasm. I‘m so proud to represent the community I love in Parliament.
Politics aside, what is your value add to the community? I’m a volunteer race starter with Little Athletics in Narrabeen, and I enjoy seeing the kids
run. It extends my passion for running and makes me feel like I’m giving something back to the community.
Fun fact about Sophie Scamps? I was an Australian representative athlete in middle-distance running and qualified for the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona for the Women’s 800m event. I won gold in the 4x400m relay at the World Junior Championships in 1990 in Bulgaria. That will always stand out as one of my greatest personal achievements.
What is your mantra? Positive, Polite, Prepared. And then say thank you. We had so many great volunteers during the last Federal election campaign, and it was important that they, too, followed this approach. It almost became our informal Code of Conduct.
What’s the #1 priority to improve the Beaches area? The Wakehurst Parkway needs to be completed without question. It’s the main artery to the upper Northern Beaches and the Northern Beaches Hospital in Frenchs Forest. The completion of the widening of the Parkway can’t come soon enough. This stretch of road is vital to the safety of Mackellar residents and motorists using the Parkway every day to get to and from the rest of the city.
People – Our Theme for Spring, what does People mean to you? It was people power who helped create history, and it is the people of Mackellar that I now serve as MP. To all the volunteers and the people I met: thank you. I think people want to be heard again. The country has been run by career politicians for so long that it muddied the waters about what matters most to people. I can’t wait to listen to suggestions, beliefs and what the community needs so I can go and be their voice in Parliament. •
Josh van Raad
Josh van Raad, Dealer Principal of Col Crawford’s BMW, is an enthusiast who delights in all things automotive. If you want to explore the Beaches in a stylish, luxurious vehicle, Josh is the man to see.
What’s your happy place? It’s the time at home with my family that makes me happy.
What is your favourite thing about the people within the Beaches community? The Beaches is a friendly neighbourhood, where people say “Hey” and have a chat when you’re out walking the dog. It’s always nice.
What’s your greatest value add to the fabric of the Beaches? Running a local family-run business that services the needs of the local community and is committed to supporting local whenever possible.
What’s your go-to spot when you are showing out-of-towners the Beaches? There are so many fantastic locations that I couldn’t suggest only one. People watching in Manly, an early morning swim at Freshie Beach, lunch along the Strand at Dee Why, a walk around Long Reef Headland, a frozen margarita at Mexicano Restaurant, walking around the Narrabeen Lagoon, sailing on Pittwater and walking up to the Barrenjoey Lighthouse—to name just a few.
What is the best-kept secret in your local area? If there is one that is still a secret, I haven’t found it. •

Evan Minus
Across the Beaches, there’s one venue that has it all—incredible dining, entertainment and social options. Beaches COVERED spoke to Venue Manager Evan Minus to find out why everyone love coming up the Harbord Diggers.
How long have you lived on the Beaches? Apart from a few years overseas, I’ve live here my whole life.
What is your favourite thing about the people within the Beaches community? Northern Beaches people are generous and giving. We always give our time and effort to support local causes, whether it be through fundraising initiatives or community groups.
Describe what the Beaches vibe means to you and why you’re living amongst it? The Northern Beaches is unlike anywhere else in Sydney – relaxed, sun-soaked with a real community feel. I wouldn’t change it for anywhere else in the world. The centre of gravity in most people’s lives is the beach, and while the old “Insular Peninsula” tag might have a grain of truth to it, there’s a reason no one wants to leave! The quality of life we enjoy here is wonderful.
Your favourite Beach and why? Has to be Freshwater Beach – Home of Australian surfing and right on the front doorstep of my office.
Your favourite Sunday arvo hangout? A cold beverage with friends out on the Ocean Terrace, here at the Diggers.
What’s your go-to spot when you are showing out-of-towners the Beaches? Any of the walking trails up around North Head to Fairfax Lookout, or the Spit to Manly trail; two easily-accessible walks with world-class views.
What is the best-kept secret in your local area? All the wonderful new small-businesses popping up in Freshwater Village after some very tough COVID-affected years – great food at St. Alma, coffee at Room Two Ten, healthy bites from Freshwater Nutrition and a trim at Dukes Barber. Think local, act global! •

Simon & Anna Ainsworth
When it comes to love of gardening and plants, Simon and Anna Ainsworth are two like-minded souls. The green creators of Eden Gardens, Macquarie Park share their secrets with us on what makes a good gardener and lover of plants.
What sparked your passion for plants or were you born with green fingers? Simon: I was born with green fingers and spending time in the outdoors; always wondering how to grow every plant I saw. Anna: Meeting Simon and catching his passion to grow anything and everything in a greenhouse in his mother’s backyard.
What is your favourite thing about Springtime?Simon: Beautiful new green leaves. The renewal in nature where our world comes alive. Anna: I love those first buds on the cherry blossom trees, the Jacarandas and Wisteria. For my next Spring holiday, I want to do a motorbike tour to see the wildflowers of WA. I will have to take Simon as he is the rider with me as pillion.
Describe your dream garden? Anna: Flowers, flowers, everywhere—but I do love trees, and vistas drawing you further into the garden, hidden surprises and sculpture. Actually, the displays at Eden comes pretty close to my dream garden!
Where is your favourite outdoor space on the Beaches? Anna: North Head must be one of the most beautiful places in the world!
Australia is home to some spectacular flora. What are your favourite natives? Anna: The Flannel flower is my favourite of all flowers. I love the simple structure and velvet-like petals. It grows in rocky spaces overlooking the headland yet give it care, it will grow in a home garden. The waratah is fantastic and grevilleas of course. Then there is the wattle—glorious.
Most of us have been told that a house plant is ‘impossible to kill’ and then killed it. What plant would you recommend for a beginner? Indoor plants suffer from the effects of overwatering than anything else. Typically, the saucer is to blame. Most indoor plants, except for ferns, do not want to be sitting in water, and yet a saucer can often lead to just that.
The key is to pick a plant that suits you. If you relate to: “I’m a nurturing person”, go with a fern that loves attention and water or, “I’m happy just to look at it”, go for a Devils Ivy or Peace Lily. Our teams in both centres can help you with this. •

ENERGY Electric Bikes
There’s a whole new world of biking possibilities with electric bikes! Whether you want to go further and faster or just have fun, Energy Electric Bikes are here to help. Beaches COVERED. spoke to Owner West Ashton on what’s hot in eBikes.
Tell us about Energy Electric Bikes. Our eBikes start from $1700, giving customers a chance to get themselves an eBike without spending ridiculous amounts of money. We have entry level mountain eBikes, comfortable trekking bikes, fat tyre bikes and special cruising vintage style bikes.
There seems to be more and more eBikes around. Why do people love them so much? eBikes are a lot of fun and make all the hills effortless. With the increase of petrol prices, people are rethinking their daily commute. And of course the more eBikes that are out there, the more attention they get —they basically sell themselves.
How do you choose the right one?
The first thing we ask a customer is what their main purpose will be for their bike. We like to assess their ability and any injuries they may have that could make it harder to ride certain style bikes. We find out if they have some serious hills to get up and what their budget is.
Is service available at your shop?
Yes! We offer aftercare on all our eBikes. There is also a one-year warranty on all products. You even get a compliementary first service on your new eBike, valued at $120. Our location is great for any quick adjustments or if you need some air in your tyres.
Can you test ride a bike before you buy? Yes, you can. We have a great test track outside our Brookvale store as we want customers to try a few bikes before deciding on the right one for them.
What bike are you riding right now?
I’m riding an Earth T-Rex Mixie mid-drive with a massive 85nm of torque, capable of any hills.
Final words for traditional bike riders who may or may not make the switch
The eBikes can take you three times as far as a traditional bike. They are here to enhance your riding experience, making challenging hills easier and giving you the freedom to explore. •

Helle, John Olsen, & Phoebe the Dog.
How did you get into this business? We both worked for the previous owner of Collaroy Kitchen Centre. John was installing kitchens, and I was across all the aspects of administration and showroom. When we were given the opportunity to take over 18 years ago, we thought, “Why not?”
What did you want to be when you grew up?Helle: I wanted to be a fashion designer, then a hairdresser, but in the end, I became an administrator in the building industry.
John: I planned to become an engineer. But when I started an apprenticeship in fine furniture making, I found the high-end details so interesting, that I
At Collaroy Kitchen Centre, Helle and John Olsen design more than just kitchens. They infuse their passion for ‘Hygge”—the Danish concept of creating a cosy atmosphere into each kitchen they design, create and build.
stayed within the trades and never got to do that engineering education.
What is your favourite thing about the Northern Beaches? The lifestyle, the beaches, the walking tracks, and the abundance of good eateries.
Where do you like to spend your Sunday Arvo? We love spending time with our dog Phoebe, walking in the park and getting our hands dirty in the garden.
What trends are you seeing in kitchens at the moment? Curves, curves and more curves. Curves on joinery, curves on benchtops and curved doorways. Tiled splashbacks are making a comeback, and timber tops are also experiencing a surge in popularity. Porcelain benchtops continue to be used as much as stone.
Describe your perfect kitchen? The perfect kitchen is one that smells like home cooked food or freshly baked bread. It’s a kitchen where everything has its place and is not cluttering up the benchtop space. A kitchen should be a place to relax, entertain and make a mess but be easy to clean.
What is the craziest project you have ever worked on? It was a Darling Point job that I remember most vividly. The joinery and cabinets were extremely detailed, and the finished result was amazing. It contained a lot of natural stone, led lighting, floating cabinets, and all of the end and front panels were mitred so there was no visible start or finish in the timber veneer. It was challenging to make but in the end, the clients were astounded at the quality of worksmanship and loved it. •

What’s your Beaches happy place? I absolutely love Curl Curl Beach’s ocean pools—North or South Curly, it’s hard to choose.
What does the Beaches vibe mean to you? The Beaches offers a great place to make and build long-lasting friendships. It’s an idyllic location for families, where you can enjoy a diverse, multicultural community. And it’s a safe place to call home.
What’s your greatest value add to the fabric of the Beaches? I feel very proud to be able to offer locals specialised jewellery restorations and repairs of their family heirlooms along with handmade custom designed fine jewellery. I’m also a passionate advocate and fundraiser for the Northern Beaches Women’s shelter.
What’s your go-to spot when you are showing out-of-towners the Beaches? As a local business owner in Manly, I always head up to North Head Lookout. It has the best views of our wonderful harbour, and the nature walks are a pleasant surprise. •

Brookvale PAINT MAKERS
mixing it up!
Beaches COVERED. caught up with Colormaker Managing Director and Eco-Mastermind David Stuart, to get the low down on one of Brookvale’s most environmentally conscientious businesses.
David believes that we must act now if we are to change the future. The progress that his factory has made, in his view, should be standard practice. Colormaker is pushing a conversation about transitioning to renewables through their actions. Businesses Australia wide should take a large green leaf out of their eco-book.
There is urgency in his narrative. “People have been saying for 30 – 40 years now that we can’t go on polluting like this. We are at a tipping point. It is urgent. The time is now,” explained David.
“Australia’s First Nations people have had it right for millennia. If you look after Country, then Country will look after you,” said David.
“We are a local company and use local materials where possible,” explained David.
All Colormaker paints are premium quality and made right here on the Northern Beaches using 100% renewable energy and sustainable practices. Their array of high-end products are all researched, developed and manufactured out of their Brookvale laboratory and factory.
The changes that Colormaker has made, and continue to make, have already benefitted our atmosphere. Solar power,
battery storage and electric vehicles are all part of Colormaker’s goal of carbon neutrality by the end of 2024, now around 850 days away.
The factory and warehouse roofs are covered with solar panels, all working to harness energy from our generous sun. Since going Solar three years ago, Colormaker has saved over 431 tonnes of CO2 and cut their power bills by 83%. Projections for next year are 95%. Most people would say, “Well done,” David says, “How do we get to 100%?”
The introduction of an EV has been great for the business. It works environmentally and financially, saving thousands (90%+) in fuel costs. David has plans to expand the fleet of electric vehicles with a goal of making most Sydney metro deliveries clean and after that, working on inbound freight as well.
For continuous improvement, David is continually evaluating ways to improve Colormaker’s footprint. With new battery storage, Colormaker can now reverse the tide and send surplus energy back to the grid during peak times. He’s part of a group that’s looking at a community battery and wants to investigate ways that stored energy can be supplied to less fortunate members of the community.
“There needs to be a much bigger push on energy storage,” said David.
Other plans include introducing financial incentives for staff who elect to travel to and from work on foot or via bike, bus or car pool to reduce transport related emissions and load shifting, completing the heaviest duty work when the sun is shining.
Thank you, David and the Colormaker team, for decorating the way towards a cleaner future. •

Jill Healy-Quintard
Beaches COVERED.’s favourite health expert is currently travelling through Australia exploring this wondrous country we all call home. With her husband by her side, they have been exploring and meeting interesting and wonderful people—people with their own unique stories.
But who is the person behind the recipient of the inaugural Life Time Achievement Award with Fitness Australia? Here is Jill’s story.
I discovered my passion for dance, music, and performance early in life and that love has never left me. I was always getting into trouble as a child— I couldn’t sit still! The nuns at school told my mother I needed other activities to slow me down. My mother, who was a classical musician, put me into ballet. I had found my niche, my escape. I found movement—and I haven’t stopped.
Years later, I discovered health, fitness, and wellness. I’d been dancing in companies, running fashion shows, choreographing, and producing events, studying acting and singing with a newromantic style band, long before those became lifestyle choices. It all came from an innately holistic approach to life—a joy of living philosophy—that I’d had since childhood.
I love to write about health, fitness, and wellbeing. I especially enjoy writing articles for other publications like, Healthy Aging and Women’s Health & Wellbeing. I educate my Body & Balance clients with monthly newsletters and currently working on a second book — Open the Gate (or achieving a life of infinite possibilities). This book shares my lifelong passion for human movement, music, health, wellness, longevity and travel.
During COVID, I was able to stay positive and help the people around me. I continued to run classes virtually online, bringing out the best in people through my positive attitude and energy.
“We absolutely love Jill’s classes on ZOOM, and she exudes the same passion and energy as always,” says Freshwater residents, Katherine and Simon Nav.
Earlier this year, I was part of a Wise Women’s Gathering where I ran my TribalGROOVE Fusion classes and met with incredible indigenous women who initiated me into their tribe.
Over the years, I have been nominated for many Aerobic Championships and have been Top 3 in the Fitness Awards between 2019 and 2021. Following this success, I was awarded into the inaugural Lifetime Fitness Australia Membership because of my innovative fitness and wellness philosophy. In that year, I also judged in several categories of the AUSactive Fitness Awards and will be again in 2023.
I have been involved in fitness and wellness for 40 years, helping and inspiring thousands of men, women, and children to reach their health, wellness, and fitness goals. I have also specialised in teaching children with disabilities through my Yoga Nidra meditation, which improves mind-body balance, lessens stress, and improves productivity.
It’s been exciting to offer classes and seminars in Australia and around the world, including my classes in Pilates, YogaPilates Fusion®, Restorative Pilates, Yoga Nidra BodyBarre®, STUDIO Pilates, TribalGROOVE Fusion, Keeping Your Working Body and Mind Fit in the Corporate world (a seminar series), Women Beyond 50 MindBodyBalance (for women 40-plus), Exercises for Face, Mind and Body (non-surgical facelift) from the comfort of your home or attend a local studio class with Carola and Tamara.
In 2019, I published my first book, YogaPilates Fusion: A Mind Body and Balanced Practice. It details the ten principles I’ve developed to ensure there
is complete balance of exercise and mind-body techniques in every group or private session.
In addition to the AUSactive Awards, I have received recognitions, for my work in the Australian Fitness Network Awards for my positive influence on a fit and well lifestyle, as well as at the Women’s Economic Forum in New Delhi, India, in May 2017 for Innovation for Health and Wellness.
My vision is to share my knowledge and discover more human movement. I wish to help bring the best out in all teaching, wherever they are in the world, through ZOOM link.
As a thoughtful leader, I am a pro-ager instead of an anti-ager. My wish is for all people to continue to look forward to healthy, fit lives free of dependence on medication. I share this through the knowledge I have gained as a daughter, a wife, a mother, a teacher and as a health and wellness professional. This has provided me with an honest and joyful passion and genuine love of people in all that I do.
I’m committed to growing and learning as both a participant and a leader. I want to continue writing, traveling, creating and leading trainings, workshops and retreats for people seeking their passion, mission, or tribe. I believe that everyone has the ability to shine in their own light.
Jill is waiting to connect with you, to explore your own personal health and wellness desires. •

What is your favourite thing about the people within the Beaches community? I love the diversity of our healthy happy community
Describe what the Beaches vibe means to you and why you’re living amongst it? I’m living my best life; we’re so close to nature with great restaurants and the best coffee.
What’s your greatest value add to the fabric of the Beaches? Working for Upstate is a privilege. The team make me feel valued, which is one of the best aspects of my career. By looking after the property entrusted to us, we can provide a service to our community by selling property, managing it, or leasing it out. We’re also helping property owners make the most of their biggest asset — their home.
Your favourite Beach and why? My favourites are Turimetta and Bilgola, as they are quite secluded and give me a chance to relax.
Your favourite Sunday arvo hangout? Any of the Boathouse Group’s restaurants – they serve a divine margarita and their food is truly exquisite. What more could a girl want?
What’s your go-to spot when you are showing out-oftowners the Beaches? It’s tough to beat the Pasadena at Church Point for lunch. It has prime water frontage and you can even stay there.
What is the best-kept secret in your local area? A coffee and muffin at Eleven 11 in Warriewood. Also watching the sunset from the jetty at Newport with a bottle of wine. •

Britt Collinson
Britt Collinson, creator of the beloved children’s Britt Bear, was born in England and moved to the Northern Beaches when she was twelve years old. Making her home on the Beaches, Britt has been involved in many creative endeavours that brings joy to the community.
How long have you lived on the Beaches? I’ve lived in Australia since I was twelve years old. I moved here from the United Kingdom.
What’s your happy place? I love taking the cliff walk from Queenscliff and Curl Curl.
What is your favourite thing about the people within the Beaches community? Having my son, Winter, has opened my world to many new friends. The community of parents at his school is like an extended family. Everyone is very supportive and brings so much love and fun into my life.
Describe what the Beaches vibe means to you and why you’re living amongst it? The Beaches is a great place to live. I love how the neighbourhood comes together when it storms. I especially love the nooks of Brookvale and all the family-friendly, relaxed bars and cool cafes popping up—not to mention cool music venues and creative spaces.
What’s your greatest value add to the fabric of the Beaches - aka business, career, volunteer, creative, celebrity? I have many interests. Many people know me as the creator of the Britt Bear, a cuddly teddy bear that started out as a fun creation when I was young. Taking it to local markets, it became a fan favourite for many parents. It evolved and now sells in many retail outlets, bringing joy to children everywhere. Children love my bears so much that they can’t ‘bear’ to go anywhere without them! I donate and raise funds for Bear Cottage in Manly from Britt Bear. It’s a hospice that provides end-of-life care for children with life-limiting conditions and their families. I also run two fashion stores that sell stylish designer and brand clothes at affordable prices.
Your favourite Beach and why? I love to visit Dee Why Beach when a storm hits—I love watching the massive waves.
What’s your go-to spot when you are showing out-of-towners the Beaches? Clontarf is a great spot to hire a boat and tour the waterways around the area. •

Penny Barron
Penny Barron is a skilled health practitioner. As a resident at Harbord Homeopathic Clinic in Brookvale, she brings a positive approach to her work with families facing health-related issues. Beaches COVERED. spoke with Penny about what inspires her working in the natural world of alternative medicine.
How long have you lived on the Beaches? I’ve lived on the Beaches since 2005, when we first bought our family home at Beacon Hill.
What’s your Beaches’ happy place? There’s nothing like soaking up the sunshine at Freshie Beach with a takeaway lunch from The Little Café.
What does the Beaches’ vibe mean to you? It’s that feeling you get when you’re driving down Warringah Road on the way to Dee Why and all of a sudden, you can see the ocean spread out in front of you. You get a little thrill of awesomeness for how good it is to be living in such a great area.
What’s your favourite Beach and your Sunday arvo hangout? A walk along Curly Beach to Manly Beach is always a treat, but it’s made better with a yummy lunch at one of cafés along the way.
What’s your go-to spot when you are showing out-of-towners the Beaches? Definitely Manly if they’re coming from out of town—but maybe a little trip to Turimetta beach. It’s truly so beautiful.
Why did you become a Homeopath? When I began my studies in naturopathy, I had never heard of homeopathy until we began studying it. Other naturopathy students were complaining about having to learn it, but after five minutes in the first class, I knew it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. It is the only modality that reaches in so deep and that sees the immune system active not just on the physical level, but on the emotional and mental levels as well.
Who do you love treating the most? Those who want to grow and who sees their symptoms as a window into their psyche. Those who understand that true healing comes through self-understanding will find a greater sense of wellness.
What’s the biggest question you ask a patient? The biggest question for many people who are suffering from chronic symptoms is, “What was happening to you at the time your symptoms started?” This can be a really important question to remember back to, as it often provides insight into what triggered the suffering and how it manifested into symptoms.
How did The Aurum Project start? I was working with fellow Practitioner, Linlee Jordan, and we had a conversation about the lack of quality research in homeopathy. She spoke to me about her dream to start a research charity, and I absolutely loved the idea. It became a dream for me as well.
You teach at Nature Care College. What do you love about teaching Homeopathy? The best thing about teaching homeopathy is that I get to talk about my favourite subject for hours on end without getting bored. I also learn something new along with my students; I’ve probably learned more from them than they’ve learned from me. Homeopathy is one of those subjects where you could spend entire lifetimes back to back and still not learn it all.
Why do so many people misunderstand homeopathy when there’s now so much research to support its validity? There are many reasons for this, ranging from being closed to new ways of thinking to being very stuck in the mainstream medical paradigm. But I think homeopathy and the mainstream will eventually learn to exist happily side by side once greater acceptance is reached. And that is only through time and further research. In India, the Ministry of Ayush is including homeopathy, Ayurvedic medicine and yoga alongside conventional medicine in hospitals. You can only imagine what that would be like.
Once you experience homeopathy for yourself, you’ll realise there’s so much more to it than you ever imagined. •

Jessica Watts
Here on the Beaches, we are so fortunate to be surrounded by a plethora of creative minds; none more than the charismatic, witty and oh-so-talented Jessica Watts. This seriously cool chick has magical powers when armed with a paintbrush, and Beaches COVERED. is beyond excited to feature her on our cover this season. We caught up with Jess and her dog, Kevin, in her beautiful studio in Brookvale.
Hi Jessica. How would you describe your work? Joyful, maximalist. I use a distinct collage style to fuse depictions of the female figure with vibrant flowers, botanical wallpaper designs and scenes from nature.
What led you to become the artist you are today? My past is littered with creative pursuits: finger painter, fuzzy-felter, highly imaginative teenage liar, 3am interpretive dancer, Visual Communication graduate, finicky graphic designer and excitable New York art director. You can see the evidence of this past in my paintings. When I worked in advertising, I collected loads of printed ephemera and other paraphernalia (rubber stamps,
wallpaper, old typography manuals) all of which continue to appear in my work.
Who are your creative heroes and how have they influenced you?
I am obsessed with Candy Jernigan, a little-remembered New York collage artist. She used found and discarded objects to document her life. Her art is charming and thought-provoking. Although my work is stylistically very different, I am always inspired by her insight and creative spirit.
Cool and slow like Jack Johnson or frantic and impulsive like Mozart; how would you describe your creative process? Yeah, not cool. Sometimes slow, particularly before coffee. I think
I’d describe my process as layered and time-consuming. There are so many steps to create these paintings. From precise sketches to building panels, to laying down wallpaper or sanding timber veneer, to tonal underpainting, to the broad-stroked impasto application of oil and intricate inky tattoos and rubber-stamped words. Oh, and I’d definitely describe it as messy. Lids never find their way back on the tube and by the end of the day, there is usually paint smeared across my fingers and face. It’s very fetching.
Your Wallflower series is empowering. It makes me want to cuddle a bunch of flowers. What were you hoping the paintings would evoke? Yes, exactly
36 // ARTIST’S TRAIL
COVER ARTIST
PHOTOGRAPHY: HELEN COETZEE ELE Y O
E
that: empowerment. It’s about being self-possessed, immersed in beauty and connected to nature - I’d like the viewer to imagine themselves as the heroes of these painted worlds.
Your considered use of colour really creates a mood within your paintings, like a secret language you use to communicate. Have you always loved vibrant colours? I’m preoccupied by colour, particularly how colours respond to each other depending on how they are placed together. Most of the problem solving that happens in a painting for me is about getting the colour right.
The Northern Beaches have an incredible creative scene. What is it like to be a part of it? Working as an artist can be solitary so it’s really important to gather a strong community of like-minds around you. I work upstairs in a fabulous building called The House of Art next door to Officeworks in Dee Why. It’s home to artists and photographers and designers, so I can take breaks and be social and have a sticky-beak at what others are doing. The Northern Beaches is home to so many talented artists. We all know each other, and we tip each other into opportunities. It’s a very happy club to be a part of.
People are desperate to get their hands on one of your paintings. What is next for you? Yikes! I suppose I better keep those desperate people happy and make more paintings.
The girl crush is now official. Thanks Jess! Can’t wait to see what you have for us in the future. •

Pop Bright COLOURS
Hi Monique, where did you grow up, and has this influenced your artistic style? I grew up on the Central Coast of NSW in the 70’s and 80’s which was very laid back back then. Moving to Sydney to attend Sydney College of the Arts, I felt like a fish out of water, I was a very naive 18 year old. I think living in New York for almost a decade after Art School definitely opened my eyes and influenced my artistic style and my approach to art making. At the start, I wasn’t allowed to work in the US, so I spent a lot of my time learning art techniques, visiting galleries and making art, both good and really awful. I experimented A LOT! I was immersed in one of the most vibrant cities in the world where inspiration and influence was around every corner and it was an amazing time!
Tell us a little about your style; how would you describe it? I work primarily in acrylic paint on canvas or board. I tend to lean towards bold colours mixed with pops of unusual or unexpected colours. My style is sometimes referred to as a “cutout” style or “hard edge” painting, where all the colours are painted without
blending into the colour next to it. My work explores tone and colour, usually drawing inspiration from my own photographs.
Did you study Art at school or are you self-taught? Art was my favourite subject in high school. I spent many a lunchtime in the art rooms drinking black instant coffee, eating avocados drawing and painting on anything I could get my hands on. Later on, I received my Bachelor of Visual Arts (BVA) degree from Sydney University - Sydney College of the Arts. After moving to NYC, I also participated in Summer Residencies at both New York Academy of Art (NYAA) and the School of Visual Arts (SVA).
@helenbeardart @guy_yanai @esergundz and @fabian_treiber. They are a fun and colourful bunch that inspire me.
On a Sunday, I’d prefer to be…? Lying on a hammock reading a book with a coffee from one of my local Collaroy cafes. I’m all about lazy Sundays.
What do you want people to feel when they look at your work? Probably a sense of nostalgia or familiarity. A place they have been, seen somewhere or want to travel to. I guess my paintings are an escape from everyday life, even if only for a second.
I like to create vibrant, happy pieces.
Top tips for young starting out artists?
What’s your happy place?
I absolutely love my painting studio. I could spend days on end in there with all the windows open and the music playing really loudly! I also really love travelling; it is definitely the number one inspiration behind my paintings.
Who are your top 3 followings on Instagram? I don’t think I can stop at 3! The top 6 on my list right now are @celestebarber @ashleylonshoreart
Constantly experiment to find your style, something that you are going to continue for a long while; something you will be recognised by if someone sees your work. It took me a long time to find my style and now I have been painting this way for 15 years. Also for me, organisation and planning is also key. Keep in mind that there are a lot of things happening behind the scenes - website, bookkeeping, social mediawhich all take time away from painting. I wouldn’t change it for the world though because it’s definitely my dream job! •

NATURE
Leah Ramage is a self-taught watercolour artist whose work is largely influenced by the coastal surroundings she grew up in on the Northern Beaches.
Her love for the ocean and the wider natural world is reflected in her commitment to educating audiences about sustainability and consumerism through art.
“My work is about purpose and giving back to the community,” says Leah. “I donate five percent of the sale of my paintings to the Seabin Project, which collects trash, oil, fuel and detergents from the world’s ocean.”
Through her art, Leah blends design with education, highlighting the simple beauty of nature and the ocean while also educating people on animal and environmental sustainability.
From the outset, Leah knew that “painting pretty pictures” was never enough—she wanted her artwork to influence its viewers to cause them to see nature as something more valuable than a commodity.
Her collections have become less about consumerism and more about awareness. It’s more about spending time in nature without harming it.
“I want to make a positive difference in the world,” says Leah. “I want to make it a bright future for all of us, as well as nature and the environment.”
Leah also takes commission works and sells prints of her watercolours. You can find her down at the Manly Markets most weekends or visit her online store.
Leah has taken her art to many locales around the Northern Beaches. Her works have been featured in several local cafés, the Outfall Art Collective and in her own gallery space in Newport – Leah’s Mark.
Leah’s distinctive style, coupled with her creative energy and attention to detail, has made her a much-loved local artist. Her paintings’ universal appeal has seen them travel the world, captivating collectors everywhere. •

Ash Holmes
40 // ARTIST’S TRAIL
If you’re looking for Northern Beaches artist Ash Holmes, you’ll mostly find her listening to music and composing stunning masterpieces in her Brookvale studio. Drawing on inspiration from her local environment, it’s no surprise this painter’s eye-catching canvases hang in homes and galleries all over the world.
As a fourth generation of female artists, creativity runs deep in the blood of young Curl Curl artist, Ash Holmes.
“Being creative was always supported within my family,” she says. “I loved playing the guitar when I was younger. I connected with drawing in my early years at school.”
Having grown up on the Northern Beaches, it’s easy to see how the local landscape has become Ash’s muse.
“I grew up on Guringai Land, Curl Curl, and I’d say it’s impacted my process, being close to natural materials and curvaceous shapes in the natural landscape. I enjoy painting with a grounded colour palette and textures that relate to nature.”
All of Ash’s paintings, often largescale canvases with acrylic paint, are captivating and calm with a feminine force. Many depict a gentle flow of movement and colour and tap into the harmonious tones of her environment.
“I want people to interpret (my art) uniquely based on their own individual experience,” she says. “When I’m painting, I feel a sense of joy, peace, and relief so I wish for those emotions to be projected onto the piece.”
COLOUR MAGIC
Beyond the brush, Ash uses her research in colour psychology to give her works a sensory effect.
“Each artwork will project a different experience for the viewer. It can potentially alter their mood depending on the colour psychology of the piece,” she explains.
With sell-out exhibitions across Sydney, Byron Bay, and Marbella, Ash’s pieces are also held in private collections in Australia, New Zealand, US, Denmark, Canada, Singapore, Dubai, Germany, Hong Kong, West Africa, France, Japan, China, and Spain.
She was a finalist in the Combat Prize and Mosman Art Prize, and in 2021, Ash was chosen as the resident artist for the Harbord Hotel in Freshwater. Probably even more impressive is the fact that she is self-taught.
“Ever since I was young, I’ve been a hands-on learner,” says Ash. “Being able to physically create my vision is something that goes hand in hand with my personality. Taking a thought and turning it into something you can view comes naturally! I act quite intuitively in my life when making decisions, and I feel that is how the process of my work goes, too.”
It’s no surprise Ash is happiest when she’s creating and painting in her Brookvale studio.
“My happy place really is a day in my studio painting,” she smiles. “Reading, listening to music, and pottering around my studio. Working towards a body of work is fulfilling, meditative, and fills up my cup. I feel energised and clear-minded when I’ve had a day to myself painting and doing these small rituals in my studio.”
If you’re an aspiring young artist looking for advice from one of the best, Ash says, “Keep pushing yourself into new avenues that feel out of your comfort zone and enjoy the journey each step of the way.” •

HAKE, House Of Art.
Welcome to Hake, House of Art, a multidisciplinary creative space where art comes to life, breathing into our Northern Beaches community. The curators at Hake strive to exhibit the best and brightest local artists, bringing these artists out of their studios and into the public eye.
Located in Brookvale on Guringai land, the gallery was created as a space to foster creativity and host regular art exhibitions from both established and emerging artists, as well as the invitation of independent projects.
Committed to creating an environment that allows artists to grow and flourish in their craft, curators, Ash Holmes and Jake Elliott believe that art is meant to be shared, not hidden away in a studio.
“We believe that there is no greater feeling than seeing the work of your favourite artist on display in a gallery,“ says Ash. “Both Jake and I are making it our mission to bring these experiences to as many people as possible.”
Hake is a modern and minimalistic art gallery and private events venue that houses an array of original and oneof-a-kind artworks.
The exhibition space is a light-filled room that allows for natural light to flood in and create an atmosphere that reflects the works on display.
HAKE works with artists who feel a sense of connection to their
surroundings, an appreciation for nature, and understand, the importance of working on Indigenous land.
“We want our artists to feel supported when taking risks with their original artworks and allowing HAKE to be the vessel for their work to be held.
Hake’s in-house residences also offer an array of services, including art consulting, stretching and framing canvas, as well as photography and videography. • :

A rare artist
Jaimee Paul’s life revolves around two things: art and animals.
She creates work from her studio, Our Place, where her ‘Art For Purpose’ takes on a life of its own—from lions to rhinoceroses, koalas to kangaroos, right down to even the smallest honeybee.
Jaimee’s paintings of wildlife are a rare and precious gift. Each exquisite piece captures the spirit and personality of the animal it represents, down to the very whiskers and curves of the tail.
Inspired by her own childhood experiences, she is drawn to the unique personalities of animals. “Animals have such personality. Everyone is so different and complex, and I try to uncover their spirit in my paintings,” explains Jaimee.
“Animals have a certain place, a voice in our lives, and I hope that my art evokes emotions from audiences not usually partial to staring inside the eyes and soul of a furry being.”
Jaimee’s work is sensitive and uncanny, resembling her subjects in a way that seems direct and familiar. Traveling with and observing animals inspires her work; she believes that “whatever the world needs at the time,” she paints it.
Since 2004, Jaimee has called Brookvale her creative home. She is a co-founder of the Brookvale Arts District and La Crème Creative Inc, founder of NinetyFive Percent—an Art for Oceans charity exhibition, and founding member of artist-run, Sydney Road Gallery in Seaforth.
In addition to creating paintings for exhibitions, Jaimee also creates commissioned artworks and pet portraits for her clients, as well as teaching art classes on the side. •

His art appears on everything from T-shirts to billboards, and now a whale tail sculpture for Whale Tales, an expansive open-air art trail spanning Sydney’s Western Harbour from Barangaroo to the Sydney Fish Markets.
Mulga’s artwork, which features fish with moustaches and other humorous touches, can be viewed outside the Aquarium at Darling Harbour. “My art has an element of Aussie larrikinism and humour, which is a pretty unique thing,” says Mulga.
Mulga’s designs are inspired by the beach and surfing and bring a world of tropical bearded men, tiger-wearing diamond sunglasses, and gorilla-ruling planets to life.
Mulga has had a varied and exciting career, exhibiting in over 60 art shows and publishing two books. He has painted thousands of artworks, won multiple awards, worked with big brands such as Samsung, Coca Cola, Red Bull and Microsoft, and so many more.

YOUR HEALTH OUR PROMISE
On Sunday 21st August, Mounties Care and the Harbord Diggers officially opened their doors to their Integrative Health Clinic Freshwater.
Mounties Care Integrative Health Clinic Freshwater takes a holistic approach to your health, focused on achieving total wellness through a combination of GPs, integrative doctors and complementary practitioners. The state-of-the-art health clinic brings revolutionary holistic health to the Northern Beaches.
Specialising in chronic and difficult to treat conditions, the clinic treats all conditions; where patients come for the active listening they receive and the deep diagnosis we provide by working collaboratively to assess all aspects of their life.
While the concept of Integrative Medicine is not new, leading the way in this sector is a group of practitioners who are passionate about creating a new kind of medicine.
Dr Penny Caldicott, President of the Australasian Integrative Medicine Association (AIMA), along with her team are excited to push the boundaries
in shaping the role of a traditional doctor to focus rather on holistic health and well-being.
Mounties Care Integrative Health Clinic offers traditional GP specialist services for commonly occurring health issues, as well as tackling uncommon and chronic diseases.
With a clear focus on preventative medicine, they provide additional integrative lifestyle health approaches for more complex health problems.
This model has demonstrated exceptional results in areas such anxiety, depression, digestive problems, insomnia, allergies, diabetes, and other chronic and inflammatory conditions.

A PARTNERSHIP THAT SERVES THE COMMUNITY
Mounties Group is continuing its strong partnership with leading aeromedical provider CareFlight this year, cementing the Group’s commitment to one of the biggest sponsorship support packages known in Club history.

The Mounties Care CareFlight Helicopter has undertaken 355 critical care patient rescue missions since its launch in July 2021.
Ts.Howe r h t bG ey op
Thanks to the Mounties Care sponsorship, CareFlight was able to launch its brand-new Airbus H145, part of the next generation of NSW’s Aeromedical Helicopters in 2021.
The Mounties Care CareFlight Helicopter rapid response service is based on the grounds of Westmead Hospital. Utilising the H145, one of the world’s most advanced aeromedical helicopters, the service can be airborne and on its way to trauma incidents within three minutes of being called. This means that severely ill or injured patients receive hospital level care as quickly as possible.
CareFlight is an Australian institution that saves people’s lives. The results from the partnership have meant that services from the Mounties Care CareFlight helicopter are available to provide emergency healthcare to community members in need, quickly and efficiently.
This partnership strengthens Mounties Group’s ethos of ‘improving the lives of our members and our community’ and that is something our members and guests should be proud to contribute to through this partnership.
Mounties Group have enjoyed a rich eleven-year history with the CareFlight team, previously supporting them
through community donations and ClubGRANTs. However, just a year into the new partnership, they are excited at the opportunities that lie ahead and to hear more stories from the CareFlight team about lives saved thanks to this service.

Member Services Team
What do you do outside the club? I just completed my Bachelor’s Degree in Primary Education and play Softball, which I’ve been playing since I was five years old.
How long have you been working at Harbord Diggers? Almost 4 years.
What’s your Beaches’ happy place and why? It’s all things in Freshwater to Manly. I enjoy the coastal walks, gym, bars and restaurants. There’s so much variety—I wouldn’t live anywhere else.
What does the Beaches’ vibe mean to you? It means time moves just a little bit slower. Activities are done at a leisurely pace, and I love the boardwalk at Curly. You can always strike up a friendly conversation with strangers. Between the calming smell of the sea, the weather and endless activities, I find that this vibe right for me.
What strengths and values do you bring to the Diggers? I bring a number of strengths to the Diggers. These include the simple ones like displaying kindness to all patrons and other staff that come into the Diggers. I’m also considerate, able to communicate well, multi-task, and manage customer relations quite highly as well. I believe all these strengths have been developed through my life experiences – at work and in my sporting and professional life.
What’s your go-to spot when you are showing out-of-towners the Beaches? The coastal drive from Dee Why to Manly. I love seeing visitors’ reactions when they see our beautiful beaches and the many great bars and restaurants we have here.
CHELSEA MANN

What do you do outside the club? I play elite level netball with the NSW Swifts and completing a Bachelor of High Performance Sport at University.
How long have you been working at Harbord Diggers? I have been working at Harbord Diggers for two years.
What’s your Beaches’ happy place and why? I have many favourite places on the Northern Beaches. One of my favourites would be Freshwater. I love the beach, the sushi and the ocean promenade all which Freshie has to offer.
What does the Beaches’ Vibe mean to you? A hot sunny day out at the beach with family and friends; a day filled with fun and games including snorkelling, beach cricket, surfing and eating the hot chips before the seagulls get to them.
What strengths and values do you bring to the Diggers? I am proud of my dedication, commitment and reliability. I enjoy hard work and challenges, and I do my best in any task or environment. I am passionate about my job and my career path within it. As a team member, I am excited to create positive culture at Diggers and build strong connections with all staff members and customers.
What’s your go-to spot when you are showing out-of-towners the Beaches? To get the real feel of living on a beach, I would take them to Palm Beach and walk them up to the Lighthouse. It’s a memorable experience that always draw people back to this special place.
PAMELA HANSEN
How long have you been a part of the Harbord Diggers community? I have been an active member of the Diggers for 25 years.
What’s your Beaches' happy place and why? Going down to the Curl Curl boardwalk, sitting on the rocks near the surf club and watching the waves. It's very calming.
What does the Beaches’ vibe mean to you? It’s a lifestyle, a close-knit community where everyone knows each other and makes you feel like you are part of something bigger.
What strengths and values do you bring to the Diggers? I support local veterans and their families as well as help oversee the running of the Harbord Diggers Garden Club. The club is supported by Harbord Diggers and Mounties Group for over 30 years, and has been building friendships through gardening for 15 years. I help organise community events like the ANZAC Day commemoration service, which I’ve been part of for 15 years now. I also assist with providing support for past and present serving veterans, as well as their families.
What’s your go-to spot when you are showing out-of-towners the Beaches? Go for a drive up to the peninsula with some iconic pit stops along the way. We always come back to Harbord Diggers, to our beautiful ocean terrace, for a drink, meal, and a laugh. •

Zing Fresh has found its space! The new warehouse in Brookvale’s creative epicentre is as creatively inspiring as it is inspired. Zing is now throwing their hat in the ring, alongside other industry heavyweights, to serve you a distinct and delicious menu of event opportunities. Beaches COVERED. sat down with creator Jennifer Jones to find out more about how this new space is a home away from home for Zing Fresh.
The new Zing HQ has a style savvy menu, reflecting the diversity of education and events. A lot about the new space plays on the word wild, as Zing Fresh is all about celebrating nature, running the gauntlet with combining food and experiences which take you to the wilder side of typical.
Adventure to one of Zing’s Mystery Dinners, where each course is a surprise. Or taste your way through their Tasting Nights so you can experience what all the fuss is about. And book your event catering with confidence.
“In 2023, we are venturing out of the warehouse to a secret spot on the stunning Northern Beaches for a unique dining experience.
“This large-scale public adventure, supported by the Northern Beaches Council, will serve an impressive feast for both the eyes and tastebuds with sophisticated, cultivated styling and beautifully curated food,“ says Jennifer.
You can also experience the wild side at Zing’s ‘Ware B&B’. This is warehouse hire as an event venue, with or without catering, for your daytime or evening functions. The large open floor plan filled with natural light makes
it an exceptional space for meetings, conferences, product launches, photoshoots, exhibitions, Zing’s interactive workshops, luncheons, dinner parties and public or private events.
Creativity and sustainable thinking will be encouraged at Zing as well. Paint, sip and bite classes will be held along with ‘What to Wear at the Warehouse’ days where you can trade/sell/buy pre-loved clothing. There’s even a ‘Do away with throw away’ classes about composting and upcycling.
Zing Fresh has expanded beyond their core event catering business to offer a range of ‘Wild Warehouse Workshops’ for public or private groups. You can learn how to host a party like a pro with Bespoke Beverages, Native Bush Food, Contemporary Canapés, Delicious Dining and Amazing Grazing classes.
Cooking and sustainability go hand in hand, which is why Zing Fresh has partnered with local businesses such as Momma Kombucha, Seadrift Distillery and Manly Microgreens to offer a unique dining experience that highlights the importance of conscious cooking.
Zing’s cooking classes for kids are not just fun and games. These classes are
designed to build intuitive confidence in children so they can be more comfortable in their own workspace and inspire a new generation of budding chefs.
“In our kids’ Picasso class, we encourage creativity in the kitchen by cultivating a positive connection with food through free thinking and artistic expression,” explains Jennifer.
Ultimately, Jennifer happily says, “Mi casa su casa” or “Make yourself at home” in Spanish. She welcomes you to the new warehouse HQ and invites you to enjoy the space however you see fit.
It’s perfectly inviting for long lunches, extended tables, and private dining experiences. Soak up the tastefully luxe, industrial yet intimate vibe; create your own sense of style and space without the hassle of hosting from home.

FRESH AT THE GROWERS Fruit & Veg
Spring is the perfect time to stock up on fresh produce—so we can stay looking and feeling happy. If you’re looking to keep your diet varied and healthy this Spring, don’t forget to head down to Harbord Growers in Balgowlah.
BANANAS
Bananas are the sweetest fruit you can eat. They’re packed with potassium, Vitamins A and C, fibre, and even iron.
If you’re having trouble sleeping, try eating a banana before bed. The magnesium within can help you relax and fall asleep faster. They’re one of nature’s most perfect foods: nutritious and delicious on their own or mixed with other ingredients!
CHILLIES
BLUEBERRIES
Blueberries are so delicious, you could eat them all day. And, they’re great to add to your diet if you’re looking to get more antioxidants. Blueberries have a long list of health benefits and are widely regarded as one of the healthiest fruits on the planet. Blueberries are so versatile— they go great in pancakes, muffins, smoothies, and even homemade ice cream.
People around the world use chilli peppers to spice up their food. From mild bell peppers to super-spicy habaneros, there are many different varieties of chilli peppers. Carolina Reapers is one of the hottest peppers known to man - holding the Guinness World Record crown from 2012 until 2022. Some people like their food very spicy, but others prefer less heat. Removing the seeds and membranes from inside the chilli will make your meal less spicy. For even more variety, try mixing together multiple different kinds of chilli peppers for a unique avour sensation.
PINEAPPLE
Pineapples are a great way to keep your energy up when you’re feeling low, so load up on this sweet, tangy fruit. This tropical fruit is rich in bromelain, an enzyme that helps break down protein in the body, making it ideal for post-workout meals. Try pairing it with chicken or seafood for a delicious meal that will keep you going all day long.
CUCUMBER
Cucumbers have been around since Ancient Egypt, and they’re still going strong! Today you can eat cucumber slices, drink cucumber juice, and put cucumber masks on your face to reduce wrinkles and clear up acne. Cucumbers are a crunchy and mild-tasting fruit that makes a great addition to salads or your Springtime Cucumber Gin and Tonic.
SPRING ONIONS
Spring onions are the first green vegetables to emerge from the soil in springtime and make a wonderful addition to any meal. They have a mild flavour, but enough bite to be interesting. Spring onions are versatile. They can be used in almost any dish: from burgers, to sandwiches and crudités platters to grilled meats, even Springtime soups too.
Carotenoids in spring onions aid healthy vision, lower blood sugar levels and aid digestion too. •

Casa Locale - The Local House North Manly
For lovers of coastal living
Melita Bruvelis and Jess Crapis are the creative minds behind Casa Locale - The Local House. Lauren Goldsack from Beaches COVERED. sat down with these two designer extraordinaires to share how they got started, what inspires them and how to make a home sing.
What was the passion behind opening your store?
Casa Locale was born from our joint love of interiors. We both come from design, retail and customer service backgrounds and have worked together for seven years as brand (Mayvn Interiors) and wholesale agent (Home Design & Co). For us, creating something together was a natural progression after navigating and trying to survive the lows of COVID and devastating storm damage in March.

CASA LOCALE IS AN ITALIAN NAME THAT MEANS “THE LOCAL HOUSE.”
Relaxed coastal cool is your vibe. What materials and colours do you use to create this?
Anything and everything natural and textural, but we do appreciate the use of Teflon-standard polyester in the right scenario – dogs, kids, husbands…
We have every colour in our wheelhouse, reflecting the coast and the Northern Beaches; every shade of neutral to blues through greens. Greens are definitely having a hero moment right now. For a more contemporary coastal feel, rusts, tans and blacks with a neutral base are heavenly.
The Northern Beaches is a mecca for locally crafted homewares. How do you support local? We love to support local and discover new local brands and suppliers.
Casa Locale translates to The Local House in Italian, which is Jess’s heritage and a healthy obsession of Melita’s since high school.
Some of our favs are Byrne and Love candles, Erin Masters Photography, The Pot Warehouse, Piega Window Furnishings, artist Judy Salleh and Mayvn Interiors Furniture. Well, Mayvn is the creation of one of our founders, so we have to say that! We love being surrounded by so much creativity. They all have such a great eye for their craft.
Bunnings’ colour wall is a minefield. Choosing the right paint colour is an overwhelming process. Don’t get me started on cushions! What services do you provide to help clients shape their homes?
This is where we are most, at home! We are here to help our customers with all the big and small design decisions.
To make the process easier for customers, we have a gorgeous retail offering of furniture, soft furnishings, lighting, rugs, home décor, artwork and body and bath products.
Our Dream house... Timeless, relaxed, full of texture and collected treasures with endless sunny spots to hang out with family and mates.
We are also working on a range of cool hampers for easy gifts. ‘Coffee Lover’, ‘Cocktail Lover’, ‘Cheese Lover’ and ‘Welcome to the Beaches’ are the themes we are currently working on.
We offer everything from one-off furniture and artwork sourcing to custom upholstery.
For starters, we have over 65 sofa designs to choose from that are made to order in Australia with a 10-year structural guarantee.
Our styling service is for clients who just need the finishing touches. With our Book a Design Consultation service, we’re by the client’s side the whole time, whether it’s interior design for one room or the whole home.
We find that holiday home owners and those with investment properties appreciate our set price, curated furniture packages where we’ve made the design decisions for them.
We’re also a great resource for colour consultation and wallpaper sourcing. And when it comes to choosing cushions, Melita is our resident cushion queen.
Describe your dream house. Timeless, relaxed, full of texture and collected treasures with endless sunny spots to hang out with family and mates and, of course, on the Northern Beaches.
What are the three things that every home needs in order to sing? Visual balance, function, and unexpected moments.
What inspires you about the local area? The laidback and relaxed lifestyle, the ocean, the bushland, and especially living and entertaining outdoors.
For help on your perfect coastal escape, pop down and have a chat with Melita or Jess today. •

Pot Paradise
Maria De Vargas knows a pot or two. In fact she houses a urban jungle warehouse full of unique and quality pots and plants. A pot is more than just an object; it’s a way to create life. It has the ability to bring out the best in your plant, and make them thrive in any environment. Maria is the expert on all things pot-related, so if you need help deciding on which pot is right for your plant, she is the person to go to!
Maria, your pots are beautiful. How many pots do you have in your warehouse? Thank you, we love our pots as well. They are too many to count! Our range changes frequently depending on shipments and availability from overseas suppliers.
What do you think will be the next big trend in pots this Spring and going into Summer? I think people will be drawn again to the “cluster of 3” design, in which three pots of varying heights and dimensions are clustered in the same style. It’s an attractive option for many gardeners. Our Fibreglass range in pure white and black, such as the Bondi, Palm Beach and Avalon, is particularly popular for this design choice.
A new shipment of amazing statement pieces has just arrived from Indonesia, and we are also waiting for a container from Turkey and Morocco this November.
What are your top tips for choosing pots? The most important thing to remember is to measure the space that you have and monitor how much light is available. Light is key to maintaining a healthy plant. It is also worth taking
photos of the space and accompanying furniture so that you can refer back to them when faced with a huge choice at The Pot Warehouse.
Describe your most inspirational pot jungle for the home. I love mixing all styles of pots and plants. Big vibrant leaves will always create that feel of a tropical holiday in your home like Giant Elephant Ears or a Fan Palm.

ONE OF THE POT WAREHOUSE’S CLIENTS, THE BOATHOUSE ROSE BAY
You’ve announced an extension to your beautiful store called The Pot Garage. Tell us more. It was created to help our customers discover more than just beautiful pots and plants. We wanted to offer our customers beautiful pieces of furniture and homewares that can become instant statement pieces in their homes.
standing options. If you are unsure of what you want, going for a classic colour and shape is the best place to start.
Describe the types of pots available from the warehouse. We pride ourselves in stocking a very large range of pot styles in varying sizes, colours and prices in order to cater for everyone.
We’ve been privileged to work with some exquisite clients, like The Boat House Group and their locations around the Northern Beaches, Patonga and Sydney—particularly their recently opened Manly Pavilion on Manly Cove.
We understand that people have different budgets and tastes and we like to provide for all budget levels.
Our purpose is twofold. We have filled the space with a selection of unique homewares, art and one-of-a-kind items for your home. Plus we also wanted to create a space for local artists and designers to showcase their pieces, offering it as a Pop-Up space to hire.
The variety of pots on the market is vast and can be overwhelming. What’s your advice when choosing a pot for the home? Really a lot of it comes to budget. Make sure that you have one and that you are true to your own aesthetic. In my opinion, every home needs at least one statement pot. These work on their own and do not need to be clustered with other pots. We have many spectacular pieces ranging from those best suited to being on a mantel or much larger free-
How should pots be arranged? The correct arrangement really comes down to the area you are working with. It’s really important to take the dimensions of the space into accountin order to choose the right size pot(s). You also need to decide where you want the eye to be drawn to. For example – do you want one large statement pot to highlight a beautiful plant or do you want symmetry – such as two pots either side of a door so that balance is created.
The cluster of three design is very popular at the moment and I think it will continue to be in trend. It involves placing three pots in varying heights in a cluster – when the right plants are placed in each of the three pots the cluster becomes a statement focal point.
Each space is unique which is why our team are always on hand to help the customer choose the right combination.
What is the Pot Stylist? Tell us more about this new service? It’s a service that helps customers choose the right pot and plant for their home or office. We advise on which plant will thrive in the space and which pots will suit their style. We can also deliver and install the pots into your home.
Do you have any tips or tricks for planting in small spaces? Think tall and narrow to make the area feel higher and won’t take up as much space.
If you’re looking for a hero piece to showcase - what is your ultimate pot in store at the moment? It’s hard to go past a white Turkish pot as they are timeless and each pot has its own personality as they are handmade and have their own history.
How should pots be mixed and matched? Do you choose by colour or style? We can suggest lots of different combinations to our customers but there is no hard rule on how to mix and match – it’s more about what “vibe / feel” the customer is trying to create. It depends if the customer likes everything matching, or a hero statement piece.
Where do all the pots come from? Do you design your own range? We really like to showcase variety and have long-term relationships with many Australian and overseas suppliers. We also support small bespoke businesses with their ranges as we like to offer our customers something that is uniquely different. And yes, we also design our own ranges such as the Lightweight Palm Beach range – which means that our customers get a unique pot that is not going to be seen in everyone’s home.
Maria, we can’t wait to pop down to Mona Vale and visit your emporium of pots. See you soon! •

Sail
Nature’s gifts are endless. The raw materials we require for our creations give others inspiration to dream, and the results inspire us all to continue creating.
The unpredictable events of recent years, combined with and growing environmental awareness and climate change, have led people to focus on sustainability. People want to live life in a more natural way. They think about the origins of the products they buy and use, choosing materials that are sustainable and environmentally friendly, or made from recycled goods.
It’s time to take a step back from your busy schedule and try some new ideas, bringing more balance into your life with plants.
REVITALISE
Plants are more popular than ever as biophilic design trends continue to flourish. Whether you opt for an indoor jungle, indoor vertical garden or a single statement piece, there’s no better way to refresh any space than with greenery.
A tall, glossy Strelitzia or Kentia palm gives the impression of a luxe space and high ceilings; position near a window out of direct sunlight in that empty corner of your living room.
Consider an indoor tree. An olive, with its dainty, silver canopy and bony, grey trunk or even a lemon tree will make a great talking piece and instantly evoke a Mediterranean atmosphere.
Spring is an opportunity to revitalise, replenish, restore and renew, not only ourselves but our homes which are extensions of ourselves. So it makes absolute sense to begin at home.
At Gro Urban Oasis, you’ll find a healthy variety of baskets and ceramic pots to compliment your plant and home. We love earthy tones for Spring 2022 from soft terracottas and olives to mustards and ochres. Take a look at our Remy planter range, available in three sizes. Every shade of green continues to reign in our homes and wardrobes this season and this hearty olive will look just as good on your bookcase as it will on your bedside or bath.
REPLENISH
Spring is the ideal time to take stock of your existing plants. A good plant parent will now ensure their babies are well fertilised and transferred into larger pots to promote growth and give roots room to thrive throughout the warmer months. Besides, replanting is always a good excuse to come into Gro and marry your overgrown plant baby with a fresh, new pot or basket. For something a little different, make a statement with our Yana Hanging Basket. You’ll find they instantly elevate your home whatever your style.
Be sure to preserve and recycle your old pots for a younger plant or try re-gifting with a new plant and old pot combo.
RESTORE
Consider the pieces you’re planning to surrender at your next council clean up. Can that old timber chair, desk or closet be stripped and sanded down to its raw state? Experiment with a steel brush to create grain and texture, add beeswax or milk paint. Cover the doors with
embossed wallpaper and seal. Replace the top with marble, add a mirror or a bold herringbone tile. The possibilities are endless. Your DIY projects reward in countless ways. They add both monetary and sentimental value. The process itself is therapeutic and rewarding. Your family or friends will enjoy and treasure your work for generations.
RENEW
When we look for signs of renewal in the natural world, the focus is on our senses. All around us, we see young, green shoots sprouting from naked limbs regardless of the age of the tree. Heady scents pervade the air, and the anticipation of long days and warm nights ignite our zest for life once more.
After months of rain this Winter, it’s time to open windows wide, coax in the sunshine and cleanse the musty air trapped within our homes, in our soft furnishings and even our lungs. To enhance this process, introduce a fresh, home fragrance like our new Urban Rituelle range. Try the zesty lemongrass, lemon myrtle, grapefruit and eucalyptus or mandarin, basil and lime. These are available in diffusers, candles, body lotions, hand creams and soap bars.
The smallest changes, whether they be in your home or heart, can make the biggest difference and result in great rewards. These days we’re all counting our change, but it doesn’t take much to get the wind back in your sails or at least a soft Spring breeze. •

Beaches COVERED. went to see James in action in his Brookvale workshop.
What was once an old school surfboard shaping factory from the 70’s is now full of timber craftsmanship and the smell of freshly crafted wood furniture and raw timber slabs.
James was working on a dining table made of American Oak as we walked into his workshop. He’s passionate about respecting the wood and creating something unique that is individual to each customer.
“There is something quite majestic about timber,” says James. “The character it possesses and the feel of a piece of furniture that has been lovingly carved into something functional.”
Mayde Furniture is a tribute to the craftsmanship of a trade as old as time, which today stands in contrast to mass-produced familiarity.
James has been on the tools since he was 16 years old and has worked with award-winning architects, builders, and furniture makers to become a master of his trade.
Creating one-off, perfectly finished furniture, celebrating all things wood is what he does best.
“Caring about delivering each client their dream piece of furniture, creating it from raw materials into beautiful one-off pieces of furniture is what I do,” explains James.
Anything from raw, live edge dining tables to sleek bathroom cabinets,
James is happy for his clients to have as much scope to collaborate on the design process and he enjoys working with them.
Passionate about using sustainable, recycled and locally sourced materials, James has curated a large stockpile of timber slabs of trees fallen in the 2019/20 bushfires.
It’s this focus on taking a readily available resource, having the foresight to salvage it before it can become waste, having patience during the milling process and commitment to drying and curing the timber that has made Mayde a success.
“Our furniture is made to last,” says James. “People want to feel more connected to the world around them, rather than being so hung up on throwaway products. They want to harvest what we have as a resource and make something that should be around long after they have passed on.”
James is proud of his brand and furniture. He says that the Fairlight Bed and Bedsides are a popular choice for many and go well with the Fairlight Tall Boy for a complete bedroom set. The Pedestal table is also in great demand, as each piece of hand-crafted furniture sings with elegance and sophistication.
This man truly loves what he does.
You can visit James at his Brookvale workshop or give him a call to discuss creating a unique piece custom-tailored just for you. •

One way to start peeling off the layers is decluttering your space. Getting rid of “things” around you that don’t serve you anymore will create actual free space for you to breathe new life into. As the tidying Queen Maria Kondo preaches, literally letting go of physical possessions that don’t give you anymore joy is the key. Illie Home + Gift in Narrabeen offers an array of gifts and home decor. It’s the ultimate place to get a gift for someone special or to find some great ideas for your own home.
Beaches COVERED. had a chat with owner Simone Tilley who shared some of the secrets behind Illie’s success, including the fact that in addition to serving great coffee, Illie also makes a mean gourmet toastie.
With its wide range of retail gifts, sandwiches and café drinks, how would you describe your business in a nutshell? You’ll find Illie Home + Gift a stylish one-stop haven for coffee, gourmet toasties, flowers and gifts alongside hair and beauty services.
What are your top five food and beverage options on the menu? Our chicken wrap with peri peri sauce is always popular, and we’ve added some great pan-fried gourmet toasties to the menu. Try our tuna melt with capers and Swiss cheese, vegetarian melt with grilled veggies and halloumi, or a Reuben sandwich with corned beef, pickles, Swiss cheese and sauerkraut. We also have delicious coffee drinks like our sticky chai and turmeric sticky chai.
Tell us about your coffee at the cafe? We have recently switched to Vittoria Coffee’s smooth Oro blend. It consists of 100% Arabica beans and is from Central and South America. We’re thrilled with our new supplier; they’re very professional and are one of the
oldest, most established coffee companies in Australia.
You’ve partnered up with Cordony Hair. How did this come about? We go way back. We’re old school friends, and I’ve done interior design projects for the family. The Cordony sisters came up with the idea during COVID. It was like a match made in heaven—and our partnership just flowed from there.
The designed space looks harmonious. How’s the vibe with customers? Is the the hair salon delighted to have a place to eat right next door? For over thirty years, I have been designing luxurious interiors for homes and businesses. I was excited to design the space for my gift store and café—and working that into the salon. Creating spaces that are designed to affect the emotions of my clients and make them feel good is what I do best! We have a service for the salon clients: they text their beverage and food orders to our café from the chair, and we deliver it to their station. We also offer 15% discounts on any retail products or flowers on the day of their appointment. These luxuries create an unforgettable experience for the clients - and keep them coming back.
The café/retail space is stocked with an impressive array of products and gifts. What are some of the cool things you can buy there? We like to offer our customers the convenience of buying a gift or bouquet without having to travel to a major centre. We are also known for
a great selection of handbags, jewellery, and luxury items. We carry Linda Tahija fine jewellery, which is a beautiful local company we love to support; Susan Rose from Melbourne; ikou Natural candles and home scents from the Blue Mountains, Simone Voss Candles, lotions and washes from Alive, handbags from Louenhide, Oran Leather and Kompanero, baby products for new parents, and so much more.
With a talented florist on site, how would you describe your unique floral style at Illie? An eclectic mix of delicate and native flowers for a modern and organic creation.
This weekend is the perfect time to give yourself a little treat and stop by Illie Home + Gift! •

Spring Hair ’22
WITH LARA & CLAUDINE FROM CORDONY HAIR
At Cordony, we customise foiling and Balayage techniques to suit our clients’ preferences and create a formula to ensure your new look suits you.
THERE’S MORE TO THE BEACHES THAN JUST BLONDES.
Hair colour is fresh and fabulous.
Spring is the time of year when we are most inspired to renew our look.
At Cordony Hair, we love giving our clients the chance to experience a whole new look with a fresh new colour and cut.
SPRING 2022 IS ALL ABOUT... WARM SHADES.
On the Beaches, we see a lot of beautiful blondes. And for our beachy blonde clients, we love adding in subtle lowlights to make their hair look more dimensional, adding in buttery beige tones. Or for a bit more pop, light copper or strawberry tones.
Feeling like adding more vibrancy? Foil highlights can be bolder and brighter. For those die-hard blondes who love their platinum locks, a subtle shadow root adds softness and is a great way to update your look without doing anything drastic.
Sandy or Caramel Balayage is the latest in colouring. It requires little maintenance as it grows out naturally.
This season, beautiful chocolate and caramel tones are also trending. We can achieve this look through Balayage or foil highlights for a multidimensional colour. Similarly, darker colours look great with some warm auburn or copper highlights scattered throughout. For a subtle, but beautiful update to any dark or warm colour, we love adding honey or caramel face framing to add a pop.
BUT NOT EVERYONE WANTS FOILS
A glossy all over colour can look beautiful and makes a statement. And you can choose from rich chocolates, warm coppers and auburns to complement your skin tone. If you have lighter skin, strawberry blonde or glossy warm caramel colours are ideal.
Cordony Hair believes every head of hair is a work of art. Our talented colourists and stylists will ensure your tresses look as radiant, from root to tip. We’ll even guide you with recommendations for the best bonding or conditioning treatments to be applied during your colour service. We can’t wait to see you in our salon for your Spring makeover!
When you want to treat your hair with the utmost respect, K18 – Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask is the perfect solution. This luxurious mask uses patented peptide technology to repair damage from bleach, colour and chemical services while restoring strength, softness and smoothness to your hair – all in just four minutes! •

A Circular Wardrobe
Sale Lab is a treasure trove of all things fashion. It’s a boutique where you can find fashion clothing at a fraction of what it costs in the mainstream stores. But Sale Lab isn’t just about designer labels.
Britt Collinson is not only the mastermind behind some of the best dressed women on the Northern Beaches, she’s also on a mission to help stop big brand fashion from making its way to landfill.
Beaches COVERED. dropped by to find out more about her innovative approach to recycling high end fashion.
Meet Britt. Lover of all things fluffy with a passion for repurposing. The creator of Britt Bears is on a mission; to address the issue of fashion waste in Australia. By launching Sale Lab, a genius solution to lighten landfill while helping people to look great and save, she’s definitely onto something.
Sale Lab is a pop-up boutique located in Brookvale, and now in Queenscliff, specialising in selling great brands at great prices—up to 80% off normal retail price.
This fashion mecca offers a great selection of elegant and stylish apparel from designers around the world and Australia. It provides not only a great deal for shoppers but also breathes
new life into pieces that may have been considered hard to sell.
How do they do it? They find and recapture items that have slipped through retail and warehousing nets, turning this inventory into opportunity. These items could be one-offs, overstock, a sample, tagging issue, missing bead, returned or slightly imperfect. However, 90 percent of Sale Lab treasures in store and online are brand new.
Many of the labels are still on trend or absolutely timeless. You could pick up a Paco Rabanne or Hervé Léger cocktail dress, a Badgley Mischka designer gown, Alexander Wang designer boots or Manolo Blahnik pumps. There are so many brands, even Adidas, Bec & Bridge, Alias Mae, RayBan, Calvin Klein and P.E Nation—the selection is endless with Sale Lab unpacking new items daily.
SUSTAINING CIRCULAR FASHION
A circular fashion industry is one that minimises waste and pollution, keeps materials in use for as long as possible, including through reusing and recycling, and regenerates natural systems.
“Many retailers and brands do not have the outlet, time, or sometimes space to move this kind of stock on, while ensuring that they uphold sustainable values,” explained Britt. “That’s where we come in with a solution to facilitate this.”
“It’s all about sustainability and giving fashion pieces a new lease on life.”
Britt is always thinking about ways to help the environment. She goes out of her way to repair rather than waste. “Recycle, repurpose, recreate and recommerce values are at our core,” says Britt. “It’s amazing what two broken pieces of jewellery can create, or two dresses fused together to make one knockout number.”
“It’s like retail therapy meets retail rescue in one shop.”
“Everything gets second chances with us,” says Britt. “We look at any garment and see the potential to create something new. Garments that can’t be mended are passed onto customers or students who can use the fabric, zippers or embellishments for their own creations.”
ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES
A second pop-up shop has just opened in Queenscliff. It’s another mecca for beautiful pieces to suit every occasion at a fraction of their original price. It’s a great location to just drop by in your morning tea or lunch break. Who knows what you’ll find.

“When we found the second location, I wanted the fitout of the new shop to be recycled as well—a bit of a mish-mash of preloved furniture and racks with a twist. The whole reason behind Sale Lab is to reuse, recycle, and revitalise, and that shouldn’t stop at the clothing.
“It was very satisfying to hunt down what we found,” gleams Britt. “I rescued most of the tout from various online sites on Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace; a quick clean and install. Plus the sellers were happy knowing the fitout wasn’t going to landfill.”

Sale Lab also does its part to lessen the burden on the environment by recycling all of its packaging materials.
“When the shoes arrive, there is a lot of plastic wrapping and paper. We strip everything away and recycle carefully.”
“We want people to come into the shop, bring their dog, have a chat and leave with something amazing, with a spring in their step knowing they’e also made a sustainable choice,” says Britt. “We also have a little community of returning customers who come in every week and share how their Sale Lab outfits looked on their special day.”
The business is growing, and they will soon be able to sell additional product categories besides fashion. “There is a lot of merchandise sitting on warehouse shelves looking for a new home,” says Britt.
The team is also putting together workshops to repair bags, clothes or jewellery. Watch this space for details on upcoming workshops.

While the Queenscliff store pop-up might be smaller than its Brookvale counterpart, it still offers an amazing opportunity for shoppers to buy a wide range of branded fashion at an absolute bargain. Shoppers can get a designer high-end outfit including shoes, sunglasses, bag, and jewellery for under $200. Or, the latest fashion jeans and activewear for $30.
And
And with each purchase, the customer helps support a better future for our planet that would otherwise be destined for landfills.
Sale Lab posts new looks daily on their Instagram to let customers know about their latest arrivals. “It’s always exciting to see what we have unpacked that day,” says Britt. “I know our customers are going to be messaging us pretty fast to put these items on hold. It’s a lot of fun.”
Keep an eye on Sale Lab’s social media for fresh bargains. Or, pop down to either store and discover a eureka of fashion. •

NEW X7 SET TO XCELL
BY JON THOMSON
HERE ON THE BEACHES, WE RARELY WRITE ABOUT FUTURE CAR MODELS. BUT IN THIS ISSUE, WE DECIDED THE ANTICIPATION OF BMW’S LATEST FLAGSHIP SUV, THE NEW X7, WAS SUCH THAT WE THOUGHT IT WORTHWHILE TO BRIEF YOU ON WHAT WE BELIEVE WILL BE NOT ONLY A TECHNOLOGICAL TOUR DE FORCE, BUT ONE OF THE MOST DESIRABLE LUXURY SUVS ON THE ROAD.
BMW’s luxury SUV flagship will boast brand-new styling with a redesigned front fascia, debuting split headlights featuring the daytime-running lights positioned on top and its main beams below, using new tech, adaptive matrix LED technology as well as ‘Iconic Glow’ illumination in the X7’s ‘kidney’ grilles.
There are also design upgrades to the lower front and rear bumpers along with stunning new 23-inch alloy wheels. BMW has also promised a breathtaking palette of colours available, showcasing even greater presence on the road.
It’s not just the external styling that will set the new X7 apart. The interior has had a significant redesign including
receiving the latest BMW iDrive 8 infotainment technology, using a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster along with a 14.9-inch central touchscreen, both of which have been integrated into a single curved glass panel that is beautiful to look at and to use.
Naturally, the new X7 is also equipped with the latest wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In addition, there will be augmented-reality navigation and a personal assistant along with 5G connectivity. For the techno inclined, you will also be able to use your iPhone as a digital key to open and start the car. Now we like the sound of that given our propensity for losing keys.
The cockpit has been thoroughly redesigned with new slim and elegant air vents as well as new ambient light bar in front and a new restyled shift lever that is totally electronic ‘fly-by-wire’ technology.
Luxury abounds throughout with a new array of trim materials and heated seats, as well as an illuminated panoramic glass sunroof, four-zone climate control, and a 10-speaker audio system.
Powering the new X7 is a choice of two powerplants, the xDrive40d diesel and the M60i petrol V8. The xDrive40d is an upgraded version of BMW’s superb 3.0-litre turbo inline-six delivering 250kW of power and a stunning
78 // LIFESTYLE 78 // Beaches COVERED. BMW ROADTEST
700Nm of torque. That means power is up around 28 per cent while torque has been increased by 80Nm. This gives the diesel X7 the ability to go from standing start to 0-100km/h in just 6.1 seconds.
The X7 flagship is now the M60i, featuring BMW’s all new 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 which is set to be used in the next iteration of the legendary BMW M5 sports sedan and boasts 390kW of power along with 750Nm of torque enabling it to sprint from 0-100km/h in just 4.7-seconds with a top speed of 250km/h.
Both powerplants are paired to BMW’s impressive eight speed automatic and then to the ground via all four wheels. It is also paired to a 48 volt mild hybrid system delivering an added 9kW and 200Nm of torque under heavy loads.
There is adaptive air suspension as standard while the X7 M60i features a rear-wheel steer capability for added manoeuvrability, while active anti-roll bars are also standard on the flagship M60i.
With all that performance, BMW hasn’t overlooked the safety with a full suite
of safety tech including autonomous emergency braking system with a new intersection support function, as well as a side exit warning system, and a reversing assistant function which remembers the last 200 metres the vehicle has travelled and can automatically guide it backwards without hitting anything. For those with limited tow skills, there is a trailer manoeuvring system designed for low speeds.
Have we whet your appetite? As far as we are concerned, we can’t wait for the new X7 due in the next few months before the end of the year. Bring it on! •

Living your YachtbestLife.
Imagine yourself scantily clad, bubbles, tunes, friends, out in the sunshine on an impeccably sleek superyacht while being waited on by a crew dedicated to fulfilling your every wish. There really isn’t a prettier picture.
Sam Dunleavy and Joey Crútch can make this dream a reality. With over 10 years experience living life onboard 60m to 100m yachts in The Mediterranean, the couple are experts on yacht living. And so ‘The Yacht Life’ was born, Sam and Joey’s newly launched superyacht charter company.
“It’s not just about chartering a yacht on the water but living the yacht lifestyle and soaking up everything it offers. From having the freedom to explore the ocean, to seeing amazing places inaccessible by land,” explains Joey and Sam.
LUXURY SUPER YACHTS 80 // LIFESTYLE
PHOTOGRAPHY: THE YACHT LIFE
It is clear that The Yacht Life is more than just a charter business. It is a lifestyle company promoting and delivering the immersive experience of being part of the superyacht world.
Founding The Yacht Life back in 2020, the couple have worked hard to achieve their position as one of Australia’s leading luxury yacht charter agencies. With over a decade of combined experience in the industry and access to superyachts all over the world, their expertise and unwavering knowledge of this lucrative society has contributed to their overwhelming success. They know a high standard of customer service is required and carry it out meticulously for each individual charter and concierge needs.
Sam and Joey distinguish themselves from other charter brokers as they proactively partner with land-based companies to share the yacht life. In March this year, The Yacht Life partnered with Aqua Rugby Australia
organising a flotilla of superyachts for the event. The superyachts created a floating grandstand for a game of ‘5 vs 5’ full-contact rugby on a 30 x 30 metre pontoon pitch. Five superyachts are again secured for Aqua Rugby 2.0 on 10-12 November 2022 on Sydney Harbour.
Ever gazed across Sydney’s bejewelled harbour and pondered over who is actually onboard those luxury yachts? Sam and Joey’s goal is to make the world of yachting accessible to every individual who is interested and intrigued by superyachts and especially on the shores of Australia.
Australia is home to some of the most incredible destinations on an International level.
“We want to be a part of building awareness of the Australasian superyacht industry making it a sought-after destination for travellers similar to
that of the Mediterranean and the Caribbean,” says Joey and Sam.
With their first-hand experience of the industry and having a global network at their fingertips, the couple are definitely gaining attention with The Yacht Life being appointed as the central agent for Australia’s newest superyacht to the market, Sea Raes.
Sea Raes is an extension of Byron Bay’s iconic boutique hotel, Raes on Wategos. Sharing Sam and Joey’s vision, Sea Raes is making the most of Australia’s best destinations alternating charter availability in the Whitsundays and the iconic Sydney Harbour. The addition of Sea Raes to their fleet, paired with their second-to-none customer service and ability to create and execute bespoke itineraries is what keeps the couple top of mind with potential clients.
The Yacht Life will continue to position Australia as a ‘must-visit’ superyacht destination, voicing this message to the world. Sam and Joey believe Sydney Harbour and the Whitsundays alone are just two of the many stunning attractions on offer. Sydney Harbour with its spectacular city skyline and hidden coves is perfect for superyacht events and vacations, and the Whitsundays is one of Australia’s crown jewels, rivalling the best of the Caribbean. •

82 // LIFESTYLE
Have you ever had that feeling after you meet a new person, when they make you laugh just a little bit or sometimes a lot, and then after a while, you become besties!
When you meet new people, it expands your social life. You create new relationships and broaden your knowledge about the world—different cultures, different interests and personalities of the people around you. The best thing about it is this can happen anywhere!
Did you know there are 7.753 billion people in the world?
With every new generation, our parents, grandparents and elders in the community pass down their knowledge to enrich us about who we are and where we come from.
This knowledge of People allows us to open our eyes and ears, peer into different ideas to solve problems, create opportunities and discover interesting cool stuff. For exampe, how to build
rockets to fly to the moon, create deep water submarines that can uncover exotic sea life deep under our oceans, or maybe the coaches of our sports teams. These people have tremendous knowledge that can allow you to train to maybe one day win a gold medal at the Olympics.
People are also different. That’s what makes the world interesting. What would the world be like if we dressed, talked and acted the same? Pretty boring right!
Some people are very important and become leaders in their community, making lots of decisions. Some of these people are Prime Ministers, Premiers and Principals. However, they’re not the only people who can spread a message. In a free country like Australia, we all have a voice and can speak our minds across platforms such as social media.
I have lots of people in my life. My parents—Mum and Dad, my sisters Scarlet and Ivy. My Aunty Mimi and my Nana, my cousins and their parents— Uncle Adam and Aunty Anne-Marie. Plus loads of sports and other old friends.
But my newest friends are what I want to talk about. You see, one year ago, I switched schools to Manly Vale Public School. It was a little scary at first but soon I had a huge new bunch of new friends.
I love my new school because it turned boring into heaps of fun. The teachers are amazing. Our Principal, Mrs Lee, is strong, kind and fun. And my friends and I get up to heaps of great stuff.
Soccer at lunchtime is one of my favourite things. In this game, my friends and I—both girls and boys—dribble the ball, kick it, and score goals in our soccer games. It’s a bundle of laughs, and we even trade our snacks and joke around.
These people are some of my favourite people. We’re there for each other and have fun every day.
People are just cool. Life has no limits so this Spring, my motto is: “Just go for it”. •

Building Community HEALTHY OUTCOMES
Schools are a vital lynchpin in any community. And building a sense of community within a school is critically important for children’s mental health and learning, particularly in a diverse and multi-faith setting such as John Colet School. Through collaborative learning opportunities within class, to opportunities for students to engage across year levels in our buddy program, our students learn with, and are supported by each other.
Likewise, the collective understanding between home and school helps ensure there are no gaps for students and that they are supported at all stages.
The key to children’s healthy development and progress at school ultimately comes down to the connection between the student and the teacher. Our students stay with the same teacher for three years in Infants, two years for Years 3 and 4 and two years for Years 5 and 6. The extended time allows for a deeper, longer lasting connection between the teacher and the student, and also the teacher and the parent. There is a continuity that avoids the usual time in the first quarter or half of the year where a teacher would usually need to establish rapport and knowledge of individual learning styles.
The unique aspects of our curriculum from Lower 1st through to 6th Class, such as classical languages, Shakespeare,
and enriched singing and art programs, extend the students holistically while at the same time developing their sense of community and the role they can play to support themselves and their peers. With only two classes per year group, students have the opportunity to get to know each other across the age groups, both at play and through activities. Our kindergarten students are also supported in their special first year of school by their 6th Class buddies. This is particularly powerful in the first months as the children become accustomed to their new environment, however the regular catchups occur throughout the year, and provide great benefits for young and ‘old’ alike!
Vegetarian, sit down lunches are provided each day to all our students in our dining hall. Our Infants children are encouraged to try a range of foods and expand their taste preferences. Invariably over time, children develop a fondness for trying new foods.
“Lunch time provides an opportunity for children to sit together, pause, serve each other, establish manners and enjoy the physical benefits of nutritious food eaten in good company. The vegetarian menu ensures that all can serve and eat together in an inclusive environment.”
JULIAN WILCOCK, HEADMASTER
JOHN COLET SCHOOL
A co-ed, multifaith school in Belrose, with engaged students inspired by enriched learning.
A FEELING OF COMMUNITY
Building a sense of community within a school is critically important for children’s mental health and learning. Through collaborative learning opportunities within class, and by engaging across year levels, our students learn with, and are supported by, each other.
A school is not an island when it comes to the education and social development of a child. It is crucial that parents are connected with their child’s learning and are supportive of the school’s approach and ethos. Parents are actively connected in many ways with the individual classroom, and the Parents and Friends Association also supports community development through the wider school environment.
As a stand-alone primary school, our focus is entirely on the 5-12 age group. We see this stage as fundamental in setting the academic foundations, as well as a love of learning, resilience, the feeling of self-worth, and a sense of community that a child will need to enter high school and beyond. •

Who is Northern Beaches Skin Medics and where are you located? The Northern Beaches Skin Medics Clinic was established in 2013 by Dr Julie Argent from Northern Beaches Skin Cancer Clinic. Warriewood-based and independently owned, the clinic supports and optimises skin health for patients of all ages. Doctors and nurses provide comprehensive, high-quality, ethical, and caring medical, surgical, laser, and aesthetic services to patients.
Tell us about the people behind NB Skin Medics? Our clinician, Dr Masoud Moghaddam, is a highly qualified and experienced procedural skin cancer and cosmetic physician. Trained by the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery and Medicine (ACCSM) and the Skin Cancer College of Australia (SCCA), he has a special interest in skin cancer and aesthetic skin care including injectables, laser treatment, minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, and sclerotherapy.
Can you tell us about cosmetic skin treatments and how skin treatments have changed people’s lives? Aesthetic (cosmetic) medicine encompasses a wide range of procedures, which allows us to restore or reshape those features that make you feel less desirable, improving your appearance and restoring your self-esteem. We deliver a diverse range of skin treatments.
If I need treatment, how many treatments will it usually take?
Dr Masoud Moghaddam personally consults and assesses all patients before devising a patient treatment plan which might take one session or multiple sessions.
Cosmetic Surgery the right way
The appearance of skin isn’t just a cosmetic issue, it often has a significant impact on self-esteem.
Northern Beaches Skin medics can help you regain your self- confidence by removing physical anomalies that may be holding you back. Skin issues such as rosacea, age spots, port wine stains, spider veins or acne scarring are more than just skin-deep changes; they’re life image ones.
Why would people choose your NB Skin Medics over another?
The vast variety of cosmetic treatments publicised in the media frequently confuses patients. It is our objective to assist our patients’ appreciation of aesthetic principles and maximise beauty potential via minimally invasive procedures. Our highly qualified physician works with you to develop a unique and personalised treatment plan.
What technology do you use in treatments? Our cosmetic clinic utilises authentic products and devices including high-quality world-renown injectables, thread lifts and laser devices, conducted by a licensed physician. The technology we employ is the most advanced available.
NB Skin Medics is associated with Northern Beaches Skin Cancer Clinic. How do they complement one another. Northern Beaches Skin Medics is the latest addition to the Northern Beaches Skin Cancer Clinic practice. The name Skin Medics was chosen specifically with the aim of letting patients know that we are highly qualified cosmetic physicians and aesthetic clinicians.
People are becoming more aware of the damage the sun can have on their skin. What are your tips on looking after their skin? Wrinkles, fine lines and pigmentation are inevitable skin woes that often appear with age. While we like to place blame on getting another year
older, the main culprit is photoaging, which is 90 percent of visible changes to the skin caused by exposure to sunlight and ultraviolet (UV) light.
Wearing sunscreen every day can do more than just prevent skin cancer. It can avert signs of photoaging as well. Look for a sun protection factor (SPF) of 50 or higher. Water-resistant formulas are encouraged. Reapply every two hours or sooner if swimming or exercising. Avoid sun exposure when the sun is strongest, usually between 10 am and 2 pm. When outdoors, wear a hat with a brim.
If you’re already experiencing some signs of photoaging, you’ll also want to incorporate skin care products and some laser treatments, designed to reverse sun damage.
How should people check their skin and any change in appearance? I believe people’s conception of the aesthetic, natural beauty and aging process could be easily misled by media and general public opinions. That is why having a consultation and assessment with a qualified cosmetic physician can help patients to have a better understanding of specific personalised goals and needs to improve their natural beauty and skin care.
To learn more about skin concerns and how to address them, book an appointment with Dr Masoud Moghaddam today.

Spring is in the air
AH-CHOO!
A AH H g H rin r prn -CCH
Even surfing can exacerbate symptoms of hay fever, says Harbord Homeopathic Clinic practitioner and avid surfer Sabina Vatter. Beaches COVERED. sat down with Sabina to find out how to help tame the symptoms of this seasonal allergy with homeopathy solutions.
For many, Spring brings allergic reactions to pollen, grass, and blossoming flowers. These symptoms, known as hay fever, or allergic rhinitis are similar to having a cold but without the fever. Symptoms usually include runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing, stuffy nose, and red itchy eyes. They can be experienced for anything from a few hours up to a few weeks or longer.
Some recent research trials and systematic reviews back up the effectiveness of homeopathy for hay fever, specifically for nasal and eye relief compared to placebo*.
The flare-up of the mucous membranes in the eyes, nose and airways, after being exposed to the pollen are what causes the allergic reaction.
To prevent symptoms from flaring up, try to stay indoors when the pollen count is highest—in the morning and evening, change clothes and remove shoes when coming home after having been outside, keep windows shut when it’s windy, vacuum and wet-dust the house regularly, and keep pets out of bedrooms and living areas.
Homeopathic remedies can be very useful for hay fever in Spring and Summer. For an acute situation, it’s really helpful to have these homeopathic remedies available and to choose them according to the symptoms:
ALLIUM CEPA: A solution to treat nasal congestion, such as an irritation similar when peeling onions; burning sensations in your nose and eyes; watery discharge; eyes are red, irritated and sensitive to light.
ARSENICUM ALBUM: A homeopathic remedy that can help the irritation of a blocked nose with watery discharge and sneezing, to feeling that your eyes are burning and swollen. It’s relieved by an eye wash/compress but is worsened by being outdoors or cold. So staying indoors is best, while keeping warm reduces your symptoms.
EUPHRASIA: For use for swollen, watery eyes that you constantly wipe or rub; thick eye discharge; gummy, sore, gritty eyes which feels worse in bright sunlight and at night-time, but also irritable indoors. You can also try getting outside into the open air to ease the symptoms.
NUX VOMICA: This can be used to ease blocked nostrils, intense itching of ears, nose and eyes. You might have an ineffectual urge to sneeze with a rough and dry throat. Symptoms are worse in the morning for coffee, alcohol, and strong smells.
SABADILLA: Often used when you are surrounded by a lot of flowers in bloom; stubborn sneezing, thin watery mucus, blocked, itchy nose; watery eyes, feeling worse in the cold open-air and sunlight.

BODY AND BALANCE
Improve your posture & feel great
Quintard of Body & Balance says the best way to stay healthy is to have good posture.
Good posture means your bones are in their best position, your muscles, joints and ligaments are relaxed, and your vital organs are in their best position. The better your posture, the healthier you will be. It’s never too late to improve your posture. Jill offers the YogaPilates Fusion® exercise program which can not only improve your core and posture but also keep you in tip top shape over Spring.
BUT TO GET YOU STARTED, CHECK OUT THESE QUICK AND EASY POSES FROM JILL HEALY QUINTARD HERSELF.
CAT STRETCH
THE ROLL DOWN
The Roll Down will help to balance the muscles that support the spine as you gradually roll down toward a mat or floor, thus drawing your abdominal muscles on the breath out. Roll back up stacking one vertebra on the other till standing tall, crown of head to ceiling.
On all fours, inhale through the nose, and exhale as you arch your spine, drawing in the abdominals and gently taking your chin toward chest. Inhale and reverse the other direction, feeling each vertebra. This can be done standing using the back of a chair, edge of table or ballet barre. Keep knees soft.
SPINE TWIST
THE PLANK Plank pose is ideal for engaging the core, building strength and balance, and improving focus and alignment. Place your arms under your shoulders and extend your legs back with toes tucked under. Picture the back of your body as a long plank; lengthen your neck, engage your core on the exhale, and imagine balancing a cup of tea or glass of champagne on top of your back. Hold for three breaths.
ANK id l k h h iidlfih
SIDE PLANK
The Pilates side plank strengthens the core, improves posture, and enhances cardiovascular strength. From a sitting position on your side, raise your top elbow or arm on an inhale, lengthen your torso and extend your top arm laterally. Hold for three inhales and exhales while engaging your core. You can modify this move by sitting rather than lifting your arm but use core awareness of alignment.
A spine twist is one of the most important exercises for your spine, as well as your posture. If you sit at a desk or don’t move in a variety of positions throughout the day, you need to do this exercise every day. There are many different ways to do it; standing or sitting on the floor/mat or on a chair, lengthened spine, crown of head to ceiling and inhale through your nose. On the exhale through your mouth, turn to your right and take it to three little pulses on the breath out, inhale again and turn to your left. Arms can be outstretched, or hands on shoulders, or on the knee if sitting at your desk. •

2nd-year Birthday Celebration
The Root Cause
Lunchboxes are a minefield. Kids are hungry, fussy and stubborn and we are time poor. So we watch the rainbow of food that we intend to feed our children slowly getting drowned in a sea of processed beige snacks.
Suzanne Burke from The Root Cause is on a mission to change this by educating children and parents about basic nutrition and helping people make simple changes with huge benefits to overall health.
The program demonstrates shocking visuals of sugar content in everyday lunch box items alongside eye-opening statistics of childhood diabetes and obesity.
This month, my business celebrates its second birthday, and I would like to give a big shout out and thank you to all my beautiful customers on the Northern Beaches.
Two years ago, I launched an online health business. Sage Wellbeing Co was created as an extension of my personal optimal health journey and my love of natural medicine.
I curated a range of potent nutrition supplements and health products that truly make a difference to how you feel. I am especially passionate about phytonutrients and their ability to fight disease and promote health.
I have been overwhelmed by the volume of support and love I have received in the local community.
I love hearing the stories of how my products have changed the direction of someone’s health.
I run my business from my home and welcome visitors to the Sage Wellbeing Co shop by appointment. I look forward to hearing from you.

Parents are then armed with skills to read and understand food ingredients labels, portion control and simple, achievable lunchbox alternatives that won’t cause a food strike in our kids.
It is an incredible program that teaches both adults and children the importance of fuelling young bodies in a positive and efficient way. •

Narelle’s passion for sports psychology and sport comes from her upbringing in a very sporty family. She grew up playing all sports but never attended swim squads, yet Narelle competed at school state and represented at district, state, and national level in many areas.
‘A Skill for Life’—a phrase coined by Narelle—suggests that swimming must be in the DNA of anyone living next to the coast, particularly on the Northern Beaches.
Narelle has trained many athletes to great success.
“As a coach, it’s all about analysis, sports science, programming, and the biomechanics, seeing the inconsistencies and knowing how to fix them.”
The discipline and sacrifice required to become a highly trained athlete with no guarantee of success is not for the half-hearted.
Narelle knows about the rigorous training, dedication, and perseverance it takes to become the best of the best.
“Training at a professional level is like having a full-time job with the same hours as a regular 9 to 5. You can spend up to two and half hours in the mornings in the pool, then gym and strength training. Then again in the afternoon, another two to two and a half hours in the pool. You do this five and a half days a week, plus competitions, camps, and teams,” says Narelle.
Narelle has coached some of the world’s most talented swimmers during her career. She is credited with developing and coaching Elka Whalan (nee Graham) who competed in the 2000 Olympics, winning silver, and became Number 1 in the 200m freestyle at the 2001 World Championships; and coaching Priya Cooper, who became a highly decorated Paralympian, winning nine Gold Medals. Narelle also has a remarkable track record guiding Uncle Toby’s Ironmen and women, triathletes and open-water swimmers. And this success is continuing.
Narelle tells the story of James Pittar, a blind swimmer with huge ambitions to become a Paralympian. But, he wasn’t a sprinter and was better suited to open water. In 1997, Narelle had to tell James that he wasn’t fast enough for the Paralympics and asked him to think
about other goals. “This was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do in my career—but his determination to succeed was an inspiration.”
Under Narelle’s guidance, he became the first blind man to swim the English Channel in 1998. It took him 13 hours and 50 minutes. He went on to become the world’s greatest blind marathon open-water swimmer under her tutelage, swimming iconic distances on every continent and still boasting the record of 23 laps of Manly to Queenscliff Beach!
Narelle is at her happiest when coaching. This passion has seen her and her team of teachers and coaches instruct clients as young as 6-months old through to adults at NS Swim Schools.
“It’s never too late to start swimming, no matter your ability or age.”
The day I stop learning and loving coaching will be the day I stop working.
You can catch Narelle, most mornings and afternoons pool side, watching, coaching, and mentoring the people of the Beaches who want to accomplish their personal best and achieve their goals, at one of life’s most important skills—Swimming. •

SAM AYLIFFE ASTUTE MANLY
In recent months, we’ve seen the Reserve Bank of Australia increase the official cash rate several times. Consequently the banks also move in this direction with their home loan interest rates. This means borrowers will be paying more per month for newly established loans.
Two major flow on effects of these rises are:
• Borrowing capacity for new loans has reduced
• Those on fixed rates need to be careful of paying attention to when their fixed rate expires.
How does interest rates affect my borrowing capacity?
As you can imagine, when interest rates rise, your borrowing power decreases. This is because as rates increase, so do repayments; and your borrowing capacity is based on what you can afford to pay based on your income and spending habits.
For example, if the cash rate rose to 2.35 percent next year as predicted by Westpac, a family of four on a combined annual income of $150,000 may be able to borrow around $160,000 less from the bank*.
To help combat this problem, you could consider paying for a rate lock. This means that your interest rate won’t change between the offer you make on the home and settlement, as long as you close within the specified time frame and there are no changes to your application. Costs vary, so mention it to your mortgage broker to discuss further.
What should I do when my fixed rate expires?
For many Australians, the fixed rate period is due to expire in the next 12 months. With the large increase in interest rates over the last few months, and with more to come, many are now considering what to do when this period ends. So what are your options?
What many people don’t realise is that if you do nothing, you loan will likely default to a Bank Standard Variable Rate (BSVR), often higher than what you could get if you shopped around, or even higher than if you resigned with at the same bank!
Instead, it’s time to look at reviewing your home loan and preparing yourself well before the fixed rate period ends. You could look at options like refixing your home loan, switching to variable, or splitting your home loan.
The most important thing is to shop around and find a competitive loan that suits you. And a great way to do that is with the help of a mortgage broker who has access to a wide range of lenders and products to suit.
If you’d like to see what might suit you, come say Hi. We’re your locally owned and operated Northern Beaches Mortgage Brokers with decades of experience, offering a personalised service from our new office right on the waterfront at Manly. When building a home, choosing the right builder is one of the most important and challenging decisions to make.
Many builders are in the market, but at G.J. Gardner Homes, they have a difference. Building the perfect home has always been and will always be their number one priority. But what truly makes them different is what they do during the process of building a homebecause that is where the true emotion lies. They don’t just build homes, they build joy.
HOME DESIGN STAGE
When G.J. Gardner designs a house, they consider your block, your climate, and the structure of the home. The team; Jane, Grant and Steve, will also make sure that the design plans will suit your family’s size and lifestyle needs. This is done by designing in accordance with regulations which comply with building codes.
PRECONSTRUCTION
AND APPROVAL STAGE
During this stage, G.J. Gardner starts the process of having your home approved via the various channels available under NSW Planning Legislation. Project Manager, Donna, will take you through the intricacies of planning and building approval as she manages all paperwork and correspondence with the relevant certifying body—from council if using development application approval, or private certifier if utilising certificate of compliance approval.
COLOUR SELECTION
The Colour Selection is the fun part. It’s where they discuss and clarify all the items that will be supplied and
FEEL THE JOY BUILDING
Building a home is a journey. G.J. Gardner Homes Sydney North have always known this and have never underestimated the investment their customers are making, not just financially, but emotionally. Beaches COVERED. found out how this local Home Builder is bringing the joy back to new home building.
installed in the new home. While this is not a design consultation, this meeting is an important step in finalising products, materials, and colours for the house build. They recommend an appointment of approximately 5 hours to complete this important stage.
PREPARATION IS KEY
It is crucial to be ready on the final consultation day to make final decisions on your home design. There is a wealth of great design out there, and they can help you achieve the look you want in your home. The Brookvale based team’s top tip – Create a design mood board. Gather inspiring pictures from the Internet searches, Pinterest boards, magazines and books. Not only will you find the type of designer styles you like, it also helps determine your colour palette and home style.
Other preparation questions that you should ask yourself are:
• Who is the new home intended for? How can G.J. create a harmonious space for each family member?
• What features and/or spaces are not negotiable for your family, and what are the “nice to haves”?
• What are your surroundings? Should you compliment or contrast these features?
• Would you like your new home to have a relaxed, or a more formal feel?
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
Once these three stages have been completed, the team arranges for the site to be ready for construction.
Let’s get started on your new dream home. Contact G.J. Gardner today. •

Gardner Sydney North team.
Shopping for your dream home just got easier.
Seaforth local, Fiona Landreth, is one of Sydney’s most-loved property shoppers and one of the Northern Beaches friendliest faces. As a real estate specialist with over 15 years experience, she has made a living out of helping others buy property, the smart way.

“Investing in your financial future is not a luxury.”
Fiona Landreth, Buyers Advocate, Property Life Coach
When you sit down for a coffee with Fiona Landreth, you better book out half a day in your diary. The affable mum of two loves her business, loves to talk shop, and is one of the Northern Beaches' most caring business owners.
“My expertise is property and my passion is helping people,” she says, from her favourite coffee shop in Seaforth. “People give me their checklist and I help them find the perfect property that ticks all the boxes.”
Fiona has been navigating the real estate market for almost two decades and her holistic approach has earned her the fitting title of Property Life Coach.
“Buyers typically ‘don’t know what they don’t know’,” she explains. “I understand the buying process, risks and complexities, and I have access to the most relevant and up-to-date property research. I carry out thorough due diligence to ensure my clients avoid all the risks.”
From evaluating and negotiating property prices, to accessing pre-market
and off-market listings, Fiona prides herself on saving people time, money, and stress while offering smart advice and emotional support.
“You can do it on your own, but it can be very costly. I help people make informed decisions when it comes to buying their property.”
Whether you’re looking for a new family home, an investment property, or downsizing, Fiona and her team make the whole process smooth and simple.
“You have someone you can trust doing all the groundwork. And when you’re spending that much money, you want to make sure you’re getting the right property, for the best price - that’s what I help people do.”
OWNING YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE
These days, it’s not uncommon to spend hundreds of dollars on cleaners, gardeners, and personal trainers. People invest in experts to fix their cars and style their wardrobes. Then at the same time, they’ll spend millions of dollars on a property after seeing a house only once.
“Everyone thinks they’re property experts but there are so many pitfalls,” she explains. “After my divorce, a friend suggested I see a financial planner. I remember thinking, ‘Why on earth should I see a financial planner? I’m on the brink of bankruptcy.’ And that’s exactly why I needed the help of an expert.”
Having lived through her own personal and financial challenges, Fiona can relate to many of her clients and is passionate about giving others hope.
“I have a diverse array of clients who are all at different stages in their lives. Many are time-poor, busy executives with young children and they want to spend their money wisely. Others are vulnerable, having been crippled by separation and divorce-induced stress. I can relate to both, and I support people through what can be one of the biggest decisions in their lives.”
Fiona works with a dedicated team of trusted experts, including solicitors, building inspectors, builders, and trades people.
“My clients deserve to have the best team around them who not only give the best advice but emotional support as well. I work with people who ensure the whole process is efficient, cost effective and stress-free - they help take the hassle and stress out of buying a home.”
One of Fiona’s greatest passions is helping people gain the clarity they need to move forward to a happy and bright future.
“I believe property is a fantastical vehicle to create wealth and a well-executed property strategy can bring financial freedom. For me, this isn’t work. I get to show up and help people, and I get such joy doing it.”

The latest kitchen trends of 2022.
Collaroy Kitchen Centre knows a thing or two about what’s hot in kitchen design. Beaches COVERED. caught up with them to get the scoop.
2022 has brought curves to the kitchen in a big way, with gentle curves, soothing colours and natural stone and wood, creating an almost organic feel. These are working together to create a free-flowing style of kitchen that is “almost” minimalist.
John and Helle Olsen, owners of Collaroy Kitchen Centre, have seen their share of kitchen styles come and go. As experts in the business, they know what's needed to include in your next kitchen renovation.
CURVES AND ARCHES
All those straight lines that we worked so hard for in 2020 now need to be bent. Sexy curves are gracing all aspects of our kitchens. Scalloped Islands and corner-free stone tops create a smooth, sultry space. If you can throw in an arched wall somewhere, you have nailed it!
TIMBER LINING BOARDS
These relatively inexpensive textured timber panels are huge. They create a slatted, bubbled or scalloped effect and can be used absolutely anywhere. Ceilings, cupboard doors, kitchen island and walls, it doesn’t matter where you put them. It is simply imperative that you put them somewhere.
GLAZED TILE SPLASHBACKS
A modern twist on the subway tile, these small glazed tiles have an uneven, shiny finish so they throw light in interesting ways.
THE COLOUR ‘GREIGE’
Say goodbye to white cupboards. Somewhere between grey and beige, you’ll find 'greige'. This neutral tone will be the base of many Insta-kitchen. Subtle green tones are also coming in hot with natural green stone replacing the classic while marble.
DECORATIVE METAL HANDLES
Diamond cut brushed brass handles provide a sophisticated twist on an industrial style.
WINDOW NOOKS
Custom cabinetry can help to make a feature of your kitchen window while providing extra seating.
FLOATING SHELVES
Say goodbye to cupboard doors. Floating shelves are where the modern kitchen is at now. This trend looks super effective for those that have nothing to hide!

DESIGNING YOUR OUTDOOR HOME OASIS
Spring is here, and we’re starting to think about our outdoor living spaces. Whether you’re a seasoned designer or just getting started, our resident experts in backyard entertaining are here with some tips for creating the perfect outdoor living space that’s perfect for entertaining friends and family.
LET’S START WITH YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE.
Your backyard is a place to relax, unwind, and enjoy life. It can be a sanctuary that helps you decompress after a long day at work or school. So when you’re planning it out, make sure that it’s not just functional but also fun!
When it comes to outdoor spaces, there’s no onesize-fits-all approach. Your backyard is as unique as your personality, so we want to help you create a space that suits your needs.
DECORATE WITH POTS
The Pot Warehouse’s experts say the next big trend in pots this spring is the “Cluster of Three.” It involves placing three pots in varying heights – when the right plants are placed in each pot, it becomes a statement focal point.
STATEMENT POTS
If you're looking for a wow factor in your outdoor space, consider adding a statement pot. Maria from The Pot Warehouse suggests that these work on their own and do not need to be clustered with other pots. They can have a plant in them or not depending on the location and type of pot. If you're unsure about what you want, going for a classic colour and shape is the best place to start, allowing the plant to add a lushness to your home.
CUSTOM FURNITURE AND FITOUT
Spring is the perfect time to create a signature Timber outdoor living space. It’s the perfect time to enjoy feature elements and textures across a lounging or dining space. Think timber screens that weather and age over time, creating a natural backdrop to your entertaining space.

Heating your pool
Who wouldn’t enjoy a warm dip on a hot Summer day? But diving into an icy pool is far from appealing. There are three main ways to heat a pool: gas, electric heat pump and solar. But which one is the best value while being good for the environment?
GAS
PRO: Great for small pools that are used occasionally.
CON: You have to plan ahead which takes the spontaneity out of an impromptu swim.
ELECTRIC HEAT PUMP
PRO: Efficient and cheap to install, if sized correctly, the desired temperature of your pool can be guaranteed.
CON: Running costs, electricity is expensive, unless linked with a Solar system.
SOLAR
PRO: Solar heating uses the least amount of energy, which makes it the cheapest to run. It also secures a constant temperature.
CON: You need sunshine. But that’s not a huge problem during or a hot Australian Summer!
OUR VERDICT
SOLAR. IT IS COST EFFECTIVE, RELIABLE AND KIND TO THE ENVIRONMENT.
Solar Pool heating has come a long way. Gone are the days of glueing rubber strip matting to your roof that is inefficient, damaging to the roof and a potential Cockatoo playground.
Solarpro has been warming our pools for over a decade because life is too short for a cold swimming pool. They have all the latest solar technology that uses the least amount of energy therefore, the cheapest to run. A fantastic cost-effective way to heat a pool.
THE LATEST IN EFFICIENCY ADVANCEMENTS
Heat pumps are the latest in Solarpro’s Smart Solar technology. Solarpro’s pool heating system allows you to combine a solar power system with a heat pump and control the energy flow to it. What was once a noisy, expensive way to heat your pool is now almost silent and can be free to run when combined with the correctly designed solar PV system powering it.
Solartherm’s enclosed solar pool heating panels is the top choice for a stand-alone solar pool heating system. These panels can substantially expand your swimming season and take up about half the roof space of other solar pool heating systems. They are so energy efficient and compact that they can go on a poolside cabana or garage, or be ground-mounted.
Solarpro has been installing these Australian designed heating panels for nearly a decade. They use 40% less roof space, are windproof, and don’t require holes drilled in your roof.
Solarpro has used its knowledge of pool heating and solar power to develop solutions that can help you use solar energy to cut most of the cost of operating your pool.
So, should you go solar? We think so. Let’s get swimming!

TEAK SUNLOUNGER
Sleek and sophisticated this lounger can be easily moved with all-weather wheels and five reclining settings for total relaxation.
Who needs Bali when you have this. This multi-functional beauty has been uniquely designed to individually recline so you can both face the same way, opposite each other or fully reclined as a wonderful flatbed. It can also be made on legs if you don’t have a space to hang it.
Osier Belle use Sunbrella fabrics which are all water-repellent and guaranteed zero fade for five years. For fully exposed pieces, we’d recommend Osier Belle Shield protection, fabrics which are fully waterproof and can really take anything you throw at them! Covers are removable, washable and the foam is quick drying and will hold its shape for years.
The ultimate outdoor furniture
Quality poolside furniture is truly worth the investment. High street brands simply can’t hack it in the brutal Australian climate. Outdoor furniture, particularly if it is at risk of being exposed to chlorine or salt water needs to be tough otherwise it won’t last the season.
If you’re looking for quality materials and beautiful designs, Osier Belle has what you’re looking for. Their outdoor furniture is designed to withstand our Australian environment as it is sophisticated and comfortable.
Everything they use to make their furniture is the highest quality. From the quick dry foam to the fully waterproof fabrics, beautiful hardwearing, sustainable teak and wicker that simply refuses to fray.
Here are some of our favourite pieces.
LUX DAYBED
This chaise lounge is super elegant. The 1950s design, so full of character, combines with Osier Belles signature luxury and sophistication.

Spas and Plunge Pools
For an efficient solution to pool installation, consider a pre-fabricated swim spa or plunge pool. Spas are an excellent addition to your garden and have the benefit of being used year round.
THEY ARE EVEN GOOD FOR YOU!
The heat, buoyancy and massage work to soothe pain and inflammation. Hydrotherapy is the perfect way to justify your new swim spa!
There are some really cool ways to integrate them into your space. Building them in with quality timber in addition to an entertainment space allows the spa to sit seamlessly in your garden.
Splashes Spa World in Brookvale have over 25 years experience and an extensive array of spas, swim spas and plunge pools. They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and their pricing is very competitive. Their
products come with a lifetime of support so you’ll never be caught out with a cold, bubble-less spa.
Oasis Plunge Pools are a great, straightforward pool. These revolutionary plunges are truly remarkable. They come pre-plumbed with the required pump, filter and equipment. All you need to do is plug it in, and you'll be swimming the day it arrives.
You can install them almost anywhere, even 60 centimetres underground for a sunken finish. They clad beautifully or you have the option to build in.
This is a great and quick way to live the resort life this season.

When
When thinking about colours for your pool, it is important to bear in mind that the painted pool colour will change once the pool has been filled with water. This is dependent on many factors including time of day, quality of light (overcast or sunny), surrounding architectural and landscape features, as well as pool water chemistry. There are some great articles on the LUXAPOOL® website that discuss what to expect when working with colour underwater, along with tips
