Orange City Life is grateful to the following sponsors for their ongoing support over many years. In return, we ask you to please support them as often as you’re able.
There’s really not enough hours in the week when you add up work and family time, the neverending chores and housework, plus trying to exercise and maybe a little downtime. I’ve long thought the workday/weekend ratio is o and longingly remember the brief six months – two decades ago –- that I enjoyed a four-day working week!
Here’s a little shoutout to my son Leo, who caught his very rst sh on the weekend. Both my boys have caught the shing bug and judging by their enthusiasm it looks like we’re destined to spend many hours and hours by or on the water in the future. I now nd them watching shing highlight reels on YouTube or researching the feeding habits of dierent sh varieties online.
Congratulations to the committee and all the volunteers behind the Orange Running Festival for an extremely successful weekend. A record crowd of runners tackled the eight events this year and given all the good feedback I’ve heard, I imagine it’s only going to get bigger! We have a spread of photos and a report of the event on pages 26 and 27.
And this coming weekend it’s the bike riders’ turn, with the Orange Mountain Bike Club hosting up to 300 riders for Round One of NSW State Gravity Enduro Series at the Glenwood State Forest Trails on Saturday and Sunday, March 11–12. Good luck!

ORANGE CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF ASTLEY CUP THIS JUNE
Orange High School alumni from near and far are preparing to celebrate 100 years of the Astley Cup this June.
Founded in Dubbo in 1923, the Astley Cup is a unique multi-sports competition played each year between Dubbo College (formerly Dubbo High School), Bathurst High School and Orange High Schools, and is one of the longest-running sporting competitions in Australia.
While the 1923 competition saw Dubbo High compete only against the local Sacred Heart College, Orange and Bathurst high schools have contested every competition since.
“Lawrence Astely, he was a businessman in Dubbo and he instigated a competition between Dubbo High and the Catholic school up there,” said Lynne Middleton, former Orange High School teacher and head of the steering committee planning the 100th anniversary activities here in Orange.
“For public education, this is absolutely unheard of — that a competition has been going for that long between three schools,” said Lynne, who was the sports coordinator at Orange High
school from 1988 until she retired in 2013. “That was the golden years!” recalled Lynne enthusiastically. “In 1990 we won it and lost in 2002. So we had 12 years of continuous, uninterrupted wins and that is the longest anywhere in the history of the cup!”
There have been only four times the competition has not been held since 1923: 1924, 1932, 1941 and 2020.
The competition features only eight sports: athletics and tennis (mixed); then girls’ netball, hockey and soccer; and boys’ league, basketball and soccer.
Each sport is worth 100 points under the unique point-scoring system outlined in the Astley Cup constitution.
But the sports played have changed over the years, said Lynne. Rugby league has replaced rugby union and girls’ soccer used to be girls’ softball.

“The other two schools decided we weren’t going to have softball any more because we were winning games by like 21 to nil,” said Lynne.
But softball will be back this year as one of the sports in a program of ‘old boy’ and ‘old girl’ events as part of the planned centenary celebrations ahead of the first Astley Cup round in Orange on June 15 and 16.
“So the two days prior to that we have ‘old boy’ and ‘old girl’ games to follow the same program,” Lynne said.
“We have people like Darren Gersbach running tennis, we have Toot Keegan and her daughter running the netball… di erent people with a background in Astley Cup to run these games so there’s tennis, netball, basketball, mixed soccer, and we are looking at running a program for rugby league, modified for older players.”
Orange High School will be running school tours for returning ex-students and there will be
a static display of Astley Cup memorabilia and photographs from the past 100 years
And on Friday, June 16, there will be an Astley Cup 100 years celebration dinner at the Orange Ex-Services’ Club for people to catch up and relive old Astley Cup victories. Tickets for the dinner are now available from the club.
“We are encouraging ex-students to come back and get involved over those five days,” said Lynne, who added that she knows of a number of school reunions being planned to coincide with the Astley Cup centenary.
“We want to get the word out there. We know of people Australia-wide that would love to know about this, that have played Astley Cup; If you’ve played it, it’s in your blood!”
Lynne said that anyone who wants to know more about the Astley Cup centenary celebrations should get in touch with her via the Orange High School o ce on 6362 3444.

Happy 50th W ies!
On Tuesday, March 7, there was a super special 50th birthday celebration for someone… or somewhere we all know well; our local Woolworths supermarket!
Past and present sta of the Anson Street Woolworths came together on Tuesday to celebrate 50 years since the store, Orange’s first supermarket, opened on Wednesday, March 7, 1973.
Many Orange locals remember the day the supermarket opened its doors and the many changes the building has been through over the decades since.
While he’s not quite the longest-standing member of sta , produce assistant, Chris Fuller, has spent an impressive 39 years at the store, starting out as a “trolley boy” at 17.
“There’s been a lot of history, a lot of changes over the years, lots of refurbishments,” Chris said.
“When it got built there were two houses that got knocked down, then they started building in ‘72 and opened in March ‘73.”
The biggest change, Chris says, has been the growing rate of technological advances available in the store.
“It’s all technology these days,” he said, “I remember the
price gun, and having to manually weigh all the produce. And now there’s the self-service machines too.”
The interior appearance of the supermarket has also changed over the years.
“There was a big refurbishment in the late ‘80s, then one in ‘99 and another little one in 2007, then the last one was in 2018,” Chris said.
For Chris, his employment for Woolies has also meant the development of friendships, and one friend, in particular, feels more like family to him.
“My mate, Ian has been there for 42 years, we’re like brothers now.”
Prior to Woolworths being built in Orange, a Woolworth Variety store which included a cafe was located in Summer Street.
Past and present sta celebrated the big day on Tuesday, March 7 with a party in the store’s upstairs sta room, which was decorated with old photographs of the store and advertising from when it first opened.
Smiths chips for one cent and ice cream 39 cents a gallon. Oh, how times have changed!

Orange has experienced incredible growth in the visitor market, which has doubled in value since 2017 and now brings in $500 million each year to the local economy.
But the new general manager of Orange360, Ned Sweetapple, believes there are abundant opportunities to consolidate and grow the industry yet.
Appointed to helm the regional destination marketing body in December last year, Ned brings a wealth of marketing and management experience to the role that spans tourism, hospitality, performing arts and sporting industries, and agribusiness.
Having grown up on a cattle and sheep property between Canowindra and Mandurama, Ned said she jumped at the opportunity to promote an area that’s very

close to her heart.
“About 6 or 7 years ago, we moved the family out of Sydney and it kind of felt like coming home,” said Ned, who was working for multinational agribusiness institution Rabobank at the time.
“Coming back to Orange was just a great opportunity to be able to work remotely from Sydney.”
Prior to her role with Rabobank, Ned worked for Ruby Australia, managing their corporate hospitality and sponsorship programs.
“I have always been in and around the space of marketing and sponsorship and events management — Primarily marketing and promoting events to sell tickets and reach customers, but also marketing brands through events,” said Ned.
“Being able to work and head up Orange360, which has a very strong base and has achieved a lot of growth in the last five years with Caddie [former general manager Caddie Marshall] at the helm is an opportunity that I was very excited about.”
While COVID lockdowns and travel restrictions of the past few years hit the tourism industry hard, for Orange the silver lining was that more people started to explore their own backyards, said Ned.
The next challenge for Orange360, she said, will be consolidating that visitor growth and keep giving people a reason to come explore Orange and the central west. “There are opportunities to grow more, really to be able to drive the festivals that are established,” she said. “The challenges are how do we make those bigger? How can we accommodate more people in the town? How can we use those festivals, use what we have here, the fabulous food and wine, how do we use all those products, all those tourism opportunities to really lift the reputation of Orange as an Australian destination, not just an NSW destination.”
Food and wine have long formed the main thrust of Orange’s tourism promotion and it is still an area for which there is strong demand: Tickets for 2023 F.O.O.D. Week signature events — Forage and the Sampson Street Long Lunch — sold out in
just 16 minutes.
But Ned said there are also new opportunities and markets that have the potential to draw people to Orange and more importantly, give people reasons to keep coming back
“There’s a lot of emerging tourism activities in this area that are growing… the art and culture in the region has emerged and is growing our reputation for worldwide exhibitions like at the regional art gallery at the moment. It is something that we really need to capitalise on,” she said.
“Cycling is another huge industry that is very popular and growing in which we have a lot of ability to tap into that market as well.
“You always lead with your greatest strength and our food and wine was the first established and it is still very strong… We have about 30-something cellar doors in Orange and a number of good restaurants, but you can’t do all of them when you come.
“So it’s about making people realise that there’s something new every time.”

Strong community support for local hospice campaign
In the two weeks since the launch of Orange Push for Palliative’s ‘Hospice for Orange’ campaign, there has been an outpouring of support from residents and organisations passionate about their desire for a dedicated palliative care facility for Orange.
“Since we launched our campaign two weeks ago, we have had enormous feedback and approaches from across the community,” said Push for Palliative (P4P) president, Jenny Hazelton.
“But as we move forward buoyed by our community, we know a hospice won’t be possible unless NSW Health commits to
being an integral part of the facility – it’s essential, and the people of Orange deserve a hospice.”
Orange Push for Palliative has done the hard yards since 2016, which has resulted in two designated beds achieved so far in Orange Hospital, Jenny said.
But the recent granting of 12 palliative beds for Tamworth, while a large regional hospital like Orange has just two, remains a ‘bitter pill’ for the people of Orange who are telling OP4P there is a lack of equity in palliative care, she continued.
While continuing their campaign for a local hospice, Orange P4P continues to provide meals and comfort for families who have
a loved one in the two designated beds at Orange Hospital.
And their work has recently been given a welcome injection of funds thanks to a group of women golfers from Duntryleague and an anonymous donor, who handed over cheques for $3,300 to Orange P4P.
Jenny said these donated funds will be used to keep the family fridge in the palliative care area stocked with preprepared meals for families who are spending the final days and hours with loved ones.
“We want to do anything we can to help,” said Duntryleague Golf Club member Gay Stone, after hearing Jenny speak about the

campaign at the club.
“Everyone who was there on the day has an experience of a loved one in palliative care and can really relate to the issue. After hearing Jenny Hazelton speak everyone was buzzing about how important this is for Orange,” she continued.
“Our women golfers at Duntryleague are just so supportive of all the work Orange Push for Palliative is doing to get more beds in Orange Hospital and to build a hospice for our city.”
Orange Push for Palliative meets on the second Wednesday of the month in the West Room at Orange City Library at 5.30pm.
It goes without saying that the more information (including advice) that you have in your decision process, the better the decision made is likely to be. Lawyers are not qualified (or insured!) to provide financial advice.
Together with legal advice, what types of transactions should you seek independent financial advice and/or taxation advice as part of your due diligence of a proposed transaction:
Buying/Selling Business (Asset Protection, Capital Gains Tax, GST, State transfer (Stamp) Duty and taxation matters should be considered)
Sale of property (are there age pension effects if a home is sold and part of those proceeds are invested – ie assets and income test rules)
Leasing canhave significant effects at later stages of a lease such as “make good” clauses that may require very significant redecoration or general make good works to be completed to the premises at the end of a lease term
First home Buyer – Property Tax Option – thisis a financially (cash flow) driven decision. The up front opt-in (or not) decision may have dire consequences if the various scenarios are not thought through ie if a home owner occupier decides to buy and move into another property and keep the first property as an investment property thenthe annual property tax liability is substantially increased and depending on the timing it may end up far exceeding what would have been the up front transfer duty
Family group succession planning (farming or non farming)
A vendor (seller) of a business or property may offer vendor finance to the purchaser to buy the business or property. What are the risks?
Entering into a granny flat type of arrangement with a family member. What effects on the age pension (if any), what happens if the younger generation separate andfamily law becomes an issue, what happens on death of any person to the agreement, can it be reversed if it does not work?
Community title, neighbourhood schemes, strata plans. What are your financial responsibilities going forward.
Entering into debt restructuring or ATO repayment plans. What are the risks of default?
Intra family business/investment dealings. Is it fair? What are the risks involved?
The above are just a few examples where financial and taxation advice, in addition to legal advice, may be significant in the decision making process. There are many more!!

The proposal was two months in the making, Cameron hiring the Orange Civic Theatre for an evening, where James put on an exclusive performance for the couple.
“Say I Do” is a song about love. It tells a story about how two people share a special bond together as a couple, lifting each other up, and making each other complete, ultimately becoming husband and wife,” James said.
Craig Honeysett from Dotted Eight Studios and Dave Smyth from Studio Door Creative were at the theatres to capture the special moment, which has now been immortalised in the music video for the new single.
Released on February, 10 ‘Say I do’ is tipped to become one of the year’s most popular songs for marriage proposals.
“I think they deserve a lot of recognition,” James said of Cameron and Ana’s role in how the music video has been received. “Capturing the real-life proposal just brought the video to life.”
The album, to be released later this year, will include a second part to the song with a single titled, “She said yes” and the music video will be a sequel of sorts to “Say I do”.
Growing up in Orange, James has been playing the guitar since he was eight years old and has regularly shared the stage with his brother, 2023 Toyota Starmaker finalist, Robbie Mortimer.
Following in the footsteps of his father, Peter Mortimer and uncles, Steve and Chris Mortimer, James played professional rugby league for the Many Sea Eagles in reserve grade. He then went on to captain/coach the Belrose Eagles in the Sydney Shield
competition for four years.
But throughout his football never stopped playing music.
“The good thing about the guitar is that you can take it with you,” James said. “It went hand in hand when I was playing footy.”
When he felt the time had come to finish his football career, James turned his focus on his passion for music.
As a songwriter, James takes inspiration from his own life from childhood recollections of growing up in Orange to exploring the joys of fatherhood. The overarching theme of his music is positivity.
Ultimately James hopes his music will elicit positive energy from the listeners and is what’s behind the title of his first single and soon-to-be-released album, Life is Good Today.
His first single was the fourth most downloaded and streamed song on the Play MPE charts and was nominated for the Best Video and Best Song awards at the Dotted Eighth Music Awards in Orange.
“My passion for music and performing is what drives me,” James said. “My kids are my biggest motivation, and I really want to show my family that anything is possible if you put your mind to it, that you can turn your dreams into reality. To share this adventure with them is amazing.”
James’ music is available on Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon.

Discount desexing for our furry friends
We all love our pets: They’re cute, cuddly, and most importantly loyal and loving friends — even family. But with pet ownership comes pet responsibility, which also carries a cost.
And given the rising cost of living, Orange City Council is urging concession card holders to take advantage of their annual desexing initiative that o ers a massive discount to desex cats and dogs.
The annual program, aimed at minimising stray animals and unwanted litters of kittens, is funded by Council and conducted at Mulberry Lane Vet Hospital in Lords Place.
Eligible concession card holders living in the Orange LGA can get their pets desexed, microchipped and receive a lifetime registration, all for only $69.
Orange City Council will begin taking bookings from Tuesday, March 14 with a limit of one discounted procedure per household.
Veterinary surgeon, Dr Judith Carney of Mulberry Lane Vet Hospital spoke to Orange City Life about the risks associated with not desexing pets, and the issues that stray animals can pose.
“Stray cats are an issue because they’re a threat to the wildlife, and they get into fights, and there’s a nasty disease called feline AIDS, and 1 in 5 in NSW carries this disease, which is untreatable. And the trouble is it’s passed on from cat fights. A stray cat can come into your yard, and it can pass it on to your pet cat. So, it’s very important,” Dr Carney explained.
“Stray dogs can be an absolute menace. You don’t know their temperament; they could be aggressive. They’re bred to be owned by someone to take care of them, so they’re fed wrong.”
There aren’t only risks associated, there are also important health benefits associated with desexing pets as well.
“The advantage to desexing a dog before twelve months is that they’re clinically less likely to develop mammary tumours and a nasty disease called Pyometra which is an infection of the uterus and you’re preventing unwanted puppies,” Dr Carney said.
“In terms of desexing cats, it’s really the same thing –unwanted kittens.”
Last year about 19 dogs and 13 cats were desexed under the program however there were more places available.
Orange Deputy Mayor, Councillor Gerald Power urged people to take advantage of this opportunity.
“This is an important initiative that will help prevent unwanted litters and reduce the number of stray animals in our area,” Cr Power said
Funding is limited and will be allocated on a firstin basis. Bookings and payments are to be made at Council’s Customer Service Counter prior to the procedure.
“It’s not just about helping animals – it’s about helping people – helping concession card holders who might be struggling,” Dr Carney concluded.

OCL’s Volunt r of the Month — Miche e Bourke
Orange City Life is proud to be able to award our first ‘Volunteer of the Month’ to Michelle Bourke of Blayney, who will receive a $100 gift voucher thanks to Ashcroft’s IGA.
The Volunteer of the Month is just a small way for us to say ‘thank you’ to the many people in our community who go out of their way to help or volunteer their time to make their community a better place to live.
There are so many small deeds that often go unnoticed but make a huge di erence in the lives of others, which is why we were taken with the kind heart of Michelle Bourke.
We have received many worthy nominations, which we will keep in the running for our next ‘Volunteer of the Month’ but please keep sending in your nominees.
“I wish to strongly recommend Ms Michelle Bourke of Blayney,” writes Angela O’Callaghan.
I first became aware of Michelle’s generosity when I was asked to be the celebrant for the funeral of Blayney resident, Max Kandlbauer, who died on 26 January 2023.
“Michelle and Max first met by chance while waiting
Starting Medicine at 40.MEDICINE AT 40
for their orders at the bakery in Blayney about twelve years ago. From there, a close friendship developed between Max, his devoted partner Margaret, and Michelle.
“Margaret does not drive. Hence, when Max was diagnosed with cancer, about a year later, it was Michelle who drove him to all of his appointments, including visits to specialists and chemotherapy.”
Throughout several years of treatment, Michelle continued to be an amazing support to Max and Margaret.
“She drove hundreds of kilometres during Max’s illness to ensure he received all the medical care possible,” continues the nomination.
“When Max was in hospital on several occasions, Michelle regularly took Margaret to visit him. In his last weeks of life, which Max was able to spend at home, Michelle continued to be a tower of strength to the family. She visited daily and successfully supported Margaret and Max to ensure the last days of Max’s life were as comfortable as possible.
“Michelle Bourke certainly is an unsung local hero.”
Do you know someone who goes out of their way to make life better in our community?
It could be a friend, neighbour, colleague, committee member or co-worker — we want to hear from you!
To nominate a person you deem worthy for our Volunteer of the Month, send us their contact information along with details of their good deed, and they will be in the running to be rewarded with a $100 gift voucher from Ashcroft’s IGA. Write to us at Suite 3, 241 Lords Place, Orange NSW 2800, email us at reception@oclife.com.au with the subject line “Volunteer of the Month”, or drop your nomination into our o ce.

THE GOOD ENOUGH Parent PRIORITIES
with EMILY THOMPSON
After experiencing something truly traumatic this week I’ve had to reassess my priorities.
You see, the electrical wiring in my car needs replacing, but there is none in Australia to replace it with, so I was left to choose between airbags, air conditioner and my beloved car horn.
I don’t know if you’ve ever driven down Peisley Street at 8.50am, but doing this without the ability to honk at other drivers has left me seriously considering whether or not I actually need airbags. The good news is that in 2-3 weeks I won’t need an aircon, being autumn in Orange. Still, I chose safety.
Spurred by my very adult-centric life improvement, I decide to embark on more self-development. Unfortunately, I make the mistake of asking Miss Eight and Miss 14 how they think I can do better in life. Like all parents of teens and tweens I’ve realised the best time to talk to them is when I’m holding them captive. I.e. in the car during the morning school run.
“Stop speeding up at orange lights mum. At school they taught us that orange means ‘slow down and prepare to stop’. But you hit the accelerator like a race car driver,” Miss Eight says, as I speed up ever so slightly to make it through the Sale/Summer Street intersection on our time-honoured Tuesday morning “there’s no bread and the canteen’s closed so let’s grab cheese and bacon rolls from the Summer Centre bakery on the way to school’ run. I mean yes, but we DO have airbags…
“I have a list,” Miss 14 says from the passenger seat next to me as she opens “notes” on her phone. There actually
is a list! I pause briefly to admire her organisation.
“First, stop telling me you have an important reason for driving me to school instead of letting me walk with my friends, when that reason is simply that you want me to run in and grab you a mocha from Bill’s Beans,” Miss 14 reads.
I sip the co ee that the lovely Carter handed her six minutes ago and avoid eye contact as she continues. “You’ve been talking about buying a new car for six months, but the only two cars you have looked at were a hotdog van and a prison transport vehicle that you said was ‘perfect’ for doing the school run. Be sensible for once!”
I ignore this, knowing she only wants me to get a new car so she gets my old one when she starts driving. I still kinda want the prison one. I mean, imagine road trips with children separated into individual cells!
“Lastly,” she interrupts, “You’ve been really busy with work lately. I don’t remember the last time I saw you play computer games, read a book or go out with your friends. You need to chill out too, Mum.”
This hits home for me. I’ve always made sure the girls see me enjoying myself, as I never want them to think that being a wife and mother means losing yourself. But I realise that for the last few weeks, I have in fact lost myself and prioritised work and my family’s needs over my own.
“Also, stop singing in the car!” pipes up Miss Eight, keen to jump in on the critiquing.
I turn up Kate Bush and sing along at the top of my lungs all the way to school. After drop-o , I arrange for Hubby to work from home tomorrow and plan to take the afternoon o to read. Perfect.

CBC BANK EMPLOYEES 60-YEAR REUNION

Twelve of the former employees of the Orange Branch of the Commercial Banking Company (CBC) enjoyed a social get together at Duntryleague on Saturday, March 4.
Each held a variety of roles within the branch in the late 60’s and early 70’s. The day was about continuing their social activities from when they worked together. Some of the ladies had travelled from as far as Dubbo, Sydney and Port Macquarie to enjoy the time with their former workmates.

As they watch, an elderly lady walks into the strange silver doors and the doors close. The father and son watch as the numbers go up, and then back down. When the doors open, a beautiful young woman walks out. The father leans over and whispers to the son, “Son, go get your mother!”
Which idiot?
A proud and confident genius makes a bet with an idiot. The genius says, “Hey idiot, every question I ask you that you don’t know the answer, you have to give me $5. And if you ask me a question and I can’t answer yours will give you $5,000.” The idiot says, “Okay.” The genius then asks,
“How many continents are there in the world?” The idiot doesn’t know and hands over the $5. The idiot says, “Now it’s my turn to ask: what animal stands with two legs but sleeps with three?” The genius tries and searches very hard for the answer but gives up and hands over the $5000. The genius says, “Dang it, lost. By the way,
what was the answer to your question?” The idiot hands over $5.
New broom
A company in need of a shakeup, hires a new hard-nosed CEO to get the place back into ship-shape fashion. The new boss is determined to rid the company of all deadwood and no-hopers. On his first tour of the facilities, he notices a young man leaning on a wall wearing casual clothes, chewing gum, and texting with his mobile phone. The “new broom” sees his chance, to show everyone that he means business!
He walks up to the nonchalant-looking teenager, and asks: “And how much money, do you make in a month, young man?”
Undaunted, the young man looks at him and smiles, replying: “Ohh, I make about $2000, give or take...Why?”
The new CEO then very deliberately gets his chequebook out of his pocket, writes a personal cheque for $2000, and hands it to the lad who gives him a quizzical look. The new chief then says loudly and
with feeling: “Well, here’s a month’s pay, you can cash it at any bank, now get out of here now, and don’t come back!” The young man leaves with the cheque, shaking his head.
Feeling pretty good about how his first firing went, the CEO looks around the room at the staff and says: “He’s no great loss, didn’t look like he ever did a day’s work here!”
With a sheepish grin, one of the workers smiles and answers: “You’re

ORANGE RUNNING FESTIVAL A RUN AWAY SUCCESS!
The Orange Running Festival was held on the weekend, featuring distances from 1 mile to a full marathon. Despite the stormy weather, the event drew a massive crowd!
I’m here to tell you, I’m not a runner but I did compete in the Community Mile and had a great time! The previous federal government supported the event with a $35,000 grant.
A big thank you to Anthony Daintith and all the Festival organisers, volunteers and sponsors for delivering such an outstanding event! I’ll definitely be back next year!

It was also great to welcome Founder of Yellow Brick Road, Mark Bouris, to town.

FLOOD MITIGATION URGENTLY NEEDED
As the recovery from the recent storms and floods continues, people across the region are asking “How do we stop this happening again?”
Molong has had three major flooding events in the past 12 months. It can’t go on like this.
The toll on residents’ health and finances is simply too high.
One thing that the NSW Government can do is get the Molong Creek rail bridge raised or moved. This may not prevent future flooding but it would certainly greatly lessen the impacts.
It’s no good for government to simply feel the community’s pain and move on. This issue must be addressed. The future of Molong depends on it.
I would encourage all candidates at the upcoming NSW election to commit to resolving the issue with the bridge and also carrying out other necessary mitigation work along the creek.
Another thing that the NSW Government could do is commit to removing the traffic islands in Hill Street (along the highway opposite the REC Ground) and levelling the gradient of the road.
As things stand, the highway is built up higher than the gutters. This combined with traffic islands is creating a mini dam which is making any flooding much worse.
Currently the water is running down Hill Street and
coming in from Gidley Street well before any water from the creek gets there. You can still see the dirt and gravel that recently washed into the islands. Phil Davis (pictured) and other local residents have had enough. They need action.
Some relatively simple road works and the removal of the traffic islands would greatly alleviate the situation. An insurance assessor has already looked at the road and said the level is too high.
I have raised this issue with the Premier and NSW Minister for Regional Transport Sam Farraway but haven’t had a response. It’s time to get cracking on solutions rather than hoping the next storm won’t be as bad as the last one.
MY TWO CENTS
One of the important things about being an independent is not being told how to vote by a political party.
There is a growing expectation in the community that MPs will say what they actually think and not just follow a party line because it’s good for their career prospects. There just isn’t enough of it in politics.
Giving up my numerous shadow ministries meant taking a significant pay cut but I’m now free to turn an independent eye to any issue before parliament or our area.
Here are a few issues on the agenda this week:
• I won’t be supporting the government’s proposed tax increases on superannuation. If they were planning to move the super goal posts it should have been stated before the election.
• I do support the federal government’s National Reconstruction Fund because it will benefit the regions.
• I don’t think the NSW Nationals/NSW Government should have promised (and advertised) to make NSW mobile blackspot free at the last state election. There are still plenty of mobile phone blackspots around and this was a promise that was highly unlikely to ever be fulfilled. You don’t hear much about that promise these days. No wonder people get cynical about the major parties.
• The level of both state and federal road funding is clearly not where it should be. Recent state funding announcements will only have a minimal impact. The backpedalling on the Great Western Highway by the federal government is also very concerning. The $2 billion that the previous federal government and I secured for the project needs to be released and rolled out.

Easy couscous salad:
What about if I told you that you can make a delicious meal to fill your family and friends up, not even turning the stove on? I don’t know about you, but that seems like winning to me!
Moroccan couscous has been a musthave in my pantry ever since I visited the country over a decade ago. It’s one of those super versatile ingredients like rice and pasta, that I like to surprise my family with. You can use it as a main, as a side, or even for a salad, like I’m going to suggest here today.
A reader recently asked me: “How hard is it to cook couscous?” Well, I believe it is one of the easiest ingredients you can use in your kitchen. On top of that, it is really cheap and very, very fast for a quick fix during the week! The only trick is to have the perfect amount of boiling liquid per amount of couscous. As always I recommend, look at your packaging, they
will give you the information right there.
Couscous is a staple throughout the North African cuisines of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania and Libya. It’s an amazing source of fibre, which is good for you in a lot of ways. It can stop your blood sugar from spiking and can keep you fuller longer. It also can help lower cholesterol, which can reduce your chances of heart disease.
Ok, so what do you need at home? You just need a kettle, a bowl with a kitchen spoon to mix ingredients, and a chopping board with a knife. Trust me this is the perfect recipe to do with your kids, they will love the fact that the couscous grows in the container when it absorbs the liquid.
STEPS AND SUGGESTIONS TO FOLLOW:
1. Wash, peel, and chop all the vegetables the same size you are going to use. This week there is no recipe really, use your creativity depending on what you like or what’s in season.
2. Turn the kettle on with water.
3. Open a tin of tuna in extra virgin olive oil. Drain it from the oil with a colander (I like to use tuna in order to add more omega-3 to our family diet).
4. Cook the couscous and let it rest. When ready, season well and mix all the ingredients together. You can add herbs on top, heaps of acidity, or chilli if that is your thing.
5. Serve it for lunch or dinner. Or even do a batch cook for your work lunches. Trust me, you’ll be in heaven once you finish one of these salads!
TIPS ON HOW TO COOK COUSCOUS?
1. Tip the couscous into a Chinese takeaway container and pour over a splash of extra virgin olive oil (stir well with a spoon). Then add the boiling water just enough to cover it (you’ll see the ratio in the package anyway).
2. Cover with a lid and leave for 5-10 mins until the couscous is soft.
3. Flu the couscous up with a fork and season well with salt and pepper if you like. The couscous is now ready to serve. Enjoy!

FREE COMMUNITY EVENT ‘CULTURED’ BRINGS CHAMBER MUSIC TO CIVIC SQUARE
The Orange Chamber Music Festival’s free community music, arts and heritage event Cultured will be held in the Civic Square this Saturday 11 March, supported by Orange City Council, Create NSW and the Orange Regional Arts Foundation.
Orange City Council’s Services Policy Committee Chair, Cr Mel McDonell says a series of performances will be held throughout the day at the North Court, Orange City Library, Orange Regional Gallery, Orange Regional Museum and the South Court by local and visiting musicians.
“If you aren’t familiar with chamber music or simply want to enjoy beautiful classical music, this is a great opportunity for members of the community to experience chamber music of the highest calibre in Orange’s vibrant cultural precinct,” Cr McDonell said.
“I encourage everyone to enjoy the community atmosphere of the event and celebrate the city’s vibrant cultural scene at Cultured 2023.”

This year, the celebrations will include:

LEE STINSON AND COREY WEDLOCK SOAR TO GOLDEN EAGLE VICTORY
Orange’s Lee Stinson and partner Corey Wedlock have claimed victory at the 2023 Golden Eagle Classic Pairs Tournament.
The hotly contested four-day tournament concluded on Friday, March 3, with Lee and Corey defeating 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medalists Carl Healey and Ben Twist, 22-12.
The standard of bowls displayed on the Orange City Bowling Club greens was extraordinary with a record number of state, national and international bowls champions competing for a share of the $20,000 prize money.
“Lee, Corey, Ben and Carl, it’s undisputed that you have all played phenomenal bowls this week and regardless of who is crowned the champion, it’s been amazing watching you all bowl,” the club posted on it’s Facebook page the morning of the finals.
On Wednesday, March 1, approximately 150 people attended Orange City Bowling Club for the inaugural Sportsman’s Dinner, a new addition to the Golden Eagle Classic Pairs bowls tournament.
Legendary Australian rugby league prop forward Steve “Blocker” Roach was the guest speaker at the dinner, which was MC’d by comedian Justin Karcher.

ORANGE FILM SOCIETY PRESENTS, EMILY: THE IMAGINATION BEHIND WUTHERING HEIGHTS
Emily tells the imagined life of one of the world’s most famous authors, Emily Brontë. The film stars Emma Mackey as Emily, a rebel and misfit, as she finds her voice and writes the literary classic ‘Wuthering Heights’. Emily explores the relationships that inspired her – her raw, passionate sisterhood with Charlotte (Alexandra Dowling) and Anne (Amelia Gething); her first aching, forbidden love for Weightman (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) and her care for her maverick brother Branwell (Fionn Whitehead), whom she idolises.
Frances O’Connor makes her directorial debut with Emily, from her own original screenplay. The film also stars Adrian Dunbar and Gemma Jones.
See Emily at the Odeon 5 Cinema: Sunday, March 12 (early evening screening, check local listings); and Wednesday, March 15 (mid-morning screening, check local listings)

CULTURED: arts and music come together in the Civic Square
Cultured is a free community music, arts and heritage celebration happening in the Orange Civic Square this Saturday, March 11.
First introduced at the Orange Chamber Music Festival in 2021, Cultured is a family-friendly event that combines art, music, culture and heritage while making classical music accessible to people of all ages. The all-day music program planned for Saturday, March 11, includes performances by local and visiting musicians at the North Court, Orange City Library, Orange Regional Gallery, Orange Regional Museum and the South Court.
The final performance of the day will be a musicaltheatrical interactive performance of Camille Saint-Saens’ humorous musical suite Carnival of the Animals. The performance will see the Orange Regional Conservatorium chamber music academy partnered with local theatre company The Pinnacle Players, who will add narration and impersonations. It is a performance the whole family can enjoy together, Carmen said.
“It’s going to be an open-air orchestral/theatre performance, outside in the South Court and we’re
hoping to have a lot of families coming and sitting on the stairs and kids will be able to run around,” she said.
“It is a joy to be able to provide the community with diverse free performances, with something for the whole family.”

Described as an exhilarating performer with faultless technique and fearless command of the piano, Konstantin has performed under the baton of distinguished conductors including Vladimir Spivakov, Dmitry Liss, Tugan Sokhiev, Nicholas Milton and Alexandr Vedernikov.
For Orange, Konstantin has prepared a programme spanning 250 years from the brilliance of French Baroque composer Rameau to the fiery virtuosity of Liszt culminating with the grand ‘La Valse’ by Ravel.
The major work in the second half will be Prokofiev’s ground-breaking Sonata No.8 - the final one he ever wrote and one of the most dazzling pieces written for the piano.

James Sheahan students set to Rock, March 17–18
James Sheahan Catholic High School’s are bringing one the world’s favourite rock theatricals, We Will Rock You – the Musical, to the Orange Civic Theatre on March 17 and 18.
Written by legendary rock band, Queen, and comedian/author/playwright Ben Elton, We Will Rock You tells the story of a dystopian world 300 years in the future and the young bohemians desperate to “break free” from global corporate domination of Killer Queen and finally bring back the music.
Featuring Queen’s best-loved hits, including ‘We Are The Champions’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ and ‘Radio Ga Ga’, We Will Rock You is guaranteed to blow your mind.
“The kids are very excited, it’s coming up quickly and they’re all working really hard,” James Sheahan teacher and show producer, Emily Bell, said.
Student’s normally produce a show every second year, but COVID cancelled their last planned performance, she said
“So this is our first one for four years,” explained Emily, “They’re very excited to get back on the scene and have a live audience.”

Orange’s newest suburb to deliver affordable and tasteful diversity of housing
Orange City Council and NSW Government-owned developer Landcom have signed an agreement that will see a new suburb created on the eastern edge of Orange.
Located between Dairy Creek Road and the Mitchell Highway, the new 18.56-hectare development will yield between 200 and 230 lots, with 20-30 per cent to be affordable housing for low to moderate-income households.
Signing the Memorandum of Understanding at the site last Wednesday, Orange Mayor, Councillor Jason Hamling said this is a step towards delivering more affordable homes for people to come and live and work in Orange.
“It’s really important, you know, a lot of the councillors went to the last election mentioning housing affordability. Our community strategic plan; the number one thing that came back on that was housing affordability. So we’ve listened and we’re doing something about it,” Cr Hamling said.
“We want to work towards making sure Orange has a place for everyone to live irrespective of their income. Housing affordability is a complex issue that requires a multifaceted response. It can’t be solved overnight but we are on our way.”
Whether the affordable housing will be delivered as rental accommodation, housing to purchase or
a mix of both is yet to be determined.
Orange City Councilor General Manager David Waddell said the next step is for Council staff to work with Landcom to master plan and design the site.
“With Landcom, we’ll effectively design and build a suburb that will then have 20 to 30 per cent affordable housing within it… that will be available to a certain demographic, a certain income level of people coming to Orange or living in Orange,” Mr Wadell said.
“In terms of the city, what we like to see — this is an entrance site of the city, we would like to see a pretty tasteful looking suburb with a mixture of housing — We’ve done the same in Shiralee. We want to see small houses, big houses, perhaps a couple of unit developments, so that you don’t just end up with a monoculture of vanilla-looking houses.
“We’d like to think that families live here, old people live here, young people live here, et cetera, and Landcom’s pretty good at that.”
Under the agreement, Council provides the land while Landcom will finance the development, something Council would not be able to do alone, Mr Waddell said.
Landcom CEO Alexander Wendler added that this agreement is just the beginning of a longer-term relationship with Orange City Council.
“A broader partnership you know that is not only limited to this site. This is the first one which we will

do investigations on but we really want to expand it to other sites here in this LGA,” Mr Wendler said, adding that addressing housing shortages in the regions is one of the company’s priorities.
Since 1976 Landcom has delivered more than 100,000 homesites across 240 projects within NSW, he said. But they plan to deliver at least another 25,000 home sites by 2030 with 40 per cent of our portfolio in Regional NSW.
The next steps in the development will be to assess the site for access to water, sewer, power and other services, and then commence work on rezoning, Mr Waddell said, but it is anticipated that
the first sod could be turned as early as next year.
“Well, the MOU actually says we need to get stuck in pretty quickly,” Mr Wadell said. “It’s a very good site, this one. It’s got water and sewer services quite close by. It’s on two major roads. It’s flat, so it’s not really a constrained site. I think we can get into this very quickly.”
When pressed on what the new suburb would be named, Mr Waddell deferred the question to Mayor Hamling.
“I think we’re putting the cart before the horse here,” the Mayor said. “Let’s just get on with building it and then we’ll talk about names later on.”

‘Willow Park’ under the hammer for first time in more than a century
Privately located in the highly sought-after Errowanbang/ Carcoar district, the 458-hectare (1131-acre) ‘Willow Park’ is sure to draw interest when it goes to auction on Saturday, March 18.
Considered to be one of the most reliable rainfall areas in NSW, the property boasts excellent water security with 23 dams, three springfed permanent and semipermanent creeks, and solar equipped bore with water reticulated throughout the
property for stock, plus another diesel pump on a large dam.
With red basalt and grey loam soils and established pastures of phalaris, cocksfoot, ryegrass and clover, the current owner estimates the carrying capacity at 250 cows or equivalent.
“It’s a pretty nice place; not a lot of country comes on the market down there,” selling agent Brian Cullinane of AWN Orange said.
“It’s been held in that family for, I think about 120 years… It just shows you what good country and what a good place it is, over generations it has stood the test of time.”
Around 50-60 per cent of the land is
arable, Brian said, and there are good stands of yellow box, some white box and apple and gum, plus lots of native species throughout.
‘Willow Park’ is subdivided into 27 paddocks with secure stock-proof fencing and includes an immaculately presented two to three stand shearing shed, numerous storage sheds, two large hay sheds, steel cattle yards, sheep yards and three silos.
There is also a comfortable four-bedroom, two-bathroom home with spacious living areas, an attractive low-maintenance garden and established orchard.
“It’s a very attractive bit of country… and interesting country, in as much as there’s high country and lower country,” Brian said.
“It’s well-treed. It’s got nice plantations on it, which are done very well. The fences are good. Water is particularly good. There’s a very comfortable home and very, very good and very up-to-date woolshed and its location 18 kilometres to the Carcoar Sale yards is something worthy of note.”
‘Willow Park’ is located at 1324 Errowanbang Road, Errowanbang NSW 2791. The property is set to go to auction at 11am Saturday, March 18 at Quest Orange, located on the corner of Kite Street and McNamara Lane.
For more information contact selling agents Brian Cullinane on 0418637338, or Lindsay Fryer on 0428104132.

ORANGE PROSTATE CANCER SUPPORT GROUP
The group’s first meeting for 2023 was in the form of an afternoon tea at Eat Botanic. The meeting was completely informal, so that all the members present could have an open discussion on the future direction of the group in 2023.
Many ideas were presented and discussed. The final format will be finalised at our March meeting. The one item we agreed upon was that the group organise a meeting of all groups, associations or persons that are assisting people who are or have been a ected by cancer meet to let other groups know of their objectives, activities and assistance that they may require.
Our group will contact groups that we have knowledge of, but we ask any group that would like to attend the meeting to contact Charlie on 63611830 or charles.yvonne@bigpond.com. Working together we may be able to achieve more for our members.
At present we are looking at a meeting late April/ May, suggestions on time (day or evening) would be appreciated.
The group’s next meeting will be Tuesday, March 21, At Café Connect, 107 Prince Street Orange at 6pm.
THE robus NOTES with Keith
Rawsthorne
The highlight of our February meeting was guest speaker, Ray Fowler’s talk on the life and engineering feats of Dr Ferdinand Porsche. Ray is a Mechanical Engineer by profession and is passionate about Porsche cars and managed to obtain one in his retirement, only to have it stolen.
Dr Porsche was an Austrian Automotive engineer, whose first car produced in the 1800s was an electric vehicle. The batteries didn’t last long, so he fitted a petrol motor to drive a generator to power the car. Sounds like a modern hybrid.
Porsche also built a 16-cylinder motor which proved a great winner on the race track. He then moved to Volkswagen and became General Manager.
Guest speaker at our March 1 meeting was Raymond Haynes who spoke on his career in AstroPhysics.
Our Tour Director has returned and is in good health, so get organised for a trip to Bathurst (Railway Museum), Stuart Town for lunch, and a tour of the RFDS in Dubbo.

This Friday, March 10, we celebrate one of the more obscure days in the international calendar. This Friday will be International Bagpipe Day. The bagpipes are the avocado of the musical world. You either love them or you hate them. As a redhead with proud Scottish heritage, I must confess that I love the sound of the pipes. There is something about this instrument that warms my heart in strange ways. I know, however, that it is not a love shared by all. I have only tried to play the bagpipes once and I probably won’t ever again! As a string player, I struggle to navigate any instrument that requires me to blow into it. But I do enjoy listening to them. I have many fond memories of the bagpipes that have intersected with key memories in my life. When we were on a family holiday in Scotland as a child, we saw a piper standing alone on a hill, and the sound of the pipes carried out across the moor. A friend played their bagpipes from the summit of a mountain that we had just climbed as a group of university students. When my old pastor, who had a big influence in my life as a young man, retired from his ministry at our church in Tasmania, he was piped out as he left the church. My sisterin-law played her bagpipes out in the fields as the sun was setting at our wedding. Yet despite my love of the bagpipes, there are moments
when it is not quite as appreciated as it could be. This is mostly when they are not being played the way they should be. But just because they are not being played the way they should be, does not mean that they are bad in and of themselves. I have heard someone once talk about the Christian faith in this way, using the image of an instrument not being played the way it should be and saying that Christians too, sometimes play the tune of Jesus beautifully, and sometimes very poorly. But this does not mean that the instrument itself is bad. And what is the tune? Jesus called his followers to a radical ethic of love. He said in Matthew 22:37-38: “And he said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself’.” This is what a Christian is called to do. Sadly though, like the bagpipes being played poorly, followers of Jesus haven’t done this well. But when these words of Jesus are being lived out properly, it is truly beautiful and is like sweet music that stirs your very soul. It shows you how life is meant to be. So if you happen to hear the sound of bagpipes this Friday on the 10th of March, rather than stopping your ears, listen to the music and maybe think about the tune of Jesus.

Mum and Dad
21.8.1961 – 10.3.2003
20 years have passed since you were suddenly taken from us.
The gaping hole your absence left in our lives has never closed. We miss you more with each passing year.
We miss your love, your strength, your unwavering support and your laughter. Your untimely death was so unfair and so pointless. You had so much more life to live and so much more to give.
In the last 20 years you would have seen your children grow, marry and have children of their own. So much was taken from you. And so much was taken from those who loved you, because you are no longer in our lives to share. But you are always in our thoughts and remain deep in our hearts.
Loved and remembered always. Your sister, Vicki.

DAY OF DAYS
With Marion Haydon
I well remember the day my family left the land of my birth and headed to Australia over 60 years ago. We became Australian citizens almost straight away. However, a more important day for me is when I became a citizen of heaven in my youth. We’ve not long celebrated another Australia Day and many people were out and about celebrating what it is to be Australian. We do have much to be thankful for, unlike many other countries. For us living in the present, we do not have control over the past (good or bad) but we can move forward to make it a better place if we hold on to the truths of God’s Word, which we have ready access to.
The Bible speaks of the ‘Day of the Lord’ which is to come, although we don’t know when it will be, but we can prepare well for this future event, in the present because today is the day of salvation. Personally, we can know God’s forgiveness for the past as we put our faith and trust in Him. As we do that we can look forward to this COMING DAY (2 Peter 3:10-13) and celebrate God’s goodness every day.

THUMBS UP to the driver of the green bin rubbish collection. Great job!
THUMBS UP to Australia Post delivery driver Alex for always being so cheerful and polite as he delivers the packages.
THUMBS DOWN to the local swimming pool for the poor maintenance on their indoor disabled bathroom chair that has been out of order for over a month, preventing a wheelchair patron from being able to do their daily swim. It would be greatly appreciated if they made this a priority in being rectified!
A BIG THUMBS UP and ‘thanks’ to Sam at My Tech Mate for setting up a new phone for a Senior person. He even messaged a family member for me with the relevant information for them to contact the phone provider. Great friendly, helpful customer service — thoroughly recommend this business.
THUMBS UP to Luke Steele and the team at Ross Hill Wines. The first time I visited Orange we went to the winery and had such an amazing tasting! The team treated us like VIPs, we got a tour around the winery, had an amazing tasting, and even got a history lesson with the Pistol Packin Mama wine. Will definitely be visiting the winery again!
THUMBS UP to Janelle from Hair on Matthews for her kindness and for being the best hairdresser ever!
THUMBS DOWN Another fool of a driver on our local roads. Obviously having no respect for our hometown roads and the main street of our beautiful town.
A HUGE THUMBS UP to Rachel and all the dialysis nurses at Orange Base Hospital. They are so kind and caring, and Paul the tea man makes the best cuppas.
TIME WARP with
ORANGE AND DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Keeping an eye on rainfall
Orange Post O ce has always been much more than a place to buy stamps. Back in 1957 it was where the city’s rainfall was measured, at 3pm each day. This week’s photo shows deputy postmaster John Fogarty measuring the rainfall with the city’s o cial gauge on 30 December. The gauge recorded 96 points of rain during the previous 24 hours. Rainfall is now measured at Orange Airport.
Photo courtesy CWD Negative Collection, Orange and District Historical Society.
The society holds a working day at Heritage Cottage (148 March Street) each Wednesday from 1 February from 10.30am to 4pm (with a lunch break from 1 –1.30pm). Members are available to answer inquiries at this time.
THUMBS UP to Coles for the best hot cross buns in town!
THUMBS UP to the organisers of the Orange Fun Fair, which was held at the Orange Showground. As a nearby resident, it was great to hear the children laughing and having fun on the rides, and fireworks were absolutely fantastic. Thank you.
THUMBS DOWN to all the people who continue to put bulky waste out after the cut-o dates. Take it back o the footpath. Break it up in the bin or make other arrangements. It makes Orange look like a slum!
THUMBS DOWN to the person who stole my friend’s miniature rose bush that was in a pot while she was in hospital after having a stroke.
THUMBS UP to the guttering man, Brett, who erected a new downpipe for me. A terrific job. Thank you.
