resources to supporting the learning of students with particular needs, we now believe that we must do likewise for students with higher ability levels as demonstrated during the course of their Year 7/8 years. To be effective across all the year group, changes are also being considered for our assessment procedures and our curriculum implementation. We will commence 2011 with a 10-day timetable which has
been identified to assist us with the early stages of preparation for the national curriculum and its emphasis on English, Maths, Science and Humanities. There will be increased periods for these subjects next year. The spread of opportunities for students does test our finite resources and we do need to adjust what we can do from time to time. The College is committed to the alternative pathways at Year 12: VCE and VCAL, the College is committed over the next three years to growing the approach to studies which speaks of excellence for all, not just the most capable. Each student needs to excel at that for which he shows the greatest aptitude. Learning must be enjoyable but it must be also done with commitment. Our students deserve commendation for all that they have contributed to De La Salle in 2010. Some have been involved in national and international competitions; many have tasted success at inter-collegiate and in ACC sports and music competitions; and all the boys in Years 4–9 have gone somewhere and experienced something new for themselves in their camp and extended community service programs. Students in Years 9 and 10 were part of the exchange program with LaSalle Greenhills, Manila, Philippines, where they also worked and helped to construct houses in the Gawad Kalinga program. MAD money purchased the houses which we built. Year 11 students spent two weeks in PNG and helped the De La Salle school at Mainohana to rebuild a kitchen, and a group of Year 12 students, our “Coolies”, are currently part of a massive construction program at Kalimudiman, India. Our ability to help others has few limits. I appreciate the significant work that has been done this year by my Executive in laying the groundwork This photo represents De La with students from the College, Years 7–12. for some even greater improvements in 2011. A school can never stand still; to do so is the beginning of stagnation and no person – student or teacher, can grow in an atmosphere that is frozen in time. (Continued over)
Our Counsellor, Pascal Rohan, explains his role to the Brother Superior who appears a little dubious to proceed further.

At De La, we do have exciting times ahead of us. The teachers are committed to grow the quality of what we do! The teachers are dedicated to ensure that each boy has the opportunity to maximize his potential and develop into the fine young man we all wish him to be. The process varies for each boy. Some teachers are retiring or leaving De La Salle this year. Each of them has made their own significant and personal contribution to the development of the De La Salle community in some way. We thank you for your dedication and commitment to the students and the support you have given to all your colleagues over the years. Your presence and contributions will be missed. To Henry Corcoran who is retiring after many years of service in both St Bede’s College and De La Salle Malvern, we wish good health and happiness. Ad multos Annos. To the support staff in the office, the grounds and the IT department, I express my thanks for all your good work.
To the parents who, through the Parent Network and the great liasion work of Trish Woodman, have engaged so many parents in assisting the College community on so many occasions, I also give thanks. Trish is also responsible for the Alumni reunions when we see approximately 500–600 in any one year — this is a commendable effort. I offer my special gratitude to Mr Peter Riordan. He has steered the ship between the departure of Brother Bill and my arrival. The community is very grateful to you, Peter. To the many priests who have frequently obliged and provided us with the opportunity to celebrate the Mass in a meaningful and purposeful way, we say ‘thank you’. I trust that each family — a part of the De La Salle community — will be blessed with the peace and joy of a new year, full of new challenges and opportunities for growth and fulfillment. Yours in De La Salle, Br Paul Rogers fsc Principal

St Mary of the Cross McKillop Australia celebrated when one of our own was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday 17th October. Radio stations and TV news programs, documentaries and politicians were ever ready to admire and comment on this privileged Australian occasion. The Governor General also wrote an admirable reflection on the event, and I quote: “We admire Mary McKillop’s strength of resolve and action, her intrepid opposition to authority, and her devoted pursuit of social justice in the lives of society’s marginalized and disadvantaged...” As a young boy in the bush, I began my primary education with the Sisters of St Joseph. Those nuns were pedagogical experts, exponents of music education for people who would otherwise have had none, and dedicated to their mission of teaching and giving young people the very best opportunities they could. Those nuns reflected in their lives what Mary McKillop had given them: humility and reserve, courage, mettle and sacrifice. Mary was a woman of great influence who shaped the lives of generations by her desire to give us Catholic primary schools, beyond the cities, in remote parts of Australia. The College joined with the Sisters of St Joseph around Australia in celebrating their new Saint, and Australia’s first. The Catholic Education Office took a large group of young people from Australia to be part of the canonization ceremony and associated celebrations in Rome. Students were invited to nominate and Matthew Taylor (Year 10) was chosen. It was later revealed that Matthew had a great aunt who was a Josephite Sister and died in 2002 at the good age of 102 years. Matthew commented on his experience with the following: “The canonization of St Mary of the Cross was an experience of a lifetime. The atmosphere, excitement and the fantastic people I shared it with
will never be forgotten. The moment when Mary McKillop was declared Saint was one of great rejoicing and celebration. We were filled with feelings of great happiness and a deeper understanding about what the pilgrimage was all about. It fills me with great pride in knowing that I was there for one of the most important days in Australia’s recent history, celebrating the life and work of a great woman.” Mary McKillop stands as a splendid example of the capacity of the Australian spirit. Against great odds, she left home to be a governess on her uncle’s property near Penola, SA. And the rest, as they say, is history. With the support of Father Tennison Woods she founded a religious congregation of teaching Sisters; she was excommunicated from the church; she strove against all the odds of the outback to support her nuns wherever she had sent them. By 1905 they had a huge footprint in rural Australia. As the Governor-General Quentin Bryce wrote: “The ecclesiastical declarations of Mary McKillop’s uncommon goodness and divine miracle-making derive their status and command their respect from these deeply human and modest foundations. And so it is that the official recognition of sainthood has the effect of welcoming, not distancing; appealing, not alienating Mary McKillop.” St Mary of the Cross McKillop, pray for us. Br Paul

Religious Education and Faith Development The College was established for the “human and Christian education of youth, especially the poor”. The era in which we live does not seem to value faith and religious education. Yet, this area of the young men’s development is as crucial as it has always been. From Year 7 to Year 12, from an understanding of our Founder, St John Baptist De La Salle, to the workings of their local parish, from biblical and modern prophets to a deeper understanding of the Eucharist, from a comparison of the Infancy narratives to ethical principles, the Religious Education program of the College tries to prepare our young men for their future as well as give them a greater understanding of our faith. Other activities and opportunities, such as visits to Sacred Heart Mission, Lasallian Service, retreats, prayer, meditation and whole school Masses help the faith development of the young men entrusted to our care. None of this could happen without the commitment and energy of many memYear 8s at their end of year Mass
bers of staff — those who teach RE, Year Level Coordinators, Homeroom teachers, College Chaplain Mrs Joan Ferguson, Mr Des Calleja, Lasallian Youth Minister, as well as the creative genius of Ms Mary Finn, Mr David Happ, Ms Cindy Frost, Mr Andrew Murrell and our other music staff. In working “together and by association” in this vital area, the staff wish to guide the young men towards the full life to which we are all called. This year the College has undergone a review to develop a School Improvement Framework for 10
2010–2013. In seeking always to improve what we do, a major goal over the next four years in the field of education in faith is to provide more sacramental and prayer opportunities for both students and staff. Mr Patrick Jurd Coordinator
Archbishop Elliott confirms Jacob Cobucci
From the Chaplain As another year of Sacramental preparation draws to a close we can look back and give thanks for the many graces that have emanated from our young men. Year 4 students Ben Caruso, Zac Cobucci, Dalton Di Medio, Harry Goodman, Year 6, Michael Rogers, Jaime Andres Marino and Year 7 candidates, Harvey Hooper, Henry Brown, Nick Amon, James Batholomeusz, and Tom Harkin received the Sacrament of Penance for the first time on 27th May, 2010 in the College Chapel. Father Brendan Dillon (an Old Boy of the College), students, and their families gathered for a joyful celebration of the second Rite of Reconciliation. Term 2 saw us move on to preparing for Confirmation. Twenty students and one staff member were Confirmed by Bishop Peter Elliott at St Anthony’s Church, Glen Huntly on 25th July, 2010. Over several weeks the students explored many aspects of their spiritual journey towards a more adult faith. They delved more deeply into their obligation to become men who use the gifts of the Spirit in service for
others. We congratulate Year 6 students, Jarrod Hambleton, Joshua Medoro, Benjamin Morgan, Jonathan La Grua, Jaime Andres Marino, Michael Panozzo, Mitchell Riley; Year 7 students, Lucas Brzeski, Daniel Byrden, Sam Boyle, Louis Collins, Conor Khan, Jacob Cobucci, Nicholas Monterosso, Braydon Andrew, Remo Checcucci, Michael Griechen and Year 8 students, Jack McGraw, Darcy White and Kane Mutton, as well as staff member, Emma D’Angelo. Student Wellbeing This year much has happened in terms of wellbeing. The following indicates the activities coordinated from the wellbeing office. Individual Counselling: Paul Marshall (Kinnoull Campus) and I (at Tiverton) have ongoing contact with approximately 240 students, who we see individually. Students typically present with issues including family dysfunction, mood disorders, personality issues, social awkwardness, behaviour management issues and a variety of personal growth and development concerns. Whilst counselling is confidential, students sometimes elect to have parents involved, and some degree of family counselling has been provided throughout the year. Group Counselling: An initiative of the student wellbeing teams (see right) has been the establishment of “social skills groups” which have been created in Primary and Years 7, 8 and 9. Student wellbeing team members believed that it was important to support students in their year level who struggle with social interaction. To this end, groups of about five members gather together with one member from the student wellbeing team to meet fortnightly. Agendas for meetings have focused on aspects of social interaction with which members need assistance. Meetings have provided forums where boys have “voice” and where attempts to experiment socially have been supported.
Student Wellbeing Team: It was a pleasure to be able to introduce members of the Student Wellbeing team to the Tiverton Assembly early in the year, to see them receive their badges of office, and to have them recognized as valuable contributors to student leadership. Last year the group was trialed and in 2010 earned its unique place in the promotion of student wellbeing in the DLS community. The group consists of twelve members: one boy from each of the three primary grades and three boys from Years 7, 8 and 9. These boys have a very clear and focused set of tasks. Their tasks have included: • Acknowledging each student’s birthday with the provision of a card and treats — a function of the Year 9 section of the team • Providing the “transition booklet” to incoming Year 6s — a function of the Year 7 section of the team • Providing all students at Tiverton with a hardcopy of the “SWT newsletter” — published once per term. The boys have worked well and hard to cover a large range of topics including: death and grief, happiness, settling in, organization, sorting out arguments, understanding teasing, confidence, real friends, respect, gaming addiction, Facebook, pressure, divorce, judging others, sex, aspergers, anxiety, acceptance, determination, image, The Student Wellbeing Team Back Row: James Halliday, Harry Thompson, Aiden Watson, Liam Bisognin, Jayden Rowe Middle Row: Mr Pascal Rohan, Remy Cadman, Daniel Rodriguez, Michael McMahon, Christian Di Donato Front Row: Oliver Lindsay, Ben Caruso, Ryan Taranto, James 6 12 Bartholomeusz
tiredness, feeling “down”, “crossing the line” – what’s funny and what’s not. In addition, each issue contains a number of websites that are pertinent to the student population. The boys are to be congratulated for the variety of topics covered and the clarity with which they have been presented. Congratulations to the team, which has shown real initiative and leadership in wellbeing and which has worked, not from one project to another, but consistently throughout the year. To the best of my knowledge, there is not another team like this one in other secondary colleges … so “cheers” to us at DLS! Parent Education Evenings: Two well-attended evenings were offered this year. The first was on “partying and drawing boundaries”, presented by a Year 9 student and myself, and the second on the topic of “boys online” wholly presented by members of the Student Wellbeing Team. It is heartening to see parents attend in good number, and engage with topics that make an impact upon their sons, and family life. A key element of the usefulness and success of these evenings has been the involvement of students. Mr Pascal Rohan Director of Student Wellbeing
De La Salle Parents’ Network Our year started with our annual Easter Raffle which the boys look forward to. We had 12 prizes and it was delightful to watch the excitement on their faces as they collected their basket of goodies (even the ‘big’ boys, though they tried hard to play it cool). My thanks to Nola Chaplin and Katy Kaupert who gave up their time to help prepare and wrap the baskets. As usual we held our popular Mothers’ Weekend at Jan Juc. We enjoyed a weekend with much shopping, eating and conversation. Barbara Rix was instrumental in organizing the weekend and keeping us all in line, and continues to put her hand up for this task even though she no longer has a son at the school. We then turned our attention to preparing for our big event for the year, “Almost Anything Goes”. Much time and effort went into preparing for this evening and the end result was very worthwhile. The numbers were down on last year and at one stage we looked like holding the night in a much smaller venue, but in true De La style the school community rallied and we had a fantastic evening. The silent auction was a big talking point with over 150 items. This was mainly due to John Morgan, who rang me a month before the event and offered to approach his contacts for donations. I would meet him at least once a week at the school so he could
off-load his goodies. Every time his 4WD was packed to the roof. Thank you John. We raised just under $15,000. Once again we provided the over jacket for sale and much time and effort went into providing this service. My thanks to Marita Torrisi and Mercedes Marino for looking after this particular venture. We saw the end of an era early in the year when the school newsletter went to electronic print. For many years an ever-changing group of parents met every third Friday for the mail-out of the newsletter. This involved compiling, labelling and manually inserting the newsletter into the envelopes for every family within the school. A mammoth task at the best of times, if volunteer numbers were down, climbing Mt Everest looked an easier option. To the many, many parents who have helped over the years, your help was greatly appreciated. At the beginning of the year I spoke at the Year 7 Parents’ morning tea and also at an information evening for parents interested in sending their sons to De La. On both occasions I listened to our staff speak with passion and dedication to the ongoing, never- ending and at times unrecognised role they play in shaping and defining the lives of our sons. The School Improvement Framework took place midyear and I met with the facilitators and a number of other representatives of the school to take part in an extremely productive meeting on the future direction of the school and how best to arrive at these outcomes. Early in the year Br Paul came to one of our monthly meetings, introduced himself and gave his views on the school in the present and where it would be headed in the future. Br Paul actively sought our opinions and made it quite clear that he viewed the Parent Network as another resource of advice and knowledge. End of an era — the last Newsletter mailout

This was further enhanced by a very productive evening where Br Paul addressed an audience of interested and caring parents who had the chance to ask questions of him on any and all topics. More than 100 parents attended the evening and the feedback was extremely positive. My thanks to Br Paul for his support and guidance. To Marie Birkensleigh, our extremely capable Vice President, I say thank you for the number of times she stepped in and represented me at various functions and for the witty articles she wrote for the Newsprint. The Parent Network would not function without Trish Woodman who quietly works in the background and acts as my sounding board, walking encyclopaedia, secretary and good friend. Thank you Trish. Lastly, thank you to the small, dedicated, hardworking committee who make the Parent Network an enjoyable entity. Mrs Virginia Fairchild

Four students achieving 99 represents the College’s best Top VCE results in a decade. These four and all the other students achieving 90 or higher will be presented to the College Assembly for Induction of the 2011 Leaders in early February. Achievements at this level of excellence take more than abundant talent. These students worked incredibly hard and drew upon the strong support of their teachers right through their schooling at De La Salle College. During 2010 the College has focused upon Excellence in academic as well as non-academic areas. In the area of academic excellence a number of steps have been prepared for implementation either during 2010 or from the start of 2011: — The development of new Vision, Mission and Values statements, which place excellence at the core of our vision. — The development of an Awards system that recognises high levels of Academic excellence, not just the best student. This has been implemented already with the development of the Principal’s Honours Lists that have been very well received by the student and parent body. — Implementation of a new 10-day timetable with increased Teaching time for the core literacies. The 10-day aspect will serve to reduce the number of interruptions to learning. — As part of our ongoing commitment to improve curriculum delivery, and our desire to provide the best eLearning opportunities, we are implementing a 1:1 Netbook program over 2011–2012 for Years 7–11. A sophisticated learning platform (Moodle) will provide state of the art, 24/7 access to richer and deeper learning. — The Miguel Class being a Homeroom group of higher academic achieving students undertaking a program of enrichment and extension in core curriculum subjects. The class will be formed in Year 9 2011 and follow through into Year 10, 2012. Our aim in 2011 and beyond is to continue to develop an improved culture of excellence, with higher expectations and aspirations across the school community in Learning and Teaching. The memories I have of De La, and the memories that will stay with me forever revolve around the theme of “Passion”. Most of the time we take for granted the events of the moment. However, it is these moments we will look back on in 10 years and realize how special it was, or think “wow, that took guts.” Such as... The Passion and pride with which the class of 2010 have taken to the motto “No Regrets”; which has encapsulated the year level, the Cross Country team, and especially those of us who knew Daniel Lagastes up to his passing in Year 8.
The passion that our teachers have shown, to stick with us all through thick and thin and provide us with every opportunity to succeed; to help us improve as students and as men. The Passion that De La boys took onto the sporting field in every contest, and the extra effort put in when we were up against the strongest adversary. The Passion that students like Michael Badrock display for the College — teaching the entire school things like the “Whoompa”, enhancing the great school spirit that exists here at De La Salle. 23
The Passion that Mr Riordan shows for his job and the care he takes for all of the students at the College. He is the only person I know who can remember 1300 names of students, staff and a fair few parents. Whatever your Passion is at school, whether it be chess, cricket, maths, footy, debating or politics, I implore you to get involved, be animated. One very famous old boy of this College once said during an AFL Grand Final to his players: “At least do something! Do! Don’t think, don’t hope, do! At least you can come off and say ‘I did this, I shepherded, I played on. At least I did something’”. We can apply the same thing for our schooling, to say “I deserved those marks, I was the best student I could have been”. We came as strangers, became friends. Now we walk out as brothers, proud to be Lasallian. We may not have vast playing fields, but what we do have is 1200 boys who are ready to give their all for each other, 1200 boys with blue and gold running through their veins, and that is something that is unique to De La Salle College, something that I’m sure every other school would give anything to have. I would like to thank all of the staff for their work with us over the last six years. You have all had an influence on our year level in some way, and we are extremely grateful for the work you have done. To the student body, I encourage you to get involved in De La. That is how you forge some of the greatest memories from your time here. If you ‘run the gauntlet’, great things will come. Find a passion, run with it and use it to lead you to bigger and better things. Last, and most of all, I’d like to thank and congratulate the class of 2010. You are an incredible group of individuals and I look forward to seeing you all succeed in the future in whatever you do. Alex Hay College Captain

Coolies Visit to India 2009–10 Late last year, 17 Year 12 boys travelled to India to take part in the annual “Coolies” program. From Melbourne to Chennai, via Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, the large group of excited but weary boys and teachers arrived in India late on Saturday night to be met by Brother Thambi, who escorted us to the Hotel Masa. The following morning, we bade farewell as the group separated. Sean Corcoran, Dean Dragonetti, Santiago Ferreyra-Bas, Owen Luby, Carlos Saliba, Barry Tjhardji and Alex Trebse headed west to Keesara, located approximately 40km west of Vijayawada, Andra Pradesh with Mr Evans and Ms Runci. Another nine boys, Patrick Cross, James Fagan, Michael James, James Joo, Andrew Pattinson, Haimish Rix, Roger Madafferi and Daniel Stow ventured into Tamil Nadu and stayed at Keelamudiman with Mr DiCiccio, Mr Conti, and exstaff member Mr Grafen for four weeks. At BJT College, Keesera, our first day was spent touring and greeting each class in the primary and secondary school. It felt as if we had been transported back forty years. Bikes were lined up neatly against the trees, stacks of books held by the back
spring of the bikes. Little people with big brown eyes tumbled excitedly off the yellow rickety school buses and ran towards us, struggling with their oblong backpacks and plastic lunch baskets. ‘Hello Miss, what is your name?’ They said as they touched the sides of their heads with their fingertips. After a reading from the Bible and the Koran, we were introduced to the school population. Our group was greeted with cheers and claps. The concrete floors of the classrooms looked unforgiving, and the walls, concrete as well, were bleak. The children sat cross-legged on the floor in rows with their books and a small slate blackboard to copy work from the board. Their school day begins a lot earlier than ours and is definitely more rigorous. Even the kindergarten grades learn English, Hindi and Telegu (the language of the Andra Pradesh region). The grades are called Standards and school goes from Standard 1 which is about Grade 1 up until Standard 10. After that, they go to Standard +1 and Standard +2 which is considered College. Seeing the Degree building, which the 2008 Coolies worked on, was definitely uplifting. Once completed, many more students would be able to attend the school to further their education beyond Standard (Year 10). For many Indian students this is all the education they will receive. The tour of the worksite was confronting. The immensity of the task ahead suddenly became all the more real once we stood in front of it. Once finished, it will consist of 24 classrooms, two computer laboratories and a library. Br Tom walked us through the site and explained that this building was not built when the 30
2008 Coolies were here. The completion of this building will free up the existing secondary school building to expand the Degree component of the College. Equipped with steel capped boots, working gloves, sunscreen and tropical strength insect repellent, we set to work. Our day began at 8 am so that we could have breakfast and be ‘booted up’, as Mr Evans would say, by 8.55 am. The day was broken up into three shifts of an hour and a half. It may not seem like much, but working in 35+ degree heat and using muscles that were hitherto taken for granted was tiring. The work was certainly physical but who could complain with an endlessly blue sky, palm trees and cotton fields as far as the eye could see! The lack of equipment meant that the labour was manual, in the truest sense of the word. There was not a wheelbarrow on site and concrete was mixed by hand. New technology was scarce. Sand was carried up flights of stairs in canvas sacks. Two people would pack the sacks, one would ferry them to the stairs, whereupon two people on the stairs shifted them to the top. From there it was passed along the corridor to the room. Bricks were carried on circular metal trays. The workers would laugh at us and poke their tongues out because we could not carry more than four bricks at a time and
St Vincent de Paul Society were not game enough to try to carry them on our heads or shoulders. Both groups were reunited before Christmas when the south group arrived at Keesera to commence our two weeks touring of Southern India. Scenic Hampi, the UNESCO listed site, was our first stop. Christmas Eve was spent sun-baking (with sunscreen of course!) on the beaches of Goa. On Christmas Day, we travelled into historic Old Goa to see the burial site of St Francis Xavier. That night we dined in style by the waters of Panajim and were treated to a night of dancing, face painting, balloon animals and fortune telling! From there we explored the delights of Mangalore, including an Indian shopping mall and celebrated New Year’s Eve in Mysore. Our last stop was in Kuala Lumpur to indulge in some shopping and sight seeing. Four weeks may not seem like a long time for anyone to make a significant contribution to a country where extreme poverty is so rife. Shifting sand and carrying bricks may seem inconsequential but to the Brothers and students at BJT Lasallian College in Keesera, our labour was certainly valued as part of the ‘bigger picture’. Ms Angela Runci

Retreats Year 12 Retreat Retreats have long been part of the Year 12 experience at De La Salle. Held at the beginning of the academic year, retreats provide a chance for our young men to start their final year at the College on a good foundation and be aware of the presence of God in their lives. Leaving on Thursday morning and returning on Friday afternoon, they can be a window of peace and friendship away from our usual setting and day-to-day concerns. The program is made up of a range of activities designed to be appealing and practical for our students. They include discussions, games and prayer, as well as reflection time. The retreats are an opportunity for Homerooms to mix in informal surroundings, strengthening the relationships that will help them through their VCE year. If they are attentive, these relationships are another way that God speaks to them, calling them by name. Year 11 Retreats The Year 11 retreat takes Homerooms out of the normal school environment for a day of personal reflection and team-building. The fast-paced program allows for excitement and formation in equal part. The Homeroom teachers and their students complete activities and discussion in locations around Melbourne. Students enjoy the casual nature of the day, and benefit from seeing their teachers and peers in a different light. Year 8 Retreats The theme this year for Year 8 retreats was “Our Response to the Poor”. We focused on our trip to Sacred Heart Mission and the surrounding areas. We looked at Blessed Mary MacKillop and her response to the poor. A day was set aside for the Year 8s to take part in a range of activities such as games,
presentations, prayer and discussions. The retreats are a marvellous opportunity for the students and their Homeroom teachers to mix and share their ideas of responding to the poor. Year 7 Retreats This year, the focus of the Year 7 retreats was based around Community. Who do we look up to in the community and what sorts of community groups do we belong to? Which sorts of groups help others within a community? A day was set aside for the Year 7s to reflect on this issue. They also took part in a range of activities such as discussions, games and prayer. The retreats are a marvellous opportunity for Homerooms to mix and share their experiences of community. Camp Lasalle During the April break, a group of Year 8 students from all four Victorian Lasallian schools were invited to spend some time at the Brothers’ property at Phillip Island. Camp Lasalle was a chance for students to get to know each other and enjoy a break. We were fortunate enough to do several activities such as
32
going to see the penguins, the always popular visit to the chocolate factory, and a visit to “The Nobbies”. There was an opportunity for prayer, group discussions and a chance to enjoy the beach. Leaders Encounter This year has seen the beginning of our Leaders encountering Leaders from all four Lasallian schools, meeting to network and share their experiences of leadership, as well as have time to socialise. Mr Des Calleja
Papua New Guinea In September, staff and students from De La Salle College accepted an invitation to volunteer at the De La Salle Mainohana Secondary School in Papua New Guinea. The 14-day trip was filled with many laughs, new friendships and hard work. We were able to experience a completely new culture, lifestyle and appreciation for life, all of which bonded the 11 students and staff members who took part. The students learnt many new skills, and developed and maintained a team approach to tasks. The work involved improving the comfort and safety of the College. With the support and knowledge from Mr Warren Walker, and plumbing teacher Mr Murray Wells from Holmesglen TAFE, the boys removed the existing concrete floor, installed new plumbing and gas pipes, and concreted and tiled a new floor in the student kitchen. They also repaired windows and beams in the guest house. Despite the heat and humidity we completed all of our tasks on schedule, leaving time for “R&R”. This included swims in the river and games of rugby or Aussie rules with the locals.
The work was made easier by the humorous Mainohana maintenance team, consisting of Phil, Peer and Eddie, who somehow seemed to work twice as hard and fast without breaking into a sweat. All of the boys were treated like royalty by the staff and students from Mainohana, who gave us the opportunity to experience their traditional food. Miss Madelyn Fakepo and students Leontine, Henrieta and Philo, with Chef Jeff, catered incredibly well, considering the large appetite of the De La boys! This made our trip all the more enjoyable. We were also treated to an overnight home stay in a nearby village to experience their culture, which was very rewarding. We were special guests at a
33
village’s Independence Day celebrations, visited the markets, the War Memorial, and experienced an incredible farewell presentation from Mainohana’s staff and students. Our experience has changed the views and values of everyone who took part. We experienced a different culture, learnt many new skills and made plenty of new friends. The memories we shared will never be forgoten On behalf of the students, I would like to thank all who participated in making this possible, and I recommend the adventure to all future Year 11 students Patrick Hanney Year 11
The Philippines In the Term 3 break, an excited group of 19 Year 9 and 10 boys bade their parents farewell before embarking on a two-week cultural and social justice exchange with La Salle Greenhills in Manila. Accompanied by Mr Murray Ennis and Ms Angela Runci, the students — Benson Adams, Marcus Andrews, Peter Bradley, Jack Campion, Will Carson, Mitchell Clarke-Smith, Jon Craig, Jordan Dalgliesh, Harry Dziubinski, Jordan Gasparini, Aaron Gross, Michael Harris-Jaffe, Ben Jopling, Paul Masson, Ryan Moody, Sebastian Otten, Jack Reeve, Max Stephens and Jordan Wells — spent two weeks living with a Filipino family, experiencing the culture and customs of a country some of us know very little about. Nothing could prepare us for the intense heat and humidity that hit us on arrival. La Salle Greenhills is located in an affluent area of Manila. The school itself boasts a soccer field, running track, swimming pool and basketball stadium. Staring out of the comfortable air-conditioned bus at the haphazard shantytowns bordering both sides of the road, the boys were struck by gross inconsistencies between the different levels of society. The city of Manila itself is inhabited by the equivalent of Australia’s entire population. Many live on less than US$2 a day.
La Salle Greenhills is heavily involved in social justice action. While it may be one of the most affluent schools in the Philippines, the causes it supports are Lasallian in every way. The majority of students agreed, it was the Outreach programs which left a lasting impression. We spent a morning learning about the lives of street kids who come to La Salle to get an education and learn basic life skills. One of the boys slept on a piece of cardboard. As Michael Harris-Jaffe commented: ‘the thought of this really hit me hard’. One of the organisations that Greenhills is heavily invovled in is Gawad Kalinga. In Filipino, Gawad Kalinga literally translates to mean “giving care”. This organisation is a Philippine-based poverty alleviation and nation-building movement. Its mission is to end poverty for 5 million families by 2024. Together with the La Salle students, we spent two days working with volunteers from the city of Manila helping to build houses for people. The time spent at Gawad Kalinga was certainly the most rewarding for one student Peter Bradley who said: “shifting bricks, bucketing water and shoveling dirt was certainly hard work, but to be able to assist these poverty-stricken people, even with something as simple as unloading a truck full of bricks, felt like such a contribution. This hands-on aspect of the trip was why I wanted to go from the start”. Visiting the Jaime Hilario Integrated School was a highlight. Located in Bagac on the Bataan Peninsula, La Salle provides fund34
ing for student school uniforms, recess and lunch programs and transportation to and from school, and aims to instill an understanding of community and environment. Boys spent a morning cleaning the coastline, planting a vegetable garden, and visiting classes to play games and sing songs before gathering for lunch. Another member of the group, Jack Campion, said it was the day that touched his heart the most. “On our last day, a Brother from Jamie Hilario gave me a note written by one of the students telling me how happy she was that we had spent time there.” Other highlights included visiting the resort town of Tagatay to see the The Taal Volcano, an active volcano with a large crater lake with a small cone rising in the middle, and being transported back to Spanish colonial times inside the walled city of Intramuros. Some fearless students also tasted Filipino street food like Balut, boiled duck eggs! As we drove away from Greenhills, waving to our new Lasallian friends, many of the boys talked of going back to Manila to work with Gawad Kalinga and visit their host families again. Ms Angela Runci, with the help of Michael HarrisJaffe, Jack Campion, Peter Bradley and Ryan Moody
Lasallian Service Men For Others De La Salle College offers a highly organised social service programme designed to develop the attitude of being “men for others”. By going out into the community to assist other people as “brothers” and “sisters” our students were able to recognise the dignity of all. Social service at De La Salle means getting out of your comfort zone and working with those who would benefit from your time, and it begins within our own community, beginning at Year 9. The students in Year 9, in alternate times of the year, head away from the classroom into areas of the community who greatly appreciate our care and support. This year more than 80 venues were visited and helped by De La students who showed themselves to be “men for others” Lasallian Service is about concern for others — the poor, the underprivileged, the less empowered, the unemployed, the disabled, the elderly, the sick and the lonely. Mr Melo Conti “During our time we’ve learnt a lot. Classes are arranged so that each child can get the attention and help they need. We’ve been given the privilege of working and interacting with children who immediately accepted us and made us part of the group. At lunchtimes we went out and played soccer with them. Whenever we walked past a classroom someone would ask if we would play soccer with him or her at lunchtime. We tried to make a difference for them, but they have created a bigger change in us. We’ve seen how willing they are to be involved.
We leave you with this quote: “Influence not yourself, but others, and they in turn, will influence you”. This was an experience that will shape our lives, one we will never forget. Michael Zbiegien, Cailin Rolfe and Jaime Cagorski Year 9 “To sum up, Lasallian service was a great, relaxing and enjoyable experience, which taught me a lot.” Michael McMahon Year 9 “I spent time with one of the residents and talked to her about her family background, which was very interesting. She gave me a list of her family members so I could do some research for her on the Internet. Her name was Elizabeth and she was very nice. She had an incredibly interesting family history. Most of her ancestors were wool traders and were some of the first settlers.” Hans Kie Year 9 “I found my time on Lasallian service to be very rewarding. Before going I was unsure if I was going to like it, but by the end of the week I did. While I was there I had the opportunity to interact and talk with many of the elderly residents. I met some very interesting people. By the end of the week I had gained much more than I ever thought I would.” Michael Patane Year 9 “When I was there I was fortunate to learn some very valuable life lessons, like listening and interacting with people of all ages.” Tom Fisher Year 9 “Through my week of Lasallian service I had a lot of good experiences. It was good to see the old people look so happy when they saw me walk in. I found that the way to get the most out of my experience was to be involved and engage with the residents.” Jack Reeve Year 9 35
“The week opened my thinking about the elderly and disabled. I felt welcomed into the home — everywhere I walked people would say “hello” and ask me questions. It was good talking with them because, apart from my grandparents, I never get to talk with older people.” Stephen Galgani Year 9 “During most of the activities I realized that it was hard or difficult for the residents to perform tasks that I would consider simple. It made me appreciate what I can do, and that I am very lucky to be able and independent.” Alex Di Medio Year 9
Mission Action Day
36
At the end of Term 1 the entire De La Salle community came together to raise money for those less fortunate than themselves in Lasallian Mission works throughout Australia and Papua New Guinea. As always it was a happy day with all contributing to the spirit of generosity and goodwill. Credit should go to Mr Ian Oliver, Mr Chris Martin and the MAD organizing committee for their great work behind the scenes. Students promised close to $76,000, an extraordinary amount.

Haydn McKertish (pictured left) doesn’t mind being called a class clown — in fact he is a pretty good one. Haydn has not only taken out the top comedy award in the Annual De La Salle Class Clown Competition but won the State finals. Haydn was one of three De La Salle College students invited to join in the annual Class Clown Competition which is run as an adjunct to the International Comedy Festival. Will Borschman and Harry Saltis made up the comedy trio.
Music Camp In August the Music Department ‘packed up shop and hit the road’ on its fifth Annual Music Tour, destination: Bairnsdale. The Tour included the College’s Senior ensembles, the Stage Band, Concert Band, String Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble and the College Choir. The Tour provided De La’s budding musicians the experience to hone their skills whilst playing to a live and enthusiastic audience. The tour schedule was for three performances a day, many of which were to small primary schools, one consisting only 13 students! On the final night of the Tour our students were privileged to be joined on stage by jazz legend, Don Burrows. During the afternoon our College En-
sembles worked with Bairnsdale Secondary College music students in a very stimulating and challenging workshop! While the Concert and Stage Bands worked directly with Don, our String Ensemble joined forces with the Bairnsdale students, while our Choir and Guitar Ensemble spent some time perfecting their repertoire for the evening performance. The show gave our students a great opportunity to experience working not only with students from another school, but also one of Australia’s most acclaimed jazz musicians. Hats off to all the musicians for an amazing Tour and their continued dedication to the Music Department. Special thanks go to all the staff who attended, in particular Jazz legend Don Burrows playing with the combined De La Salle Ms Cindy Frost, whose constant hard work and Bairnsdale Secondary College bands and dedication ensured that this Tour ran smoothly and would not soon be forgotten. Music
One of the highlights in the De La Salle music department this year has been the strength from within the junior ranks. The Intermediate Band is incredibly strong with many students from the Year 7 Band Program graduating to Intermediate Band within the first six months of learning their band instrument. The introduction of the Primary Music club has taken off, with Grade 4 students meeting weekly at lunch time to play music and share performances. The ACC Music workshops, which take place at regular intervals through the year, cater for a wide range of musicians. They include sessions for Concert Band, Stage Band, Vocalists, Rock Band, Percussion and Strings. This year De La Salle musicians have been in excellent form, featuring as soloists and band players in each of these settings. In May, the Sacred Music Concert took place at Hamer Hall. This concert featured a gorgeous selection of sacred songs performed by 38 schools across the Melbourne Archdiocese.
College Choir Simon Windley, our Music Captain featured as a soloist and our choir performed in the massed items. This year the Music tour was quite special. We ventured to Bairnsdale and performed at a range of local primary schools. Renowned Jazz musician Don Burrows performed in the workshop and featured in the evening concert with the Standing: Ms Cindy Frost (director), Mark Goy, Pat Collins, Luka Dujic, Jon Craig, combined Bairnsdale/ Raphael Canty De La Salle band. Seated: Tom McCausland, Luke Torrisi, Michael Bohan, Simon Windley, Karl Bianco, Mr Burrows is a graLuis Andres Marino cious man and gave a warm address Absent: John Puohotaua, Rory Sheehy, John Glover, Nils Sandgren, Will Wright to the audience at conclusion of the concert. Mr Burrows describes music as a powerful investment for parents. He went on to praise parents who pay for lessons, buy instruments, ensure rehearsals are attended and listen to their children play and develop — with varying degrees of success! Music spills out into so many areas of learning and life. It exercises the brain, the social connection and the spirit. As Mr Burrows said, it’s a powerful investment. Who can argue with that? VCE Media 2010 This year’s VCE final films provided a wonderful insight into the hearts and minds of male teenagers, their passions, obsessions, loves and dreams — all told in 4–10 minute films. This year’s themes drew on a range of genres, but with more documentaries than previously, possibly inspired by last year’s award-winning documentary, Every Day I Dream about Sneakers, by Sam Ayre. Themes included skateboarding, cars, graffiti, sneakers, gangsters, mid-life crisis, talking dogs, failed rock stars, girlfriends, muscle builders and unrequited love. Some films touched on some very personal issues such as Daniel Iacovangelo’s, poignant exploration into the experiences of growing up with a stutter. This year, two films took out awards for Best VCE Film. Rhys Jones’ skilfully rendered animation Reunion was entirely hand painted in a process called Roto-scoping, where video footage is painted in the post production stage.
The second award for Best VCE film went to James Leone, for his beautiful romantic film, Different Perspectives. The film, shot in HD, tells the story of two
young lovers who break up after a series of misunderstandings. Comedy plays a big part in the life of the male teenager so naturally comedy featured strongly among this year’s VCE program. Charlie Mottram’s film, Pavlova, hilariously followed the antics of two dogs, Coco and Toby and their mad-capped devouring and then remaking of a pavlova. Using voiceovers for the canine stars, Charlie skilfully developed both a sense of the character and comedy. Michael Keegan’s Jeremy Durgen’s Airsports, starring his older brother Tom, featured strong acting and a very funny script which kept the audience laughing. A Real State of Chaos by Jacob Gooden followed in the footsteps of The Office, in its take-off of a real estate agent, played by Jacob’s father. And in a similar vein, Teen Spirit by Luke Henriques Gomes was a clever spoof about a rock band trying to break into the music scene. A documentary film worthy of note was Jamie Farnell’s film, The Art of Skate, a fastpaced revealing look at Melbourne’s skating scene. Other documenta52
ries included Tim Foster’s Me, Myself, My Car, Our Story and, Pat Harrison’s visual masterpiece, Graffiti. Unlike in previous years, only one of this year’s films, used music as a theme. Lower Your Eyelids to Die with the Sun by Jean Rene Vauzelle featured some brilliant acting by his father. Shot mostly at Port Melbourne beach, the film’s strength was its visual composition and camera work. Congratulations to the 2010 VCE Media class for your hard work and effort this year. Kerry Martin VCE Media Teacher
Drama Night At the end of Term 2, Drama Night was held for students who studied Drama in Semester 1. This was an opportunity for all parents to come and see the work their boys had created. The new Year 7 shadow puppet theatre worked very well with entertaining voice work and puppets from the boys. Year 8 boys showed their character plays with some very clever performances. The Year 9 monologues were effective, showing depth of perception and detail in the work, whilst the Year 10 boys produced a telling ensemble piece created by a process of improvisation and character work. It was a varied night of quality work enjoyed by all.

Peter Pan
54
St Martin’s Theatre was transformed into the fantastical world of Neverland for this year’s joint De La Salle and Sacré Cœur production of Peter Pan. The cast took their audience on a journey with their dynamic acting, ingenious puppetry and polished combat and dance routines. Peter Pan offered an opportunity for students to showcase their extraordinary talents to large audiences of staff, family and friends. This production could not have taken place without the hard work and dedication of the cast and crew. The staff team — with special mention of our Stage Manager Marg McPhee — was a vital part of the production and all should be congratulated for their efforts. A detailed and intricate sound track, coupled with a cleverly lit ‘Tinkerbell’ added to the sense of wonder. All sound effects including the voice of Tinkerbell were timed by our own Cailin Rolfe. All actors worked tirelessly to produce polished performances. Eugene Twomey’s rendition of a somewhat loveable, but entirely dastardly Starky contrasted with the boyish nature of the Darling boys, performed by Max Stephens and Andy Rappos. Joshua Attard performed the role of Mr Darling with an endearing charm. The Pirates and Lost Boys showed strength and vitality throughout each and every performance. Jenny Birch-Marston

Primary Students Sponsor A Seeing Eye Puppy “River” Over the past twelve months the Primary Grades have been raising money via a sausage sizzle and donating to the SEDA money boxes to help with the training, feeding and veterinary expenses for River, the Golden Retriever puppy we sponsor. When he passes the tough testing and graduates, he will then be given to someone who is vision impaired. The students were thrilled when River and Mr Paul Roberts from SEDA came along to visit us at a special assembly where Michael Rogers of Grade 6 gave Mr Roberts a cheque for $512. The students can be extremely proud of their efforts in their sponsorship of River and we are all looking forward to his re-visiting the College, perhaps with the vision impaired person to whom he is given. Year 9 Camp Camp Howqua 2010 was a year of record-breaking experiences. Initially with Nathan surging down the icy cold water slide, fed by the Howqua River, not once but a total of 43 times! Multiple bulls-eyes achieved by our precise archers (prompting calls for an ACC Archery team!); with the wind at our backs, reaching record speeds on the flying fox; and most significantly, the teachers lapping the students in the survivor challenge! All records aside, the true worth of the camp was shown through the willingness of each boy to challenge themselves and their teammates whenever the opportunity arose. Well done to all who attended. Year 2010 has proven to be the most enjoyable time at De La Salle for me. Year 9s were pushed this year to be the role models of the campus, and encouraged others to push themselves further, taking on the theme “Leadership through Excellence”. This theme was taken on in school, as well as extra curricular activities. All were encouraged to Standing: Mr John McAlroy, Chris Carberry, Jack Cowling, Callum Ernikiolis, Tom Connolly, take on something new, Theodore Siriopoulos, Steve Galgani, Mr Robert Bonnici Seated: Harrison Dziubinski, William Agar, Patrick Arceri, Michael McMahon, Adam Tonkin to put ourselves out of our ‘comfort zone’ and achieve our best. I am truly Winners — Semester 2 proud of the way we went about our duties throughout the year. Finally to the two vice-captains, Will Agar and Michael McMahon: you represented the campus well, and without your help we would not have had the successes we had this year. Thank you for always being around when I needed you. I would like to end by saying thank you to all the Year 9 boys who gave me the chance to represent them and the campus this year. It was an honour I will cherish. Patrick Arceri 85 Campus Captain

The Year 10 Outdoor Education Camp Program provided 26 students the opportunity to travel to Queenstown, NZ for a week of heartthumping adventure. The ski fields were Remarkable by name, and remarkable by nature. Whilst few were able to master the ‘decent down the mountain’, many students enjoyed their maiden voyage into the snow in what is widely considered some of the most spectacular mountain terrain in the world. Jet boating up the Dart River (and paddling back down it), allowed students to take in the pristine beauty of the alpine region. Clearly Mother Nature was going through a period of glacial melt, producing wild and, at times, unforgiving white water. But through determination and teamwork the boys were able to work their way down the Karawai River. At the beginning of the Maori ceremony Mr Harrup was made an honorary “Maori Chief” — much to the delight of the De La tribe. And by week’s end, the De La boys had gained a real respect for both the physical and cultural dimensions of the land of the long white cloud. “Choice bro”. The Blue & Gold Ball On Saturday, 1st May, the 2010 Blue & Gold Presentation Set all enjoyed a memorable evening at the Springvale City Hall. Ten weeks of rigorous training preceded the event. On Sunday mornings the partners all assembled at De La Salle to learn eight complicated dances. Some of us thought that we could never put a foot right! However, in front of 550 guests on the night, we managed to put it all together. This was largely due to the perseverance of our dance instructor, Ms Susan Bollard, and the expertise of Ms Joy Bew, the Coordinator of the Blue & Gold Presentation Ball. The night started nervously for most of us, but this was alleviated by traveling in style in an assortment of limousines to the venue. On arrival at the Hall, the Guitar Ensemble provided fantastic music and Mrs Joan Ferguson, MC for the evening, welcomed us. The Official Guests, Mrs Trish Woodman and Mr Peter Riordan, received the Presentation Set. We were ably led by our Junior Attendants, Ruby Ford and Georgia McAlroy. Then it was down to the business of surprising many parents and guests in the audience with our slick dance moves on the floor. During the night, we were served by our College Leaders, who acted as drink waiters. We all enjoyed our three-course dinner in the stunning Blue & Gold atmosphere. Mr Jon Hewett managed to capture the essence of the night in his photography and the DVD that was produced is a reminder of a great night. We had a BALL!

De La Salle Libraries At the beginning of the year, we warmly welcomed Br Matthew Heron to the Library staff. He comes to us from Adelaide, and has extensive experience in libraries. Our thanks and best wishes go with Mrs Glenda Morris, who took up a position at another school in July. There have been a number of staff absences, both long- and short-term (Mrs Libby Lam for part of Term 2, Br Matthew for Term 3, Miss Leanne Ickeringill for part of Term 3, and Mrs Morris from July), and I would like to offer my sincere thanks to each member of Library staff for willingly, and with good humour, undertaking the duties of those who have been absent. Thank you too, to Mr Dan Halpin, who stepped in at short notice to assist us while Miss Ickeringill was away. A small but significant change to our management structure occurred this year, with the Library now accountable to the Assistant Principal — Curriculum, Mr Stephen Young. This is a logical and positive move, as the Library supports the teaching, learning and reading needs of the College community. A new initiative for 2010 was to deliver our Current Awareness Scheme by email, reducing our impact on the environment. This has been well-received by staff, and will be maintained. A number of initiatives
from 2009 found to be effective have continued into 2010, including the newsletter, Library News, now also delivered electronically. The Staff Book Club maintained a number of devoted members, meeting regularly in the Kinnoull Library — a cosy, comfortable environment, surrounded by books, as was the Staff Holiday Reading Event each term. The Primary Library Program ran as usual this year, with a number of excursions to the Stonnington Library, Malvern. The Library Reading Program was refocussed this year on wider reading for all Year 7s and 8s. The student book club, RIC RAC, met weekly, and this group enjoyed its annual excursion to our local book supplier, Books in Print, to select titles for the Library. And last but not least, during Book Week 2010 : Across the Story Bridge, we welcomed the young Australian author Jack Heath to the Library. A group of boys from RIC RAC formed a welcoming party for him, and endeavoured to read as many of the titles the Tiverton Library holds prior to meeting him. Jack completely entertained and engaged our Year 7 and 8 students, so that the proverbial pin could be heard dropping. Our print resources remain of excellent quality, currency and relevance, and both print and The RIC RAC club meets author Jack Heath 112
DVD collections are well-used. In particular, loans from the Tiverton Non-Fiction collection increased, maintaining a three-year trend. Loans of the Kinnoull Non-Fiction and Fiction collections also increased in 2010. Our Tiverton Fiction collection focussed this year on acquiring the best of recent releases. Our online resource Echo has enjoyed somewhat of a renaissance, and is very well patronised, particularly at Kinnoull where students and staff appreciate its ability to condense current issues into a dense, compact form, backed by relevant resources. It continues to be available from every networked PC in the Library, the College, and from home via Moodle. This makes good quality, relevant, in-depth information available to all staff and students during the College day, and at home, without having to visit the Library. We continue to strive to provide the best quality, most relevant print and electronic resources for our students and staff, in order to maintain a solid, rigorous collection of depth and breadth. A number of our Year 9 students participated in the D Grade section of the Debating Association of Victoria’s competition. The boys were required to research and then formulate debates on a number of topical and contentious issues throughout Terms 2 and 3. Participating in this competition meant heading out, on often a cold winter’s night, to Camberwell Boys Grammar. The boys also gave up many a lunchtime to prepare. ACC Chess Public Speaking Competition De La Victors! In October, the annual Lasallian Speaking Competition between St Bede’s, St James and De La Salle College was held at St Bede’s College, Mentone. This was the eighth contest between the schools and over the years a healthy rivalry has developed, which has ensured the highest standards of public speaking in this prestigious competition. This year De La Salle was ably represented by Costa Haritos (Year 7), who won his division and Christian Di Donato (Year 8), who not only won the Year 8 competition, but secured the Best Speaker award, securing the overall trophy for De La Salle College. Andre Lew (Year 9) proved to be an engaging, witty and entertaining speaker. Andrew Rappos (Year 10), made effective use of his acting skills to hold his audience enthralled. In Year 11, Joshua Attard demonstrated his ability to think on his feet when he delivered the best impromptu speech of the evening. This secured him victory in the senior division. Jacob Gooden, (Year 12), provided the audience with great entertainment in both of his speeches on the night. Overall, De La Salle won four of the seven categories and with it the title of Lasallian Public Speaking Champions for 2010. I congratulate all team members for the passion, conviction and commitment they have brought to their public speaking. I also congratulate their English teachers who have guided them over the years. Finally, a big thank you to the parents of our team members who have supported the competition and no doubt listened to repeated rehearsals of their sons’ speeches. Well done to all for an excellent evening. Mr Paul Fegan English Coordinator
This year’s chess team has built on the successes of previous years. The junior team has been continually improving with more than 10 regulars who participated in several tournaments. This is a testament to Mr Evans who has worked tirelessly to improve the standard of chess at De La. The year started out at one of the toughest tournaments of the year against Melbourne High and Brighton Grammar, who would go on to be the two best teams in the State. De La came in 4th. During subsequent tournaments we met ACC rivals Mazenod and again battled Melbourne High. Our next tournament was a ‘do or die’ against our Lasallian rivals St James’. At stake was a place in the state finals. The team lifted with 5 of the team’s 10 players registering more than 4.5 points out of 7. We tied with St James’ on 20 points. On a countback De La won. We had made the State finals. Before the state finals was the ACC chess tournament. Having won the Division 2 title last year, we had been promoted to Division 1. We came 6th, winning only 18.5 games out of 56. We were 32 points behind Mazenod 1 and 27 points behind Mazenod 2. The morning of the state finals was a nervous time. We were looking to improve on our 16th place of the previous year. The team consisted of chess stalwarts Daniel Martin, Ben Stott, Iryoung Fan, Nicholas Husek and newcomer Marcus Henriques-Gomes. We had a rough start in the first round with only one player winning a game, but rallied. At the end of the day De La came in at 7th, just half a point off 6th place. Daniel and Ben were consistent each winning 5 games out of 9. Our best player of the day was Iryoung who won 6 games, a top effort. 117

VCAL The 2010 senior VCAL class at De La Salle, has had a very busy and productive year. Having completed their Intermediate VCAL Certificate in Year 11, the senior VCAL program is completed in Year 12, providing graduates with entry into a range of vocational courses at TAFE and elsewhere. This year some of the VCAL senior class will go straight into an apprenticeship and be on their way to starting their careers. This year students have specialized in Sports Management, Building and Construction, Hospitality, Plumbing and Sound Engineering. The exciting aspect of the VCAL program at De La Salle is that the opportunity for learning goes far beyond the recognized certificates our students have earned. Our students develop other skills which will help benefit them in their future study, work and life — being able to communicate with a variety of people, being first-aid trained and equipped to problem-solve in a range of areas. Applied learning opportunities also extend outside the classroom; for example, this year’s senior class
all completed a Barista Course at the Australian Coffee School. In addition to their applied learning program, the boys have also been actively involved in a range of social justice and personal development experiences, which will further enrich their life experience when they have left the College. In particular, under the guidance of Mrs Carmel Dwyer and Mrs Mary Finn, the senior class was given exclusive access to speak to the Commissioners of the Royal Commission into the Black Saturday Bushfires. The boys conducted an exclusive interview with the Commissioners about the importance of community action in response to the fires. The interview was made into a short video which featured in the College’s Social Justice Mass earlier in the year. The boys spent weeks visiting a group of elderly residents at a nearby Aged Care Facility, where they were a welcome addition to the residents’ weekly schedule. Throughout the year, the senior class also organized a number of fund raisers for the College’s various social justice initiatives, including a Coolies versus Schoolies Basketball Match, a sausage sizzle for Mission Action Day and a very successful pancake day for Shrove Tuesday. Throughout the year, the boys raised more than $2,000 for social justice initiatives. Like VCE, the VCAL program relies on the support of the whole College community, in particular the College Leadership Team, whose ongoing 120
support for VCAL as an applied alternative to the academic VCE provides many boys with a real pathway in their senior years at De La Salle. On behalf of the graduating senior VCAL class, I would like to thank the dedicated and professional team of teachers and staff who have worked with the boys this year. First of all, my special thanks to the administrative staff at Kinnoull, Mrs Trish Woodman, Mrs Ann Lawler, Mrs Sandy Glazebrook, and Mrs Patricia D’Arcy, as well as the pathways team, Mrs Carmel Smart and Mrs Caroline Fitzpatrick. My thanks go to the wonderful VCAL teaching team including, Mrs Carmel Dwyer, Mr Tim Brodrick, Mr Charles Thompson, Mr Sam Devenish, Mr Warren Walker, Mr Peter Harte, Mr Chris Martin, Mr Paul Maxted, Mrs Esther Gmelig and Mr Gerard Jackson. These teachers continue to challenge and inspire our VCAL students who should be proud of their achievements. Congratulations to the graduating VCAL class of 2010. Ms Kerry Martin VCAL Coordinator
VET De La Salle parents and students should be proud of the commitment our boys have shown to the Applied Learning area throughout 2010. This was evident at the Applied Learning Awards held in October at Woodlands Golf Club where six De La Salle College students were nominated for their successful involvement in a VET study area. Callum Nugent (Year 12) was a successful recipient in the area of Hospitality. Involvement in a VET study allows the student to experience a range of learning environments and hands-on education, which is very much part of the total educational experience in the 21st Century. This year students have been successful in combining an applied learning subject as part of their VCE Program or their VCAL Certificate Program. Upon completion students receive a nationally recognized qualification. Students have displayed varying interests in an array of fields — Engineering, Electrotechnology, Furnishing, Music Industry Foundation and Production, Digital Media, Sport and Recreation, Building and Construction, Automotive Studies, CSICO and Hospitality. It has been a privilege to observe our students’ success in many different learning settings, whether it be at work placement, in an industry setting or indepen-

Our goal at De La Salle is to provide a quality career education program designed to deliver planned learning that helps students develop the abilities and skills to make informed decisions about their study at school and beyond, their work options, and their participation in the wider community. To this end the Careers and Pathways team has divided the program tasks into three main areas. — Careers counseling, subject selection and work experience — VET Coordination (Vocational Education and Training) — VCAL Coordination Year 10 students completed a week of work experience as well as a 4-week Careers unit to prepare them for their senior years and help them make more informed career choices. Speakers from a wide range of tertiary and employment sectors made themselves available. Students were assisted with subject and program choices, and Year 12 students and parents were invited to attend a VTAC information evening in August. VET enrolments have continued to rise and the VCAL program promotes strong links with industry as well as the development of work skills. All boys complete work placements in their industry of choice. The program has been extended to include skills in business and event management with a strong emphasis on ‘hands on’ learning. Students practice new skills by completing ‘real’ tasks at school, in the community as volunteers, and at work. Ms Carmel Smart Careers Coordinator

ACC Sport 2010 Once again the sporting year at De La Salle was filled with many highlights and achievements. Much planning and effort was rewarded in 2010 with some outstanding results. Our cricket program proved its strength by winning their first 1st XI title since 1993, breaking a four year run by St Bede’s. This was a most satisfying victory — during my tenure as Director of Sport we have made it a focus to improve the quality of the cricket program. We have achieved this with the help of Mr Martin Rhoden, Mr Dave Hale, Mr Gerard Barns, along with other coaches, and with the support of the Malvern Cricket Club. Our junior programs are establishing good trends and the strength of cricket at the College should continue to grow on this solid platform. We will once again host St Michael’s College, Adelaide, and we look forward to fostering this link between the two Lasallian schools. A second amazing achievement was the two ACC golf titles achieved in 2010. Again, much planning and effort by Mr Norm Stewart and Mr Peter Crellin went into building the profile of the sport here at De La Salle. It was a great achievement to wrest the senior title from St Bede’s, who have won the trophy since its inception. The juniors backed up this success to win our second junior title, which augurs well for the future of golf at the College. Our main carnival teams — swimming, athletics and cross country — all made significant improvements on 2009. The talent in the junior
age groups indicates that with the right attitude and preparation we will soon be challenging for titles in the three carnival sports. Our program has grown significantly over the last couple of years with the introduction of ACC sport at Year 7 and Year 8. I have also tried to introduce ‘B’ teams in the major sports at Year 7 to allow for more students to enjoy the experience of representing the College. For this to have taken place I have had to rely on a small but committed group of staff who willingly give up many hours of their free time to prepare and supervise teams. We are fortunate at the College to have many fine coaches who are passionate about delivering the best program possible. May I take this opportunity to acknowledge their dedication and also their support

of my role as Director of Sport. We congratulate the boys who were chosen as senior captains of their respective sports. These boys have shown a great commitment to sport here at the College and have been wonderful leaders of their peers during their time here. It is a wonderful honour to be recognised as a senior captain of a sporting team and every one of the captains fulfilled their duties admirably. To all the boys who took the opportunity to represent their College in various sporting pursuits, I congratulate you for your achievements and trust you enjoyed the experience. Sport is a great educator and many valuable lessons can be learnt on the playing arena. By simply participating you are already a winner, regardless of the results you achieve. ACC Ski Team The weekend brings the group together — living in close confined accommodation in a lodge required considerable tolerance and independence when cooking meals and getting organized for the next day’s skiing. De La Salle’s results in the Championships could not compete with the expertise and technology displayed by some schools. However, the satisfaction De La Salle team members displayed as they crossed the finish line and the announcer called out their name, school and finishing time was reward enough for their efforts.

2010 Victorian Interschools’ Snow Sports Championship At Mt Buller De La Salle College competed at the 2010 Victorian Interschools’ Snow Sports Championship in the Snowboard and Alpine Skiing Giant Slalom events. De La Salle boys are very enthusiastic about snow sports and have participated in the Alpine Skiing Giant Slalom event for more than 20 years. Often, their families have introduced them to the sport at an early age and so became passionate about their skiing or snowboarding. Sometimes this is the only occasion where they can compete in this type of competition.

This year has been an exciting year in weightlifting at De La Salle. The introduction of a new generation of lifters experiencing the sport for the first time was very rewarding. The team was very competitive, coming second in both the School League and the Sport & Recreation Cup, losing by the narrowest of margins in both cases. In 2010 we farewell Luke Henriques-Gomes, who represented De La Salle on many occasions. Luke also represented Victoria at the U/16, U/18 and U/20 National Championships, and had the honour of representing Australia at the U/18 Commonwealth and Oceania Championships. We also thank Mr Ken Stokes and Mr David Hale for their support of the sport, without whose efforts the successes of the year would not have occurred. There are exciting times ahead at De La Salle with many talented athletes in Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 who should bring us much success in the future. I look forward to witnessing the progress of these young weightlifters. Mr Paul Grace Coach
De La Swim Squad
After a patchy beginning to the 2009/2010 ACC Swimming season, the team tackled what seemed an endless routine of early morning sessions down at the Ashburton pool before school, beginning late in Term 3 ’09. All of our hard work and team building activities were displayed at the ACC Swimming Carnival, held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) in the relatively new outdoor pool. The competition was fierce, with State and National swimmers lining up against us. De La Salle placed 5th at the conclusion of the night, an improvement upon last year, and a testament to the enormous effort displayed by my teammates. As captain for this season, I thank on behalf of the squad Mr Oscar Carlson (coach), Mr Jon Edgar, Ms
Liz Turner and Mr Sam Magree for their hard work throughout the season — we couldn’t have done it without you. I’d also like to thank my fellow captains for their assistance — Garrett McDonough (vice-captain), Matthew Northage (junior captain) and Lachlan Miles (junior vice-captain). Special thanks go to my teammates who put their full efforts into every aspect of our ACC swimming tilt, including those who continually attended training but didn’t make the final team; thanks, of course, to the De La cheer squad, who cheered us on throughout the night — you guys were easily the best cheer squad on the night. I’ll remember this team as a hard-working, tight-knit group of Lasallians who made De La proud on the night, in and out of the pool. Thanks for making this season so memorable, and I wish the best of luck to next year’s swimming squad. Tim Howard Captain 124

ACC Athletics 2010 Training and preparation for the 2010 ACC Athletics carnival began early in Term 1. After an initial struggle with numbers at training, we gradually gained momentum and enthusiasm as we moved closer to the ACC Carnival. Following an overall placing of 5th in 2009, our main priority was to improve on this placing in 2010. Well, mission accomplished! We managed to elevate ourselves to 4th place by the end of the 2010 Carnival. Congratulations to all members of our 2010 Team/Squad for their efforts throughout our training period. All team members represented De La Salle bravely and proudly in front of our incredibly vibrant and supportive De La Salle Cheer Squad, passionately led by Michael Badrock. It was very pleasing to see many of our athletes achieve Personal Best performances at the Carnival.
It gives us great pleasure to congratulate the following students who finished in first place in their respective events: Harrison Lagastes — U/13 800m Jeremy McKay — U/14 Shot Put Will Johns — U/16 100m, U/16 200m Will ran a sizzling time of 12.24 — the fastest 100m time for the day. The 2010 ACC cricket season was an impressive and highly successful one for De La Salle’s First XIs, with De La winning their first Senior Cricket premiership in 17 years. After a lack-lustre round one opener against Parade College, De La Salle’s First XIs finished the season undefeated to beat long-time rivals St Bede’s in the final match. During the year, De La also put in impressive run rates against St Bernard’s, Salesian, Mazenod, St Joseph’s and Whitefriar’s.

With the score at the end of the 34th over 7/129, St Bede’s needed 10 off the last over to win the final. Captain Jarryd Lyons took the ball. The first three balls resulted in singles to take the score to 7/132 with three balls remaining. Everyone was extremely nervous, sweating on every delivery. Lyon’s next two balls were attacked ferociously by the St Bede’s batsman, resulting in two 2’s, taking the score to 7/136, which meant the St Bede’s batsman had to hit the next ball for at least three runs to get his team over the line. Lyon’s last ball was a short one which caught the batsman off guard, sending the ball directly into the capable hands of Mitchell Allamby to win the match. Alex Hay Captain

Year 10 Cricket The season started on a positive note with a close win over Parade at home. From there the boys continued to build momentum and perform admirably during the home and away series. As we placed third after the home and away series, we faced a daunting semi-final at St Bernard’s. During the semi-final the teamed rallied and attacked St Bernard’s batting order. Set a challenging score the team timed their run perfectly and reached St Bernard’s total with wickets in hand. We progressed to the grand final where we faced a fellow Lasallian school. Playing St Bede’s, at St Bede’s, was always going to be a tough task. St Bede’s batted well and posted a decent score. Our boys tried valiantly to chase the runs but fell short. Although it was disappointing to be the runners-up, our boys gave a magnificent effort to make it that far. Mr Paul Harrup Coach

ACC Golf Senior Premiers 2010 De La Salle’s Senior Golf Team has taken out the ACC Golf Premiership for the first time in the competition’s 23-year history. The historic win by the eight-member team at Kingswood Golf Club ended St Bede’s 23-year winning streak. With some solid performances under their belts and recording good performances in the VGA Junior Tournaments, the De La Team was optimistic going into the final. In the past, the hopes of De La Salle as well as all other competitors were dashed by the skill of St Bede’s teams. The tables were turned in 2010, and team De la Salle outplayed St Bede’s to win their first ever ACC Golf flag. The win is a credit to De La Salle’s Golf Coach, Mr Norm Stewart, who nurtured the team to victory. Mr Stewart thanked the players and caddies, congratulating them for the efforts over the lead-up competitions, and their tournament success. The individual scores on the day were Matt Bellion (Captain) (74), Doug Loton (74), Charlie Stewart (75), Alex Stott (81), Sean Del Gorge (84), Josh Vitacca (86), Josh Del Gorge (91) and Matt Tucker (92) Mr Peter Crellin
ACC Golf Junior Premiers 2010 The Junior ACC Golf team led by Charles Stewart had a wonderful day at Werribee Golf Course, winning an ACC Golf Championship for only the second time in the College’s sport history. It has been 8 years since we won our first title. What a special year to win both the Senior and a Junior ACC Golf, a first for the College. The Junior Team won by only 6 shots over St Bede’s College. The best scores of the day were Josh Vitacca (77), Doug Loton (79), Charles Stewart (80), Rawdon Hume (80), Alex Stott (81), Charlie Haley (83), Sean Delgorge (85) and Liam Pezet (87). Our reserves were Nick Chant and Sam Harrington. The team really played solid golf and were under pressure for most of the day with the closeness of the scores and the slow cored greens. This combined success at Junior and Senior level has been an accumulation of many years and is very satisfying for golf enthusiast and Senior Golf Coach, Mr Norm Stewart. Humphrey and Wilson, the Year 11s have been inspired and De La’s football future looks very bright. Over the season more than 18 Year 11 players represented the College in the 1st XVIII, which will give the team a strong base for season 2011 with Williams, Harvey, Soriano and Hamilton playing every game. I would like to take this opportunity to thank every student who represented the College in senior ACC football this year, especially the leadership group led by Jarrod Lyons. Despite the difficulties of the season the students conducted themselves well and were great ambassadors for the College. I would also like to thank the many staff members who assisted throughout the course of the season 2010. Mr Robert Bonnici Coach

Season 2010 started in a very positive fashion with large numbers wanting to represent the College in ACC football. Our season began with an intra-club practice at ‘Basil Street’, the unusually shaped ground we would call home for the season. It was a great opportunity for students to display their skills and impress before our season opener at Geelong against one of the toughest competitors in the competition. The season seemed to get off in positive fashion with De La well led by Captain Jarrod Lyons. The team took control of the game early against the muchfancied opposition, going into half time with a slender lead. Unfortunately from there injuries began to take their toll and, with a depleted bench and tired bodies, our young brigade of runners began to struggle and were quickly overrun.
The following week the team bounced back with Hugh Nicholson starring up forward and the Year 11s and 12s gelling to get the season back on track. With the ACC season so short a second loss the following week meant De La Salle’s hopes of a football Premiership in 2010 were dashed. However, the students’ commitment to represent the College and play with their mates meant there was always a healthy number of players willing to represent the College to the best of their abilities. The season was plagued with narrow losses despite brave efforts from students wanting to play, despite carrying injuries. Our senior players were great role models for the Year 11s. As a result of the leadership of players such as Lyons, Brooks, Nicholson, 134
2nd XVIII 2nd XVIII Football The 2nd XVIII Football Squad comprised well in excess of thirty players, due primarily to vacancies appearing in the senior team over the course of the season. Whilst this allowed the College to reward those who had applied themselves on the training track and performed on match day, it did stretch the College’s playing stocks. Consequently, the fortunes of the 2010 2nd XVIII fluctuated weekly, depending upon the depth of the squad on any given day. The boys finished the season with an even win/loss ratio from their six games, including a dominant 15 goal drubbing of Parade in the playoff round. The young men who represented the College each week should be proud of their efforts over the course of the season. The commitment these young men were prepared to make in returning the debt to the College that has supported them on the sporting field in all their years at secondary school — when others were reluctant to do the same — was most gratifying. Given that two of our three losses were at half strength against eventual grand finalists, it is evident that once the commitment to success from the players is present, De La Salle has the capability to once again be a powerhouse at all levels of ACC Football. Year 10 XVIII ACC Premiers This year, De La Salle’s Year 10 ACC Football team stormed home to win the grand final after an almost unblemished season. Coaches Mr Paul Harrup and Mr Peter Harte said the win was a credit to a very determined and hard working side who “did the College proud”. The final round between De La Salle and Emmanuel College was touch and go in the first half and at quarter-time the scoreboard showed Emmanuel 1 goal, 1 point to De La Salle, 4 goals 4 points. The second quarter however, saw Emmanuel come back early, but De La fought back and went to the half-time break with a 36 point lead. The third quarter ignited the premiership flame for the Blue and Gold that had not burned for three years. And, with the engraver preparing the trophy for its new Malvern home, De La turned on a real premiership third-quarter. At the end of the term De La Salle led by 46 points. Despite a slow fourth quarter, De La recorded a very convincing and much-deserved victory by 39 points. The final scores were De La Salle 14 goals 8 points to Emmanuel College, 8 goals 5 points. ACC Senior Basketball The senior basketball squad entered the 2010 season full of optimism. This was quickly extinguished in Round 1 when we were totally outplayed by a very strong Whitefriar’s (the eventual premiers). Courtesy
of a bye we had the opportunity to regroup and wipe our first-up defeat from our mind and focus on the road trip to Parade (eventual runners up). A promising first half had us close at half time but we were unable to maintain the momentum and Parade stepped up a notch to defeat us comfortably. At this stage it was becoming very clear that this was a ‘vintage’ year, of standards seldom seen in ACC Basketball. It was great to get on the scoreboard with a confidence-building win over CBC. It was pleasing to see our offensive plays come off and we started to gel as a team. St Bede’s was our next challenge, another talented team, and again we hung in there for three quarters before St Bede’s 138
proved too strong in the end. It was pleasing to see significant improvement. An excellent win against Emmanuel in the final round ensured that we finished the season on a high. Undoubtedly the highlight of the season occurred in the final round when one of the Emmanuel players performed an unbelievable monster dunk ‘in traffic’. It sent the crowd into raptures and will live on in the memories of all those who witnessed it. Congratulations to all students who represented the College in basketball this year. They were ably led by Simon Woodcock (c) with David Windley leading scorer. Good improvement was shown by Year 11 players Dylan Morgan and Pat Hanney. The B Team struggled against some very talented and taller teams during the season. It was pleasing to be able to give opportunities to the many students who committed themselves to the squad. Simon Hearn and Michael Bohan were excellent contributors all season and were rewarded with a game in the A team for the final round. 2010 has been a great season for Year 9 ACC Basketball at De La Salle. Both teams (A and B) played throughout the season with great consistency and application to qualify for the ACC Grand Finals at MSAC in August. Team A were defeated on the buzzer in the final match of the regular season by Parade. As this was our first defeat for the season, we had the opportunity for quick revenge as we fronted up to Parade again in the grand final. The boys were really switched on from the off and led for the entire match. Parade made a late challenge but we managed to maintain our advantage and record a much deserved three point victory. Congratulations to the following Year 9 2010 ACC Basketball Premiership Team: Ben Ayre (c), Geremy McKay, Jerome Lugo, Jack Heatley, Christian Lymbouris, Joel Stewart, Simrat Singh and Shaun Nolan.
Team B lost only one match for the season against St Bernard’s. As this was our only defeat, we did earn the opportunity to meet them again in the Grand Final. Despite De La Salle leading for most of the match, the scores were tied at 44 each at the final buzzer. After three minutes of overtime, we were overrun and lost by four points. Although the boys just fell short of winning, they can be very proud of their efforts and spirit on the day. Congratulations to the following Year 9 2010 ACC Basketball Runners Up Team: Adam Pentifallo (c), Campbell Jones, Stephen Galgani, Dylan Cowan, Jack Hanley, Pat Stanton, Calvin Jackson, Luke Toniolo and Lawrence Twirdy. Well done to a number of other Year 9 boys who represented De La Salle in ACC Basketball throughout Term 3 and contributed to the overall success of both teams. Thank you to James Watts (Year 10) who assisted me with the organisation and management of the teams throughout the season. Mr Peter Harte Coach

The Victorian Schools Cycling Championships The Victorian Schools Cycling Championships (VSCC) has become a regular fixture in the De La Salle sporting calendar over the last five years. This year we returned to Port Melbourne to compete at the North West Metro Zone Final. The track at the Go Kart Club of Victoria was excellent viewing for the spectators, not so friendly for our cyclists, who found the extremely technical course rather challenging. Although numbers were a little down this year, the same cannot be said for the enthusiasm and competitiveness of our boys. Veteran competitor Alex Lalande of Year 10 was back for his fourth consecutive VSCC, this time joined by his younger brother who raced for St Patrick’s Primary School. Our ‘professional’ racers, Jonathan Dent, Jayden Cooper and Harrison Dziubinski were back with their wind trainers, club racing gear and cycling stories. We were joined by a couple of ‘newbies’; Quinn De Luca, Will Johns, Patrick McCaffrey, Rob O’Brien and Joel Whitehead. As mentioned, the track was not so easily negotiated. Designed with go karts in mind, the only endearing feature (apart from the clear views for spectators) was the smooth bitumen surface! The track is only 1km long, comprising four turns and three hair-pin bends, one of which is located down the end of the downhill straight! A little like the Formula ones at Monaco, the most crucial part of the race was to get out in front and try and stay there! Although none of our boys finished top three in their age group, there were some excellent results on the day. Jayden and Jonathan finished 4th and 5th respectively in their U15 Racing event. The boys were
in the mix with the leading group but were beaten in the sprint to the finish. It was a similar story for Harrison, who finished 6th in the U17 Racing event. Harrison spent the majority of the race trying to hang on to the lead bunch. On the last lap, he overtook the group and jumped to a small lead. Unfortunately, he hesitated a little on the back straight, and the older cyclists took advantage, taking back the lead. Will, Alex and Joel finished 4th, 5th and 6th respectively in their U/17 Novice event. Thank you to Mr Terry Atkins, for his annual bus driving duties, and to all of the parents who came to watch and support their sons. A fun day was had by all. Ms Karen Harding Coordinator
30th de Castella Run This year we had an extremely keen and motivated group of senior boys who regularly attended both the Tuesday ‘speed’ and Thursday ‘6km loop’ cross country sessions. The de Castella Run is held to help raise money for vitally important mental health research for the Monash Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre (MAPrc).
It is organised by Anthony de Castella, the brother of marathon runner Rob de Castella. Anthony is Research Manager and a Research Fellow at MAPrc. Additionally, he coaches track, cross country and distance runners for the Old Xaverians Athletics Club. The event includes 5km, 10km and 15km races to allow maximum participation from runners of all fitness levels. It was a fast race start, with the 700-plus runners making the most of the steep descent for the first kilometre. The course was scenic but very hilly, outand-back along Kew Boulevard commencing at Burke Hall. At the 5km turnaround point Albert was leading the runners with another competitor; James, Nathan and Liam were not too far behind them. The overall final results for the 5km run were: Albert Prendergast-Kruger (Floggers) 2nd 17:38 James Birrell (Floggers) 5th 18:17 Nathan Beaumont (Floggers) 9th 19:08 Liam Sharp (No Regrets) 10th 19:25 Jimmy McCaffrey (No Regrets) 17th 20:49 Tom Bishop (No Regrets) 19th 21:17 Alex Hay (Floggers) 20th 21:36 Garrett McDonough (Floggers) 21st 21:49 Michael Galgani (No Regrets) 26th 22:38 All the boys recorded excellent times for the hilly course, Albert running at a 3:31/km pace! The “Floggers” won the Schoolboys team category comfortably by three minutes. Apart from competing, it would be safe to say that the highlight of the morning for a majority of the Year 12 competitors was the free post-run massage and the free BBQ! Thanks to all parents who had to get up early on a Sunday morning to drive their sons to the event. Special thanks to Michael Sharp for the photo of our runners with ‘Deeks’. Ms Karen Harding

The Senior Table Tennis squad didn’t have much success this year, despite the coaching prowess of Mr Gerard Jackson. He used all his skills, wit and charm to push the senior boys to the limit, yet still it was not enough. Their limit was 0 wins from 6 attempts. It has to said, however, that games against Whitefriar’s, C.B.C., St Kilda, and St Paul’s, Altona, all went down to the wire. All in all the boys represented the College in an exceptional manner. Well done coach Jackson! Ms Hannah Curtis

ACC CROSS COUNTRY In September, 60 students from Years 7–12 represented De La Salle at the ACC Cross Country Carnival at Bundoora Park. Many of our runners recorded personal bests and the team managed to finish in 3rd place again this year. We succeeded in improving our overall aggregate score and moved closer to the top two schools, St Bede’s (1st) and St Bernard’s (2nd). There were some great individual efforts by De La Salle boys on the day, none better than Harry Lagastes (Year 7) who won the Under 13 event (3km) in a time of 10.32 minutes. Well done Harry — your spirit and determination is an inspiration to everyone! Special mention to the following team members who finished in the Top Ten in their respective events:

Next year promises a lot more, if Anastasio can resist the lure of an audacious swoop by the Aussie Rules code for his services. For all the peaks and troughs, the boys always played in the right spirit and this was never better exhibited than in their last game when they took to the field to play St Joseph’s, North Melbourne. The game would be St Joseph’s final match as a school before closure and in a true act of sportsmanship, De La gave them a gift to remember, conceding 7 goals and only answering with 1. Thankfully there are no further school closures planned next year so the result may be one for the vaults. Roll on 2011. Mr James Walton Coach

Senior Hockey 2010 Coming into our final season of ACC hockey, the boys in the first XI were hopeful of another successful year, making the finals again and, hopefully, overcoming rivals, St Bernard’s. Since Year 9 our team had won many games and ended up in the grand final twice and semi finals once, losing to St Bernard’s twice and Parade once respectively. Week 1 we came up against Whitefriar’s who had an Australian Youth representative missing; this gave
us a great opportunity to start off with a win. We won 3–2 with goals from Clifford and Camilleri. However, we soon lost our season dream of a premiership by losing three games straight! We were in the lead at some point in all games, but with numerous defenders missing from week to week we were constantly under the pump. Our defence certainly put up a great fight with Matt Trenery a consistent performer.

It has been a fantastic effort over the four years from the boys. I would like to give a special mention to Dom Barker and Ben Siragusano who both came out of retirement to represent De La for one last time. Humanities Bridging Space and Time Hollywood has released a film about the birth of Facebook. If Facebook were a country, it would be the world’s third largest by population — more than five hundred million people. And the social networking website has not yet celebrated its seventh birthday. What has that got to do with learning humanities at De La Salle in 2010? Well, digital technologies are transforming all our lives at an astonishing pace. Our students are busy being born into this new age and, perhaps, taking it for granted. Mobile phones, ipods, computers can provide terrific opportunities to enhance learning, provided we are in charge, not just passive, distracted consumers in a virtual world. That makes our subjects more relevant than ever. Year 7 brought new experiences and challenges for our students in 2010. For most it is the first time they have studied History and Geography as separate subjects. Students brought to this their curiosity, intelligence, skills, values and existing understanding of their world. We teachers aimed to introduce students to other real worlds, in time and space. We studied not just local neighbourhoods and family histories,
but investigated life in Ancient Egypt and Ancient Rome, mastered mapping and wondered at the human impact on endangered species. Skills developed, values clarified, understanding grew. The journey continued for our older students. Year 8s learnt about change, and cause and effect for Europeans living a thousand years ago. They met da Vinci, Copernicus and Martin Luther, (and some visitors in armour) recognizing their achievements and how they helped their own and later generations find and make their own identity. They investigated a plethora of natural disasters from bushfires to tsunamis, seeking smarter ways to plan for trouble. The Year 9s focused on some key issues in Australian History, particularly the blood, sweat and tears of a world war and its impact on our new nation, and the struggle of the first Australians to gain equal rights. In Geography we looked at sustainability for Australia, analysing needs for energy, water and the issue of climate change. Our Year 10 historians met survivors of Adolf Hitler’s Holocaust, whilst the geographers engaged in fieldwork in Westernport Bay. The VCE students grappled with the Vietnam War, American Civil Rights, Revolutions, Renaissance Cities, Political Studies and Philosophy. Aaron Sorkin, the writer of The Social Network, gives the audience three different versions of the Facebook story. If De La students have learnt their Humani148
ties well, they should be equipped to make sense of a world with different truths, to be empowered critical thinkers in any career, to act with empathy and understanding, and memory and vision. Mr Chris Fleming Humanities Coordinator
Mary MacKillop Enhancement Centre In 2010, the staff of the Mary MacKillop Enhancement Centre (MMEC) have worked persistently and enthusiastically with students with special learning needs to assist them in accessing the curriculum. We believe that all students can experience success when learning outcomes are based on realistic and achievable goals. The words of our patron, St Mary of the Cross, echo the attitude and reflect the commitment of the MMEC staff, “We must teach more by example than by word.” (1867) This year, the staff included teachers — Mrs Jacinta Ryan, Mrs Gemma Austin, Ms Sandra Troise, Mrs Eve McLellan, Mrs Carmel Dwyer, Br Lawrence King; and Learning Support Officers: Mrs Karen Tillotson, Ms Carolyn Hamilton, Ms Jacqueline Irwin, Mrs Esther Gmelig, Mr Simon Lloyd, Ms Muriel West, Mrs Freda Siomos, Mrs Gabrielle Windley, Mrs Melanie Livera, Ms Stella Angelico and Mr Christopher Windley. This team of dedicated educators works with students who have intellectual, social, emotional, physical or severe language needs, across all year levels, from Primary to Year 12. Each member of the team collaborates with staff and parents to identify and facilitate the individual learning needs of the students. Regular Program Support Group [PSG] meetings occur for students who qualify for Integration funding, where issues of academic planning and pastoral care are discussed with parents. Decisions from these meetings are implemented by MMEC staff, parents and teachers, to enhance student learning and maximise effective teaching. Many other PSG meetings also occur for students who are identified with special needs. This year, the Literacy Support classes continued with four groups at Years 7, 8, and 9, and two groups at Year 10, with a total enrolment of 95 students. These students have experienced the expertise of the MMEC teaching staff in assisting them to improve their literacy skills.

The Numeracy Support Program, which was initiated in 2008, continued throughout Years 7 and 8. Students who were nominated by their Maths teachers as needing assistance, and those identified through the Allwell testing, were given the opportunity to withdraw from one period of Religious Education each week to work with Br Lawrence to enhance their Maths skills. This program was delivered to 45 students. In the Primary area, Mrs Gemma Austin again worked with small groups of students in the General Language Skills classes to help improve their literacy skills. This proved extremely successful and productive. This year, we introduced a new format for writing Individual Learning Plans (I.L.P.s) through the new Moodle program. This is a mandated directive from the Catholic Education Office for students who are funded under the Literacy, Numeracy and Special 149
Learning Needs Program. Workshop sessions for the new teaching staff were facilitated by the MMEC staff at the beginning of the year in the areas of modifying work tasks and exams, and writing I.L.P.s. The I.L.P.s are now written for each semester and emailed to the parents prior to the PSG meeting where possible. The support and cooperation of the Principal, Br Paul Rogers, Deputy Principal, Peter Riordan, Assistant Principal Stephen Young, Head of Kinnoull Sally Buick, Head of Tiverton John McAlroy, VELS Coordinator Sandra Troise, Year Level Coordinators, all teaching staff, Library and Information Technology staff, has been invaluable in encouraging and supporting the work of the MMEC staff. I wish to thank my fantastic team for their caring dedication, perseverance and professionalism as they work to enhance the lives of our students. Mrs Kathie Holmes MMEC Coordinator
Languages at De La Salle Dante Alighieri
Tour to Italy
The Italian students competed in the Dante Alighieri Poetry Recital Competition at Melbourne University and the French students in the Berthe Mouchette Poetry Competition at the Alliançe Française. Both these competitions take many hours of preparation on the part of the students and the contest is always fierce, with schools from all over Melbourne taking part. To their credit, students in languages prepared for their competition whilst preparing for their Semester 1 exams — an exercise that cannot have been easy. Congratulations must go to each of them for just taking up the challenge! Senior students took up the contest wholeheartedly, even with the interruption to their regular study pattern. The experience is a worthwhile exercise in preparation for the Oral VCE Exams. Well done to all students for stepping out of their comfort zone. Kath Marino LOTE Coordinator
This year’s Italian Cultural Exchange provided 21 students with the opportunity to experience the ‘real’ Italy — staying with Italian families and soaking up the culture, cuisine and artistic wonders of Venice, Rome, Siena, Assisi and Florence. The nineteen-day tour took in visits to the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the Basilica of St Francis of Assisi and St Peter’s in Rome. From the initial gondola ride in Venice, the visits to museums and awe-inspiring churches, bargaining with shop keepers when purchasing the best fashion items in the world, through to a Papal Benediction on Palm Sunday in St Peter’s Square, the tour was inspiring. Visual Arts teacher and tour leader, Mr David Happ, said the highlight of the tour was discussing Michelangelo’s ‘Holy family’ in front of the original work in the Uffizi Galley in Florence. “Undoubtedly the highlight for the students was their home stay with their families in Siena,” he said. Eleven days of going to school and experiencing the best of Tuscany with their peers was an opportunity that they all appreciated. As one student said, “You are actually aware of how special this is, how lucky you are, and how happy you are…and while you are doing it”. Kath Marino LOTE Coordinator 54 150
Tour to France
L’excursion de la classe de français
The De La Salle French exchange, led by French teacher Mr Thierry Moran, had an enriching and memorable three-week trip to Paris and the northwest of France. Students were overcome by the splendours of Paris, which included a climb up the Eiffel Tower and a boat ride down the Seine, visits to the Louvre and the Royal Palace at Versailles and its gardens on a mild and sunny spring day. After three days in Paris the group departed for Rennes in Brittany, their main destination in northern France. Students experienced life in an ordinary French family. They observed and took part in school life at the Lycee De La Salle in Rennes (founded and run by De La Salle brothers, it is now a very successful professional educational establishment which prepares young men and women between the ages of 15 and 25 for administrative and technical careers). In Rennes, the boys furthered their knowledge of cultural life and explored the north coast of Brittany, including the enclosed ‘Corsaire’ city of St Malo and the Mont St Michel.
