T
he sea is part of the Triestini’s DNA, and an element that pervades every aspect of the city’s life: one can feel its scent in winter, admire its vigour on a Bora day, capture its beauty in a picture at sunset, enjoy the cool seaside breeze at lunch or during a stroll. It is the needle of the city’s compass. Even when you cannot see it, you only need to walk down one of the streets of the city centre, paying attention to the house numbers: they start from the seaside, bottom up, even numbers on the left, odd numbers to the right. This is how the sea wanders into Trieste. Summer is the season of the sea, when the Triestini pour onto the waterfront, filling it from the mythical Pedocin (beloved seaside establishment, also known as La Lanterna, historically famous for preserving its original separated access for women and men), through Barcola and Grignano bay, all the way to the Costiera [lit. coastline]. There are those who enjoy climbing down steep trails to conquer their isolated spot on the rocky shore, while others prefer the comfort of the numerous “bagni” [i.e. seaside facilities]. Do not expect, however, anything resembling the 26
typical sandy beaches of the rest of the Adriatic coastline: pedalo, beach paddles, and water slides have no use here. Trieste’s seaside is for swimming and diving there is even an entirely autochthonous diving style called clanfa (local vernacular for “horseshoe”), owing its name to the position of the diver, who rolls up into a mid-air squat and hits the surface trying to generate the highest possible splash of water. Should you grow tired of swimming and diving, you may want to book a snorkelling tour at the Miramare marine reserve Area Marina Protetta di Miramare (www.ampmiramare.it), to explore the underwater world and learn about its many dwellers, under the expert guidance of the Biodiversitario Marino team. In the months of July and August there are daily outings on the weekend departing from Miramare’s shore, as well as spectacular walks at sunset along the water edge, leaving every Wednesday from Grignano. Participants only need to bring their gear (mask, snorkel, and flippers) and be able to swim, to experience this unique sea-watching tour at the foot of Miramare Castle. Experienced swimmers may also choose between free diving and scuba diving sessions.
Se tuttavia tuffi e bracciate non vi sembrano un’attività abbastanza intensa il consiglio è quello di prenotare lo snorkeling presso l’Area Marina Protetta di Miramare. — Should you grow tired of swimming and diving, you may want to book a snorkelling tour at the Miramare marine reserve.
