του ουρανού, το μισό του πλανήτη να αγωνίζεται να υπάρξει και να πείσει για την δικαιολογημένη ανθρώπινη υπόστασή του και τη χρησιμότητά του στην κοινωνία; Γιατί το Ισλάμ τις θέλει υποταγμένες και αθόρυβες; Γιατί η «μάνα» η χιλιοσέβαστη λιθοβολείται στον 21ο αι.; Γιατί η ζωή της γυναικείας ύπαρξης πρέπει να κρύβεται ως μυστήριο; Πυρ, γυνή και θάλασσα. Τα δύο ισχυρά στοιχεία της φύσης ταυτίζονται με τη γυναίκα στη συνείδηση των ανδρών από τη Γένεση αυτού του κόσμου. Όλοι μιλούν για ισότητα αλλά άνδρες και γυναίκες δεν απολαμβάνουν τα ίδια δικαιώματα στην πράξη. Σε όλο τον δυτικό κόσμο οι άνδρες σκοτώνουν γυναίκες χωρίς δεύτερη σκέψη. Ο νόμος σε ισλαμικές χώρες επιτρέπει στις δυνάμεις ασφαλείας να συλλαμβάνουν γυναίκες για «τους πιο ασήμαντους λόγους», όπως το να φορούν παντελόνια, να μην φορούν χιτζάμπ δημοσίως ή να συναναστρέφονται με άνδρες. Στη Βόρεια Κορέα οι γυναίκες που φορούν φούστες πρέπει να διασφαλίζουν ότι τα γόνατά τους καλύπτονται. Στο διάσημο Σορέντο της Ιταλίας απαγορεύθηκαν τα μπικίνι επικαλούμενοι ότι οι ντόπιοι αισθάνονται «δυσφορία και ανησυχία». Λένε ότι οι γυναίκες κατηγορούνται διαρκώς ότι παίρνουν τα πράγματα προσωπικά. Δεν μπορώ να δω πιο έντιμο τρόπο να τα παίρνουν. Δεν μπορώ να δω πιο έντιμη βαθιά ανθρώπινη πράξη από την εξέγερση των γυναικών του Ιράν, στη μνήμη της 22χρονης Μαχσά Αμίνι, που βάζει στο κέντρο την καταπίεση και τη βαρβαρότητα του καθεστώτος απέναντι στη γυναίκα. Μαζί με τις γυναίκες του Ιράν, μαζί με τις γυναίκες που σπουδάζουν, εργάζονται, αγωνίζονται, γεννούν και αναθρέφουν παιδιά που αγαπούν και σέβονται τις γυναίκες και όχι τους δήμιους τους. Fire, woman, and sea…

Why are men so afraid of women? Why should half of the sky, and half of the planet struggle to exist and convince of its justified human status and its usefulness in society?

Why does Islam demand their submission and silence? Why do we stone mothers in the twenty-first century? Why should a woman's existence be veiled in secrecy? Fire, woman, and sea. The two powerful elements of nature have been identified with women in the consciousness of men since the Genesis of this world. Despite all the talk of equality, men and women do not actually have the same rights.

Men murder women mindlessly all over the western world. Morality police may detain women for "the most trivial grounds" under Islamic law, including wearing trousers, not wearing a hijab in public, or mingling with men. Women who wear skirts in North Korea are required to cover their knees.

Bikinis have been banned in Italy's renowned Sorrento due to "discomfort and worry" among the locals. They say that women are too sensitive and take things personally. I don't see how they could interpret things differently.

The Iranian women's movement, which puts the injustice and brutality of the dictatorship against women at the forefront and honors 22-year-old Masha Amini, is the sincerest and truly human gesture I can think of.

Together with the women of Iran, together with the women who study, work, struggle, give birth, and raise children who love and respect women and not their executioners.

«Women can’t live on chiffon alone»

Τhe “goddess” dresses she was long known for gave ground to day-to-day wardrobe essentials. The shift was driven by the casualization of style and Ferretti’s newfound conviction that women can’t live on chiffon alone.

“Now, women want to live”, she said, using words like personality and identity. Her trousers are as full as ankle-length skirts, her sweaters are lacquered to look like “glacial light,” and her use of “eco-fur” is prodigious. Hot metallics, the lapis turtleneck with royal blue duster coat, and matching hat.

Ferretti’s trademark of lightness, was missing. The evening dresses that closed the show found her back on familiar ground: inserting lace into silver lamé plissé, trimming the cuffs of a chiffon dress with deep rings of feathers, adding dramatic but playful caped hoods.

you decided to create a significant project in London by launching Gallery Eight. Why London?

London is a multicultural city, so it's like a smaller version of New York, with all the different cultures converging there.

■ Did you plan to promote Greek artists from the start, or did something happen that led you to do so?

I must say that I never intended to promote artists, in general. I came from a completely different industry and exclusively worked in the family business when I was in London. My parents were art collectors as myself, but I never considered getting involved in the promotion of artists. I'm very Greek, so when I heard, "Well, does Greece have art," it really bothered me. Of course, Greece has art! It is the country with amazing ancient monuments that have influenced the whole art world.

When I advise a client that a piece of art will be worth more in two or three years, I make sure that this is undoubtedly a fact

I became well known when I exclusively took on Winston Branch, a very well-known British Caribbean artist in England and worldwide, and when I collaborated with Philip Tsiaras, who is one of the most famous Greek American artists and makes us proud worldwide. These two artists brought me a lot of publicity and guided me with their wisdom and experience so that I was able to establish relationships of trust with very large galleries and make a convincing argument that I have a good judgment. That's how I was able to introduce the Greek artists, abroad.

■ Όταν αποφάσισες να ασχοληθείς με την τέχνη, ενώ ήσουν ήδη στην οικογενειακή επιχείρηση, αισθάνθηκες ότι βρήκες το δρόμο σου; Πολύ καλή ερώτηση, γιατί έχω περάσει από σαράντα κύματα. Βέβαια πάντα το σταθερό ήταν ότι από 16 χρόνων είμαι στην οικογενειακή επιχείρηση και ακόμη φυσικά είμαι. Αλλά στο ενδιάμεσο έχω περάσει από την πολιτική, μετά το πρώτο πτυχίο έκανα ένα δεύτερο και μετά ένα τρίτο και συνέχεια ψαχνόμουν, αλλά

δεν ήξερα τι ήταν ακριβώς αυτό που έψαχνα. Έχασα χρόνο, αλλά έχω βρει πραγματικά αυτό που αγαπώ. Επίσης, μου δόθηκε η ευκαιρία να αποδείξω ποια είμαι -γιατί έχει σημασία- γιατί στην Ελλάδα για όσους με ξέρουν πάντα θα είμαι η κόρη του Ρόζα που έχουν τα ορυχεία στη Φλώρινα. Στο Λονδίνο είμαι η Βαρβάρα και για πολλούς η “V” γιατί δεν μπορούν να πουν το Βαρβάρα. Αυτό είναι μεγάλη ικανοποίηση, να μη σε ξέρουν λόγω του περιβάλλοντος, αλλά να σε ξέρουν γιατί είσαι

When you decided to go into art, while you were already in the family business, did you feel like you had found your way? Very good question because I have gone through fire and water. I've been working in the family business since I was 16 years old, and I still am. However, in between, I had a political career and after finishing my first degree, I pursued a second and then a third, and I was constantly looking, but I wasn't sure what I was looking for. I wasted time, but I finally found what I love. Additionally, I was given the opportunity to establish my iden-

tity, which is important because in Greece, I will always be known as the daughter of “Roza family” the owner of the mines in Florina. In London, I am Varvara and for many "V" because they can- not pronounce Varvara. Being appreciated for who you are rather than where you came from, offers a lot of satisfaction.

■ Είσαι μια γυναίκα ηγέτης. Αυτό τρομοκρατεί τους άνδρες; Ναι, ναι, πάρα πολύ. Αναπόφευκτα ο άνδρας που θα είναι δίπλα σου πρέπει να έχει μεγάλη αυτοπεποίθηση, αν θέλεις να είναι και πάνω από σένα. Και δεν μιλάω οικονομικά, μιλάω πνευματικά. Κάποιος μπορεί να είναι ζάμπλουτος αλλά να έχει έλλειψη παιδείας και κοινωνικής μόρφωσης. Όταν μέσα στη σχέση μπαίνει ο ανταγωνισμός τότε δεν υφίσταται σχέση. Και όταν σου τίθενται και διλήμματα του τύπου «μείωσε τη δουλειά σου ή εγώ», αναπόφευκτα θα επιλέξεις τη δουλειά σου. Διότι το ένα δεν έχει σχέση με το άλλο και αν κάποιος σε αγαπάει πραγματικά δεν σου θέτει τέτοια διλλήματα. Αλλά καμία γυναίκα όσο δυναμική και να είναι δεν παύει να θέλει το ρομαντισμό. Δεν παύει να είναι το κοριτσάκι που θέλει την αγκαλιά του καλού της.

■ You are a female leader. Does this terrify men?

Yes, yes, and yes. Inevitably, the man who stands next to you must be confident enough if not superior. I don't mean financially? I mean spiritually. One can be wealthy while lacking in education and social skills. When competition enters the picture, the relationship is ended. When faced with dilemmas between "your job or me," you will undoubtedly choose your work. Because one has nothing to do with the other, and if someone truly loves you, he will not put you in such situation. But no woman, no matter how powerful is, ever loses her need for romance. She never stops being the little girl who longs to be in the arms of her man. ■

■ Πες μου για τη συνεργασία σου με τα auction houses Christie’s και Sotheby’s; Ξεκίνησε πριν από ενάμιση χρόνο, λόγω του Winston Branch, και σε συνεργασία με τον Αντιπρόεδρο των Christie’s ξεκινήσαμε να δουλεύουμε δημοπρασίες για κάποιους από τους καλλιτέχνες μου. Στην αρχή ήμουν πολύ διστακτική, διότι μια δημοπρασία είναι δίκοπο μαχαίρι. Όμως, λόγω της μεγάλης επιτυχίας της πρώτης μου δημοπρασίας του Winston Branch, όπου με αρχική εκτίμηση 40-60 χιλιάδες λίρες Αγγλίας, το έργο πουλήθηκε στις 150 χιλιάδες λίρες, εδραιώθηκε η συνεργασία με τους Christies και ακολούθησε η αντίστοιχη με τους Sotheby’s.

■ Πόσο σημαντική είναι η εμπιστοσύνη όταν πουλάς τέχνη και πως τη χτίζεις; Είναι το πιο σημαντικό και χωρίς αυτή δεν υπάρχεις. Κάνω επενδυτική τέχνη και όχι διακοσμητική. Όταν συμβουλέψω ένα πελάτη να αγοράσει ένα έργο τέχνης γιατί σε δύο τρία χρόνια θα έχει μεγαλύτερη αξία, φροντίζω να είναι αλήθεια και να του το αποδεικνύω. Έτσι χτίζεται η εμπιστοσύνη, δια της αποδείξεως. Ο ένας πελάτης, σου φέρνει τον άλλο. Το word of mouth εξακολουθεί να είναι πολύ σημαντικό. Είναι τόσο μικρός ο κύκλος που αν χάσεις την εμπιστοσύνη, βγαίνεις εκτός, μπαίνεις στη μαύρη λίστα και δεν επανέρχεσαι.

■ How important is “trust” when selling art and how do you build it?

It is of a great importance, as you cannot exist in the art world without it. I specialize in investment art rather than decorative art. When I advise a client that a piece of art will be worth more in two or three years, I make sure that this is undoubtedly a fact. That is how trust is established. One client refers you to another. Word of mouth remains incredibly important. The art circle is so small that if you lose trust, you're out, blacklisted, and never come back.

■ Are you planning to open a gallery in Athens?

■ Tell me about your collaboration with the auction houses Christie's and Sotheby's. It started a year and a half ago, due to Winston Branch, and in collaboration with the Vice President of Christie's we started working on auctions for some of my artists. At first, I was very hesitant, because an auction is a doubleedged knife. But due to the great success of my first Winston Branch auction, where with an initial estimate of 40-60 thousand pounds, the artwork ended up selling for 150 thousand pounds, the collaboration with Christie's was established and a similar one with Sotheby's followed.

■ In these six years that you have been involved in art, which people have influenced you?

My parents, especially my mother, gave me the necessary skills to become who I am. She has been my rock throughout this journey, never allowing me to give up despite the difficulties I faced at the beginning. She is the one who always stands by my side and encourages me with a smile, wise advice, and good judgment. In addition, my sister is my other half since I am chaotic, and she is extremely well organized and rational. Additionally, I've gained a lot of knowledge by working with big galleries and art dealers who have become excellent friends and business partners. I observe individuals along the road and learn from them.

■ Αν έπρεπε να συμβουλεύσεις μια γυναίκα που θέλει να

you had to give advice to a woman who wants to make a new start in her life, what would you tell her? To dare. To do what she loves and to dare. ■ Ποια είναι τα σχέδια σου το Νοέμβριο στο Μονακό; Στο Μονακό θα γίνει ένα πολύ ωραίο charity gala που αποτελεί θεσμό και γίνεται τα τελευταία δέκα χρόνια από το Viva Nova club σε συνεργασία με το φιλανθρωπικό οργανισμό του Πρίγκηπα Αλβέρτου. Φέτος, θα συνεργαστώ με τους οργανωτές σε μία αμιγώς Ελληνική βραδιά, με έργα του Φίλιππου Τσιάρα, που θα φιλοτεχνήσει το πορτρέτο της Γκρέις Κέλλυ, για τα σαράντα χρόνια από το θάνατο της, το οποίο θα δημοπρατηθεί και τα έσοδα θα πάνε στο ίδρυμα. Το πορτρέτο της μητέρας του θα παρουσιάσει ο Πρίγκηπας Αλβέρτος. Θα ακολουθήσει fashion show με ρούχα του σχεδιαστή μας Βασίλη Ζούλια

■ What do you have planned for Monaco in November?

A highly elegant charity event will be hosted in Monaco, continuing a tradition started by the Viva Nova club and Prince Albert's charitable organization, ten years ago. This year,

I'll be collaborating with the event organizers on an evening that will be entirely Greek, and includes artwork by Philip Tsiaras, who will be painting a Grace Kelly portrait for the 40th anniversary after her death. Prince Albert will be unveiling the painting of his mother. There will be also a fashion show by our famous designer Vassilis Zoulias.

■ Με όλα αυτά που κάνεις έχεις ελεύθερο χρόνο για σένα; Ελεύθερο χρόνο έχουμε όταν το επιλέξουμε. Όταν επιλέξω να κάνω μία παύση θα φροντίσω να περάσω όμορφα με τους φίλους μου και με την οικογένεια μου. Σίγουρα, να πάω να παίξω τένις που με εκτονώνει πολύ, ειδικά όταν είμαι σε ένταση, να πάω στο γυμναστήριο, τα απλά, τα καθημερινά. Όμως σπάνια προσπαθώ να ξεφύγω από το art business, ενώ συχνά προσπαθώ να ξεφύγω από το family business και χρησιμοποιώ το art business που για μένα είναι ένα ωραίο διάλειμμα. Έχω κάνει το χόμπι μου επάγγελμα και νιώθω μία απόλυτη ευτυχία και χαλάρωση.

■ Do you have time for yourself with everything you do?

We have free time when we want it. I'll make sure to have fun with my loved ones when I choose to take a break, play tennis, which significantly reduces my stress, visit the gym, and other everyday things. I often try to escape from the family business and use the art business —which is a great break for me— I rarely try to escape the art business. I couldn't be happier or more at ease now that I have turned my hobby into a career.

■ Ποια είναι τα σχέδια σου για το μέλλον; Ξεκινάω συνεργασία με δύο μεγάλες γκαλερί στο Λονδίνο για κάποιους από τους καλλιτέχνες που εκπροσωπώ και αυτό είναι πάρα πολύ σημαντικό. Έπεται μια έκθεση στην Tate Britain καθώς και δυο εκθέσεις σε συνεργασία με Sotheby’s and Christie's. Μετά το Μονακό, στις 28 Νοεμβρίου θα γίνει μία μεγάλη έκθεση του Φίλιππου Τσιάραστο Λονδίνο στη Gallery 8 με σημαντικά έργα του και από το παρελθόν. Την επόμενη χρονιά συμμετέχω ως “Varvararozagalleries” στα τρία Αrt fairs, το «Freeze London», το «Art Basel» στην Ελβετία και στο Μαϊάμι.

■ What are your plans?

I am starting a collaboration with two big galleries in London for some of the artists I represent and that is very important. Next, is an exhibition at Tate Britain as well as two exhibitions in collaboration with Sotheby's and Christie's. Following Monaco, on November 28, I am organizing a big retrospective exhibition by Philip Tsiaras at Gallery 8 in London. In the upcoming year, I will participate as "Varvararozagalleries" in the three Art fairs, "Freeze London", "Art Basel" in Switzerland and Miami.

Η Ελισάβετ έσπασε το ρεκόρ του μακροβιότερου μονάρχη, με 70 χρόνια και 214 ημέρες. Κάτι αντίστοιχο είναι σχεδόν αδύνατο, να το δούμε να συμβαίνει στο μέλλον. Η έντονη σε χρώματα, γκαρνταρόμπα της, τα καπέλα της, τα κοσμήματα του στέμματος, συνέθεσαν την προσωπικότητα της και συνέβαλλαν στην συμπλήρωση της εικόνας της. Το ετήσιο μήνυμά της, κάθε Χριστούγεννα, από το ραδιόφωνο και στη συνέχεια από την τηλεόραση, είχε αποδέκτες δισεκατομμύρια κόσμου. Το έργο της μεγάλο, και ανάμεσα σε πολλά το Queens Commonwealth Canopy, για την προστασία των δασών, υπό την προστασία της. 46 από τις 53 χώρες ήδη συμμετέχουν στο πρόγραμμα. Η ίδια εξάλλου είχε φυτέψει πάνω από 1500 δέντρα στις διάφορες επισκέψεις της. Τόνοι μελανιού έχουν χυθεί για την Βασίλισσα και το ίδιο θα συμβεί στο μέλλον, αφού οι ιστορικοί θα καταγράψουν με περισσότερη διαύγεια τα πεπραγμένα της. Σας ευχαριστούμε Μεγαλειότατη.

Having ruled for 70 years and 214 days, Queen Elizabeth broke the record for longest serving monarch. It is almost impossible to witness something similar in the future. Her colorful dresses, her hats and the crown jewels composed her personality and contributed to her image. Billions of people listened to her yearly Christmas message, given over the radiophone, and more recently broadcasted over the television. Her life’s work is immense, one example being the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy, the initiative she used to take the forests under her protection. Forty-six out of fifty-three Commonwealth countries have already announced their participation in the project. The Queen herself had planted over 1500 trees during her visits. Tons of ink have been spilled for the Queen, and the same is going to happen in the future, once historians write down her work in detail. Thank you, your Majesty. Thank you ma’am.

Το 1936, ο Εδουάρδος, μετά τον θάνατο του πατέρα του, Γεωργίου Ε’ γίνεται βασιλιάς αλλά έχοντας επιθυμία να παντρευτεί μία Αμερικανίδα, διπλά διαζευγμένη, την Ουώλλις Σίμπσον, αναγκάζεται μετά από πίεση της μητέρας του, βασίλισσας Μαίρης και του πρωθυπουργού Μπώλντουιν να παραιτηθεί του θρόνου, υπέρ του αδερφού του, Αλβέρτου, που μετονομάζεται πλέον σε Γεώργιο ΣΤ’, ενώ ο ίδιος φεύγει στη Γαλλία ως Δούκας του Ουίνδσορ. Η ζωή της Ελισάβετ αλλάζει αμέσως. Σε ηλικία 10 ετών είναι πλέον η διάδοχος. Έλαβε μαθήματα στη γλώσσα, στη λογοτεχνία, στη μουσική και στην ιστορία, διδάχτηκε γαλλικά ενώ αργότερα έλαβε μαθήματα στη συνταγματική ιστορία. Το 1939 ξεσπά ο πόλεμος. Η βασιλική οικογένεια αρνείται τις συστάσεις να φύγουν τα μικρότερα μέλη, με την βασίλισσα, εκτός Αγγλίας. Στην αρχή πηγαίνουν για λίγο στο κάστρο του Μπαλμόραλ, στη συνέχεια στο Σάντριγχαμ, ενώ καταλήγουν στο κάστρο του Ουίνδσορ, όπου περνούν το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του πολέμου. Η Ελισάβετ εμψυχώνει τα υπόλοιπα παιδιά με μία ραδιοφωνική εκπομπή στο BBC το 1940. Ο πόλεμος τελειώνει και η Μ. Βρετανία είναι στις νικήτριες δυνάμεις.

the first-born daughter of the Duke of York, Albert, and Scottish aristocrat Elisabeth Bowes-Lyon, Elizabeth was born in Mayfair, London, on April 21, 1926. There was no way to foretell what her future held. She was third in the line of succession; however, her uncle Edward, the most promising heir to the throne, remained unmarried. She spent her childhood years playing carefree with her sister Margaret, who was 4 years younger. Edward was crowned king after his father’s, the King George E, death, in 1936. He wished, however, to marry Wallis Simpson, a twice-divorced American woman, which led his mother, Queen Mary, and Prime Minister Baldwin, to force him to concede the throne to his brother Albert, who was consequently named George VI, while he fled to France as the Duke of Windsor. Elizabeth’s life changed promptly, as she became heir to the throne at the age of 10. She was tutored in English, literature, music, and history, she learned how to speak French, and later took lessons in constitutional history. The year 1939 marked the beginning of the war. The Royal Family refused to let younger members, the queen among them, flee England. First, they spent some time in Balmoral castle, and then they went to Sandringham, to end up in Windsor castle, where they spent the biggest part of the war. In 1940, Elisabeth started a radio show to inspire courage in other children. The end of the war saw Great Britain among the winning countries.

9Ιουλίου του 1947, το παλάτι ανακοινώνει τον αρραβώνα της Ελισάβετ, με τον νεαρό Φίλιππο Μαουντμπάτεν, τον δικό μας Έλληνα πρίγκηπα. Πέρα από την πριγκιπική καταγωγή, τα εμπόδια της οικογενειακής κατάστασης αλλά και των οικονομικών του Φιλίππου ξεπεράστηκαν λόγω του έρωτα που έτρεφε η Ελισάβετ, από 13 χρονών, γι’ αυτόν, όπως είχε δηλώσει. Η μεταξύ τους αλληλογραφία ήταν που διατήρησε άσβεστο, το πάθος ανάμεσα τους. Παντρεύονται στο Αββαείο του Ουέστμινστερ, στις 20 Νοεμβρίου του 1947. Πέντε χρόνια μετά, κατά την διάρκεια του ταξιδιού τους στην Κένυα, φτάνουν τα νέα, ότι ο πατέρας της πέθανε. Η Ελισάβετ αναγορεύεται Βασίλισσα, επιστρέφει στο Λονδίνο για την κηδεία, ενώ ένα χρόνο μετά, στις 2 Ιουνίου 1953 πραγματοποιείται η στέψη της, στο Ουέστμινστερ. Η Ελισάβετ βιώνει τόσο εξωτερικές κρίσεις, όπως η Κρίση του Σουέζ, ο ψυχρός πόλεμος μεταξύ Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών και Σοβιετικής Ένωσης, όσο και εσωτερικές, όπως η κρίση στο συντηρητικό κόμμα, το 1957. Η αλήθεια είναι ότι στα πρώτα χρόνια της βασιλείας της, έδωσε περισσότερη βαρύτητα στο στέμμα παρά στον πρωτότοκο Κάρολο, γεννημένο το 1948 και την Άννα γεννημένη το 1950. Τα δύο μικρότερα παιδιά ο Ανδρέας (γ.1960) και ο Εδουάρδος (γ.1964), ίσως να είχαν περισσότερα χάδια. Το σίγουρο είναι ότι η Ελισάβετ ευτύχησε να φτάσει στα 96 χρόνια, οπότε η σχέση με τα παιδιά της δυνάμωσε χρόνο με το χρόνο και το κάθε ένα, είχε ιδιαίτερη σχέση μαζί της. Το 2002, στις 9 Φεβρουαρίου πεθαίνει η αδερφή της Μαργαρίτα, ενώ η μητέρα της πεθαίνει, ένα μήνα αργότερα σε ηλικία 101 χρονών. Το 2021 πεθαίνει ο σύζυγος της Φίλιππος, ο βράχος, το στήριγμα της, όπως είχε πει, δύο μήνες πριν προλάβει να συμπληρώσει τα 100 χρόνια ζωής. Στο Μπαλμόραλ δέχτηκε τον Μπόρις Τζόνσον, όπου παραιτήθηκε αλλά και την Λίζ Τρας που της ανέθεσε την πρωθυπουργία. Σύμφωνα με πηγές από το παλάτι, η Ελισάβετ είχε πολλές τηλεδιασκέψεις, όλη αυτή την περίοδο. Δύο μέρες αργότερα δυστυχώς, ήρθε η ανακοίνωση των γιατρών της. «Η Λίλιμπετ, - το χαϊδευτικό της, όπως υπέγραφε στους οικείους της- η Βασίλισσα, δεν είναι πια μαζί μας». «Η Βασίλ ισσα πέ θανε, ζήτω ο Βασιλιάς Κάρολο ς III».

on July 9, 1947, the palace announced Elizabeth’s engagement to young Filip Mountbatten, the former Greek prince. Many obstacles, such as his title as a prince and his marital and financial status, where overcome, as Elizabeth announced she had been in love with him since she was 13 years old. Their passion was kept alive through the letters they wrote each other. The couple got married in Westminster Abbey on November 20, 1947. Five years later, during a trip to Kenya, they received the news that her father had died. Elizabeth was named Queen and returned to London for the funeral. One year later, on June 2, 1953, she was crowned in Westminster.

During her reign, Herself, as well as the rest of the people, lived through, and were part of, experienced great changes and momentous events.

The British Empire would go on to become the British Commonwealth, and then the Commonwealth of Nations. Elizabeth became Head of the Commonwealth on her accession in 1952. She witnessed world crises, such as the Suez crisis, the cold war between the USA and USSR, and crises at home, such as the crisis of the Preservative Party in 1957. During the first years of her reign, Elizabeth paid more attention to the crown, than she did to her first-born son Charles, who came into the world in 1948, and Anna, born in 1950. Her two younger children Andrew (1960) and Edward (1964) may have received more affection. The only thing certain, is that Elizabeth lived to be 96 years old, so her relationship with her children rather strengthened over the passage of time, and each of them had a special relationship with their mother.

Her sister, Margarita, died on February 9, 2002, one month earlier than their mother, who passed away at the age of 101. Her husband Phillip, the man she considered her support, her “rock”, died in 2021, just shy of 100 years old. She accepted Boris Johnson’s resignation in Balmoral, and she appointed Liz Truss the new Prime Minister. Palace sources have mentioned that this whole time, Elizabeth had several teleconferences that were not announced. Unfortunately, two days later, her doctors announced that “Lilibet – the nickname she used when writing to her family – the Queen, is no longer with us”.

Ως παιδί δύο κόσμων, ο Ελληνο-Αμερικάνος Τσιάρας ενώνει τον παλιό κόσμο με τον νέο, με τη δημιουργία ενός προσωπικού σύμπαντος στο οποίο εκθέτει τις λαμπρές, σπάνιες δημιουργίες του ως ζωγράφος, γλύπτης, φωτογράφος και ποιητής. Γιος Ελλήνων μεταναστών από την Βόρεια Ελλάδα, γεννήθηκε στις ΗΠΑ και έλαβε προνομιούχα εκπαίδευση στο Κολλέγιο Άμχερστ, όπου σπούδασε μουσική και συγκριτική λογοτεχνία. Έχοντας εκπαιδευτεί στην κλασική μουσική, κέρδισε υποτροφία στην ποίηση, τόσο για τα δικά του ποιήματα, όσο και για μεταφράσεις κειμένων σύγχρονων Ελλήνων ποιητών, κυρίως του Ρίτσου, του Καβάφη και του Καρυωτάκη. Μελέτησε μαζί με τον διάσημο καλλιτέχνη Λουκά Σαμαρά, από τον οποίο επηρεάστηκε βαθιά και τον οποίο θεωρεί μέντορα. Η αστείρευτη δημιουργικότητα, η νεανική ενέργεια, και η δυνατή δημιουργική γλώσσα, συγχωνεύονται στα έργα του με αυθεντικότητα και άνεση. Ο Νεωτερισμός και η Pop Art από τη φύση τους συνδυάζονται με ποιητικές και ιστορικές αναφορές της κλασικής ιστορίας. Ο Τσιάρας είναι ένας Υπερ-νεωτεριστής με παλιά ψυχή. In a mosaic of millions of dots, international pop artist presents modern paintings of celebrities that he calls “Divas, Personas, Monsters and Friends”. A child of o worlds, Greek-American Tsiaras fuses the old world with the new while creating a personal universe that exhibits a brilliance of rare creations as a painter, sculptor, photographer, and poet. Born in the United States, the son of Greek immigrants who le worn torn Northern Greece, he received a privileged education at Amherst College where he studied music and comparative literature. A trained classical musician, he received a fellowship for his own poetry as well his and translations of contemporary Greek poets, primarily Ritsos, Cava and Kariotakis. He studied alongside the famous artist Lucas Samaras, who deeply influenced him and whom he considers a great mentor. Boundless creativi, youthful energy, and strong creative language, merge in his work with unpretentious ease. Modernism and Pop Art combine naturally with poetic and historical references from classical history. Tsiaras is a Super-modernist in an old soul.

From his Manhattan studio, his paintings travel to private collectors all over the world. He has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Thomas Watson Fellowship, 2 National Endowment Grants, Lifetime Achievement Award from the Alexandrion Foundation, NYC, Excellence in the Arts, Greek Ministry of the Exterior, and Generali’s Gold Metal Award for “Civilita Venezia”. We recently met to discuss his new solo exhibitions at The Blender Gallery in Athens and at Gallery Eight in Mayfair, London, in collaboration with Varvara Roza Galleries. In November he will exhibit his art in Monaco under the patronage of Prince Albert, in a multitude of creative dots that will combine to create the portrait of Princess Grace Kelly’s beautiful face.

Philip, being as an internationally recognized as you are, do you ever feel hesitant to take risks with your work?

Risks are exciting, if you don’t take them, you never discover anything at all. Calculated risks are important too, because they help you make “mistakes”, smart mistakes which help you evolve and confront the demon of all demons-repetition —the anathema of the artist. When I went to make glass in Murano, Venice, I knew nothing about making glass, at all. So, it was a big risk, obviously because it was totally unknown to me, expensive, and required the help of others. I jumped into glass making-it was luxurious punishment, “furnacefear”, as the poet Philip Larkin says. I ‘ve also designed sets and costumes for a modern dance, and branded an entire Vineyard in Virginia. Who knew that fear can be your friend!

■ How do you like working In the Greek Artworld?

I started very young working as an artist in Greece. I began with the Bernie Gallery in the late 70’s with the help of Alexandros Iolas. I’ve made museum exhibitions in Greece as well, the Pinakotects of Siros, Ithaca, and Corfu, Museums of Larisa and Thessaloniki.

About 8 years ago I joined the Blender Gallery. To some degree I helped put gallerist Varvara Roza of London together with Iason Theophanides of The Blender Gallery, and it has proven to be an excellent combination.

■ Volta is featuring Roza in this Fall issue. What do you think of her? I think Varvara Roza will be one of the most talked about art dealers of the next decade.

■ Your new work, contains millions of dots like a mosaic. How did you come up with this idea and how is it perceived?

Dots are another way of touching the subject, of getting close on a micro level. The history of painting has many artists using the dot, notably Impressionist painters like Seurat and Signac to mention a few. But for me the most vital use of the Dot, (the collection of small pieces of glass, tile or paint), is in the mosaics of Greek, Roman and Byzantine art. I use, what I consider a loving dot, as a way of recreating iconic personas, a little like Warhol but with far more detail.

■ Yes, a London Critic referred to you as the Greek Warhol, did you like that?

I thought it humorous, I don’t particularly like to be branded by anyone, but if it has to be someone, I guess Warhol is OK.

■ How do you relate personally to these portraits? Interesting that you ask that. At the same time, when I was doing these

dot paintings, I realized that I was getting very involved with the subject, almost too involved. You’re looking in the eyes of somebody whose face you are sculpting with points, evolving a persona for countless hours in meticulous detail, augmenting, reconstructing-a face, a bit like a psycho-plastic surgeon. But there is also the Consciousness that you cannot escape, theirs and yours, It’s a weird connectivity. I am like a vampire trying to make others immortal through the kiss of the Dot.!

■ Out of all these portraits, who are those that you admire? I admire Elon Musk. He has personality issues that make him less lovable, but he an amazing genius of our time. In the world of technology, I believe that Steve Jobs and Elon Musk are the two greatest. In the world of art, Picasso, Dali, Frida Kahlo and Samaras are some of my heroes. In music, Hendrix, Bowie and Freddie Mercury.

There are times in these portraits that I combine individuals into one body. Like a snake with 2 heads. I did Donald Trump and Putin as a geopolitical statement, two monsters trapped in one body forever. I also joined Maria Callas and Jackie-O into one Siamese body as though they would fight over Onassis into perpetuity!

I’d like to do Zelensky because he is perhaps the most heroic leader of our time. I have toyed with the idea of doing the portrait of Antetok-

■ Are there really new trends in art or are things we see derived from the classics?

The only thing that can be considered “new” is something that uses technology, either digital or maybe even the metaverse. However, much of this technologically driven art, although it has many bells and whistles, is ultimately cold and uninteresting.

Everything in realty is built on the past, but with fresh and imaginative and even extreme variations. Looking back at history intelligently is the way to look forward. What’s the future without history? Can we forget our loved ones, our family, our history and deny our origins, our culture. There is no real present without the past.

If you read Sophocles, he talks about the weight of an oxen’s foot on your tongue. That is as surrealistic as any modern surrealist artist would ever get. The ancient Greeks touched on everything, including surrealism, or the idea of a computing machine. Take Lysistrata, what is more politically advanced then a society of women cutting off sex to end a

War. It is genius. So, nothing is completely original which makes doing something “new” even more difficult.

■ Are you doing something in Greece now?

I'm preparing for an exhibition in Venice and London at the moment but in Athens I am reinstating a sculpture the I made for the Venice Biennale that was on Grand Canal. It will be placed in the centre of the new Astir Marina which is opening in the next few months.

It is a 3-meter, golden bronze sculpture entitled Social Climber. Something that nobody thinks they are!

■ Finally, where does all this inspiration come from?

The mythological or Hollywood idea of the artist is incorrect. No funky muse comes down to inspire you, unless you have extremely good dreams or drugs.

Creativity comes from work, dedicated daily work. It does not come from working once a week on Sundays, nor does it come from some intermittent Muse. As boring as it may sound, it is the God of chronic work that inspires.

On September 13th, the international humanitarian organization Lifeline Hellas, in collaboration with IMG Artists and visionary culture, organized a unique charity concert entitled "Songs we Love," inviting to Athens, one of the most famous JAZZ orchestras in the world, "JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (JALC) in New York, with six of its all-star musicians and three great ladies of Jazz - led by the great performer Catherine Russel.

The event's goal was to provide incubators at the "Attikon" University General Hospital.

■ When describing the commercial and economic potential between the two countries, quite often you use the terms «Greek experience» and «Israeli experience». Why?

The Greek experience, as I refer to it, is more than just getting to know the people, the food, the music, and the environment. It is understanding the complexities. It is to grope, touch, feel, know your place, where you are, and with whom you are, and understand your position before you start doing business. The Israeli experience is the same thing in reverse. We observe that there are many similarities, however, there is a deeper difference that must be recognized.

■ «Ισραήλ - Ελλάδα. Σε γαλανόλευκο».Έχω παρατηρήσει ότι πάντα τελειώνετε τις συνεντεύξεις σε άρθρα και ομιλίες με αυτή τη δήλωση. Τι σημαίνει αυτό? Το γαλάζιο και το λευκό είναι πολύ περισσότερα από δύο χρώματα για μένα. Το γαλάζιο και το λευκό αντιπροσωπεύουν ένα ευρύ φάσμα αισιοδοξίας. Οι σημαίες μας είναι γαλανόλευκες, η θάλασσα που μας χωρίζει είναι γαλανόλευκη, οι δύο λαοί έχουν πλούσια ιστορία, πλούσιο πολιτισμό που έφερε στον κόσμο σε σημαντικές αξίες, οι δύο λαοί γνώρισαν και έζησαν αγώνες, αλλά και αφύπνιση , υπερηφάνεια, αδελφοσύνη, και αμοιβαία εγγύηση. ■ "Israel - Greece. In blue and white." I've noticed that you always end interviews in news articles and speeches with this statement. What does this mean?

Blue and white are much more than two colors for me. Blue and white represent a broad spectrum of optimism. Our flags are blue and white, the sea that separates us is blue and white, the two people have a rich history, a rich culture that brought to the wide world great values, the two people have known and experienced struggles, but also awakening, pride, brotherhood, and mutual guarantee. All of this is what blue and white mean to me.

■ Ξεκινήσατε πρόσφατα μια νέα πρωτοβουλία, μία από τις πολλές σε μπλε και λευκό, για την δημιουργία μιας διμερούς γυναικείας επιχειρηματικής και ηγετικής οργάνωσης. Γιατί; Αναζητώ ισορροπία όπου κι αν πάω. Για μένα οι γυναίκες είναι ένας παράγοντας που δημιουργεί ισορροπία. Η γυναικεία ηγεσία σε ανώτερες θέσεις βρίσκεται σε άνοδο τα τελευταία χρόνια. Αυτό είναι εμφανές στο Ισραήλ εδώ και πολλά χρόνια και παρακολουθώ στενά τις αλλαγές στην Ελλάδα. Πριν από πέντε χρόνια, όταν ανέλαβα την ηγεσία του Εμπορικού Επιμελητηρίου Ισραήλ-Ελλάδας στη νέα του μορφή, το όραμά μου περιελάμβανε την ενδυνάμωση της γυναικείας παρουσίας, την επιχειρηματικότητα και την ηγεσία. Why? I seek balance wherever I go. For me, women are a factor that creates balance. Female leadership in senior positions has been on the rise in recent years. This has been evident in Israel for many years, and I am closely monitoring the changes in Greece. Five years ago, when I stepped in to lead the Israel-Greece Chamber of Commerce in its new form, my vision included empowering female presence, entrepreneurship, and leadership. It still does. This initiative of a bilateral organization to empower women will happen with support from both sides. Today it is led by Keren Hod, the founder of «WE – Women Entrepreneurship» in Israel. ■ At the recent Israel-Greece conference in Athens, you urged for the establishment of a joint Israeli-Greek investment fund that invests in initiatives to protect the interests of the two countries in the areas of energy, the environment, sustainability, food security, and future generation. How applicable, is it?

The notion of forming a bilateral investment body is not new. My goal is to create a movement that will bring together Israeli and Greek business communities, so each side can add its unique value. This will spark new initiatives and introduce lines of communication to both people and the region, and solve problems that threaten us in the areas of energy, climate change, food security, personal security, and a better society. It will improve resource usage and provide a bright future for the younger generation. This is only possible if there is an understanding, and shared interests between the commercial, academic, and political worlds. As crazy as it may sound, such an investment fund may be created and executed with the goodwill and harnessing of influencers.

■ Στο ίδιο συνέδριο, καλέσατε τους υπευθύνους λήψης αποφάσεων από την Ελληνική πολιτεία να ενθαρρύνουν τους επενδυτές να συμμετάσχουν σε ένα roadshow στο Ισραήλ με στόχο να εξοικειωθεί καλύτερα η ισραηλινή επιχειρηματική κοινότητα με την ελληνική, και να καταρριφθεί η αντίληψη ότι ο ελληνικός επιχειρηματικός κόσμος στερείται πρωτοβουλίας και γενναιότητας. Το πιστεύεις ειλικρινά; Με ρωτούν συχνά γιατί δεν υπάρχει μεγαλύτερο ενδιαφέρον για επενδύσεις στο Ισραήλ από ελληνικές επιχειρήσεις, χρηματοπιστωτικά ιδρύματα, ιδιωτικά επενδυτικά κεφάλαια και ανεξάρτητους επιχειρηματίες. Υπάρχουν διάφοροι λόγοι, στους οποίους δεν θα αναφερθώ τώρα, αλλά δεν υπάρχει αμφιβολία ότι υπάρχει δυνατότητα. Δεν είναι μυστικό ότι το Ισραήλ είναι ένας δημοφιλής προορισμός για επενδυτές σε όλο τον κόσμο, είτε πρόκειται για δημόσια επενδυτικά ταμεία είτε για μεγάλες διεθνείς εμπορικές τράπεζες, για να επενδύσουν σε ιδιωτικές ισραηλινές εταιρείες και κυβερνητικές οντότητες. ■ At that conference, you called on Greek decision-makers to encourage investors to participate in a roadshow in Israel to better familiarize the Israeli business community with the Greek side and dispel the perception that the Greek business world lacks initiative and bravery. Do you sincerely think it?

I'm frequently asked why there isn't more interest to invest in Israel from Greek businesses, financial institutions, private investment funds, and independent entrepreneurs. There are various reasons, which I will not go into here, but there is no doubt that the potential exists. It is no secret that Israel is a popular destination for investors worldwide, whether it is public wealth funds or major international commercial banks, to invest in private Israeli firms and government entities. Whether it is a wellknown technological concern or a multinational company in the food and agriculture industries, Greek entrepreneurs and investors have a place here. Israel represents a location that is dynamic, geographically close, and promising, yet complex and challenging, which requires a level of courage and audacity. I see this as a mission to bring together different business groups, executives at financial entities and family offices, and philanthropic organizations to explore and learn from the Israeli experience –to feel the pulse of the Israeli entrepreneur and develop a new investment channel with more game changers.

To begin with, our basic principle is that we as Jewish people and as an Israeli nation are peace-seekers who want to live in security. While we’ve been oppressed and in constant conflict over land and religion for over 5,000 years, we firmly believe that open dialogue and doing good can only bring positive change.

For years now we have been harnessing our talents to develop more innovation for the benefit of all humanity.

If you have placed yourself in the position of the employer or the manager that has a hard time setting boundaries, because you do not wish to be considered “bad-guys” and, as a result, have been suffering the consequences for years, then it is high time you threw away this misguided belief. Είναι εκείνοι οι εργαζόμενοι και τα μέλη της ομάδας που κάνουν την ζωή των εργοδοτών και των managers τους εύκολη. Αυτοί, με τους οποίους δεν ένιωσαν ποτέ μία εσωτερική δυσαρέσκεια για την συμπεριφορά τους και δεν χρειάστηκε να νιώσουν ποτέ την ανάγκη να κάνουν την «δύσκολη» συζήτηση μαζί τους περί ορίων και σεβασμού ή δεν ευχήθηκαν ποτέ να είχαν το θάρρος να κάνουν μία τέτοια συζήτηση. Relationships in the workplace are human relationships. A workplace may be set in a different frame, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is a place where everything is a result of human action or interaction, where people simply assume their business identity and role.

Therefore, things that give us a hard time in everyday life, such as setting boundaries, being assertive, maintaining standards we think are important, continue to trouble us within the workplace, as we coexist and collaborate with other people. The reason for this, is because even as we assume our role as professionals, we cannot be cut off from our human nature, our emotions, the insecurities and fears that may be formed internally. These are all behaviors we should be exhibiting and actions we should be taking in order to be satisfied by our collaborations and the emerging outcomes. However, there is an internal battle, where this process clashes with the belief that the person who sets their boundaries,

who clearly defines their expectations and their desires, who negotiates and asserts, is egocentric, cruel, or a plain bad person.

Many high-ranking executives, and many entrepreneurs, carry these kinds of beliefs regarding the definition of what a “good person” is, and make the erroneous assumption that a good person does not express their desires (or if they do, they do it quietly), they do not inform other people what parts of their collaboration or work they are not satisfied with, they do not set boundaries, and they do not set rules outlining the obligations and rights of both people.

As a result, managers or business owners, usually hide behind hopes and utopian expectations, that the members of their team, or their employees in general, will automatically respect all of the above, assuming that what is ethical and what is right is self-explanatory. Of course, there is always the best-case scenario, where people are fully aware that freedom should be utilized and not be taken advantage of, and prove by exhibiting self-demarcated and correct behavior. These employees and team members, make their employers’ and managers’ life easy. Employers or managers never feel the need to have any “difficult” conversation with these people about boundaries and respect, and they will never even have to wish they had the courage to have that kind of conversation.

But there’s another type of people, who believe they do not have to take into consideration anything that has not been expressly mentioned. They focus, therefore, in their own rights, which they fervently preserve, but they are very flexible regarding their obligations and respecting other people’s boundaries (their managers’, or in this case, their employers’), which they encroach on, often bringing them in a difficult position. When that is the case, the employer’s or manager’s negative emotions accumulate over time, until they reach breaking point. When boundaries have been stepped on too much, a necessary, explosive conflict occurs, that most often happens in a clumsy and unprofessional way.

If, by reading the above, you have placed yourself in the position of the employer or the manager that has a hard time setting boundaries, because you do not wish to be considered “bad-guys” and, as a result, have been suffering the consequences for years, then it is high time you threw away this misguided belief. Speak up! Set your limits! It will benefit the members of your team, the outcomes of your employees’ work, your relationships, as well as your own self, as a good leader is a person who can place boundaries, and not a people pleaser!

One of th e biggest misconceptions is that Maria Callas (19231977) died of a broken hear t after two great losses: the death of Aristotle Onassis and her vocal decline. Not only is it a lie but a disservice to her legacy and to women ever ywhere. The truth was far more devastating: she was a very ill woman and, for decades, h ad been neglected by medical professio nals.

It's important to remember Maria Callas was a human, who was equally let down by her fellow humans. People were, and are, happy to profit from Callas but who was there to protect her?

Έχοντας υποστεί ταπείνωση για το σώμα της στην παιδική της ηλικία, είχε ανασφάλεια σχετικά με το βάρος της. MMy research into her cultural identity and the social practices of Greece and Italy reinforced how incredible she was. As a female, she had few rights and was first her father's property and then her husband's. Under Italian law—she lived in Italy from 1947-62—she could not divorce her husband, Battista Meneghini, and risked being imprisoned for committing adultery with Aristotle Onassis. Women have come a long way in terms of their rights; however, from a medical perspective, women's health remains in the dark ages.

Despite being the most famous opera singer in the world and earning millions in ticket sales and royalties, Callas was bound to patriarchal laws. Even Onassis adhered to the customs of Ancient Greece, namely the Solonian Constitution, whereby any woman who offered pre-marital sex placed herself outside of the Oikos (the family, the family’s property, and the family home). He said that was why he could not marry her if she were free of Meneghini. Her entire life was a paradox.

Undoubtedly, this caused mental anguish but what of her physical ailments?

They began in the late 1940s before Callas turned thirty. She complained of rashes, low blood pressure, metabolism issues, vision loss, vertigo, and flu-like symptoms.

Letters, written to Meneghini, from 1947 onwards plead for sympathy but he offered her none.

Nor did her doctors find the cause behind her mystery ailments and dismissed her as a hypochondriac. 'You singers are crazy,' her doctor said.

Many believe Callas's weight loss in 1953 contributed to her vocal, and physical, decline. Research has shown she undertook dangerous and experimental iodine treatments by a pioneering doctor in Switzerland, which had grave consequences on her health.

By the mid-1950s, she was burnt out and visited Doctor Feelgood (the German quack Dr Max Jacobson) who gave her

'liquid vitamins'. These turned out to be vitamin B, amphetamine and methamphetamine – the powerful stimulants speed and meth. In Callas's defence, she believed these were indeed vitamins.

Meneghini, who was also her manager, turned a blind eye; he was pushing her too hard and cared only about money. To a friend, she wrote, 'I never was a strong horse. I'm a racehorse, rather delicate and sensitive. Damn it!'

Health reports, to which I was given access, revealed she had a nervous breakdown in early 1958 and risked being hospitalised, not only for her mental health but an eating disorder –in those days, both were misunderstood.

It's no secret that Callas wanted to have children, yet Meneghini refused to father a child. In a letter to her American lawyer, written in 1959, she confessed they had lived platonically since 1951.

To protect his pride and serve his ego, Meneghini started a rumour that Callas entered menopause before the age of thirty. A lie, as her personal papers can attest.

In her letters to trusted friends, the symptoms she described would point to endometriosis – a condition still misunderstood and difficult to diagnose today.

Her doctor did investigative surgery and inserted polypropylene mesh into her pelvis.

The practise is controversial and many women are now suing their health practitioners, as the mesh has affected their quality of life. As Callas's letters prove, she had chronic pain and her own quality of life was greatly compromised.

There were also neurological issues: the reason for many cancelled performances and the unpredictable nature of her voice.

With an understanding doctor and medication, she could have been spared public ridicule and the private fear that she was losing her mind.

This was proven in letters from 1974-76, in which she detailed her latest symptoms: internal bleeding, labyrinth vertigo, temporary blindness, low blood pressure, lack of reflexes, numbness, and dexterity issues.

She named the neurologist who treated her, Prof. Mario Giacovazzo, and I managed to track him down in Rome before his death.

Prof. Giacovazzo diagnosed her with dermatomyositis, a disease that causes muscle weakness, and to an extent, affects the central nervous system. It would have been responsible for the ailments – autoimmune disorders – that had bothered her since the 1950s, and for which she was accused of being a hypochondriac. There was, and is, no cure but she was prescribed prednisone (steroids) to alieve her symptoms. 'Now with his cure, I am much calmer,' she wrote to her godfather. 'Pills, of course, but good ones not heavy drugs.' However, she stopped taking prednisone, as she gained weight – a common side effect. 'I am angry because it takes a severe diet and still I have not seen one kilo lost.' She stopped the treatment and her symptoms returned, causing her to suffer throughout the day and difficulty sleeping at night.

In her last days, she self-medicated with Mandrax, a dangerous drug known to sedate the nervous system. She did this to ease her pain and make life bearable. Unfortunately, it also became an addiction. On 16 September 1977, she died suddenly.

Today, she is a myth and the truth about her life makes people uncomfortable.

Perhaps they cannot fathom how she suffered. It's important to remember Maria Callas was a human, who was equally let down by her fellow humans.

Όσο περνούσε ο καιρός, έβλεπα πως το πρόβλημα ήταν μεγάλο, πολύ μεγαλύτερο από όσο μπορούσα τότε να φανταστώ. Ακόμα και

Γραμμή SOS -15900 για γυναίκες θύματα βίας. Το 80% των καταγγελιών που έγιναν από τα ίδια τα θύματα αφορούσαν σε περιστατικά ενδοοικογενειακής βίας. Τα στοιχεία δυστυχώς έχουν αλλάξει, καθώς η ενδοοικογενειακή βία εκτοξεύθηκε στην περίοδο της καραντίνας σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο.

Το 2021, περισσότερες από 570 γυναίκες έπεσαν θύματα ενδοοικογενειακής βίας στην Ελλάδα, σύμφωνα με τα επίσημα στοιχεία της ΕΛ.ΑΣ. Εκείνη την χρονιά, είχαμε 17 γυναικοκτονίες. Και πριν τελειώσει το 2022, μετράμε ήδη αρκετές, με 3 από αυτές να συμβαίνουν με διαφορά ελάχιστων ωρών. Συχνά θεωρούμε ως βία την σωματική κακομεταχείριση αλλά η βία έχει πολλές μορφές. Είναι λεκτική, συναισθηματική, οικονομική, σεξουαλική. Το μόνο εύκολο είναι να ξεστομίσεις την ατάκα «ας πάνε να πούνε αυτό που τους συμβαίνει, γιατί δεν πάνε;» Γιατί δεν είναι εύκολο. Δεν είναι. Η κακοποίηση κρύβεται καλά κάτω από τίτλους σπουδών, καριέρες, ωραία ρούχα και άνετο cool-στυλ. Δεν είναι χαρακτηριστικό των γυναικών που «δεν έχουν στον ήλιο μοίρα». Δεν αφορά τους οξύθυμους άνδρες που χρησιμοποιούν δικαιολογίες όπως η οικονομική ανασφάλεια, ή η κούραση. Είναι αρκετά πιο περίπλοκο, αλλά συμβαίνει δίπλα μας.

Οι χειριστικές σχέσεις είναι δυσβάσταχτες γιατί έχουν να κάνουν με τον «έλεγχο». Πολλές φορές κρύβονται κάτω από μια λαμπερή εικόνα, κάτω από τίτλους σπουδών, πτυχία, κοινωνική καταξίωση. Το μόνο σίγουρο είναι πως δεν υπάρχει αγάπη πίσω από την κάθε πράξη βίας. Δεν υπάρχει έρωτας. Ο έρωτας, σου δίνει φτερά να πετάξεις, δεν σου δένει με αλυσίδες τα πόδια. Τι πρέπει να κάνουμε ως κοινωνία λοιπόν; Να εκπαιδεύσουμε τα παιδιά μας. Αγόρια και κορίτσια. Κορίτσια και αγόρια. Να μην ντρεπόμαστε να τους μιλάμε, και να τους δίνουμε το έναυσμα να μας μιλούν και εκείνα ανοιχτά για ότι τους συμβαίνει. Να γίνουν περισσότερες οι εκδηλώσεις ενημέρωσης πάνω στο φαινόμενο. Να ενώσουν τις δυνάμεις τους όλοι οι οργανισμοί και να παλέψουν μαζί για την αντιμετώπιση του.

Πολλοί αναρωτιούνται γιατί να χρησιμοποιούμε τον όρο «γυναικοκτονία» και όχι απλώς «ανθρωποκτονία». Γιατί σύμφωνα με το Ευρωπαϊκό Ινστιτούτο για την Ισότητα των Φύλων (EIGE), ως «γυναικοκτονία» ορίζεται η δολοφονία γυναικών και κοριτσιών εξαιτίας του φύλου τους. Ο όρος, προέρχεται από την αγγλική λέξη “femicide” (γυναικοκτονία) και χρησιμοποιείται εκτενώς στη Λατινική Αμερική ως εργαλείο για την αντιμετώπιση της έντονης κλιμάκωσης των πολύ βίαιων δολοφονιών γυναικών και κοριτσιών. Η θεία μου πήρε μια απόφαση που της έσωσε προφανώς την ζωή, και την οδήγησε στο να συναντήσει έναν καλό άντρα με τον οποίο έκανε μια υπέροχη οικογένεια. Και μια ευχή: να

was clearly seen, but not as we knew it. It was battered and dark. The aunt had left secretly, in the night, to escape her then-husband. We kept her at our house until she could feel safe and settle all her pending issues.

It took many years for me to understand that what had happened then was something that happened in many homes, only that not all women had the courage and strength to leave. In 2018, a random post on my personal social networks about incidents of violence against women had an impact of 10,400 shares, and hundreds of private messages for “help” and became the reason for the creation of an international campaign called #dontacceptit.

As time passed, I saw that the problem was big, much bigger than I could imagine at the time. Even before the campaign began, the evidence that had then come to light was more than terrifying. 80% of the cases pointed to the husband as the perpetrator. 5,041 calls and 113 e-mails in one year to the SOS-15900 Hotline for women victims of violence. 80% of the complaints made by the victims themselves related to incidents of domestic violence.

In 2021, more than 570 women were victims of domestic violence in Greece, according to the official data of EL.AS.

That year, we had 17 femicides. And before 2022 ends, we’re already counting quite a few, with 3 of them happening within hours of each other. We often think of physical abuse as violence, but violence comes in many forms. It is verbal, emotional, financial, and sexual. The only easy thing is to say “why don’t they go?” Because it’s not easy. It is not. Abuse is well hidden under degrees, careers, nice clothes, and comfortable-cool-style. It is not characteristic of women who “have no fate in the sun”. It is not about irritable men who use excuses like financial insecurity, or fatigue.

It’s quite a bit more complicated, but it’s happening right next to us. Manipulative relationships are difficult because they are about “control”. Many times they hide under a shiny image, under degrees, diplomas, or social acclaim. The only thing that is certain is that there is no love behind every act of violence. There is no love, Love gives you wings to fly, it doesn’t chain your feet. So what should we do as a society? To educate our children. Boys and girls. Girls and boys.

Let’s not be ashamed to talk to them, and give them the trigger to talk to us openly about what is happening to them. There should be more information on the phenomenon. All organizations should join forces and fight together to deal with it. Many people wonder why we use the term “femicide” and not just “homicide”. According to the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE), “femicide” is defined as the killing of women and girls because of their gender. The term comes from the English word “femicide” and is used extensively in Latin America as a tool to address the alarming escalation of very violent killings of women and girls. Πάνω στα νύχια, στο δέρμα γύρω τους, αλλά και στον ιστό που βρίσκεται κάτω από αυτά είναι δυνατό να παρουσιαστούν αρκετές παθ ήσεις, όπως και προει δοποιητικά σημάδια άλλων προβλημάτων υγείας. Όσο πιο νωρίς γίνει η διάγνωση κι όσο πιο αποτελεσματική είναι η αντιμετώπισή τους, τόσο λιγότερες οι επιπλοκές τους και καλύτερο το αποτέλεσμα. Ορισμένες από αυτές τις παθήσεις αποτελούν οι μυρμηκιές, η είσφρυση όνυχος, η μόλυνση από διάφορους μικροοργανισμούς (μύκητες και βακτήρια), η ψωρίαση, αλλά και το μελάνωμα.

Αυτά ευθύνονται και για τη μυκητίαση των μεσοδακτύλιων πτυχών (το δέρμα δηλαδή ανάμεσα στα δάκτυλα), η οποία συχνά συνυπάρχει με τη δερματοφυτία των ονύχων. Αυτή η πάθηση μεταδίδεται εύκολα σε μέρη με πολλή υγρασία, κάτι που οι μύκητες αγαπούν. Τέτοια μέρη μπορεί να είναι πισίνες, ντουζ, αλλά και καταστήματα περιποίησης νυχιών, όταν τα εργαλεία που χρησιμοποιούνται δεν είναι αποστειρωμένα. • Η ε ίσ φρυ ση όνυ χος παρατηρείται όταν το νύχι εισέρχεται στο δέρμα. Αν το νύχι παρουσιάζει σκούρα ράβδωση ή σκούρο σημάδι, χωρίς υποψία τραυματισμού, θα πρέπει να γίνει άμεσα επίσκεψη σε Δερματολόγο. Βέβαια, οι ραβδώσεις των ονύχων είναι συνήθεις στις έγχρωμες φυλές και πολλές από αυτές είναι αβλαβείς, αλλά η πρόληψη και η έγκαιρη διάγνωση είναι πάντοτε η καλύτερη θεραπεία.

• Ingrown nails occur when the nail grows into the skin. This can be caused by genetic predisposition, injury, cutting nails too short, wearing tight shoes, or bad nail hygiene. When nails enter the skin, they can cause bacterial infection on the nail or the surrounding tissue. The skin may become red, painful and swelling may occur.

• Periungual warts affect toe and finger nails and may even affect the underlying skin. These should be treated immediately.

• Ps oriasis does not only affect the skin; it can also affect the nails. Some of the most common deformities caused by psoriasis are nail ridges and pitting, discoloration or red streaks. It can affect one or several nails and can be an early sign of psoriatic arthritis, a type of psoriasis that afflicts arthritic patients.

• Although melanoma is an aggressive form of skin cancer, it caught early, it can be treated. If you notice dark streaks or spots on your nails, without previous injury, you should see a dermatologist immediately. The event was an initiative of the Cultural & Dog Welfare association of Kifissia "A.G.A.P.I." chaired by Kyveli Laskari, under the auspices of the Municipality of Athens and Kifissia. Eight dogs were adopted and this was the positive indication of the event success. The event was presented by Annita Nathanael and Costas Sommer and the music was edited by Maggie Charalambidou.

TΤο φετινό καλοκαίρι σημειώσαμε ρεκόρ αφίξεων. Πιστεύετε ότι αυτό μπορεί να συνεχιστεί και τη χειμερινή περίοδο και πως σχεδιάζετε να το υποστηρίξετε; Είναι γεγονός ότι παρά τις επαναλαμβανόμενες, πρωτοφανείς κρίσεις, που βιώνουμε σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο, παρά την απώλεια των αγορών της Ρωσίας και της Ουκρανίας, ο ελληνικός τουρισμός έχει μια εξαιρετικά καλή πορεία μέσα στο 2022 και αυτόφάνηκε από την αρχή της χρονιάς. Ηεπίσημη έναρξη σεζόν έγινε ήδηαπό τον Μάρτιο, νωρίτερα από κάθε άλλη φορά. Σύμφωνα με στοιχεία της Τράπεζας της Ελλάδος, το πρώτοεξάμηνο υπολείπεται μόλις κατά 5% περίπου του ’19. Με δεδομένο ότι ο πόλεμος στην Ουκρανία ξέσπασε Φεβρουάριο, καταλαβαίνετε πόσο σημαντικό είναι. Οι ταξιδιωτικές εισπράξεις τον Ιούνιο άγγιξαν τα 2,6 δισ. ξεπερνώντας τις αντίστοιχες του 2019. Οι αφίξεις επιβατών από το εξωτερικό τον Ιούλιο, στα 14 περιφερειακά αεροδρόμια της χώρας, κινήθηκαν πέρα από κάθε προσδοκία, με 5,127 εκατομμύρια επιβάτες έναντι 4,490 εκατομμυρίων τον αντίστοιχομήνα του 2019. Οι αριθμοί αυτοί αποτελούν νέο ρεκόρ αφίξεων μεαύξηση 13,9% περίπου. Κάνω ειδική αναφορά στα περιφερειακά αεροδρόμια, καθώς θέλω να τονίσω ότι σταθερός και πρωτεύων στόχος του ΕΟΤ είναι η ισόρροπη διασπορά των ταξιδιωτικών ροών, σε όλη την επικράτεια. Η Ελλάδα ήταν πρώτηκαι τον Αύγουστο σε όλη την Ευρώπη με 5% περισσότερες πτήσεις σε σχέση με τον αντίστοιχο μήνα του 2019. Για τους φθινοπωρινούς μήνες, όλες οι ενδείξεις είναι ιδιαίτερα θετικές. Αυτό φαίνεται από τις κρατήσεις και από την κίνηση πιστωτικών καρτών. Επίσης, από τα γραφεία εξωτερικού τουΕΟΤ, έχουμε αιτήματα για επέκταση των επικοινωνιακών πλάνων προβολής της χώρας μας, στις παραδοσιακές αγορές μας. Νομίζω ότι ο χειμώνας και η χρονιά που έχουμε μπροστά μας, με μια τέτοια ενεργειακή και πληθωριστική κρίσηπου βιώνουμε σε διεθνές επίπεδο, καθιστά διάτρητη κάθε πρόβλεψη.Βλέπετε ο Τουρισμός είναι πάντα ιδιαίτερα ευαίσθητος δέκτης των οικονομικο-κοινωνικών κλυδωνισμών. Γι’ αυτό προτιμώ να εστιάσω στο τι κάνουμε εμείς μέσα σε ένα τέτοιο περιβάλλον.Οι επιχειρήσεις ορεινών όγκων είναι σίγουρα οι πιο ευάλωτες αυτό το χειμώνα. Είμαι όμωςβέβαιη, πως η Πολιτεία θα

λάβει τα απαραίτητα μέτρα στήριξής τους. Αναγκαία μέτρακαι για το σύνολο του κλάδου, βέβαια. Ο ίδιος ο Πρωθυπουργός ανέφερεστη ΔΕΘ ότι «προκειμένου να επεκταθεί η τουριστική περίοδος και τον χειμώνα, θα εγκρίνουμε πρόσθετα κονδύλια. Θα διατεθούν ώστε η Ελλάδα να διαφημιστεί από κοινού με τον ΕΟΤ, με αεροπορικές εταιρείες, με tour operators, για το διάστημα έως τον Μάρτιο του 2023». Οι καμπάνιες του ΕΟΤ, «GREECE DOES HAVE A WINTER» και «GREEKEND», για τον ορεινό τουρισμό και τον τουρισμό πόλεων αντίστοιχα, θα συνεχιστούν σταθερά, ώστε η πατρίδα μας να είναι «always on» επικοινωνιακά. Όμως, πέρα από τις αναγκαίες οικονομικές ενισχύσεις του κλάδου και το κατάλληλο media mix, αυτό που προέχει είναι να αλλάξουμε εδώ και τώρα νοοτροπίες και αντιλήψεις χρόνων. ■ Τhis summer had a record-breaking number of arrivals. Do you think this can keep going through the winter, and if so, how will you support it?

Greek tourism had an excellent trajectory in 2022, and this was obvious from the start of the year, despite the repeated, extraordinary crises we are experiencing at the global level and despite the loss of the markets of Russia and Ukraine.

The official start of the season formally started in March, earlier than ever before. According to data from the Bank of Greece, the first half of this year was only 5% lower than in 2019. You realize how crucial it is considering that the war in Ukraine started in February. In June, travel receipts were 2.6 billion, surpassing similar figures from 2019. At the nation’s 14 regional airports, foreign passenger arrivals in July surpassed all predictions, with 5.127 million travelers compared to 4.490 million in the corresponding month of 2019. These figures represent a record for new arrivals, up roughly 13.9%.

I specifically mention regional airports to emphasize that the GNTO’s fixed and primary objective is the uniform distribution of travel flows across the country.

Greece was also first in Europe in August, with 5% more flights than in the same month in 2019.

All indications point to an especially promising autumn. Bookings and credit card transactions demonstrate this. We have also received requests from the GNTO’s international offices to extend the programs for promoting our country in our traditional markets.

I think that the winter and the year ahead of us, considering the international energy and inflationary crisis, make all predictions meaningless. Tourism is always a particularly sensitive receiver of economic and social shocks. That is why I prefer to focus on what we do in such an environment.

Businesses in mountainous areas are undoubtedly the most susceptible this winter. However, I am convinced that the government will take the necessary steps to assist them. These are, of course, necessary measures for the entire industry.

The Prime Minister declared at the Thessaloniki International Fair “Additional funding will be approved to extend the tourism season into the winter. They will be used to promote Greece alongside the GNTO, airlines, and trip operators until March 2023.”

The GNTO campaigns “GREECE DOES HAVE A WINTER” and “GREEKEND” for mountain tourism and city tourism, respectively, will run indefinitely, ensuring that our country’s communication activities are “always on.”

However, beyond the essential financial support for the sector and the appropriate media mix, it is important to change attitudes and perceptions that have existed for years.

■ Is culture a magnet for making our country a year-round tourist destination?

We are now focused on and developing types of thematic tourism in Greece, which act as a catalyst for the season’s extension. Gastronomy, culture, sports, wellness tourism, city breaks, and the other special themed activities we strongly encourage today, have no season, and help to strengthen all-year tourism.

This year we may “cash out” in December rather than October! It is highly possible that we will reach 19 billion euros this year.

The country’s international image must be repositioned as a leading, sustainable destination and a well-being country that values the environment, culture, and authenticity of local societies.

■ Βιώσιμοςτουρισμός. Τι γίνεται ήδη προς αυτή την κατεύθυνση; Έχουμεπολύδρόμο

ενισχύει καταλυτικά την επέκταση της σεζόν. Η Γαστρονομία, ο Πολιτισμός, ο Αθλητισμός, ο τουρισμός Ευεξίας, το city break και οι υπόλοιπες ειδικέςθεματικές δράσεις, που προβάλουμε πλέον δυνατά, δεν έχουν εποχήκαιενισχύουν τον all year round τουρισμό. Η υιοθέτηση των αρχών της πράσινης και της γαλάζιας οικονομίας, της κυκλικής οικονομίας, ψηφιοποίηση και ενεργειακή αναβάθμιση όλων των τουριστικών επιχειρήσεων.

Σε αυτά τα πλαίσια ο ΕΟΤ θα ενισχύσει την ανάδειξη και προβολή αειφόρων προορισμών, σε όλη την Ελλάδα. Αυτή είναι η μεγάλη πρόκληση, το μεγάλο στοίχημα και οφείλουμε να το κερδίσουμε. Εί-

μαι βέβαιη πως το2023 θαείναι χρονιά «σταθμός», σε αυτή την κατεύθυνση.

■ Sustainable tourism. What steps are we taking in this direction? We still have a long way to go in this area. In recent years, there has been a convergence in demand for “environmentally friendly” tourism, especially now that the crisis has acted as an accelerator of change, in terms of a shift in quality rather than quantity.

Sustainable development combined with geopolitics, digital infrastructure, and the upgrading of essential infrastructures like those in the health sector will all be of major significance to us going forward.

Without a doubt, hyper-tourism is currently creating issues in some locations, and if we are not watchful, it may also expand to other areas!

Adoption of green and blue economy principles, circular economy principles, digital transformation standards, and energy efficiency standards by all tourism-related businesses.

In light of this, GNTO will intensify its efforts to promote sustainable tourism across Greece. This is a big challenge, a big gamble, and we have to succeed. I am confident that 2023 will be a milestone year in this direction.

As I previously stated in general for the entire country, the heightened flows, but particularly for Corfu, exposed the serious structural deficiencies.

Is quality what guarantees even bigger revenue, or is quantity ultimately what matters? The sector and our economy were starved for revenue after the pandemic lasted for two years.

Appropriate, if it does not lead to an opportunistic approach that lacks a strategy and a plan. Don’t forget, sustainable development is currently a one-way path!

One might argue, sustaining development now, amid an energy crisis that puts a brake on every green initiative?

The expression “the island was drowned by tourists” will occur, in my opinion, if we don’t act now.

■ What differentiates investing in hotels from other kinds of real estate?

The main distinction between investment and residential real estate is the absence of sentimentality in the former. It is pure mathematics and the development perspective of the property depends on the strategy of each company or fund and the decision-making process about how or where to invest. When it comes to owner-occupancy in residential real estate, emotion rules because the buyer selects the home that "speaks to his soul" and believes he can create priceless memories there with his family. Every type of property requires a different approach, but hotels and their sale in particular call for specialized understanding because they are essentially in a different universe with their language and terminology.

Η Κέρκυρα ξαφνιάζει συνέχεια με κρυμμένα μυστικά ακόμα και τους κατοίκους της, όποτε είναι δύσκολο να περιοριστώ μόνο σε τρία μέρη. Θα προτείνω τρεις διαδρομές εκτός της Παλιάς Πόλης. Όταν βρίσκω χρόνο, μου αρέσει να παίρνω το αυτοκίνητο και ξεκινώντας από Παλαιοκαστρίτσα να ανηφορίζω προς Λάκωνες όπου μπορεί κάποιος να θαυμάσει την ωραιότερη πανοραμική θέα του νησιού. Συνεχίζω προς το Αγγελόκαστρο ένα βυζαντινό κάστρο που κυριαρχεί στην κορυφή μια πανέμορφης πλαγιάς και τέλος κατηφορίζω πάλι προς το χωριό των Δουκάδων όπου θα φας την καλύτερη «παστιτσάδα» στο νησί. Μια αλλά διαδρομή που πάντα με συναρπάζει ξεκινάει από το ακρωτήρι του Δράστη στο βορειοδυτικότερο σημείο της Κέρκυρας ένα μαγευτικό παρθένο μέρος μακριά από τις πολυσύχναστες παραλίες. Επόμενη στάση για φαγητό στον σαν ξεχασμένο από το χρόνο οικισμό της Παλαιάς Περίθειας σε μια από τις πολλές παραδοσιακές ταβέρνες παρέα με τη Μαριώ την αλεπού του χωριού. Συνέχεια για παραδοσιακό παγωτό στου Σπίγκου και για καφέ στο γραφικό λιμανάκι της Κασσιόπης. Τέλος, θα προτείνω

Name three places that first time visitors should visit in Corfu. Corfu has so many hidden secrets, even residents keep getting surprised, so it is difficult to narrow down the experience to three places. I will suggest three routes besides the Old City. When I have time, I like getting in the car and driving from Palaiokastritsa up to Lakones, where one can enjoy the best panoramic view of the island. Ι keep driving towards Aggelokastro, a byzantine castle that dominates the top of a beautiful mountainside, and then I go down to the village of Doukades, where you can eat the best “pastitsada”. Another route I always enjoy, starts at Cape Drastis in the northwesternmost part of Corfu, a majestic virgin area, away from crowded beaches. Next stop: Lunch at the settlement of Palaia Peritheia, a place that seems lost in time. People can have lunch at one of the several traditional tavernas, and meet Mario, the village’s fox. Visitors can then continue to Spigos’ confectionary for traditional ice cream, and coffee at the picturesque harbor of Kassiope. My third suggestion is to follow the route at the southwestern part of the island. Starting at the sand dunes in Halikouna, visitors can walk to the cedar forest and hopefully come across the

flamingos in Lake Korission. It is worth staying late to enjoy one of the best sunsets in the island.

Sustainability. How do you apply it in your hotels?

«Green is the present and the future», that is the main concept all hotel owners should keep in mind when providing services to their customers. It's what our planet needs, what our customers are looking for. In recent years, Voulgaris Hospitality Group keeps making an effort at reducing our energy footprint in all areas. We are managing most of our waste, we have reduced unnecessary energy and water use, we use local products, and our new hotel was built with green architecture. We have received the Green Key certification and we are now looking for a Sustainability Consultant that will help us implement the current principles and materialize new suggestions for a greener future.

What are the characteristics of the locals in Corfu? If you ask people, they will all most certainly answer with “vourlisia”, a kind of a beautiful madness. For me, the people of Corfu have great traditions, especially in music, with 19 bands and 27 choruses, and live in a truly blessed land that sometimes they do not really appreciate as much as they should.

The church of Saint Spyridon, which serves as the

hub, is among the most significant post-Byzantine structures in the city. It was constructed around 1589. The Voulgaris family owned the Saint's tent and were the church's founders. The bell tower is like the one at Venice's Saint George of the Greeks church (San Giorgio dei Greci). There are valuable artifacts and "tamata" in the temple. A lavish silver urn from the 19th century houses the relic of Saint Spyridon the Wonderworker.

Στο δρόμο για το Κανόνι θα αφιερώσουμε ένα πρωινό για να επισκεφθούμε τοΜουσείο Παλαιόπολης (Mon Repos) με τους μαγευτικούς κήπους, την επιβλητική έπαυλη (άλλοτε θερινή κατοικία της πρώην βασιλικής οικογένειας)και τα αρχαιολογικά ευρήματα. Το Γαστούρι (10 χλμ.από την Κέρκυρα) κατάφερε να γοητεύσει την αυτοκράτειρα της Αυστρίας Ελισάβετ(Σίσσυ),ώστε να χτίσει εδώ το επιβλητικόΑνάκτορο «Αχίλλειον», το 1884 -1891, για να χρησιμοποιηθεί ως τόπος ξεκούρασης. Σήμερα, είναι Μουσείο. Θα περιηγηθούμε στουςυπέροχους κήπους του και θα δούμε τα δύο εξαιρετικά αγάλματα: Αχιλλέας Θνήσκων και Αχιλλέας Νικών. Μέσα στο ανάκτορο βρίσκεται η τεράστια ελαιογραφία «Ο Θρίαμβος του Αχιλλέα». Αξίζει μια βόλτα ως τις Μπενίτσες, παλιά ψαράδικο χωριό,σήμερα τουριστικό θέρετρο, με ωραίες ταβέρνες δίπλα στη θάλασσα.

On the northwest coast of Corfu, close to Paleokastritsa, the Byzantine fortress is built at an altitude of 300 meters. It served as the westernmost outpost of both the Despotate of Epirus, to which Corfu also belonged until 1267, and the Byzantine Empire. It was constructed at the start of the 12th century. The Taxiarches and St. Kyriaki churches are still standing inside.

Ανακαλύπτοντας τις ομορφιές του βορρά… Με το αυτοκίνητό μας, αν ακολουθήσουμε τη βόρεια κατεύθυνση, θα συναντήσουμε τις Αλυκές, μια παραλιακή τοποθεσία με εξοχικά σπίτια και τα Γουβιά(παλιά Ενετικός Ναύσταθμος, σήμερα τουριστικό κέντρο).

Λίγα χλμ. πιο κάτω ξεπροβάλλει μέσα από το πράσινο ηΔασιά, που φιλοξενεί μερικά απότα ωραιότερα ξενοδοχειακά συγκροτήματα. Πολύ κοντά βρίσκεται τογραφικό ψαροχώρι Ύψος, με ωραία παραλία και βραδινή ζωή. Συνεχίζονταςτη διαδρομή μας στον παραλιακό δρόμο, συναντάμε χωριά, πνιγμένα στο πράσινο με όμορφες παραλίες, όπως είναι το Μπαρμπάτικαιτο Νησάκιμε υπέροχα χρώματα στα νερά της θάλασσας. Παντού θα βρείτε ταβερνάκια, δίπλα στο κύμα, με ντόπιους μεζέδες,φρέσκο ψάρι και καλό κρασί. Από τα πιο γραφικά λιμανάκια του νησιού, με ωραία παραλία και γαλαζοπράσινα νερά είναι το Καλάμι. Η διαδρομή προς Βορρά είναι ιδιαίτερα όμορφη, καθώς σε κάθε στροφή του δρόμου στις πλαγιές του Παντοκράτορα (το ψηλότερο βουνό της Κέρκυρας) ξεπροβάλλει και ένα διαφορετικό τοπίο. Σε λίγο θα φθάσουμε στην Κασσιώπη, το γραφικό ψαροχώρι με το όμορφο λιμάνι και το περήφανο Κάστρο. Εδώ θα κολυμπήσουμε σε κρυστάλλινα, τιρκουάζνερά. Από την Κασσιώπη, τη Ρόδα και το Σιδάρι γίνονται ημερήσιες εκδρομές με καΐκι στα Διαπόντια Νησιά, τους Οθωνούς, την Ερεικούσακαι το Μαθράκι. Σ’ αυτά μπορεί κανείς να απολαύσει την ομορφιά της φύσης, χωρίς τον τουριστικό συνωστισμό.

και το Canal d’ amour… Εξωτικά χρώματα, περίεργοι σχηματισμοί βράχων, νερά με τροπικά χρώματα και ειδυλλιακοί κολπίσκοι συνθέτουν το τοπίομετά το Σιδάρι. Η περιοχή είναι γνωστήως Canal d’ Amour. Σε κάθε κολπίσκο σχηματίζεται και μια παραλία με κατάλευκη άμμοκαι σμαραγδένια νερά. Τοπίο ονειρικό!

The first Bank in Greece, Ioniki, operated here. Since 1981, the museum houses a remarkable collection of rare banknotes, including a Chinese banknote (silk-printed around 1300), one of the oldest surviving in the world.

Therefore, there are comfortable streets and spacious squares next to the cantons, among which Spianada stands out, rightfully considered the most beautiful square in Greece and the largest in the Balkans. Walk in liston

Liston has a beautiful walkway with cafes and arched terraces. It was built in 1807 by a Frenchman named Mathieu de Lesseps and serves as an example of the architectural style that was prevalent when the French occupied Corfu during the Napoleonic era.

Bounded by the Old or Sea Fort and divided from the city by the Contra Fossa, a moat with a drawbridge. Korifo, the Byzantine city of Corfu, was originally located within. Here we shall come upon the church of Agios Georgios. We shall ascend to the Fortress’s peak and the view from up here is breathtaking!

The New or Stergian Fortress was built between 1576 - 1588, to protect the city from a possible Turkish invasion.

libro d’ oro: the nobility of Corfu

Corfu society was divided among nobility, bourgeois, and commoners throughout the Venetian period. The lowest layer, the “plebaya,” was made up of bio-wrestlers. The only museum that is solely dedicated to the memory of the first Greek Governor is the Kapodistria Museum-Centre of Kapodistrian Studies, which is situated seven kilometers outside of Corfu. Along with personal items of Ioannis Kapodistrias and vintage furniture, it is housed in one of the old rural homes of the Kapodistria family that Maria Kapodistria-Desyllas donated in 1979.

Kanoni

One of the island’s popular tourist spots is Kanoni, which is close to the airport and has a view of Pontikonissi. The 17thcentury Monastery of Panagia Vlacherna is accessible only by a small stretch of land. From the shoreline, one can go to Pontikonissi and see the picturesque Pantokrator chapel. On the road to Kanoni, we will stop at the Paleopolis Museum (Mon Repos) to see the stunning gardens, the imposing mansion (formerly the summer residence of the former Greek royal family), and the archaeological treasures.

Gastari (10 km from Corfu) managed to charm Empress of Austria Elisabeth (Sissi) to build the grandiose “Achillion Palace” in 18841891, to be used as a resting place. It is now a museum.

We will walk through its beautiful gardens and see the two magnificent statues, Achilles of Death and Achilles of Victory. Inside the palace is the huge oil painting “The Triumph of Achilles.”

It is worthwhile to take a stroll to Benitses, an old fishing village, that is now a popular tourist destination with beautiful taverns by the sea.

Discovering the beauties of the north...

If we go north in our car, we will see Alykes, a coastal community with vacation homes, and Gouvia (old Venetian Naval Station, today a tourist center). A few kilometers further down, Dassia, which has some of the best hotel complexes, emerges through the greenery. The charming fishing village of Ypsos, which has a great beach and lively nightlife, is close by. As we go along

the coastal road, we pass by communities that are completely covered in greenery and have stunning beaches, including Barbati and Nisaki, with wonderfully colored waters. Everywhere you will find tavernas, next to the sea, with local snacks, fresh fish, and good wine. Kalami is one of the most picturesque ports on the island, with a nice beach and blue-green waters. The road to the north is especially lovely because on the slopes of

Pantokrator (the highest mountain of Corfu) diverse landscapes can be seen at every turn of the drive. We will soon be in Kassiopi, a quaint fishing village with a lovely port and a majestic castle. Here we will swim in crystal clear, turquoise waters. From Kassiopi, Roda and Sidari you can take daily boat trips to the Diapontia Islands, Othonous, Ereikousa and Mathraki. Here one can enjoy the beauty of nature, without the tourist crowds.

Exotic colors, strange rock formations, waters with tropical colors and idyllic coves make up the landscape after Sidari. The area is known as the Canal d’Amour. A beach with white sand and emerald waters forms in each cove. Dreamy landscape!

Heading west…

The western coast faces the Adriatic and literally enchants us. About 26 km from Corfu is Paleokastritsa, which, according to many scholars, is considered the Homeric city of the Phaeacians. The view from above, as we descend, is unique and the waters blue-green and crystal clear. To the right, on top of the hill, is the historic monastery of Paleokastritsa, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. After the village of Krini is Angelokastro, a fortress built on a steep peak and overlooking the endless blue... The most beautiful view of the area may be enjoyed from the village of Lakones and the position “Bella Vista”.
