La minería y el medio ambiente Mining and the environment

E
n sus inicios, la minería tenía como objetivo el aprovechar los recursos minerales sin considerar los impactos en el ambiente, en la salud humana o en la biodiversidad, que esta actividad pudiera tener, por la contaminación de agua o de aire, o por el abandono de las instalaciones mineras dejándolos como espacios degradados y contaminados. Sin embargo, la preocupación de las empresas mineras, gobierno y de la sociedad en general hacia el medio ambiente cada vez es mayor, llevando con esto un cambio en la forma de pensar y de actuar, logrando la implementación de medidas para el cuidado y la prevención de impactos al medio ambiente. La minería en Mexico tiene que cumplir con varias leyes y normas que la obligan no solo a restaurar los espacios explotados, sino también a evaluar y mitigar los efectos en el ambiente, así como de caracterizar los efectos negativos antes de comenzar la explotación del mineral, en estudios de línea base, ademas de establecer las medidas para disminuir dichos impactos posibles al entorno con la operación, de o que son impactos acumulativos y residuales.
