Looking back over the last few weeks, with Interzum and Ligna proving once again the compelling attraction of live, face-to-face events, I’ve been mulling the events coming through over the next 12 months.

After the traditional summer pause, autumn arrives and Sicam in Pordenone and Woodtech in Istanbul are important options in October this year. Then as we move into next year, there are numerous interesting options for manufacturers to ponder – and these commitments are of course in addition to presumably another year of the popular ‘at home’ events too. In summary, the year ahead will feature new events making their debut and a revitalised iteration of what historically has been our most important industry-wide event making a welcome return.

PRODUCTION

First up in April next year is the new Furniture Component Expo event organised by the British Furniture Manufacturers trade association. This is followed in May by Materials & Finishes, the Montgomery Group’s re-titled and re-imagined W Exhibition. Also in May, in fact overlapping the last two days of Materials & Finishes, Xylexpo in Milan makes a return to its traditional timing. In June 2024 there is another new option to consider, Interzum Forum Italy, a combined show and conference taking place in Bergamo, Italy.

To my reckoning, that’s a busy 12 months of events to contemplate with a myriad options for those looking to understand the options available to aid their company’s development and growth. Now, where did I put my diary?

Häfele UK welcomes Richard Curtis as new MD

Häfele UK has announced Richard Curtis as its new Managing Director, in the year the group celebrates its 100th birthday.

Curtis joined the manufacturer and distributor of furniture fittings, architectural hardware, LED lighting and electronic access control systems earlier this year. He brings with him more than 20 years’ experience as a Managing Director across manufacturing and distribution businesses connected with the building products and lighting market sectors.

His key skills lie in managing sales organisations, driving profitable growth and developing new market opportunities through

brand leadership and strong customer relationships. Moving forward, he will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the business, driving growth and building on the major successes it has already achieved.

A management buy-out at Movac Group Limited has seen existing directors – pictured from left: Robert Lang, Craig Matthews and Keith Parvin – acquire the company ahead of a strategic five-year growth plan.

The shareholding group consists of the current leadership team of Robert, Craig and Keith who remain in the business, while Mark Smith, Managing Director, retires from the company after many years of successful leadership.

British Furniture Manufacturers has appointed a new membership engagement manager with a wealth of experience in a trade body environment.

Joanna Privett joins the BFM team on a number of new projects, as well as providing a first point of contact for members’ communications with the association.

With more than seven years’ experience in membership support at the British Parking Association, Joanna brings in-depth knowledge

and skill in benefits and services for trade body members.

Her work with the BFM includes working on the delivery of the trade body’s brand-new Furniture Component Expo in 2024, which will link furniture manufacturers with the components sector in a one-stop shop format.

Amanda Waring installed as 61st Master of The Furniture Makers’ Company

The annual Installation Ceremony took place in the Old Ballroom at the Mansion House, the official residence of the Lord Mayor of London. During the same ceremony, Brian Ahern and Debbie Johnson were also installed as the new senior and junior warden of the Company, respectively.

Amanda, a furniture and award-winning garden designer, has been a member of the livery since 1990 and has sat on its Court (board) for 15 years.

The ceremony was followed by the celebratory dinner in the iconic venue’s stunning Egyptian Room. Around 180 guests were in attendance to celebrate the new Master’s installation and were joined by City dignitaries including Alderman Alison Gowman, who was representing the Rt Hon The Lord Mayor Nicholas Lyons.

Amanda Waring, Master of The Furniture Makers’ Company, said: “I feel both honoured and privileged to have been installed as Master of this vibrant livery company. Together, with

my trusted senior and junior wardens, Brian Ahern and Debbie Johnson, I am looking forward to representing the Furniture Makers.

“History and traditions are an important part of the Furniture Makers and I am proud to be Master during the year we celebrate our 60th anniversary as a livery company of the City of London. As we look forward to the future of both the livery and the furnishing industry, I will be launching our ambitious ‘60 for 60’ campaign in June. “We will be honouring 60 young people under 35 years of age who are currently working in the industry and demonstrating exceptional commitment to their career. The ‘60 for 60’ campaign will recognise these 60 outstanding people as the ‘ones to watch’ and those who we consider to be future leaders of the industry and our livery. This is the major campaign for my year as Master, and I’m very excited about it as I think it’s an excellent way of demonstrating to young people in our sector that we are an industry that cares about them and recognises the vital role they play.”

Blum: committed to sustainability

In a separate area of its trade fair stand and on the ‘Boulevard of Sustainability’ at interzum in Cologne, Blum demonstrated the values of the family-run company and its commitment to sustainable business. The focus was on the challenge of precisely analysing the life cycle of the furniture in order to derive and implement appropriate measures.

To preserve natural resources for future generations – a promise anchored in Blum’s fundamental orientation statement. The family

business therefore largely focuses on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, established by the United Nations, in their day-to-day activities. In order to demonstrate and substantiate these efforts, the Austrian fittings specialist showed its visitors at interzum 2023 concrete examples of sustainable action. Measures from areas such as energy and resources, transport and mobility as well as product sustainability were presented in a separate stand area on the North Boulevard of the trade fair centre, which this year was christened the “Boulevard of Sustainability”. How sustainable is furniture?

The company not only focuses on its own products, but also holistically on the entire life cycle of a piece of furniture – from the production of the raw materials, through all the manufacturing and assembly steps, until its usage and final disposal. This gives rise to questions such as: at which point in this life cycle are the most CO2 equivalents created? Where is the greatest potential for savings to

The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) has joined forces with the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) and Community Wood Recycling to support timber window frame recycling across the construction industry.

Open to all BWF members, the recycling scheme will collect any waste wood for recycling – including timber frames and offcuts – where a designated volume has been accumulated.

Through Community Wood Recycling, 100% of the wood supplied is reused or recycled, meaning none of the waste collected will end up in landfill.

Not only does this make timber a more sustainable construction material than ever, the scheme also creates jobs, training, and volunteering opportunities for disadvantaged people.

Helen Hewitt, CEO of the British Woodworking Federation, said: “We know that our members do everything they can to make the most efficient use of their raw material, but we wanted to help them go even further. That’s why we’re delighted to be working with the

“Timber is already recognised as a sustainable building material, and this partnership helps make it even more so. By joining the scheme, we’re helping our sector reduce waste and contribute more towards a circular economy. The scheme will allow our members to make a conscious effort to reduce

the amount of wood ending up in landfill, while at the same time helping provide local training and employment opportunities.”

Chris Beedel, Head of Advocacy & Stakeholder Relations at the GGF, commented: “We have already seen huge success with our PVC-U and aluminium recycling schemes and are now pleased to be able to offer a similar solution for installers of timber frames.

“We aim to make all our recycling schemes as user-friendly as possible. And with that in mind, waste timber materials can have fixtures and fittings attached and be left in a designated area on site. Waste is collected when 12 cubic yards of timber has accumulated, meaning companies save on expensive skip costs. Community Wood Recycling can also provide a certificate of recycling for additional peace of mind for installers and the end customer.”

The UK creates 4.5m tonnes of waste wood each year. Last year, Community Wood Recycling retrieved nearly 24,000 tonnes of wood, a figure the scheme’s partners aim to increase through this initiative.

Big Shots fundraiser raises £35,000 for charity

The 28th edition of Big Shots, the popular clay pigeon shoot organised in aid of The Furniture Makers’ Company, has raised an enormous £35,000 for the charity. The fundraiser, which is supported by Furniture Village, took place in early June and was once again held at Holland & Holland in Northwood, Middlesex, one of the UK’s premier shooting destinations. Around 150 big hitters from companies including Blum, Crofts & Assinder, Emma Sleep, Emmiera

Group, Harrison Spinks, Haskins, Hypnos, Furniture Village, Ocee & Four Design, Panaz andTempur made up 36 teams.

After a tasty breakfast, Jonny Westbrooke, CEO of The Furniture Makers’ Company, welcomed the guests before the team from digital agency Biglight signalled the start of the 100-bird competition by firing Holland & Holland’s antique cannon. The teams then leisurely made their way round eight stands, manned by Holland & Holland’s

excellent gun stewards, set in the estate’s 60 acres of stunning open countryside.

The sun was shining by midmorning with the air filled with the sounds of cracks and pops and laughing. Once the final shots were fired, guests were able to relax and chat in the summer sunshine during a drinks reception before sitting down to a delicious threecourse meal in the club house. The fun-packed day finished with a charity auction and raffle, followed by the results of the shooting competition, with the awards presented by Amanda Waring, Master of The Furniture Makers’ Company.

Jonny Westbrooke, CEO of The Furniture Makers’ Company, said: “We are immensely grateful to all who joined us at Big Shots, making it an unforgettable day while raising a substantial amount for our charity. This generous contribution will have a great impact on the lives of those entering and already involved in the UK furnishing

The Swift Group partners with HOMAG to completely redesign its production facility

Founded in 1964 by Ken Smith, the Swift Group has grown to become one of the largest manufacturers of caravans and holiday homes in the UK. With a turnover in excess of £300m, it is unique in that it operates in all three sectors of the market – caravans, motorhomes and holiday homes. The development of the business has been built on the simple principle of making products that innovate in the key areas of design, quality and value for money.

In 2021 Swift undertook a review of its machining facilities with a view to improving the efficiency and production output of this part of its manufacturing process.

“We were experiencing high product demand and needed to significantly increase our manufacturing capacity,” explains Swift Group’s CEO, James Turner. “The easiest solution would have been to simply replace the existing

machinery on a like for like basis. Whilst this would have improved our capacity in the shortterm, it wouldn’t have given us the kind of stepchange we envisaged for the long-term growth of the business.

“In assessing the situation internally, we developed a vision for the Swift Group that would require a complete redesign of our existing machining facility and the work flow through it. The vision was driven by five key factors: the need for growth, improved efficiency, a single directional work flow through the facility, simplified processes and the replacement of the current machinery.”

Team work – a vital ingredient for success

“Once we agreed a strategy to drive the business forward, we appointed an internal team consisting of Lee Atkinson, (Head of Manufacturing), Graham Jacobs (Head of Facilities) and Paul Cowell (Senior Machine Shop Manager) to work alongside Phil Pitchford and Alan Betteridge from HOMAG UK. Working closely together, they were able to design a solution that would end up putting Swift at the forefront of the leisure vehicle and holiday home manufacturing market.

“The remit was clear; HOMAG had to deliver a number of essential elements including a high output saw cell with a compact footprint; a production cell with multiple nesting CNCs to machine Swift’s many components; a high output nesting CNC for machining melamine faced chipboard (MFC) panels for holiday homes and several edge banding machines to provide additional capacity for processing both curved and straight panels.

“With the floor area of our machining facility limited to 3,200m2, fitting the number of machines necessary in the desired work flow pattern was no easy matter. The new cells had to deliver high output with high quality finishing. It was important, therefore, that the machines offered fast rates of acceleration and rapid feed speeds to minimise cycle times.

“The solution also had to ensure that workforce safety was of the highest priority. One consequence of this was the elimination of the manual handling of large, heavy panels. The set-up, therefore, had to provide safe transfer of these unfinished panels from the storage area to each of the CNC processing machines without the need to use forklift trucks in the production area.”

Specifying and ordering more than 15 machines

With the layout of the cells agreed and specifications of each machine finalised, orders were placed. They included seven CENTATEQ N-700 CNC nesting machines with end-on loading and reduced length outfeed tables to minimise the footprints.

These N-700 CNCs would be fed with large panels direct from storage via a clever trolley system running on rails in the floor and moved by the operator to each machine as required. Additionally, orders were placed for two four-axis twin head gantry CENTATEQ N-600 Concept 2 nesting CNCs with scissor tables.

For the high output saw cell, Swift ordered a SAWTEQ B-300 angular panel dividing saw. This saw is designed to handle high volumes with maximum precision in continuous operation. Completing the order were two EDGETEQ T-100 edge banders, an EDGETEQ T-200, both for shaped parts post-processing, and the highly flexible EDGETEQ S-500 edge bander which provides both PUR and airTec glue options. This cell was finished off with a LOOPTEQ O-300 automated return system for speed and efficiency.

James Turner takes up the story again, “Delivery of the machinery was phased from August 2022 through to May 2023. The project team did an exceptional job planning the removal and disposal of the existing machinery, whilst scheduling the deliveries and installation of the new equipment.

“In the end, every single piece of machinery in the facility was either replaced or moved. Yet throughout the disruption the manufacturing team never missed a delivery date for components, such was the level of planning and attention to detail.

“The HOMAG engineers who installed the machinery did an outstanding job. The machines were commissioned and our operators trained with the minimum of fuss. It speaks volumes that within a week we were fully up to speed with each new production cell as it came on stream. I have to say, the results have been impressive.

”The cycle times on the new machinery show

substantial improvements over the previous set-up,” says James. “We are already seeing capacity increases in excess of 25 percent and the entire manufacturing operation is far more efficient than before.

“When we decided to partner with HOMAG on what was a colossal project, we did so for three very clear reasons: the performance of the HOMAG machinery and software; the reliability – the build quality of HOMAG machines, and the excellent service and support offered by the HOMAG team both in the UK and Germany.

“We have taken out a service contract with HOMAG which gives us complete peace of mind. The HOMAG engineers regularly service the machines and make sure they are all in tiptop condition, keeping downtime negligible. The fact that we have a large number of the same machines means we can hold key spare parts on site further protecting ourselves from potential production interruptions.”

A partnership for the future

“It’s been an exciting ride to say the least, but working in partnership, both companies have risen to the challenges this ambitious, £2.2m project has thrown up. Due to the meticulous planning there have been very few issues, which is evidence of the hard work both teams have put in. It also underlines the fact that with HOMAG, we have a committed partner for the long-term.

“The result of this teamwork is clear to see. Not only do we have a manufacturing facility that will support the growth of the business for many years to come, but also it is one that leads the market in leisure vehicle and holiday home manufacturing,” concludes Turner.

It has long been the tradition to give ships names, Amarjit Binji – or rather his children – went further and named his Ranheat boiler system Gloria.

Chris Franklin MD at Ranheat Engineering, a leading UK manufacturer of wood combustion equipment-continues his series of articles exclusively for Furniture and Joinery Production This issue he looks at one of his most successful customers, and their boiler system Gloria.

Amarjit Binji is a time-served carpenter and joiner/wood machinist – he is now CEO of AJB Woodworking Ltd T/A AJB Group based in Corby.

From humble beginnings in Oadby Leicestershire the AJB Group has continued its growth driven by its founder Amarjit Binji. Last year Amarjit was awarded Entrepreneur of the Year Award at the very competitive Midlands Business Awards 2022.

Chris Franklin writes: “I first met Amarjit in 2004 when I sold him a 150kW warm air heater, this was for his site in Oadby. As AJB Group continued to grow and expand, it wasn’t that long before that this needed changing to a 300kW warm air system and a much bigger storage silo.

When they expanded again to another site in Corby, a much bigger boiler system was needed. This time it was a Ranheat 980 kW system, that being boiler based, it was able to receive support under the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive.”

Amarjit has always led from the front, never asking anyone to do something he wasn’t prepared to do himself, so initially he looked after the new boiler system. He continues to monitor Gloria personally.

Gloria was named by Amarjit’s children, Jai and Aaron, and ‘she’ is fitted with the latest Ranheat ceramic flue gas filter system and automated tube cleaning. The filter and boiler tubes are cleaned using compressed air released by fast acting solenoid valves. When a valve triggers it expels a sharp pulse of air that creates a shockwave down the filter element or boiler tube. This gives a loud hiss that Amarjit’s’ children, Jai and Aaron, described as ‘Gloria sneezing!’

With a boiler now close on 1mW there was plenty of capacity, so as well as heating the entire factory and extensive canteen facility, the boiler was to provide heating and replacement air to an extensive spray facility in the new factory.

Ranheat designed and installed the entire pipework distribution system for AJB Group, which includes, amongst other features, a circulated system for the hot water coming from the taps, this was not to save on energy but on water use, so you don’t waste water waiting for the water to come through hot. There is only a short pipe from the ring main to the tap.

A joinery and shopfitting business based in Kent has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology.

Sublime Retail Display in Sittingbourne has been established 11 years and primarily manufactures furniture and shopfitting items for retail.

Aware of the rising cost of energy, Director at Sublime Retail Display, Steve Baker, realised that the business would benefit from burning the waste wood and offcuts from the manufacturing processes to generate free heating for the business – so contacted Wood Waste Technology.

“We recognised that purchasing a wood waste heater could reduce our wood waste disposal bills, whilst also eliminating heating bills,” Steve explains. “To keep the area warm in the winter months we were using gas heaters, but realised a wood waste heater could make the gas heaters redundant, as we’d generate free heat from burning our waste wood!”

After speaking with Kurt Cockroft at Wood Waste Technology, the business ordered a WT15 heater that was installed by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers.

Rather than being situated within Sublime Retail Display’s workshop, the wood waste heater was installed on a pre-developed site just outside the building. As a result, the heat was able to be pumped into a couple of other neighbouring businesses who share the site, helping them to save money on heating bills too!

“We’re delighted with our purchase,” says Steve. “The wood waste heater keeps the workshop warm, even on really chilly days, and it’s very easy to use. I’d estimate we’re saving around £800 a month on skip hire, as we need as least two fewer skips than we used to. We’re also no longer paying for gas to heat the workshop, which in the current climate is a huge blessing! Established over 35 years ago, Mark Finn Laboratory Furniture is a family-run business based in Keighley, West Yorkshire. In addition, we visited another furniture manufacturer that already had a DRILLTEQ V-200 CNC in its production facility. The visit enabled us to get a more ‘warts and all’ unbiased opinion of the machine’s performance in a real working environment.

“The capabilities of the DRILLTEQ V-200 are impressive, but our decision to invest in one was helped by the popularity of the model in the marketplace. These were the flexibility of the drilling head, a compact footprint (mainly governed by how jobs are fed into the machine), the build quality and hence the reliability of the CNC and, of course, its functionality.

Founded in 1986, Waywood assimilates the varied skillsets of three furniture designers/ makers, with backgrounds as diverse as fine art, cabinetmaking, boat building, computeraided design and CAD/CAM manufacturing.

These highly experienced and time-served craftsmen have always shown a penchant for experimentation in their work and, sparked by an interest in CAD/CAM technology, have created a workshop with one foot firmly rooted in craft traditions, and one stepping out into the future.

“We often approach problem solving from completely different directions,” comments Barnaby Scott, owner and founder of Waywood. “Our collaborative design process and approach to problem solving allow a wealth of options for design and making solutions.

“As furniture designers, we are inevitably influenced by contemporary aesthetics, but we are not distracted by passing fashion. The warmth and infinitely variable nature of wood inspires us to treat it with respect, rather than design in a way that ignores the material we are working with. “We think a blend of subtlety and character is key to enduring design.”

It was in 2007 that Waywood added CNC machining to its bow, with a significant part of the business now dedicated to CNC machining as a sub-contracting facility. Today, the business provides machining solutions to artists, designers, furniture makers, interior specifiers and fabricators across a diverse range of design areas.

Everything from a stand-alone cutting service of 2D shapes, to a fully project managed CAD design service, with 3D shaping and assembly, is offered. “Our background as award-winning designers and makers of bespoke furniture means that we can offer a specialism in solid wood shaping and machining which few can equal, and have built a reputation as specialists in solid wood CNC machining,” says Barnaby. “Complexity of work is viewed as a challenge

which we enjoy, and we treat problem solving in partnership with the client, as a standard approach to our work.”

The team was initially able to work around the limitations of its three-axis CNC machine, but began the lengthy process of adding five-axis capability to the business, not only with a view to expanding the capabilities for its own designs, but also to offer a greater range of options to its CNC customers.

Barnaby and CNC manager, Simon Smith, began researching different manufacturers in 2019 to gauge the various options available –these ranged from large format CNC machines to trying out robot arm technology.

“There were some specific criteria in choosing a new machine, ranging from what we could physically fit into the workshop, the limitations of the machines’ different axis and most importantly the accuracy of the machine over the size of the bed,” explains Barnaby.

“Another important factor was making sure the machine software would work with our existing CAD/CAM packages to minimise any further disruption.” >>

Barnaby and Simon both decided on a Maxicam five-axis CNC from Powell CNC, as this particular machine offered many of the required features and maximised the size of machine they could fit into the space.

The upgrade to five-axis machining means Waywood can machine some of the most complex three-dimensional work, both in solid wood and a range of composite/sheet materials.

on the requirements of the customers Manufacturing Execution System. The capability to operate separately or in tandem eliminates the limitations of transportation by a continuous conveyor belt. When combined with the range of machining and processing modules available, the result is a highly productive and flexible solution for the manufacture of furniture and kitchen products etc. which is capable of batch size of one production.

In the example of the turnkey system referenced here, multiple products are automatically presented to the system by Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV). With the AGV docked within the system, a robot is used to depalletise products one at a time and load them to the system for processing. The products are initially placed to an orientation/datum fixture before being loaded to the MTS which moves the product between the various processing stages. Products are positioned accurately at each of the different workstations, where robots – fitted

with the appropriate end of arm tooling modules – drill, machine, or assemble the appropriate features required for that product.

The different product handling units are built upon Zimmer Group’s standard and reliable grippers with customised gripper fingers, ensuring long-term durability and system availability. State-of-the-art machining technology, thanks to motor spindles that have been developed in-house, provides maximum smooth operation and longevity, providing optimal levels of system uptime and availability. With typical products requiring to be processed and machined on both sides, once the parts have completed their first pass through the system, a robot loads them to an AGV which will then return them to the input side of the system. Here, they will once again be picked from the AGV by robot and re-loaded to the Modular Transport System to allow secondary processing operations to be performed on the other faces / sides of the product. On completion of these final machining or assembly operations the products are placed to an output conveyor for packaging. Another example of Zimmer Group innovation is virtualZ, the digital twin which revolutionises the processes performed throughout the life cycle of a system. In the design phase, virtualZ provides support in testing the system functionality and capacity based on a modelin-the-loop simulation by providing module and component models for the digital twin. In the development and commissioning phases, virtualZ offers comprehensive options for simulations from the software-in-the-loop simulation to the hardware-in-the-loop real-time simulation.

In the operational phase of the system, the digital twin virtualZ can operate as a digital shadow in a virtual space with a time delay from the real system to perform optimisations and validations via test runs in the virtual world. The digital shadow can interpolate wear in advance or display notes on the causes of this wear using comparison data.

Rehau shows its ‘passion for colour’

REHAU is once again inspiring furniture manufacturers, carpenters, architects and everyone involved in interior design with its latest colour collection, ‘Passion for colour 2023’.

This collection is a real feast for the senses: six colours ranging from warm, earthy Curcuma Gold to fiery Chilli Red and a soft Vanilla tone. They have been developed to appeal to all the senses and to set the stage for creative design freedom.

The new exclusive mechanical solutions are also present in both the cutting and pushing systems. A special system, with a 55mm wide toothed belt and 33 strips of hard steel, allows high precision and capacity. The aluminium beam is big and solid; at a height of 135mm and width of 120mm, it is fixed in a steel structure in two parts for better solidity and reliability. The beam is also covered and protected by a special steel cover. All this guarantees a long machine life with no dust and service issues.

Case in point

The production of sofas is sometimes is a complicated process due to the variety of models offered. A small batch size or even ‘batch size 1’ is also not uncommon; it is thus necessary to work job by job. Compared to

older and more traditional cutting systems, the SalvaPush 2000 has become a cost-cutting machine for a major producer. AFK Garden Furniture boosts productivity using robots to automate sanding

Universal Robots’ collaborative robots (or cobots for short) are helping garden furniture manufacturer, AFK Garden Furniture, keep up with demand. Supplied by Bedfordshire-based automation distributor, RARUK Automation, two ceiling-mounted UR10e robots have been installed in the garden furniture company’s sanding workstation.

Based in Lincolnshire, AFK Garden Furniture chose to automate its sanding tasks using a complete surface finishing solution. The solution combines a UR10e collaborative robot with a Mirka AIROS lightweight sanding head and Robotiq’s sanding kit which provides the user with Finishing Copilot software. The software has a built-in path generator which speeds up programming and set-up time.

To extend the reach of the UR10e cobots, AFK Garden Furniture added the 7th axis slide kit from Ewellix, which also comes with a URCap for easy integration with the collaborative robots.

AFK Garden Furniture uses the robots for 10-15 different pieces of furniture. The sanding paths for each individual product type are saved on the cobot’s teach pendant. When the company needs to switch between products, the operator simply presses play on the stored sanding program for that particular product. The move to automate was beneficial for workers, as the cobots can take on complex sanding tasks while human workers tend the robotic cell by feeding it the unfinished product. This eliminates the risk of repetitive strain injury to workers through excessive physical labour. There have also been improvements in terms

of product quality and consistency, as each product type is now sanded the same way every single time.

“Before we installed the robots, we never saw one product sanded the same way,” says Martyn Mitchell, factory manager at AFK Garden Furniture. “Now, every single piece of furniture is identically sanded; our product quality has

exponentially increased.

“Installing these robots has been a brilliant experience,” Mitchell concludes. “Our productivity has gone up by 20 percent, while our operators have been freed up from the strain of sanding to instead focus on managing the robots.” 01462 670044

Tips on software tools to use when creating your next ductwork system design

Nordfab is the originator and the world’s largest manufacturer of clip-together ducting for industrial ventilation and process industry. One of their mindsets is that it should be easy to handle their ductwork.

While NordCAD is functional only with full versions of AutoCAD software, using QuickFit Visual requires no prior knowledge in CAD design.

Quick-Fit Visual allows the user to work with a combination of wizards, duct path definitions, automated pressure loss calculations, and manually placed products to create an appropriate ducting solution.

The perhaps most obvious difference between these two software programs is that NordCAD allows a user to place 2D CAD illustrations of Nordfab’s duct components into a layout, whereas Quick-Fit Visual has a more modern interface with drag-and-drop tool for drawing 3D versions of Quick-Fit ductwork installations.

We have found many similarities and benefits by using either NordCAD or Quick-Fit Visual. Both design tools are connected to Nordfab’s online quoting tool, allowing the customer to receive an almost immediate quote and design, including a Bill of Material list, something that

has proven to be much appreciated by many of Nordfab’s authorised dealers.

“Our authorised dealers often receive requests from their customers to provide them with drawings and additional information about the ductwork being installed. By using Quick-Fit Visaul our dealers can easily create 3D designs to allow their clients to better visualise Nordfab duct systems in their working space,” explains Lee.

Digital twin simulation software delivers hard benefits to CNC users

Prevention of costly collisions and accurate calculation of job lengths are just two of the benefits of digital twin simulation – available to CNC operations via Biesse’s B_SOLID software. Software is often overlooked as a way of driving efficiencies and reducing CNC processing errors. This is mainly because many furniture and joinery manufacturers have experienced the limitations of manual coordinate-based software, whose lack of 3D functionality precludes five-axis simulation.

A sharper simulation tool

However, in recent years, software has advanced significantly, opening up new opportunities for a value-driven approach to CNC software development. Biesse has harnessed these advancements in the shape of its B_SOLID software, which allows machining operations to create a digital twin simulation of the CNC process. With B_SOLID, powerful processing, sophisticated 3D visuals and machine learning capabilities combine to elevate machine software functionality to a new plane.

What does B_SOLID actually do?

B-SOLID gives users a unique view into their CNC machine by creating a digital twin – that is a virtual replica of their real-world machine. Working on the machine’s control panel or on a remote PC, the user can use B_SOLID to design a machining programme for a particular project – whether that is a kitchen, office, bathroom or shop fit. They can then run a rapid and realistic 3D simulation of that programme – de-risking the project by verifying the feasibility of the intended tool path, machining speed and tool selection, and giving an accurate estimate of job completion time.

Collision Control: accident prevention

Unfortunately, clashes between the machine head and work table do happen, particularly during five-axis work, and they have costly consequences – often resulting in pods having to be replaced and damage to the operating unit itself. Historically, to safeguard against collisions, CNC users have run the programme very slowly using a controller – however, this is less than ideal as it eats into valuable machining time.

B_SOLID’s Collision Control feature, which allows users to run the programme in a virtual environment, is the solution to this issue. A collision check carried out in an office setting will highlight any contact between machine parts, enabling the user to correct any errors

and amend the programme without any actual damage being inflicted.

The reason the software is able to calculate whether a collision will occur is because the virtual machine’s parameters and specification are a mirror image of the actual machine – right down to the profile of the tooling and the axis movements.

The sophisticated tool visualisation functionality within B_SOLID is key to this feature. Users can build a visual profile of every tool and aggregate that is available on their machine, along with all of its associated data, and store this within the software’s tool register. They can even assign the tool a cutting edge and a noncutting edge, a rotating speed (RPM), a diameter and – crucially – a length.

Job length calculator: assisting scheduling, staffing and costing

Simulation is not only handy when it comes to preventing collisions, it also means CNC users can calculate exactly how much time will be needed to carry out the required machining operations. This knowledge is extremely useful for pricing purposes – if a kitchen manufacturer knows exactly how a long it will take to machine the panels for each cabinet in a scheme, they can use this as the basis for their costing process. This feature is also helpful when planning staffing and scheduling jobs. Within B_SOLID it is possible to create a ‘work list’ of jobs for a particular machine and the software will calculate how long it will take to run this list of programmes.

With previous generation software, it wasn’t possible to calculate job lengths to the same degree of accuracy because simulations were only able to show the machining cycle. The simulation that can be performed via B_SOLID is far more advanced, taking into account variables

such as ramp up and ramp down speeds as well as tool changes to emulate a real-life machining operation and build an accurate picture of overall job time.

On-site CAD drawing capabilities

Typically, furniture manufacturers will obtain a CAD drawing of the project and import that directly into the machine software. However, if errors are detected or changes to the design are required at this stage, the CAD drawing has to be sent back to the originator and amended. With B_ SOLID this isn’t necessary. Users can manipulate CAD drawings within the machine’s drawing tool, without the need for additional software. This saves time going back and forth to the customer when changes need to be made.

This functionality also extends to imported files from third party software providers. These files are imported as a native Biesse CIX file and therefore can be manipulated in the same way as an original Biesse part programme and can be integrated into the simulator and work list.

JJ Smith’s centenary celebrations set the tone for the next 100 years

Over 150 guests including those from the Smith and Stanley families, staff both current and former, colleagues, customers and firends gathered in Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral to celebrate 100 years of JJ Smith in great style.

The invited guests began filing in on a breezy early summer’s evening to the Lady Chapel for a drinks reception and then were ushered through the impressive candlelit Central Space accompanied by magnificent organ music around the Gothic arches and beyond to a deftly sunken area called The Well in front of the stunning west window and porch. As a place for a get-together of this nature, this Cathedral which is the fifth largest in Europe, was the perfect setting.

Guests came from far and wide, nine countries in fact, most of the international contingent were JJ Smith’s supply partners, many of whom have been ‘part of the family’ for many years.

Getting the evening under way was family member and the MC for the evening Matt

Smith, the former presenter of ITV’s Champions League football coverage – we were in capable hands, he is a Smith after all!

What followed over the next few hours featured a beautiful meal expertly prepared and delivered plus a trip down memory lane with a playlist of music through the ages which had special meaning for the families – following that, there was live entertainment courtesy from the Mersey Beatles encouraging guests to take to the floor.

At the interlude, JJ Smith managing director Rachael Baker took to the stage to formally welcome guests thanking them for attending the centenary celebration – she said: “One of our core values at JJ Smith is building longterm relationships, with employees, customers and suppliers, and I really feel you can see that in action tonight. We have people from nine countries who have travelled to be here, we have people with whom we have done business for decades, and we have employees here tonight

“It is a real honour and privilege to be the person standing here tonight … and you will be pleased to know that you aren’t going to have a long speech from me, instead you’re going to hear from a number of voices who have been part of the JJ Smith story over the years, which I hope you will enjoy.”

A short film then played looking back over the history of the company through the eyes of directors and employees, past and present. The collective respect, passion and commitment for the business shone through – sentiments that have underpinned JJ Smith from inception to this day. The company’s on-going dedication to its staff was clear to see and the film also heard from proud apprentices currently learning their trade in the correct time-served manner.

Rachael then moved on to recognising some

of the team with a short series of awards. “We now have a few awards to hand out,” explained Rachael. “Firstly, we have a small gift for our third year apprentices to acknowledge the hard work and commitment they have shown over the course of their apprenticeship so far, and to wish them well as they head into Year 4.”

Congratulations went to Michael Keegan and Joel Clarke for their fantastic efforts thus far.

“Next, we have our Employee of the Year Award. This is the first time we have given out this award, so this person is the first to get what will become an annual award. I asked for nominations from everyone within the company, and received the most fantastic emails with long lists of reasons why a number of different people should win. According to The British Furniture Manufacturers Association – the organiser of the Furniture Component Expo – the new event has been ‘well-received by the industry, with manufacturing partners supporting the event and exhibitors expressing interest’.

The new event will provide a platform for suppliers to expand their business and will help visiting manufacturers to discover new and innovative ideas.

Taking place at the Telford International Centre, the date for the business-to-business event has been set for the 24-25th April 2024. The Expo will feature a seminar theatre where topical industry insights will be discussed and exhibitors will launch new products, enhancing the experience for visitors.

The seminar program is currently being curated and will feature topics such as regulations, regulatory frameworks and sustainability. An Innovation Trail and a wider industry discussion on import and export and the global economy are also being developed. Expectations already high for SICAM 2023

An increasingly global and comprehensive panorama of international components will be on show at Pordenone this October for the highly anticipated 14th edition of SICAM. With over 600 companies expected to present their latest products to the show’s high quality attendees, SICAM 2023 promises to be the definitive showcase of materials and design for the 2024 furniture season.

The show will feature a new layout this year, right in the heart of the Trade Fair District. Pordenone Fiere has already started work on the construction of a new two-module structure destined to integrate the central hall 5, which will consequently have a more extended layout and will, among other things, have its own bar, like all the other halls.

3000m2 of additional exhibition space will be made available, and accessed directly from the central entrance of the Exhibition Centre. This space will be complete with full services, and will be set up entirely according to the classic SICAM exhibition format. The new structure will be connected to halls 4 and 6 and to the reception area of the Central Entrance of Pordenone Fiere through new walkways.

Intensive and diversified international promotion activities

SICAM 2023’s promotional campaign through the world’s leading furnishing and design trade fairs is also in full swing. Over the course of the first few months of the year, the Exposicam team was present at “Maison & Objet” in Paris, “Kbis” in Las Vegas, “Euroshop” in Düsseldorf, as well as the Indian trade fair “Delhiwood” and “MeM Industrial” in Mexico City.

The last edition of SICAM saw a further increase in the number of foreign countries from which visitors were registered, reaching a record number of 116, and the most concrete premise for developing new international business relationships at the exhibition.

A new logo: a new image to promote continuity

Another new feature for 2023 is a new stylised logo that will distinguish the exhibition’s communication from this season onwards. Minimalist and unadulterated, with a high visual impact, the logo features a choice of colours linked both to more immediate visibility in online communications and to the quest to best represent SICAM’s own characteristics.

A wood-furniture supply chain in robust health 2023 has started well for the Italian furniture industry, perhaps better than expected, although uncertainty (linked above all to the continuation of the war between Russia and Ukraine and its effects on energy and raw material costs, and therefore on margins) still remains a very strong factor.

2022 was a positive year for the furniture industry, which closed with a double-digit growth in the value of production of the entire woodfurniture sector (+12.7% over 2021), reaching a record figure of 57 billion euros (of which approximately 29 billion was for the furniture macro-system).

Exports by the individual wood-furniture sector, which accounts for 41% of total production, were already up 14% on 2021 as of 30th September 2022. The European furniture market, which together with the United States is the most

relevant trade target for Italian production in the sector, grew to reach almost EUR 120 billion in 2022: Germany, the United Kingdom and France remain the countries with the most interesting values.

Wood-furniture companies in Triveneto are confirmed as being brilliant

The recent Report on the Italian Industrial Districts drawn up by Intesa San Paolo has revealed the dynamic growth of the furniture and home system sector in the provinces of Triveneto (+11.4% in Veneto and +19.5% in FriuliVenezia Giulia), with the Pordenone Furniture District in the spotlight (it recorded an increase of Euro 253.6 million in the period JanuarySeptember 2022, equal to an increase of 27.9%). In Veneto, among the districts of the home system, the wood-furnishing district of Treviso showed the strongest growth (+13.0%) thanks to sales in the main European outlet markets (Germany, United Kingdom and France), in Korea and in the Middle East (Qatar and Saudi Arabia). For Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Pordenone Furniture achieved the best results in the United States (+60%), the United Kingdom (+25%) and Spain (+67%); Poland was also in the spotlight, with a jump in sales that more than doubled those of the same period in 2021 (+126%).

Once again the entire supplier industry came together for the return of Interzum. With some 62,000 trade visitors in attendance, the world’s leading international trade fair for suppliers to the furniture and interior design industry was back on form providing a vital and globally unique meeting point for the industry.

The return of Interzum –an unmitigated success

With visitors assembled from 150 countries, the leading international trade fair for suppliers to the furniture and interior design industry exceeded most all expectations and inspired those present across the stands and numerous special event areas over the course of four days.

Around 1600 exhibitors had waited four years to be able to convene at the international industry’s leading event again. Accordingly, exhibitors and trade visitors alike were thrilled to have the chance to make full use of this global platform for communication and commerce once more.

Naturally enought, the exhibiting companies unveiled their innovative solutions and newest products at Interzum and made their mark. “The trade fair could barely have showcased its importance for the industry any better,” said a delighted Oliver Frese, Chief Operating Officer of Koelnmesse. For him, the event’s success is a clear sign “that first-rate flagship events such as interzum are more vital than ever.”

The importance of interzum for the industry was also underlined by the high number of international trade visitors. The countries with

the largest number of visitors were Germany, Italy, Spain and Poland. The number of Turkish visitors was very encouraging, having increased by 16% compared to the previous edition of the trade fair. Likewise, the number of trade visitors from India increased. Considering the current situation with regard to the issuance of visas, the number of Chinese visitors described as satisfactory, too. Exhibitors also praised the high level of expertise among visitors from all countries.

interzum is giving the industry fresh

impetus with its guiding principle of neo-ecology

The trade fair’s central theme was sustainability. With its focus on the overarching concept of neo-ecology, interzum brought sustainability, climate protection, resource efficiency and forwardlooking planning to the fore before the trade fair even began.

It became clear just how much interzum struck a chord with the industry at the trade fair’s stands, where nearly all the exhibiting companies recognised the increasing importance of environmental issues. Aspects such as resource efficiency, smart materials, renewable energies as well as recycling and

upcycling were key to many of the innovations exhibited.

The varied program of events also explored these themes. The products, services and special events were not the only things that honored in on environmental issues. Many of the exhibition stands were also designed with sustainability and resource efficiency in mind. What’s more, the trade fair itself accepts its responsibility and is making active efforts to protect the climate. In the run-up to the event, interzum launched an initiative to make the world’s biggest industry event for furniture production and interior construction more sustainable in the future. Drawing on the experiences gathered this year, the trade fair will explore how it can further integrate sustainability into future events.

Qanto bespoke: an elegant lifting tray system from Ninka with a choice of features

Ninka has successfully launched Qanto, an extendable linear liftup shelf system for corner and other base units. The high-quality product design – fully assembled at the factory and ready to ‘plugand-play’ to maximise storage space in kitchens, living room sideboards and other cabinets – is consistent with an zeitgeist that combines modernity with simplicity, freedom, sustainability and the joy of discovery. Different requirements, lifestyles and budgets define the demands on kitchen and domestic furniture. With this in mind, Blum showed typical living environments and lifestyles in three different domestic settings at interzum. The fittings manufacturer also showcased the wide range of its product portfolio using creative furniture solutions.

The realities of domestic life are differ widely all over the world yet also have many similarities: living spaces are becoming smaller, the desire for optimal space utilisation and flexible solutions is increasing, and rising costs are greatly influencing consumer behaviour. Along with trends such as closing off large areas and individual furniture design, digitalisation has also been introduced into kitchen and home furniture. Visiting Barcelona, Berlin and Singapore

The detail-rich domestic settings gave the impression of being in the home of the people shown. This type of presentation not only provides a realistic experience of existing products and innovations, but also provides a setting for personal discussions. In the young

couple from Barcelona’s first apartment, robust features, optimal use of storage space and versatile usage options of furniture played a major role. Applications such as the SPACE STEP plinth solution or the SPACE TWIN narrow cabinet made the most of the available space. Just around the corner, the lively family in Berlin needed both high-quality and practical

How did you find the interzum, was it as busy as you expected?

Interzum 2023 has proved once again to be the leading international trade fair for furniture production. Following the success of previous editions, and the positive feedback from our customers, Interzum has become for us not only an excellent platform to showcase our products and new developments, but also the meeting place, in which the best customers from around the world come together.

What is Cantisa doing in the way of sustainability and helping the environment as it is an important discussion?

Over its five-day run, from 15-19th May, LIGNA 2023, the world’s leading trade fair for woodworking and wood processing featured a plethora of innovations, inspiration and networking. Some 1300 companies from 50 different countries presented their solutions for the wood industry, the furniture-making industry, the woodworking trades and the primary sector.

Ligna’s back! Flagship show expands world-leading status

The focus was on the two megatrends of sustainability and digitisation. The response from Germany and all over the world was a strong 80,000 visitors from 160 countries who took advantage of the opportunity to inform themselves about smart machines and resource-saving production processes.

Anticipation during the run-up to the trade fair was high. Exhibitors and visitors were delighted to be able to come together again in person after a four-year hiatus and witness first-hand the concentrated innovative power of the woodworking and wood processing industry.

“LIGNA 2023 exceeded the high expectations of both our exhibiting companies and our visitors, demonstrating that the machinery, equipment and solutions presented at the show are paving the way for a sustainable and digitised wood, furniture and construction industry,” said Dr Jochen Köckler, Managing Board Chairman of the Deutsche Messe group of companies. “An impressive 60% of visitors came from abroad. LIGNA has further strengthened its position as the world’s leading woodworking tradeshow.

“LIGNA 2023 was not only a platform for presenting new

technologies, but also a venue for knowledge transfer and networking,” said Dr Bernhard Dirr, Managing Director of VDMA Woodworking Machinery. “The show demonstrated that the woodworking and wood processing industry offers its customers the necessary technologies for competitive, and at the same time, sustainable production. In view of the uncertain situation currently confronting the woodworking and wood processing industry, the success of LIGNA 2023 speaks volumes for its status as a source of momentum. Not only is it a driver for the industry in good times, but above all, it delivers solutions for the challenges ahead.”

As a result, smart, connected machines, systems and processes that make costs and production more efficient were particularly popular with the community. There was also strong demand for automation and process-optimising solutions to cushion the impact of the shortage of skilled workers.

“Visitors were able to experience the transformation of industry live in our exhibition halls,” Köckler continued.

The entire range of the value chain was on display, from woodworking machinery and equipment to tools and work processes, industrial robots and even exoskeletons to support experts from the skilled trades and forestry. The machines on display are often no longer exclusively limited to processing wood, but are also usable for glass, plastics and composite materials.

According to Köckler: “Furniture or even construction elements, for example, are made from a wide variety of materials. So it’s only

logical that LIGNA exhibitors are expanding their product portfolios and offering their customers a wide range of options.”

A key theme at the show consisted of the importance of wood as a renewable resource and its role in the overall decarbonisation process. In the wake of this, timber construction is becoming increasingly important and opening up new market opportunities for mechanical engineering.

Exhibitors at LIGNA 2023 presented solutions that significantly optimise all of the process steps involved in timber construction. Not only does this save on costs, but the use of this precious raw material can also be designed to be as resource-friendly as possible.

The flooring sector and the furniture industry are also increasingly turning to wood as their preferred raw material, as sustainability is becoming increasingly important to end consumers. For example, innovative adhesives based on renewable raw materials also help to reduce CO2 emissions.

As Köckler sees it: “LIGNA 2023 has once again demonstrated that it is an indispensable platform for the woodworking industry. The show not only promoted the exchange of knowledge and experience, but also set the course for future-proof and sustainable woodworking and wood processing.”

Premium tooling and application insight provides effective solutions

The history of Leitz as a manufacturer of cutting technology goes back nearly 150 years and the German tooling firm has provided outstanding quality products and powerful insight to a wide range of customers. We caught up with sales director Brian Maddox on the company’s stand at Ligna.

“As we have grown over the years it has all been about improving productivity through processes, it’s not just about great tooling. We manufacture every tool, we test every tool, we even produce our tungsten carbide and that allows us to create the carbide to suit the specific application. We also make the tools that hold our tools – the collet chucks, spacers and sleeves – and that has a massive bearing on improving those processes,” said Brian.

As a company, Leitz works with a huge range of customers, from small joinery firms to substantial, high-automated factories producing significant volumes of kitchen components and anything in between. Of course, each of these customers has specific application requirements which will need assessing and understanding to ensure each customer achieves their required solution – this is where the company’s insight, experience and expertise gained over the generations comes to the fore and is a key differential for the company.

“A key part of our service is the testing and monitoring of our tools. Testing is carried out inhouse using electron microscopes to ascertain the integrity of the tool, and burns tests are also carried out on the materials so that we can be proactive with customers, often before they know there’s a potential problem,” explains Brian.

The company is also very focused on shared intelligence from its considerable customer international insight.

“A customer in Japan came to one of my colleagues looking at saw blades where they are cutting a specific timber species – having worked through that particular situation that insight goes straight into the company’s skills bank. And at regular meetings, we have, such as trade shows like Ligna for instance, this expertise and awareness will enrich the insight that Leitz can deploy elsewhere and other customers benefit from that.

“In many ways, the company is as much about that understanding what it learns in different situations, and how that can benefit its customers throughout the world, as it does producing world-class cutting technology. Naturally, intelligence and excellent tooling combined are compelling propositions. Another way we consult for our clients’

benefit is the actual deployment of the tool in the correct manner – getting this absolutely correct and efficiently can in many cases save considerable overhead compared to tooling that’s being used incorrectly – and this is far from an uncommon issue.

This is a key differential for Leitz insofar as higher tooling cost versus an overall achieved value consideration. Our tooling with our intelligence will always outperform cheaper tooling run in a less-than-optimal scenario. It’s about quantifying and qualifying and I can pretty much guarantee that our products will provide lower running costs overall,” said Brian.

In terms of the future for Leitz, how does Brian see this developing?

“Bright – I love it because there’s so much to do! The only trouble is there’s only so much you can get out and see, and only so much messaging you can get out to the market about what Leitz stands for and what we can do for our customers. Genuinely, I think we’re the bestkept secret in the world,” concludes Brian.

In terms of how the company stacks up numbers-wise, Leitz has, as you might imagine, achieved much since its 1876: for example there are 100 Leitz service locations worldwide, they have 8000 standard products and over 150,000 satisfied customers.

In summary, a relationship with Leitz is far more than simply obtaining quality tooling, it’s more of a consultative approach to improving a client’s productivity through processes, it’s a more holistic approach and sometimes a challenge to be heard, but for Leitz and its customers, the combination of premium tooling and application of intelligent production process wins out every time.

Holz-Her at LIGNA – simplifying set-up

Welcoming over 8000 visitors to its sprawling 5000m² stand at LIGNA, Holz-Her showcased a range of new panel processing machines set to launch in the UK this summer. With a clear focus on speed, precision and simplicity, we take a closer look at the models entering the UK market …

“After a four year hiatus, Holz-Her has a lot to talk about,” begins Paul Nightingale, national sales manager at Holz-Her UK. “The stand was populated with a variety of machines suitable for large and small scale production but our continual focus has been on crunching time and deskilling production from concept to manufacture. We want our

customers to be able to run highquality, batch size one production without lengthy set-up times or complicated operating systems.”

Launched at LIGNA, the Evolution 7405 PinJet – part of the existing Evolution range of vertical CNC machine centres – features automatic drilling and dowel insertion, allowing pre-glued dowels with a diameter of 8mm and length of 30-40mm to be inserted in the +/- X direction from both sides.

“With a push of a button, the new PinJet automatically drills, cleans and applies a mist to activate the pre-glued dowel before insertion,” Paul explains. “It really is that quick and easy to operate. Plus, with its extreme machining dimensions and

compact footprint requiring less than 5m² of floor space, it offers much needed versatility for small to medium sized workshops looking to streamline production.”

Alternatively, for those incorporating nesting into their production cycle, Holz-Her’s newly-launched PowerPin drilling and dowling insertion machine –which is available in the UK this

summer – offers huge time-saving credentials.

“Operators can use the PowerPin 7605 Classic or Dynamic to drive in wooden dowels automatically, making it an ideal complement to nesting,” Paul says. “It also completely eliminates the need for manual dowel insertion after CNC machining – saving time and labour costs.

Paul continues, “Depending on the application, either pre-coated or standard wooden dowels with glue application can be processed. The large-surface support table allows multi-field loading which allows for several workpieces to be efficiently processed side by side, whilst the intuitive clamping concept ensures safe and rapid loading or unloading.

“In addition to this, the operation can be simplified further on the Dynamic thanks to the automatic adjustment of the pressure bars and material thicknesses. It also boasts VISE LED position indicators and additional horizontal drills.”

Newly-launched intelligent operating features don’t stop there. The Streamer edgbander series has grown to include the Streamer 1057 XL Power. “This

model introduces servo adjustment to the fine trim unit and the profile scrapers, bridging the gap between the existing Streamer 1057 XL and Augria 1308 XL,” says Paul.

“Its six NC servo axes allow the machining process to be selected at the touch of button, whilst the rest is set via the intelligent VISE system – a digital logbook providing all setting values for the digital counters and pressure gauges. This ensures quick, easy and safe set-up.”

The new model also comes equipped with a 15.6” touch screen display for convenient operation and diamond tools with integrated chip guidance.

Demonstrated on the LUMINA 1596, Holz-Her has also introduced the Return-Master 5940 with

stacking unit – a new module for automated edge processing suitable for volume production or single-item batches. Fully integrated into the edgebander’s control system, it enables efficient single-operator use for increased productivity and maximum flexibility and benefits from workpiece dimensions being recorded in advance and returned intelligently.

The Return-Master 5940 can also be equipped with an optional stacking device, allowing stacking directly from the return system, thus, reducing manual handling.

Paul adds, “The ongoing skills

and labour shortage has influenced Holz-Her’s latest developments greatly. The market needs machinery that offers simple and efficient machining solutions that don’t rely on a highly skilled workforce to achieve results. That’s exactly what we presented at LIGNA 2023. Comec had an impressive stand showcasing a number of

their specialist CNC machining solutions for door frames, garden products, solid wood furniture, drawer fronts and drawer boxes. Two orders were placed from UK customers during the show, the first was for an MD TOP CNC machining centre for furniture parts with the second being an MD JAMB CNC for door frames.

system is really only constrained by the physical working envelope of lengths from 175-3500mm, widths from 40-260 mm and thickness of 25-150 mm – and the tools available.”

Its capacity to run true batch size one production is also undeniable. Malcolm explains,: “As the Conturex does not rely on any jigs or fixtures, it can go from any one window component to another without downtime. This doesn’t just refer to end or length profiles. It includes all the other ancillary operations like mortice or dowel for mullions/ transoms, hinge recesses, vent slots and many more.”

As well as offering compressive machining, the Conturex’s office based programming software eradicates the need for machine programming on site, reducing the need for skilled labour. Malcolm says: “The operator is really only

responsible for making sure the correct piece of timber is loaded onto the machine and the tooling is maintained. What’s more, if the component isn’t within tolerance, it won’t be machined - leaving no space for human error. Even the basic Conturex Artis is equipped so that it can typically run for 20-30 mins without any human

intervention or, on larger models, up to three hours when equipped with an automatic loading system. From our real-world experience, it is realistic to say the machine can be used for over 90% of the working day compared to machine averages of 50-80%. This impacts hugely on production efficiency and profitability.”

Malcolm continues, “Whereas the Conturex virtually becomes an un-manned machine cell, the universal Opticut S90 cross cut saw optimises material waste and reduces cutting times – whether you’re cutting a single board, board packages or profiles from solid wood, panels or other materials. With a very extensive range of options available for the S90 it can be tailored to virtually any application that requires cross cutting.

Similarly, the newly launched Cube 3 four-sided planer was also presented with an RFC 15 return conveyor. “This year the Cube has turned 10 and to mark the occasion Weinig has launched the new Cube 3,” says Malcolm. “Now in its third

generation, the compact planer continues to be hugely popular with smaller workshop and large timber merchants alike thanks to its one-man operation and simple ‘plug and play’ concept. Since it was launched, we have easily sold nearly 250 Cube’s in the UK alone. This is because of its impressive working dimensions that allow workpieces to be planed perfectly on four sides in a single pass and its proven ability to be ten times faster than conventional machines. Ecogate Ligna debut “outstanding”

Ecogate Ltd made its inaugural appearance at May’s longawaited Ligna exhibition and, by all accounts, the sales and technical team couldn’t help but woo visitors from all sectors of the woodworking industry with the latest energy-saving technology for dust and fume extraction.

Sales director, Jake Oldfield, admitted that they were “hardpushed to cope with the level of visitor interest, which was nothing short of outstanding, but I think we did manage to speak with everyone who approached us for information and advice.”

“The Ecogate® system has been around for well over a decade now, and over that time the concept has been well received by the UK

market,” says sales manager Ian Rayner, “but electricity price hikes over the last 12 months have really hit home with manufacturers both at home and in Europe. Halving the cost of running your dust extraction system is an opportunity no factory owner wants to ignore, and the fact that the system can often pay for itself within two years, and then continue to reap savings, makes it a no-brainer.”

Here in the UK, Ecogate have a sole distribution agreement with Extractly Ltd and, with interest in the energy-saving technology burgeoning, the company is now actively seeking to establish further dealerships both here and in Europe. “The potential for take up of Ecogate technology in

the current economic climate is significant,” says Jake Oldfield, “and the levels of enthusiasm we saw at Ligna – from both manufacturers and possible sales partners – was very encouraging.”

As with so many good ideas the concept is basically very simple, and the theory behind Ecogate’s ondemand energy-saving technology

is based on age-old laws of physics, but the system’s efficiency relies more on today’s computer processing power to achieve the energy savings. Realising the reduction in fan speeds is where Ecogate’s patented technology comes to the fore – reacting automatically, in real-time, to changes in demand for extraction.

Effectively, a small reduction in extraction fan speed results in a disproportionately large reduction in the amount of electricity consumed by the fan’s motor. In fact, as a rule-of-thumb guide, reducing fan speeds by just 20% will reduce electricity consumption by 50% … which means energy bills are typically halved.

When all machine stopping and starting is monitored throughout an average working day in a joinery shop or furniture manufacturing facility, the extraction system is typically only required to operate for around 80% of the time; and it’s the 20% of ‘downtime’ that an Ecogate system capitalises on – any time a machine comes online, the dust extraction adjusts automatically to accommodate the new extraction volume requirement. Similarly, when a machine ceases operations, the fan speed is reduced and energy consumption decreases.

Traditional extraction systems operate continuously throughout the working day, with the fan motor running constantly, at full power. With Ecogate installed, fan speed is continuously varied to exactly match extraction demand and optimise energy usage.

At Ligna, this principle was demonstrated very effectively with an interactive working display which also featured Ecogate’s latest development – the new greenBOX Nxt controller. Visitors to the stand were invited to mimic the action of a machine starting up by pressing a large ‘gameshow-like’ button. This change in demand for extraction was acknowledged by the greenBOX Nxt, which in turn operated one of the display’s automatic dampers, which lit up like a Christmas tree to show it was opening! Simultaneously, an extractor fan started-up, and the ‘system’ status could then be monitored on the Nxt’s colour touchscreen. Pressing a second button opened another damper and the fan speed increased accordingly. Pressing one of the buttons again then closed a damper, the fan slowed down, and the actual power saving being made was displayed on the screen.

controller is highly intelligent. As well as controlling the extraction system, real-time performance data shows how much electricity the fan motor is consuming, it checks filter pressure, air volume and air velocity at dampers, branches, as well as across the entire system, and also monitors machine utilisation across the factory. The greenBOX Nxt is able to stop and start the extraction system automatically at both ends of the working day;

system performance is checked at start-up and confirmed by text or email, and at the end of the day, greenBOX Nxt will message again to confirm successful system shutdown.

Ecogate’s technical director, Will Kenyon, commented: “Since Ecogate was first introduced to the UK back in 2010, the concept and the potential for energy savings have been appreciated across the industry, and many manufacturers

have implemented the technology into their factories over those years. For some, however, it was possibly just one more capital investment that had to go on the back burner but now, with the economics of the system making more sense than ever before, this is an investment that could ensure a future for some businesses.”

SCM’s new entries attract considerable interest at Ligna 2023

SCM recorded outstanding success at the 2023 edition of the Ligna trade fair. Thousands of customers and business visitors from more than 100 countries crowded into the group’s stand, which covered more than 3,000m2 of exhibition space and more than 50 technological solutions between Hall 13 and Hall 16 (the latter being Superfici’s technologies for finishing).

There was an excellent return in terms of orders, negotiations and contacts on a vast range of product types and important opportunities arose in all the international markets, especially the DACH area, North and Eastern Europe, North

and South America and South-East Asia, reports SCM.

The company presented innovations in all the application fields for secondary word processing, both physically at the trade fair as well as digitally and interactively. As well as the extensive demo programme organised at the SCM Live Show, at the heart of the stand, there was no lack of contributions to Ligna.Recruiting and Ligna.Stage on the new trends for digital transformation and automation, timber construction and surface treatment.

Some of the new entries that elicited the greatest interest

included automated and connected solutions developed for highly bespoke, versatile and sustainable production.

The Smart&Human Factory system for the furniture industry presented new flexible cells with robots and integrated with unmanned AMR shuttles: gabbiani gt2 for beam saw, stefani cell E for edgebanding, morbidelli cx220 for

drilling, as well as a new cut c 200 right-size-box-making machine for cardboard packaging.

Also presented for the first time was a Smart&Human Factory model for joineries, an integrated cell for flexible and bespoke production from raw material to the finished piece of furniture, enhanced by its integration with an MES software.

There was also considerable interest in the latest integrated offer on software and services presented at the Digital Hub, supporting each stage of the process from planning and programming to after-sales assistance. These included the new functions on the Maestro CNC nest cutting optimiser, the Maestro optiwise optimiser for singleblade and angular panel saws, the Maestro power TMS optimiser to manage the tools inside the tool storages on the CNC machining centres and Maestro 3drill for drilling.

Some of the new HMI software presented includes Maestro active square for profiling, squaring and tenoning machines and Maestro active beam & saw for CNC machining centres for timber construction.

Also attracting attention was the platform for Maestro connect digital services integrated into the “Woodworking made Izy” and the new Service Bundles – SCM service packages created to offer an integrated solution that helps the customer with any requirements.

Some of the most popular machines included the new entries for timber construction and prefabricated houses, especially oikos xs – a CNC machining centre offering operating speed and high configuration levels,

dedicated to the production of straight beams, prefabricated walls, trusses, roofs and blockhouses. This new entry further extends SCM’s range of high-tech solutions for the sector, together with dmc system xl to sand and calibrate X-lam/CLT panels and the other new entries on show at the Randek stand –an SCM partner specialising in advanced machining systems for prefabricated houses.

Also on show were SCM Surface Technologies products for integrated surface treatment, starting with the new dmc system tc automatic sanding-calibrating machine with laser unit and never-ending power sources. This was developed to create threedimensional marking on parquet, wood elements, MDF panels to be ennobled, fibre cement panels and solid surfaces.

These solutions can satisfy any processing demand for exclusive, sophisticated, fashionable finishing effects, as well as the Superfici new entries on display in Hall 16. They include the new compact xl sprayer, the uv led polymerisation system and the excimatt excimer technology for super matt finishing effects.

The CNC machining centres for panels and solid wood presented include morbidelli m100 with new

FlexDrive worktable; morbidelli x200 with new in-cab labeller for nesting machining, and accord 500 to manufacture doors, windows, stairs and solid wood elements. The new olimpic 500 was presented for edgebanding to be used by artisan businesses looking for all the advantages of an edgebander in a compact space. Some of the new entries presented digitally include the stefani sbx squaring-edgebanding machine for accurate squaring and top-quality machining, and windorflex, a new automatic cell to produce complete windows and doors.

Lastly, there was an extensive offer for artisan joinery within which the new “Blade Off” safety system and the new starteck cn k three-axis compact were highlighted.

The success of the five-day event was the crowning moment to an exceptional year for SCM and the entire Italian Group, with a record 850 million Euro turnover for the year ending 2022, with orders of around 900 million Euro. The SCM Wood Division surpassed 600 million, again recording doublefigure growth on the previous year and continues to gain global market shares in the woodworking industry.

Lamello launches the Clamex S-20

Those looking to create precise and near-invisible furniture joints quickly and easily into material as thin as 8mm should take note of Lamello’s brand new Clamex S-20.

Launched at Interzum and Ligna 2023, the Clamex S-20 is a detachable furniture connector that is based on the universally known 4mm installation principle. With its thin design and strong joining force, the connector opens up completely new dimensions in wood joining technology.

“Like every Clamex connector from Lamello, the Clamex S-20 is detachable and is connected to the counterpart with a rotating lever that can be opened time and again,” says Shaye Chatfield, Lamello UK’s sales manager. “Using a biscuit jointer, the connector halves are anchored into the groove with two screws to ensure a strong hold, whilst the small 6mm access opening for closing and opening the connector offers a discreet finish on corner, surface or frame connections.

Shaye continues, “Whilst the existing Clamex S-18 connector needs an 8mm cut to insert the fitting, the new Clamex S-20 has been designed to work with a universal 4mm cut – making it even more versatile and quicker to use. Mitre joints are now possible on materials as thin as 14mm thick and butt joints with installation into the edges can measure as little as 8mm thick.

“The Clamex S-20 can also be used for angle connections from 30º180º and, to make life even simpler, the system comes with its own drilling jig for precise positioning.

“What’s more, the Clamex S-20 isn’t limited for use on a specific biscuit jointer. Instead, it can be used on any biscuit jointing machine with a 4mm blade, not just Lamello’s Classic X or Top 21. This makes it an affordable and flexible option for those working on site without an existing Lamello jointer, or hobbyists and DIY enthusiasts that are yet to invest in Lamello’s P-System but still want a strong and accurate solution to creating

connections at all angles without the need for adhesives.”

Typical furniture applications include wardrobes installed into sloping roofs, cabinets, roof linings, thin surface connections and shelves. Plus, furniture joints for corner, surface and frame connections.

Smaller workshops looking for a centralised dust extraction system that offers high vacuum dust extraction on up to 12 handheld machines should take note of ALKO’s new Clean Vac.

Launched at LIGNA 2023 and available exclusively in the UK from TM Machinery, the new AL-KO Clean Vac has been designed with the smaller workshop in mind. Available with a 8.5kw or 12.5kw motor and featuring effective pressurised filter cleaning, the system offers much needed flexibility and performance combined.

Connected to a centralised ducting system, the new dust extraction system can be connected to up to 12 handheld machines thanks to its high suction power of up to 25,000 Pa. This not only eradicates the need for individual vacuum cleaners to

be connected to each handheld machine but also reduces ongoing maintenance and repair costs on multiple machines and ensures clean air in the workplace.

Its adaptable design also means it can work effectively with smaller woodworking machines like spindle moulders and compact edgebanders, too.

Operation and maintenance of the system couldn’t be simpler either. Controlled by a simple wall-mounted control panel, the workings of the unit are controlled automatically. The operator simply needs to empty a singular dust collection bin attached to the unit. As an optional extra, it even reminds you if it hasn’t been emptied and shuts down completely if it reaches its maximum capacity to avoid any damage to the system.

The AL-KO Clean Vac is also ideally suited to smaller spaces. Measuring 1956 x 1038 x 2430mm, it is designed to be installed inside or out, freeing up floorspace where it’s needed most.

“Smaller manufacturing companies often find themselves having to balance performance

and space but with the new AL-KO Clean Vac, you no longer need to,” says Matthias Schalast, area sales manager for AL-KO Extraction Technology.

“Specifically designed for the extraction of handheld machines – which require a significantly higher vacuum than standard woodworking machines – users can incorporate a highly efficient dust extraction system into their workshop that requires very little space and ensures a healthy workplace environment. How is Ligna going for you, how are you finding the experience?

A perfect show for us, we have a very strong demand for the products we are presenting. We have a relatively small booth, we’re a bit hidden here and people are finding their way. We are two guys on the booth at all times and we always have people waiting to speak with us.

What sets Accoya apart from its peers?

We call it ‘changing wood to change the world!’ So our USP is really about changing life cycles, today sustainability is one of the

biggest topics we have. In the building industry, some 40% of the carbon footprint comes form this sector, and what we do is extend the life cycle of the (wood) product – this product (Accoya) is used in every application outdoors. As the demand for wooden products, sustainable products and renewable products grow, Accoya is well placed to develop in many markets

What’s the future looking like for Accoya in the UK?

For us it’s a really big market, we have over 200 manufacturers work with Accoya in the UK and we’ve set up an approved manufacturers programme to help them in sales and marketing support – to spread the word of the Accoya products.

Traditionally the UK market is strong in windows and doors, but we feel there is considerable demand for other exterior applications such as cladding. An example of this being the new Google HQ at King’s Cross London, where Accoya was a specified material for the facade and other uses which demonstrated the qualities of our product, where and how it can be used.

Innovations-wise, what is the future looking like for Accoya?

Hoffmann Machine Company report a truly positive return to Ligna

There were various machines on show at the event, ranging from the smaller bench top X-line 20 and MU-3, up to the free-standing MS35-SF and PP2-NC. Also unveiled at the show was the new MU-S, designed specifically for easy transport, use on site, and in limited space.

‘’Initially we weren’t sure what to expect prior to attending the show this year, but what you could really feel was that people were genuinely happy and excited to be visiting exhibitions again,” comments MD,

Thomas Hoffmann. “It actually turned out to be very busy.

“The beginning of the week was mainly international customers who had also visited the exhibition ‘Interzum’ in Cologne the week before. They were real quality buyers and decision makers, not only ‘tourists’.

“We had a busy stand from opening at 9am right through till closing at 6pm. We could not only meet end users and existing customers but also dealers, importers and especially our partners from Europe, the United States and more. This is very important to us because it’s very rare to be able to meet our partners face to face.’’

A wide range of machines were sold over the course of the show, from the smallest and newest MUS, right up to the MS35 SF double mitre saw. Many major Door-Set manufacturers were particularly interested in the Hoffmann MS35 SF to produce ‘Vision Panel Cassettes’ and also ‘Architrave Sets’. The MS35 SF simplifies a time-consuming-process and produces accurate joints in an essential area of door-set manufacture.”

All in all, it was a very satisfying show, and a very positive return after such a long pause.

Centred around strategically placed gateways that track every item that enters the production cycle, parts can be tracked from the moment they enter the factory to the moment they leave – offering manufacturers real-time access to their complete production line, its performance and the exact status of each part in the factory from their computer, laptop or mobile device.

“Compatible with all machinery makes and models and easily retrofitted onto existing production lines, our RFID software tracks every part automatically – leaving no room for human error,” says Martina Schwarz, CEO of CAD+T.

“In the past, barcodes were a go-to option when looking to track production parts but they still leave room for error. After all, if an operator scans 15 pieces but there are 16 that need to be machined, you will still only have 15 pieces on your system. This won’t happen when using our RFID software because it isn’t reliant on manual

intervention. Instead, it uses antennas that are situated around the workshop to scan RFID tags or labels placed on each piece. Each time a part passes an antenna, its position is logged, allowing it to be tracked through the production cycle and other areas of the business. This takes away any human error or the possibility of lost items.”

It also offers a greater insight into the production’s efficiencies and can foresee production problems. Martina explains, “Every aspect of the operation can be measured – from machinery running times to material usage. The software gives you a live look into your company’s workflow – offering simple, measurable solutions to improve efficiencies. We also install quality control stations throughout the production line to guarantee no pieces fall below par. Inspections can either be completed manually or measured mechanically before being accepted or rejected and a replacement requested.

Furniture & Joinery Production spoke with Lee Darby, Nordfab UK Regional Sales Manager about the company’s current position in the very competitive ducting arena, and also what news and ideas he could offer for customers looking to invest in an extraction system.

What’s the company’s position is in the market and what the outlook is moving forward?

Over the last 18 months, Nordfab as a company in the UK has gone from strength to strength. We’ve enjoyed solid growth of 58% from 2021 to 2022. A key part of that was a substantial kitchen manufacturer project which – but discounting that, we were very close to the previous year’s performance for base business, so we feel we’ve got a little bit more market share.

We are a relatively young company and we are developing at a healthy and sustainable pace at the moment. Whilst not being complacent, we’ve got a good number of projects coming up so we are not seeing any decline or any issues with Brexit at the moment. So yeah, everything’s really positive at the minute.

What supports that market confidence?

One of our company’s mantras is that we should be ‘fast, friendly and reliable’ – I have been in sales for over 10 years and I think you learn a lot in that time. So it’s about listening to customers’ needs, reacting and being proactive, innovative,

and thinking of new ideas – we’re always thinking of ways to make profitable ideas and concepts for Nordfab’s customers.

In my opinion, building up relationships is done more by actions than words, so we implement what we’re telling customers and when we say we’re going to deliver this, we follow through. But sales tools are a big part of that as well and in that regard, Nordfab is well-resourced. For instance, we have online quoting tools where customers can generate their own quotation, and because that doesn’t impact our internal resources as much, we can keep our operating costs lower than they might otherwise be, and our customers will benefit from that.

What does Nordfab’s online quoting tools mean for customers?

We typically deal with people who know what they’re doing in terms of understanding what they are looking for, and how they want it to work – usually, they’ve got hands-on experience. A lot of the larger suppliers want to deal with a manufacturer direct so we can speed the process quite a bit using this system. We’re certainly finding that these online quoting tools have helped us free up some time and create additional efficiencies.

We have recently introduced a new 3D design tool called the Quick Fit Visual Design Tool. This is available now for all of our buying customers in the UK and in the EU.

In simple terms, a customer makes a drawing and takes a PNG image file to it and uploads it to the webpage. Then customers select the flow speed, and then you can start to build the entire system.

You just draw the lines using a mouse and then press the 3D button, and you see it your drawing visualised in 3D in one minute. Then everything is calculated – entire bondings, air pressure losses, clamps, hangers and that’s all directly fed into our system to create a bill of materials before an order. It’s an amazing advantage for our customers to conceive, visualise and create a 3D plan for their ducting, saving time in the process.

You don’t have to have any AutoCAD experience, it creates pressure drops in the system, and it then gives you a bill of materials that feeds the information to our online quoting tool. So within 10-15 minutes customers can have a fully-detailed ducting quote in 3D. The Quick Fit Visual Design Tool is a game-changer and it’s available for all of our buying customers in the UK and in the EU.

Master of materials returns to Ligna

Biesse returned to Ligna this year with a new look that expresses the company’s evolutionary journey.

“At Ligna we share how our work can unleash the potential of any material through an immersive installation that showcases creativity and technology,” says Raphaël Prati, chief marketing & communications officer. “Our customers create products that are increasingly multi-material and Biesse provides access to a vast range of skills through a single company and a single brand.”

The installation used physical and video elements to stimulate the visitor’s imagination and present multi-materiality. The itinerary ended with a display featuring four finished products made from the different materials to showcase the theme chosen for this installation at Ligna 2023, the seat.

“We wanted to prime visitors to envision their own factory of tomorrow. Arminius delighted with visitor reaction to their quality products

What are you trying to achieve during your time at Ligna?

Firstly we’re really surprised what’s happened this week because the last show was four years ago of course, and then along comes the Corona virus and nobody knows really what might happen to this show – I have to say we are really excited and pleased with how the first day went. From early on in the day we were meeting old customers of course, but what came as a bit of a surprise was that we were also attracting with new companies in good numbers. So it was a really good start.

What sets you apart from your competitors?

For industries and companies large and small, we have tools fit for purpose – different tools for a wide range of applications. The difference is our tools, our very high quality tools, and some of them are unique to us. Arminius is about quality. We have a full range of standard sanding tools of course, but we have many that I would say are not available elsewhere to the

standard we produce. Yes, quality and this kind of structure, the kind of profile, I mean there are other ones, they have straight profiles, but not profiles like ours. It should be pointed out that it’s really difficult to create this quality – but that is exactly what our customers need.

One area where we have invested recently which differentiates us from the standard sanding tool offer is our Eco Flex range, which is easy to spot with its rich green colour. The Eco Flex sanding disc set consists of two Eco Flex TB25 bases and individually selectable Eco Flex B20 spacers – together they form the basic body. This is supplemented by the abrasive applied to the black carrier, which is adapted to the contour of your work piece. This is easy to change thanks to a plug-in system – both the profile and the grain. The profiled sanding elements coated with abrasives, which can also be ordered in different common grain sizes according to customer requirements, complete the set. The Eco Flex TB25 base, like each individual Eco Flex B20 spacer, is made from sustainable, bio-compatible raw materials.

What does the future looking like for Arminius?

Our company has a subsidiary located in the United States, through which we deliver almost half of our production to customers in the US and to Canada. While this allows us to expand our market reach, we acknowledge the potential negative impact on our carbon footprint due to increased transportation. Although delivering to Europe and Germany is relatively easy for us, delivering to the US and Canada presents a unique challenge. Nonetheless, we remain optimistic about potential clients from the East.

Sometimes we have really big orders, and big orders are of course good for our production but sometimes it is also good if you have lot of small customer orders then we have a wider base. The customers or people don’t know exactly our product and all the reasons because we go in trade magazines and we see it at every show. The people come and say, oh, we don’t know this or that happened yet …

What has been the customer reaction to the Eco Flex range?

People are surprised about our product – firstly, we make everything normally by hand and they are surprised and say 'great, that’s our future too', and that is our main idea. Our customers understand and share our values in that regard. In terms of performance it speaks for itself, and additionally there is a weight saving of course, and this matters especially in shipping costs and the safe delivery of the products. We take orders for the Eco Flex system online via our new web page all the time – www.

tools4everybody.de – there customers can upload measured drawings specific to individual orders. It’s clear and easy to order. We think it’s a great idea and our customers agree.

When it comes to the UK market for Arminius, what would you like to see moving forwards? In the past the UK has been a more successful market for Arminius, primarily because we had a dealer in UK, but this is approaching retirement so we have work to do there. And then Brexit happened. Nobody knows, really what’s happened in UK, what’s happened with the Europe-UK relationship and so on.

We have good news though in that we now another dealer for the UK market – the East Midland Saw & Tool Company (EMST), based in Rutland Mill, Chapel St, Long Eaton. We currently have two or three direct customers in the UK and we are optimistic that the market will continue to grow for us, but we understand that it will take time. The UK is considered a part of Europe to us, and if we ship anything there, we handle any challenges that arise with customs and so on.

We are confident that with the help of our new dealer, we will further develop the UK market for Arminius Tooling.

LIGNA 2023 helps to highlight the opportunities that lie ahead and identify possible solutions. After all, if the Green Deal means the wood industry has to make its practices and processes more environmentally friendly in order to meet climate targets, it will also benefit from rising demand for wood-based products, which are seen as a sustainable alternative to conventional materials. In addition, the Green Deal opens up funding opportunities for companies that develop and adopt environmentally friendly processes and technologies.

Increased use of sustainably sourced wood resources

Not only building materials and furniture, but more and more products from all areas of life can be made from sustainably sourced wood resources. Here, the potential that lies in the production of biochemicals from wood plays a decisive role.

By using enzymes and microorganisms, valuable chemical raw materials can be obtained from wood components such as cellulose and lignin for the production of bioplastics, textile fibers and other biobased products. Last but not least, the use of wood waste and residues as raw materials for the production of bioenergy is also an important area of the wood processing industry

All players in the woodworking and wood processing industry are needed

According to a recent publication on the wood-based bioeconomy by acatech (German Academy of Science and Engineering), the "almost inexhaustible pool of tasks to be solved" described by Zscheile includes not only securing the primary raw material base in the long term by rewarding sustainable forest management and the economical and efficient use of wood, as well as strengthening the circular economy and cascade use, but also strengthening the acceptance of material-based, innovative wood-based applications, innovative wood-based applications, the provision of transparent information, the optimisation of funding requirements, the establishment of material, innovative wood-based applications, the coherent further development of legal framework conditions and, last but not least, the generation of viable bioeconomic business models that challenge common consumption patterns. So basically all the key players in the woodworking and processing industry face the challenge of bringing about nothing less than a paradigm shift.

Siempelkamp, specialising in the production of factories for the wood-based materials industry, for example, presented recycling solutions for reuse in order to be able to process wood waste efficiently and sustainably into new wood products. Jowat, a leading manufacturer of

adhesives with products based on sustainable raw materials such as vegetable oils. These adhesives also help to strengthen the circular economy, as they are made from renewable resources and have a lower environmental impact when disposed of than conventional adhesives.

Growing awareness of sustainable wood use

The woodworking and wood processing industry is thus offering solutions on a broad front to the challenges described, for example, by the University of Kassel last summer in a study published jointly with the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) entitled "Everything from wood - raw material of the future or coming crisisapproaches to a balanced bioeconomy": At 4.3 to five billion m3 per year, the study said, global consumption of wood is currently significantly higher than the three billion cubic meters m3 that can truly be sustainably harvested from forests. The conclusion is that the use of wood urgently needs to be steered in a new direction. And indeed, much is currently changing for the better: the use of green technologies and processes in the woodworking industry aimed at reducing the use of chemicals and waste is steadily increasing, digitalisation and automation are further boosting efficiency and productivity, and new process technologies are being developed that allow wood to be used in new applications, especially in the construction industry, but also in the transportation sector, and of course awareness of the sustainable use of wood and other natural resources continues to grow.

LIGNA 2023 made an important contribution to this with its focus theme "Green Material Processing" and put its global reach at the service of sustainable positive change.

New research points to a rise in home improvement plans

Almost half of UK homeowners (45%) are planning home improvements within the next two years according to new research. One in 10 respondents said the cost and difficulty of buying and selling will see them actively put off plans to move in favour of home improvements and over a third (36%) of all respondents aren’t considering a move but have plans to upgrade their home.

Interior decorating (29%), a new kitchen (23%) and bathroom renovations (21.4%) were the top choices for those planning home improvement works, with new flooring (21%) and new doors (15%) also making the top five. Other planned home improvements include external works like roofing, gutters and external paintwork (14%), new windows (13%), adding or upgrading a downstairs toilet (10%), fitting a new boiler (10%) or new lighting (9%).

The initial findings released as part of the Functional Spaces: Homes for Living research by Häfele UK suggest that despite a challenging start to the year for many business in the home improvements sector, factors such as a reduction in energy pricing may be allowing homeowners to invest in their homes once again.

“During Covid lockdowns, there was a huge spike in home improvement projects of all scales and sizes, but more recent economic circumstances have put many plans on hold,”

says Natalie Davenport, head of marketing at Häfele UK. “In our survey of 2,000 UK homeowners, however, there are indications that half of households plan to spend on their current property in the coming years.

“The kitchen is a particular area that homeowners are looking to improve, especially as our research found that one in ten people do not like their current kitchen.”

This 2023 Functional Spaces: Homes for Living research builds on a similar study conducted in 2022 by the manufacturer and distributor of furniture fittings, accessories, hardware and ironmongery, that explored the impact of kitchen design on wellbeing and mental health.

This year’s survey uncovered that 81% of homeowners feel they would have an improved quality of life if the biggest issues in their kitchen were resolved – a stark increase of 16% versus the company’s 2022 findings.

Delving into what homeowners most dislike about their kitchen, not enough storage was the most common factor, chosen by 28% of those surveyed. Size was an issue for a quarter of respondents who selected ‘too small’ as their biggest issue. Cluttered worktops (19%), damaged and tired kitchen cabinets (17%) and inaccessible cupboards and shelving (15%) were also frequent problems.

A quarter of consumers selected a style

overhaul as the motivator for why they would update or have updated their kitchen. Quality improvements (23%) and lack of storage (19%) were second and third on the list.

Given the cost-of-living crisis and a spike in conversation around rising prices, it’s perhaps unsurprising that budget and the overall cost was the most important factor for those who’ve recently bought or updated their kitchen (34%) and almost half of those who said they need to upgrade their kitchen are worried about the cost to do so. This figure has increased by 6% since Häfele’s 2022 study.

Examining the priorities for those planning a future kitchen upgrade, the top four comprise quality and how long it will last (19%); budget and overall cost (18%); function and usability (14%); and style and how it looks (11%). Almost a quarter of respondents (24%) said they would shop around to get the best functionality for their budget – up 3% versus 2022.

“Our upcoming report sharing more of the findings will outline a multitude of insights that will help those involved in all aspects of home design to create better spaces for the consumer, as well as understand their new priorities and drivers when it comes to purchasing and decision making,” concludes Natalie.

The development specialists minimised the space required to house the technology, enabling GRASS customers to make full use of the scope for creative styling. Even the tilt angle adjustment was optimised so that it could be accommodated in a drawer side height of exactly 41mm.

Global innovations: high box-type drawer and full-glass version Crystal Plus

The multifaceted Scala range includes drawer solutions with heights of 63, 90 and 122mm as well as a snugly fitting railing version and a new, striking drawer with a height of 186mm.

In 2017, GRASS introduced another box-type drawer version. “With an incredible height of 250mm, the new high drawer is unique in the world of double-wall systems,” says Thomas Müller. “When we developed the unit, we primarily had the design-conscious Italian market in mind. There, glass is not as important as in other markets, but high box-type drawers play a much bigger role.” In other markets, the large-surface glass version of the modular Scala family, Crystal Plus, is very popular.

“Maximising the clear view into the drawers is a very elegant solution,” adds product designer, Stefan Ambrozus, who was involved in the development process. Whether fitted with glass or any other of the available design elements, the frame-sided drawer is a unique design statement.

Extremely simple handling and installation

During the development of Nova Pro Scala, special attention was paid to simple processes in drawer production. The cabinet dimensions and drilled holes of the standardised Nova Pro technology remain the same. Pre-fitted attachment posts for the glass panels on the Nova Pro Crystal Plus make work even easier. This solution does not require any gluing, drilling or tensioning of the add-on elements.

In addition, Nova Pro Crystal Plus features an innovative clip technology; the design elements can be fitted securely and without tools, just as easily as changing a battery.

The modular front connection on the drawers guarantees maximum stability with minimum part complexity. Therefore, the drawers and fronts can easily be replaced.

Nova Pro now child-proof

The basic Nova Pro has been extended by some practical functionalities. With a new longitudinal division for railing pull-outs, it is possible to adapt the drawer system to the individual

requirements of users. The longitudinal divider for the cross-railing helps with organising –just like Tavinea Sorto, the new inside dividing system for drawers.

The very simply designed system consists of two frames and a cross member, and is available for Nova Pro in a range of versions.

The Nova Pro child lock keeps children safe, preventing them from accessing the contents of the drawer. The system is fitted concealed and can also be retrofitted as an option.

In addition to these new developments, the Nova Pro steel back panel can now also be simply installed by using a separate clip, without any additional assembly aids. A sink splashback holder makes it possible to produce drawers with a cut-out for the waste trap quickly and straightforwardly.

Systematic differentiation

With this smart overall package, GRASS has succeeded in “meeting the requirements of our customers from A to Z,” says Thomas Müller. Edgebanding with PUR, Micro Emissions & EVA cartridge adhesives

Operators using PUR Hot melts will need to be informed and trained, or may switch to Micro Emissions (ME) PUR. Where high moisture or heat resistance is not required, for example in bedroom furniture, EVA

adhesives are the ideal choice for companies. The Technomelt Dorus HKP range has an exceptional offering with Technomelt Dorus HKP 20 and Technomelt Dorus HKP 25. Between these two all the bases are covered, helping achieve the production line finishes that are expected in today’s competitive markets. Technomelt Dorus HKP 20 is an unfilled, transparent, EVA edgebanding hotmelt for Holz-Her equipment. Allowing for thinner coat weights and high glue mileage, it is a premium EVA grade.

Technomelt Dorus HKP 25, meanwhile, is a filled EVA edgebanding hotmelt for Holz-Her equipment, available in a range of colours (natural, white, brown and black), so no matter what edging colour is selected, you can be assured that the adhesive options available will have it covered.

Another product of note is the Technomelt Cleaner 2 – a blue cleaning agent for all

polyurethane (PUR) hotmelts in an uncured state.

Holz-Her edgebanders are not just limited to cartridge adhesives. With clever additions such as the hopper system, which can be attached to the machines, it allows for the use of both EVA and PUR granules. This innovative addition provides companies access to other highperformance grades from the range, such as Technomelt Dorus KS 351 unfilled edgebanding or Technomelt PUR 270/7 G (granules), both of which are recognised for their clean running and outstanding gluing performance. PUR adhesives and good house keeping

When it comes to cleaning, as with any PUR adhesive, a wax-based cleaner such as Technomelt Cleaner 2) is required to prevent the adhesive from cross-linking and curing within the machine. With the larger 2kg blocks, normally one or two cleaning slugs will have to be purged through the system, to clean it down of any remaining PUR within it.

Henkel’s PUR granules offer the ability to gauge the adhesive level within the glue pot throughout the day and run it down towards the end of the shift, meaning there is very little PUR adhesive left in the glue pot prior to cleaning. Use the recommended cleaner for Henkel PUR granules (Technomelt Cleaner 4) which is supplied in a blue granule form, and can be put directly into the glue pot. Normally half to a full cup will be sufficient. This reduces cleaning times and allows for a quick start up the following morning.

Business Sentiment Index – cautious return to confidence for Woodworking SMEs

Close Brothers Asset Finance’s Business Sentiment Index (BSI), which measures SME business confidence, has risen for the first time since September 2021 following three consecutive falls, and a low at the end of 2022. These were caused, in the main, by rising inflation, energy cost increases and higher interest rates.

Despite the headwinds still being faced by small and medium-sized firms and inflation stubbornly remaining in double digits, wholesale energy prices have fallen from their summer 2022 peaks, and there appears to be more

certainty about where interest rates rises are headed, all of which is helping firms plan with more assurance.

This change in confidence is better understood when looking more closely at Woodworking businesses’ priorities, which are managing costs (29%; UK: 26%) and achieving growth (22%; UK: 28%) well ahead of issues like paying down debts (10%; UK: 9%) and business consolidation (9%; UK: 9%).

Appetite for investment

Overall, the appetite to invest remains strong, as it was at the end of 2022, with 83% (UK: 75%) of Woodworking firms looking to seek funding for investment in the next 12 months.

Missed opportunities

The number of Woodworking companies that have missed business opportunities because of a lack of available funding stands at 47% (UK: 45%) in May 2023.

While this is an improvement, these are historically ‘high’ figures – for example, in May 2022, 37% of UK respondents answered ‘yes’ to the question ‘have you missed a business

opportunity in the last 12 months, due to lack of available finance?’.

It would appear businesses are concerned about impacting their cashflow by dipping into their reserves or taking out a standard loan and adding to their debt burden.

Economic outlook

Woodworking businesses are more positive than negative about the macro-economic outlook, ‘outperforming’ the consolidated UK sentiment. Compared to the end of 2022, firms in the sector are considerably more optimistic than they were. This indicator has contributed most to the decline in the overall BSI; for example, in November 2021 75% of respondents were positive about the economy – by December 2022 this had fallen to just 38%.

Predicted business performance

Predictions about future business performance remained stable, with the majority expecting their prospects to remain unchanged. Overall, fewer firms predict they will contract than earlier in the year (7% against 11%).
