It’s the VIBE of the thing
— by Krysten Davis —Letter from Nicole
— Editor —
Love is in the air. Or is it?
For me, it’s been chaos in the air for 2023, as January blurs into February at record speed, and I’m still chasing my tail from the year before.
There’s been books and uniforms to organise, first days of secondary school to prepare for, getting back into work, and catching up on all of that washing from the family holidays.
That said, February is the month of love, and here at Get it, we’re focused on celebrating ALL types of love.
Like self-love – arguably the most important love of all. After all, if you don’t love yourself, how can you love anyone else.
Something I’ve learnt as a working mum with five kids to wrangle, is that burning the candle at both ends doesn’t serve anyone. It certainly doesn’t serve the ones you love.
Taking a bit of time to love yourself, can make all the difference to how well you love others. With nothing in the tank, you’re likely to become a frazzled, anxious, screaming banshee, with smudged eyeliner and a two-day old mum-bun... or maybe that’s just me.
So, this Valentine’s month, before you love your partner, your kids, your friends, or your dog – love yourself first.
Grab a glass of bubbles and our latest mag, and enjoy!
Nicole Madigan

My daughter has been watching the UK version of ‘Love Island’.
For those not familiar it’s a show where you put 5 boys and 5 girls into a stunning villa somewhere beautiful and tropical. The girls pretty much wear nothing but skimpy bikinis and the boys spend their time flexing shirtless. They are on the island to find love and they do this by drinking copiously, snogging endlessly and talking ad nauseum about who they are ‘vibing’ with and who is ‘ticking all the boxes’.
The contestants ‘couple up’ and then periodically the whole place is shaken up by the introduction of new (even hotter) people to test the ‘commitment’ of the couples.
It is very entertaining in a cringe, cover your eyes, romantic train wreck kind of way. The contestants sincerely and earnestly discuss their desire for a life partner and that what they are interested in is the ‘inner person’ and their need to form a ‘connection’.
It’s truly an AMAZING coincidence that the vibe/ connection/box ticking always seems to form the best with the hottest person they can find. It makes me sound old but I think that most of my friends would prefer ‘love yourself island’: a place of books, wine, massages, yoga, good friends and no boys. There would be plenty of ‘vibing’ and ‘connecting’ and absolutely no snogging. Who wants a boy anyway. I think that’s what the people on the show don’t understand. Love, connection and commitment are incredible and they absolutely can stand the test of time. But you need to bring your most capable, loving, selfless, caring mature self to the table. When you need a shoulder to cry on, you need to feel held, safe and understood, not sliding off the oiled up muscular pec of a selfish man-boy.
I know that ‘reality tv’ is not reality and that people are cast for their cup size not their compassion. True connection comes from shared experience, shared values and a commitment to working through slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. Love, sex and marriage are all made better by respect and patience. So, this Valentine’s Day, put on your skimpiest bikini, cover yourself in coconut oil, drink five strawberry daiquiris and find the hottest boy you can to snog. Or…appreciate the people who love you for you. Actually, maybe do both.

It’s time to change your ordinary to extraordinary
— by Dee Hardy — Shifting Tides CounsellingThe commencement of another year, the completion of the last – hopes and possibilities and a chance to do things differently.
While there are some life experiences that need to be left behind (or accepted), we can also embrace all that is just part of our ‘ordinary lives, and choose to experience them in an extraordinary’ way.
I spent my holiday break with my dearest and longest standing girlfriend who invited me to her beach house. As we arrived, we hugged and giggled like a couple of schoolgirls and before getting ourselves settled in.
So here is what we did for 2 weeks:
• each morning, we were greeted with an amazing sunrise, creeping across an ever-changing horizon with the ocean showcasing its magic and strength each day, welcoming in a new day
• puppy toileting duties (yes, they do have routines!)
• whilst still in our respective PJ’s, my girlfriend made me an excellent espresso, normally followed by a fresh juice
• plans for the morning were discussed...which usually entailed a walk on the beach with the puppies, with a brief chat about lunch and dinner plans
• the days themselves were reasonably similar, walks, naps, something to eat and some reading
• we mixed up our dinners - most were at home on the terrace
It was the best holiday I have had in years.
So what made it so special?
If you consider what I did on my vacation, you could say it was uneventful’, as we didn’t do anything ‘extraordinary’. But I was with a friend where I could just be myself and we celebrated being in the moment, enjoying simple things without expectation. We did all those things that we do in our normal lives but were present, being mindful and giving ourselves permission in our everyday ‘ordinary’ life, in an extraordinary’ way.
Injecting your way to a better smile
Record numbers of Aussies turning to injectables to
Turns out COVID-19 impacted people in more ways than first thought – in fact, the pandemic even had an impact on our collective teeth.
According to Dr Vivek Eranki, CEO of award winning national Cosmetique clinics, Aussies are now turning to injectables to save their teeth.
“Dentists are experiencing an increase in the number of people cracking and damaging their teeth due to clenching and grinding in their sleep. This condition is known as bruxism,” Dr Eranki said.
“Many people are putting the issue down to stress and the challenges they are facing due to the pandemic.
“The problem with bruxism - clenching and grinding, is that it can actually crack and break teeth to the point where they need to be extracted. A lot of people are having to have teeth pulled because of the damage and infection caused.
“Aside from wearing a mouth guard at night to stop the clenching, injectables are becoming one of the most popular ways to help people to save their teeth.”
Dr Eranki said enquiries for injectables to treat bruxism have soared over the last 12 to 24 months.
“A muscle relaxant injectable is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to treat bruxism. Cosmetique has seen a significant increase in the number of patients wanting this type of treatment for bruxism since the beginning of the pandemic,” Dr Eranki said.
How is a muscle relaxant used to treat bruxism?
“The treatment for bruxism can be undertaken in your lunch hour. It is a quick and easy treatment,” Dr Eranki said. “We simply inject into the chewing muscles. These muscles are strong and can grind with up to 250 pounds of force. The treatment does not affect eating or facial expressions, it simply relaxes the chewing muscles so you don’t grind your teeth at night.”
How long does it take to work?
“Within a week, patients start to experience the relaxation of muscles and headaches and jaw pain start to disappear,” Dr Eranki said.
How long does the treatment last?
“Usually one treatment lasts for up to three months,” Dr Eranki said. “Most patients have a few treatments throughout the year and find that it helps immensely. Many patients cannot believe the relief. It is certainly a better option for many people than having to wear an uncomfortable mouth guard every night.”
The joy of colour
Weaving joy, colour and fun into every print, Ellie Whittaker is pioneering a new generation of design with her namesake textile brand. We chat to the artist, mum and Gold Coast local about her creative process and how vibrant fabrics are making a big comeback.
How did you first get into the print and design industry?
I never dreamed I would end up in textiles. I come from a line of talented sewists, and my mum even owned a fabric store, but the crafty talent ends with me. I am creative, but I am terribly impatient at following a pattern and much prefer to spend my time drawing. I didn’t start until I had my son in 2010. Instagram was really taking off and so there were swathes of baby businesses selling cute little outfits. I made my son (and the next three children) cute baby clothes out of my fabrics. Once companies caught wind of an Aussie designer who could create designs that both spoke to them and resonated with their brand, commissions started flowing in. After five years of creating art for other people I finally established my own fabric business, which continues to thrive.
From a concept to a final fabric, how does your brand come to life and what is that journey?
The key to all of my designs is joy. I like to hide little ‘smiles in the mind’ in my designs. That is, people look at it and either put something together (like a pun) or spot something unusual (like a cane toad or a plover swooping) or see something that they just love (like kids swinging on a Hills Hoist) and they smile in their mind. As for the literal process, I have that idea
percolating, sometimes for months, and then I finally put pen to digital paper. Once I have a design I’m happy with we will send it off for sampling, then adjust the colours and scale accordingly. The most exciting part is releasing it to our customers and seeing what they do with it, what kinds of garments they create.
How do you balance your work with your family and life in general, and what’s your advice for other mums looking to do the same?
Recognise and appreciate that it’s a slow burn. I have told myself for years to wait, slow down, things will happen eventually, and the kids matter more. (This doesn’t stop me working stupid hours or occasionally drawing on my iPad instead of watching my daughter do her gymnastics!) No one else is going to prioritise my family for me - that’s my job and I don’t apologise for it. Hopefully this gives other parents the permission to do the same.
What do you love about living on the Gold Coast?
We are literally in the very back streets of the Gold Coast here in the Hinterland, so I connect with both the Gold Coast and the Scenic Rim. I love exploring the rainforests around Mt Tamborine. We live on a leafy, bubbling creek at the base of the mountain and it’s paradise. I was commissioned to do a design for the Gold Coast Music Festival and that was a huge honour! But then COVID-19 came, and the design was never used, so I turned it into a fabric and it’s a crowd favourite. Readers will have to keep their eyes peeled as they’ll be seeing a lot of that particular print later this year - I am already so excited for Gold Coasters to spot Q1 and MovieWorld and even a little nod to Amy Shark. Elements that no one else will notice.
Do you think we are seeing a bit of a return to colour and clothing and fabrics that makes us feel good?
100%. COVID-19 is a kind of perfect storm that brought us to this new age of dopamine dressing. Firstly, we had lots of time to reconsider what’s important to us. Secondly: Zoom calls. It started out as everyone wearing suit shirts up top and boxer shorts down the bottom and quickly devolved into this kind of lovely way for everyone to show a bit more of themselves: their cats, their fun shirts, their photos of their trip to New Zealand in the background. When people returned to the office I would imagine there was a lot less pressure for the corporate costume and people felt more open to express themselves.
What’s next on the horizon for your brand?
This October, I am very excited to have my first ever collection launching in Best & Less stores! There’s something for the entire family, which is really cool. The future is all very big and scary and exciting for this little Gold Coast Mama.

Is learning to surf on your 2023
bucket list?
Anyone that has tried surfing before will agree that being in the ocean surrounded by water, and ultimately riding a wave is one of the best feelings you can ever experience. As a sport that has both physical and mental health benefits, surfing is a great activity for everybody.
Practicing surfing gets you fit, increases your resistance and strength and makes you feel great about yourself. It also forces you to be present in the now and focus on yourself, without worrying about your day-to-day life. When you’re out in the ocean, you blend in with nature and can enjoy the feeling of being free. Not to mention it’s a great way to get out of the house, off your phone and spend time reconnecting with nature.
One of the tricky parts of surfing is getting started, as it requires certain skills and techniques. So, the best way to start your surfing journey is by using professional
coaching to get you on the right foot. Find yourself a surf school in your area, a private surf coach or join a surf camp to take your first lessons and build a good foundation before you get out on your own. It will make the learning curve much less steep.
Surf Getaways are a local surf school and surf travel company run by women, for women who aim to make surfing more accessible for women. They create a fun, safe and supportive environment for women of all ages, shapes, sizes and backgrounds, and they have some of the best female surf coaches in the industry.
So if you’re a female over 30 who’s ever wanted to give it a try, join them and a group of like-minded local women on their 4-week clinics in Burleigh, starting every month. You’ll learn the basics of surfing, safety in the ocean and see what all the fuss is about.
In search of a surf school on the Gold Coast? We’ve got you covered with our all female surf lessons. Sign up today! surfgetaways. com.au/surf-clinics-gold-coast
Love bombing:
Is your new romance too good to be true?
Picture this: you’ve just come back from a first date and it went really well - in fact, you’re head over heels. You shared your dreams and goals and even talked about marriage, and you both feel as if you’ve found ‘the one’.
While it might seem like the start of a beautiful romance, the reality is that the above scenario could just be your first experience of love bombing. Gaining popularity as a term in recent years, Christina
Foxwell, Life CoachThey say all you need is love, but what happens when your fledgling romance turns into a nightmare? We talk to Christina Foxwell, leading Australian life coach, about the phenomenon of love bombing, and how you can avoid being taken for a ride in your relationships.
love bombing is defined by an attempt to influence someone with over-the-top displays of affection and attention very early on in the relationship, followed by a sudden and unexpected drop-off of interest that develops into an emotionally-draining cycle.
the lovey-dovey language or even display anger and annoyance towards you which can feel like you’re seeing a whole new personality emerge - the secret here is that you’re likely to be seeing the real person now, so take heed.
The calling cards of a love bomber are particularly insidious as they overlap with genuine displays of interest that happen in all new relationships, so keep an eye out for these red flags:
If you feel as if your relationship might be a love bombing situation, it’s important to nip this in the bud. A love bomber won’t like to be called out for what they are, so try to address this concern in person and be the one to pump the brakes - this way, you throw them off balance and halt the cycle continuing.
Life coach Christina Foxwell shares, “Love bombing is characterised by specifically toxic behaviour that will eventuate in control and codependency. We are seeing more awareness of the term because in recent years, people are recognising the impact of unhealthy relationships and the toll on mental health.”
So, why do people love bomb? Christina explains, “It’s a manipulative tactic to draw in a new partner to be more in control by increasing the dependence on the love bomber. People that love bomb could have a poor understanding of boundaries, but often it suggests narcissistic tendencies.”
By the time you’re ready to start updating your Facebook status and planning the honeymoon, your love bomber is likely to start pulling back and switching up how they engage with you. They may stop texting or calling regularly, suddenly drop
1. Words over actions: Love bombers aren’t looking to commit to someone, they just want the thrill of the chase, so while you’re likely to hear all their big plans for your relationship, a love bomber won’t back it up with action consistently - in other words, if they don’t walk the talk, you might have a love bomber on your hands.
2. All-in from day one: A love bomber may profess their love for you well before you even feel like you’ve got to know them. If your new romance is dropping that four-letter-word within the first weeks or even days of knowing you, they may be trying to lure you into a false sense of security.
3. It’s a rollercoaster: If you’re further into a love bombing scenario, you may have already experienced the drop-off and find yourself confused, anxious or let down. You may try and step up your efforts to re-ignite the “magic” you had in the first weeks, but remember that for a love bomber, this is exactly what they want to see.
Christina suggests setting clear boundaries, guiding us to “Be clear on your romantic expectations. It could sound like “I have many commitments that are important to me right now, this is what I can dedicate to our relationship” or “When you say overly romantic things to me it makes me uncomfortable,” for example”, Christina adds, “If they become angry or unhappy with this line of conversation, you need to consider if this is right for you. Are you being drawn in to be controlled? Will this relationship be healthy in the long term?”
If you feel as if you could be love bombing within your relationships, Christina has these words of advice: “Recognise that your behaviour is not allowing you a healthy relationship. Be open to get support from a coach or therapist, listen to your partner and be open to change.”
When ongoing, love bombing can signal the start of an abusive relationship, so seek support from family, friends and even professionals to end and separate yourself from the situation.
“...LOVE BOMBING IS DEFINED BY AN ATTEMPT TO INFLUENCE SOMEONE WITH OVER-THE-TOP DISPLAYS OF AFFECTION...”
“WE ARE SEEING MORE AWARENESS OF THE TERM... PEOPLE ARE RECOGNISING THE IMPACT OF UNHEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS AND THE TOLL ON MENTAL HEALTH.”
“BE CLEAR ON YOUR ROMANTIC EXPECTATIONS.”

A touch of luxury
When Palm Lake Resort Pelican Waters architects, planners and management first sat down to consider the design elements and inclusions for their most opulent and prestigious over-50s community to date, one thing was clear – modern over-50s will not settle for an outdated ‘retirement’ approach to living. Their diaries are full and they are putting themselves and their health and wellness first.
With more than 45 years’ experience in designing, building and operating lifestyle communities along Australia’s eastern seaboard, Palm Lake Resort Pelican Waters planners understand that over-50s aren’t necessarily looking to downsize but rather, ‘right-size’. Yes, homes need to be low maintenance, but they also need to have the luxury fittings and fixtures that this demographic has worked hard throughout their lives/careers to now enjoy. Homes also need to have the space to allow extended family and friends to come and stay, while also supporting those recreational activities that make these years so rewarding. But more so, there’s
been a definite and recognisable shift in the over-50s demographic to prioritise health and wellness. They’re committing more time to being active and working out. Yoga, Pilates and tai chi classes are not simply one-offs but consistent inclusions on the weekly activities list. Meditation is more mainstream than it has ever been before.
To answer this call, Palm Lake Resort Pelican Waters has placed special emphasis on creating the most opulent and considered community facilities ever seen in an over-50s community here in Australia. The resort itself is nestled right alongside the award-winning, Greg Norman-designed Pelican Waters Golf Course on a swathe of stunning waterway behind the Sunshine Coast’s finest beaches, so even before construction began, this resort was always going to be a natural Mecca for golfers, watersports enthusiasts and adventure
seekers. But when you talk about jewels in crowns, Palm Lake Resort Pelican Water’s main community precinct, The Springs Country Club, is an absolute sparkling diamond.
With a rooftop bar, resort swimming pools as well as exclusive dining and social spaces, The Springs Country Club also offers a Palm Lake Resort first – the Mirador wellness centre.
Mirador is a purpose-designed wellness area within the greater Country Club precinct. It’s the first time in Palm Lake Resort’s 45-year history (and a first among the 28 community lifestyle resorts that make up the Palm Lake Group’s national portfolio) that such a dedicated approach to wellness has been embraced. And the reaction from over 50s so far has been nothing short of incredibly positive.
Milon gymnasium
Milon gymnasiums have made an impressive addition to the newest Palm Lake Resort addresses and Pelican Waters homeowners will also enjoy the Milon experience. Users have embraced the circuit of slick electronic exercise machines. Each homeowner has their own personal Milon smart card that they insert in each machine as they progress around the circuit, giving each machine that user’s set-up requirement. The smart cards also store homeowners’ health information and exercise progress in the cloud, which can be made accessible to those homeowners’ own chosen health professionals.
Pool and spa
Palm Lake Resort Pelican Waters has been designed around a Palm Springs theme. The epically chic main outdoor pool deck overlooks adjacent natural waterways and Pelican Waters Golf Course. If you can drag yourself away from the poolside cabanas (and the swim-up bar!), this is the perfect location for swimming laps. And for those seeking more aqua exercise options, simply head indoors where a second, climatecontrolled heated swimming pool provides the location for weekly aqua fitness classes.
Aqua aerobics is an undoubted favourite right across the Palm Lake Group, and H20 Pilates is also popular. Ideal for those who
have issues with weight-bearing exercises, aqua fitness helps increase muscle strength without straining.
Yoga and Pilates rooms
To the delight of many modern over-50s, Mirador will offer separate dedicated spaces for homeowners’ yoga practise and Pilates workouts. For the first time in any Palm Lake Resort, Pelican Waters will also offer premium reformer Pilates machines so homeowners can take their Pilates journey to the next level.
While the dedicated space and equipment is one thing, Palm Lake Resort is also committed to providing expert instructors and personal trainers to oversee homeowners’ workouts and wellness sessions.
Wellness lounge
Beyond the bending, stretching and sweat, Mirador’s wellness lounge is the place to take a well-earned moment to pause and regroup. With gentle relaxation music as a constant backdrop, homeowners are encouraged to pour themselves a sparkling water from the Billi tap and find a comfortable lounge. This space is the gentle way to top up your zen.
Sauna
Any wellness centre is not complete without a sauna and, as expected, Palm
Lake Resort Pelican Waters will offer the most premium sauna experience around. The benefits of sauna use are manifold. From relieving sore muscles, helping your body eliminate toxins and clearing the skin, to reducing blood pressure, stress and pain, time is well spent in a sauna.
And more…
Mirador offers some of the country’s best health and wellness spaces and the most premium equipment but, to Palm Lake Resort, it’s also the little things that count – and that make the Pelican Waters difference. Changerooms and amenities have been well considered and homeowners will also have their own personal locker within the Mirador wellness centre so it’s easy for them to feel like this space is an extension of their own.
Overall, there’s little doubt that Palm Lake Resort Pelican Waters will be the answer to the resort community lifestyle so highly valued and sought out by a modern demographic of Aussie over-50s. While the word “iconic” has already been bandied about, in reference to Palm Lake Resort Pelican Waters, one thing is for sure. This is one coveted over-50s address – and this is your time.
Having created a partnership that has spanned almost 15 years, Louisa and Jon Hollenberg sit down with Get It Magazine’s Holly Bartter to reflect on a love that has produced a family, two successful businesses and millions of happy memories.
It’s said that finding ‘the one’ can be a numbers game, and for Louisa and Jon Hollenberg, that number is 17 to be exact.
“We met at a world record-breaking speed dating event here on the Gold Coast on Valentines Day in 2008,” Louisa tells me. “Jon was number 17 of 20 dates we had that night and he was a stand out. We instantly connected and spent time chatting after the event had finished.
We had our first official date 2 weeks later and we haven’t looked back since!”
Today, the Gold Coast couple balances their family life alongside two businesses - Louisa is the founder and owner of Earth and Skin Organic Day Spa, while Jon is founder and owner of Five by Five Digital Marketing.
For Louisa, an entrepreneurial spirit was not only an attractive quality in her partner but something that runs in the family. She shares, “Both of my parents are entrepreneurs, so while it wasn’t a characteristic I was aware I was looking for, it probably was something I found appealing in Jon on a subconscious level.”
“I started my business when our kids were toddlers - there weren’t any organic beauty salons or day spas around and yet the organic farmers markets were so busy. I knew it was a trend that wasn’t going away and these people would be interested in reducing their exposure to toxins in more than just their food. I started Earth and Skin as a sole trader but now have 16 team members and we have helped over 3000 people reduce their toxic load and enjoy better skin.”
louisa and jon’s Entrepreneurial Love Story
“WE INSTANTLY CONNECTED AND WE HAVEN’T LOOKED BACK SINCE!”
Jon adds, “At Five by Five we build great looking, high performing digital solutions that generate leads & enquiries for our clients. This year marks 17 years in business! Both of us being business owners makes our relationship work really well. Unless you have run a business before, it is very hard to relate to the challenges that get thrown your way. If either of us ever are having a hard time, we cut each other slack, make allowances and support each other where required. We always know we have each other’s back.”
When it comes to making it all happen with so much going on, the two have found that playing to one another’s strengths is key.
“We are always very clear on each other’s roles and responsibilities,” Jon explains, “I’m very detail oriented and handle all the administration, finances and annoying compliance stuff. Louisa is more of the creative type and does an amazing job at all the day to day running of the house, organising kids, school stuff and just generally keeping the wheels turning for the family.”
When asked what they admire most in one another, Louisa appreciates Jon’s commitment to self-improvement, telling me, “In every aspect of his life, whether it’s fitness, his business or relationships, he is always looking for ways to better himself. I wish I had his level of self control!”
Jon adds, “Louisa challenges me to think bigger - she is amazingly ambitious. I generally find my comfort zone and Louisa has a magnificent way of painting the brightness of the future which usually entails chasing down even bigger goals!”
While Jon and his family were originally from Melbourne, Gold Coast-born Louisa couldn’t think of anywhere else she’d rather be. “We love the weather, the accessibility to the beach, the hinterland, northern NSW and Brisbane. We love to travel but, in our opinion, there isn’t a better place to live in the world!”
As we head into Valentine’s Day, 2023 marks an extra-special anniversary for the two, Jon shares, “This Valentine’s Day will be 15 years since meeting Louisa! I’m planning to
take her out for a nice lunch, drink a bottle of wine together and reflect on 15 amazing, joy-filled years.”
“We understand the importance of spending time together as a couple,” Louisa adds, “It will only be a few years of our lives that we will have children living at home so we make sure we spend the time nurturing our relationship. We want to make sure that when we are empty nesters, we still enjoy each other’s company.”
Before we part ways, I ask the couple their favourite memory as a couple, and Fiji is at the forefront of both their minds. “My favourite memory was our wedding day in Fiji,” Louisa tells me “Although most people are nervous walking down the aisle I was so calm and confident. I’ll never forget seeing Jon’s face when he saw me in my dress.”
“Our first overseas trip together was in Fiji where I fell head over heels for Louisa”, Jon adds, “We lived out of each other’s pockets for 2 weeks straight, had an amazing adventure and then returned a year later to get married there!”
“We always know we have each other’s back!”

Love Show yourself some
After the silly season, it’s natural to feel a little depleted heading into the New Year even if you’ve got a head start on your resolutions. With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to create some self care rituals that make you feel good from the inside out, because we all know that taking care of ourselves allows us to bring our best selves to our careers, our relationships and families.
Refresh Your Look
This month, make time to catch up on your favourite grooming rituals - whether it’s a new nail colour or a fresh cut, there’s nothing like that post-appointment glow. Of course, you don’t have to rely on a salon to get the look you love - there are an abundance of gel nail kits to get creative at home (or even invite friends over to DIY together). Try a hot oil hair mask at home, light the good candle and create a spa environment from the comfort of your living room - even better if you can forgo the phones to really switch off.
Do Nothing - Really
In a world where productivity is king, it’s not always easy to truly relax and unwind, but there’s so much value in truly doing nothing. If you’re someone who is always on the go with projects and a to-do list a mile long, sometimes you need to press pause and quiet your mind.
Sitting somewhere peaceful (ideally out in nature) without technology or other stimulation is so important for us to reflect, process and even recharge our creative batteries - boredom is not a bad word and in fact it can be very beneficial to have a few days a month where you feel like you did “nothing”. These restful windows will keep you powered up when you need to be!
Solo Date Nights
Even if you’re in a relationship, try to pencil in a solo date night (or day) this month. Whether it’s catching up on your favourite TV series and a comfort meal at home, some retail therapy or a coffee at your go-to spot, soak up the freedom that comes with doing exactly what you want.
For social butterflies, it can feel daunting to consider taking yourself out for dinner, but you’ll quickly catch the bug for solo dining (the best part, no need to share dessert!).
Check In With Yourself
A habit we can all benefit from is selfreflection, so make time to check in with yourself regularly. Ask yourself how balanced your life feels currently, if there are areas you need to address and assess your mood day to day. Stress and burnout can often creep up on us, so look for areas you can reach out for help and support, schedule in a mindfulness or meditation session, time to talk with friends and family and make your mental health a priority.
By making time for self-care across the year you’ll create the perfect foundation for a life that’s filled with love (starting with you!).
Valentine’s Day brings plenty of opportunities to show love to those special people in our lives, but it’s just as important to show yourself that same level of attention. Whether you’re dating, coupled or happily single this V-Day, we’ve got you covered with some foolproof self care ideas to stay feeling loved up all year long.
Let’s talk about SelfCare and why it’s so important!
Self-care is one of the most valuable tools you can learn to implement into your everyday life. Self-care is something that you consciously do for the purpose of taking care of your mental, emotional, and physical health. It sounds simple but it’s something we very often forget to prioritise. It is the routine maintenance you need to do to function to be your best not only for others, but also for yourself.
THE MOST COMMON REASONS WE AVOID EXERCISE ARE:
Lack of time
You have so many other responsibilities that you rarely have time for yourself. When you have a brief moment to slow down, another critical task quickly moves to the front of the line.
Even though your to-do list never ends, there is still that little voice in the back of your mind telling you that you should make your health a priority. Listen to this voice! Find a few minutes in your day - 30 to 60 minutes – for exercise. A walk, a quick high-intensity workout or a half hour weight session – any of these are great places to
start. Remember that exercise doesn’t have to be done in one big chunk to be effective!
Guilt
Mum guilt (actually, parent/carer guilt) is a real thing!
What will my children do when I’m exercising? Can my partner look after the kids while I’m gone and not feel stressed or need my help?
Sometimes we think that taking care of ourselves is equivalent to selfishness. But finding a consistent health care routine, is one of the most selfless acts you can give to your family.
Studies show that consistent exercise is linked to increased productivity and mental focus. This means that exercising regularly can help you become more present with your partner, children, and with yourself.
Letting go of self-inflicted guilt is an important part of building self-care through exercise. Most of us tend to push self-care aside because it feels selfish or something else comes up and you let that one hour for yourself go, but prioritising you once a day allows you to take better care of those you love because you have filled your cup and are at optimum mental, emotional and physical health. You will be in a much better space to take care of others if you take care of yourself first.
Fitness doesn’t have to be about pushing yourself to the max. That’s where exercise for self-care can become a regular habit. Our bodies naturally want to move!
Regular physical activity provides the following health benefits:
• Improved weight management
• Reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and some cancers
• Lower blood pressure
• Reduced risk of heart attack
• Increased energy levels
• Improved overall mood
• Reduced stress levels
Moving daily helps us to better care for our bodies and our minds.
Self-care, in many ways, is about prevention. It’s a way to make sure you stay strong and resilient when under stress or other major life events occur.

A bit
of this ...
We all know the way to a man (or woman’s!) heart is through their stomach. So, during this month of love, impress your significant other with one of these delicious chicken or seafood dishes.
Ingredients:
Chicken Wings
• 1.5kgs chicken wings cut into nibbles
• 1–2 tablespoons grapeseed oil
• 1 tablespoon Char-Griller All-Purpose Rub
For the Chipotle Glaze
• ⅓ cup Chipotle in adobo sauce
• ½ cup water
• ½ cup brown sugar
• 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
• 1 teaspoon onion powder
• ½ teaspoon cracked pepper
• 2 cloves garlic, crushed
• 2 tablespoons soy sauce
• 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
• 1 teaspoon corn flour dissolved in 2 tablespoons water
For Serving
• 1 lime
• Creamy Chipotle White BBQ Sauce
Charred Green Bean Salad
• 300g long green beans, trimmed
• 6 tablespoons olive oil (2 T for cooking + 4 T for the dressing)
• 1 shallot, finely sliced
• 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
• 1 ½ tablespoons Dijon mustard
• 1 tablespoon water
• ½ teaspoon salt
• ½ teaspoon sugar
• 1 clove garlic crushed
• 2 tablespoons fresh mint, roughly chopped + extra for garnish
• ¼ cup slivered almonds
Chipotle Chicken Wings with Charred Green Bean Salad
Method:
Charred Green Bean Salad
1. In a bowl, whisk the white wine vinegar, Dijon mustard, 4 tablespoons of olive oil, water, salt, sugar, garlic, and mint together and set aside. This is the dressing for the beans.
2. In a bowl, place the beans, sliced shallot, 1 tablespoon of oil and season with salt and pepper. Mix well so all beans are coated.
3. While cooking the chipotle chicken. Heat remaining olive oil in a griddle pan over direct heat and add the seasoned trimmed beans and shallot. Cook the beans, stirring every now and again until beans are slightly blistered and cooked through. Around 5-6 minutes.
4. Once beans are cooked place them on a serving plate, pour over the dressing and sprinkle with slithered almonds and fresh mint.
Chicken Wings
1. Prepare BBQ for indirect cooking at high heat – 375F/190 degrees C.
2. Cut the chicken wings into nibbles discarding the wing tip or you can leave the wings whole if you wish.
3. Lightly coat the wings with the grapeseed oil, then season evenly with Char-Griller All Purpose Rub.
4. Cook wings in the BBQ in indirect heat for 25–30 minutes, turning them half-way.
Meanwhile to make the glaze
1. Add all ingredients, except the corn flour into a small saucepan and bring to a simmer. Simmer for 10 minutes or until glaze reduced by around half. Stir in the corn flour slurry and simmer until the glaze thickens, 1–2 minutes. For a mild sauce, strain the glaze to remove the chipotle chilies. For a spicier wing, blitz the glaze until smooth. Add to the Char-Griller Basting bucket to cool slightly.
2. Once wings have been cooking for 30 minutes and the skin is crispy, baste the wings every 5 minutes with the Chipotle Glaze and cook for a further 15 minutes. Aim to baste the wings at least 3 times.
3. When the wings reach an internal temp of 165F/74 degrees C, they are cooked and ready to eat. Squeeze fresh lime juice over the wings and serve with Creamy Chipotle White BBQ Sauce for dipping!

Making Hair Health a Priority
Faced with significant hair loss due to Type-1 diabetes, Sozo Australia founder Isabella Charanduk saw an opportunity to create a new type of natural hair care. We chat to Isabella about her hair health journey and her unwavering dedication to the right ingredients.
1. How did you come up with the concept for Sozo?
Growing up, I always had a passion for hair and beauty, but it wasn’t until I experienced significant hair loss after being unexpectedly diagnosed with type one diabetes in 2019, that I started to truly understand my hair health.
Experiencing significant hair loss was extremely worrying. For several months, my hair continuously shed and became extremely thin and unhealthy so I was desperate to find a solution. This sparked my passion for creating truly all-natural hair products that actually worked!
December 2019
2. What should we know about female hair loss?
Since launching our Sozo Hair Health range, I have been able to speak to a countless number of ladies who suffer from hair loss, thinning or shedding - it’s not uncommon for us to experience hair loss at some point in our lives. Many women, like me, have suffered hair loss due to a health condition or illness. In fact, I have had several people contact me saying they’ve experienced hair loss since having Covid. It is also very common to lose hair with changing hormones, for example when having a baby or going through menopause.
3. How do your products vary from other synthetic hair loss ranges on the market?
Our Sozo Hair Health range has not only been scientifically formulated to promote new hair growth, but also treat and improve your overall scalp and hair health. Many traditional, chemical based hair products can leave your hair feeling nice in the short term but can often have many negative impacts long term. One key difference is that our formulas have been created with aloe barbadensis leaf juice as the first ingredient, instead of water! Aloe
June 2022
barbabensis leaf juice alongside the other all-natural ingredients in our products, help to hydrate and encourage new hair growth.
4. What do you love about the Gold Coast as your base?
I was blessed to be born and raised here on the Gold Coast and I’m so grateful I still call it home - there is so much beauty to appreciate and enjoy. There is definitely a strong community of small businesses here which is lovely. I believe the Gold Coast most definitely has an appreciation for all-natural, high quality and locally made products, consumers are certainly becoming more aware about what we put on and in our bodies each and every day.
5. What has the response been to your range?
We have received such wonderful feedback and reviews from our customers. I have found that many people believe natural haircare is better and safer for them but that it also doesn’t perform very well. By continuously educating our audience about our natural haircare products, they have been able to experience healthier hair like they have not been able to achieve in the past, especially with all-natural products.
