Ditch Plastic in July!

EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK there is the use of plastics in our modern society. Plastic Free July was born in 2011 from a simple idea of refusing single-use plastics during July and reducing the impact of plastic pollution.

Plastic Free July is a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution so we can have cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities.

Taking part is an easy way to learn the skills to reduce and avoid the use of plastic by refusing to use it, rethinking how plastic is used, and reducing what we consume. Make an effort this July to reduce or eliminate your plastic use.

You can go it alone at home or join the challenge at www.plasticfreejuly. org to receive tips and tricks in weekly emails while being part of this global movement.

Want to get plastic free?

• Drink tap water or buy glass bottles

• Avoid plastic bags

• Get rid of single doses and avoid buying single-dose packaging for your personal care

• Travel with your reusable water bottle

• Get yourself a travel kit and take cutlery, glasses, and dishes out with you

• Pick up alternative straws – use those made of glass, paper, bamboo or steel

• Buy cardboard or glass products

• Try getting creative with recycling. If you have disposable bottles to throw away, remember that you can always reuse them. You just need a little bit of imagination!

Did you know -

1. Only 9% of all plastic produced is recycled

2. A whopping 2 million plastic bags are used every minute worldwide

3. Single-use plastics are illegal in some parts of the world

4. Every minute of every day a truckload of plastic is dumped into the ocean

5. 73% of beach litter worldwide is plastic

6. One million plastic bottles are bought every minute

7. There could be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050

8. Up to 95% of plastic polluting oceans is carried by 10 rivers

9. 99% of seabirds will be eating plastic by 2050

10. The average person eats 70,000 microplastics each year

11. The average time that a plastic bag is used is just 12 minutes

12. Over the past 50 years, world plastic production has doubled

Queensland’s ban on the supply of single-use plastic items started on 1 September 2021.

Community, industry and business consultation has shown strong support to expand the ban of singleuse plastics.

Think about it. Why would you make something that you’re going to use for a few minutes out of a material that’s basically going to last forever, and you’re just going to throw it away. What’s up with that?

This parkrun has been made possible with a grant received through Gympie Regional Council’s Community Grants Program. If you want to find out more, go to www. parkrun.com.au or contact Event Director Greg Garner on 0488 601 750. parkrun Fun Facts

Lounge around at Rainbow Markets

Cooloola CoastCare Turtle Care

WORKING WITH THE Rainbow Beach Community Centre and Hall committee, the Cooloola CoastCare Turtle Care team offered an ECO LOUNGE at the Rainbow Beach markets on Saturday 10 June.

The Eco Lounge provided a sit-down area for market patrons in the centre of the quadrangle of market stalls.

The area offered a place to sit and enjoy the coffee, cake, GF donuts, BBQ sausage (all from market vendors), listen to the music, or somewhere to park your partner.

Cooloola CoastCare set up 4 marquees with tables and chairs and a children’s activity area. The activity area proved very popular with the sensory play provided by Liz Couchman of Clever Bugs (www.cleverbugs.com.au).

A raffle was run with a ‘turtley’ prize and the excited winner was the Montgomery family of Rainbow Beach.

Cooloola CoastCare Turtle Care will set up the Eco Lounge at the next Rainbow Beach market on Saturday 8 July, come along and say hi.

to Jenny and Bruno

RAINBOW BEACH is sad to say goodbye to much-loved locals Jenny Tanner and Bruno Brennan. Jenny, our longtime local librarian, met Bruno over 20 years ago and they made a good life together in Rainbow Beach.

Because of working in different locations they decided to move to their new home in Veteran, so they can be together.

They both will miss their friends, locals, and community but being close by in Gympie will allow for frequent visits and holidays in Rainbow. You will be greatly missed!

Volunteer Grants Success!

THANKS TO A Volunteer Grant from the Australian Government’s Department of Social Services, CIRS will purchase a Square register with POS capacity to make life easier for our much-valued office volunteers and keep us all up to date with new banking processes.

We will still accept cash payments for our popular book sales, office services, and hire fees. In fact, the new register will make cash transactions much simpler for volunteers and give us greater versatility in accepting donations too.

Other items we will purchase with the $4,500 grant include volunteer training and fuel vouchers to make volunteering with CIRS a great opportunity for personal development that doesn’t put you out of pocket.

Our thanks to the Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien for supporting our grant application.

Movie Night

CIRS WILL LAUNCH the CoolaFlix Film Night program on 8 July. At the time of this printing, the film chosen for our first CoolaFlix film night was still not confirmed by the distributor. It was only recently released in cinemas.

Here’s a clue: This is the sequel to a blockbuster animated feature film released in 2012 that was celebrated for its innovation in beautiful 3D imagery. Be warned though, this film is 3 hours and 12 minutes long. Bring a cushion.

If, for some reason, we are unable to secure screening rights for this film before Market Saturday on 8 July, we will have a standby film ready to go and promote it at the markets and via Facebook, posters, email, and word of mouth.

So mark the date on your calendar. Popcorn, soft drinks and food will be available.

Rainbow Beach School P&C News

OVER RECENT weeks many students have been participating in an Auskick program which was held after school over a 4-week period. The students were able to explore AFL in a safe and fun environment, all the while learning many football skills. The program wrapped up with a Parents vs Kids game and the results are in: the students and their newfound skills won in the end.

We also had a special visit at the end of May from the Variety Victoria 4WD Adventure Group who stopped in at the school for lunch enroute to K’Gari. There were over 40 participants and approximately twenty 4WD vehicles that made their way onto the school oval.

As the participants entered, we were flooded with a sea of bright rainbow colours. Not only did they bring the rainbow to Rainbow Beach, but they also brought their bright, bubbly personalities ready to entertain the students. They started by playing games with the biggest beach ball the kids had ever seen.

After enjoying a much needed fresh and light lunch, kindly prepared by Rainbow Beach Fruits and some wonderful parent volunteers, the crew set up a game which involved participants laying on the ground, while balancing cups to fill up with water that the kids were collecting with wet sponges.

School Principal Mr Bennett kindly volunteered to play the game and as you can imagine there weren’t too many dry people by the end.

In other news, at time of writing we are excited about the Colour Explosion Fun Run which is being held on the school oval on the last day of school, Friday 23 June at 1pm.

The event is a first of its kind for the school and we know there are many excited children ready to be covered in Rainbow Paint Powder all whilst completing a ‘challenging’ obstacle course. Stay tuned for photos in next month’s issue!

We are also still very busy finalising applications for the OSHC program and are continuing our fundraising efforts at the Sports Club Raffles at the Fishing Classic and again on Fridays in July.

Young and Not-As-Young enjoy Old Time Dance

THE DANCE HELD in June was active for our 40 attendees. Patrons came from Monti, Gympie, Maleny, Goomboorian area, and Tin Can Bay.

Chris Doyle played very wittingly at times, even putting a Gypsy Tap on to have two young teenagers get up on the floor and join in. They are coming to our dance lesson on Saturday 1 July, from 3pm to 5pm. They are wanting to learn our country hall dances.

It is great to see them keen to dance. Mal and Karen are teaching very easy steps. Maybe you might like to try. Contact Julie 0428 824 115 for info.

The $50-value meat tray was won by Gary from Gympie which included a whole chicken (not a feather on it). The fruit and veg tray ($40 value) was won by Mark who is a new patron to our dances. Well done men. Mark also won the lucky door prize.

Our next dance is Saturday 15 July. A themed dance: Xmas in July. A prize is available for the best dressed themed dancer. Come along and join in a good social dance night. Country Hall Old Time Dances with music by Chris Doyle – one of our Queensland band The Wolverines members.

For more info contact Julie from Cooloola Coast Dances Group on 0428 824 115.

RSL dance profits to go to Kids with Cancer Foundation

TIN CAN BAY RSL Sub Branch are pleased to advise that profits from the upcoming Rock and Roll Dance Extravaganza will be donated to the Kids with Cancer Foundation.

As President Don Holland said, ‘Whilst our mission is primarily to provide care, commemoration, and camaraderie to veterans and their families, the Tin Can Bay RSL Sub Branch is also committed to supporting the community in general.

‘Our business plan includes donations to local organisations in need such as the Tin Can Bay P-10 School pedal car project. However, we are also committed to supporting broader community charities such as Kids with Cancer and The Biggest Morning Tea.’

This year’s Rock and Roll Dance Extravaganza will be held on Saturday 12 August and will include an evening BBQ, raffles, and live music donated free of charge by our regular Sunday BBQ entertainers.

As Entertainment Manager Mike Austin said, ‘Our entertainers are always happy to support the RSL and our annual dance night, however when I told them about supporting Kids with Cancer they became really enthusiastic and keen to make it another great night.’

Well, I’m sure the local community will also be keen to come along and enjoy the dance and to support this highly necessary charity.

To all our entertainers can I please say, ‘Thank you for your service!’

Awards aplenty for Walkers

CONGRATULATIONS to six of our Heart Foundation Walkers, who achieved the following awards:

Hilda T, Linda Fewtrell, Lorraine Goode, and Ralph receive a certificate and a $10 discount voucher from the National Heart Foundation Online Shop for their first 50 walks. Sylvie receives her 100 Walks badge, plus certificate and a $15 voucher, while Dixie receives her second badge to pin on her red cap: 200 Walks, certificate and a $20 voucher.

It’s great to have your company as we enjoy walking along the Tin Can Bay foreshore and boardwalk, Cooloola Cove streets and creekside ‘with our Wheelies out in front’, before our coffee afterwards.

Unbeknownst to me, one or more Walkers nominated me for the

2023 Golden Shoe Awards, which “recognise the incredible contribution our volunteer Walk Organisers make to their walking groups. As true community champions, they often go above and beyond to ensure their group is welcoming, motivating and supportive to each and every walker, each and every walk.

“The theme for this year’s awards aligned with the national Volunteer Week theme of ‘The Changemakers’. Over 400 nominations were received, sharing the various ways in which Walk Organisers were creating positive change for their groups.”

Well, thank you very much. The reality is it’s a TEAM EFFORT. Huge thank you from me to our Walk Organisers: Beverley Jones, Denise McKean, Judy Kiddle, Kate Gregory, and Kristine Pack, and to each and every member of our Heart Foundation Walking groups: ‘One

PROBUS VISIT GOVERNMENT HOUSE

IN THE WIDE BAY area there are nine Probus clubs in Gympie, Maryborough, Hervey Bay, Bundaberg, and Bargara. During the year, members arrange and enjoy their own club’s activities and from time to time have the opportunity to join in activities/ events arranged by other clubs.

Recently two of our members, Katrina van den Brenk and Cherryl Mossman, joined the Gympie Probus Club on a day trip to Government House, Brisbane.

It was a very enjoyable day with a tour of the historic building, beautiful landscaped gardens and the stables which now house the Governor’s Rolls Royce and other vehicles. To top it off, the Governor, Dr Jeannette Young, addressed the group, before heading back home via Redcliffe for lunch.

On the local front, members enjoyed lunch at

Fraser Grill - a good opportunity to catch up with fellow members and enjoy a delicious lunch.

At our June meeting we were addressed by Lauren King, local health and lifestyle adviser, who spoke to us about exercises to promote better muscle tone, physical health and balance, so important for seniors. We are all inspired to follow her tips for simple exercises at home.

Meetings are on each second Monday of the month at 2pm at Sandcastle Motel in Tin Can Bay and include a guest speaker and afternoon tea and a chat.

Sing it loud with Coolabay Choir

JUST A LITTLE MISSIVE for the paper and looking forward to a few more voices joining. We are up to a regular fifteen members now and some interesting music to add to our repertoire.

Great joy to welcome another fellow to add to our lone chorister, so music will be written for at least three parts!

Regular rehearsals on Wednesdays 3pm to 4pm in the Vets and Community Hall in Cooloola Cove.

DroughtRunners Report

Tony Stewart - 0408 767 930

rainbowfishing@southernphone.com.au

THIS MONTH we have been quiet with our donations as we strive to build reserves – you never know what may be our next major project.

During the month we have sent out $1000 to help feed the homeless in Gympie, coordinated by the hard working Marlene Owen and her team. You will find them cooking meals every afternoon.

Bill Neil’s wonderful collection of handmade wooden toys were delivered to Eugowra Progress Association by our friends travelling back to Victoria. I am sure the kids there that lost everything in the floods will be thrilled with them.

Thank you’s this month to Greg Jones for his $100 deposit and to the anonymous donor of $400.

Wayne Kerle continues to collect bottles and cans. I only help collect in Rainbow Beach from the Breeze Caravan Park, Bill Watt’s, and our bins at 10 Tingira Close. If anyone else requires a bin please let me know.

A big thank you to all that drop in our bins, and to Wayne’s collection points in Tin Can Bay, very much appreciated.

Donations can be left at Arthur’s Dolphin Arcade Bakery, Lees Fishing, Snak Shak, Mitchells Fruit & Veg, Victory Hotel Bottle Shop, Shell Servo Rainbow Beach. Any coin donation is much appreciated.

Once again our bank details are BSB: 124047 A/C 22599186 – Rainbow Beach DroughtRunners.

Thank you all.

QCWA share Country Kitchens Joy

TWENTY-SIX CHILDREN of the Rainbow Beach Learning Community took part in learning how to make mini muffin pizzas with QCWA Country Kitchens Branch Facilitator, Gabriella.

The children thoroughly enjoyed this activity because they each made their own pizzas, with choice of toppings. Children can easily make these pizzas at home with some supervision.

The children took part in two more activities, one of which was learning to recognise the difference between ‘Sometimes Foods’ and ‘Everyday Foods,’ and the other was dragon fruit painting which was quite a popular activity. They were all given a certificate for ‘Making An Awesome Mini Pizza’.

The children were fascinated with the Country Kitchens display, especially with finding out about how much sugar there is in many drinks. Did you know that there are almost 17 teaspoons of sugar in a 600 mL bottle of Coca Cola?

In May we combined our monthly Hoy event with the Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea. Thank you very much to all who came along, for wearing yellow and blue, and for your generous donations in support of this very worthy cause.

July’s Hoy has been cancelled as the Bowls Club was pre-booked. Hoy will resume on Wednesday 16 August.

Our members had fun with the children at the Tin Can Bay P-10 State School’s Under Eights Fun Day. At our stall the children were able to take part in star fruit painting, bean bag tossing, and guessing the weight of the rockmelon.

Aleks, our QCWA Country Kitchens Buddy from Brisbane, with assistance from Wendy and Gabriella held a Country Kitchens Hands on Nutrition Workshop focusing on how to Health-aSize a recipe. Eleven branch members took part in the workshop which was held at our Meeting Room in Whiting Street, Tin Can Bay.

While Aleks spoke about how to modify recipes

to make them healthier, we sampled the rainbow frittata muffins she had prepared for us earlier. Two groups of ladies each made a chicken stir fry, another group the ‘Light and Crunchy Coleslaw’ and another the ‘Stove Top Apple and Pear Crumble’.

Then came the fun part, we all got to eat a lovely lunch.

We have completed the last of the five QCWA Country Kitchens Back to Basic Cooking series of workshops with the students of the Tin Can Bay P-10 State School. For the Country Kitchens message ‘Sit Less, Move More’, we had the students planting pineapples and chillies in the school garden.

At the end of the workshop, the Principal Daman, Trish the teacher, and her assistants were given a certificate of thanks for their support. The students were given a certificate of participation and a goodie bag.

We are looking forward to working with you all again next term.

In early June, branch members got together to plant two fruit trees at our cottage in Whiting Street, Tin Can Bay. The QCWA is still celebrating its centenary and branches all across Queensland are encouraged to plant trees in recognition of this milestone.

Quilters Plan Friendship Day

SAVE THE DATE: The Tin Can Bay Quilters wish to advise of an advance notice of a Friendship Day which will be held on Saturday 20 April 2024. Ideas to be implemented are a quilt challenge, a quilt to be raffled, and hopefully some vendors to tempt us to buy more fabric.

Although the Tin Can Bay Quilters meet every Tuesday from 9am, it will be put to members to extend our time from finishing at 12 noon to 2pm. This was after a successful trial recently. We meet at the Community Hall Complex, Amity Place, Tin Can Bay.

The first of our photos this month is a great idea to reduce your fabric stash. The quilt was shown by Robyn Salmon, and the effect can be obtained by using a wedge ruler.

The second photo is of two table runners made by Jo Page. The large version would be suitable to dress up a bed as well as for a very large table.

Any enquiries regarding our group can be made by contacting Lesley on 0490 012 271.

Top: Beautiful table runners made by Jo.

Fun Days of

International Joke Day - 1 July

International Joke Day is not just a day for you to prove to everyone how funny you are, it is the perfect day for you to share laughs and to put a smile on people’s faces, including your own.

Whether you prefer to share jokes or you like to listen to them, this is a day that is all about smiling, laughing, and having fun.

As they say, laughter is the best medicine!

How to Celebrate

• Simply tell some jokes to a coworker or friend, or a stranger on the street, whoever seems to need the most hilarity in their day.

• Invite your friends over for a joke-telling party! Take turns telling jokes or reading them out of a joke book or online source.

• Visit a comedy club and listen to a professional (or wannabe pro) tell jokes for a night of fun or watch recorded live performances online or on old-school DVD.

Jokes

What do you call a couple of chimpanzees sharing an Amazon account?

PRIME-mates.

How much did the man sell his dead batteries for?

Nothing, they were free of charge.

Did you hear the rumor about the butter? Never mind, I shouldn’t spread it.

What do you call bears with no ears?

B–

My dog used to chase people on a bike a lot. It got so bad, finally I had to take his bike away.

Did you know there’s a day to celebrate just about everything? Here’s a few for July:

Teddy Bears Picnic Day - July 10

This day was created based on the popular song of the same name The Teddy Bears’ Picnic.

The song is a classic one, written to the tune of a song composed in 1907 by American John W. Bratton. The lyrics were added later, in 1930, by Jimmy Kennedy, a British songwriter.

Since the song became so popular, the day has evolved and is now celebrated by families in countries all over the world, enjoying the simple pleasure of a picnic with their favourite stuffed beings.

How to Celebrate

• Host a teddy bears picnic with family and friends either in a park, on the beach, in your backyard, or even in the living room if the weather is unfavourable.

• Listen to the teddy bears picnic song and the many versions recorded over the years.

• Research the wonderful art of teddy bear making and the many different versions of this cuddly toy.

National Lamington Day -

23 July

At over a century old, the lamington was named after the Governor of Queensland, Lord Lamington.

The story goes that he was having his favorite yellow sponge cake served for his guests when the maid-servant accidentally dropped the cake into melted chocolate. When his Lordship heard, he was the one who recommended them to roll the squares in coconut shavings to make them less messy for guests to eat with their tea.

This delicious treat was a kitchen mix-up that became Australia’s most famous culinary icon.

How to Celebrate

• Eat lamingtons, simple as that! Fingers, jam filled or topped with cream, just enjoy them with a cuppa for morning tea.

• Make lamingtons: Paul Tully’s True-Blue Delicious Aussie Lamington recipe

What you will need:

3 eggs

½ cup butter

½ cup powdered sugar

1 teaspoon of vanilla essence (if you only have extract use about 1 ½ teaspoons)

1 cup of self-rising flour

½ cup of milk

4 cups powdered sugar

1/3 cup cocoa powder

2 tablespoons butter

½ cup milk

4 tablespoons boiling water

3 cups shredded coconut

Do I enjoy making courthouse puns? Guilty.

I finally decided to sell my vacuum cleaner. All it was doing was gathering dust.

Someone stole my mood ring. I don’t know how I feel about that.

I coined a new word yesterday: Plagiarism.

Someone stole my Microsoft Office and they are going to pay. You have my Word.

Helvetica and Times New Roman walk into a bar. “Get out of here!” shouts the bartender. “We don’t serve your type.”

Method

Beat the eggs well, gradually adding the sugar until dissolved. Add the milk and vanilla essence and then stir in the self-rising flour. Next, whip the butter into the mixture. Pour the mixture into a cake tin or Lamington baking dish and bake in a moderate oven of 180 degrees Celsius for 35 minutes. Allow the cake to cool for at least 10 minutes and then stand for 24 hours preferably in the refrigerator, before applying the icing.

The Chocolate Icing:

Stir the cocoa and icing sugar vigorously in a large bowl, adding the milk, butter and boiling water, warming the chocolate mixture over a very low heat until it has a smooth creamy texture. Cut the sponge cake into equal squares about ½ in x ½ in and, using a fork or thin skewer, dip each piece into the chocolate mixture ensuring that the mixture is liberally and evenly applied. Dip each piece into the desiccated coconut, allowing the Lamingtons to cool on a wire tray or even on parchment paper for several hours.

Can Bay Country Club Golfing news

ALOT HAS BEEN happening at the Tin Can Bay Country Club golf course this month and it’s time to shout out some results and happenings for the past month.

Firstly, on a very sad note, our golf club secretary Helen Gordon has passed away due to serious illness. Helen was a tireless volunteer worker within our organisation and she will be very much missed keeping everybody calm and collected in her own way. Our best thoughts are constantly with you Helen.

Onto the golf. So much has happened at the club with the welcome of our new Greens Superintendent Craig Clarke who joined us in March 2023. Craig comes to us from McLeod Golf Club in Brisbane and as well as his greenkeeping qualifications he also brings along vast experience as a professional golfer for nine years.

He has purchased a house in Tin Can Bay and his family will be joining him soon. Craig is into camping, fishing and, naturally, golf during his spare time. From day one since he joined us, he has been head down getting our course in fantastic condition the likes of which have not been seen before.

Craig and his staff have done a wonderful job and fully deserve the many compliments that have been forthcoming from our members and visitors alike.

The month of June will see both the golf course and bowling greens begin to undergo some extremely major modifications with the commencement of contract work to install a totally new irrigation system within our grounds. The system is to be the latest state of the art computerised irrigation system and will ensure that our course and bowling greens will be in tip top condition all year round.

It should be noted that it is designed to use recycled water from the local sewerage plant and

not the town drinking water supply. So folks, every time you use the loo, your contribution(s) will be graciously accepted.

Oh yes there has been some thrilling golf here as well during May. Our mens’ championships were held over two weekends (to make up the four rounds). There were some great scores registered and this was highlighted by the final day’s titanic struggle between our two top players.

Richard Buczynsky and Alexander Emery fought it out to both be on an equal 300 strokes over the four days. This forced the pair into a play-off situation over the 6th, 7th and 8th holes. Richard eventually won out on the 8th to see him crowned Tin Can Bay Golf Club’s Men’s Champion golfer for 2023.

A very big congratulations to both Richard and Alex for providing us with some thrilling golf.

Other gross score winners were, in Division 2, Tony Hawthorn with Ray Harris as runner-u,p while young Steve McSweeney took out Division 3 with Phillip Manassa a close runner up.

Of course, handicaps still come into play in championship events. The nett score champions also played some terrific golf to achieve excellent outcomes.

Division 1 nett winner was Quinn Jones and runner-up to him was Bruce Willoughby. In Division 2 Terry Langley came out the winner over a hard finishing Neville Anderson. Third division went to Trevor Ansell with Mark Sellin as runner-up.

As you could imagine the tension during the playoff between Richard and Alex capped off a well organised and run event so a big shout out to our resident golf professional James Taylor for running the event, Greens Superintendent Craig Clarke and his staff for a well prepared course, Club Captain Mark Ryan for ensuring the event was a success, and Janet Reibel who did a fantastic job collating

the scores and producing accurate reports to determine the winners.

Speaking of James Taylor: our golf club hosted a ‘Come And Try Day’ for local kids to have a go at swinging a golf club. The FREE day was a success with 16 avid youngsters getting some expert tuition and just having a good time. I am led to believe a couple of the mums even had a hit.

Anyhow, from that day, as a progression a junior’s golfing program is commencing in about four weeks’ time. There will be expert tuition for each individual participant.

So now there is a good opportunity to hook a kid on golf. It’s a non-contact sport the whole family can join in and have some fun.

For further information and details contact our golf professional James Taylor or his staff on 0409 727 577.

Before I finish this article, it would be remiss of me not to mention the upcoming Pro-Am event coming up on 4 July. It is planned that each player will get to play with a golf professional in their group.

So make sure you book your spot in our Pro-Shop using the contact number above. There’s some big prizes up for grabs and I think playing spots will fill up fast.

A History of Wide Bay Dragons

Bundaberg Regatta 2023 and a Little Wide Bay Dragon History

IN BEAUTIFUL Queensland winter, the four Wide Bay dragon boat teams met on Bundaberg’s Burnett River for the Bundaberg Regatta over the weekend of 17 and 18 June.

This is the first of the Wide Bay Series of dragon boat regattas for the year. The series will continue with the Hervey Bay, 1770, and Cooloola regattas to follow. The last in the series is a two-day event held in our own beautiful Tin Can Bay.

You might remember that the Cooloola Regatta includes our own exciting Diamond Dash. The Bundaberg team took out the 2022 event beating long-time rivals 1770. Our Cooloola team performed well but didn’t come home winners. Teams all enjoyed a day of spirited competition along with friendship and fun that is the essence of dragon boat racing.

Cooloola Dragon Boat Club

Cooloola Dragon Boat Club started in 2003, with a small number of enthusiastic Tin Can Bay residents. At the start, the team was given invaluable assistance from the Chinese Gold Coast club who

generously lent the fledgling club a boat.

In 2004, with assistance from the Te Waka Club, Cooloola organised a ‘Come and Try’ day and membership rose from 24 to 31 by the end of March.

The next big step for the club was its first regatta which was held in July 2004. From that time on, the waters of Tin Can Bay have been a regular meeting place for dragon boat clubs from across Queensland.

In 2010 the inaugural Wide Bay Series was held between the four clubs. The series has been a great success with much fun, friendly competition and camaraderie. This is a must-see event when it returns to Tin Can Bay in September.

1770 Dragon Boat Club

In 2009 the sailing club at 1770 was donated a wooden 20-person dragon boat called Cameron. At first the dragon boat was purely used for sunset and fun paddling on the beautiful waters of Round Hill Creek.

Then it decided to run a joint club for both sailing and dragon boating. With very little knowledge of dragon boating a few dedicated people started having sessions mainly for fitness, fun, and friendship. With the backing of Bendigo Bank, a ‘Come and Try’ day was held and more people became involved.

Eventually the sailing and dragon boat clubs separated and the 1770

Dragon Boat Club was born. The club became affiliated with Dragon Boat Queensland in 2010 and over the years it has grown, sometimes having as many as 60 members. The club now has two 20-person dragon boats as well as a 10-person dragon boat.

Hervey Bay Dragon Boat Club

Hervey Bay Dragon Boat Club was formed as an intra-club of the Hervey Bay Boat Club on 29 April 2009. Ed Gibson, the General Manager of the Hervey Bay Boat Club gathered a small group to form an inaugural dragon boat committee.

Under the guidance of the Brisbane River club from whom their first boat was purchased, a ‘Come and Try’ day was held. Since then, the club has gone ahead in leaps and bounds and is now a major part of the Wide Bay dragon boating community. Hervey Bay hosts its own regatta each year and participates as part of the Wide Bay Warriors team at the National Titles.

The club is inclusive with members aged 8 to 81. One of the juniors has also competed in the World Championships. Team members recently paddled in the Ord River marathon seven years after the club’s first experience of this amazing event.

Bundaberg Dragon Boat Club

The Bundaberg club has a long association with sufferers and survivors of breast cancer. One of Bundaberg’s members, Don, approached the local Breast Cancer Survivors Group because he knew there were close ties with survivors and dragon boating and so the club began.

The survivors began paddling as the Dragons Abreast Team, affectionately known as the ‘Pinkies’. Subsequently a sporting team, the Bundaberg Dragon Boat Club, was formed with a blend of pinkies and sports members.

As the sport grew, and competition was getting stronger, the Wide Bay Dragon Boat Championships Regattas between Cooloola, Hervey Bay, 1770, and Bundaberg were established. The series is widely attended by the Wide Bay members and is always looked forward to with much excitement.

An exceptionally strong bond has now developed between the clubs. As a result of those regattas, we now compete as a combined team ‘Wide Bay Warriors’ at many of the Southern Queensland Club Regattas and the annual State Titles at Lake Kawana.

CDBC 20th Anniversary

Don’t forget the Cooloola Dragon Boat Club’s 20th anniversary is rapidly approaching. All members past and present are welcome to attend the event at the Tin Can Bay Yacht Club on Saturday 1 July. It is sure to be a good night with music, reminiscence, and lots of fun.

Tin Can Bay Fishing Club News

THE WEATHER recently has been favourable for fishing and as such club members have been spending a bit of time on or near the water. There have been plenty of fish around with whiting, flathead, squid, and mud crabs keeping our members busy in the bay.

At our monthly fishing competition presentation and social event in early June it was pleasing to see Life Member Jim George take out the

Rainbow Beach TIDE TIMES

monthly competition prize with a 101cm cobia.

For a change club members Kevin Armstrong and John Blackman organised a casting competition where two $25 gift cards from our sponsors The Chandlery Bait and Tackle and a $50 note were up for grabs. There was a fair amount of sledging and not a lot of skill displayed on the day, but fun was had by all.

It was no surprise that Marquis Chapman took out the only prizes

on the day. We are planning to feature the casting competition on a regular basis at presentation days.

At the time of writing this article our fishing activities subcommittee has several events lined up for July. A combined kayak and boating trip (put off last month due to bad weather) and a beach fishing event at The Oaks, Rainbow Beach with a social get together on the conclusion of each event.

The sub-committee is also working on a Big Squid Competition which may end up being run in August.

POINT (FRASER ISLAND)

WADDY POINT (FRASER ISLAND)

We have now received the funding from the Department of Fisheries and Agriculture under their Queensland Community Fishing Grants Program 2022-23. We expect to run both adult and junior training days using these funds sometime in late July/August.

Numbers will be limited to 40 in total across both categories, bookings will not be taken until the dates have been set so keep an eye on our Facebook page for dates.

See you on the water.

DRY JULY is a fundraiser that encourages you to go alcoholfree to raise funds for people affected by cancer. The funds raised provide invaluable services for cancer patients, and their families and carers.

Taking a month off from alcohol consumption also has great health benefits*, such as sleeping better, having more energy and of course, no hangovers! (*Note: heavy drinkers or people dependent on alcohol should consult with their GP before signing up for Dry July.)

The Dry July Foundation began back in 2008 when three mates decided to take a break from alcohol and chose the month of July to

abstain, coining the phrase ‘Dry July’. They also wanted to raise funds for a cause close to their hearts, so they asked friends and family to sponsor them.

Hoping to raise $3,000 to purchase a television for their local hospital’s waiting room, the campaign was a huge success. The first Dry July ended up raising a whopping $250,000!

By signing up to Dry July you have the choice to donate funds directly to the Dry July Foundation or choose from a number of specific cancer causes. For instance, I have chosen to support Bowel Cancer Australia this year.

You can do it solo, create or join a team, or get your workplace involved.

SUNDAY 23 to Sunday 30 July is DonateLife Week.

If you have made the decision to be an organ donor it’s important to let your family know your wishes. Even if you have registered either through the DonateLife website or your Medicare app, ultimately it is your next of kin who makes the final decision.

Organ, eye, and tissue donation saves lives, restores health, and improves the quality of life for thousands of Australians each year.

But did you know that only 2% of people who die in hospital each year can be considered for organ donation? One organ donor can save the lives of up to 7 people and help many more through eye and tissue donation.

Some statistics on organ donation:

• A person must die in a hospital in specific circumstances, in an ICU or ED, as organs need to be functioning well to be considered for transplantation.

• Only around 2% of people who die in Australian hospitals meet the criteria required to be an organ donor.

• In 2022, around 1,400 people (of the 80,000 people who died in Australian hospitals) died in a way where organ donation could be considered.

• Requests to families for donation were made in 1,300 cases.

• Of this, 701 families said yes to donation in the hospital –representing a national consent rate of 54% – with 454 people becoming organ donors.

• With only a small number of potential donors, increasing consent is critical to increasing our donation rate.

There are around 1,800 Australians waitlisted for a transplant and around 14,000 additional people on dialysis – some of whom may need a transplant.

Each year, the DonateLife Week campaign aims to not only encourage people to register to be an organ donor, but to have the conversation with loved ones so their wishes may be honoured.

The 2 asks for Australians this DonateLife Week are:

1. Could you donate one minute to give someone a lifetime? Register now at donatelife.gov.au or with just 3 easy taps in your Medicare app.

2. Don’t forget to tell your family that you want to be a donor, someone’s life may depend on it.

Indian Myna Bird Trapping Support

The Indian Myna bird is an extremely aggressive and territorial bird that out-competes natives for food, water, and shelter and is also hazardous to property as they nest in roof cavities causing fire hazards and block downpipes with nests creating building water flooding issues.

If you see any Indian Myna’s then please report them to www.feralscan.org.au/mynascan which is an external to Council resource developed to help community members, pest controllers, and biosecurity groups to map sightings and the damage that myna birds cause.

Did you know that Council offers landholders advice and some support for trapping and removal programs? Contact Council if you would like to know more about the program or how to get involved.

Tin Can Bay P-10 State School

UniSC Excursion

On Wednesday 7 June, the Year 10 class embarked on a field trip to UniSC (University of the Sunshine Coast). The students chose various groups, encompassing subjects such as entrepreneurship, movement and nutrition, psychology, and law.

Throughout the day, students attended four sessions, delving into the workings of their respective subjects.

The business lecture was led by a highly inspiring, genuine, and enthusiastic professor, while the photography activity was creative and hands-on, allowing the students to highlight their artistic skills.

The students had a thrilling experience unravelling mysteries in the ‘how-to-get-away with murder’ investigation. The athletic movement activity was a hit as well, keeping them active and engaged throughout.

Students and teachers enjoyed a highly informative day and students have been praised for their positive attitude and exemplary behaviour.

Gympie Show Excursion

The annual Gympie Show school excursion for the Year 5/6 students took place in May. The show offered a unique opportunity for students to learn about agriculture, livestock and rural life, and engage in fun interactive activities.

They explored different exhibition areas where they saw farm animals such as cattle, sheep, pigs, and poultry and learned about their role in agriculture. The interactive sessions allowed students to ask questions, touch the animals, and develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for the hard work and dedication of those in the agricultural sector.

Additionally, students viewed displays and competitions related to horticulture, crops, gardening, and machinery providing them with information about sustainable farming practices and environmental conservation. Apart from the agricultural aspects, the show also offered demonstrations such as

wood chopping and woodwork, whip cracking, native animals, and safety.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the educational and exciting day out, allowing them to interact with their classmates and teachers outside the classroom environment.

Clay Creations

During lunch breaks at Tin Can Bay School, students from Prep to Year 10 are channelling their creativity through an engaging lunchtime activity – making clay creations.

Twice a week students gather with excitement and enthusiasm in the Art Room, under the guidance of teacher Mrs Masri, to unleash their imagination and artistic expression.

Mrs Masri’s eyes were sparkling as she recounted, “The response has been overwhelming to the activity from students across all year levels.

“Clay Creations allows students to tap into their creativity, develop fine motor skills, and foster a sense of pride in their work. We have a wonderful time!”

With their hands moulding clay and imaginations running wild, the students are turning ordinary lunch breaks into an artistic and thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Painted Honeyeater

THE PAINTED honeyeater is very particular with its diet, preferring mainly the fruit of mistletoe trees, which is why it moves and migrates as different species of mistletoe bloom.

It is mainly seen in Queensland and New South Wales west of the Great Dividing Range, through to northern Victoria.

During winter, painted honeyeaters migrate to north Queensland, around Cape York Peninsula, and eastern

areas of the Northern Territory.

Painted honeyeaters like to make their homes in dry, open forests and woodlands.

Both the male and female painted honeyeater build and shape the nest, which are cup-shaped and made from a variety of materials including fine roots, bark, and grass.

This beautiful bird is listed as vulnerable in several states and territories in Australia due to habitat loss from land-clearing.

Chappy CHAT

Learning Community

June sees the end of Term 2 for the Rainbow Beach Learning Community with our young people enjoying a wide range of activities including: a visit from the Bunnings team who helped us make two sturdy wooden and metal tables; cooking pizza muffins with Gabriella from the Tin Can Bay CWA; Spanish lessons with Aimee: emotional regulation sessions with Sherry; a visit from Isla and Paula of ANDARRA Wildlife Carers (who brought some very cute joeys for us to drool over) at our recent open day in conjunction with the Gympie Homeschooling Network; an excursion to a dairy farm at Goomboorian where the children had the opportunity to milk a beautiful Jersey cow, and Goomboorian Gold bee hives and honey factory with lunch at Sublime Brewery; plus our amazing camp at Aldershot reported on in the June Chappy Chat.

With all of these activities plus regular art lessons with Rainbow Beach ocean artist Mo Riggs and visits to the beach on Thursday afternoons with Sarah and Dean from Rainbow Beach Learn to Surf where they get the chance to snorkel, bodyboard, build sandcastles and make dams, they are ready for the holidays!

In Term 3 we are looking at creating a Cooloola Coast Guide for Families under the leadership of Kerry and Tyla that will help visitors learn about the best places to visit and activities in the area from a child’s point of view. We are hoping to get this publication printed and have it for sale in local shops and if any local businesses are interested in advertising, please let us know.

Other activities will include a ‘come and try day’ at the Tin Can Bay Golf Club, a fishing day at Inskip Point where we will be inviting families from the Gympie Homeschooling Network, an opportunity to meet Councillor Jess Milne from the Gympie Council, Gareth and Kimberlee visiting from the Gympie Library with some of their fabulous toys, Elisa will be sharing about her home country and helping us cook amazing Italian food, and Spanish, sewing, and emotional regulation sessions will continue.

2023 Bush Dance – mark Saturday 16 September in your diary!

We would love to see you at the 2023 Bush Dance which is happening at the Community Centre on Saturday 16 September, again featuring Flashjack who helped make last year’s event so much fun.

Dancing with band members calling out the different moves will happen between 6pm and 8pm, with hot and cold food available from 5pm and a delicious supper from 8pm to 9pm. Tickets are available from the Community Centre office or from Tyla on 0432 651 722 at $40 for a family, $15 for adults, and $10 for children.

Grazing platters will also be available and can be pre-ordered from Tyla with platters for 2-3 people costing $25 and platters for 4-6 people costing $35.

Community Pantry

The Community Pantry is covered for insurance and governance by Pindari Life Ltd – a local charity that supports many activities including the King’s Cup coffee van in Gympie, camps, and outdoor activities for young people at risk. We greatly

appreciate their wisdom and organisational skills.

We are distributing around 40 hampers worth between $50 & $60 each fortnight for only $10 to anyone who needs one – a pension or healthcare card is not required. Regular items include fresh fruit, veggies, and pantry staples such as cereal, pasta, and tinned veggies from Foodbank, and also a huge variety of items from Woolworths Cooloola that are end of line or near their best before date.

To order a hamper for yourself or someone who needs a helping hand, contact us by text to 0413 135 867 or hop onto the Rainbow Beach Community Pantry Facebook page and send us a message.

Rainbow Beach Goes to the Movies!

On Saturday 12 August, the Community Pantry will be running the second CoolaFlix night at the Community Centre, featuring ‘Homeward Bound – the Incredible Journey’ originally released in 1993. We will be selling popcorn, hot and cold drinks, lollies and yummy treats. This movie is well-known as one of the best family movies of all time and features the voices of Michael J Fox and Sally Field. Bring your family along for a wonderful evening that will help raise funds so that we can continue to help local families.

Congratulations to Fiona and the Rainbow Beach Community Centre team for heading up this initiative of a monthly movie to enjoy without the expense of travelling into Gympie.
