CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG (cont) As I write, a young Danish footballer, Christian Eriksen, is in hospital after collapsing very publicly on the pitch during Denmark’s opening Euro 2020 game against Finland. Thankfully his condition is said to be stable as a result of the wonderful immediate medical response. Whilst this recognises the important role of rapid CPR and use of defibrillators, it is also essential to note that the majority of collapses and sudden cardiac arrests happen at home when people are alone, resting or asleep. Undoubtedly proactive screening can and does save lives, as our events at Garstang have mercifully verified, and we are so thankful for that. CRY’s own research has shown that testing young people between the ages of 14 and 35 has lead to an 89% reduction in Young Sudden Cardiac Deaths (YSCD) which is

an absolutely outstanding achievement, but what about the agony and suffering of that remaining 11%? We understand that no screening programme is ever going to be foolproof but, as a family who have lost someone so precious to this silent killer and have no answers as to why he died, we feel further research is unquestionably vital in reducing this figure too and hope it won’t be too long before the fund is in a position to give some practical support towards CRY’s valiant efforts. We’d love to know your thoughts on this so if you see us out and about stop and have a chat or contact us on the details below.
