ROTARY CLUB (cont) around 20 members of the Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs. A total of 232 tickets had been sold and the prizes drawn were: 11 at £10, eight at £25 and one @ £500. The winning £500 ticket was 035. Further details are available from members of the Rotary Club. The draw raised £696 for our charity account and will be used for community, youth and international projects over the coming year. SOROPTIMISTS Women Inspiring Action, Transforming Lives A month based around blossoming – we are gradually emerging back into the real world and everything seems to have a floral connection. Club Outing Our first trip out since lockdown and what a memorable occasion, not least because of the venue, Gresgarth Hall, Caton and all it had to offer. The sun shone (sort of), the laughter flowed and the gardens were stunning. The group photo doesn’t really do justice to the enjoyment of the trip. We were

all glad to be back to (socially distanced) face-to-face escapades – and for a chance to meet our two newest members in real life! This was an excellent venue for our first trip out as Gresgarth has a very big Sequoia tree (alongside a relatively small Soroptimist). In 1921, the first Soroptimist club, Alameda County was formed in California with over 80 business and professional women from in and around the city of Oakland. Their first project was to ‘Save the Redwoods’ – the great ancient trees which were being felled and the club lobbied the legislature, taking on powerful lumber companies and winning public support which resulted in a major portion of the forest being set aside as protected land that still exists today.
