OVER WYRE ART SOCIETY Our Autumn Tea was hugely successful. There were 30 paintings on show. Garstang Ukulele Band entertained us whilst afternoon tea was being served. Thank you Knott End businesses for raffle prizes and all the helpers who worked hard in raising over £500 to be used for future professional tutors and new art equipment. Last month we welcomed Bob Goldsboro who painted a landscape in oils in his easy manner yet at the same time passing on useful advice such as start with big brushes, don’t put in detail early on, consider the tint, tone and richness of colour and use a large palette for easier paint mixing.

OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE The reputation of general practice is currently suffering following a barrage of inappropriate and misleading media coverage. Some sources insinuate that general practice is closed, that face to-face consultations are not available or that GP practices are somehow not pulling their weight within general practice. Here at Over Wyre Medical Centre, we feel that this is untrue and insulting. Prior to the Covid pandemic, when face-toface consultation was the first port of call, the system was managing but demand was high

18

and patients would wait between two and four weeks for an appointment. This was not a perfect system. The pandemic has pushed us all towards remote working. We have seen benefits to this and recognise this as an opportunity to work more efficiently. We are able to see more patients in the best way possible. This is always the highest priority. All requests for same-day appointments are clinically triaged. If the doctor can manage the clinical problem remotely and in a shorter period of time, they will do. If the doctor needs to arrange for a faceto-face assessment, this will be arranged. Routine problems, such as discussion of nonurgent test results or long-standing clinical problems, are allocated an appropriate time slot. Although this change has been forced by

OVER WYRE MEDICAL (cont) the pandemic, we see this as progress and a more efficient way to deal with demand at this time. We continue to see patients face-to-face in consultation, but we clinically assess which patients need this. We have never closed our doors to patients, even at the height of the first wave in Spring of 2020. We have delivered 20,000 vaccinations to our local population, continued all medical care as directed by NHS England and we adapt and move forward aiming to provide the best care for our patients. Our staff have had an unprecedented year and we are proud of our entire team. Breast Examination I was approached by the manager of Moss Side Nursery in Stalmine, Laura Larsen, to deliver some teaching to her staff about breast examination. Some of the staff there

had been touched by the sad death of Sarah Harding in recent months and Laura was keen to promote breast awareness amongst her staff. I thought this was an excellent idea and the staff seemed to enjoy the teaching. All ladies (and some gentlemen, of course) should develop a monthly habit of checking their breasts. There is a wealth of information out there aiming to teach you how to examine your breasts properly. Breast Cancer UK and England.nhs.uk have good information on their websites. Essentially, it is important to ‘look, feel and move’. Firstly, look from the front and from the side in a good light. Skin changes, changes in contour, changes in the appearance of the nipple are all important and should be reviewed by a doctor. Secondly, feel the breast tissue with the first three fingers to identify any new lumps or bumps. Think of

the breast as a clock and work your way round systematically. Remember to feel all the way up to the collar bone and around as far as the armpit. You may prefer to do this in a sitting or a lying position, although ladies with larger breasts may find this easier in a supine position. Lastly, it’s time to move. Lift the arms into the air and check for changes in the contour of the breast. Then put your hands on your hips and push down to tighten the muscles of the chest. This will push the breasts out and you can use this technique to identify any other changes. Whilst your arms are up, take the opportunity to have a feel in the armpits. Any lumps here are equally as important and any noticeable changes should be reviewed by a doctor.

Over the summer many of you may have seen, and indeed supported, Sarah’s wayside stall for CRY in Catterall. It’s been a lovely little community venture with goods and produce being dropped off at the stall as well as purchased! A grand total of £432 has been sent to the fund from this project and we’d like to say a huge thank you both to Sarah, who we know has spent many hours tending it, and to everyone who has buoyed her endeavours. The season of mists and mellow fruitfulness is now well and truly underway for Matt’s fund and huge thanks are due to everyone who joined us in marking the season with our bountiful ‘Shades of Autumn’ pop-up shop. Colourful local produce and tasty home-made products helped make the day successful with £180 raised. The same day we were delighted to receive two anonymous

CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG (cont) donations, taking the total that day to £980, enabling almost 20 young people to have free vital heart screenings at Garstang. Thank you very much for your wonderfully generous support. Another huge surprise occurred in October when one of our lovely regular supporters sent us a fantastic personalised mosaic picture that she had made as a tribute to Matt. Lovingly created by hand from 16,000 minute sugar cane pixels it depicts some of the things that characterised Matt’s life from a tiny tot to the day he died. How I wish you could all see it! We were absolutely thrilled to bits to receive it and, although we know she wouldn’t want a fuss, we want to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts for this much-appreciated gift. Alice, we have no way of ever repaying this generous act of thoughtfulness. Talking of gifts our Christmas pop-up shop

GARSTANG & DISTRICT LIONS Donations The members of Garstang & District Lions have agreed to provide a sum of £200 sponsorship in response to a request for support for a runner in the Manchester half marathon with the proceeds going to a charity for the homeless. Our usual generous sum has now been transferred to the Lions Club International Fund to allow them to provide help and support to both current and future world wide emergencies. Fylde Women’s Aid have a continued need for new clothing items (babies, small children or ladies), new toys, new cosmetic or new toiletries and this appeal is ongoing with our collection point being the Resources Centre (old Liberal Club on Bridge Street). We have just completed another delivery but are planning one more soon. The Covid pandemic has created an increase in the overall numbers being supported both nationally and locally and this does include more male recipients too. Events & Activities Members of the Lions managed to park well over 3,000 cars in two very busy days at the recently held Lancashire Game and Country Festival in Scorton. Our next big event is the annual Community Bonfire and Fireworks display on Sat 6th Nov. The bonfire will be lit at 7:00pm and the spectacular firework display will begin at 7:30pm. Admission to the High Street car park will be from 6:30pm onwards. Prices have been held at very low levels at £4 for adults (over 16) and £1 for school-age children up to 16 years and with pre - school being free. Cash payments only.

GARSTANG & DISTRICT LIONS (cont) We are also planning to support the road closure and traffic management necessary to facilitate the local Remembrance Day Service arrangements on Sun 14th Nov. As we have done before, we will be parking the cars of entrants and officials at Myerscough College on Sun 5th Dec to allow their annual ten mile run to take place. Very reluctantly we have taken the decision to cancel the annual Christmas community lunch provided for vulnerable adults and their carers because of the continued threat of Covid. However we are still looking to put something else in place and more information will be given later. General Our club continues to grow and another new member was inducted at our last meeting. THE INNER WHEEL CLUB (cont) and to foster international understanding. Interestingly, nowhere is the word ‘fundraising’ mentioned. In fact nothing could be further from the truth. Every Inner Wheel Club around the globe (we are an international organisation) chooses to fund raise for many good causes and are proud to do so. Whether the cause is a small local charity needing a little support or a global initiative requiring a massive effort, Inner Wheel will always be proactive. Recently, 12 members of our own club here in Garstang attended the District International Rally where we learned more of the work of AQUABOX, a Rotary charity founded by the Rotary Club of Wirksworth in Derbyshire. The district international chairman presented the proceeds from various stalls to a representative from the charity. r Open fo & s s busine g in r e adh y t fe a s to es n li guide

At the same rally over 100 Rotary shoeboxes were handed to the organisers of this wonderful charity. Rotary members had filled these robust boxes with gifts and donations for distribution to Eastern Europe, hopefully in time for Christmas but not exclusively so. A shoebox is not just for Christmas. A gift is always welcome by those who have so little, whatever the time of year. The club is now looking forward to more fundraising (and fun) for Vision Aid International at the end of November. If there are any ladies who feel they would like more information about the Club or indeed the wider Organisation please be in touch. Mary Mason t: 01995 603 447 e: marytmason@icloud.com

LOCAL BOOK LAUNCH Tues 16th Nov, 2:00pm
Pilling Village Hall Residents are invited to a book launch this month, which will be a bit of a memory jogger for many.
Author and former Garstang Courier journalist Angela Norris (nee France) is launching her
book ‘That’s News To Me!’ about her early career as a reporter on the local newspaper in the 1970s and early 80s.

LOCAL BOOK LAUNCH (cont)

IT’S ALL IN THE MIND

During that time she covered big stories (eg the opposition to the Pilling gas terminal plan, the devastating Wyre floods of the 1970s and the blaze which destroyed the Garstang CCM factory as well as the more regular goings on. Along with two other local journos of the time (Pat Seed and Tess Pickford), Angela had a ringside seat at local events.

Look into my eyes, what do you see? Oh the caricature of a mesmeric hypnotist may well be attractive to writers and film makers but the reality is that a skilled hypnotherapist can be a life changing and positive influence for many.

At the book launch Angela will recount some of her memories of the stories she covered. Angela, who lived in Pilling for many years before moving to Preesall, will be accompanied by her husband, Keith (son of a former Pilling village bobby). No need to book. Entry is free and the village hall café will be open for refreshments.
Note: current Covid prevention rules will be in force / wearing a face mask is optional.
 Anthony Coppin

What is hypnotherapy? Well, if you break it down to a literal meaning it translates to sleep therapy, however, you are not asleep but more in a trance or deep concentration/ meditation, and it is nothing like it is portrayed in the media. All hypnotherapy is self-hypnosis. This may sound a little strange, but it is true. Let me explain a little clearer; for those of you that drive, have you ever driven to a destination and suddenly wondered how you got there, because you cannot remember anything of the journey. Have you ever been doing something and suddenly wondered how you did it, again, because you cannot remember

IT’S ALL IN THE MIND (cont) doing it. You have been under self-hypnosis during these events. Your conscious mind has been thinking of other things whilst your subconscious part has been keeping you safe and getting on with things. The power of the mind is so strong and complex, no-one yet fully understands its complexities or range of abilities. It is estimated, and recognised in many circles of medicine, that we only use about 10% of our brains’ (minds’) abilities. This means that 90% of our mind is what we would call the subconscious, and this is the bit that deals with the parts of you that need to work without having to think about it, your breathing, your heart-beat – all your normal bodily functions you take for granted. Hypnotherapy is a marvellous and very powerful form of help that can deal with situations that the conscious mind has difficulty processing. It’s uses are almost

boundless. Don’t get the wrong idea; it cannot cure cancer or the common cold and it can’t cure a broken limb or a physical disability. It is not recommended that you should stop any prescribed medicines in favour of hypnotherapy, and it would be wrong to suggest that. Hypnotherapy should be used as complimentary to any medical issues, not a replacement. If you want to try hypnotherapy to help with any existing medical condition always talk this over with your GP first. In hypnotherapy you are always in control, you are aware of everything going on around you and you will never do anything that you don’t want to, or wouldn’t agree with, in a fully conscious state. A hypnotherapist is there to guide you through the proceedings with suggestions that are directed at the subconscious. The therapy can be used for many things, and this is a list

of just a few, and is by no means a complete list: anxiety, depression, confidence building, sports, natural birthing, phobias of any kind, smoking cessation, weight management, fears that maybe aren’t quite in the phobia category yet, pain management both acute and chronic, concentration, impulse control, habit breaking, addiction, substance abuse, stress management, recovering from trauma or grief, PTSD, past issues long forgotten that still have an effect.

Trefoil Guild is an international organisation of girlguiding for adults. Many of our members have been leaders, some are still active guiders but many of our members have never been involved in the past. All are welcome.

The list goes on and on.

If you are looking for a new challenge and a group to join after these difficult times do not hesitate, just give me a call. We have six guilds in Lancashire West to choose from. We are happy to say that all of our Guilds are back meeting ‘face-to-face.

There are no drugs involved in hypnotherapy and there are no time limits to it, a good therapist can help you change your life for the better.

We had a most enjoyable visit to Waddow Hall near Clitheroe in October by coach for afternoon tea. Waddow is one of four guide centres in the UK.

When you release the power of your mind, you can make change happen.

CAT SMITH MP Lloyds Pharmacy I’ve had a lot of correspondence over the last few months about the difficulties some of you have had getting hold of your prescriptions from the chemist in Knott End. There are occasions when the pharmacy has been closed without warning and I’ve written to Lloyds to raise this with them. I highlighted both the high percentage of retirees in Knott End – many of whom are in receipt of life-saving medication, prescribed to prevent strokes and heart attacks - as well as a high percentage of families with young children who rely on the chemist being open. Many of you say you feel let down by the poor service and that you use the shop for nonprescription, over-the-counter medication and are unable to access pain relief etc when the chemist is closed due to staffing difficulties. Lloyds have been in touch with me to say they are truly sorry to read of the disappointing service you have been experiencing and ‘this is not the level of service we expect for any of our customers, and I can fully appreciate your concerns.’ Lloyds say the Knott End pharmacy went through a difficult period over the summer owing to the loss of a staff member. During the recruitment process to find a replacement, they employed locums to cover the branch. ‘Unfortunately, there were a range of factors influencing the availability of locums at the time, including: the summer holidays, the socalled ‘ping-demic’ and the UK wide shortage of qualified pharmacists. This led to a number of temporary and partial closures which may have disrupted the experience of patients accessing services at the time and for this we are truly sorry.’

Sea Bank House

A special home for special people Sea Bank House is a residential home for elderly people who are unable to live independently in their own homes. Or philosophy of care is based on the belief that it is the right of any resident in the home to be respected as an individual, and that everyone has the right to be allowed to live as full and active a life as both their mental and physical condition allows. We endeavour to provide an environment which is not only comfortable and homely, but gives the warmth and understanding normally associated with family care but supported by specialist equipment and well trained care staff. Needs are met maintaining personal dignity, privacy and encouraging independence where possible. Activities, passive and active are encouraged throughout the day by trained care staff under the guidance of the Home Manager. Each care plan takes into consideration the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs, in order to create a care plan that is relevant to individuals. Recognising, nurturing and encouraging the residents remaining skills and ability to communicate is or paramount importance to the quality of care given at Sea Bank House.

CAT SMITH MP (cont) They say the opening times at the Knott End pharmacy have improved since the start of September, after they successfully secured a new full-time pharmacist for the branch. They have also hired an additional three relief pharmacists to cover the Blackpool area. ‘Going forward, there should not be any recurring issues with the services patients in your constituency access on a regular basis.’ Please do get in touch with me if you have any further questions or concerns about the service. Speeding on Beechfield Ave, Preesall I’ve recently been in touch with the police regarding some concerns about speeding on Beechfield Avenue in Preesall. Beechfield Avenue is a 20mph residential road, which was last reviewed by the Lancashire Road Safety Partnership (LRSP) in October 2019 and was given an ‘Overall Low’ risk rating. As a result, the LRSP advise the community to consider options in the community toolkit for community approaches to reducing traffic speed. LRSP advise they will not reassess sites within three years unless there’s been major changes to the area.

CAT SMITH MP (cont) I also had the pleasure of visiting another family owned business last week - Farm Yard Ales on Gulf Lane in Cockerham. They make a selection of craft beer working with partners like Blackpool Football Club and amazing artists who design the cans. Farm Yard Ales can be found at Moss Edge Farm which has been in the Holmes Family for five generations. Steve is the sixth but he decided to buck the trend and start his own micro-brewery instead of running a farm. With support from parents, friends, the Rural Development Programme and the NatWest, Farm Yard Ales was created and they built everything up from the ground by themselves including the steel-framed building and the sloping floors, all carefully designed to house a 2,000 litre brew plant. The brewery now has 10 of these 2,000 litre tanks showing the progress made in the last few years. Cat Smith MP t: 01253 490440 e: cat.smith.mp@parliament.uk

Covid Vaccination Boosters I know some residents have now received the Covid booster and this is encouraging. I am confident our GP surgeries and the NHS will continue to roll the booster out effectively. I would also like to thank all involved from the NHS and all volunteers who help the process run smoothly and safely. Passport Delays In April’s article I brought up that anyone hoping to travel abroad once the Covid travel restrictions were eased might find it helpful to check whether their passport needs to be renewed. I just want to re-iterate this advice because there has been a significant increase in applications and this has had a knock-on effect so, if your passport needs to be renewed, please think well ahead. Processing times for applications is currently ten weeks, so please do bear this in mind. PREESALL FIRE STATION Welcome to our sixth editorial for Focus Magazine where we give you an insight into your community fire station. Recently the crew have been to kitchen fires, fires in the open and assisted North West Ambulance Service by gaining entry in to property where needed. All members of the crew live or work within five minutes of the fire station and respond immediately when their pager sounds. Our recruitment campaign has started again. Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) is encouraging people to step forward and explore the opportunities the Fire and Rescue Service can offer to people who have a passion for helping their local community by becoming on-call firefighters. LFRS is looking

to recruit 48 on-call firefighters throughout October, at stations across Lancashire. Working as an on-call firefighter means being involved in a wide range of activities in your local area, from responding to emergency calls to carrying out work in local communities, supporting their needs or providing prevention advice to help keep them safe. In return the fire service can offer flexible work to fit around study, work and family commitments. First class training and development opportunities are provided and you are given a chance to make a difference in your local community. Working in the fire service means you become part of a close-knit team, earn extra money and the full and ongoing training allows you to develop a broad range of transferable work and life skills.

Once chosen, our head boy and girl along with their deputies, lead our school council. They meet as a group every three weeks and discuss aspects of school life. This may be about areas they would like to change or improve or planning ideas for a fundraising event. This half-term, they are focusing on developing playtime games and activities – a very important part of the school day! We encourage all of our pupils to have a voice and to contribute towards decision making. As a school family we are all committed to school improvement.

Through the values of kindness, compassion and service, we teach our pupils to care for and look after others; especially those less fortunate than ourselves. At our harvest festival last month, our families donated non-perishable items to the Preesall and Knott-End Help Group so that we can help to support people in our local community. In the coming months, we will be fundraising for Children in Need and taking part in the toy service at St Oswald’s Church. As well as donating, we help our pupils to understand why this is important and also to be thankful for what we have.

We are hoping that we will be able to invite families in to come along and help too! Our allotment is starting to be planted with winter veg and bulbs, pupils have also been out planting daffodil bulbs around our new track – they will look amazing in springtime. We will be looking after some planters at Preesall Park which we will be planting in soon – pupils have some great ideas about what we can put in them; thank you Preesall Town Council for asking us – we are very excited to be helping in our community.

Before we finished for half term, we had a visit from a Syrian refugee who came to meet with classes in the juniors to talk about their life before moving to the UK. Classes were able to ask questions and have a real insight into what life is like for a young person growing up in these conditions. We are always very thankful to visitors and volunteers who come along and enrich our pupils learning.

Special Appeals Sox Sox is the sweetest cat with the gentlest nature. She came into our care due to no fault of her own. Sadly, her previous owners had a change in circumstances which meant she couldn’t stay in her previous home. A few days into her stay with us, the staff noticed that Sox was having breathing difficulties so she was later booked into the vets for tests. A scan revealed that Sox was suffering with a diaphragmatic hernia and

She adores affection and enjoys the company of humans. She will head bump you and shows her gratitude by purring and dribbling away. Sox would prefer that her new owners were home a bit more often. She is looking for a home where she will the only pet and following the hernia surgery, our vet has recommended that she is kept indoors. The thickened scarring on his ear flap has left him with a unique look. Adopters will need to closely monitor his ear and clean when necessary. Sterling is a more reserved yet friendly boy who loves to spend his days relaxing and having a snooze. He is a big food lover so this is a great way to build a relationship with him. With the help of some tasty treats and a good chin rub, he is soon making friends. As he has been used to the freedom of being outdoors, he is looking for a home where he can have safe access to outside away from main roads and railways.
