Sie steht auf einem Areal, das bereits im Mittelalter mit Befestigungsanlagen bebaut war: Die slawischen Schutzmauern aus Holz und Erde stammen aus der Zeit um 1050. Reste sind in der Westkurtine zu besichtigen. Als das Fürstengeschlecht der Askanier das Gebiet im 12. Jahrhundert übernahm, ließen sie den strategisch wichtigen Standpunkt mit einer Steinburg sichern. Mit der Entwicklung der Feuerwaffentechnik bot diese keinen Schutz mehr. So ließ der Brandenburger Kurfürst Joachim II. von 1560 bis 1594 mit der Zitadelle eine moderne Verteidigungsanlage errichten. Die eigens engagierten italienischen Architekten bezogen zwei Bauwerke der alten Burg mit ein: den sogenannten Juliusturm und den Palas. Heute ist die Zitadelle Kulturstandort und Geschichtsinsel: Historische Museen und Ausstellungen moderner Kunst laden Sie zu einem abwechslungsreichen Besuch in Spandau ein. Die öffentliche Zitadellenführung gibt Einblick in die bewegte Geschichte des Ortes und führt Sie durch die Jahrhunderte.
The Citadel is one of the most important and best preserved Renaissance fortresses in Europe. It stands on an area that was already covered with fortifications in the Middle Ages: the Slavic protective walls of wood and earth date from around 1050. Remains can be seen in the western courtyard. When the princely dynasty of the Ascanians took over the area in the 12th century, they had the strategically important position secured with a stone castle. With the development of firearms technology, this no longer offered any protection. Thus, from 1560 to 1594, Brandenburg’s Elector Joachim II had a modern defense system built in the form of the citadel. The specially hired Italian architects included two structures from the old castle: the so-called Julius Tower and the Palas. Today, the Citadel is a cultural site and an island of history: historical museums and exhibitions of modern art invite you to a varied visit to Spandau. The public guided tour of the citadel provides insight into the eventful history of the site and takes you through the centuries.
