Madeira Island Magazine celebra 45 anos dedicados a promover a ilha da Madeira. Desde a sua criação, em 1978 por Don Glen Sandy, a sua missão foi e continua a ser mostrar o nosso Arquipélago, as nossas gentes, a nossa história, os costumes e tradições, a natureza e o mar e tudo aquilo que temos de melhor para oferecer a quem nos visita.

Em cada edição, levantamos apenas a ponta do véu de tudo o que esta ilha tem para oferecer. Queremos que venha descobrir a Madeira em terra firme, viver as fantásticas experiências que temos para si, deslumbrar-se com a floresta Laurissilva, percorrer os trilhos do mar à montanha, as nossas levadas e os nossos percursos pedestres, e sobretudo, descobrir o porquê de sermos premiados repetidamente com o galardão de ‘Melhor Destino Insular do Mundo’.

Madeira Island Magazine celebrates 45 years dedicated to promoting Madeira Island. Since its creation in 1978 by Don Glen Sandy its mission has been and continues to be to showcase our Archipelago, our people, history, customs and traditions, nature and the sea and all the best that we have to offer those who visit us.

In each edition, we highlight just some of what the island has to offer. We want you to come and discover Madeira on land, live the fantastic experiences we have for you, marvel at the Laurissilva forest, walk along the trails from sea to mountain, our levada and footpaths and above

all discover why we’ve been repeatedly awarded the ‘Best Island Destination in the World’ prize.

We dedicate this celebration to the Madeirans who work hard every day in the art of welcoming the tourists who visit us and have the privilege of living in this Atlantic paradise.

ste é o festival que dá as boasvindas ao verão. Conta já com mais de 20 anos de existência e atrai muitos turistas e locais ao coração da cidade.

Acontece durante todo o mês de junho e, a cada sábado do mês, um espetáculo piromusical diferente ilumina os céus da baía do Funchal. Apesar de este ser o ponto forte do evento, o festival proporciona também várias atividades culturais e de animação ao longo do referido mês.

Cada espetáculo piromusical é da autoria de um país diferente e é avaliado por um júri que decide qual deles é o melhor na arte de criar uma perfeita

ligação entre a música e o fogo de artifício.

O show acontece durante 20 minutos e deixa todos de olhos postos no céu da Praça do Povo do Funchal.

Uma coisa é certa: noites quentes, boa disposição, brilho e animação não faltarão neste evento.

This festival welcomes summer with a bang! Running for over 20 years, it attracts many tourists and locals to the heart of the city.

The Festival takes place on the Saturdays during the month of June, with a different pyromusical show lighting

up the skies over the bay of Funchal. Although the fireworks are the highlight, the event also provides various cultural activities and entertainment throughout the month.

Each pyromusical show is put on by a different country and is evaluated by a jury that decides which one is the best in the art of creating a perfect link between music and fireworks.

The show takes place over 20 minutes and leaves everyone with their eyes on the sky at the Praça do Povo in Funchal.

One thing is for sure: warm nights, good vibes, brightness and entertainment will always be present at this event.

BOlO dE cErEJA

freguesia do Jardim da Serra é o berço das cerejeiras. Em sua honra acontece, entre 9 a 11 de junho de 2023, a Festa da Cereja, certame que reúne centenas de pessoas na localidade.

ingredientes

- 1 kg de cerejas

- 200 g de requeijão

- 6 colheres de sopa de leite

- 6 colheres de sopa de óleo de girassol

- 100 g de açúcar

- 1 colher de chá de raspa de limão

- 1 pitada de sal

- 300 g de farinha

- 2 colheres de chá de fermento em pó

- ½ colher de chá de canela

- 6 colheres de sopa de açúcar granulado

preparação

Depois de lavadas, cortam-se as cerejas e retiram-se-lhes os caroços. Mistura-se o requeijão com o açúcar,

o leite, o óleo, a raspa de limão e o sal. Polvilha-se este preparo com a junção da farinha e do fermento. De seguida, amassa-se e colocam-se as cerejas. A massa deve cozer cerca de 25 a 30 minutos. Por fim, aplica-se a canela e o açúcar granulado.

Nota: É aconselhável aquecer o forno e untar o tabuleiro ou a forma previamente.

The parish of Jardim da Serra is home to most of the cherry trees on the Island. The Cherry Festival takes place between 9th to 11th of June 2023, an event which brings together hundreds of people to honor the fruit.

- 1 kg cherries

- 200 g requeijão (curd cheese)

- 6 tablespoons of milk

- 6 tablespoons sunflower oil

- 100 g sugar

- 1 teaspoon lemon zest

- 1 pinch of salt

- 300 g flour

- 2 teaspoons baking powder

- ½ teaspoon cinnamon

- 6 tablespoons granulated sugar

preparing

After washing, cut the cherries and remove the stones. Mix the curd cheese with the sugar, milk, oil, lemon zest and salt. Sprinkle the flour and yeast into the wet ingredients. Then knead and add the cherries. The dough should bake for about 25 to 30 minutes. Finally, add the cinnamon and granulated sugar.

Note: It is advisable to heat the oven and grease the tray or tin beforehand.

No término do longo areal de 9km da ilha do Porto Santo, existe a belíssima Praia da Calheta com vistas deslumbrantes para o Ilhéu da Cal ou Ilhéu de Baixo, erguido mesmo em frente.

Provida de areia dourada e de formações geológicas interessantes, esta praia que se situa numa ponta da ilha, é um ponto de visita obrigatório.

Graças à sua localização, a praia da Calheta é menos procurada que as outras por ser a mais longínqua entre as praias distribuídas ao longo da Ilha do Porto Santo, porém, a beleza única das formações entrelaçadas entre o mar e a areia são inigualáveis.

Esta praia conta com instalações sanitárias, balneários, estacionamento e restauração próxima.

O Porto Santo celebra o seu 188º aniversário no dia 24 de junho.

With golden sand and interesting geological formations, this beach on the tip of the island is a must-see.

Due to its location, Calheta beach

is not as busy as the others, as it is the farthest beach on the Island, but the unique beauty of the formations intertwined between the sea and the sand is unmatched.

This beach has sanitary facilities, changing rooms, parking and nearby restaurants.

ste é o mais extenso e abundante curso de água formado no interior da ilha, no meio das montanhas e que deságua no oceano, é a chamada Ribeira da Janela. Este nome é proveniente de um pequeno ilhéu que se levanta na proximidade da foz desta ribeira e, que no seu cimo, apresenta uma saliência natural que faz lembrar uma janela.

Na verdade, contam-se ali três rochedos que se erguem no mar e que tornam o cenário absolutamente encantador: os Ilhéus da Rama, Ilhéu Alto e o Ilheuzinho.

Destes 3 ilhéus, o mais famoso tanto pela sua morfologia como pela sua história é o Ilhéu Alto, também conhecido como Ilhéu Comprido. Situa-se entre os outros dois ilhéus e tem cerca de 40 metros de altura, perto do cimo tem uma pequena abertura que se assemelha a uma janela. Foi a partir desta particularidade que a freguesia da Ribeira da Janela foi assim batizada.

O Ilhéu da Rama ou da Ruama, fica a cerca de 200 metros da costa, sendo o maior e aquele que apresenta alguma vegetação. Quanto ao Ilheuzinho, como o próprio nome indica, é o mais pequeno e é semelhante a um rochedo que fica mesmo junto à costa.

A Ribeira da Janela foi uma das localidades que serviu de palco para as gravações de Star Wars, que aconteceram em março de 2023. As paisagens soberbas da ilha da Madeira foram eleitas, pela primeira vez, para participar nesta saga de renome, que privilégio!

This is the longest and most abundant watercourse in Madeira. It is formed deep in the interior of the island, between the mountains and flows into the ocean. It was baptised “Ribeira da Janela” (window stream) which comes from the small islet that rises near the mouth of the river and has a natural window-like protrusion at the top.

In fact, there are three rocks that rise up from the sea and make the scenery absolutely enchanting: the Ilhéus da Rama, Ilhéu Alto and Ilheuzinho.

Of these 3 islets, the most famous both for its morphology and its history is the Ilhéu Alto, also known as the Ilhéu Comprido. It is located between the other two islets and is about 40 metres high, near the top it has a small opening that looks like a window. It was from this particularity that the parish of Ribeira da Janela was so named.

The Ilhéu da Rama or Ruama is about 200 metres from the coast, the largest and the one with some vegetation. As for Ilheuzinho, as its name indicates, it is the smallest and is similar to a rock that lies near the coast.

Ribeira da Janela was one of the locations that served as a stage for the recording of Star Wars, which took place in March 2023. The superb landscapes of the island were chosen, for the first time, to participate in this renowned saga, what a privilege!

Madeira Island Magazine turns 45 years old!

Em maio de 1978 surge um jornal com o nome de Madeira Island Bulletin, da responsabilidade de Don Glen Sandy que tinha como principal propósito dar a conhecer a Madeira a todos os seus visitantes.

Na altura, este jornal foi pioneiro na divulgação da ilha da Madeira no ramo turístico, retratando assuntos sobre o seu povo, os seus recantos e os seus

costumes e tradições.

A partir de 1999, o outrora jornal Madeira Island Bulletin, renasce com um novo nome e imagem. Surge assim a revista Madeira Island Magazine, que passa a ser impressa em formato de revista.

Mais de 20 anos depois, em setembro de 2020, a revista volta a ser reformulada e ganha uma nova vida com um aspeto mais moderno e

atrativo, que se mantém até hoje. Bimestralmente, a MIM ganha uma nova edição, impressa e digital, sempre escrita em Português e Inglês. Gratuitamente é distribuída por toda a ilha, pelos postos de informação, aeroporto, hotéis, restaurantes e mais além. No mundo digital, corre os quatro cantos do mundo. São mais de 4 décadas ao serviço do Turismo Madeirense.

O primário objetivo ainda impera atualmente, respeitando o propósito da sua origem: dar a conhecer os vários produtos e serviços da ilha da Madeira aos inúmeros turistas que todos os dias a visitam, mas também relembrar aos madeirenses o privilégio que é viver no ‘Melhor Destino Insular do Mundo’.

A MIM celebra mais uma edição consigo, esta de uma maneira muito especial. Obrigada a si leitor, por ao longo destes 45 anos de história acompanhar o crescimento e o desenvolvimento daquela que foi a primeira revista a dar a conhecer ao mundo a ilha da Madeira.

in May 1978 a newspaper by the name of Madeira Island Bulletin was launched by Don Glen Sandy with the main purpose of marketing Madeira to all its visitors.

At the time, this newspaper was a pioneer in promoting Madeira in the tourism business, covering issues about its people, its corners and its customs and traditions.

In 1999 the former Madeira Island

Bulletin was reborn with a new name and image. Thus was born the Madeira Island Magazine, which began to be printed in magazine format.

More than 20 years later, in

September 2020, the magazine is once again redesigned and given a new life with a more modern and attractive look, which remains to this day.

Bimonthly, MIM launches a new edition, printed and digital, always written in Portuguese and English. It is distributed free of charge all over the island, at information posts, the airport, hotels, restaurants and beyond. In the digital world, it runs to the four corners of the globe. More than four decades of service to Madeiran Tourism.

The primary goal still prevails today, respecting the purpose of its origin: to promote the various products and services of Madeira Island to the countless tourists who visit it every day, but also to remind Madeirans of the privilege of living in the ‘Best Island Destination in the World’.

MIM celebrates another edition with you, this one in a very special way. Thank you reader, for throughout these 45 years of history to accompany the growth and development of what was the first magazine to make Madeira known to the world.

AAlgures entre as montanhas da Camacha, situa-se o miradouro do Barkusky.

O nome é pouco usual entre os miradouros que se encontram ao longo da ilha, já a sua beleza é a mesma a que o arquipélago nos costuma habituar, mas nem por isso menos especial e única.

Ver o nascer do sol desde aqui pode ser uma experiência inesquecível, se as condições meteorológicas forem favoráveis. Pelo facto do aeroporto integrar a paisagem, é possível observar os aviões em constante movimento.

O miradouro, também estimado como zona de lazer, é encaixado numa curva, reservado como só ele o sabe ser. A tranquilidade é um ponto assente, convidativa a piqueniques. Para quem deseja preparar a refeição na hora, este lugar é igualmente perfeito para desfrutar de convívios na churrasqueira de pedra lá existente, com bancos e 7 mesas de apoio distribuídos pelo

espaço.

Já imaginou estar acima das nuvens, no meio da natureza, com uma paisagem arrebatadora? Uma coisa é certa, existem poucos lugares no mundo como este.

No dia 25 de junho, Santa Cruz celebra o seu 508º aniversário enquanto concelho.

omewhere deep in the mountains of Camacha, is the Barkusky viewpoint.

Although the name itself is unusual, this viewpoint’s beauty is unrivaled.

Watching the sunrise from here is an unforgettable experience (weather

permitting) as well as plane watching due to the airport set in the distance, making it possible to observe the planes in constant movement.

The viewpoint acts as a leisure area and is located on a bend in the road making it a tranquil spot for picnics. There is also a barbeque available to use with benches and seven support tables distributed throughout the area.

Have you ever imagined being above the clouds, in the middle of nature, surrounded by breathtaking landscape? One thing is certain, there are few places in the world like this.

Na freguesia do Arco de São Jorge, num lugar bem recatado, existe um pequeno baloiço em forma de barril. A tranquilidade e as vistas sobre a freguesia são uma mais-valia. É um sítio possível de aceder depois de uma pequena caminhada, por isso aconselhamos uma ajudinha do GPS para ser mais fácil de o encontrar.

Para baloiçar aqui é preciso descer até à Rocha do Navio, o único acesso possível. Contudo, a viagem valerá a pena. O baloiço torna-se uma recompensa depois da viagem sobre uma das fajãs mais bonitas da costa nordeste da ilha, onde as belas paisagens surgem a cada recanto.

The new swing trend has taken Portugal by storm. Built in the most ‘instagrammable’ places imaginable these swings are distributed across several locations, strategically placed to enhance the landscape.

This swing, located at the Eira da Achada viewpoint is simply enchanting. The lush green landscape blends into the blue of the sky and ocean. When the sun sets, this spot becomes even more stunning. There is room for two people to swing at the same time.

Hidden somewhere in the village of Arco de São Jorge, is a small barrel shaped swing where you can sit in peace and quiet and observe the views over the village. To visit you need to take a short walk, so we advise a little help from the GPS to make it easier to find.

Levadas candidates for World Cultural Heritage Site

Sentámo-nos com a Dra. Susana Fontinha, coordenadora da candidatura das Levadas da Madeira a património mundial cultural, adjunta do gabinete da Secretária Regional de Ambiente, Recursos Naturais e Alterações Climáticas para conhecer melhor esta candidatura e a sua importância para a Região. Antes deste projeto a Dra. Susana Fontinha coordenou também a candidatura do Porto Santo a Reserva da Biosfera da UNESCO que foi aprovada em 2020. O património mundial, de acordo com a Dra. Susana Fontinha, trata-se de bens, sejam naturais, culturais ou mistos, detentores de valores culturais e/ou naturais de Valor Universal Excecional, ou seja, únicos no mundo. As levadas da Madeira, em particular, foram candidatas a Património Cultural Mundial na categoria de paisagem cultural, que segundo a definição da UNESCO corresponde a bens culturais que representam “obras conjugadas entre o homem e a natureza”.

mim: Porque acha que as levadas devem ser elevadas a património mundial?

dra. SuSaNa foNTiNha: As levadas da Madeira devem fazer parte da Lista do Património Mundial por serem únicas, pelas suas características multifuncionais, sustentáveis e tecnológicas, essenciais à sobrevivência da população da Madeira. As nossas levadas assumem-se como um excecional empreendimento multifuncional, pois transportam água para consumo humano, irrigação agrícola e demais regadios, para acionar moinhos de água e a serragem de água da Achadinha e produzir energia elétrica nas Centrais Hidroelétricas. Para além disso, algumas levadas são igualmente extraordinários caminhos de descoberta da natureza que muitas vezes ligam o norte ao sul da ilha, por vezes atravessando o maciço montanhoso central, serpenteando vales e montanhas por entre a floresta primitiva, uma rica biodiversidade e um ambiente rural, onde se destacam os pitorescos poios com os seus muros de pedra emparelhada a sustentarem a nossa diversidade agrícola.

mim: Porque foram escolhidas as específicas oito levadas da candidatura?

dra. SuSaNa foNTiNha: Porque as oito levadas ou troços de levadas selecionados (Levada do Caldeirão Verde, Levada do Rei, Levada da Serra do Faial, Levada dos Tornos, Levada do Norte, Levada do Risco, Levada das 25 Fontes e Levada do Alecrim), para além de outros atributos, representam um exemplo tecnológico singular nos modos de ocupação humana numa ilha do Atlântico, que ao longo de seis séculos soube aproveitar os recursos naturais, como a água e o solo, e criou as condições necessárias à habitabilidade do ser humano desde o século XV e ao seu desenvolvimento socioeconómico, estando assegurada a sua manutenção e gestão no presente e para o futuro.

mim: A nível turístico que vantagens acarreta a candidatura das levadas a património mundial para a Madeira?

dra. SuSaNa foNTiNha: A candidatura não foi feita a pensar nas vantagens a nível turístico, mas sim no reconhecimento das nossas levadas como Património Cultural Mundial. Contudo, esta candidatura pretende, igualmente, promover o conhecimento sobre a história das nossas levadas, a sua construção, multifuncionalidade e extensão, garantindo e assegurando a sua manutenção e gestão, de modo a que as levadas da Madeira sejam também reconhecidas e enaltecidas por quem nos visita como algo de extraordinário do ponto de vista cultural, para além de, indiscutivelmente, serem uma agradável via de descoberta e usufruto das multifacetadas paisagens madeirenses.

mim: Como podemos reforçar a importância desta candidatura para os Madeirenses?

dra. SuSaNa foNTiNha: Informando e divulgando a relevância e singularidade

das levadas da Madeira. Com aproximadamente seis séculos de existência, umas mais antigas, outras mais recentes, fazem parte da história da Madeira, acompanham a história da humanidade, são indissociáveis da identidade dos madeirenses, fazem parte do nosso dia-a-dia e continuam a levar até cada um de nós um bem essencial à vida, a água.

mim: Em que fase se encontra a candidatura de momento?

dra. SuSaNa foNTiNha: Em fase de avaliação.

e sat down with Dr. Susana Fontinha, assistant to the Office of the Regional Secretary

for the Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change, to discuss the candidacy of the Madeira Levadas for world cultural heritage, which she is currently in charge of coordinating. Prior to this project, Dr. Fontinha also coordinated Porto Santo’s candidacy for UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, which was approved in 2020.

World heritage, according to Dr. Susana Fontinha, are assets, whether natural, cultural or mixed, that hold cultural and/or natural values of Outstanding Universal Value, that is, unique in the world. Madeira’s Levadas, in particular, were candidates for World Cultural Heritage in the category of cultural landscape, which according to UNESCO’s definition corresponds to cultural assets that represent “combined works of man and nature”.

mim: Why do you think the Levadas should be considered a world heritage site?

dra. SuSaNa foNTiNha: Madeira’s Levadas should be part of the World Heritage List because they are unique, for their multifunctional, sustainable and technological characteristics, essential to the survival of the population of Madeira. Our Levadas are an exceptional multifunctional undertaking, as they transport water for human consumption, agricultural irrigation and other irrigation, to activate water mills and water sawing at Achadinha, and to produce electricity in the Hydroelectric Power Plants. In addition, some Levadas are also extraordinary paths for discovering nature, which often connect the north to the south of the island, sometimes crossing the central mountainous massif, meandering through valleys and mountains, among primeval forest, a rich biodiversity and the rural environment, where the picturesque “poios” stand out, with their stone walls sustaining our agricultural diversity.

mim: Why were the specific eight Levadas from the candidacy chosen?

dra. SuSaNa foNTiNha: Because the eight Levadas or sections of Levadas selected (Levada do Caldeirão Verde, Levada do Rei, Levada da Serra do Faial, Levada dos Tornos, Levada do Norte, Levada do Risco, Levada das 25 Fontes and Levada do Alecrim), in addition to other attributes, represent a unique technological example in terms of human occupation on an island in the Atlantic, which over six centuries has known how to take advantage of natural resources, such as water and soil, and created since the 15th century the conditions necessary for human habitation and its socio-economic development, ensuring its maintenance and management in the present and for the future.

mim: Which members made up the candidacy team and what roles did they play?

dra. SuSaNa foNTiNha: I coordinate a multidisciplinary team composed of elements from various entities (IFCN, ARM, EEM, DRC, DROte, DRAAC and

SRAAC), which in a professional and committed manner, for the last three years, has been dedicated to building the candidacy of the Madeira Levadas to World Cultural Heritage, which was delivered by Portugal to the UNESCO World Heritage Center last January.

mim: In terms of tourism, what advantages does the candidacy of the Levadas bring to Madeira as a world heritage?

dr. SuSaNa foNTiNha: The application was not made thinking about the advantages in terms of tourism, but rather the recognition of our Levadas as World Cultural Heritage. However, this application also intends to promote knowledge about the history of our Levadas, their construction, multifunctionality, extension, and to guarantee and assure their maintenance and management, so that Madeira’s Levadas are also recognized and praised by those who visit us as something extraordinary from a cultural point of view, as well as undoubtedly being a pleasant way to discover and enjoy the multifaceted landscapes of Madeira.

mim: How can we reinforce the importance of this candidacy for Madeirans?

dra. SuSaNa foNTiNha: By informing and disseminating the relevance and uniqueness of Madeira’s Levadas, since with approximately six centuries of existence, some more ancient, others more recent, they are part of the history of Madeira and accompany the history

of humanity, making them inseparable from the identity of Madeirans, as they are part of our daily lives and continue to bring to each of us an essential good for life, water.

mim: At what stage is the candidacy currently at?

dra. SuSaNa foNTiNha: In the evaluation stage.

Folklore Group of the Casa do Povo de Santana

grupo de Folclore da Casa do Povo de Santana foi criado a 6 de julho de 1979, por proposta de João Teixeira de Mendonça, grande entusiasta e dinamizador das tradições de Santana. Em 1982, outro Grupo Folclórico de Santana criado em 1974 fundiu-se com o Grupo de Folclore da Casa do Povo, adotando este, o reportório mais genuíno do primeiro.

Constituem atualmente este grupo 40 elementos com idades compreendidas entre os 4 e os 69 anos, fazendo variadíssimas atuações na Região, em Portugal Continental em diversos Festivais Nacionais e Internacionais de Folclore e no Estrangeiro, nomeadamente em Inglaterra, França e Alemanha, onde existem as comunidades portuguesas, à qual levam a Cultura e Etnografia do nosso concelho e da nossa Região.

Em 1996, participou na gravação do CD “Braguinha”. Em 1998 gravou um CD intitulado “Memórias Vivas”. Em 2007 integrou a edição do livro e CD “Madeira Folclore”, em 2009 cooperou no filme “As Memórias Que Nunca se Apagam” e em 2013 associou-se ao DVD intitulado “O melhor Folclore da Madeira”.

É um grupo aderente da Federação de Folclore Português e sócio efetivo da Associação de Folclore e Etnografia da Madeira. É também anfitrião e organizador do Festival Regional de Folclore “24 Horas a Bailar”, único com

participação de todos os grupos de folclore da região, sendo um incentivo à investigação e divulgação da diversidade do património tradicional e genuíno das localidades que representam.

The Folklore Group of the Casa do Povo de Santana was founded on the 6th of July 1979, by João Teixeira de Mendonça, a great enthusiast and promoter of Santana’s traditions. In 1982, another group created in 1974 merged with the Folklore Group of Casa do Povo, which adopted the most authentic repertoire of the first one.

Nowadays this group is made up of 40 members with ages between 4 and 69 years old, performing in the Region, in mainland Portugal in several national and international festivals of folklore and abroad, namely in England, France and Germany, where there are Portuguese communities, where they

A 25 de maio de 1835, Santana foi elevada a vila e sede de concelho. São 188 anos de uma riqueza patrimonial inigualável e de uma beleza inconfundível.

In 1996 the group participated in the recording of the CD “Braguinha” and In 1998 they recorded a CD entitled “Memórias Vivas” (Living Memories). In 2007 they participated in the edition of the book and CD “Madeira Folclore”, in 2009 they cooperated in the film “As Memórias Que Nunca se Apagam” and in 2013 they joined the DVD entitled “O melhor Folclore da Madeira”.

The group is a member of the Portuguese Folklore Federation and an effective member of the Association of Folklore and Ethnography of Madeira. They also host and organise the Regional Folklore Festival “24 Horas a Bailar”, the only one with participation of all the folklore groups of the region, being an incentive to the investigation and dissemination of the diversity of the traditional and genuine heritage of the localities they represent.

On the 25th of May 1835, Santana was elevated to town and county seat. It has been 188 years of unparalleled heritage wealth and unmistakable beauty.

Igreja Matriz do ESPírITO SANTO Calheta

Espírito Santo Parish Church Calheta

freguesia da Calheta teve a sua primitiva sede na capela de Nossa Senhora da Estrela, porém afirma-se que ali não permaneceu por largos anos, procedendo-se então à construção de uma nova igreja, cujo ano se desconhece. O seu orago passou a ser o Espírito Santo.

É de referenciar o teto da capelamor e da nave central em estilo mudejar, para além de um valioso conjunto de ourivesaria sacra desde o séc. XVI até ao séc. XVIII (lampadários, pia batismal, cruz processional, um pia e dois volantes flamengos que representam a Anunciação, e que se encontram no Museu de Arte Sacra).

Esta Igreja conserva ainda um sacrário talhado em ébano com primorosas incrustações de prata, oferta de D. Manuel I, o Venturoso (peça original no património da Ilha).

Uma pedra no púlpito tem a data de 1639, data em que a Igreja foi totalmente reconstruída.

PARABÉNS CALHETA!

No dia 24 de junho é celebrado o 521º aniversário do Município da Calheta.

The parish of Calheta was originally established in the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Estrela, but it is said that it did not remain there for many yearsonce a new church was built. The patron saint changed to Holy Spirit.

It is worth mentioning the Mudejar ceiling of the chancel and the central nave, as well as a valuable set of sacred

jewellery from the 16th to the 18th century (lamps, baptismal font, processional cross, a font and two Flemish steering wheels representing the Annunciation, which can be found in the Museum of Sacred Art).

This church still conserves a tabernacle carved in ebony with exquisite silver inlays, a gift from D. Manuel I, the Fortunate (original piece in the patrimony of the Island).

A stone in the pulpit bears the date 1639, when the church was totally rebuilt.

BAM cENTrO dA BANANA dA MAdEIrA

BAM – Centro da Banana da Madeira foi construído à beiramar, no Lugar de Baixo (Ponta do Sol), uma das zonas mais soalheiras da ilha da Madeira.

É composto por um museu interpretativo que conta com um conjunto de tecnologias imersivas e interativas, que proporcionam uma experiência inovadora e intuitiva. A visita ao museu é acompanhada por um(a) guia e a informação digital pode ser disposta em Português, Inglês, Francês e Alemão.

A área visitável exterior conta com plantações com cerca de 7 mil metros quadrados, tendo em si um conjunto de zonas a serem exploradas, onde destacamos: terrenos agrícolas com os 17 variedades de bananeiras que existem na região; estufas de viveiros e desenvolvimento; viveiros de adaptação; câmaras de despencamento, refrigeração e amadurecimento; amarrações aéreas; corta-ventos; exemplares dos sistemas de rega mais utilizados na ilha;

sistema de transporte por cabo dos cachos; zona com várias variedades de mangueiros (2 deles com mais de 250 anos); entre outras novidades.

A visita ao exterior pode ser feita em conjunto com um smartphone com a aplicação “Centro da Banana da Madeira” (disponível na Play Store do Android e na Apple Store do iOS) ou com acompanhamento com guias (mediante a disponibilidade destes). Além disto, a zona interior conta com um Bar exclusivo para visitantes, onde temos, por exemplo, Cerveja de Banana (BAM Weissbier), Aguardente de Banana (produzido pela destilaria “Vinha Alta”, na Ponta do Sol), entre outros produtos confeccionados a partir de banana. Junto ao Bar, temos uma Loja com merchandising variado (t-shirts, bonés, bolsas, sacos de pano, canecas, etc).

O Centro foi preparado para uma visita autónoma através da utilização de aplicações específicas. Ao longo do percurso o visitante fica a conhecer desde a planta in vitro que chegou do laboratório até à planta que está no terreno, desde o cacho com flor ao que está pronto a apanhar.

bAM - Centro da Banana da Madeira was built near the coast, in Lugar de Baixo (Ponta do Sol), one of the sunniest areas of Madeira Island.

It consists of an interpretative museum with a set of immersive and interactive technologies that provide an innovative and intuitive experience. The visit to the museum is accompanied by a guide and the digital information can be displayed in Portuguese, English, French and German.

The visitable outdoor area has plantations of 7,000 square metres, and has a number of areas to explore,

The outdoor visit can be done with a smartphone with the application “Centro da Banana da Madeira “ (available at Play Store for Android and Apple Store for iOS) or accompanied by guides (subject to their availability). In addition, the indoor area has an exclusive Bar for visitors, where you can find, for example, Banana Beer (BAM Weissbier), Banana Rum (produced by the “Vinha Alta” distillery, in Ponta do Sol), among other products made from bananas. The Centre has been prepared for an autonomous visit through the use of specific applications. PArqUE EcOlógIcO do Funchal

natureza está tão perto da cidade do Funchal, num parque com 729 hectares dedicados à conservação do ambiente e dos recursos naturais, à educação ambiental e ao lazer.

A cerca de 11km do centro do Funchal, no sítio da Ribeira das Cales, situa-se o centro de receção e interpretação do Parque Ecológico do Funchal, ponto de partida para um conjunto de atividades de educação ambiental e de turismo de natureza.

Tem um pleno ambiente de montanha, entre os 470 e os 1818 m de altitude. A área do Parque constitui uma reserva para fauna e flora representativas da costa sul da ilha da Madeira.

Na flora estão identificadas 214 espécies e subespécies, onde se incluem 54 endemismos da Madeira, 26 endemismos da Macaronésia, 53 nativas e 81 exóticas.

A fauna é a representativa da ilha da Madeira, com as aves e as borboletas em destaque pela facilidade de observação. Entre os mamíferos destacam-se três espécies de morcegos nativos da Madeira.

ature is very close to the city of Funchal, in a park covering 729 hectares dedicated to the conservation of the environment and natural resources, environmental education and leisure.

About 11km from the centre of Funchal, at Ribeira das Cales, is the Funchal Ecological Park’s reception and interpretation centre, the starting point for a range of environmental education and nature tourism activities.

It is set amidst a mountainous environment, between 470 and 1818 metres above sea level. The park is a sanctuary for fauna and flora of the south coast of Madeira Island.

The flora includes 214 species and subspecies, including 54 Madeira endemics, 26 Macaronesian endemics, 53 native and 81 exotic.

Birds and butterflies stand out amongst the characteristic fauna of the Island, due to the ease of observation. Among the mammal species are three types of bats native to Madeira.
