Welcome to Utrecht
Photography Jurjen Drenth
Spring is here! A perfect time to jump on a bike and cycle through the city. An excellent way of discovering the arty side of Utrecht is to immerse yourself in the world of street art, one of the most accessible art forms you can find in modern cities. We’re taking you past some of the finest examples. Another good place to visit in spring are the petting farms in and around town, where you get the chance to feed the lambs, ride a pony or stroke the rabbits. The spring also marks the beginning of the festival season. In March, budding theatre-makers will surprise you with intimate shows in cafés while you sit at the bar unsuspectingly sipping your drink. The annual arts festival Tweetakt will also kick off in March, featuring a whole range of theatre, dance and musical performances (many suitable for nonDutch speakers!), visual art and interactive installations. And Neude square will be the centre of attention from 13 March, when the new central library opens its doors in the former post office.

Utrecht International Comedy Festival
The American culture website Vulture added the Utrecht comedy fest to its list of nine fantastic comedy festivals. For a good reason: the Utrecht International Comedy Festival is the largest stand-up comedy festival in the Benelux. Seven rooms on the top floor of TivoliVredenburg will provide a stage for over sixty British, American, Canadian, Belgian and Dutch performers. And there’s even more: the UICF is preceded by a Utrecht Comedy Week, which includes a show by the ‘anarchist cook’ George Egg and Raul Kohli’s pick of the Edinburgh Fringe. > 6 and 7 March, TivoliVredenburg utrechtinternationalcomedyfestival.nl

STREET ART IS ONE OF THE MOST ACCESSIBLE ART FORMS YOU CAN FIND IN MODERN CITIES. IT’S THERE FOR ALL TO SEE AND ANYONE CAN CONTRIBUTE (LEGALLY OROTHERWISE). THE WALLS OF UTRECHT ARE GRADUALLY TAKING ON MORE COLOUR. By Wieneke van Koppen

rtist JanIsDeMan asked residents of Mimosastraat to name their favourite books. He and fellow-artist Deef Feed then painted a gigantic bookcase on the corner of the street and Amsterdamse straatweg, 1 bursting with titles such as The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime. He’d never experienced so much personal interest in a work of art before, says Jan. ‘These books are the favourites of lots of other people too. They come from near and far to admire the mural. And standing there in front of it, they also notice the local shop next door. So the bookcase is having an impact on the local economy too.’ This bookcase has been in the national and international spotlight, but it’s not the only graffiti icon in Utrecht: there’s also an eccentric gnome with a red pointy hat and a big mouth called KBTR, whose maker has been leaving his/her mark anonymously for twenty years. ‘They cherish the mystery,’ says Jan, who is familiar with KBTR. ‘Very few people know who it is, which is why the artist is able to continue.’ He laughs: ‘If I were to spray JanIsDeMan everywhere, people would soon know where to find me.’ You’ll also come across KBTR outside Utrecht, and even abroad. ‘His omnipresence as an underground character commands respect among the entire graffiti community,’

explains Didi Steen, organiser of street art projects and tours. ‘He’s usually jolly, but there are a few more engaged, contemporary examples, such as the yellow jacket from 2018.’
TEMPORARY CHARACTER
KBTR was innovative in his day - characters weren’t common on the Dutch graffiti scene. Most artists created name tags (a sort of signature, ed.) These aren’t appreciated as much, particularly not when they’re sprayed across other, larger works of art. This is ‘not done’ on the scene. Jan is one of the few fans of tags. ‘People are proving that they exist. I get that. Nothing is forever on the street; let’s face it, it’s just paint.’ Jan experiments with this temporary character of graffiti at the skate park in Grift park. 2 ‘I saw the potential for a wicked graffiti painting. Skate parks are often covered in graffiti, just like
trains. So I decided to spray trains around the skate park, so that other graffiti artists could spray their work or tags over them. Some people think that’s a shame, but I can see the funny side.’ The municipality agreed to the plan and other graffiti artists soon got in on the act. KBTR was one of them - it’s a prominent presence at the skate park.

them copied works of art from the Centraal Museum onto walls in public spaces. They brought Sleeping Mars 3 by Hendrick ter Brugghen (1629) to Westplein and The Flute Player 4 by Abraham Bloemaert (1621) to Overvecht. The unique collaboration between the De Strakke Hand, Centraal Museum and Utrecht Marketing means that people who never visit museums are still exposed to visual art. De Strakke Hand was responsible for finding suitable buildings for these enormous murals. Michiel: ‘Everything had to be right. The fabric of the wall, the location and the vibe. The monumental building on Van Asch van Wijckskade was perfect for the classical portrait by Pyke Koch, 5 and the high-rise flat in Kanaleneiland was ideally suited to The Lute Player 6 by Dirck van Baburen.’ Every masterpiece was inspected digitally to work out the best way of copying it onto the building. The sketches were projected onto the walls using special beamers, before the artists were hoisted onto lifting platforms to
There isn’t much room for large, new outdoor works of art in the centre of Utrecht. Districts like Kanaleneiland and Leidsche Rijn provide more opportunity. In fact, a Hall of Fame for graffiti work was recently created on Berlijnplein 7 in Leidsche Rijn. This is crucial to the development of street art, says Didi. ‘Every successful graffiti artist spent their formative years experimenting with an aerosol. Unfortunately, you don’t have much time to refine your work when what you’re doing is illegal. The Hall of Fame allows up-and-coming artists to create finished, larger works of art legally, so they can experiment at a higher level. They simply choose their spot and start spraying.’ The Hall of Fame features very diverse work by different types of artists. Didi: ‘The best works of art usually remain for longer because no-one wants to spray over them. But you may still find that your favourite piece, however good it was, has been replaced by something else a week later. So the Hall of Fame is constantly renewing itself.’ Which is the whole point of street art. For more information about Didi Steen’s street art tours, go to: greetingsfromutrecht.nl

Q&A WITH JACOB MELLENY AND HARRY THOROGOOD By Manon Marijs
Since November last year Utrecht can call itself home to its very first churros café: Papi Churro. After successfully running a churros food truck at several food festivals for three years, owners Jacob and Harry decided to step up their churros game. So, how did these two guys from London wind up in Utrecht? It all started five years ago at a ski resort in France. The two friends worked at a Dutch student’s bar. Their manager also happened to manage the TREK Food Truck Festival and he invited them over to work for the festival. Jacob and Harry enjoyed it so much, that they bought their very own food truck to kick off their churros enterprise. And now you can enjoy Papi Churro all year round in the heart of Utrecht’s city centre. > Korte Minrebroederstraat 5 papi-churro.com
Build your own ‘We like Utrecht’s bustling atmosphere, especially in summer. With Papi Churro, we’re bringing something new and tasty to the city. Something that’s different from the crepes and waffles that are available already.’ With names such as Basic Bitch, Salt Bae and White Virgin, their churros are definitely out there. You can build your own as well by adding loads of different toppings. ‘Since our café is more spacious than our truck, we’ve started expanding our product range by making our own vegan cookie dough toppings. Also, we’ve created a special Papi Churro coffee roast that complements our churros perfectly.’
Deli ‘Bigoli (Schoutenstraat 12) is an amazing Italian deli slash sandwich shop located in the heart of the city. Going there makes you think you’ve just popped to Bologna for the day. They have incredibly fresh and authentic products that taste delicious on a sandwich or a in salad. Add to that their lovely staff and great atmosphere and you’ve got one of our favourite places to grab a bite.’

Second home
‘We enjoy visiting the Louis Hartlooper Complex (Tolsteegbrug 1) cinema on our days off or on the weekends. It is always buzzing with locals and gives you a chance to see the films that wouldn’t be featured in the larger cinemas. Watching a film in one of the cosy screening rooms is a true Utrecht experience. Also, the Cineville card makes it the most affordable cinema to go to if you’re cinephiles like us.’
‘Festival TREK (end of May in Grift park) is like a second home for us. We’ve been attending this outdoor festival for over three years now with our food truck. We love the vibe, the quality of what’s on offer and the buzz that comes with it. It’s a great for a family day out or for an evening of partying with friends. Even if we’re not there with our food truck, we still go and enjoy a beer in the sun.’

Bella Italia ‘O’Panouzzo (Mariastraat 35) has the best pizza in town, hands down. Their dough is authentically Neapolitan and the service is fantastically Italian. Make sure to get the Calbrese pizza with a Birra Moretti to clench your thirst. And if the weather allows it, you should head outside. There’s nothing better than eating your pizza on the terrace whilst watching the world go by.’

MAGICAL-REALISTIC WORLD
CONTINENTS
Two people try to keep going in a daily routine, while sinister, violent cravings are emerging through the cracks in their perfect existence. The line dividing man from beast seems dangerously thin within the four walls of their living room. Music, design and light combine to create a magical-realistic on-stage world, in which the divisions between dayto-day drudgery, fantasy and nightmare gradually erode.
The Brazilian choreographer Bruno Beltrão started a revolution in hip-hop by combining it with other styles of modern dance. In this dance production, ten dancers argue the case for freedom of movement by testing the boundaries between hiphop, breakdance and contemporary dance. Our body is the most powerful, and yet the most vulnerable, thing that we possess. We are all, to some extent, concerned about our bodies. How do culture and media affect our self-image? UTRECHT SURREALISM
DE TRANEN VAN EROS (EROS’ TEARS) The only official Dutch surrealist was born in Utrecht: the painter Johannes Moesman (1909-1988). He portrayed his sexual fantasies at a time when it was highly taboo, particularly in the Netherlands. But he wasn’t the only surrealist who tried to free himself from the confines of conformism by exploring this topic. This exhibition places Moesman’s work within the context of his international counterparts. In addition to Salvador Dalí, René Magritte and Max Ernst, for the first time, space has been allocated to female surrealists.
Artist Jasmijn Visser and designer S✝ëfan Schäfer reflect upon the psychology of the masses in the current digital era. The exhibition is also a chance to view a work of the same name (The Crowded Sky), a 90-minute experience that evolves into a group exhibition. The various works of art appear and disappear, reflecting on concepts relating to the psychology of the masses from the perspective of visual art, drama, architecture and design.

IMAGINATION
ALLEMAAL WONDEREN Miracles are nothing new. They have been an important part of day-to-day life in every culture and every religion since the beginning of time. They have also been a constant source of inspiration to artists. Depicting events between heaven and earth requires an enormous feat of imagination. But this challenge has led to some of the most exciting, moving works of art ever created. This exhibition is a compilation of the finest, most unique art works from national and international collections, from Rembrandt and Mondriaan to Abramovi . > until 23 August, Museum Catharijneconvent catharijneconvent.nl/visitorinformation/

CHEERFUL ILLUSTRATIONS
La Nonette MANY OF THE CHEERFUL ILLUSTRATIONS THAT LA NONETTE CREATES ON CARDS, STICKERS AND MURAL ART PRINTS ARE DESIGNED TO QUESTION THE IMPOSSIBLE FEMININE BEAUTY IDEAL.
La Nonette is the pseudonym of illustrator Manon Bijkerk: it’s an abbreviation of her first names, with ‘La’ alluding to her French-Belgian roots. She is well-known for her cheerful illustrations on cards, stickers and art prints for on the wall. Manon graduated in 2011, in the middle of the economic crisis. ‘At that time, becoming an illustrator of children’s books, for example, simply wasn’t an option. So I decided to rely on myself, bought a printer and started my solo label.’ Barcelona, where she lived for a time, is a great source of inspiration to her. The colours and vibe of the city drive her style of drawing. In a nod to feminism, women are often the key figures in her prints. ‘Illustration is largely communication. I want to draw attention to social themes like
THE COLOURS AND VIBE OF BARCELONA DRIVE HER STYLE OF DRAWING sexuality and the impossible feminine beauty ideal.’ La Nonette calls these myths into question with texts such as I was born bikini ready. ‘I like to draw strong women. My illustrations are recognisable and accessible: I’m trying to generate a sort of ‘dependable big sister’ feeling.’

PULL UP A CHAIR IN VENSTER, A NO-FRILLS LOCAL RESTAURANT 1
METROPOLITAN
LEIDSCHE RIJN CENTRE
The place to go whether you want a portion of fried fish, a pair of exclusive Tom Ford glasses, Louboutin boots for € 900 or flip-flops for € 5. The shopping centre has 130 shops, in streets built to look authentically European. Think Barcelona without the tourists, or Paris without the traffic. And the parking is cheap too. If you fancy a breather after all that shopping, go to see a film in the Pathé rooftop cinema (Berlijnplein 100) or pull up a chair in Venster (Berlijnplein 520), a no-frills local restaurant.

BEAUTY TO BEHOLD Lurie Park in Chicago, the Highline in New York and the Vlinderhof in Leidsche Rijn. A highly respectable list! All these gardens were designed by the Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf, who is also referred to as the Rembrandt of gardens. Oudolf’s gardens are spectacular all year round. His designs ensure that even in the autumn, the fifty shades of grey and brown of the flowers and plants that have finished flowering are still a beauty to behold. Another unique fact: volunteers take care of the upkeep of this free garden in the huge Máximapark. > Alendorperweg 44 vlinderhof.com

Leidsche Rijn may be a brand-new housing estate, but the history of Dengh restaurant goes back to 1259 as it’s based in an old farm. The food in the restaurant adapts with the seasons. The menu was recently changed, and now features dishes made from locally sourced ingredients and delicious cocktails (with or without alcohol). ROMAN LEGACY
CASTELLUM HOGE WOERD At Castellum Hoge Woerd, you’ll find an authentic Roman ship that was excavated nearby. Many Italians are still trying to ship it back to Rome. Castellum is a modern interpretation of a Roman fort on the Limes border, where archaeology, hospitality, theatre and nature are simply crying out to be discovered. The neighbouring restaurant Rare Jongens (Het Zand 52) serves a home-brewed stout known as Triple Trappel, as well as delicious food. > Hoge Woerdplein 1 castellumhogewoerd.nl

GAS STATION-TURNEDRESTAURANT
DE POMP
‘Fuel for everyone’ - De Pomp’s slogan is not too far-fetched if you take into consideration a bit of its history. As a former Shell gas station, it stood abandoned and tattered on the Croeselaan for years. Last year, initiators Marlou, Kimmarah, Danny and Joep, together with local residents of the Dichterswijk, decided to completely refurbish it and create a place that adds to the vibrancy of the neighbourhood. De Pomp has a nice and light décor, sun-drenched terrace and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. A lot of the food on the menu is produced organically and sourced locally. > Croeselaan 122 depomputrecht.nl
This restaurant that looks like - you guessed it - a giant greenhouse sheds a new light on how to deal with urbanisation and sustainability. The Green House’s modus operandi revolves around the concept of circularity, which means that they produce as little waste as possible. The chefs have access to their own urban farm with herbs and vegetables and the kitchen runs on green energy. And since this part of the Croeselaan will be repurposed in 15 years, the restaurant can be disassembled and rebuilt elsewhere. > Croeselaan 16 thegreenhouserestaurant.nl

Communications The huge building on Neude square is simply impossible to miss. It’s the former main post office of Utrecht, designed in 1921 by architect Joseph Crouwel. The start of the construction, which took three years, raised a lot of dust: a whole block of houses and even a medieval monastery had to be taken down. Some people even refused to leave their house for this ‘outrage of modernisation’. The building was used as the central point of communication in the city, where all the machinery for telegraphy and telephony was installed. Inside, customers could use phone boots, buy stamps or send letters and packages. Postmen were important people in this era, so the main hall exudes that importance: it looks like a giant ballroom with imposing statues looking down on you. But times have changed. These days, you can communicate with your friends on the other side of the world without the help of a postman. As a result, the post office closed its doors in 2011. Luckily, you will have the chance to peek inside again from 13 March, when the Central Library will open its doors. So don’t hesitate to admire the impressive main hall while you read a magazine, find a quiet space to handle your email or meet friends in one of the restaurants. > In collaboration with Het Utrechts Archief. BOUTIQUE HOTEL THE HUNFELD IS LOCATED IN A MAGNIFICENT BUILDING ON ONE OF UTRECHT’S LOVELIEST SQUARES. IN AROUND 1895, IT HOUSED A BRANCH OF MAGAZIJN ‘DE DOM’, UTRECHT’S VERY FIRST MEN’S CLOTHES SHOP. THE NAME OF THE HOTEL IS A REFERENCE TO THE FORMER OWNERS: GROVE & HUNFELD. COOL & TRENDY
Photography Myrthe Slootjes
THE HUNFELD
The hotel has thirty rooms of various sizes. The larger rooms boast an extra feature: a bay window looking onto Mariaplaats, the Music Academy and the Dom Tower. The room on the fourth floor even has a shower built into the bay, so that you can enjoy your morning ablutions with a view of the Dom! If you want to stay in Utrecht for more than a couple of nights (entirely understandable),
there are five luxury apartments for two to four guests. The apartments have a living room, a kitchen, one or two bedrooms and a separate bathroom. > The Hunfeld, Mariaplaats 4 thehunfeld.com/en
