WELCOME

A look on the bright side A LOT HAS HAPPENED IN THESE PAST MONTHS. COVID-19 HAS SPREAD ACROSS THE GLOBE AND MANY COUNTRIES HAVE BEEN IN PARTIAL OR TOTAL LOCKDOWN. NEW RULES AND REGULATIONS WERE PUT IN PLACE TO SLOW THE SPREAD OF THE VIRUS AND TO ENABLE THE ECONOMY TO SLOWLY START UP AGAIN. MANY WITHIN THE INDUSTRY HAVE FELT THE ECONOMIC REPERCUSSIONS, BUT THIS SECTOR HAS ALSO SHOWN RESILIENCE AND INNOVATION. In this issue we will focus on the Netherlands. We shall take a closer look at Project Electra by Heesen. She is the second hybrid yacht sold by the shipyard in the 5000 aluminium class. We welcome Damen Yachting, a new yachting division within the family-owned Damen Shipyards Group. The move follows a solid decade of growth with a strong order book across the entire portfolio. Another interesting topic is the latest research on superyacht engineering. In his master thesis Stefan van der Harst, Junior Naval Architect at C-Job Naval Architects, stipulates how yacht engineering can be reduced by four-and-a-half months. We would also like to introduce the beautiful B.YOND by Benetti, a new category of expedition yacht. The B.YOND is 37m long and designed for long and comfortable cruises with a reduced environmental impact. Another precious addition to the yachting scene is the 64steel Attila, the Sanlorenzo flagship. The 64m superyacht is full of brilliant and innovative solutions and is the largest yacht produced by Sanlorenzo so far. On our Entertainment Systems pages we zoom in on Videoworks, a company that has recently integrated sophisticated technologies for home entertainment, audio/ video, lighting, and home automation on the first Riva Yachts 50m superyacht. We also put a spotlight on VBH. VBH designs integrated systems for yachts, matching luxury technology options with controlled ways of building. In our special on Marine Propulsion, Power Generation, and Hybrid Propulsion you will find the Total Onboard Power Solutions (TOPS), a collaboration that highlights the expertise of KOHLER Marine Generators and Leonardo DRS. The two companies have teamed up to provide a more efficient, quieter, and power-dense propulsion for the customer while reducing environmental impact. We look at MTU that provides green solutions for superyacht propulsion systems and as of 2021, Rolls-Royce will launch a range of MTU hybrid ship propulsion in series onto the market. And then there is ZF Marine. This company is expanding its portfolio with the brand’s first hybrid transmission that can be installed on the ship in both V (V drive) and A (down angle) positions. We hope you will continue to look on the bright side as the world turns, and enjoy reading these pages of SuperYacht Industry. Sanny Ensing | Editor sanny@ynfpublishers.com

NEWS IN BRIEF Lürssen launches project 1601 In May Lürssen launched project 1601 in the traditional fashion: down the slipway! Espen Oeino has given the 90m superyacht a striking design with extraordinary features dominated by planar surfaces, straight lines and angular corners. The exterior styling suggests a geometrical precision that permeates every facet of the yacht. The interior is designed by Dölker+Voges and echoes the same design themes as her exterior. Cornelsen & Partner is acting as Project Manager in the owner’s team throughout the construction process. After the launching, project 1601 went into Lürssen’s floating dock and spectators may have to wait until next year for another appearance. Photo courtesy of Klaus Jordan/Lürssen.

Vripack goes back to nature with Futura When Dutch design studio Vripack set about designing Futura – its 66m fossil-free yacht concept – the focus was to capture wildlife’s innate ability to freely propel through air and water. Her flowing, curvaceous lines denote an elegant femininity that draws from a collection of shapes found in nature. With sustainability at the fore, Futura is slender, efficient and a third of the height of a comparable 66m yacht. Capable of holding 100,000l of fuel, Futura is an electric/diesel hybrid with a difference. Designed to run solely on ‘blue diesel’ if desired – a type of Finnish biofuel made from waste food – it also possesses revolutionary bio-based batteries made from salt, sand, water and plants. Charged by an enormous kite on an electric winch, the battery bank itself is 100% biodegradable.

Heesen keeps Project Castor on schedule during COVID-19 pandemic YN 19055 Project Castor was launched at the Heesen facility in Oss on schedule for its delivery in August. Thanks to the drastic measures adopted early on, Heesen was able to carry on work during the COVID-19 crisis with as little disruption as possible. By halving the number of employees working in the shipyard at any one time by working in two shifts, the company did not lose productivity, and increased flexibility. At 760GT, Project Castor is the most voluminous 55m currently offered by a Northern European shipyard. Powered by two MTU 8V 4000 M63 diesel main engines, she will reach a top speed of 15.5 knots and will boast a range of 4,500nm at a cruising speed of 13 knots. YN 19055 will be delivered to her owners in August 2020 after rigorous sea trials in the North Sea.

NEWS IN BRIEF Sanlorenzo launches the first 44Alloy Sanlorenzo launched the first 44Alloy, the new fast displacement superyacht with a length of 44.5m, entirely in aluminium. The yacht is making its official debut this year. The new model featuring interior design by the Florentine architect Michele Bonan is being built at the shipyard at La Spezia. With five boats already sold and under construction, the 44Alloy is the result of the conceptual and design prowess of the Sanlorenzo team and Bernardo Zuccon. They have envisioned, designed and produced a yacht with four decks and a gross tonnage of 470, in a streamlined model. Special features include the owner’s cabin, a private apartment of 145m2 that is spread out over three levels with indoor and outdoor areas. This specific set up has never been done before on a yacht this size.

ideoworks, a leader in the audio/video, entertainment, IT, and home automation sectors, followed very clear guidelines in the creation of the systems on board the Riva M/Y Race, the first 50m yacht that inaugurated the SuperYachtsDivision of Riva Yachts. All the systems for lighting, audio/video, entertainment, and home automation had to be very easy to use. This was achieved with a high level of customisation, a distinguishing feature of onboard systems created by Videoworks. The group always offers innovative and original technological solutions, with experience based on more than 700 projects developed over 20+ years of activity. The use of domotics audio/video systems is now among the main requests from owners and guests. Must-haves of system integration now include being able to watch a soccer match on a large screen with very high resolution, listen to music with loudspeakers that faithfully reproduce pure sounds, host a party on board, manage lights, blinds, multi-media contents, and air conditioning, and to securely and reliably browse the internet.

The 50m yacht that inaugurated the SuperYachtsDivision of Riva Yachts yields superconcentrated technology. Videoworks designed the AV, IT, TV/Sat, CCTV, IP telephony, and

home automation system. The AV-IT system was designed according to the philosophy of a distributed system – each cabin/hall has a local rack containing AV electronics. The audio system in the internal and external premium areas includes the James Loudspeaker marine speakers. IP telephony is based on a Panasonic switchboard with fixed and cordless terminals. The IT infrastructure (cabled and Wi-Fi) is entirely made with Cisco hardware, a world leader in terms of reliability and performance. Thanks to its considerable experience and longterm partnership with Lutron (a big company in the production of light control systems), Videoworks designed and built the on-board home automation system, including the intelligent control of lights and blinds in the guest area, which makes time on board even more pleasant. The CCTV system fully consists of professional Panasonic products. It includes five highresolution IP cameras and a network recorder for recording video flows and archiving in encrypted form. Additionally, the satellite TV receiving system has a double antenna with arbitrator, guaranteeing an optimal signal without blind spots.

eighing in at 1,600 gross tons, with a length of 64m, five decks, and a maximum beam of 13.10m, 64Steel Attila is the largest yacht produced by Sanlorenzo so far. It is an innovative proposal, thanks to a layout and structures commonly found in large yachts, permitting Sanlorenzo to apply novel solutions to optimise on-board livability, combined with elegant external lines created by Officina Italiana Design.

Style and innovation The most important aspect of the definition and concept of the yacht has been the desire to create continuity between the main deck at the stern, with the pool and dining areas, and the beach club on the lower deck, by way of a double staircase. This characteristic makes it possible to fully enjoy both areas, as they are the focal points of life on board. With the transom and lateral platforms open, the beach club – which also contains a sauna, steam bath,

There is, for example, the ability to reserve an entire deck for the shipowner, the owner’s deck, which includes the bedroom facing the bow and has a large whirlpool bath outside. Then there is the option to load two big tenders of over 10m in length that can also serve as limousine tenders, thanks to the garage’s height

more commonly found in yachts over 80m long with a maximum beam of 13.10m and also more typical of a yacht over 70m long. The helipad for touch and go at the bow which can be turned into an extraordinary solarium when not in use, truly sets Attila apart, as does the fact that an extension from 64m to 70m is also possible, depending on varying requests. The crew area is located on the lower deck and has a private and independent routing with two service stairs and an elevator for the rapid

transfer of cold and dry goods into the storage rooms. Below the lower deck lies the tank deck with a refrigeration chamber, a refrigerated waste room, a multimedia room for the crew, a large laundry, and a climate-controlled ‘wine cellar’ with a capacity of up to 500 bottles. The four guest rooms and the full beam VIP suite are located on the main deck.

sleek design with a shallow draft, Electra is a highly fuel efficient yacht designed for living. The second in the award-winning 5000 FHDF hybrid class, she possesses a flowing layout that invites the outdoors in. Marrying performance with low fuel consumption, she combines the ultra-efficient Fast Displacement Hull Form with Heesen’s advanced hybrid solution. Offering both diesel mechanical and diesel electrical propulsion, either source can be used independently or simultaneously, providing greater flexibility in power management and improved performance, as well as the rare pleasure of cruising in near perfect silence with zero vibrations. Furthermore, Electra delivers unparalleled fuel efficiency thanks to her ultra-slippery FDHF hull. Devised by Dutch hydrodynamicists Van Oossanen Naval Architects the advanced hull has been seamlessly crafted by Heesen’s in-house welding team.

Award-winning design Ingenious naval architecture combined with clever engineering and meticulous attention to weight reduction make Project Electra one of the most efficient yachts in her class. In fact, sistership Home received several international accolades recognising the innovative ecofriendliness of Heesen’s hybrid solution, including the Rina Green award presented by HSH Prince Albert of Monaco. Compared to a traditional diesel engine arrangement, the hybrid power and propulsion system is quieter and more fuel-efficient. In addition, it offers the benefit of significant cost-reductions and flexible power management, due to its four different cruising modes: – Hybrid mode: up to 9 knots at noise levels of just 46dB, equivalent to soft rain! Two water-cooled

s u p e r y a c h t - i n d u s t r y. com

Heesen Electra.indd 15

DC electric shaft motors of 127kW each quietly power the yacht. The benefits are silent cruising and higher manoeuvrability in close quarters. – Economic Mode: 9-12 knots with main engines on and generators off. Ideal for longer passages, the economic mode comes with few interesting perks – frugal fuel consumption (at 12 knots the yacht burns just 98l per hour) and extended generator service life. – Cruising Mode: 12-15 knots. This is the traditional mode, where the diesel engines drive the yacht’s propellers and the generators provide the hotel load. – Boost Mode: to achieve the max speed 16.3 knots, the generator-powered shaft motors are brought into service alongside the main engines to give an extra kick of power.

The luxury of silence Although hybrid technology is often only associated with fuel efficiency or other cost-reducing benefits, Heesen’s hybrid solution also serves its owners with enhanced frontend. Silence is by far the most important benefit that the hybrid technology offers for owners on board. When power is generated purely from its e-motor and generators instead of main engines, the yacht is almost as silent as when at anchor. Manoeuvrability is another aspect of great importance for owners, especially during harbour or marina operations. High engine torque at low revolutions per minute makes manoeuvring at low speeds and in tight spaces more precise. With an electric motor, it is possible to go from full ahead to full astern instantaneously, making the hybrid mode the perfect cruise mode for all your port operations. Fuel-efficiency is achieved when the diesel engines and

FOCUS ON THE NETHERLANDS electrical motors are combined during cruising. Hybrid systems provide significant cost and efficiency savings. In the case of Heesen‘s solution, the most significant fuel consumption benefits are achieved when cruising in the lowest hybrid mode, allowing the yacht to run at no more than 70l per hour. This means fewer refuelling stops and more time for cruising.

windows that offer unparalleled views. The use of mirrors cleverly provides a sense of space and a unique connection to the outdoors. Angular yet inviting, the twelve-person formal dining table and surrounding space present the ideal opportunity for socialising and fine dining. The seating area leads directly out to the main deck aft.

Sophisticated chic

Borderless environment

Dutch designer Frank Laupman of Omega Architects has created a highly contemporary exterior. Electra’s radical profile with a nearly vertical bow perfectly blends aesthetics with functionality. The vertical bow with spray rails is not only on-trend, it also serves a practical purpose by providing progressive buoyancy when carving through waves. The distinctive bow shape also means the crew accommodation can be set further forward. Electra’s interior has been designed by Cristiano Gatto, who has added a sophisticated touch that is fresh and vibrant. Bespoke furnishings are handcrafted with soft edges and flowing lines, creating a tranquil environment. Dark oak flooring and subtle wooden accents highlight the bright fabrics and panelling for a welcoming effect. Electra’s new owners appointed prestigious Monegasque boutique Sabrina Monte-Carlo to assist with the decoration and detailing of their yacht. A contemporary style and light colour palette has been specified for the selection of luxurious, designer loose furniture and top tier fabrics, alongside the finest linen and ‘art de la table’. The 65m2 main saloon dining area is flooded with natural light thanks to a bank of floor-to-ceiling

The sky lounge is one of the most outstanding areas on board, with floor-to-ceiling windows like a veranda overlooking the ocean. Designed for owners and guests to unwind and relax, it features a glass sliding door that leads onto the aft deck, a borderless environment between indoors and out. Located forward on the main deck, a wide corridor leads down the starboard side into the owner’s stateroom. Floor-to-ceiling windows on either side create a bright and airy space, accentuating the textured wooden panels and quality fabrics. The full beam suite provides a spacious retreat. The en-suite bathroom, equipped with a generous shower, incorporates stone, marble and glass in a monochromatic palette. The lower deck is home to five generous guest suites. Two twin and two double cabins complement the full beam VIP suite, providing ample space for privacy and relaxation. All guest suites continue the contemporary design language of the yacht. Mirrored back walls work with large windows in every cabin, emphasising space and light.

eesen Yachts’ new 49.8m hybrid yacht Project Electra captivates with its contemporary interior design by Cristiano Gatto. For the fitting of the full-beam VIP suite, two twins and two double cabins, as well as the sky lounge and day head, Heesen put their trust in the expertise and craftsmanship of Austrian interior outfitter List General Contractor (List GC). List GC was responsible for the project management and engineering as well as the production of the interior in their in-house manufacturing facility in Bad Erlach, Lower Austria. “For my team and I, Project Electra was our first project working together with Heesen Yachts”, comments Philipp Moser, Project Manager at

List GC. “So, when we first started with the project, we had to adapt to the shipyard’s workflows and processes. But we were able to do that very quickly and the collaboration went smoothly right from day one. This was due to Heesen’s trust in our professionalism and craftsmanship as well as our mutual understanding of quality and design in order to achieve the best possible result. I am very proud of the final outcome and pleased that our work on board Project Electra has already resulted in two follow-up projects with Heesen.

Interaction of opposites According to Mr Moser, the consistent interaction of opposites in the interior concept is

In order not to interfere with the desired shape, the ventilation system had to be evenly integrated in the ceiling. The panels were then finished with high-gloss teak and fine polished stainless steel. A centrepiece of the sky lounge is the bar that stands out due to its layered appearance finished with brushed spruce and a top made from polished teak. This material was also used to highlight the walls. To create this haptic effect, the artisans from List GC brushed and patinated the spruce and applied a protective

varnish. “The challenge in doing so was to keep the colour consistent from the very beginning as post-processing was not possible without compromising the continuous appearance across all areas”, explains Mr Moser.

Harmonious look The guest cabins display a balanced combination of leather, brushed spruce, teak and padded fabric. In addition, many lacquered panels and surfaces were colour-matched with the bright fabrics covering the walls to create a harmonious look. “This was no small feat for our manufacturing team”, recalls Mr Moser. The guest bathrooms feature a selection of stone and marble together with dark teak and spruce. The cupboard and ceiling were engineered with modern LED lights that evenly illuminate the room. According to Mr Moser, the greatest challenge in the interior outfitting process was to guarantee a smooth, seamless look throughout the interior space. “Many of the materials, surfaces and elements run through the entire interior, adding to the uniform and clear appearance of the yacht. Therefore, we worked closely with Heesen’s in-house interior and manufacturing team to colour-match all used surface materials and lacquers and ensure this smooth transition between elements in all rooms.”

MARINE PROPULSION & POWER GENERATION, HYBRID PROPULSION

Hybrid-electric onboard power solutions LEADING SHIPBOARD POWER EXPERTS KOHLER MARINE GENERATORS AND LEONARDO DRS HAVE TEAMED UP TO APPRAISE market readiness for advanced, highly-efficient hybrid-electric onboard power solutions for customers, including those in the megayacht segment.

T

otal Onboard Power Solutions (TOPS) is a collaboration that highlights the two companies’ respective expertise to provide a more efficient, quieter and power-dense propulsion for the customer while reducing environmental impact. KOHLER and Leonardo DRS are able to combine their complementary maritime power portfolios and vast market experience to identify and evaluate a wide variety of maritime hybrid electric engine technologies with smaller and more powerdense configurations. The technologies are designed for a range of applications and topologies to service both commercial vessels and megayachts. “TOPS creates a wide selection of advanced power generation, power conditioning, power management and controls to handle a wide array of onboard power needs,” said Jos Raats, Kohler’s Managing Director of Global Marine Power Systems.

systems into their propulsion systems, KOHLER and Leonardo DRS offer an experienced team of globally-experienced technology developers and integrators to best address the needs of reducing emissions and engine operating costs. The TOPS team works directly with ship developers to identify individual power needs for each project and develops a conceptual design to the specified requirements using readily available products from their combined portfolio. Propulsion designs can include AC and DC variable speed systems; propulsion power demands and emergency generators; and diesel-electric hybrid and zero-emission propulsion modes.

FOCUS ON THE NETHERLANDS

ShipSupport ONE-STOP-SHOP FOR SHIP PARTS IN THE CONSUMER MARKET IT IS CUSTOMARY TO BE TRANSPARENT ABOUT PRICES, DELIVERY TIMES, AND SHIPPING COSTS. THIS HAS NOT ALWAYS BEEN THE CASE IN THE SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY, WHERE companies can be less forthcoming with this information. But no more. ShipSupport provides a platform for shipowners to order their spare parts directly at the source.

U

ntil recently, shipbuilders and owners in need of parts for their vessels usually had to approach different suppliers. There is now an easier and less time-consuming option, thanks to ShipSupport. Customers can order all desired parts via this platform, upon which the relevant suppliers send them to a central distribution centre, which in turn delivers the complete order to the requested location in the world. ShipSupport is an initiative of Maaike de Rover. While working for shipbuilding company Royal IHC, she realised there could be an easier way to source ship parts. “I was working in the service division for ship maintenance. I noticed that building ships is a different discipline than providing service”, she recalls. “Shipyards are a closed and conservative market. You can spend ages looking for the right part. At the same time, it is a gigantic market. Worldwide, it costs about EUR 30 billion in parts to keep all vessels of approximately 30,000 owners in operation. Because this mega-market is so fragmented, I decided to set up a digital platform to make ordering parts easier and more transparent. IHC gave me the green light for this, which ultimately led to ShipSupport.”

Growing confidence Ms De Rover is now Managing Director of the platform, which took almost two years to build. It was launched in November 2018 and according to the founder, it was an exciting time as the phenomenon of digitisation in the maritime world is still in its infancy. “However, the interest in the platform is steadily increasing”, states Ms De Rover. “There are currently 65 suppliers affiliated with the platform,

2 2 | S Y I 2 0 2 0 | Vo l um e 1 5 | Issue 2

ShipSupport.indd 22

with a combined portfolio of more than one million parts. In addition, more than 250 customers from 62 countries are placing an increasing number of orders for parts via ShipSupport.” Just over a year and a half since the launch, confidence is growing, says Ms De Rover. “This growth was only possible because of our very dedicated team that is fully committed to making this platform a success. We employ seventeen staff members, including seasoned maritime professionals, but also people with experience in E-commerce or from other industries ranging from education to telecom. This interesting mix is what makes us so successful.”

Top tier brands According to Ms De Rover, ShipSupport is unique in its kind. While technically seen the digital platform could be replicated by others, what sets ShipSupport apart is transparency in prices and the supply of product numbers and corresponding information. “Books can be traced on the basis of their unique ISBN number. We have adopted a similar practice for the parts on our platform”, comments Ms De Rover. “Rather than put our own ShipSupport number on a part, we use only the numbers of the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and provide all information about the product. The products vary from nuts and bolts costing just a few euros to, for example, cutter heads that cost EUR 70,000 each. With us, it is all about top tier brands and we show all OEM information. Everything is as transparent as possible.”

FOCUS ON THE NETHERLANDS

More than 250 customers from 62 countries are placing an increasing number of orders for parts via ShipSupport.

Digital twins ShipSupport presently offers customers three digital services: MyShop, MyFleet, and MyConnection. Customers can use MyShop to simply order their required parts. However, ShipSupport wants to offer customers additional services. With MyFleet, a customer can log in and see their entire fleet as digital twins of the real vessels. By clicking on a vessel, it is possible to navigate through it and see the parts, including drawings and manuals. This allows the customer to order exactly the right part, putting an end to incorrect orders. It also provides accurate insight into the expenditure per vessel. “Finally, we offer the product MyConnection; the latest addition to the service package”, voices

s u p e r y a c h t - i n d u s t r y. com

ShipSupport.indd 23

Ms De Rover. “With this, we automate the complete integral supply chain. We establish a connection between our product database and the customer’s ship management system. As a result, the customer always has up-to-date price data of all products at hand and can order them directly via our own system, without first requesting quotes. This saves a lot of time and costs.”

Expansion plans ShipSupport continues to go from strength to strength. In the first two months of 2020, turnover exceeded that of all of 2019. And Ms De Rover is already making new plans. “We are looking into the option of using ShipSupport for second-hand parts. We are also thinking about computer models that can predict when

parts need to be replaced based on the data in MyFleet. Owners can then carry out preventive maintenance.” Other expansion plans include the opening of new hubs around the world. All (consolidated) shipments are now sent from a central hub in the Netherlands, but Ms De Rover would like to open hubs in several continents. “It would be good to be close to the customer at all times, wherever they are. ShipSupport has a number of competitors worldwide, although we currently still work in different markets with our own customer base. This will change in future and we want to do everything we can to keep our front-runner position.”

B

.YOND is designed for long, comfortable cruises with a reduced environmental impact thanks to the E-Mode propulsion architecture developed for the shipyard by Siemens. The first model, B.YOND 37M with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, has enclosed volumes close to those of a 500 GT, 50m megayacht in just 37m, laid out across four decks. The lower deck is entirely for the crew, while the main deck is home to the owner and guest cabins. The upper deck is used as day area. In the 1990s, Benetti was the first shipyard to use fibreglass to build Navettes over 30m long; today it is the first major player in the industry to return to steel that is imprinted in its DNA, breathing life into the new generation of expedition yachts.

Spacious solutions Benetti’s B.YOND incorporates intelligent solutions that provide as much space as possible to the owner, guests, crew, and onboard services. The main and lower decks merge into the hull’s contours and are integrated into the yacht’s silhouette, making it possible to add a fourth deck with huge windows with unparalleled panoramic views of the sea. The main deck is dedicated to cabins for the owner and guests, while the living area starts on the upper deck. The lower deck is exclusively reserved for the crew and captain. To ensure

greater privacy and comfort on board, decks are connected by two separated stairs, one for the owner and his guests and one for the crew. A far bigger garage than usual is located on the main deck at the stern, with space for water toys such as two jet skis and two tenders (6.5m and 4.2m, for respectively the owner and crew) and with the option of hauling and launching from both sides thanks to folding gunwales. In the stern of the deck, a central staircase allows direct access to the beach area with sauna and a toy room for more equipment storage.

Seascapes The desire expressed by owners to enjoy the natural environment and seascapes around their yacht to the max inspired Benetti to build a boat with exterior lines that testify to the model’s innovative spirit. The yacht allows direct access from the dock to a little middle deck that acts as the hallway where a huge staircase leads to the stern terrace on the upper deck. The living area is situated on this deck from stern to bow and ensures that the horizon is never out of sight. From the stern, a first outdoor dining area complete with lateral protection is furnished with comfortable sofas and chairs, while moving forward and inside leads to the main saloon and a second dining area connected by sliding doors with the exterior bow lounge. The wheel deck contains a lounge with sliding

The sun deck consists of a dining area with pantry and an open air table sheltered by a hard top, plus a roomy sunbathing area. Like a true expedition yacht, B.YOND 37M is designed for long-distance cruises and has a hull that dominates the waves. More storage space than usual is provided and the water tanks are larger for longer cruises. The fuel and water tanks are capable of storing respectively 70,000 and 6,000 litres. Range at cruising speed is in excess of 5,000nm.

Hybrid propulsion The E-Mode powered by Siemens, specially designed for the Azimut|Benetti Group, comes from the idea to offer a hybrid propulsion that is simple to use, suitable for a wider target, and that effectively reduces the consumption during the yacht’s entire lifecycle. System integration is at the highest level, with the entire supply produced by the world’s top electrical equipment player. The diesel-electric propulsion system from Siemens, SISHIP EcoProp developed in Italy by the Siemens Marine Global Competence Centre, allows operation in four different configurations: Enhanced Comfort, ideal for night and coastal cruising with no emissions; Eco Cruise/hotel mode, for zero-emissions while cruising or at anchor; Extended Range, an option useful on very long trips to reduce consumption; Eco Transfer, for navigation with only one engine driving both shafts to reduce engine hours and improve performance. It allows a reduction of the engine hours and an improved performance.

ith the ZF 5200 A/V PTI, ZF Marine is expanding its portfolio with something unprecedented: the brand’s first hybrid transmission that can be installed in the ship in both V (V drive) and A (down angle) positions. Thanks to the wide range of transmission ratios and space-saving design, the ZF 5200 A/V PTI is ideally suited for many different types of marine vessels. Ship designers currently face a wide array of challenges. In the leisure yacht segment,

customers want as much living space as possible, while the boom in logistics and tourism requires ferries to make ever more space available for cargo. In response to more stringent environmental laws shipyards are looking for space-saving drive assemblies that also need to operate with the lowest possible emissions. Nevertheless, they do not want to make sacrifices in terms of performance and reliability. “We are now setting a new benchmark for these applications as well as others,” says

s u p e r ya ch t-i n d u s tr y. co m

17-06-20 14:26

MARINE PROPULSION & POWER GENERATION, HYBRID PROPULSION

We are now setting a new benchmark for these applications as well as others, Wolfram Frei, Head of Global Sales for the Commercial and Fast Ships product line at ZF, in regard to the ZF 5200 A/V PTI.

High performance with low emissions In the past, such a configuration has been difficult to bring about due to the packaging challenges of adding the additional input shaft for the PTI. With the ZF 5200 A/V PTI, the Group was able to successfully meet this challenge for the first time. It is thus possible for the additional power take-in to be coupled with an electric motor in both installation variants. At the same time, the marine transmission can transmit primary drive outputs of up to 2,462 kW (3500 HP). In combination with the wide transmission-ratio range (main drive: 2.588 to 4.250; power take-in: 2.5888 to 13.813), it guarantees high-performance operation with reduced emissions and noise for a wide range of ship types. These include leisure boats such as charter yachts and fast ships as well as commercial applications in ferry operations, governmental vessels or patrol boats. ZF has also improved manoeuvrability and crash-stop behaviour with the optionally integrated shaft brake.

Low-emission, powerful and compact: the ZF 5200 A/V PTI is the first ZF Marine hybrid transmission that can be installed in both V (V drive) and A (down angle) positions.

A space-saving design Another advantage is the transmission’s modular design. ZF relies on the proven individual components of the ZF 5000 series, which simplifies service and maintenance for the hybrid solution. The engineers at ZF were able to further reduce the size of the aluminium housing. The space-saving design gives

shipyards a great deal of latitude when drafting plans for new ships: yachts can have additional cabins as well as more spacious decks, while storage space can be more generously allotted on ferries.

FOCUS ON THE NETHERLANDS

Superyacht engineering reduced by four-and-a-half months C-JOB NAVAL ARCHITECTS HAS PUBLISHED NEW RESEARCH THAT

C-Job Naval Architects Dynamic Yacht Platform visualization.

SHOWS THE TIME-TO-MARKET OF SUPERYACHTS CAN BE REDUCED BY UP TO FOUR-AND-A-HALF MONTHS.

T

he ship design and engineering company C-Job Naval Architects believes it can achieve a superyacht engineering time reduction by engineering superyachts with what they call the ‘Dynamic Platform’. This allows owners to still fully customise their vessel, while reducing engineering time. The man behind this research is Stefan van der Harst, Junior Naval Architect at C-Job. He proposes disconnecting the engineering the vessel’s lower part from the upper part, looking at the trending superyacht size that lies between 50m and 80m. The upper part of the vessel is unique to each owner, whereas the lower part, the non-owner spaces, show great commonality. Mr van der Harst explains, “The lower part of the vessel houses ample technical and crew areas. Space claiming is exerted per area to get the right space reservation in the final design. However, a great portion of early design phases is consumed by iterating the design to solve all clashes and grid mismatches.” The dynamic platform is a tool that is based on scale-to-order philosophy. The platform translates the owner’s wishes into a finished basic design global model of the lower part of the ship. It does this in three stages, each stage more detailed than the previous one. A default model is chosen in the first stage. The second stage introduces modularity to cope with variations in arrangement. The final stage scales the model to the desired dimensions. Mr van der Harst continues, “By eliminating the space claim clashes and grid mismatches via the dynamic platform in an early stage of the design, a significant design time reduction of up to four-and-a-half months can be realised. This is half of the average time it currently takes to engineer the concept and basic design. More research is needed to make the dynamic platform a reality, yet the first insights are promising. And not just for concept and basic

design phases, as detail engineering could also benefit yachts out of the 50 - 80m range.”

Key findings Twelve yachts ranging from 50m to 81m were selected for analysing the general arrangements. The motorised displacement yachts were selected from varying shipyards to show that they all have similar ideas about arrangements. Eight reference vessels ranging between 40m and 109m were used for the construction principles. Typical construction layouts of the studied vessels reveal great commonality. Commonalities are found where the number and position of watertight bulkheads is consistent, the ducts and pipes are routed under and not through the girders, and the secondary stiffeners are longitudinally oriented. Great commonality is furthermore found in the longitudinal frame spacing, which allows for the distinction of two frame spacings that match the two arrangement layouts. The HVAC principles are mainly common on arrangement level, where the air-conditioning systems are split over different areas in the vessel. The same applies for the grey/black water systems, which also demonstrate commonality in their system layout. For HVAC, the system layout strongly varies between central heating or using fan-coils. The dynamic platform as a part of the whole ship imposes constraints to the way in which the superstructure is designed. These constraints are on a global level maximum dimensions, a maximum power consumption, a fixed total weight, and a fixed centre of gravity.

On a local topological level, the superstructure has to match the items penetrating the main deck. Some items such as AC units also need to be located around or near a specific position. A lead time reduction of three months can be achieved if the superstructure is assumed unaffected by the strategy. This is possible as the production of the superstructure usually takes three months less than the production of the hull. If the lead time of the superstructure’s design phase can also be reduced, then an engineering lead time reduction of four-and-ahalf months can be expected. Engineering lead time reduction in the design phase of superyachts can be supported by three tasks in the non-owner spaces below the main deck. First execute a standard base topology with standard construction, HVAC, and piping and cable principles. Secondly, make modular variations to the parts known to have more than one common function assignment. Other functional variations will have to be engineered-to-order, but to make the dynamic platform effective these new solutions should match the grid of the adjacent spaces so that the rest of the platform remains intact. The final task includes sizing the (standard) systems, including the construction, ducting, and piping using a parametric model with the overall ship length as main input. This parametric sizing also serves as a check for space claim, stability, water tightness and fire integrity, structural strength, and compliance of power plant between fuel supply and exhaust.

We mix a deep understanding of client needs with our knowledge of technology to create products that provide real benefits. experience usually means accessing the most recent innovations, which are only available in limited quantities. Having access to such products is a luxury only few can afford. Creating a new superyacht offers a unique opportunity to design according to your desires. Your preferences and needs determine the size, functions, and layout, surrounded by the best and highest quality materials, equipment and, technology available. Generations of yacht builders have developed trusted ways of building. But with technologies changing so rapidly, the integration of this technology into a yacht means that the yacht building process and operation of a yacht has become an entire skill of its own.

Introducing new possibilities VBH designs integrated systems, matching luxury technology options with controlled ways of building. New features, functions or experiences are bound to have an impact on a well-thought-out building process. Using new possibilities requires re-thinking, educated guesses, and an element of uncertainty.

VBH’s Product Marketing Manager Casper Kleiman.

Without innovation, things stay the same. No one benefits when you obstruct progress and superyachts should guide the way towards a more desirable way of living. Yachts serve as a showcase of the ultimate in luxury, which is why they are always changing. Not everything onboard needs to be the latest and greatest. Different clients value different luxury aspects. Some enjoy solitude and concert-level audio. Others prefer watching movies with family or hosting big parties with friends. Whatever their pleasure, the technology should reflect their wishes.

Trends in entertainment systems Introducing new possibilities requires close collaboration between yard and technology professionals. Innovation at VBH is organised into technology domains and led by a team of system architects. They know all the latest trends in the superyacht industry and how to translate and integrate these onboard yachts.

ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS

The specialists at VBH believe that aligning technology with the lifestyle desired by owners achieves the best result.

Yacht owners and their teams rightly tend to prefer the newest and most advanced technologies – the biggest screens with the highest resolution and contrast, loudest speakers, most advanced lighting systems. They want the ultimate in luxury, which requires the most exclusive products in the world. Owners personalise their yachts using technology in different ways, including amazing outdoor cinemas, concert-hall quality sound systems, and a true club experience. Recent innovations include The Wall of Samsung, a modular micro-LED display that delivers a revolutionary viewing experience with pure black, true colour and Samsung’s AI picture enhancement.

Hardware integration – development of new VBH innovations Superyachts are unique in the sense that they have numerous systems that must all interact within a close-knit environment. Making sure all these products, possibilities, and systems are properly connected, fully integrated, and functioning as they should requires great skills. High-level AV and IT design must be combined with an excellent understanding of hardware integration within yacht interiors and outstanding user experience design. Having everything

VBH.indd 35

come together just right certainly is a specialist art. Here are some of the recent trends related to the integration of systems at VBH.

HTML5 VBH embraced HTML5 to develop its new user interface. This allows for a completely new userfriendly layout, which operates on almost all control devices and optimises the AV systems on superyachts of VBH clients.

Instant Airplay VBH has developed an Instant Airplay system that recognises all devices in rooms onboard. This technology is like an invisible cable that streams content (music/movies) from your device to a speaker or television.

A software-based connection One of the key challenges during any yacht build is that technology evolves as the yacht is being constructed. You do not want a new yacht with old technology. While systems used to be physically connected, software-based connections are now taking the lead and significantly enhancing system flexibility in the process. A flexible software-based backbone makes it easier to connect new hardware later on in the build.

Framework 4 An example of a subtle change with an enormous impact is how everything is controlled onboard. Technology suppliers are constantly introducing new and evolving ways of automation, moving away from hardware to virtual machines. VBH designs and programs systems that are easy to install and deploy during the build process, offering owners and crew all the benefits without hindering the processes at the yard. To further ease this approach, the company has developed a unique way of programming systems with multiple programmers called FrameWork, which is currently in its fourth generation. FrameWork allows VBH to pool programmers so they can build on each other’s programming. This is usually difficult as individual programmers have their own preferred method. FrameWork removes this obstacle and the programming is much cleaner and leaner, resulting in a fast and fluid control.

ijssen’s entertainment department Tijssen Audio and Video Systems Integrator (TAV) is renowned for its custom-built equipment and installations on board of sailing and motor yachts. Ever since the inauguration of the audio and video systems department in 2007, over 30 projects have been successfully completed. Yet every first yacht is special, even after thirteen years. Moonen and Vitters Shipyard asked Tijssen Elektro to provide a state-of the-art audio and video entertainment system for their custombuilt projects. Soon afterwards, shipyards like Heesen Shipyard also requested Tijssen to supply an integrated entertainment system. “In a short amount of time, TAV became a reliable, fully-equipped and independent department of Tijssen Elektro and has experienced continuous growth over the years,”

comments Patrick van Eindhoven, Commercial Manager TAV. “It’s a small, but significant part of Tijssen Elektro’s service. Together with NavCom, the MPA alarm and monitoring system, and the electrical engineering division, Tijssen Elektro provides a fully integrated turnkey concept for the superyacht industry. Dozens of turnkey projects have already been realised at several shipyards”. In addition to catering to the superyacht industry, TAV also installs entertainment systems in residential houses and businesses. Because of their experience, they easily combine craftmanship, creativity, and accuracy in each and every project.

Customised The entertainment business has changed a lot throughout the years. Today’s audio and video

ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS systems are more customised than ever. Whether you want to enjoy your favourite romantic movie, listen to music or party all night long, software engineers from Tijssen are ready to assist and program the owners desires in one application on an iPad or iPhone. This system integration makes it possible to control the light switching or the HVAC, blinds, shades, and curtains for the ultimate entertainment experience. Tijssen prefers to use one application to control the entire system, for just one reason: to keep it simple!

Developments The world of entertainment is known to develop swiftly. The first basic systems only consisted of a set of speakers, an amplifier, and a television. Nowadays, the systems are very complex with Audio-Video distribution over IP, Flat Satellite antennas (Kymeta), outside cinema experiences, video walls, high-end digital audio amplifying, and so on. Not only is the technical standard very high, the client’s wishes also often exceed the standard. “TAV enjoys the challenge of seeking options to conceal speakers and audio within furniture, without losing any quality in performance”, comments Mr van Eindhoven. Entertainment equipment is also functionally used in the interior, like a designer piece. Televisions are hidden in the ceiling and revealed by a lift or can rotate 360 degrees for use in different areas on the yacht. Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is a hot term at the moment. The need to use own devices and own content is quickly growing. On board, guests and owners must be allowed to connect their own device and listen to their own content on the outside decks or other areas. That is why Wi-Fi and local Bluetooth are important and it is precisely these technical developments and

installed AV racks. The racks are already fully prepared in the workshop. Connecting the cabling on-site is therefore much faster and more efficient.

Thoroughly tested before installed All Audio and Video equipment is thoroughly tested and programmed in-house by TAV. Just to ensure that everything is functioning up to standard in the demanding yachting industry. Preparations are made by highly trained engineers in their well-equipped workshop. After completing the tests, a Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) is carried out. During this FAT, the entire system will be tested together with the customer, assuring a perfectly working system before distribution. TAV also features pre-

Connectivity Every yacht should feel like a luxurious home. But it is also an office, a children’s playground, a place to relax and enjoy life with family and friends. And of course everyone loves to work, play games, watch films, and listen to music without any interruptions. Entertainment systems thus closely interact with navigation and communication equipment. Tijssen Elektro has proven to be a reliable partner in the field for many years. They create a stable continuous connection for streaming TV and music at full sea or at the marina and or surrounding area. Integration of the aforementioned flat (Kymeta) antennas reduces satellite antennas and is a great addition to the aesthetics of ship design.

Aftersales All TAV’s entertainment equipment is flexible and of a high-quality standard. If necessary, the technical engineers will happily provide their support and answer any questions or assist in case of malfunctioning. There is also an option to receive remote assistance. “We are just one phone call away”, says Mr van Eindhoven, “and TAV is constantly closely monitoring any developments in the field to live up to the expectations of owners, both now and in the future!”

a total of six projects and sold seven newbuild projects. Damen Yachting currently has more than twenty newbuild and refit projects on the go, with six yachts up for delivery this year. “I am immensely proud to be leading Damen Yachting. In bringing the entire yachting portfolio together, we are further strengthening our operations, fortifying our in-house expertise and teams of specialist craftsmen and women, and guaranteeing maximum efficiency across the world’s best yacht-building facilities,” explains Rose Damen, Managing Director Damen Yachting. “We are all facing the current and future COVID-19 challenges, but this new organisational structure puts us in a strong position for success. The diversity within the portfolio is a reflection of what modern yachting is all about and I am very excited to be taking on this next chapter in my family’s shipbuilding history.”

Sarah Flavell, Damen Yachting’s Press Officer, comments, “Over the last decade, Damen’s yachting portfolio has grown significantly with a strong order book. It became a natural course of action to consolidate the yachting divisions within the group to form one Damen Yachting division as an umbrella for all of the group’s yachting brands. Amels has continued to see great success with the Limited Editions yachts and a move into full custom and Refit has seen a significant increase in the last five years. This new structural organisation is really part of the growth, success, and strong order book and is something we have been working on and planning internally for some time.” Asked about the benefits and challenges of uniting in Damen Yachting, Ms Flavell replies, “The benefits are multiple, from the diversity within the portfolio to the combined forces in

terms of facilities, expertise, and workforce. Our clients have such a portfolio available to them that really can suit their specific yachting needs, albeit a full custom Amels, a proven Limited Editions design, refit or a yacht designed for exploration or support as part of a wider fleet. The challenges have been minimal. There are some logistical issues associated with centralising a head office location, but the rest are really all benefits. We are bringing teams, services, and facilities together under one division aimed at offering the client maximum benefit.” As for the future expectations of the new Damen Yachting division, Ms Flavell explains, “Being able to offer this diversity that meets the broadest of yachting needs ensures we are well-positioned to meet the future demands of our clients. We have the capacity, facilities, and

heritage behind us to ensure Damen Yachting has everything in place to continue to grow, meet the demands of the industry, and lead the way in modern yacht building.” Damen Yachting’s head office will operate out of the Vlissingen City yard, home to the Amels’ production facilities. The company benefits from a 500-strong workforce, including inhouse design and engineering teams, project management teams, and a Customer Care team. Other Damen Yachting locations include Vlissingen East, Damen Yachting Gdynia, and project sites in Damen Shipyards Antalya, Damen Shipyards Galati, and access to more than 35 Damen shipyards worldwide.

uests and owners aboard the 87m Feadship superyacht Lonian are now enjoying even greater convenience on the water. The new Hodor Alu Cat shadow vessel is tailor-made for the needs of guests aboard the superyacht, transferring guests safely, extending the list of leisure activities available, and offering loads of space for the ferrying crew members or extra supplies and equipment. At 66m long, the vessel accommodates twenty crew and staff members, with sufficient deck and storage space for supplies and sports equipment. The design even boasts a submarine garage and helipad. Hodor was designed by Australian company Incat Crowther and built by Spanish shipyard Astilleros ArmĂłn in their fully-enclosed Burela location.

The vessel is powered by two MTU 16V 4000 M73L main engines, rated at 2832 kW output and reaching maximum speeds of 22.5 knots and able to cruise at 14 knots on long-haul passages of up to 5,500 nautical miles. The MTU SCR system for exhaust gas purification is specially adapted to MTU engines and complies with the current IMO III emissions directive, reducing polluting NOx emissions by a significant margin. Thanks to the efficient multihull design, only 160,000 liters of fuel are needed to achieve the vessel’s maximum range. The hull has an inverted bow, a carrying capacity of 240t, and a low propeller pull of 3.1m. Particularly created for the significant reduction of NOx emissions, MTU uses a technology

MTU Hybrid systems for ships Expected as of 2021, Rolls-Royce will launch a range of hybrid ship propulsion systems in series onto the market. The propulsion systems will also be made available for yachts, work boats, and ferries, in a power range extending from around 1,000 kilowatts to 4,000 kilowatts per powertrain.

As per 2021, systems incorporating MTU Series 2000 engines combined with variable electrical power will be launched on the market and will cover a power range of between approximately 1,000 and 2,200 kilowatts per power train. Rolls-Royce will then gradually extend its portfolio, with the addition of hybrid systems based on the power delivered by MTU Series 4000 engines and variable electrical power that will cover a power range of between approximately 1,000 and 4,000 kilowatts per powertrain. Rolls-Royce will focus on PTI solutions. At one PTI solution, the gearbox is connected to the diesel engine via a clutch. An electric motor is attached to this PTI gearbox that can be coupled or decoupled as needed. For yachts or passenger ships, a high power output on the one hand and a significant increase in comfort levels resulting from the silent, vibration and emission-free cruising on the other, are certainly of interest. Alongside high power output, hybrid propulsion systems can provide yet other economic benefits for applications with very high requirements in terms of speed and performance or a widely varying demand for power. Temporarily entirely emission-free cruising is possible when operating in the battery mode. Another important economic advantage for operators is the option to optimise the utilisation of all components involved in the system via intelligent and optimised system control and integration, thus extending maintenance intervals.

called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). SCR is a technology that injects urea into the exhaust stream, where a catalyst then helps to convert nitrogen pollutants into harmless nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor.

Bilgin’s Tatiana In February 2020, the first hull of Bilgin 263 series, Tatiana – with model name NB75 – entered sea trials phase. As the largest yacht ever built by a Turkish shipyard so far, the superyacht has more than met performance expectations during her sailing in Istanbul. With the first trials made for the yacht’s twin MTU engines, the yacht achieved the expected maximum speed of 19+ knots. Tatiana demonstrated a smooth driving behaviour during the trials. The Turkish shipyard Bilgin is currently building three 80m yachts, all fitted with MTU IMO III propulsion systems. The Bilgin 263’s twin MTU Series 4000 V16 engines can power it up to a top speed of 20 knots, making it faster than its predecessors. Its MTU SCR system ensures the

yacht stays within IMO Tier III exhaust emission limits. The integrated IMO III solution – consisting of an SCR exhaust gas aftertreatment system perfectly tuned to the propulsion system – offers flexible installation options and is easy to maintain. It requires a minimum of installation space and features an excellent power to weight ratio. The MTU SCR system is fully controlled, with real-time nitrous oxide measurement both before and after SCR, enabling the catalyst volume to be varied with great precision. The optimal functioning of this system makes the Bilgin 263 a very environmentally-friendly boat that is suitable for all waters. “We are proud of how Bilgin Yachts realise these megayacht projects and of course of the fact that they choose MTU as their partner to power these huge projects. They were the first global MTU partner for SCR application on yacht segment and we are excited to achieve more first times with them” voices Ali Güzel, Managing Director of MTU Turkey. IMO Tier III, an exhaust gas emissions directive

published by the International Maritime Organization, means that NOx emissions within certain areas (known as NECA: NOx Emission Control Areas) must be complied with. MTU is a product and solution brand of Rolls Royce.
