NEWS IN BRIEF ABB to enable smooth sailing for a 100m+ superyacht ABB has secured an integrated power and propulsion systems order to enable smooth and efficient operations on board the superyacht to be constructed by the German yacht builder Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard (A&R). The family owned shipyard has been located in Lemwerder since its establishment in 1907. Scheduled for delivery in 2025, the 100m+ vessel will be one of the largest ever constructed at A&R’s yard in Lemwerder, Northern Germany. The extensive scope of ABB systems on board will include Azipod® propulsion, Onboard DC Grid™, a 500kWh Energy Storage System (ESS) and Power and Energy Management System (PEMS™), whose combined and fully integrated capabilities will reduce emissions, noise and vibration. The entire system can be integrated with remote diagnostics services and 24/7 support. The increased efficiency achieved by the Onboard DC Grid™ and Azipod® propulsors will extend the yacht’s operational range and help reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Meanwhile, the energy storage and management system will optimise power consumption and enhance operational flexibility using peak shaving.

Azimut opens new embassy in Sweden Azimut Yachts is proud to announce the brand’s collaboration with Marinmäklarna AB as its new dealer for Sweden. The company led by Niclas Sjögren, a point of reference for the most demanding Swedish owners who will be able to choose the construction excellence of Azimut Yachts, has over 30 years’ experience in the yacht business and offers numerous services to an extensive network of owners who have relied on its professional approach for years. Azimut Yachts appoints Marinmäklarna AB as the brand’s new dealer in Sweden, choosing a company with a wealth of experience in the yachting industry and operations in multiple areas: from consultancy during the buying process, to assistance and support services and even hospitality. These services are made even more efficient by a broad-based presence in the region and a deep understanding of the Swedish yacht market.
Despite the Covid-19 crisis, 2021 was the best year ever for Cantiere Rossini. The turnover of the new refit shipyard situated in Pesaro in the Adriatic reached unexpected highs with over 30 yachts choosing it as their refit destination. 2021 was also the year marked by the completion of the shipyard’s renovation works and its new repainting facilities for the 50m yacht market. 2022 also started strong with three new yachts arriving at the shipyard during the first weeks of January. To date, twelve yachts are currently sustaining important refit works at Cantiere Rossini, two of which are undergoing paint works of the hulls and superstructures in the repainting facilities that were inaugurated last September 2021. Cantiere Rossini’s clients come from all over the Mediterranean basin, from Spain to Turkey and range from 24 to 50 metres in length.

Amsterdam juiced up by new 71m Feadship At the end of January, the undocking of the 71m Juice took place from the giant Feadship construction hall in the Dutch capital. Observers were mesmerised by the beauty of this timeless Feadship: a blend of polished stainless steel, glass and teak offer a classic feel while the exterior lines showcase a sleek and captivatingly contemporary elegance. The owner of Juice, a repeat client for Feadship, has worked tirelessly with the designers at RWD to ensure a refined exterior flow with soft lines and distinctive creases. All unnecessary elements have been removed to generate an elegant yet masculine look. Another instantly visible aspect is the walk-around superstructure along with a striking coherence between the decks on a superyacht that synthesises Feadship’s seasoned ability to meet the most stringent demands.

Incat Tasmania awarded contract for 76m high speed catamaran Australian high speed craft specialist Incat Tasmania is pleased to announce a contract to build a new fast ferry for Daezer Construction of South Korea. NEWS IN BRIEF World record for Valdenassi Valdenassi – based in Arma di Taggia and specialising in the supply of outdoor furniture for yachts for over twenty years – has inaugurated 2022 with a world record. Its owner, Emanuele Maria Valdenassi has constructed the largest teak grating in the world. This remarkable work of art and ingenuity is 460cm long, 180cm wide, 3.5cm thick and weighs 120kg. However, contrary to its customary use, this grating won’t be sailing on board some luxury vessel. Instead, it will be the tabletop in a home. Of course, we’re not talking about just any home, it’s for a royal palace, the address of which is top secret, as is the name of the person who lives there. The only hint we can reveal is that the mysterious client is an emir. “We felt particularly proud to receive this request, not just as a company but also as Italians”, says Emanuele Maria Valdenassi.

NEWS IN BRIEF Black Shark Her striking design makes Black Shark one of the most interesting superyacht projects at present. Nobiskrug and the Owner have now signed the contract for the continued construction of the vessel (new build project 793). With the third order since the economic restart the Rendsburg shipyard stays on its successful course since the takeover by Tennor Group. Investor Lars Windhorst, who was significantly involved in the negotiations for the Black Shark, emphasizes that this success is proof of Nobiskrug’s capabilities. The current order book significantly contributes to the new orientation of the shipyard. In summer 2023, Black Shark will be handed over to her Owner, who wishes to remain unnamed. Imperial Yachts acts as broker and Owner’s representative. The Black Shark is already awaiting its completion in the superyacht building shed, Nobiskrug’s 160m long covered and air-conditioned dry dock. Under controlled conditions the interior and exterior outfitting will be finalised.

NEWS IN BRIEF Aquarius II 56m Aquarius is ‘close to perfect’, her owners simply want a larger yacht – and an even more impressive performance. It is a great compliment when owners value the experience of their yacht so highly that the only material change they want is to build a larger version of it, with exactly the same team. Yet that is the story behind the decision of the experienced husband and wife owners of the world cruising ketch Aquarius (56m, Royal Huisman, 2018) to create a stunning new 65m ‘big sister’, Aquarius II. The team (described by an independent commentator as “some of the most experienced and talented brains in the superyacht world”) comprises owners’ project manager Godfrey Cray, Dykstra Naval Architects, interior designer Mark Whiteley and superyacht builder Royal Huisman.

PALMA SUPERYACHT VILLAGE
Palma Superyacht Village 2022 This year, the Palma International Boat Show will be held from 28 April to 1 May. It will be the opening event of the Mediterranean nautical season and one of the most important shows in the sector. The show decorates the seaside promenade of the city of Palma with over 600 boats, creating an unmissable opportunity for professionals and nautical enthusiasts alike. T
he 2021 Palma International Boat Show was the industry’s first show to welcome back the public after the pandemic. After a major reorganisation to guarantee a COVID-free event, last year´s show was a resounding success in number of both exhibitors and visitors.
Palma SuperYacht Village
Palma Superyacht Village, previously known as Palma Superyacht Show, is an integral part of the Palma International Boat Show (PIBS). It is one of the few industry-owned and operated yacht shows aimed to bring the visitor closer to yachting and offer any services a yacht owner might require, provided by trusted and well-established companies, in a relaxed but professional atmosphere. Whereas PIBS is the hub for the latest shipyard presentations and services related to yachts under 24m, Palma Superyacht Village displays a selection of superyachts above 24m for sale and charter, as well as hosts an exhibition of nautical services available to superyachts. Within the dock-side exhibition there is also a separate area dedicated to Refit & Repair, representing the many specialist companies that make the Balearic Islands one of the world´s leading destinations for refit and maintenance of boats. Because of this, the islands have the necessary infrastructure to carry out repair and maintenance work on both small and large boats. In fact in Palma alone, more than 1000 projects a year are carried out on boats over 24m, according to the data

collected by the Balearic Marine Cluster. The exhibition is located in the Moll Vell area in the heart of Palma de Mallorca, right in front of the majestuous, landmark cathedral of Palma and the bustling old town with its restaurants, outdoor cafes and quirky boutiques. With its laid back, uncomplicated and fun atmosphere, the Palma Superyacht Village is the perfect place to discover yachting.
Brokerage
From pared-down elegance to sumptuous luxury, from stately classics of the bygone eras to the latest yacht designs brimming with innovation and green technology, the selection of pre-owned yachts at the Palma Superyacht Village offers plenty of alternatives to compare for those seriously on the lookout for a yacht of their dreams. At Palma Superyacht Village, as an industry owned and organized event, only renowned brokerage companies are allowed to exhibit at the event, and you will be assessed by experienced and knowledgeable brokers every step of the way. As the yacht market changes continuously, especially now with the post-pandemic surge in yachting, details of available yachts on display will be published only very close to the event. In the meantime, you can browse the list of exhibiting brokerages, have a look at their websites and get in touch with the brokers. They may be able to give some information as to which yachts are likely to be exhibited in Palma, and book you an appointment in advance.
This year, the Palma International Boat Show will be held from 28 April to 1 May.

lokun confirms the success of the dynamic and efficient design of Tankoa’s S501 platform. The series, which started with Vertige and was quickly followed by her hybrid sister-ship, Bintador, is still the shipyard’s bestseller that focuses on building flawless yachts, dedicating time and attention to its products and customers who always play an active role in the process.
Rigorous stylistic coherency
Olokun’s exterior and layout were crafted to deliver a rigorous stylistic coherency with a clean, contemporary look. It has also maintained its predecessor’s signature features like fold-down terraces in the master stateroom on the forward main deck, a large sundeck with bar and hot-tub and a spacious beach club with spa in the transom. However, there are some important variations, following the owner’s specific requests. The main deck

aft, for example, is dedicated exclusively to a spacious lounge for relaxation with the dining room relocated to the upper deck. The side-loading tender garage in the stern has been converted into an extension of the beach club as the owner prefers to use a 15m chase boat (although it is fully equipped with telescopic crane to fulfil its original function). And, in addition to the four guest suites on the lower deck, the master stateroom features a private office that can be converted into an extra cabin.

Maximum flexibility
“As a boutique shipyard we wanted to offer maximum flexibility to tailor the yacht to owner’s personal needs”, says Vincenzo Poerio, CEO of Tankoa Yachts. “The result is a perfect balance between aesthetics and functionality. Olokun is a fully customized yacht both in terms of GA and interior decoration and thanks to its elegant exterior lines it will be enjoyed by the owner for the next 10 years.” Another example of client customization is the elegant black hull and metallic grey superstructure. Dark hulls easily overheat in the sunshine, so to meet the owner’s request and achieve optimal results Tankoa specified special Awlgrip coatings that reduce the temperature of the metal hull by as much as 10°C.

Interior
Olokun’s exclusive interior decor by Casa Dio Miami/London – a US-based studio with experience in the residential, aviation, and marine sectors – is founded on three distinguishing principles: Simple, clean lines inspired by Japanese
design, bespoke, one-off furniture pieces created specially by the Casa Dio Miami/ London, and top-quality fabrics from prestigious Italian brand Loro Piana. Casa Dio Miami/London focused on developing the interior and furniture design, based specifically on the owner’s tastes,

resulting in a clever and beautifully balanced interplay centered around brushed oak in three different shades: natural oak, Tokyo Black and Bitter Grey. The three colors are alternated for the vertical trims and ceilings, a motif that runs harmoniously through all the decks. It also appears in the bathrooms where it is paired with the toughness and elegance of Compac high-tech quartz for the Calacatta and black marquina marble trims, and in the cabins where it creates a delicious mix with jute and wool carpeting by Loro Piana. All the furniture pieces were custom designed and manufactured by the Casadio craftsmen who have dedicated their lives to manufacturing bespoke furniture.
Timeless quality
“We believe in innovation through the unusual minimalist but contemporary use of interior finishes and furniture”, says Dio Rodriguez, founder of the Casa Dio Miami/ London studio. “The use of neutral colours throughout the carpentry and furniture allowed for a high contrast and timeless quality.” High up on the owner’s wish list was a hammam lounge and relaxation area as close as possible to the ocean, which led to the challenge of maximizing the beach club space within the 499GT volume

of the 50m yacht. “In order to bring the owners requirements to a reality, we transformed the beach club space to create the hammam and also converted the tender garage into a lounge where the owners would find additional space for relaxation”, says Rodriguez. “By doing this we were able to not just meet but also exceed the owner’s expectations. The owner further requested the main salon to be as large as possible, which is why it was decided to move the dining room to the upper deck, where there are two dining tables, one interior and one on the open aft deck, which can both seat a full complement of guests. “As we already know from experience, the interiors of yachts are often quite small and we always suggest to the owners to create open environments where they can enjoy the view and the interiors at the same time”, says Mr Rodriguez. “We focused on making the entire interior of the yacht convey a sense of residential life by reflecting the exterior and transforming the interior into a complete nautical experience.”

REFIT, REPAIR & CONVERSIONS
BYD Group performed a complex interior refit of 45m superyacht Lady Nora.
Lady Nora refit Bravo Yacht Design Group or BYD Group (previously known as Barcelona Yacht Design Group) was founded in 2004. Based in the Spanish yachting hubs of Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca, it offers a complete design and naval architecture service for new construction as well as refits, working in partnership with yacht builders or directly with yacht owners themselves. ecently, BYD Group performed a complex interior refit of 45m superyacht Lady Nora, which showcases BYD’s extensive skills. The refit work on 45m superyacht Lady Nora is nearing completion to detailed new designs from Spain’s BYD. The Palma de Mallorca-based naval architect was asked to remodel the guest cabins, galley and the entire crew area, redesigning the air conditioning system in the process. As a full-service yacht design studio, BYD’s capabilities are the perfect fit for this large, technically demanding project

A little tired
The first step was to strip the crew areas on the lower deck right back to the boat’s aluminium frames and hull plates. Then the team could use its market-leading experience with 3D scanning to map the spaces as they really were. Armed with this incredibly precise digital image of the interior volumes, BYD could get to work designing a series of contemporary, new spaces for the 1998 Broward yacht. “The boat was in good shape, but a little tired inside, so we were asked to make the crew accommodation more comfortable”,
explains Tià Simó, Principal Designer at BYD. “The owner and his captain both had the foresight to know that a happy crew would make for a better guest experience. Better space utilisation would also allow us to include two additional crew cabins.”
Bright, clean, and modern styling
When she’s relaunched this summer, Lady Nora will be able to accommodate eight crew in four single cabins and two doubles, plus another one dedicated to the Captain. They are all styled with a new

light décor that emphasises the space and makes the most of the natural light that enters through the portholes. Light Elegant Oak veneer cabinetry is nicely balanced with Amtico Nordix Oak, antique-wood effect, mid-grey flooring. The look extends to a spacious new crew mess, the dining area for the crew, capable of seating ten people, with TVs and easy access to a capable new laundry. The brief also called for a refit on the children’s cabin, which BYD re-designed
with twin Pullman beds. The backrests of two long sofas on either side of the cabin fold up to create two hanging bunks above the two beds. BYD proposed a classic mix of dark walnut, warm teak and hard-wearing woven carpet for a refined feel. Storage was built into the walls and BYD designed a clever desk whose chair stows securely inside to make this a childfriendly space. For the guest cabins and ensuite bathrooms, the aim was to freshen up a dark, heavy finish which

dated from the boat’s original build in 1998. BYD selected a series of light, gently patterned fabrics to brighten walls, headboards and blinds, plus a warm beige carpet. The ambient lighting has also been modernised with efficient, warm LED units. Coupled with white interiors to the gloomy wardrobes and similar treatment in the bathrooms, these spaces have been transformed.

The other major focus for the refit has been the galley and pantry areas of the boat, which were also stripped back to the frames. BYD came up with a two-pronged approach here, using woody accents from the saloon dining

area to match the pantry, while making the galley itself a much more modern, functional space. In the pantry, storage units are finished with a Formica that reproduces the dark wood panelling of the saloon, keeping sightlines harmonious through the swinging pantry door. Meanwhile, in the galley, the styling reflects the crew areas below, with the same use of antique-effect flooring. The work surfaces are in brushed stainless steel – combining low maintenance with high heat and spill tolerance. The cabinetry is a refined dark grey called nickel sprinkle. “As well as bringing the styling up to date, we have improved the layout of the pantry and galley areas for the benefit of the chef,” explains Mr Simó. “We have moved the sinks further from the induction hob and introduced a new serving unit which makes it quicker and easier to dress plates and get them out to waiting guests.”
well beyond styling,” says Mr Simó. “Our broad experience allowed us to combine the understanding of complex systems with a refined new look to create fresh guest and crew spaces that are a pleasure to use for all the senses.” The refit work was carried out at Astilleros de Mallorca in close collaboration with the BYD team and Tekamar Carpenters. It began last season and will be finished in time for summer cruising. i. bydgroup.com

Fresh air
The last piece of the jigsaw has been to improve the ventilation systems on board. The Captain was clear that air renewal was too slow and left some areas of the boat with a musty atmosphere. While no structural work was required here, BYD had to model new cut-outs in the bulkheads to carry the extra ducting required. “This is technical work that goes

rkadia was sold in October 2020 by David Johnson of Denison Yachting, who introduced the client and worked closely with Thom Conboy of Heesen USA, and the sales team at the shipyard in Oss to seal the deal. “We look forward to seeing Arkadia join her sister ship Omaha on our side of the ocean”, says Mr Conboy. “American customers appreciate the quality of a Dutch pedigree yacht, and the Heesen fleet is growing in North America and the Bahamas.”
A go-anywhere, luxury superyacht
Arkadia is the second yacht in Heesen’s 50m steel displacement class, whose exterior lines by Clifford Denn combine a purposeful, muscular profile with the
elegance of Dutch superyacht design. Her luxurious interior is by Reymond Langton. Arkadia’s full-displacement, round-bilge hull design, with its drag-cheating bulbous bow, promises superlative cruising comfort and seakeeping. Her top speed is 15 knots, and she has a transoceanic range of 3,800nm at a cruising speed of 13 knots. Perfectly balanced rudders ensure excellent closequarters manoeuvrability, and at just under the 500GT threshold, she is also remarkably spacious for her length. Every area of the yacht has been conceived to deliver the best possible experience for everyone on board. Ten guests can be accommodated in five luxurious suites, while her generous deck spaces will also ensure maximum
enjoyment of the great outdoors, from alfresco dining to relaxing in the sun or getting close to the water in her lavish beach club. Arkadia is a beautiful addition to the fast-growing Heesen fleet and is sure to turn heads wherever she goes.
Yacht delivery in a pandemic Delivering a superyacht during a pandemic is not a straightforward task. When the first Covid19 safety measures were announced, Heesen appointed a dedicated team to manage the handover from the shipyard to the owner and his staff. With travel and meetings disrupted by the pandemic, this service has proved itself invaluable. The Heesen team is focused on assisting and advising the yacht’s management company and her crew in dealing with all the regulatory

and certifying authorities. The handover team also includes commissioning engineers, shipyard captains, and dedicated interior experts who work closely with the yacht’s crew. Making this transfer of knowledge as seamless as possible ensures the smooth operation of the yacht, ready for the owner and his guests to step aboard.
Arkadia is the first of five Heesen yachts that were scheduled for delivery in 2021.
A true bluewater motoryacht
This 50m steel-hulled, displacement yacht combines timeless elegance with the refinement and speed to travel the globe and explore new horizons. Blending practicality with luxurious detail, the design has been optimised to deliver the largest possible volume while still remaining under the 500GT threshold. At 50m this is a true bluewater motor yacht, featuring a displacement steel hull designed by Heesen’s in-house team of naval architects and engineers. Its cuttingedge design features a bulbous bow, which allows her to glide through the water with ease. Built upon Heesen’s proven technical platform, Clifford Denn has imagined a sophisticated exterior design that is paired with generous outdoor deck space. A 98m2 sun deck complete with Jacuzzi, al fresco dining area and sun loungers promise the best of the yachting lifestyle. For entertaining, guests are welcomed to the 74m2 aft deck, an area complemented by the part-enclosed sky lounge.
Functional features meet innovative details
Working closely with Heesen, Clifford Denn took elements of inspiration from classic automotive design. Her traditional peak bow with reversed sheer line is seamlessly incorporated into her profile, while a military style wheelhouse offers a touch of masculinity. The end result offers timeless appeal. Heesen aims to create an interior that truly makes a yacht a home. Therefore the interior by Reymond Langton Design boasts comfortable yet elegant spaces throughout. Its contemporary design is characterised by clean lines and surfaces. The studio selected a warm, neutral palette which is tastefully punctuated with vibrant bursts of colour from bespoke works of art and furnishings. i. heesenyachts.com

Creativity, enthusiasm, and passion are important prerequisites for any success story – and they definitely are for Yachtlite. When the company first presented their ideas at Boot Düsseldorf in 2003, they didn’t dare to imagine setting such trends in the yachting sector. Neither did they anticipate that their illuminated names and logos would be implemented many thousands of times throughout the world. ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF YACHTLITE.

Steady and strong as ever
When looking back at the past two years, the Yachtlite team is very happy with the way they handled the COVID situation. Fortunately, no one in the team got infected, so they feel blessed. In 2021, they equipped and successfully completed a 100+ meter newbuild with a great variety of Yachtlite products, and although there were hardly any relevant trade fairs or events compared to previous years, many big and smaller new customers found their way to Yachtlite. All in all, business has been going well.
Yachtlite offers several solutions for the yacht industry: • Letterings and Logos – High-quality illuminated letterings and logos for motor and sailing yachts. • FormLite – Direct and indirect light with custom-made LED elements for furniture, ceiling protrusions, stairways, and steps. • FloorLite & RoomLite – Freely shaped and homogeneously illuminated surfaces and floor inlays for the interior and exterior of a yacht. • StairLite – Individually designed stair lights for stairways, gangboards or even in the cockpit • ISPS Light – Security light for temporary use at the railing. Enables quick mounting and alignment of the powerful LED lamp. • FloodLite / Underwaterlights – Powerful LED Underwater floodlights from Lumishore UK
Stefan Wienecke, Managing Director of Yachtlite, shares, “Recently, the Project Manager of a large Dutch shipyard visited us for a successful FAT. He emphasized that he could tell that our entire Yachtlite team is on fire, because all our products have been made with a great deal of love and attention to detail. This feedback made us very happy, because it is so true!” Kristin Schädel, Head of Communications, says, “We made the first Yachtlite product in 2002 and at that moment, the Yachtlite brand was founded. Since then, our company has grown from an initially pure illuminated ‘letter manufacturer’ to leading manufacturer of custom-made lighting solutions for ships of all kinds. Currently, thousands of custom products are installed worldwide, illuminating harbours and, often also, lighting up hearts. Naming a ship is often an emotional decision and therefore an eminently important detail. Every name, every new product is a prototype build, never mass production. In 2022, there will be many projects worth seeing, not in the least thanks to our creative customers and inspiring yacht designers.”
Successful collaborations
For many years, Yachtlite has been successfully working with some major players in the yacht industry, such as Nobiskrug, Lumishore, Abeking & Rasmussen, Isa Yachts, Merk & Merk Jahte Servis, Lürssen, and Blohm & Voss. Axel Franz, Outfitting Engineer at Nobiskrug Superyachts shares, “Yachtlite has supplied custom illuminated ship names for challenging new yacht build projects. We are highly satisfied with the quality of the technical solutions as well as their implementation on board and appreciate Yachtlite’s reliability and competence.”

A word from the founders We talked to Directors Mike Brandt and Eef Kwakkel to find out more about some of the challenges the company had to face during the pandemic and of course to get a sneak peek of some exciting future projects that Lift Emotion is working on. How has the pandemic impacted the business and how has the company handled that?
Lift Emotion’s new 20 x 30 meter assembly hall.
Without a doubt, we are most proud of our new assembly hall in Meppel. We received the keys to the new hall last year in July.
Mr Brandt comments, “Like any other company, ours was also impacted. In our case, installing elevators on ships requires the most work. We have managed to adjust that process during the pandemic, by pre-assembling a lot here in Meppel and sending the product to the client in one or two pieces, so that clients could install it themselves with remote help from us. In other projects, we offered remote assistance and we even remotely assisted with the assembly of an elevator via video calls.”
assembly hall in Meppel. We received the keys to the new hall last year in July. It allows us to assemble our elevator shafts and distribute them including the glass to the yachts and residences of our clients.” How do you play into sustainability in your products?
Mr Brandt says, “We have been working with variable frequency drives for our elevators, which allow for a reduced energy consumption of 30 to 50%. We also aim to always build as light as possible, yet strong and solid.” We cannot help but be a little bit curious about upcoming projects. Could you give us a sneak peek?
Both Mr Brandt and Mr Kwakkel smile while they share, “At the moment, we have three round elevator shafts in our assembly hall. They will be placed in an 80m long yacht, a 120m long yacht, and one in a private home in France.”
What are you most proud of when looking back at last year?
According to Mr Kwakkel, “Without a doubt, we are most proud of our new ranging involvement with international clients and certification bureaus. The designs, builds and implementation of elevators come in all types and sizes for a wide range of needs and solutions. Some highly creative people work in the various disciplines at Lift Emotion, including naval architects, which is why the company is regularly commissioned by companies with specific technical challenges that cannot be solved elsewhere.
Special engineering
The company takes great pride in bringing together precision technology, extensive experience, and state-of-the-art techniques to create special engineering solutions other than elevators. A good example is their Lifebuoy Shooting Unit (LSU), the latest version of which can be placed behind a hatch; when needed, the buoy and smoke pot shoot out of the bulwark. Another recent innovation which has been installed on various yachts is their pop-up elevator design, integrated into the superstructure to deliver problem-free access to the sun deck and/or beach club.

informing the original design process and then introducing new perspectives and techniques to her imagery, Pohjaniemi and Nuvolari Lenard have enhanced the way this remarkable design is presented, bringing a level of artistry that is completely new to yachting. The result is a design that is more beautiful, evocative and accessible than has ever been seen on a superyacht before.
“In architecture, car design or sculpture, an object is first born from the mind of its creator, who portrays what they are visualizing. And if you are not lucky enough to be able to take in that building or piece of art in person, the next great way to experience it is through photography and videography. In this case, that object is presented to you through the eyes of the photographer, Dan Lenard.

with their control of the light, the angles, the situation and so on. The photographer’s work is an extension – or an amplification – of the original creator’s process,” explains Dan Lenard. “For our collaboration with Jarmo on Centerfold, we inverted that creative process. Rather than waiting for him to capture the physical yacht with his lens, we invited him to work with us from the early stages of design, to exclusively manage the yacht’s beauty from his perspective as a world-class photographer. We created an initial yacht design that was beautiful to us, to our vision, and he then brought his refined professional eye and creative influence.”

photographs to create the perfect backdrop. The process has parallels with a photographer styling the photoshoot of a supermodel, so the final image represents his creative vision for the unique beauty of the subject – whether a human model or a yacht design.” “This is something that has never been seen before in the superyacht world. We are not creating a design simply as a means to an end of that yacht being built; we are putting the maximum creativity into the design itself. It blurs the lines between yacht design and art, so that the enjoyment can be experienced by anyone who sees the images, not just the person who ultimately owns the yacht. You could say we are democratizing the enjoyment of superyachts through this process.”
Drawn to the horizon
Although the internationally renowned photographer is best known for his work in the fashion and commercial arenas, Pohjaniemi has been drawn to the allure

Nuvolari Lenard.indd 41
of the ocean and yachts for much of his career. He explains his attraction to the project: “When I look at the ocean, I feel a power that draws me towards the horizon, and I have always sensed there was more beyond the shoreline that was calling my name. This oceanic fantasy became a reality when Dan Lenard invited me to collaborate in the development process of his newest project, Centerfold. He asked me to create unique new visuals that would be executed to the same level of perfection as his design masterpiece. Our work creates the perfect harmony and balance between the yacht and the ocean, elevating them both simultaneously. It was a dream project for any visionary, as I was able to explore the highlights, contours and shadows in my creative process. “Centerfold is a fantastic playground and, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful superyachts ever designed. She is not the Centerfold of the Month, she is the Centerfold of the Century; the main attraction. I feel privileged to have been
able to capture her pure essence in the most beautiful light and surroundings; the only place that is fitting to call her birthplace.” To be built in high tensile steel and aluminium, she would have a colossal displacement of 16,800GT and make use of the latest technology to deliver ecologically-sensitive low emissions when the surroundings call for them, or impressive speeds should the need arise.
A spectrum of sustainability
Beyond the yacht’s stunning features and remarkable proportions, which are entirely feasible and would make her one of the largest yachts ever built, Centerfold has been designed to operate along a full spectrum of propulsion profiles. Owners will be able to modify the yacht’s operational modes to suit their surroundings and needs. The zeroemission, full-electric stealth mode is perfectly suited to cruising grounds with higher environmental sensitivity and stringent emissions regulations. Alternatively, the high-speed conventional propulsion mode delivers speeds of over 35 knots, driven by powerful 100,000hp engines. And of course, a number of modes in between will be available to adjust Centerfold’s performance based on circumstances. i. nuvolari-lenard.com

MB92 Barcelona facilities cover a total area of 124,000m2 including a 220m dry-dock, a syncrolift able to dry dock vessels up to 2,000t and 70m LOA, a 150t Travelift, docking repair quays with capacity to berth fourteen yachts up to 220m, 4,800t Shiplift for nine yachts up to 110m LOA. Other than that, MB92 Barcelona is continually working to identify and deliver more sustainable solutions and is committed to leading change throughout our industry towards a greener future.
New Fittings centre
Recently, MB92 Barcelona announced the start of operations at their new Fittings Centre, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to the painting, service and storage of superyacht fittings. Located close to the MB92 facilities, in the Port of Barcelona, the installation covers a total over 1,600m2 and contains 2 paint cabins (270m2 and 290m2) equipped with the latest technology to deliver maximum paint performance, a drying/curing room, a (dis)assembly line, paint mixing, spray gun cleaning and paint storage areas, comprehensive fitting storage options, and versatile office space. Jordi Ariet, MB92 Chief Operating Officer, explains, “This service is something we have long-wanted to offer our clients. We have undertaken extensive research to develop the optimum environment to deliver the highest quality, efficiency, safety, and sustainability. This facility really is a game-changer, providing numerous advantages to clients not just in terms of increased productivity and quality but also in terms of safety and control, with ATEX certification, comprehensive security throughout, and tracking registry of each fitting.”

Mr Ariet adds, “We are already seeing the benefits in just a short period of operation. With fittings now centrally managed at the centre, we can monitor and reduce emissions and VOCs more effectively. Furthermore, we can liberate space in the shipyard traditionally occupied by tents for other services. I am looking forward to seeing how we maximise the potential this facility offers.”
Standards raised
After two challenging years during which the world was in the grip of the pandemic, the Barcelona-based refit yard has continued to provide strong refit, repair, and maintenance services to its superyacht clients, as well as realising a new fittings centre. Other than that, a new 4,300t shiplift is being installed at

The launch of the new shiplift is a major event for the company who, in 25 years, has developed from a small yacht builder into one of the industry’s best known superyacht refit yards. Recently, a major milestone has been reached in the construction of the platform, maintaining the shipyard’s schedule for the opening of the shiplift as planned this autumn for yachts up to 115m in length.
