From the President
Hello MVMA members, we are returning from a fantastic MVMA Convention in Columbia. I had the pleasure of attending the majority of our committee meetings as well as getting to work closely with our amazing MVMA staff. Our convention this year was highlighted by our fantastic lineup of lecturers and our keynote speaker, Hall of Fame coach Gary Pinkel.
Matt Silvius, DVM
One thing I took away from Coach Pinkel’s talk was asking ourselves how we can get better this year. He mentioned the goal for his teams was to try to improve by 3-5% every year. With this in mind, it inspired our team to set some new goals for the year. This year at Eagle Animal Hospital, it will be our goal to have every full-time veterinarian become an MVMA Academy member.
The MVMA Academy is the honor society for veterinarians and serves as the continuing education advisory committee to the MVMA. The
From the Vice President
Stay in the Game!
Academy sets an exemplary standard for CE by requiring applicants to obtain 40 hours of CE a year to join. While membership is free, this honor allows you to set yourself apart from others by showing your commitment to the profession.
I look forward to a great year not only at our hospital in Kansas City but at the MVMA as well. I inspire to be a servant leader and hope to help the membership in any way that I can this year. Have a great year everyone!
Matt Silvius, DVM
David Wilson,
Thanks to all the MVMA members, including the many volunteers and committee members, the MVMA staff, and especially our Executive Director Julie Braun for their work to produce a great annual convention. This year’s meeting was a big and exciting change for me. I spent much more time in committee meetings than in educational seminars. The experience was very enlightening to meet all the great volunteers that work very hard to make the MVMA a strong organization and the MVMA annual convention an excellent meeting for Missouri veterinarians. I was particularly pleased to see new and expanded wet labs and hope we can offer even more labs in future annual meetings.
I continue to be impressed with the many services offered by the MVMA to help practicing veterinarians throughout Missouri as my involvement with the MVMA increases. Their work during the COVID pandemic was very beneficial in providing guidance to help us all navigate this very difficult time to help us provide services to our patients and clients, while keeping our staff as safe as possible. In addition, they are continuously working with our legislative connections to monitor any proposed legislation that might affect the practice of veterinary medicine in Missouri. Please go to https://www.movma.org/ and click on “Join MVMA” and “Benefits of Membership” to see all the services provided by our great organization. Spring is usually an extremely busy time for veterinarians, and I hope 2023 is a bit less chaotic than the
last few years have been. I look forward to my participation on the Executive Board as your new Vice President. Please contact me, the MVMA office, or any members of the Executive Board if you have any questions or concerns about the MVMA. I look forward to working with all of you. It is truly an honor to serve you and I welcome the challenge.
Sincerely,
David A. Wilson, DVM, MS, DACVS

2023 MVMA OFFICERS
A Thank You from Dr. Ryan
Newly installed MVMA officers:
Dr. Matt Silvius, president, Riverside, Mo.; Dr. Kacie Ulhorn, president-elect, Hermann, Mo.; Dr. David Wilson, vice-president, Columbia, Mo.; Dr. Shelia Taylor, secretary-treasurer, Springfield, Mo.; and Dr. Edward Migneco, St. Louis Mo., board chair.
Dr. David Wilson Installed as 2023 MVMA Vice President
Dr. David Wilson grew up on a mixed livestock and grain farm in LeRoy, Illinois. He graduated from Illinois State University with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. He managed a quarter horse farm in Bloomington, IL during college, which eventually altered his career path from accounting to veterinary medicine. He graduated in 1984 from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Wilson joined the Illinois Equine Center in Farmer City, Illinois and returned to the University of Illinois to complete an equine surgery residency and master’s degree. He subsequently joined the University of Missouri, College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery as a clinical instructor in equine surgery. In due course he became a full professor, section head of equine medicine and surgery, chair of the hospital advisory board, and hospital director of the MU Veterinary Health Center.
Dr. Wilson retired from the University of Missouri in 2021 as an Emeritus Professor and continues to be involved as an Adjunct Professor with the MU Veterinary Health Center. He lives on a small farm near Columbia, MO with his spouse Chris, their 2 dogs, and 3 horses. He has three daughters that live in the Columbia area.
Dr. Wilson is a member of the West Central VMA and the Missouri VMA. He has been a member of multiple MVMA committees including the equine committee (Chair 2004-7), and legislative, scope of practice, and membership committes. He worked with the MVMA to initiate the annual summer Equine Program at MU.
Dear MVMA members and staff, I am humbled and honored to be the recipient of the prestigious Veterinarian of the Year Award. Previous winners have blazed the trail of excellence for our veterinary community. I will continue the tradition of honoring our profession with pride and unending service for a brighter future.
I personally would not be where I am today without the dear mentorship of some influential veterinarians. A special thank you to Dr. Garrett, Dr. Ragan, and the late Dr. Rasmussen. I started mixed animal practice with the Troy & Wentzville Veterinary Clinics in 1992 and I am still with the practices. They taught me a wealth of information that I value as well as their friendship. I have been blessed to have such great mentors. While in vet school in 1990, I had a calling from Dean Kahrs to help materialize a little project known as the Gentle Doctor Benefit. I led fellow students to participate in the heartwarming event that raised money for a little project called Clydesdale Hall. I was able to participate in a free block with Dr. Bud Hertzog where we delved into large animal medicine as well as work with the American Royal livestock and worked behind-the-scenes medicine at the K.C. Zoo. He has been instrumental in teaching me the vital significance of organized veterinary medicine. I have spent countless volunteer hours serving organizations on the local, state, and national levels. I have screened CE for RACE for years with AAVSB. I was President of the Missouri Veterinary Academy and I was the Chairman of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Board. I held numerous MVMA offices as well as MVMA President and Board Chair. I have been a delegate to the AVMA representing the great state of Missouri.
I participate with the MVMA Legislative Committee. I travel to Jefferson City and advocate for our profession as well in Washington D.C. on Capitol Hill. Visiting with Senators and Representatives has enlightened their understanding of the issues our industry faces. We need continued support from veterinarians like you. The experience from all these roles has been wonderful. However, the valued friendship with others serving our profession has been priceless.
My husband Bruce Rhodes and I own the Elsberry Animal Hospital. We have been blessed with four amazing children and a crazy life. I thank them for allowing me to give my time and talents to this amazing profession.
Sincerely,
Carol Ryan, DVM

A Message to Our MSFQAP Veterinarians
Dear MSFQAP Certified Veterinarians,
Thank you for your participation in the Missouri Stocker/Feeder Quality Assurance Program. We wish to make you aware a couple changes to the MSFQA Program which were agreed upon by the committee at their January 26, 2023 meeting.
1. Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) certification required for MSFQAP veterinarians.
VETERINARIAN BQA REQUIREMENT
Effective: February 1, 2024
We are asking all MSFQAP veterinarians to obtain current BQA certification by February 1, 2024. BQA certification is valid for 3 years and is increasingly being sought by cattle buyers. The committee believes adding the BQA requirement to the MSFQA Program will increase demand for MSFQAP calves, and keep the program at the forefront of the cattle industry. The MVMA office will need your BQA number on file to order tags after February 1, 2024.
If you have completed BQA training in the past 3 years:
Please contact the MVMA office and provide them with your certification number. If you do not have your certification number it may be obtained by contacting Sydney at the Missouri Beef Industry Council at sydney@mobeef.com.
If you need to complete BQA training:
Training can be completed online at: https:// www.bqa.org/. The “Cow/Calf” version of BQA is most relevant the MSFQAP program, but any version will be accepted. Alternatively, BQA training will be offered in person on Thursday January 25 during the 2024 MVMA Convention.
Once you complete BQA training don’t forget to provide your certification number to the MVMA office.
Ultimately the committee intends to require BQA certification of producers participating in the MSFQAP program at some point in (continued on page 12.

Impact of the Cannabis (Marijuana) Legal Landscape on Missouri Veterinarians
The legalization of recreational marijuana for humans in Missouri took effect December 8, 2022 and does not change the law as it applies to veterinarians and their patients. State laws legalizing marijuana use for people do not apply to cannabis use for animals.
The FDA has not approved cannabis for any use in animals. With the limited exception of the Epidiolex product, there are no cannabis-based products approved for use in animals, and use or prescription by veterinarians for animal patients is prohibited.
Below are the sections you will find in the Cannabis Research Memo from MVMA’s legal counsel dated January 5, 2023. The Cannabis Research Memo can be found at www.movma.org main page under the “Latest News” section.
• How is cannabis (marijuana) designated under federal and state law?
• What are important things for veterinarians to consider?
• What sections of the Veterinary Practice Act are relevant in determining what veterinarians can say to clients about cannabis?
• Can veterinarians give advice to clients about cannabis use for their animals?
• Are there current national developments to address the risk for veterinarians?
• What should veterinarians know about safety and efficacy of cannabis use for animals?
• What is Cannabis Toxicity?
• May banks service the cannabis industry?
• How does insurance come into play?
• What is the current legal landscape across the United States regarding cannabis?
Note: On January 26, 2023, FDA announced the existing regulatory framework for foods and supplements are not appropriate for CBD and will work with congress on a new way forward. MVMA will continue to monitor these efforts and make you aware of any changes.

3. Change in Form Submission Requirements
LOT numbers for products used are no longer required on submission forms. The online form has been updated and the carbon copy paper forms will be updated. We will continue to use the forms we have until they run out.
As you know, the goal of the MSFQA Program is to help producers realize the value of the investment they make in raising quality feeder cattle. We hope these changes will keep the MSFQA Program at the forefront of the industry into the future. Thank you for your dedication to this program and making it successful for the veterinarians, producers, and consumers.

your trusted pair for protection
HEARTGARD® Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel) and NexGard® (afoxolaner) are designed with compliance in mind to keep your patients protected every month, year-round.
HEARTGARD® Plus and NexGard® are both formulated with the #1 tastes dogs prefer. 1,2
Dog owners pairing HEARTGARD Plus with NexGard were the most likely to purchase 12 months of protection versus other common brand pairings in a 2020 assessment of parasiticide purchases in veterinary clinics.*3
Over 2 billion doses of HEARTGARD Plus, and over 270 million doses of NexGard have been prescribed.4,5
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: HEARTGARD Plus is well tolerated. All dogs should be tested for heartworm infection before starting a preventive program. Following the use of HEARTGARD Plus, digestive and neurological side effects have rarely been reported. For more information, please see full prescribing information or visit www.HEARTGARDClinic.com.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: NexGard is for use in dogs only. The most frequently reported adverse reactions include vomiting, pruritus, lethargy, diarrhea, and lack of appetite. The safe use of NexGard in pregnant, breeding, or lactating dogs has not been evaluated. Use with caution in dogs with a history of seizures or neurologic disorders. For more information, please see full prescribing information or visit www.NexGardClinic.com.
*Assessment was conducted by IDEXX® and leveraged veterinary clinic PIMS transaction level data for 2020. This analysis included veterinary practices with consistent data from 2018 to 2020. To be included, patients needed to have at least one parasiticide transaction in 2019 and 2020. The analysis was limited to loyal patients, where loyalty was defined as having one flea/tick control brand during the full three-year period.

12 MONTHS
CHEWABLES
CAUTION: Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.
INDICATIONS: For use in dogs to prevent canine heartworm disease by eliminating the tissue stage of heartworm larvae (Dirofilaria immitis) for a month (30 days) after infection and for the treatment and control of roundworms (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina) and hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala, Ancylostoma braziliense).
DOSAGE: HEARTGARD® Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel) should be administered orally at monthly intervals at the recommended minimum dose level of 6 mcg of ivermectin per kilogram (2.72 mcg/lb) and 5 mg of pyrantel (as pamoate salt) per kg (2.27 mg/lb) of body weight. The recommended dosing schedule for prevention of canine heartworm disease and for the treatment and control of roundworms and hookworms is as follows:
Brief Summary: Before using NexGard® (afoxolaner) Chewables, please consult the product insert, a summary of which follows.
CAUTION: Federal (USA) law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. Description: NexGard is a soft chewable for oral administration to dogs and puppies according to their weight. Each chewable is formulated to provide a minimum afoxolaner dosage of 1.14 mg/lb (2.5 mg/kg).
Indications: NexGard kills adult fleas and is indicated for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations (Ctenocephalides felis), and the treatment and control of Ixodes scapularis, Dermacentor variabilis, Amblyomma americanum, and Rhipicephalus sanguineus infestations in dogs and puppies 8 weeks of age and older, weighing 4 pounds of body weight or greater, for one month. NexGard is indicated for the prevention of Borrelia burgdorferi infections as a direct result of killing Ixodes scapularis vector ticks.
Dosage and Administration: NexGard is given orally once a month, at the minimum dosage of 1.14 mg/lb (2.5 mg/kg). See full product insert for dosing table and details.
Warnings: Not for use in humans. Keep this and all drugs out of the reach of children. In case of accidental ingestion, contact a physician immediately. Keep NexGard in a secure location out of reach of dogs, cats, and other animals to prevent accidental ingestion or overdose.
HEARTGARD® Plus is recommended for dogs 6 weeks of age and older. For dogs over 100 lbs use the appropriate combination of these chewables.
ADMINISTRATION: Remove only one chewable at a time from the foil-backed blister card. Return the card with the remaining chewables to its box to protect the product from light. Because most dogs find HEARTGARD® Plus palatable, the product can be offered to the dog by hand. Alternatively, it may be added intact to a small amount of dog food. The chewable should be administered in a manner that encourages the dog to chew, rather than to swallow without chewing. Chewables may be broken into pieces and fed to dogs that normally swallow treats whole.
Care should be taken that the dog consumes the complete dose, and treated animals should be observed for a few minutes after administration to ensure that part of the dose is not lost or rejected. If it is suspected that any of the dose has been lost, redosing is recommended.
HEARTGARD® Plus should be given at monthly intervals during the period of the year when mosquitoes (vectors), potentially carrying infective heartworm larvae, are active. The initial dose must be given within a month (30 days) after the dog’s first exposure to mosquitoes. The final dose must be given within a month (30 days) after the dog’s last exposure to mosquitoes.
When replacing another heartworm preventive product in a heartworm disease preventive program, the first dose of HEARTGARD® Plus must be given within a month (30 days) of the last dose of the former medication.
If the interval between doses exceeds a month (30 days), the efficacy of ivermectin can be reduced. Therefore, for optimal performance, the chewable must be given once a month on or about the same day of the month. If treatment is delayed, whether by a few days or many, immediate treatment with HEARTGARD® Plus and resumption of the recommended dosing regimen minimizes the opportunity for the development of adult heartworms.
Monthly treatment with HEARTGARD® Plus also provides effective treatment and control of roundworms (T. canis, T. leonina) and hookworms (A. caninum, U. stenocephala, A. braziliense). Clients should be advised of measures to be taken to prevent reinfection with intestinal parasites.
EFFICACY: HEARTGARD® Plus Chewables, given orally using the recommended dose and regimen, are effective against the tissue larval stage of D. immitis for a month (30 days) after infection and, as a result, prevent the development of the adult stage. HEARTGARD® Plus Chewables are also effective against canine roundworms (T. canis, T. leonina) and hookworms (A. caninum, U. stenocephala, A. braziliense).
ACCEPTABILITY: In acceptability and field trials, HEARTGARD® Plus was shown to be an acceptable oral dosage form that was consumed at first offering by the majority of dogs.
PRECAUTIONS: All dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infection before starting treatment with HEARTGARD® Plus which is not effective against adult D. immitis. Infected dogs must be treated to remove adult heartworms and microfilariae before initiating a program with HEARTGARD® Plus. While some microfilariae may be killed by the ivermectin in HEARTGARD® Plus at the recommended dose level, HEARTGARD® Plus is not effective for microfilariae clearance. A mild hypersensitivity-type reaction, presumably due to dead or dying microfilariae and particularly involving a transient diarrhea, has been observed in clinical trials with ivermectin alone after treatment of some dogs that have circulating microfilariae.
Keep this and all drugs out of the reach of children.
In case of ingestion by humans, clients should be advised to contact a physician immediately. Physicians may contact a Poison Control Center for advice concerning cases of ingestion by humans.
Store between 68°F - 77°F (20° - 25°C). Excursions between 59°F - 86°F (15° - 30°C) are permitted. Protect product from light.
ADVERSE REACTIONS: In clinical field trials with HEARTGARD® Plus, vomiting or diarrhea within 24 hours of dosing was rarely observed (1.1% of administered doses). The following adverse reactions have been reported following the use of HEARTGARD®: depression/lethargy, vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, mydriasis, ataxia, staggering, convulsions and hypersalivation.
To report suspected adverse drug events, for technical assistance, or to obtain a copy of the Safety Data Sheet (SDS), contact Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health USA Inc. at 1-888-637-4251. For additional information about adverse drug experience reporting for animal drugs, contact FDA at 1-888-FDA-VETS, or www.fda.gov/reportanimalae.
SAFETY: HEARTGARD® Plus has been shown to be bioequivalent to HEARTGARD®, with respect to the bioavailability of ivermectin. The dose regimens of HEARTGARD® Plus and HEARTGARD® are the same with regard to ivermectin (6 mcg/ kg). Studies with ivermectin indicate that certain dogs of the Collie breed are more sensitive to the effects of ivermectin administered at elevated dose levels (more than 16 times the target use level) than dogs of other breeds. At elevated doses, sensitive dogs showed adverse reactions which included mydriasis, depression, ataxia, tremors, drooling, paresis, recumbency, excitability, stupor, coma and death. HEARTGARD® demonstrated no signs of toxicity at 10 times the recommended dose (60 mcg/kg) in sensitive Collies. Results of these trials and bioequivalency studies, support the safety of HEARTGARD® products in dogs, including Collies, when used as recommended.
HEARTGARD® Plus has shown a wide margin of safety at the recommended dose level in dogs, including pregnant or breeding bitches, stud dogs and puppies aged 6 or more weeks. In clinical trials, many commonly used flea collars, dips, shampoos, anthelmintics, antibiotics, vaccines and steroid preparations have been administered with HEARTGARD® Plus in a heartworm disease preventive program.
In one trial, where some pups had parvovirus, there was a marginal reduction in efficacy against intestinal nematodes, possibly due to a change in intestinal transit time.
HOW SUPPLIED: HEARTGARD® Plus is available in three dosage strengths (See DOSAGE section) for dogs of different weights. Each strength comes in convenient cartons of 1, 6 and 12 chewables.

Precautions: Afoxolaner is a member of the isoxazoline class. This class has been associated with neurologic adverse reactions including tremors, ataxia, and seizures. Seizures have been reported in dogs receiving isoxazoline class drugs, even in dogs without a history of seizures. Use with caution in dogs with a history of seizures or neurologic disorders.
The safe use of NexGard in breeding, pregnant or lactating dogs has not been evaluated.
Adverse Reactions: In a well-controlled US field study, which included a total of 333 households and 615 treated dogs (415 administered afoxolaner; 200 administered active control), no serious adverse reactions were observed with NexGard.
Over the 90-day study period, all observations of potential adverse reactions were recorded. The most frequent reactions reported at an incidence of >1% within any of the three months of observations are presented in the following table.
Table 1: Dogs with Adverse Reactions.
1 Number of dogs in the afoxolaner treatment group with the identified abnormality.
2 Number of dogs in the control group with the identified abnormality.
In the US field study, one dog with a history of seizures experienced a seizure on the same day after receiving the first dose and on the same day after receiving the second dose of NexGard. This dog experienced a third seizure one week after receiving the third dose. The dog remained enrolled and completed the study. Another dog with a history of seizures had a seizure 19 days after the third dose of NexGard. The dog remained enrolled and completed the study. A third dog with a history of seizures received NexGard and experienced no seizures throughout the study.
Post-Approval Experience (July 2018): The following adverse events are based on postapproval adverse drug experience reporting. Not all adverse events are reported to FDA/CVM. It is not always possible to reliably estimate the adverse event frequency or establish a causal relationship to product exposure using these data.
The following adverse events reported for dogs are listed in decreasing order of reporting frequency for NexGard: Vomiting, pruritus, lethargy, diarrhea (with and without blood), anorexia, seizure, hyperactivity/restlessness, panting, erythema, ataxia, dermatitis (including rash, papules), allergic reactions (including hives, swelling), and tremors.
Effectiveness: See full product insert for details regarding Effectiveness.
Animal Safety: In a margin of safety study, NexGard was administered orally to 8 to 9-week-old Beagle puppies at 1, 3, and 5 times the maximum exposure dose for a total of six treatments. There were no clinically-relevant effects related to treatment on physical examination, body weight, food consumption, clinical pathology (hematology, clinical chemistries, or coagulation tests), gross pathology, histopathology or organ weights. Vomiting occurred throughout the study, with a similar incidence in the treated and control groups, including one dog in the 5x group that vomited four hours after treatment.
In a well-controlled field study, no adverse reactions were observed from the concomitant use of NexGard with other medications.
Contact Information: For a copy of the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) or to report suspected adverse drug events, contact Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health USA Inc. at 1-888-637-4251. Epicure Pharma is offering a free webinar. The FDA recently finalized regulatory guidance for compounded animal medications from bulk drug substances for use in non-food-producing animals impacting the way compounded drugs can be used, documented, ordered, and prescribed. This guidance document outlines when it is appropriate to prepare compounded medications utilizing bulk chemicals and the additional documentation that is required. While the beginning of enforcement was scheduled for October of 2022, it has been delayed until 2023 to provide additional time for compliance and education. Learn how to minimize risk in your practice! Check out Epicur Pharma’s GFI resources page to watch our on-demand webinar and read our blog breaking down GFI 256: the 4 points your veterinary practice needs to understand.

Equine Committee
The Equine Committee met at the MVMA Convention on January 26, 2023. Discussion was held on whether or not to continue the MVMA Summer Equine Seminar since the Allen family has decided to discontinue the memorial lecture we usually hold on Saturday and attendance has been lower. We decided to send a survey out to Missouri equine veterinarians to gauge interest in continuing to have this CE event before we make a decision as to whether we continue this program.
After a another successful MVMA Fall Equine Dentistry Seminar and Wet Lab in September 2022, we have decided to hold another seminar on September 29 – October 1, 2023. We had a full course in 2022 with 10 veterinarian participants and 3 veterinarians volunteering their time as wet lab assistants. Feedback from participants was that they were pleased with the education and practical experience they received. The format will be the same as the previous seminars and will be again held at the Longmeadow Rescue Ranch near Union, Missouri. The registration fee was raised to $675 to reflect increases in expenses.
The committee discussed a lack of coverage of equine emergencies in some regions of the state that is overwhelming the practices that are seeing emergencies. The MVMA Equine Committee will continue to monitor legislation and issues that will affect the practice of equine veterinary medicine.
Bruce Whittle, DVM, Chair
Emergency Management & Public Health Committee
The Emergency Management & Public Health Committee met on January 26, 2023 from 9-10 am. Items discussed during the meeting were the following:
• The Large Animal Technical Emergency Rescue Awareness & Operations class that took place on August 27 & 28 was summarized. The course was jointly taught by Boone County Fire Protection District first-responders, veterinarians from the College of Veterinary Medicine, and veterinarians from the Corps. The course emphasized the importance of working as a team during rescue situations, and there was a large emphasis placed on how to safely work around injured and/or entrapped large animals. Live exercises with horses, cattle and pigs were conducted. Difficult rescue scenarios (entrapments in overturned
trailer, cattle guard and trench) were practiced using manikins. Twelve firefighters, 10 veterinary students and 5 veterinarians from the Corps completed the course.
• The Medical Reserve Corps is planning a state-wide conference for disaster volunteers on April 4-5 at the Stoney Creek Convention Center in Columbia, MO. Corps members are encouraged to attend.
• The AVMA Veterinary First Responder Certificate Program was discussed. The goal of this program is to provide a recognized training program so DVMs who wish to respond to disasters will be appropriately trained and credentialled. The training is 100% on-line, and it consists of courses offered on the AVMA’s Axon website and FEMA’s Independent Study website. All courses are free.
Dr. Vogelweid presented an update from the Mo. Department of Health and Senior Services which contained the annual number of cases of Rabies and tickborne diseases that occurred in 2022.

The AVMA House of Delegates met on January 5-7 in Chicago Illinois. Your MVMA, delegates to the AVMA met along with the representatives of 52 Jurisdictions and 18 Allied Groups for an in-person meeting in Chicago over 2 days to conduct the governance business of the AVMA. The meeting was presided over by AVMA President-Elect Rena
Carlson and Executive Vice President
Janet
Donlin
Your association is now over 100,000 members strong and works to represent, guide, and enhance our ability to thrive in our profession every day.
ECO n OMIC UPDATE
During the economic update, information was provided regarding the suspected upcoming recession. The recession is predicted to be uneven, and without a general downturn. All types of pet ownership is being affected by the impending recession. The number of household pets increased during covid spring 2020 and 2021, but by spring 2022 there was a decrease in number of households owning pets and that number is trending down.
Inflation has taken a toll on everyone. Historical salary trends have been positive, especially in the last 5 years, but the reality is that even with all the growth experienced, inflation continues to take a bite out of the earnings and has decreased disposable income. Inflation will drop during the recession, but not significantly.
WORkFORCE UPDATE
Retention and attrition continue to be a priority for the veterinary profession. We have seen a slight decline in the number of veterinarians considering leaving the profession, but we still have a problem with retention in practice as well as within the sector and attrition to the profession itself. AVMA has created many workforce initiatives to help target where our challenges are and how we can tackle them. Some of these initiatives include:.
• Economic State of the Profession report-
•The Practice Pulse, a monthly digest of key practice data, trends, and expert insight
• Language of Veterinary Care Initiative,
• Organizational Interventions to Burnout Study
More information is avaiable can be found at AVMA.org
DEI JOURnEY FOR TEAMS
Provides a learning pathway for vet professional to deepen knowledge of diversity and improve DEI in work spaces. The platform is designed for busy professionals to enhance and nurture their work experience and build meaningful relationships with clients and community. The goal is to expose, encourage, engage, inspire, and motivate your team. There is a 15 minute welcome webinar, and once completed you can advance to educational models. A cornerstone guide is the navigator handbook which helps to lead staff meeting and facilitate discussions. Journey for Teams launched on July 29th, 2022 has progressed to it’s second module. All resources can be found at https://www.journeyforteams.org/.
MARkETI n G UPDATE
The AVMA marketing team is committed to supporting the veterinary community. They have created a reputation management toolkit with an educational grant from Banfield. The toolkit is online and provides new tools to address situations. A new benefit is that this is now available to all vet team members not just AVMA members. AVMA has created a list of shared responsibilities on a poster that you can share in your workplace to help manage expectations. It poses question such as: As a client what can you expect? As a client you are responsible for. Find more information at avma.org/reputationmanagement.
TREASURER’S REPORT
The AVMA is financially secure with a 1.57mm projected operational net income and a 9.8mm projected investment revenue. The year 2022 brough about a persistent pandemic, a bear market, and continued threat of recession leading to a decreased bottom line. AVMA reserves maintain 100% of operations, and it’s because of this fiscal responsibility that has allowed AVMA to continue to fully serve members and pursue initiatives amid the wild market.
AVMA GOVERn MEnT REl ATIO nS D IVISIO n
The AVMA remains non-partisan and works with those in congress that want to work with AVMA on veterinary issues. The AVMA’s annual legislative fly-in to be held in April 2023. The upcoming reauthorization of the Farm Bill will be one of the top priorities for the AVMA as it will consist of funding for many programs vital to veterinarians and animal health. Additional issues atop the AVMA’s legislative agenda include increasing access to veterinary services in rural areas, entrenching the concept of One Health among federal agencies, ensuring the health of over a million dogs imported into the United States every year, and many others.
AVMA PAC

Animal Archives: Honoring Your Clients and Their Pets
Anyone who has lost a beloved family pet may find a memorial gift to be a comforting gesture.
Veterinarians can express their sympathy, say thank you, and build lasting client relationships through the simple but meaningful gesture of placing the departed pet in the Animal Archives. The owners, their family, and friends can see the memorial from anywhere in the country on the Foundation’s Animal Archives website www.mopetmemorial.com The archives are also displayed at the Veterinary Museum in Jefferson City.To date, over 21,000 pets are registered in the archives.
Many of our members participate in this program. A $10 donation on your part comforts clients, helps build your client/doctor relationship, and strengthens the human-animal bond. The Foundation will send, on your behalf, a personalized condolence card with the pet’s name. They also receive a link to their pet’s memorial to upload photos, remarks, etc. Your clinic will also be listed on the Animal Archives Pet Memorial website at www. mopetmemorial.org.

MVMa’s Quality assurance Program
What is the Missouri stocker/Feeder Quality assurance Program?
The Missouri Stocker Feeder Quality Assurance Program is designed to meet the quality improvement and pre-conditioning needs of producers, feeders, and consumers. This program educates participants in immunology, animal well-being and the economics of disease. Participation in the program increases producer accountability for quality and safety of the product they sell.
How does the Program Work?
Veterinarians and producers must be certified. Veterinarians are certified by MVMA MSFQAP Committee members. Producers are certified by their veterinarian. Veterinarians and producers learn how they can influence carcass quality and consumer confidence by monitoring where and when injections are administered.
Once certified, the producer may participate in the program at one of three levels (white, red or blue tag). The three-level approach allows all producers the opportunity to match their level of management and facilities to the level of participation.
level 1: show-Me select (White tag)
• Participating veterinarians and producers must be certified.
• Calves must be properly identified with an approved ear tag. Tag numbers will be listed on an approved certificate.
• External and internal parasite control is administered.
• Calves will be dehorned and healed. Calves will also be castrated with a knife and healed or verified to be steers.
• Vaccinations: 7-way clostridial, IBR, BVD, PI3,
BRSV, Mannheimia haemolytica with leukotoxoid, (Histophilus is optional.)
• Cattle must be born on the producer’s farm. A range of birthdates or the birthdate of the oldest calf in the group must be recorded.
• Bull in and out dates will be provided.
• Individual calf treatments will be recorded to include date, product, dosage, route of administration and injection site.
• Vaccinations must be given no younger than four months of age and at least 21 days before sale.
level 2: show-Me superior (red tag)
• Weaned 45 days before offering for sale.
• Meet Level 1 requirements - NOTE: Initial vaccinations may be given at an age determined by an attending veterinarian.
• In addition, a second round of vaccinations must be given using the following guidelines:
• A 7-way clostridial as well as a modified live vaccine containing IBR, PI3, BVD and BRSV must be administered;
• Histophilus somni is optional;
• Only one dose of Manheimia heamolytica is required if that dose is administered to calves 5 months of age or older;
• The time frame between initial and second vaccinations must be a minimum of 21 days and all vaccinations must be completed at least seven days prior to sale;
• If a veterinarian determines initial vaccinations should be given to calves less than 4 months of age then second vaccinations must not occur until calves are 5 months of age or older.
level 3: show-Me supreme (Blue tag)
• Meet Level 1 and Level 2 requirements.
• All cattle must be tested and be negative for persistent BVD infection.
• Genetic information is optional.
For more information, visit the MVMA website at www.movma.org. An online MSFQAP Producer Manual, online veterinarian certification, online tag submission Part-1 and 2 Forms, and other materials are available.
