Relief for Okapale Fisherman

Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister, Derek Klazen curated the agreement signing for redressing employment oftheOkapaleWorkersandithasbeenrevealedthatinthe Hake fisheries 180 workers have secured fulltime and permanent jobs at Tunacor, 119 at Seawork, 92 at Merlus and290atHangana.

Klazen relayed the scenario that led to the unemployment of these fisherman,wholosttheirjobsduetoavarietyofreasonsin2015which consequentlyledtothemcampingneartheKuisebmundstadiumwhich has coined them the name Okapale workers. “Actually, there wasn't a varietyofreasons,itwasbecauseofindustrialactionsthattheseworkers took, which was later determined to be illegal.” Klazen went on to remark how much of a serious concern it was for the Namibian government that for so many years these fishermen have been unemployed.“Someofthemhavelosttheirlivelihoods,somehavelost their lives.” He stated referring to the recent suicide of one of these workersinMarch.

The agreement provides for the full time employment -permanent employment of the fisherman against a fishing quota in the hake and horse-mackerel fisheries which is renewable annually The same employmentagreementsareduetobeenteredintowithoperatorswithin theHorseMackerelFisheries;approximately1700permanentandfulltime jobs will be secured under the Government Employment Redress Programme.

Fromawaitinglistforhousingof22000outofanestimated 40 to 50 000 people living in the Democratic Resettlement Community (DRC) in Swakopmund, 805registered DRC beneficiaries will receive Contracts for Ownership CertificatesatacontractsigningceremonythiscomingSunday,16 April.

Thewaitinglistdatestobetweentheyears2000to2010.PublicRelations Officer of the Municipality of Swakopmund, Linda Mupupa said the result of the significant accomplishment of obtaining legitimacy and approval from residents to eventually give ownership, is 805 registered beneficiarieswhowillreceiveownershipcertificatesforervenenabling themtogainaccesstomunicipalservicesandawardingthemtheability toconstructpermanentstructures.“Thiswasachievedthroughnumerous publicmeetingsandengagements,”Mupupasaid.

Karibib Town council tries to rectify water problems

The Karibib Town Council met with Navachab QKR Mine and NAMWATER to discuss the issues pertaining to the water quality which the town has been experiencing for the pastmonth,onWednesday,5April.

Residentsofthetownhavebeencomplainingaboutbrownishtapwaterwitha verybadodour SomeoftheresidentsintheUsabLocationsaidtheyhavenot observed a change in colour or odour from their tap water and considered themselveslucky,“IhaveonlyheardfrommyfriendswhostayatHarambee locationthattheirwaterisdirtybutluckilyforme,Ihavenotnoticedanything hereatthehousewhereIlive,itmustbesomepipes,”saidoneresident. AnothermansaidhelivesinHarambeeandtheirtapwaterhasbeenrottenfor the past few weeks already “We have been dealing with diarrhoea since the problemstartedandwecannotdrinkthewaterunlessweboilit.”

It is with this that the Chief Executive Officer of the KaribibTown Council, Lesley Goreseb issued a press statement this week Tuesday to inform the residentofthetownthatthesituationisbeinginvestigatedbythetowncouncil and NAMWATER with the assistance from the town's largest mine, the NavachabQKRMine.

In the statement, Goreseb said, “It is regrettably public knowledge that the qualityofthewaterinKaribibhasnotbeenatitsbestinthepastmonthorso. Residentscomplainedofhightepidity(brownishcolor)ofthewater,strange smell,andalienobjectslikewormsinthewater.”

Goreseb further said that the source affecting the town's water quality is currentlyunknownbecauseofavarietyoffactors,includingthequalityofraw waterfromtheSwakoppoortDam,agingpipes,andpipeburstsintown. AccordingtoGoreseb,duetothetechnicalnatureoftheinvestigation,itmay take two to three weeks to complete. “The exercise has been undertaken to identifyproblemareasandfindthesourceandoriginofthepoorquality The Karibib Town Council will send an investigation team to identify houses to takesamples,pleaseallowthemtocarryoutthisimportantexercise.”

MupupasharestheHistoryoftheDRC: “HowtheDRCcametobethecoastaltownofSwakopmund is home to several informal settlements. OnesuchsettlementistheDRCsettlement,which is home to a greater part of Swakopmund's population. Located on the outskirts of Swakopmund, the settlement has been subject to challenges such as limited access to basic services, lack of proper housing and limited economic opportunities Despite these challenges, the settlement has a vibrant community and unique culture that deserves recognition. In this article, we explore the DRC settlementin Swakopmund, its history, challenges and the efforts being made to improve the lives of its residents. DRC was once an undeveloped land on the outskirts of Mondesa. However, due to an increase in demand for land and housing in Swakopmund, DRC cameto be in 1999.The FormalisationoftheDRCandtheproclamationthere-ofas aninformalsettlementbytheTownshipBoardtook place from 2009 to 2012. Servicing of the DRC Properstartedin2013undertheMassHousingumbrella with funds availed by central government.

The installation of bulk services in DRC Proper wascompletedin2019atatotalamountofN$230 million, including the installation of underground infrastructuresuchasthesewer,waterconnections, gravelroadsandtheinstallationofstreetlights.The DRC Proper was designed to accommodate any person who wishes to reside in the settlement.

Applications were received on a daily basis since 2000 until 2010 from the residents of Swakopmund, especially Mondesa backyard squatters. Permissionwasgrantedtoallocatedresidentstoput up their houses with temporary material. The demolitionofSingleQuartersandconstructionofformal houses started in 1997, the overspill of residents while Single Quarters were relocated to the DRC Informal Settlement, including the residents who resided along the Swakop river Some residents settled themselves at the sides of DRC. The rural to urban migration of citizens in search of greener pastures also put more pressure on scarce resources, resulting in congestion in the DRC. In 2019,theresidentswererelocatedfromExtension 31 and Extension 25 to Extension 40, 41 and 42, whichisnowcalledWagdaar TheaimwastoserviceExtension31toaccommodatesomeresidents fromDRCProperwhoseervennolongerexistdue tothenewpermanentdesign.”

Fisheries need N$290 million for new financial year

Minister of fisheries and Marine Resources, Derek Klazen said during the motivation of the ministry budget, his ministry seeks approval for the amount totaling N$ 290 510 000 to execute their duties as the custodian of the country's marineresourcesforthe2023/2024financialyear.

MinisterDerekKlazensaidN$270millionisearmarked for the operational budget while the remaining N$20 million will go toward developmental projects oftheministry

Klazen explained that the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources comprises of the Department of Technical Operations, Planning, Aquaculture, Administration and Resources Management and have six programmestoaddresssomeofthecountry'sdevelopmentalgoalsrelatedtomarineandaquaticresources. These programmes are survey and stock assessment, humanresourcesdevelopment,marineandinlandmonitoring,controlandsurveillance,promotionofaquaculture and inland fisheries, policy and economic adviceaswellascoordinationandsupportservices.

AccordingtoKlazentheSurveyandStockAssessment programme is essential for the sustainable management of Namibia's living marine resources since it is under this programme that surveys are conducted to provide data on marine fish stocks and guide in the setting of the TotalAllowable Catch (TAC) which in turn ensures long term sustainable harvesting of marineresources.

Klazensaid,“giventheimportanceofthisprogramme and the need to fulfil the above-mentioned responsibilitiesanallocationN$51981000forthe2023/2024 financialyearisrequestedforthesustainablemanagementofNamibia'slivingmarineresources.”

AccordingtoKlazentheministryneedsanamountof N$67 767 000 for the human resources development programme.“Thisistoprovideadministrativesupport services such as finance, human resources and procurementtosupporttheexecutionoftheassignedfunctionsandprogrammes.

In order to ensure the protection of our living aquatic resources the Ministry is mandatedto Marine and Inland Monitoring, Control and Surveillance functions.

The ministry needs N$85 million to carry out monitoring,controlandsurveillancefunctions.

“This programme focuses on curbing and deterring illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities within Namibia's exclusive economic zone (EEZ)aswellasontheinlandwaterbodies.Ourlaw enforcement officers; fisheries inspectors, carry out activitiessuchas;air,seaandriverpatrols,tomonitor whether fishing activities are carried out within the ambitofourlaws,”Klazenexplained.

According to the minister of fisheries an amount of N$44 196 000 is requested to carry out the activities underPromotionofAquacultureandInlandFisheries programme.“ThisamountincludesanamountofN$3 500000fortwocapitalprojects.Theactivitiesofthis programme includes but not limited to zonation of land, sea based aqua parks, water quality monitoring Phyto-sanitarytesting,researchtraining,advisoryand extension services, hatchery establishment and fingerling production and distribution to subsistence farmers.The purpose of this programme is to ensure the responsible and sustainable development of the aquaculture sector to achieve social economic benefitsforthepeoplelivingalongsidetheperennial riversandseasonalrainedpans,”Klazensaid.

AccordingtoKlazentheFishingIndustryisoneofthe biggest contributors toward the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) across our country “To carry outactivitiesunderthisprogrammeduringthe2023/ 2024 financial year, an amount of N$13 851 600) is requested.”

KlazenexplainedthatanamountofN$26795000is requested for Coordination and Support Services. “Thisprogrammeistoprovideadministrativesupport totheMinistry,particularlyinfinancialmanagement, optimal deployment of resources (human, financial, information technology and maintenance and logisticalmanagement)andICTsupportservices.

The 15-deck transatlantic ocean liner which is 343 meters in length and boasts the first planetarium at sea is on a 120-day-tour which commenced in Southampton on 11 January and will visit 18 countries, 31 ports, and 18 UNESCO sites on the journey

The new ship was named Queen Mary II by Queen ElizabethIIin2004afterthefirstQueenMarycompleted her voyage in 1936.The Queen Mary II was designedbyateamofBritishnavalarchitects,ledby StephenPayne.

Atthetimeofherconstructionin2003byChan-tiers de l'Atlantique, the Queen Mary II was the longest, widest,andtallestpassengershipeverbuilt,andwith hergrosstonnageof148528,alsothelargest.

She no longer holds this distinction after the constructionofRoyalCaribbeanInternational's154407 GTFreedomoftheSeasinApril2006.

“SADC hosted Regional Workshop at the coast”

NamibiaastheChairoftheSouthernAfricanDevelopmentCommunity (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defence and Security hosted the Regional Workshop on Preventing Radicalization to Violent Extremism and ViolenceinCorrectionalServices,thefirstofitskindfortheSADCCorrectionalServicesattheAtlanticHotel,WalvisBayfrom11to14April.

The main objectives of the workshop was amongst others, to equip and enhance knowledgeamongsttheHeadsofCorrections/Prisons/PenitentiaryServicesandother participantsonpreventingradicalisationandtoindicatethattheSADCSecretariatis puttingarobustapproachtoimplementingregionalandinternationalinstrumentsand focusing on capacity building to enable correctional service capacity to peace buildingintheregion.

Thisimportantworkshop,fullyfundedbySADCSecretariatwasattendedbyheadsof Corrections/Prisons/Penitentiary Services fromAngola, Botswana, Democratic RepublicofCongo,Eswatini,Lesotho,Madagascar,Malawi,Mauritius,Mozambique, Namibia,Seychelles,SouthAfrica,Tanzania,ZambiaandZimbabwe.

HonourableDrAlbertKawana,theMinisterofHomeAffairs,ImmigrationSafetyand SecuritysaidattheopeningceremonyoftheSADCworkshopforheadsofcorrections /prisons/penitentiaryservicesinhisstatementreadbytheExecutiveDirectorofhis ministry, Mr Etienne Maritz that he is pleased to learn that this meeting will focus mainly on “Preventing radicalization, violent extremism, and recruitment through InstitutionalandStatecooperation”.

Kawana said in his opening address that as Chair of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security, Namibia is focused in executing the mandate of the Organ whichis“toprovideafoundationofPeaceandStabilityintheSADCRegion,”asa prerequisite for the achievement of SADC objectives of socio-economic development, poverty eradication, and regional integration, as espoused in the SADC Vision2050andtheSADCRegionalIndicativeStrategicDevelopmentPlan(RISDP) 2020-2030.”

Kawanasaid,“thisobjectiveispartofthePlanofActionontheimplementationofthe CounterTerrorismStrategyfortheSADCRegionandtheultimateobjectiveisforour peopletoenjoypeaceandstability Therefore,thegoalistopursueasaferRegionwith special focus on prevention and readiness to counter violent extremism and radicalisationwithinourCorrectional/Prisons/Penitentiaryinstitutions.”

Theministersaidhelearnedthatplacesofdetentionhavebecometargetsforviolent attacksforvariousreasonsincludingfreeingforrecruitment.“Assuch,Correctional/ Prisons/PenitentiaryServiceshaveahugeroletoplayinmaintainingandcontributing totheirnationalsecurityinparticular,andregionalsecurityingeneralbyavertingthe recruitment of violent extremists within institutions and putting in place security measuresforpreparednessandreadinessforattacks.”

According to Kawana, Peace and Security have prevailed in the most part of the SADCRegion,thereforemanyMemberStatesmightnothaveconsideredthesubject of violent extremism, let alone putting in place security measures to prevent this threat.“However,nocountryisimmunetoviolentextremismandCorrectional/Prisons/Services,as4Governmentagencies,haveanobligationtosecureconfidence thattheyhavetheabilitytopreventandrespondtothreats.”

According to Moruti, One of the critical partners to support durable peace building efforts is the correctional/prison/penitentiary service. “Governments, civil society actors,regionalorganizations,andinternationalpartnersallhaveakeyroletoplayin deradicalization.”

Moruti added that Correctional service has a cardinal mandate in peace building regardingprotectinghumanrightsandde-radicalizingextremism.“Itisworthnoting the need for strong coordination and collaboration between the police, justice, and correctionsinstitutionswhenwetalkaboutrobustpeacebuildinginterventions.The linkagesbetweenterrorism,conflict,andtheruleoflawareclearandneedemphasis duringdiscussionsofthecriminaljusticesystemcontinuum,“Morutisaid. Honourable NevilleAndre, Governor of Erongo region said in his opening remarks that it is common knowledge that the SADC region is among the very few communitiesthatenjoypeaceandstabilityinAfrica,ifnotintheworld.“However,we arenotimmunetoinsurgencies,aswecanallattestthatsomepartsofourregionare experiencing these worrisome activities. Fish certification for NovaNam

NovaNamhasbeenhonouredwiththefirstFISHStandardforCrewInternational Certification,ratifyingtheexcellenceofitslabourstandardsonboarditsdeep-sea fishing trawlers operating in the country. The audit has been carried out by BureauVeritas.

NovaNam has become the first company in the world to be awarded the Fairness, Integrity, Safety,andHealth(FISH)

Standard for Crew certification. The entire NovaNam deepseafishingfleet(consisting of wet-fish and freezer factory deep-sea trawlers, includingtherecently newly built LALANDII 1, NOVANAM ONE and NOVANAM TWO) has obtained the FISH Standard for Crew labourcertificate.

The certification was awarded after the Bureau Veritas, conductedanauditbyinspecting and evaluating the fleet under demanding standard and interviewing the crews The FISH

Standard for Crew is an accredited, global, independent certification program, which assures that labour practices on vessels in wild capture fisheries areusingethicallabour practices and provide for the proper treatmentofcrews.

FISH certifies fair and ethical labour compliance on board its fishing vessels, in which a crew of about 300 people work at NovaNam's home port in Lüderitz as well as WalvisBay

FISHstandsfor4principles – being socially re-sponsible labour practices and ethical behaviours, the establishment of fair conditions of service for all fishers, assurances ofthesafetyandhealth of all fishers, and the provision of decent accommodations, waterandfood.

Thesearepartofthe28 criteria that ratify the cor-rect compliance withinternationalcon-

ventions and labour legislationonboard.

The LALANDII 1, Captain Alrick Anickel,saidthat“theaudit wentwellandwashappythatsuchasystemis introduced to monitor how the sea-going team is treated and what working conditionsareinplace”.

“Going to sea is our bread and butter, and we are happy with what NovaNam is giving us on board. We are well taken care of, and it feels like our second home,” Anickelsaid.

NovaNam Group Managing Director Edwin Kamatoto said with the FISH Standard for Crew certification,itisevidentthat thecompanywasatthe forefront of sustainability in its social aspect. “We believe this internationally recognised FISH certification ensures that fishers are treated fairly, ethically, and responsibly Thesafety

and health of our people along with decent working conditions and fair wages areessentialaspectsof our culture as a company,”Kamatotosaid.

HeaddedthattheFISH certification gives harvesters a way to demonstrate their commitment to fairness and responsibility to theirstakeholders.

“The focus on the responsible treatment of workers is only increasinglocally,regionally, and inter-nationally,andstakeholders expectthatseafoodnot only stems from environmentally sound and sustainable sources,butitisoperatedin socially responsible waysaswell,”hesaid.

The NovaNam Group, the Namibian subsidiary of the seafood company Nueva Pescanova, has been operating in Namibia for 33 years. It employs more than 2,300 people, including Nelago Kwedhi, Namibia's first female trawler captain.

In 2022, NovaNam carried out a total of 111 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) actions aligned with UNSDGs.

Mothers need a support system, a good remedy for post-partum depression

TheErongoRegionMaternityandNew-bornHealthSymposiumaimedatgiving feedbackintermsofmaternalhealthonnew-bornhealthissueswhichwasinitiated aboutthreeyearsagotookplaceatDolphinBeachnearWalvisBayonWednesday eveningthisweek.

DrSebastianGerickeaPaediatricianbasedattheCottage Medi-Clinic and whose practice has partnered with the Medi-clinic to establish the Erongo Region Maternity and New-born Symposium said the symposium aims to givefeedback,“welookatourdatafromeveryrespective yeartoseewhatwearedoing,howmanydeliveriesdowe have,whatcomplicationsdowehave,whataresomeof thetrendsthatweseeintermsofmaternalhealthonnewborn health issues so that we can do some early interventionthings.”

According to Gericke, they have launched some of the quality control initiatives from this program already Some of them include universal group b streptococcus screening which is important for babies. Gericke said a lotofmotherscarryagerminthevaginaltrackandifthey pick those up during screening, they can do preventive antibioticsinlabourforthosemotherstopreventdisease inbabiesaswell.

Some of the other things that the health partners are excitedaboutistheBabyMilkBank.Gerickesaid,“We haveamothermilkbankthatwealsostartedin2019.So, we screen healthy mothers with HIV and Hepatitis B screenings.Wedoalifestylequestionnairewiththemand then they donate milk to us. The milk is pasteurized at Medi-clinic,wehaveourownpasteurizemilkthatweuse forpre-termbabies,asyoumightknowpre-termbabies aren't able to drink formular milk safely due to some safetyconcernssoduetothatwemustgivemothersmilk andthatiswhywearehappythatweareabletoprovide that.”

The Milk Bank is also free to the mothers in the unit, “hopefully we can extend to provide to other places as well.Theprogramisrunningquitestrong,andwehavea verynicesupplyofmother'smilksafeandpasteurize.”

Some of the other quality improvement initiative that theyhavehadistochallengethetransportationservices. Gerickecallsontothetransportationemergencyservices in terms of sick babies in Namibia, he said, “Currently none of the service providers that supply the Erongo region's emergency transport for babies to Windhoek haveevengotaneonatalventilator So,wecannotsafely transport babies. Every April, Stepping Stone School Swakopmund, the only school for autistic childreninNamibiacelebratesWorldAutismAwarenessMonthwhichtheUnited Nations General Assembly declared to highlight the need to help improve the qualityoflifeofthosewithautism.

The United Nations General Assembly unanimouslydeclared2AprilasWorldAutism AwarenessDaytohighlighttheneedtohelp improve the quality of life of those with autism so they can lead full and meaningful livesasanintegralpartofsociety

Autism is a lifelong neurological condition that manifests during early childhood, irrespective of gender, race, or socio-economic status. The term Autism Spectrum referstoarangeofcharacteristics.

Appropriate support, accommodation, and acceptance of this neurological variation allow those on the Spectrum to enjoy equal opportunity, and full and effective participationinsociety

Autismismainlycharacterisedbyitsunique social interactions, non-standard ways of learning, keen interests in specific subjects, inclination to routines, challenges in typical communicationsandparticularwaysofprocessing sensory information. The rate of autisminallregionsoftheworldishighand the lack of understanding has a tremendous impact on individuals, their families, and communities.

The stigmatisation and discrimination associated with neurological differences remain substantial obstacles to diagnosis and therapies,anissuethatmustbeaddressedbyboth public policymakers in developing nations, aswellasdonorcountries.

Stepping Stone School Swakopmund consists ofapre-schoolandprimaryschoolandhas34 special needs learners, and many of them depend on sponsorship. The school has seven fullyqualifiedteachersforautisticscholarsand four assistant teachers who are trained at the school. Co-founder of Stepping Stone School, Gaby Tirronen said autistic children in most cases need one-on-one attention. The reason whytheyneedsomanyteachersattheschool. Theschoolisopentoautisticandotherspecial needschildren.Commendingonsponsorships, Tirronen said, “many children are sponsored, however, we need twenty four more sponsors, these twenty four are on a waiting list. Due to Corona and Ukraine war, we lost a lot of formerly generous sponsors.”The school is dividedintotwostreams,TheComplexNeedsand theLearningSupport.

According to Tirronen, Autism is not wellknown in Namibia. Tirronen said, “we do intense awareness campaigns during April, whichisaninternationalevent. Miller and Du Plessis win Nedbank Cross Country

Alex Millerand Monique Du Plessis won the Elite Men's andWomen's divisions at the Nedbank Cross Country Olympic (XCO) Namibian National Championships race that took place on the weekendof 7and 8AprilinSwakopmund.

The two-day national mountain bike race organized by the Namibia Cycling Federation (NCF)togetherwithCycles4USwakopmundsaw close to 100 cyclists compete in the different race categories,whichincludedu/14/18BoysandGirls, Short Course Men and Women Open, u/12 Sprog Boys,u/14Sub-JuniorGirls,u/10NipperBoysand Girls,u/12SprogGirls,u/16YouthBoysandGirls, u/14 Sub-Junior Boys, Sub Vet Men and Women, Veteran Men and Women, Master and Grandmaster Men and Women, Elite Men and Women, u/23 Men and Women, and Junior Men andWomen.

Namibian cyclists took part in the elite, u/23, and Junior races battled it out for Union Cyclist International (UCI) points, which are an internationally recognised points system for boosting each cyclist's world ranking that determines placement in international events like theOlympics.Theyear'scompetitionalsosawthe introduction of the new E-Bike race category and an XCC-Short Track category for elite cyclists whichisaracesimilartoXCOracing,butwithlaps typicallyunderonekilometerandinlesstechnical terrain.

Alex Miller won the Elite Men's division with a time of 01:23:41 with Hugo Hahn (01:27:29) secondandXavierPapo(01:37:29)third.

Monique Du Plessis (01:26:09) won the women's divisionwithNicolaFester(01:30:58)secondand

Zaren Knight (01:32: 45) third, Andre Steinfurth won the first-ever Men's E-Bike UCI race, while Elvira Dickerson won the first-ever Women's EBikeUCIrace.

Micah Chase (22:33) won the Sprog Boys (U/12) with Christo Nell (26:48) second and Max Heigan (27:36) third. Qara Volschenk (19:27) won the women's division with Carl van der Westhuizen (19:36)second.

In Julius Braun (50:11) won the Sub-Junior Boys (U/14) followed by Daniel Hennes (52:38) and Janro Greeff (53:43) third. Nicole Suren (25:07) wonthewomen'sdivisionwithBiancaNell(26:25) second and Anne Cramer (27:11) third TheJuniorMen'sdivisionwaswonbyKevinLowe and Eden Spangenberg won the Junior Women's division.GregChase(47:33)wontheMasterMen's division with Nick Du Plessis (48:48) second and Hans Du Toit (49:30) third. Development Camp with great success

This past weekend NIIHA hosted its largest ever development training camp, aimedattheyouthinNamibiaplayingthesportofInlineHockey.

Over80kids,aged4to12attendedthecampandhada fantastictime.ThecampwasheldatDTSinWindhoek and was organized by the Namibian Ice and Inline Hockey Association (NIIHA). The camp was run by Namibia'sNationalHeadCoachandtheCoastalPirates Coach,BrianSobel,ScorpionsCoach,MarcoDebortoli andKamikazeCoach,EricBaldwin.

Assisting the coaches were some of the Namibia's World Champion Gold medal winning ladies, Leighzene Coetzee (Pirates) and Lana Bajorat (Badgers)andamemberoflastyear'sStateWarsGold medal winning Ladies team, Maja von Somnitz (Kamikaze) and a volunteer from the Argentinian JuniorLadiesNationalTeam,AlmaAmeigeiras.

The camp was held Friday night, all day Saturday and Sunday morning. The 80 plus kids, who were broken downinto3groupsbasedonage,workedhardthrough all the sessions where skating, shooting, passing and stick-handlingwerethefocus.

TheSaturdaynightsessionsawthegroupsplayamatch against each other Bernd Bajorat, NIIHA President said, “These camps are the foundation of future Federation and National Teams. Getting these kids together, from different clubs and exposing them to different coaches, different players and new ideas is

what growth is allabout.I hope theymadenew friends and that they can work together to build a better Namibia.”

OyoHinda(age12),amemberoflastyear'sStateWars teams, who won a couple of medals, including a gold medalfortheGirlsMinorDivisionsaid,“Thisweekend wassomuchfun!Iwassohappytoseeeveryoneagain andplaysomehockey.”

ThecampwasopentoanyNIIHAplayer,regardlessof skill level. The camp had some seasoned players who havebeenoverseasonceortwiceandbeginnerswhohad beenplayingforonlyacoupleofmonths.Everyonewas welcomeandeachplayerwasgivenattentionandmade to feel they belonged there. Ayden Lotfi (age 8), who attended his first camp said, “It was awesome. I made somenewfriendsandhadalotoffun!”

Next on the NIIHA calendar is the National Team trainingcampatSwakopmundontheweekendof14to 16April.Thatisfollowedbythefirsttournament,hosted by Badgers Inline hockey club at Windhoek Showgrounds starting on 21 April 2023.
