TRENDS FOR 2022

I am Buzwe Mabuza, owner of a design and project management company called Design Dreams International. I’m a doting dad, avid golfer and cigar aficionado.

GREEN LIVING

What sets my work apart from the rest is that understanding your space is an extension of your personality, I seek to extend my clients’ personalities into their spaces. Your essence will never date – while trends come and go, you will always be relevant. www.ddi.co.za

HOME & DÉCOR TRENDS 2022

Design Dreams International

The consumer is a lot more aware these days due to the exposure that comes with social media. The world has become smaller – it’s become so easy to see what trends are big in different parts of the world. Green living is still top of the list, but looking at the direction fashion is going in embracing more culturally inspired looks with vibrant colours and geometrics, I see a lot more colour coming into homes and design.

I am Rekgotswe Mapudi Mahlare, founder of House of A Goddess, which aims for durable, timeless styling in luxury interior finishings. I am also a cloud technology specialist in the ICT sector. As co-founder, Lerato Lelaka is a stickler for perfection. We merged, with her extensive experience in building, infrastructure and PR providing an end-to-end full turnkey service for building, renovations, interior furnishing and styling. TIMELESS STYLING

OneTwo Photography

Interior trends for next year will lean on a variety of creative wall applications such as wall panelling, wall moulding, architraves and wallpaper. We will also see a lot of minimalistic furnishings, soft palettes of natural woods with accentuation of greenery such as pampas grass, and green ornaments. For colour, we are looking at mustard yellow, royal blues, greens, and black and white in occasional furniture. What sets House of A Goddess apart from the rest is understanding our client brief by taking our client through a 3D presentation of their project and mood board with sampled textures. This gives our clients the ease of a stress-free project journey that they too will thoroughly enjoy instead of being stressed and unsure. @houseofagoddess HOME & DÉCOR TRENDS 2022

phrase like “design is in the detail” is often thrown around in the industry, but only truly experienced in a home like this. From the architecture to the interiors, this property has been planned with great detail and finesse. Contemporary facades paired with bold, modern interiors make this home refreshing in aesthetic, yet inviting in its feel. The owners said the large established trees were a great attraction as was the large plot with plenty of space for the children to run and play.

>

24

ABOVE: Briefed by the home owner and architect to aid in creating a spacious and airy home, Inso Architectural Solutions designed and manufactured glass solutions as large as possible, while maintaining the ease of use to its product. Here the company also supplied the custom-made shutters to achieve a simple and clean aesthetic. OPPOSITE PAGE, TOP: Texture and colour are what the home owners highlighted in their brief to kitchen design and manufacturing company The Kitchen Studio. These directives translated into a space that not only excites the senses, but is also inspiring for the family. REHAU crystal white in crystal gloss was selected for the cabinetry, and beautifully accented with rustic walnut veneer in the artisan Oslo stain and paired with 20mm Dekton Aura 15 countertops. From textural elements on the walls to the bold colours used on various surfaces in the home, functionality remains key. OPPOSITE PAGE, BOTTOM: Priding itself on fine craftsmanship and joinery work, Houdtmeulen was commissioned to produce the wooden flooring, decking and screens for this home. Working with Accoya and engineered oak, the company uses solid timber in its architectural joinery resulting in exceptional products and workmanship, while providing clients with a bespoke aesthetic.

Regarding the brief to the architect, they say: “We wanted our home to be a modern space, but very warm and welcoming with wooden flooring, wooden cladding, and warm textured detailing. We also wanted large windows and doors, lots of natural light

to stream in and open-plan living spaces that flow easily from the inside out.” The result is a beautiful five-bedroom family home that can entertain loved ones effortlessly, which is what the owners love.

>

BELOW: Seeking the ideal study and home office, the owners commissioned The Kitchen Studio to design and manufacture the necessary cabinetry. Here the firm used grey leather and beam oak veneer for the cabinetry doors and 32mm beam oak for the worktops. The result is a warm and inviting space that is a visual delight. The design plays with texture, yet makes a sophisticated and bold statement. The Kitchen Studio is based in Cape Town, Durban and Joburg.

HOUDTMEULEN 072 647 4412 LEFT: Highlighting the beauty of timber, Houdtmeulen’s bespoke craftsmanship in its product offering is unmatched. For this home, the company supplied and installed the wooden flooring, and produced the solid oak doors, maintaining the home’s sleek look and feel, while complementing the contemporary interiors. Houdtmeulen is passionate about bespoke wooden architectural joinery. The firm sources first-grade eco-friendly materials, ensuring great quality.

“The open-plan living areas are where we spend most of our time with our family and friends. The design is conducive to having a large number of people, while still feeling warm and intimate if we only have a few people around. We love hosting large family and social gatherings, and want our guests to be comfortable.” For the couple, the interiors needed to reflect their personalities, while creating a homely environment. Working with an interior design firm to achieve this, they went for a contemporary aesthetic, featuring beautifully crafted furniture, bold wallpaper, striking art, and varying colours and texture. “We love colour and wanted punches of blues, some red, and then the neutrals to offset the colours chosen for the open-plan living areas. The bedrooms were left up to our interior designer, Cheryl Herweg, to design and curate.” Filled with character, this home offers its family so much to savour.

A TASTE of colour

THE CAPE ART COMPANY GIVES US A TASTE OF WHAT’S TRENDING FOR THE SEASON 1. COLOUR COMBOS. Pairing colours is where it’s at. Warm greys paired with tan camels, terracottas and brown blacks. The combination of black on tan or tan on black is a smart choice. Keep an eye out for ochres and colours of cracked earth. The key is seeing colours in combination. Isolated colours are often not what we are looking for. What’s more important is how we combine the colours. 2. MAXIMALISM. Forget minimalism and its constraints. Moving towards maximalism will give you that creative edge. The Cape Art Company’s curated wall art will add a stylish flair to your creativity. A blend of historical designs and colour, layers and textures and mixed art work allows the maximalist to create an interior that not only blends with contemporary décor, but creates an interior that is vastly unique. Maximalism allows you to free your imagination. The key here is to connect the dots and pay close attention to design elements such as repetition and shape to build your desired design scheme. 3. GROUNDED NEUTRALS. Earthy and honest neutrals are currently trending. Choose colour palettes of earthy browns, tans, warm greys and greens – and especially terracotta. hen this family decided they wanted to spend their holidays in style, right beside the ocean, what they found was this gorgeous piece of paradise. A revamp included redoing the pool patio, where luxurious timber decking was laid. A convenient built-in braai and counter were put in to allow for entertaining on warm summer nights.

eing an interior designer, the owner of this standout home was not afraid to play with design and texture. Although the palette of black, grey and white is fairly neutral, striking pops of colour and liberal use of patterns add panache. The couple wanted a dramatic change from the masculine, clean lines of their previous home, so when building in a residential estate, situated in the south of Johannesburg, they opted for a design that was feminine and curvy.

ABOVE: The owner wanted an ultra-modern family home that reflects the family’s wanderlust and appreciation for global design. GMB Architects has an “out of the box” approach to architectural design, adding value through uniqueness and creativity. The brief called for high ceilings and expansive living and dining spaces. Focal features include a private home cinema, walk-in cellar and gym with an unobstructed view of the golf course. GMB Architects strives to provide an architectural service of a high standard that makes a positive contribution to the built environment.

“We think we are a very bold couple. We take a lot of chances and we are not afraid to push the envelope.” – the home owners LEFT: By clustering a collection of Smoke Glass Retro Ball Pendants, hung at varying heights, U-Light has elevated ambient lighting to a showstopping art work. Each pendant boasts unique, curvy lines that reflect the feminine tone of the home and add a touch of flair to this space above the patterned staircase.

The final product is an eclectic, multidimensional home with an array of decorative styles including carved doors and architraves from Zanzibar, modern and sleek pieces, Art Decoinspired areas and repurposed classical furniture with the trademark ball-and-claw feet. An imposing statue guarding the entrance window has become a useful landmark when giving visitors directions. “Our style is definitely eclectic. We have interesting elements and pieces everywhere.”

The house was constructed to incorporate natural elements. Rocks left behind after the blasting of the basement level have been used in gabion walls around the property and to create the massive natural rockery. Blending seamlessly with the environment, it feels like it was always there. A highly patterned laser-cut spiral staircase dominates the centre of the house. “We think we are a very bold couple. t’s not often that you come a across a home that is not only beautiful, but also functional, with each space used to its full advantage. This is what makes this home special to its owners. It was built with family in mind, and every element was carefully chosen to breathe life into the spaces. The story of this home started when the owners’ old house became too small for their growing children. For an idyllic location they looked no further than the neighbourhood that they were living in.

54

What was meant to be a remodel with alternations ended up as a complete overhaul with nothing but a few original foundation walls downstairs left as remnants of the old building. Both the ground and first floors were extended, resulting in a house that’s three times bigger under the roof. Only one room is the same as before, says the owner. “Unlike our previous home, which was smaller, we actually use every room – it is a homely home,” says the owner. She says this goes for the gym, kids’ playroom, entertainment space and outdoor living spaces – all of which are used every day.

Adding to their wellness experience at home is also a sauna and steam room. The owners injected their personality into the interiors through their unique sense of style using colour and texture to create warm and inviting spaces. From the furniture to the finishes, colours and materials – everything was carefully selected to create a homely feel. Each with its own look and feel, no two rooms are the same – but like a well-orchestrated symphony, everything in this home comes together in perfect harmony. Q

K

itchens have never worked harder than over the past year. From baking banana bread to cooking up elaborate gourmet meals for loved ones, efficient kitchen designs have proved their worth for many who were housebound over lockdown. If your kitchen is no longer working for your culinary needs, it’s time to update. Here are a few top trends for consideration:

Remember the fresh feel of the all-white kitchen? This trend is slowing down as we see the rise of the moody and dark kitchen with striking lighting, says Melanie Stein of EuroCasa. “Textured, dramatic worktops are definitely featuring. Matt cabinetry, also with textured detail, is becoming an interesting addition to the kitchen space. Not forgetting the comeback of some of the most beautiful dark wood veneers,” says Stein. If the fearless trend of dark, masculine colours are too bold for you, then Shabnaam Khan of Fabri South Africa suggests a timeless grey. “A classic shade of grey defies seasonal trends. The appreciation for natural tones and textures is being revived, such as softer shades of beige and white.”

DARK AND MOODY

SLEEK AND SIMPLE Minimalism still dominates in contemporary kitchen design. Linear Concepts’ Selma Zaifoglu says: “Simplicity is remarkable. Built-in appliances, handless cabinets, matt finishes and more – all of these contribute to the style we just can’t get enough of and will see more of this year.

The Kitchen Studio

“Rid your space of unnecessary or clunky accessories and embrace the clean countertop look. Not only will it mean less cleaning, but it’ll also be easier on the eyes.” From a material perspective, thin surfaces offer that desirable sleek, minimalist aesthetic, and are not limited to just worktops. Nialè van der Merwe of Easylife Kitchens says: “Quartz and compact surfaces are used for cladding, tiling, splashbacks and furniture. The colour ranges available are many – from glossy marble to matt monochrome-honed surfaces.”

THE HARD CHOICE As home owners are spending more time in their kitchens, the need for quality hardware is becoming a must. Klyne Maharaj of The Kitchen Studio notes: “We’re seeing an increased focus on high quality hardware in kitchen design. Drawer runners with no lateral movement, like Hettich’s AvanTech YOU, are a great option. “If you’re planning a kitchen in 2022, you need to consider the vast array of accessories and features that can improve the functionality of your space. Make use of cupboard organisers, pullout larders, countertop organisers and pullouts for spices.”

THE KITCHEN KIT Jon Molyneaux of Miele South Africa shares leading trends in kitchen appliances:

Smart appliances are the new norm. They help maximise energy efficiency, and are easier and more convenient to use – essentially saving the user time, and ensuring perfect results time and time again.

THE CUSTOM FIT A one-size solution is no longer an option, as more home owners are designing their spaces to not only reflect themselves, but also suit their lifestyles and efficiency needs. Craig Dexter of nuuma points out: “Custom design is essential as we are all seeking that personal experience. More consideration is given to materials and design elements to ensure the space is personal.” On-point technology is favoured in making the space more user-friendly for the owner. Philip Richards of blu_line says: “There’s a strong movement towards kitchen design that focuses on creating a space that can adapt to the environment, enhancing the experience of every person in the home. “Making the space more efficient, we continue to develop an integration of technology into the material space through our sensorline range.” Innovation is everything, and Mathilda Venter of Valcucine South Africa says new and exciting technologies and appliances are becoming available locally. “Smart appliances with integrated cameras and the use of apps allow you to pop out to the grocery store while your roast is cooking in the oven. Miele’s Dialog Oven Technology is completely customisable for different cooking durations.” Q With thanks to blu_line, Candy Appliances, Easylife Kitchens, EuroCasa, Fabri South Africa, Linear Concepts, Miele South Africa, nuuma, The Kitchen Studio and Valcucine South Africa

Induction hobs are incredibly popular due to the many benefits they offer: they heat up really quickly, they are extremely energy-efficient, they allow you to accurately control the temperature, their Ceran surface makes for a sleek, flush-mounted finish, and they produce very little residual heat for safer operation.

More home appliances are offering the ability to control and operate your appliances the same way you would operate your smartphone – via a touchscreen. To this end, Miele has launched M Touch technology, which allows the appliance to be operated quickly and intuitively by touching or swiping the clear text touchscreen.

athrooms have moved beyond the purely functional to becoming curated spaces offering a spa-like retreat from the demands of working from home. Combinations of colours, textures and natural materials that create bespoke bathrooms with a distinctly personal touch are among the key design trends for 2022.

COLOUR ME CONTEMPORARY Matt black is a sought-after colour choice, especially as it gives contemporary brassware a bold profile, says Emma Joyce, brand manager (bathrooms) of Victoria + Albert Baths. Italtile agrees that matt black is being used a lot – from taps to basins and cottage pen shower screens. But blues and greens also feature prominently as nature takes the lead in design inspiration. White remains a timeless classic, especially for subway tiles – a key bathroom trend. And custom-designed wallpaper is popular as it allows you to create a space unique to your home.

With more time being spent at home, there’s a shift towards natural aesthetics, says Elizma Nass, global marketing director of special projects for DADOquartz Bathware. Locally sourced materials such as tumbling bush and tree stem logs add an element of freedom to bathroom design.

Create your personal spa Transform your bathroom into a personal spa by installing heated towel rails. In a nod to the current colour trend of combining different finishes, pair a matt black heated towel ring and soap rack with a polished stainless steel paper holder. You can even install a hand towel rail on a glass shower door to use space more effectively in a smaller bathroom – Danielle Turton, Bathroom Butler

70

“The combinations and additions of materials to create unique textured surfaces and decorative elements are not only a trend, they are a must,” she says. The juxtaposition of marble, especially for floor and wall tiles, with woody tones in basins and accessories, is becoming a strong design feature. Italtile reports that its new Intarsi range, in a mixture of marble and wood from Italy in a patchwork style, is currently on-trend. It brings the biophilic (connecting spaces with nature) design into play using two natural-look elements. Lifestyle Ceramics is creating evocative combinations with wood, marble and stone, and stone and textured elements.

STATEMENT TILES Always a feature in any bathroom, tiles allow you to make your own statement with a pop of colour or an interesting pattern. You can opt for the timeless subway tile, or experiment with different shapes and layouts, says Neville Philpott of Tile Collage. The classic white tile is still a dependable trend, but black slate is making a comeback with contrasts of beautiful greenery and wooden accessories, says Ulanova van der Merwe of Artmar Natural Stone. Introduce colours by using strips of different-hued marble tiles to create a chevron pattern on floors or walls, she says. Other tile trends include herringbone patterns for floors, walls and the shower area and fish scale-shaped tiles to create an artistic focal point. Pearl white or turquoise fan mosaic tiles create modern bathroom spaces, says Bathroom Butler. Also experiencing a revival is the textured look of terrazzo, says the team from Tile Africa. It is being used in combination with warm neutrals, soft cement and woodlook patterns. The return of terracotta pairs well with the new shades of blue and green being used.

The villa concept The integration of a bathroom into the bedroom is a spectacular home design trend that’s growing in popularity. We like to call it the villa concept. It’s ideal for South African weather and allows for bathing and shower options inside and out. – Elizma Nass, DADOquartz Bathware

Indoor/outdoor luxury When creating an outdoor shower and relaxation area, use the same tile as the bathroom to give it a seamless flow and extend the bathroom throughout. BATHROOM BLISS Clean, simple lines remain popular in line with the shift towards minimalist living. Baths are very seldom built-in, says Glenn Varrie of Summer Place Spas. He says bathrooms have become like home spas with the addition of hydrotherapy bathtubs, steam showers and a revival of saunas because of their health benefits. Showers are more spacious and opulent. Double showers with integrated seating evoke a sense of being at a spa. The shower tray is outdated, and Varrie says in-floor shower drains and glass dividers and partitions rather than shower doors make for seamless bathroom floors blending into the shower space. Basin combinations add exciting design detail to bathrooms. These include top-mounted basins combined with half- and full-pillar basins. Look out for semi-recessed, top-mounted vessels in contemporary homes, says Nass. The team from Artmar says natural stone, fully integrated basins are particularly popular for master bathrooms. Structured black, stainless steel, bronze and anthracite tap finishes add flair to modern bathrooms, says Nass. Van der Merwe says brass taps and black taps will be a staying trend, especially when used with natural stone. Interchangeable tap bodies and handles allow for new levels of personalisation, says the Tile Africa team.

Sole Mix Luc gloss glazed porcelain tiles Tiles are a key element in the personalisation of bathrooms and Italtile says Moroccan-style tiles are making a big splash this year. Italtile’s Sole Mix decoration offers 37 graphic variants in a range of colours that recall the infinite shades of Mediterranean landscapes. – Italtile

SET THE MOOD Aside from the ambience they create, lanterns – modern and classic – are making a comeback as we continue to live with load shedding, says Nass. Soft illumination around mirrors, bathroom vanities and textured wall panelling help set the right tone. Another mood enhancer is a bathroom mirror that allows you to change the Kelvin light from pure white to a warm white. LED strips placed under the vanity’s top edge will give your bathroom a subtle glow, says Van der Merwe. Q With thanks to Artmar Natural Stone, Bathroom Butler, DADOquartz Bathware, Destinkt. g p y g g, new and exciting trends to uplift and inspire the interiors spaces of a home. With insight from furniture and fabric experts, we share what can be expected for the year ahead:

According to Aldon McLeod of TrueDesign, sustainability and natural elements are dominating furniture trends for 2022. “We are seeing light colours of white, wheat and muted greys, with a focus on textures in the form of natural timber elements, stone, like white marble, and retro elements such as Indian cane.” A specialist in wooden furniture, Woodbender’s Margaret Steenkamp also notes the increasing popularity of natural materials in furniture design. “Natural wood, shades of warm brown and green, clean design lines, floating surfaces and a subtle merge of retro and zen elements are all coming through in current furniture design.”

“As we embrace a more organic approach to our spaces, furniture will become more integrated into architecture. There will be a continued process of decluttering and simplification, and an embracing of past pieces by repurposing them into new treasures.” – Kim Williams

80

MATERIAL MATTERS With the movement towards sustainable interiors, Simonne Christie of Sofacompany believes 2022 will see a closer affinity to natural and cosy materials such as linen and cotton, clay and brick, velvet, and ceramics. These will be used to create a calming and organic environment in our homes. “This new calm is a natural sequence of the overall search for slow quality in our lives; slow dynamics, slow food and less stress of the everyday rhythms, a longer and more stable life for the things we use,” she says. “Durability of furniture and decorative items made from more sustainable materials will also promote a greater respectful approach to nature and ourselves.” Upholstered furniture in performance fabrics is hugely popular for the foreseeable future for its innovation and longevity. Shruthi Nair of Furniturespot points out: “Performance fabrics are taking over. A piece could be not only beautifully upholstered, but durable too, proving to be a responsible way to have an almost everlasting upholstered item. Subtle patterns in woven upholstery, floral upholstery, corduroys and velvets are a Cassina definite go-to to liven up a (distributed by luxe interior.” TrueDesign)

BOUTIQUE-STYLE GLAM Bringing the glam home, the focus will also be on switching up living spaces to reflect more boutique-style interiors, says Johann De Waal of KARE Johannesburg. “We see the mixing of modern contemporary shapes and plush materials to create eye-catching statement pieces with a selection of unique and bold designs. “One of the most popular will be furniture with rounded soft edges in cosy, soft-touch fabrics such as velvet and suede.” Curves are certainly cool this year. Elaborating on this hot trend, Créma Design’s Donna-Lee Smith says: “European furniture trends are leaning towards more voluptuous designs. Curvaceous furniture, quilted fabrics and large seat cushions will continue trending and the use of smart/multifunctional furniture will be trending in 2022.”

According to Selona Singh of Roche Bobois South Africa and Mauritius, a trend of minimalist design is expected and recognised as the fashionable interior of 2022, but it’s not complete minimalism. “This trend is more about minimal decoration and furniture use, making room for airiness and free space and by using colourful pieces to enhance the area.

“Keep bigger pieces more neutral as you are less likely to change these often, add splashes of colour with our armchairs, rugs, or scatters, and accessorise with minimal decoratives to achieve this ‘new’ trend.” Q

Nature-inspired. Comfortable, calm, cosy and versatile – these are all key for this trend. All-natural textures and nature-inspired prints and patterns will be a major focus for South African interior design. Designers are taking inspiration from their surroundings and embodying this trend.

T

he impact of lockdown on colour can’t be ignored. Trending at the moment is the rediscovery of nature, expressed through calm and comforting yet colourful effects inside the home. “And what better way [to do this] than by incorporating colours that remind you of the outside world, such as blues, greens and warm neutral shades,” says Dulux colour expert Palesa Ramaisa. There is also a marked shift towards warmer greys and neutrals. “Pale neutrals create the illusion of space and provide a sense of serenity and softness. A warm grey shade is not only beautiful, but also practical, as it pairs well with other colour families and allows for bolder colour accents to shine,” says Duram Smart Paint brand manager Jenny Moolman.

86

Ramaisa says: “Blue has forever been a popular colour that works well for masculine and feminine spaces. The current Dulux Colour of the Year, Bright Skies™, is the perfect example.” This is a versatile, airy, fresh tone that allows you to escape into a peaceful state of mind, she says. You can refresh your walls with this beautiful light blue, which echoes a breath of fresh air. According to Prominent Paints technical training manager Herman Rabe, green is budding everywhere. “It is the rising colour in the design market, and combined with resilience and the need for connection, green is on-trend, en vogue and resonating with consumers across cultures, demographics and geographies.”

For 2022, Plascon has brought together three beautiful earthy African inspired colours. This colour combination works in a 60:30:10 ratio that aligns with best design practices used in the industry. The suggestion is to have 60% of space in a dominant colour, 30% a secondary colour, and 10% an accent colour. This makes it easier for professionals and homeowners alike to adopt this approach and tastefully achieve a well-considered look.

PPG announced Olive Sprig (PPG1125-4) as Colour of the Year for 2022. “This soft grey-green is soothing, like a fragrant plant, reminiscent of the natural world,” says Rabe. “It brightens any space with an organic liveliness. Inside or out, it’s the perfect refresh. It represents renewal in a post-pandemic world.” Nadine Vosloo, Tjhoko Paint marketing manager, says: “Deep, rich jewel colours for accent walls and statement furniture pieces are a must in your home, specifically emerald green, sapphire blue and deep reddish pink hues. We believe this jewel colour trend will continue for future seasons with the possibility of the vivid deep hues being used individually alongside complementing neutrals to create a visually stimulating home.”

WALLPAPER TRENDS

CARA SAVEN WALL DESIGN

THE BUZZ • Probably the greatest trend we are seeing in wallpaper is people wanting to express their individual style in their wallpaper choices. They choose a particular wallpaper as a form of self-expression and adapt existing designs to their personal colour palette or choose elements that mean something to them, or they design their own wallpapers. • Our homes have become our canvases, and wallpaper is a tool to express who we are and what we are about. • A trend that’s been around for a while but is evolving is that of tropical décor. Not everyone can live with palm trees outside their windows, so using a wallpaper that conjures up the smell of coconuts and the sound of waves is still very much trending in our homes, restaurants and office wallpapers. • Escapism is another trend that has emerged from the many months of lockdowns, and we are seeing this with wallpapers that are fantastical and not rooted in reality. The colours are also more vivid and mixed in surprising and extraordinary ways.

“Deep, rich jewel colours for accent walls and statement furniture pieces are a must in your home.” – Nadine Vosloo, Tjhoko Paint

Cara Saven Wall Design

Tjoko Paint

• In slight contrast to this escapism trend is the one of going back to basics – natural hues like beige and browns and off whites will be popular along with simple lines and shapes that are reminiscent of nature, but have been pared down to their simplest form.

BE YOU! Whatever the trend, stay true to your style. It’s great to gain inspiration and ideas through trends, but remember to make it your own. Elaine Jansen van Rensburg, owner of Effects By Elaine, advises that you do what you love rather than “following the rules”. “Don’t be scared of deep dramatic dark colours or statement metallic design because you think it will make everything look darker. If it brings you joy, do it! Taste is relative to you – be a trendsetter.” Q HOME & DÉCOR TRENDS 2022

COLOURS THAT COUNT Our colour experts share their top picks of this season’s trending paint choices. “Blue is one of those colours that can easily be incorporated into any space because it works so well with other shades. EVERGREEN TRENDS IN WALLPAPER BY WALLPAPERONLINE

When it comes to the latest trends in wallpaper, bestsellers are certainly designs from the plants and marble and stone categories, like these: • The Eucalyptus Watercolour Wallpaper looks gorgeous in any room in the home. It looks particularly pretty in bedrooms and bathrooms because its translucent effect is calming and fresh. • Repeat patterns can make a small room appear larger, and the Trailing Light Vines Wallpaper is a great example of how to achieve this effect in a room. • If you prefer more neutral designs, consider picking a wallpaper with a splash of gold or metallic to add drama, without being too distracting, like the Ground Gold Wallpaper. • If you love a little drama, the Aelia Designer Marble Wallpaper is a beautiful mix of gold honeycomb and opulent marble.

Shereen Lurie shares expert opinion on how our homes will look and function in the decades to come.

Acute Innovation SA

In the decades to come, population growth will continue to impact the way we live and the homes in which we live. More people are living in cities – and clambering for space - than ever before, says Jaco Botha, owner of Jacobotha Architects. “As we continue urbanising, and with worldwide population numbers expected to keep growing, the demand for denser, taller cities will likely lead to more compact living and shared services.” He says: “As resources are limited, urban sprawl that attracts a much higher carbon footprint than densifying existing urban centres will likely come under increased scrutiny. Large houses on large plots will become less attainable, and it is likely that trends will expand around the concept of compact living, utility and digital connectivity.” Global pandemics such as COVID-19 have forced many to rethink how they inhabit and use their homes. Antoinette Horngren, operations and project manager at JK Designs, says that the past 18 months have shown us that the life we consider ‘normal’ is fragile and can change and adapt over time. “We have seen this quite clearly in residential architecture, which has been the most influenced by the recent global pandemic. Homes have become scenes of homeschooling classrooms, entertainment areas, remote-working offices, and fitness centres all under the same roof.”

“We will ask homes to become more and more complex as our society changes and technology grows and evolves to allow unlimited connection and possibilities.” – Antoinette Horngren

Horngren notes that residential architecture has truly revealed its full potential to meet our every need. “In the coming decades, we will ask homes to become more and more complex as our society changes and technology grows and evolves to allow unlimited connection and possibilities. In essence, our homes will become places of unlimited potential.” As a result of this rapid growth in technology, Enrico Daffonchio, principal architect and founder of Daffonchio Architects, says that home automation will become affordable and will, to some extent, affect the way that houses are planned and will work. “Remote work and education may also become more prevalent, so that may create the need for an extra room or couple of rooms or spaces to work and study from home.” Worldwide, the cost of home ownership is high, resulting in affordability issues. Nadine Clarke, principal architect at Meik Architects, anticipates a return to multigenerational homes. “Compact smart spaces that offer flexible arrangements will become more popular as spaces need to become multifunctional.” She calls these “magic inches”; as spaces get smaller, they must

work harder with every inch of space being functional. “Smarter planning and furniture design will also be on the rise, already visible in the Tiny House movement.” Open-plan living, with free-flowing interior layouts, has been the standard for many years, However, says Tyrone Reardon, professional architect and director of Metropole Architects, in the years to come this approach will be extended to bedroom suites too, with no dividing walls between bedroom, bathroom and dressing room. “Spatial delineation is handled with level changes to floors and ceilings as well as screening. The advantage of this approach is that spaciousness is created with effectively the same or less floor area.” Lucky Masegela, director and senior architectural designer for Acute Innovation SA, perceives homes to become more intimate and

Smart innovation 1 In the future, we can expect to see an incredible number of improvements and changes to home tech. These include, says Horngren, improved responsive cooling and heating techniques (driven by climate change), self-repairing qualities and antibacterial properties, among other benefits, in building materials, and the development in AI technology, which means that most of our home’s features will most likely be automated and intuitive.

accommodate multi-use functions, adapting to the physical and fluid social environment. “Designing to cope with climate change and environmental sustainability will be engraved in the functional aesthetics, character and architectural language of our future, and expressed through shape, form and materiality, among others.”

But hope is on the horizon: “We’re likely to see better and improved versions of solar technology, especially as the technology on power storage is developing. Domestically accessible wind-power generation will also likely become more mainstream – especially in areas where the wind is fairly consistent.” In terms of building materials, Horngren says that traditional brick and mortar have stood the test of time, but faster, more sustainable alternatives are making headway in the industry. “Furthermore, building regulations are

Daffonchio says that AI will play a dominant role in home security, reading energy consumption, energy, and water savings, all the way down to simpler applications, like warning you when there’s no milk in the fridge. “It will become pervasive both for the practicality of it and for the data harvesting that is attached to it. We’ll see a push to put sensors everywhere, and having an overarching analysis of all the data assimilated from appliances and cars and other things.”

This will increase energy efficiency in the building industry, as LED lighting is 80 to 90% more energy-efficient than incandescent lights. becoming more defined on required solar performance in buildings, leading to specifications of improved performance glazing, insulation and hot water heating systems.” A good way to keep the home well insulated is with double glazing. Reardon says that while double-glazed door and window systems are the industry standard internationally, singleglazed doors and windows are still predominantly used in South Africa because the costs of the double-glazed option are still too high. “Double glazing significantly outperforms single glazing in every way, including thermally and with energy-saving. In time, as it becomes more affordable, double glazing should replace single glazing as the standard worldwide.” Horngren acknowledges that even though the industry is facing critical shortages of building and construction materials, including cement, steel and timber, the construction industry will be one of the better-performing sectors in the economy in the coming years. “More than half of the sector is funded by the government, leading many South Africans to bypass these shortages and

energy and water consumption, and processing this data through artificial intelligence (AI) to inform design. “As much as this may sound like science fiction, it is already happening in various countries; this is where I feel we will see the most progression, more than something in bricks and mortar or technology.”

HOME AESTHETICS

JK Designs

Our homes are the one space that outwardly reflects our personalities, tastes and everything we hold dear. Bothma sees residential design moving towards a combination of form following function and individualism. This combination influences design to be both modern and unique. “Home owners have more and more options to customise and refine their spaces. This gives architects and interior designers greater freedom to create individual, unique spaces for their clients.” Reardon has, however, found that the usage by many people of popular smartphone applications and other digital media platforms to consume vast quantities of architectural and interior design imagery of projects has had a major impact on the expectations clients have for the design of their homes, as well as also having a profound influence on the creative professionals. “With the overwhelming volume of ideas and inspirational imagery at our disposal, the temptation is to try and implement, in a ‘copy-and-paste’-type fashion, too many ideas into one project,” explains Reardon. “We truly are faced with a situation where we are collectively spoiled for choice. The truth is that a ‘collage’ or synthesis in architectural form of all the inspirational images we have collected is not necessarily a recipe for a successful design, but more likely the opposite without very careful distillation.”

He emphasises that the best architecture, certainly in the case of residential projects, is normally the result of a balance or tension between the artistic aspirations of the design and its response to the site, context, client’s brief and all other functional requirements. “Factors such as topography, orientation, climatic considerations, views, privacy and many other considerations need to be addressed appropriately to create a home that is a pleasure to live in. In contrast, a complete failure to address these issues properly can make a home unliveable and even an unhealthy place.” There is an ever-growing trend towards standardisation and modularisation of building materials and components. According to Botha, the use of 3D printers to automate building processes has also been demonstrated in buildings, which are printed in layers. “All of this points to a notion of creating buildings faster and more cost-effectively, which in turn sets up a certain aesthetic that may lead to interesting new design ‘languages’ in future.” Clarke says the lack of housing worldwide is also a big driver in the rise of systems like 3D-printed homes and modular home building systems. Humans have a strong desire to connect with nature and be nourished by the natural world. As a result, the indooroutdoor living trend – a seamless blending of indoor and outdoor living spaces – continues to increase in popularity. Horngren foresees home owners utilising balconies and roof gardens as recreational spaces, with innovative screening and shading materials playing a large role in the exterior appearance of homes. Interior spaces, says Hofmeyr, continue to be inspired by nature with minimalistic décor schemes in calm, earthy tones. Smart innovation 3 Blurring the lines between technology and design, home tech, within the realm of residential design, will serve both functional and aesthetic requirements. Bothma anticipates the seamless integration of audio-visual appliances into interior design, becoming full panel walls, thereby creating the option of videographic art that can change according to your mood and needs.

ome automation systems may seem costly – but there are a number of costeffective systems on the market that do the basics well. It’s also possible to create something approaching the effect of a home automation system using a set of connected devices. But does that give you bang for your buck?

OF THINGS COST-EFFECTIVE CONNECTED HOME Mobile in Africa distributes an array of Xiaomi connected products, which can be centralised with its Smart Hub or controlled via its Mi Home app. Some of the devices that can be connected to almost mimic aspects of a home automation system include the Mi 360° Home Security Camera 2K Pro, the Mi Motion Sensor (which can detect movement and sound an alarm), Mi Wireless Switch (to control household appliances), Mi Smart Air Fryer and Mi Window and Door Sensor. “Our Mi Smart Hub allows all your connected smart devices to be controlled from a common touchpoint,” says Sashan Lalbiharry, Mobile in Africa e-commerce manager. “The Smart Hub acts as a central location for the management of your smart devices, providing total control of all connected devices.” Installing fully automated home and security systems can cost you thousands, he says – and in most cases require professionals or very tech-savvy individuals to install and set up. “In many cases your home may need to be fully rewired or require some sort of additional wiring,” says Lalbiharry. Elan Systems sales and product manager Ian le Grange says the company’s systems can communicate with certain internet of things (IoT) devices to form a network of smart devices, in addition to the hi-tech functions offered by the automation system. “You can connect devices that communicate via Z-Wave to the system – we have lighting control products from Aon Labs that you can connect to lamps and things to allow you to operate them remotely, and others that can be built into an IoT organism that monitors water leaks, senses doors and windows being opened and monitors light and humidity levels,” he says. That said, Le Grange says a well-designed automation system should disappear into the background and monitor and control all these aspects as an integration. “IoT devices are a complementary set of components – an extension of the organism – but they still need to integrate seamlessly, otherwise you’re just juggling more applications,” he says.

CHOOSE WISELY

across an unfamiliar brand, it will be worth your while to look for reviews in reputable publications. Real home automation doesn’t necessarily mean that when you retrofit a house it needs to be rewired. “There are lots of affordable, well-secured, and licensed wireless products available that can protect your space if it is planned, set up and configured correctly. “My advice is if you do not have the necessary home automation experience, rather approach a good, qualified systems integrator (CEDIA-accredited) for help instead of putting yourself at risk. Cybercrime is a reality and it can happen in your home,” he adds. Q With thanks to Cinema Architects, Elan Systems and Mobile in Africa

Cinema Architects’ Schalk Burger cautions against unlicensed (uncertified) products, mostly sold via the internet, that don’t necessarily have any level of security and are a big risk in and around your home, creating loopholes for potential hackers. “Thus, when you are shopping for devices, make sure they have good security features. Some applications (apps) collect data from the way you use them without your knowledge. You can deny them certain permissions if you turn off features, for example, Bluetooth connectivity and location data.” The biggest advantage of home automation is that it enables devices to interact with each other in your home or remotely over long distances via the internet. “But this can also be used to work against your cybersecurity,” he warns. To further minimise your risk, it is advisable to de-link redundant or broken devices from the rest of the system before you remove it, he says. This will avoid hackers using it as a backdoor into your system in the future. You also need to remove all the smart home applications from your old smartphone when you get a new one to avoid a similar situation. If you stay with the major certified brands, you will not be at risk. If you come

loor-to-ceiling glass is what everyone wants right now. Taller, wider windows are what people desire as they’ve become a doable option, seeing as windows have come a long way with insulation and energy efficiency. Black frames or “dark windows” came about a few years ago, and they’re still popular. This look dates back to the industrial warehouses of yesteryear, however, people still love the aesthetic. If you are looking for something charming and unique, window seats are a way to maximise your living experience, and add extra seating options. This is a great area to relax, enjoy a sundowner, read or unwind, while enjoying the view. These areas can be tastefully decorated with pillows and throws to make this a comfy and cosy experience.

Inside, frosted glass doors are still really trendy, providing a sense of intrigue as well as being highly elegant and functional. Sliding glass doors are now often being used instead of walls. They heighten the sense of space and create a seamless flow to the outdoor areas. Something to look out for too is hidden or invisible doors. These are decorated in the same colour, material and style of the wall where they’re positioned. These are often in flashy, bright colours such as mint green.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS When visitors arrive at your door, that door paves the way for what is hiding behind it. Your front door needs to make an impression, and speaks volumes about the character, personality and taste of the occupants inside. This season, home owners are opting for higher, wider and bolder than ever before when it comes to the latest door trends. A solid timber door is always popular, as it blends in well with your natural surroundings. Combining iron, steel and aluminium is also an option, serving as a preview for these elements used in the interior.

Handles, shutters, and security options mustn’t be forgotten when choosing windows and doors for your property. “Black handles have a high impact and are a bold statement on white or light timber doors or cabinetry, complementing the texture and grain of any carpentry. Black is confident, elegant and sleek and adds a new and refreshing finish to your doors. Door handles are the most touched object in your home, therefore are very noticed,” says Rene Van Heesch at Handles R Us. With security top of mind, Plantation Shutters combines safety, practicality and decoration. “Even though our Plantation Security Shutters are extremely sought after, Plantation Timber Shutters remain our flagship product,” says Briggie Kirchmann. “Plantation Timber Shutters are suitable for internal use, as window or door coverings (instead of curtains or blinds). They are also very popular as internal dividers.”

Lindy Barry of Trellidor explains the trend towards industrial design and brighter spaces. There’s been a move towards lighter, brighter rooms that allow more natural light in through bigger windows. Mixed materials are very appealing to the soul – steel, aluminium, glass, wood, naked brick. Not to mention the safety aspects of our home – and this is where “all these options need to be secured with products that don’t impinge on the view of the outside”, she says. Smart homes and sustainability are also considered high on the must-have list. Kate Mederer from Taylor Blinds & Shutters explains: “Today, with systems like Taylor’s MOTION Technology, your window or door blinds can be controlled at the touch of a remote, at the command of your voice or even automated to open and close at specific times in the day, offering you the simplicity of modern convenience.” We are all desperately trying to save the planet, so “blind fabric textiles are evolving to offer sustainable and tactile materials and include recycled fabrics, refined textures and more sustainable production processes”, Mederer adds. The festive season in South Africa is hot, promising lazy drinks by the pool; and when the heat gets too much, the allure of a cool bite to eat indoors. To make this as pleasant as possible, an efficient aircon or fan is vital. People are looking at these factors when buying a cooling system. “The speed of cooling and heating, energy saving, low noise, temperature control, warranty and maintenance plans and remote temperature control (connected home) are trending,” says Pearl Ndlazi from Samsung. Many consumers may feel that ceiling fans are out of date, but for energy efficiency and a gentle breeze on your skin, they may be a great option. What’s more, ceiling fans don’t have to be an eyesore. They’ve come a long way in design and creativity, blending in seamlessly with the style of the home. “Long gone are the days of bulky and unattractive ceiling fans. Now you can be lavished with sleek, shapely and super stylish fans that will leave your guests drooling. And ceiling fans are not just a pretty ceiling ornament, they are environmentally friendly too,” says Leona Pillay of Solent. What’s more, “you get to choose the motor, blade, colour, style, size and finish so that you can have a fan that is 100% you,” says Pillay. For die-hard aircon fans, there are a number of elegant and discreet options this summer. However, as energy efficiency is always a high priority, Crispin Cheadle from Advantage Air shares the latest trends in aircon control: “Adding zone control to a central unit means you can switch off the rooms that aren’t

being used, and the unit’s running costs will drop as less energy is required to cool fewer rooms. Motion sensors mean that the aircon won’t supply the rooms that don’t have anyone inside them.”

FIRE AWAY In no time at all, we will be switching off the cooling systems and sparking up the fire and gas systems. But what’s best – fire or gas? Malcolm Sims from Infiniti Fires sheds some light on this debate. “The SA market is split fairly evenly between home owners buying a flueless gas fire and those buying a closed combustion wood stove. Flueless gas fires are easy to light and can heat large areas quite comfortably. However, as the price of gas is about the same as electricity, these fires are more expensive to run than wood stoves. “Wood stoves require lighting and the occasional cleaning of ash, but provide a brilliant flame effect and huge amounts of heat, and have a low running cost. Typically, if you buy wood in bulk, these fires provide heat at under a quarter of the price of electrical or gas heating.” Christian Faitsch of Faitsch Products swears by the BRUNNER kit system fireplace. “It can be set up in just a few hours thanks to its precisely formed heat-storing concrete components. This is convenience at its peak, without having to forego individual design possibilities,” Faitsch explains. Q With thanks to Advantage Air, Faitsch Products, Infiniti Fires, Samsung and Solent

S

tairs complemented by the right balustrades play an integral part in the interior design of your home – not only for access between levels, but also to elevate the look. When beautifully designed, these can make a bold statement. Here’s what our experts say:

KNOCK ON WOOD When it comes to wooden stairs, Hanél Appleby from Lalegno SA says solid oak remains popular. In particular she notes that “floating staircases with solid oak box stairs and LED strips for the more high-end projects” are popular.

STYLE WATCH Other trends we are seeing include spiral staircases for smaller spaces or L-shaped staircases. Michelle Smuts from Peter’s Metals says “simplistic, straight lines and horizontal designs in black are very popular at the moment”. “We are seeing a lot of monochrome and grey colour tones being used, whether it be a contrast between a black and white marble or a white marble with black veining. These colours are easy to accessorise and play with,” says Kate Caner of Artmar Natural Stone.

HEART OF STONE “Marble staircases are always a popular and timeless trend with so many ways to lay this beautiful natural stone, each way creating a different flow and look,” says Caner. For example, “laying it in such a way that your marble veins run downwards from one stair to another, creating a sense of movement and flow to your stairs”.

EXPERT ADVICE “If you are making a feature out of your staircase by using a marble with a lot of movement in it, allow it to be the hero of the room and keep the rest of the room fairly simplistic so as not to overdo it. It is all about balance.” – Kate Caner, Artmar Natural Stone

You can opt for modern moulding techniques to create a sense of movement and flow to your stairs. Add a contemporary note to this classic material by using a sweeping shape and gently curved edges. Choose a very pale or super dark stone for maximum drama, says Caner.

For a modern look, Smuts suggests “16mm square bar multiple uprights … complemented by steelfinished handrails in wrought iron”, and a flat bar can also be used to “ensure continuity when it joins the staircase which forms part of the balustrading and the outline of the boundaries”. Whatever your taste, Smuts points out that “when a home has staircases, terraces and balconies or even when there is a differentiation between the various relevant areas in a home, it should be accompanied by suitable balustrades that provide safety as well as decorative and aesthetic value”. WISE WORDS “Attention should be given to selecting the right height for balustrading, and the decorative art in the balustrading should be complementary to the furniture in the home or garden. he pandemic has made us realise what is important in our lives. More than ever, we are looking for solutions that bring comfort, flexibility and a deeper connection to nature. This has changed how we treat our outdoor living spaces.

GOING EVEN GREENER “There is a move towards using sustainable building materials like Bamboo Composite Decking for pool decks and fire pit bomas as well as Bamboo Composite Slatted Wall Cladding for adding interesting detail on feature walls and ceilings,” explains Pierre Joubert from Bamboo Warehouse. We are also seeing composite materials being used for pergola and screening solutions. “With little to no maintenance, this suits the modern individual due to their fast-paced lifestyles. No oiling is required with wood plastic composite, it deals with our climate superbly,” says Nigel Potgieter from Deck-it. Glenn Varrie from Summer Place Spas and Baths and NewTechWood Africa explains that the rise in composite

decking options is due to technological advancements and the green credentials of these products. This has resulted in a move from a timber dominated space to greater use of composite alternatives. “Composite decking and cladding products are manufactured from sawmill waste as well as recycled plastic. The massive improvements to the technology in this space has allowed manufacturers to offer lengthy warranty terms where natural timber products don’t carry any warranty,” adds Glenn.

WHAT’S COOKING As we spend more time entertaining at home, many of us are looking for beautiful, unique products that are stylish and easy to use to make spending time with friends and family even more special. It allows you to make just about any dish, from crispy pizzas to lamb chops and prawns.

LOCAL IS LEKKER

Macalli Outdoor Furniture

“Another trend we have noticed is that more home owners and hospitality companies are increasingly conscious of buying local products.” – Megan Rankin, Macalli Outdoor Furniture.

FURNITURE Nothing beats a comfortable sofa set for your patio that creates a second living area for the family, teens or general entertaining. When it comes to furniture, clean comfortable lines with natural tones that create a seamless flow of bringing the outdoors in are in vogue. Hot right now are “finishes that are durable and comfortable and sourced locally in warm, monochromatic natural colours. Mixing aluminium with timber gives you the ideal mix of natural durability,” adds Megan Rankin, marketing manager of Macalli Outdoor Furniture.

CONSIDER THE ELEMENTS Outdoor fabric should be UV-resistant and have mildew, water, oil and soil repellent qualities. Use hardwood timber and a powder-coated aluminium frame to avoid any rust. Choose furniture that suits your lifestyle and your style; there are many beautiful products available. – Megan Rankin, Macalli Outdoor Furniture.

“Water restrictions have contributed to a rise in the change from natural grass and plants to artificial grass and plants.” –

POOL COVERS A beautifully covered pool in a tranquil garden really adds value to one’s life in many ways. “In terms of pool design, simple smaller pools with pool covers are the trend. Covers are installed either for child and pet safety or because the home owner is conscious of the environment and understands that a pool can be more sustainable with very little effort,” explains Caryn Formby of PowerPlastics Pool Covers.

According to Braam Du Plessis, managing director of Pool Cover Pro, automatic safety pool covers are on-trend. These include automatic slatted pool covers and automatic vinyl pool covers. “The automated slatted covers for pools are specifically designed to reduce maintenance costs up to 60% for both outdoor and indoor swimming pools,” explains du Plessis. Automatic pool covers have various options to choose from including wall-mounted keypads or switches and remote control operated and home automation. Q

EXPERT ADVICE “One needs to plan carefully when including a fire pit into a composite deck due to the plastic component in the decking material. A concrete or paved apron around the fire pit normally solves the problem.” – Glenn Varrie, Summer Place Spas and Baths and NewTechWood Africa.

END NOTE

CONSCIOUS collection

Bilala Mabuza, founder and creative director of Cocoon Lifestyle, gives insight into home interior design trends

I

think South African interior décor has evolved from trying too hard to “decorate” homes and fill them up with countless items of furniture and accessories. My approach to interior design and décor is effortless elegance for the collected home. Personally, I’m drawn to interiors that celebrate the open living between inside and outside, and South Africa has the most glorious weather that allows for this kind of existence.

My work celebrates “the collected home”. Our clients are collectors of art, lighting or furniture, and we work closely with them to create homes where their collections can be celebrated, while functionally their homes are also comfortable and practical.

Conscious collection: I believe that in 2022 creatives and designers will continue to freely experiment with furniture, lighting, ceramic and accessory design, allowing for interesting sculptural pieces to be infused into what home owners have already collected over time. This conscious collection will see buying patterns that are a lot more thoughtful, and possibly coming home with one incredibly designed chair or sculptural lighting piece with interesting form and material combination to add to the collection. I see homes as fluid galleries that showcase home owners’ true personalities and interests.

I believe there is a designer or decorator for every type of client. When looking for an interior designer or decorator, you should shortlist the people you most resonate with, either because of their style or their energy. Interview different designers and choose to work with someone you are instinctively drawn to and believe better understands your brief and what you are trying to achieve with your space. Projects often take a long time to complete, so it helps if the relationship is pleasant and bearable on both sides.
