As diplomats we have the privilege to live more than one life.

It’s reality, not megalomania. Not all that glitters is gold, though.

It’s exciting, but also tiring (and sometimes can prove even distressing, especially for our families.) Passion and curiosity are the right tools to navigate this multifaceted life. If you are curi-

ous, all countries you serve in will turn out to be intriguing and reveal aspects that you hadn’t expected. In each and every one of them you will leave a piece of your heart. Believe me, this is not a diplomatic response. Then, if you force me to single out one mission, and if you measure interest by the yardstick of diversity and cultural challenge, I would consider China the most fascinating and challenging experience for me and my family.

What did you find the most challenging aspect of your position?

If you refer, in general, to the Ambassador’s job, success lies in the capacity to strike a balance between the big picture and the attention for details. You have to identify all the sectors that can better advance the image and the role of your homeland and its relationship with your hosting country. And you go down those paths with tenacity and pragmatism. At the same time, you never lose the big picture and the balance between all the components of the relationship you are expected to develop in a significant and harmonious way.

You’ve had a pretty exciting four years in Georgia, what does these years meant for you and how did you feel yourself in this country?

I felt at home. The piece of heart I leave in Georgia is actually a very big chunk…

What did you miss the most from Italy and what do you think you will miss the most from Georgian culture?

About Italy? I missed my childhood friends, the baroque churches, the pines of Rome, eating spaghetti with clams on the seashore or riding a scooter staring – each evening with the same emotion – at the sunset on the Roman Forum. About Georgia? My family and I will miss it very much. We will miss all our new friends, the incredible hospitality, warmth and dignity of the Georgian people, the amazing beauty of your mountains. Not to mention khachapuri…

Many people compare Georgians with Italians, do you see any similarities between these two nations?

I do. Let me try to point out some of the many features we

ისტორია; ბუნებრივი ელეგანტურობა და შემოქმედებითობა; უნარი, ვიპოვოთ გამოსავალი, ბოლო წუთსაც კი; ცხოვრებით ტკბობა. თქვენ იმოგზაურეთ საქართველოში? რომლებია თქვენი საყვარელი ადგილები აქ და არის თუ არა ადგილი, რომელიც იტალიას გახსენებთ? ზურაბ ჟვანიას სიტყვიდან ციტატას მოვიყვან: ,,მე მიყვარს მთები, ამიტომ მე მიყვარს საქართველო.“ ჩემი საყვარელი რეგიონი სვანეთია - სავსე თვალწარმტაცი პეიზაჟებითა და უნიკალური კულტურული ძვირფასეულობით სავსე საუნჯე, მესტიის კოშკებიდან (ძალიან ჰგავს სან ჟემენიანოს კოშკს ტოსკანაში) სოფელ უშგულამდე, ძვირფასი საეკლესიო ფრესკებიდან დაწყებული, უძველესი ხატებით დამთავრებული. მეზობელი რაჭაც მომხიბლავია და ტურისტული პოტენციალი აქვს (ქუთაისის აეროპორტის სიახლოვის წყალობითაც). კავკასიონის მწვერვალები ისეთივე საუცხოოა, როგორიც ჩვენი ალპები. გაოგნებული ვიყავი ხევსურეთისა და თუშეთის სილამაზით, რომელსაც დრო ვერაფერს აკლებს, ყაზბეგის მთის ხედით, ლაგოდეხის მდიდრული მცენარეულობით, ხედით გომბორის უღელტეხილიდან ან ნეკრესის მონასტრიდან, მიტოვებული საბჭოთა სანატორიუმების მომხიბლავი არქიტექტურით წყალტუბოში, ახალციხის ველური რეგიონით, კლდეში ნაკვეთ ჯადოსნურ ქალაქ ვარძიით (მახსენდება სასი დი მატერა იტალიის ბაზილიკატას რეგიონიდან). როგორ აფასებთ საქართველოსა და იტალიის ურთიერთობებს და როგორ ფიქრობთ, როგორ შეიძლება მისი გაძლიერება? ჩვენს ურთიერთობებს აქვს ათასწლეულის ისტორია: რომაელები, ვაჭრები (მარკო პოლოს ჩათვლით), მისიონერები, იტალიელი მოგზაური ვიტორიო სელა, რომელიც სვანეთში იმყოფებოდა XIX საუკუნის ბოლოს, პარტიზანები, რომლებიც ერთად იბრძოდნენ თავისუფლებისთვის, იტალიელი ოჯახების მიერ ნაჩვენები სოლიდარობა აფხაზეთის ომის შემდეგ დევნილი ბავშვებისთვის მრავალი წლის განმავლობაში და ა.შ. პოლიტიკური, ეკონომიკური, კულტურული და სამეცნიერო ურთიერთობები მუდმივად ფართოვდება. ჩვენს მეგობრობას ღრმა ფესვები აქვს წარსულში და პერსპექტივა მომავალში. შარშან მოწმე გავხდით იტალიის რესპუბლიკის პრეზიდენტის ისტორიული ვიზიტისა თბილისში. ბოლო დროს განხორციელებული მრავალი სავაჭრო მისია აძლიერებს ეკონომიკურ კავშირებს. ჩვენმა საელჩომ იტალიურსა და ქართულ ინსტიტუტებთან ერთად ხელი შეუწყო უპრეცედენტო კულტურულ ღონისძიებებს (150 ათასი ვიზიტორი მხოლოდ ექსპონატებისთვის). მნიშვნელოვანი პროექტები მეცნიერებასთან, ტექნოლოგიასთან, ინოვაციებთან, თანამედროვე ხელოვნებასთან, ჯანმრთელობასთან, გარემოსთან, უსაფრთხოებასთან, სოფლის მეურნეობასთან და ბევრ სხვა სექტორთან დაკავშირებით ხელს უწყობს და გააღრმავებს ჩვენს ურთიერთობას ყველა მიმართულებით. რას ფიქრობთ საქართველოს დემოკრატიულ განვითარებაზე? გაუმჯობესდა თუ გაუარესდა თქვენი აქ ჩამოსვლის შემდეგ და როგორია თქვენი შემოთავაზებები? ევროპული და ევროატლანტიკური ინტეგრაციის მიმართ ვალდებულება კარგად არის გამჯდარი ხალხის განწყობებში. კონსტიტუციის რეფორმა წავიდა სწორი მიმართულებით (საპარლამენტო და პროპორციული სისტემა). რეფორმები უნდა გაგრძელდეს და კიდევ უფრო კონკრეტული შედეგი გამოიღოს ინსტიტუციების სოლიდარობისა და პატივისცემის, პოლიტიკური და მედია პლურალიზმის, სასამართლო ხელისუფლებისა და საჯარო ადმინისტრაციის სანდოობის, ინკლუზიური ზრდის თვალსაზრისით. ეს ქვეყანა მნიშვნელოვანია თავისი გეოპოლიტიკურად სტრატეგიული პოზიციისა და მისი დემოკრატიულობის გამო. დემოკრატია არის ძირითადი აქტივი, რომელიც არასოდეს უნდა მივიღოთ ისე, თითქოს შეუქცევადია. საქართველოს აქვს (და იმსახურებს) კაშკაშა მომავალი და შეუძლია ბევრ მეგობარს დაეყრდნოს. იტალია ერთ-ერთი მათგანია და ყოველთვის ასე იქნება.

You have traveled around Georgia? What are you favorite places here and is there any place that reminds you of Italy?

To paraphrase Zurab Zhvania: I love mountains, therefore I love Georgia. My favorite region is Svaneti. A treasure chest full of breathtaking landscapes and unique cultural gems, from the towers of Mestia (very similar to San Gimignano’s skyline, in Tuscany) to the village of Ushguli, from the precious church frescos to the ancient icons. Neighbouring Racha is fascinating, too.

And has a lot of tourism potential (also thanks to the proximity of Kutaisi airport). The Caucasus peaks are as majestic as those of our Alps. I was stunned by the timeless beauty of Khevsureti and Tusheti, the profile of Kazbegi mountain, the luxuriant vegetation of Lagodekhi, the view from Gombori pass or Nekresi monastery, the fascinating architecture of the abandoned soviet sanatoriums in Tskaltubo, the wilderness of the Akhaltsikhe region, the magic of the cave town of Vardzia (reminding me of Matera’s Sassi in the Italian region of Basilicata).

How do you assess the relations between Georgia and Italy and how do you think it can be strengthened?

Our relationship has a millennial history: the Romans, the merchants (Marco Polo included), the missionaries, the Italian explorer Vittorio Sella visiting Svaneti at the end of the XIX century, the partisans fighting together for freedom, the solidarity shown by Italian families hosting IDP kids for many years after the war in Abkhazia, etc. Political, economic, cultural and scientific relations are constantly expanding. Our friendship is deeply rooted in the past, but projected into the future. Last year saw the historic visit to Tbilisi of the President of the Italian Republic.

Many business missions are strengthening economic ties. Our embassy, together with Italian and Georgian institutions, has promoted unprecedented cultural events (150 thousand visitors only for the exhibits). Important projects regarding science, technology, innovation, contemporary art, health, environment, security, agriculture and many other sectors are advancing and deepening our relationship in all directions.

What do you think about democratic developments in Georgia? Is it getting better or worse since you arrived here and what would be your suggestions?

The commitment toward European and Euroatlantic integration is well rooted in people’s sentiments. The reform of the Constitution went in the right direction (parliamentary and proportional system). The commendable efforts for reforms must continue and produce ever more concrete results, in terms of solidity of and respect for institutions, political and media pluralism, reliability of the judiciary and of the public administration, and inclusive growth.

This country is important for its strategic geopolitical position and for its democracy. Democracy is a key asset that should never be taken for granted. Georgia has (and deserves) a bright future and can count on many friends. Italy is - and will always remain - one of them.

he nation of Italy shares many common grounds with Georgia and is home to many Georgian immigrants. Many Georgians took Italy as home due to the friendship expressed by Italians in troubled times.

In this interview with Mr. Konstantine Surguladze, Ambassador of Georgia to Italy, he stressed on the growth and strengths among both countries necessitated by the collaboration among their citizens to deepen business, tourism and other bilateral relations.

Your appointment as the Ambassador of Georgia to Italy is nearing it’s first year, how would you describe the months you’ve spent in this position?

You are absolutely correct. In a few months from now, my appointment as Ambassador of Georgia to Italy will reach it’s first year mark.

The period since assuming the position has been very busy both in terms of work and for me personally and emotionally. Although I have been to Italy many times before my appointment, an entirely different reality sets in when you start living in the country. At the time of my arrival, Italy was the chair of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), so at the very first stage of my appointment, the OSCE Ministerial council was the largest political event of its kind. During these few months, I made several regional visits, the first of which took place in the Puglia region, where most Georgians live and work.

My next regional visit was to Sicily, which is also a very important region for us, because of the special friendship and closeness it shares with Georgia. This special friendship is due to the many years of support that families in this region have shown to children displaced first by the horrific events in Abkhazia and the 2008 war.

I very much appreciated the warm gesture as I am sure Georgia does too. The amazing actions I saw in Sicily are a practical demonstration of love.

As a result, hundreds of Georgian children, through the “memories of the Sicilians,” have found the hardest days of their lives easier and clearer. Many of them are still in close contact with these families, and naturally, I wanted to personally express the great gratitude the Georgian people have to them.

I also recently visited the Lombardy region, where I met with the President of Lombardy and other government officials. Lombardy, as you know, is one of the richest and economically powerful regions of Italy, so a deepening of economic and trade relations was the focus of the meeting. Specific steps have already been taken during these visits, and I hope that they will yield tangible results soon.

What is the main objective that you would like to achieve during your mission?

I would be happy to see more Italians becoming familiar and endeared to my homeland at the expiration of my mandate. For most Italians, Georgia will be a country known for Rustaveli, Pirosmani, unique alphabet, amazing wine, centuries-old history and traditions.

My main task, of course, is to strengthen political relations, to further deepen and consolidate bilateral relations in various sectors.

How do you generally evaluate Italy-Georgia relations and where do you see the prospect of deepening these relations?

Italy-Georgia relations are dynamic and friendly. The dynamics surrounding the relationship has grown especially in recent years, especially in the area of supporting Georgia’s European aspirations where Italy moved from the group of “neutral” countries to the group of “supporting countries”. This has been well demonstrated, even with the ratification of the EU Association Agreement with Georgia by both chambers of the Italian Parliament in an unprecedentedly short time for Italian practice. gime within the Schengen zone. This positive outlook has also been demonstrated by several high-level bilateral visits (since Georgia’s independence, the Italian Republic President Sergio Matarela, visited Georgia officially in 2018), large-scale business-forums organized, both in Italy and Georgia.

Italy has been a staunch supporter of Georgia in its policy of non-recognition of Georgia’s occupied regions. This is reflected in the statements of the authorities, as well as in the support of resolutions, recommendations of the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the OSCE, the European Union and other important documents concerning Georgia. Italy finances the European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) monitors whose presence on the occupation line is very important for Georgia.

There are also positive dynamics in the area of economic and cultural relations and in other areas, but there is clearly a potential for further intensification of these growing dynamics.

We are also actively working with each region of Italy, according to their specifics, to raise awareness of Georgia and deepen interest in economic, political, cultural and educational areas.

It is of utmost importance that we make the positive dynamics of these bilateral relations stable, irreversible and not dependent on various foreign or domestic political and economic challenges.

To do this, Georgia needs to be a reliable partner in Italy’s stateowned political and economic projects. For example, TANAP and TAP (Trans-Anatolian and Trans-Adriatic Natural Gas Pipelines) projects, diversified transit roads, ports, pipelines, etc., are important to create, develop, and strengthen bilateral trade and to make full use of the potential in this area. Cooperation in these areas requires constant and intensive efforts, on which we work productively.

How much do Italians know about Georgia and what kind of activities are lined up to promote Georgia?

Many Italians know Georgia, many are in fact, getting to know and loving Georgia more. This is also largely merited to those Georgian immigrants who try to introduce their country’s culture and traditions daily. During my stay here we have organized several cultural events. The biggest scale event was during the days we organized about the Georgian cinema, in Rome’s most important cinema area - the Cinema House, located in the historic center of Rome, in Villa Borghese. In addition to classic Georgian films, we also presented contemporary films at the festival. It was especially interesting on the closing day of the festival, where we presented Kote Mikaberidze’s genius silent movie “My Grandmother”, with live accompaniment by Rezo Kiknadze’s trio. With our patronage, an exhibition of David Luashvili’s icons was held, as well as a meeting with the poet Giorgi Lobzhanidze, in Rome. In Perugia, with our patronage was held a concert by the Ensemble Basiani, which was a huge success. It was also important for us to organize a presentation of the Georgian historian and scholar, prof. Gaga Shurgaia’s book, Vakhtang Gorgasali – King of Karli, at the Italian National Library. The event was well attended by many prominent persons in academic circles. Together with the Sommelier Society of Rome and the Georgian Wine Agency, we held tasting of Qvevri wines and this was attended by about 100 professional Sommeliers and wine journalists. Alongside our culture, wine is also our calling card and

With the help of the Ministry of Agriculture in the town of Velletri, near Rome, Georgia was the host country at one of the prestigious wine festivals “Everyone Down in the Cellar”, and we had our special stand where we were able to introduce our guests to the tourist opportunities besides wine. An important event is also planned in November, within the framework of the Sacramento 2019 festival, which is dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the L’Aquila earthquake. Our opera orchestra and baritone singer Giorgi Andghuladze will take part in it. We also plan on presenting an Italian language translation of Giorgi Kekelidze’s ”Thoma’s Tales” at the Rome Literature House. We are all very happy and looking forward to the December tour of the Sukhishvili ensebmble in various Italian cities.

Sometimes, when due to our scarce budget, we cannot financially organize or support some of them, we always try to get involved in organizational matters and still make a contribution. We want to organize a large-scale cultural event in Palermo to express our gratitude for that great and noble friendship. This idea is still being developed, but we will try our best to make it a reality.

The number of direct flights between Italy and Georgia has increased, how will this contribute to the attraction of more tourists from Italy under these conditions?

We are very excited by the recent increase of the number of direct flights between Italy and Georgia. In addition to Bologna-Tbilisi, which is operated by Airzena, Wizzair operates Milan-Kutaisi, Rome-Kutaisi and Bari-Kutaisi flights. Ryanair has also added flights from Bergamo-Tbilisi, Kutaisi-Bologna. A few more flights are being planned. It is of course very important to attract more Italian tourists to visit Georgia. We actively cooperate with the Georgian Tourism Agency, especially in organizing press tours and conducting information visits to individual journalists who write about Georgia in leading publications. In addition to the Tourism Agency, the Embassy has organized a number of presentation events for tour operators and journalists working in the field.

How do you evaluate business relationships? Are there any interest expressed among Georgian businessmen willing to enter the Italian market, and how do you raise interest among Italian companies to invest in Georgia? Please tell us some

As you know, the economic relations between Georgia and the EU countries became especially intense after the signing of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DACFTA) Agreement with the EU. The agreement allowed Georgian companies to enter the EU market to produce their own products in one or another country.

Of course, this also applies to Italy, with which Georgia has a long and fruitful relationship. As you know, many large Italian companies operate in Georgia and their field of activity is quite diverse. Will it be agriculture, infrastructure, construction, etc.? Not to mention, the world’s famous Ferrero company, which uses Georgian nuts for its products and is one of the largest agricultural investors in Georgia.

Also, in terms of infrastructure projects, we have to mention one of the largest Italian company Salini Impregilo, which currently constructs the Nenskra hydroelectric power station and so on.

It should be noted that many Georgian companies successfully cooperate with Italian companies. Georgian businessmen often arrive in Italy for business visits. I would like to emphasize that in the Italian city of Bari, which is home to many of our compatriots in Italy, we have Georgian wine shop “Khareba” and as we know, Georgian wines are enjoyed here by both Georgians and Italians with great pleasure.

We are obviously working towards intensifying business relations between Georgia and Italy. We hold meetings with various Chambers of Commerce and Industry in various regions of Italy to discuss Georgia’s investment environment, tourism potential, business relationships, foreign trade, Georgia’s international ranking, tax system and other important topics. I would also like to note that in 2017, Italy hosted a Georgian-Italian business forum with over 200 businessmen from both countries participating. In 2019, Tbilisi hosted the same forum.

Lastly, as a former Minister of Diaspora, I would like to ask you about Georgians in Italy, what the Georgian Diaspora is like and what message do you want to send to them. It is also worth noting that prior to Italy you were Georgia’s ambassador to the Netherlands where the problem of illegal Georgian migrants is not as severe as in Italy, how do you rate this problem?

Naturally, there are more Georgians in Italy and you are right, there are more irregular citizens than in the Netherlands. This is, of course, the result of the differing specificities and immigration policies of these countries. There are also different traditions and beliefs that the Italians and Dutch have. Georgians, by their nature and temperament, find much common ground with the Italians, and therefore adapt more easily here. Not to mention those specific immigration regulations that result in a very small number of irregular migrants in the Netherlands. In Italy, these approaches are much more tolerant, and therefore it reflects on numbers. Unfortunately, living illegally in a foreign country has many problems. It is important for immigrants to have comprehensive information on different types of services and procedures, or simply on the rights they need at the first or next stage of life abroad, to avoid risks. Compared to the Netherlands, Italy is also bigger in territorial size, with citizens often having difficulty arriving in Rome to obtain consular services from other Italian cities.

Unfortunately, they often have the false information that if they do not have legal status they will not get services in the consulate and they turn to private Georgian associations for help. Unfortunately, some of them abuse and often mislead these citizens.

I would like to tell every citizen of Georgia who is in Italy that the door of the Georgian Embassy and Consulate is open to all Georgian citizens, regardless of whether they are legally resident in Italy or not. Consular services are provided equally to all Georgian citizens, regardless of their status. Moreover, our consular staff often makes field trips to different cities to serve citizens so that they can avoid the long trips, additional costs and day offs. I am very glad, and I want to let them know that soon in Bari, where the Georgian Diaspora is concentrated most, a consulate office will be opened that will serve Georgians living in southern Italy to ease their current difficult situation. The role of the diaspora in the socio-economic development of the country is most significant. The role of the Georgian diaspora in public diplomacy is also invaluable. Georgians abroad, through their work, contribute not only to the development of their host countries, but also contribute to the promotion of Georgia abroad and its positive image. Consequently, successful Georgians with high professionalism, wide scale and prominence abroad share a positive image of the country abroad. Italy is a country that I share an important life connection with – I experienced immense success in my footballing career and in my personal life (I met my wife in Milan) in Italy. Milan is my second home because all my success in football is tied to an illustrious club in the city.

How do you remember the years you spent working and living in Italy?

I said earlier in other interviews that nothing came easy in my life, and that includes moving to Associazione Calcio Milan (A.C. Milan). I have come a long way in life, but through hard work and willpower, I have been able to do everything. You will only turn out a soccer star if you have a strong character. Difficulties help a person to achieve growth so, you have to give up many things. Of course, even in Italy, there were many difficulties that I had to overcome to gain victory.

What is the current connection you share with Italy?

As I have earlier mentioned, Italy is my second homeland and obviously I have a great love for it; I remain connected to my friends in Italy with whom I share all of my success, joy, and pain. I have very precious memories of Italy.

Which are your favorite places in Italy and how often do you visit the country?

Of course, Milan - it’s a city of fashion, design, sports and at the same time, a city of science and universities. Milan is a city of contrasts, where you are fascinated by antiquity and modernity. My work schedule is quite tight so, I often cannot allow myself to visit Italy, although I visit at least twice a year.

Which Italian city do you consider similar to Tbilisi and why?

However, it is still hard to draw a parallel, as Tbilisi is an ancient city whose original look and feel has been retained over time. Our goal too, is to preserve the architecture and style that characterizes Tbilisi as a unique city on its own.

Do you have a desire or have you attempted to replicate a specific Italian practice or experience in Tbilisi? Or do you have anything in the works?

Of course, there are many things we can take a cue from the example of Italy. We can learn from Italy in the areas of urban planning, public transport development, greenery, ecology, bicycle transport, electric cars, etc.

How would you rate Italy-Georgia relations and where do you see prospects for developing these relations?

Georgia has established close partnership and relations with Italy. Our cooperation is in the areas of defense, economics, transportation, culture, education and more. Last year, the President of the Republic of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, paid his first historic visit to Tbilisi. Within the framework of his visit, Memorandums of Understanding on Health, Education and Culture were signed between Georgia and Italy. I am glad that these relations have become even closer lately. Georgians and Italians have a lot in common in terms of values, culture, traditions, and I think relationships can be developed in many ways.

The twin city of Tbilisi is Palermo, although the twinning happened quite early in 1987, do you plan on expanding the twinning area in this regard to Italian cities or with other countries.

Yes, Tbilisi has 19 twin cities and Palermo is among them.

Of course, we are eager to have more partner cities, including Italian cities. Our work in this direction is underway.

position and sixth overall in the World Bank “Ranking on the ease of doing business 2019” and the 16th place in the Heritage Foundation “Economic Freedom” indicator.

Tbilisi can rely on a powerful tool such as the DCFTA with the European Union and a network of free trade agreements with China, Turkey and the CIS countries. It aims at becoming a logistics platform and taking advantage of its geostrategic position.

These general and positive conditions are attractive, indeed. They are necessary but, of course, not sufficient.

Georgia has to reach out to the Italian business community (as to other EU partners) in a concrete and targeted way, focusing on specific sectors and products, and proposing ready to go projects. More trade has to be developed in order to attract also investments later. The Italian Embassy has acted as an effective bridge, contributing to fill the gap of information about Georgian opportunities and favoring directs encounters also through the organization of bilateral business fora and entrepreneurial missions.

In March 2017, for example, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation hosted the first full-

fledged business forum attended by some 400 delegates from Italy and Georgia. The Georgian delegation was led by the then Prime Minister, accompanied by several members of the government and the representatives of the main international financial institutions. On that occasion some priority sectors were identified and discussed: infrastructure, energy, tourism, manufacturing, agro-food, textile, machinery. As a concrete follow up, a select group of 30 major Italian companies visited Tbilisi in October 2017, led by the then Italian Deputy Minister for economic development.

As evidence of the strong ties on which the friendship between Italy and Georgia is based and to honor the Centenary of the First Georgian Republic, the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, conducted a historic state visit to Georgia in July 2018.

The program included, among others, meetings with the President of Georgia, the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the Parliament, the Patriarch and the Mayor of Tbilisi. On that occasion, bilateral agreements were signed in numerous fields, including: research and innovation, culture, defense and security, health, and education. A business forum was organized, with sectoral tables and B2B, and with a substantive Italian business delegation led by the Deputy Minister for Economic Development. of the two countries and of Italian and Georgian companies operating, above all, in the infrastructure, energy and agro-industry sectors. A specific session was also dedicated to education and research. In opening the Business Forum, President Mattarella highlighted the positive results achieved by Georgia, a reliable economic partner for Italy and Europe, located in a strategic position, a key corridor between two continents. The Italian Head of State added that both Georgia and Italy represent a real economic opportunity for each other. The need to invest in young people and to cooperate in the training sector was also underlined.

A new successful business forum was held on July 4 this year and brought three important Italian business associations and their members: ANCE (construction industry), OICE (architectural and engineering firms), ANIE (electrical engineering and electronic sector).

It is useful to mention some important stakeholders of the Italian economic system committed to fostering economic ties between the two countries: ITA-ICE, the Italian trade agency; SACE, export credit agency that already partnered with the Georgian Partnership Fund; Confindustria, the main association gathering more than 150,000 manufacturing and service companies, employing almost 5,5 million people. Furthermore, the presence of important Italian companies in some strategic sectors is also significant. This is the case of Ferrero, one of the biggest agrofood multinationals. The group has invested 100 million euros in Georgia and remains committed to developing a reliable network for hazelnut production, able to provide the required high quality standards. Ferrero is, therefore, an important driver of local economic development. Many

Italian companies are also present in the infrastructure sector (from the design and construction of roads or tourism facilities to the expansion of the gas pipeline, already implemented by Saipem). Some investors are also looking at the Georgian hydropower market. In the fashion, design sector, numerous Italian brands operate in Georgia, through franchising branches. We can mention, for example, Carpisa; Intimissimi; Calzedonia; Coincasa; Yamamay; Ermenegildo Zegna; OVS; Terranova; Ci Gusta; Old Wild West; Max Mara Weekend; Pensarecasa; and Geox.

Tourism also shows a positive dynamic. Due to the recent turmoil, Georgia is ever more looking at the European market to compensate probable losses from Russia. If we talk about Italian tourists coming to Georgia, an increase of 52% was recorded between 2016 and 2018. In the first two months of 2019 the figure showed a percentage increase of 27% over the same period of 2018 (from 1,227 to 1,556 entries). Italy is also a destination very demanded by Georgians. Especially after March 28th, 2017, when the agreement for the liberalization of Schengen visas for Georgian citizens came into force. According to data provided by the Enit Office (the Italian organism dealing with tourism promotion), Georgian tourism flows to Italy increased by 9% in 2018 compared to the previous year (from 13,580 to 14,800). Several direct flights (Tbilisi-Bologna with Georgian Airways; Wizzair connections from the Kutaisi hub with Rome, Milan and Bari, and shortly also with Naples, Pisa and Venice), and Ryanair flights from Tbilisi to Milan and from Kutaisi to Bologna are expected to contribute to a growth of tourism and business in both directions.

Overall, Italy has been - last year - Georgia’s 4th biggest trading partner in the EU, with a trade exchange that amounts to 274 million euros in 2018. The volume remains limited, of course, and further work is needed to fully exploit the potential of the bilateral economic partnership. But also GeoStat figures reveal, anyway, an encouraging trend in the interchange, increased by 154% over the last decade.

It’s a remarkable figure, testimony to the fact that there is interest and there are concrete opportunities.

It seems appropriate to conclude with the words pronounced by the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, addressing the Tbilisi State University audience: “Italy [...] will remain at the side of Georgia, to which it is linked by a long history of friendship. We can say, with good reason: a past with a great future “.

We started working with this high-end Italian fashion house two years ago and our partnership is going stronger and still successful.

The Hotel Ambassadori is represented in Tbilisi and Kachreti, both of which recently expanded. What are your plans? Are there plans to open a new hotel?

Actually, many Italians produce their products in France but while the French love to mix ingredients, the Italians focus on one particular ingredient. There is one such brand, Carthusia, which is made exclusively of citrus from the island of Capri. Carthusia is a limited brand and it is already represented in Lutecia.

Bureaucracy as such is less widespread in Italy, so products are produced sooner than in any other country.

Which Italian perfumes are particularly popular among Georgian consumers?

FERRAGAMO and Tiziana Terenzi are particularly in high demand in Georgia. Generally, when it comes to perfumes, Georgian consumers are quite sophisticated and knowledgeable. In fact, many brands that we have in Lutecia or elsewhere, e.g. Italian perfumes - Tiziana Terenzi, XERJOFF, Sospiro, Diego Dalla Palma, Laura Biagiotti, Sergio Tacchini, Ferrari were made available in Georgia as a result of the survey results, we gathered among Georgian customers which showed the exact yearnings of the market.

The uniqueness of each fragrance depends on the person.

What does the person like? What does he love? As a designer, it is important to note that the intricate desires of the person determine the fragrance, so the perfumer should understand the personality of the person and try to create the perfume he or she may like. It is highly likely to like the smell of one fragrance on the other person but dislike the same fragrance when we wear them ourselves. To understand why is this so, here are two things to keep in mind: when you wear the same perfume

When did you start and how difficult was it to work with Italian perfume brands?

One of the first Italian brands that we established a relationship with was SALVATORE FERRAGAMO. However, if I recall, in general, the first relationship we started was with French brands. First there was Salvador Dali, followed by Clarins, Spanish - Paco Rabanne, then Italian brands followed. Getting started with the first brand is a little difficult, then when others see strong brands working with you, they develop a desire to interact with you.

We started working with Italian perfume brands around 1996 - 1997. Having a close relationship with the Ferragamo brand name is a dream come true for many. Salvador Ferragamo is a seemingly ordinary man who was originally a merchant and tailor, but he eventually created a vast empire. I found it exciting and interesting to work with this company. I have had many pleasant moments with the Ferragamo family. They invite us to dinner at their mansion at least once a year. I especially remember on one of my first visits, we were advised to deal with the Moscow office. It took a lot of effort to convince them that Georgia can have a separate supply and that our own company would be a distributor. Eventually, I achieved that on that meeting.

Today Ferragamo is no less a powerful family than Medici.

the founder of this great family business, which he created with his own strength and brilliance. In general, the perfume business is beyond the common business vision of buying and selling and it is more about personal relationships.

What about your relations with the Tiziana Terenzi brand?

Although we have been working with the Tiziana Terenzi brand for only three years, the connection we share with them is invaluable. I have great respect for its creator, Paolo Terenzi.

Tiziana is Paolo’s sister and, their great-grandfather was one of the first to make scented candles for the Catholic churches. By the way, the Terenzi brand is still producing scented candles. Paolo is in charge of the company, which is the main drive of the brand.

I have a special relationship with Paolo Terenzi himself. When I first heard about this brand, it was about 5-6 years old. Paolo was taking personal orders then, for example, he had already begun to make an exclusive fragrance for Sheikhs. He is a very versatile, creative and sociable person. He has visited Georgia twice already and right there in our shop, he created individual fragrances for customers during the day. His attitude towards our country is truly

The French brand Memo, has such a direct history. The brand is headed by a couple. Wife is a writer, and the husband is a marketing specialist who worked in the L’oreal group for ten years.

They travel to different countries, and wherever they go, the wife writes a story about that country, and her husband creates a fragrance to match. This fragrance is sold at Aromateque with a little history brochure. Every country, every corner where they travel, they dedicate a scent.

What is your view of Georgian-Italian relations, why Italy?

Italians are creative and hardworking in many fields. And for me, Italy is one of the most important countries. At the same time, the mentality of Italians and Georgians are very similar to each other.

Today, one way or another, we have relationships with many Italian companies. With any brand we work with, we strive to do more than pragmatic buying and selling. We strive to share our great culture and to show everyone our worth as partners. By the way, we work very closely with the Embassy of Italy, and we are involved in almost all of their initiatives. Just over a year ago, I helped one of my Italian friends to set up a men’s oversize clothes store. This is the brand known as Renco. It is one hundred years old and is the only brand in Italy that supplies men with large clothing. Even the Italian ambassador was pleased that such things were being done to deepen relations.

Georgian-Italian relations have a long history. As early as in the second century AD, Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius erected a statue on Mars Square in honor of King Iberia, Pharsmanes II the Valiant. We need to take care of such stories and relationships.

What fragrance news should your customers expect from the Lutecia Group?

In 1990-1991, when we started the perfume business, I first went to Paris. I wanted to replicate the same beauty I saw over there here so, I got into the business with that passion. When I setup the first Yves Rocher store, the whole city was dark. There were seated rallies - “What does this do here!” Truth be told, it took me a big fight. When we lit up the store, I remember an old woman passing by, put her things on the ground and shouted, “How beautiful it is!” Then I realized I was doing a good job. This passion continues today.

At this point we have ongoing talks with quite a few brands.

When I start a relationship with a company, it may take years before it turns out a distribution network. If it came in two years, that’s a very good result. From September 29 to October 4, the annual exhibition is usually held in Cannes, and we have been attending this exhibition each year for twenty-two years now. This year we were represented by a big team. There were times when I was going alone, then two of us, three ... and now we are eleven people going there to bring to our market the new fragrances our loyal customers are waiting to enjoy and wear with pride.

ollowing Georgia’s independence from the Soviet Union in the early 90s, Georgia emerged on the world stage riddled with several crisis emanating from the civil wars that had overwhelmed the country. Georgia at that point appeared on the world stage as an unfamiliar country cut off from the rest of the world; her hope of survival was at a diminished level.

At a time when Georgia’s poverty-stricken population was experiencing the direct throes of electricity and natural gas shortage, amidst a lack of basic essentials, it was impossible to think of an international festival in Georgia. Despite the many challenges, artistic director Keti Dolidze, gathered the world’s greatest stars in the world of art and organized the first international art festival after Georgia’s independence for the Georgian audience. The GIFT was founded by the International Star Board.

The festival was created in 1997 by a combination of world leading theater festivals, artists and leading producers who are still current members of the GIFT festival’s international management.

This list includes notable names such as: William Burdett-Coutts Artistic Director of Edinburgh Festival and Riverside Studio London; Rob Brookman - Adelaide Festivals Deputy Executive Director; Sasha Waltz - Artistic Director of Berlin’s Staatsballet - Vanessa Redgrave actress and others. The only Georgian member of the GIFT festival’s management is the festival’s artistic director - Keti Dolidze.

DIPLOMATIC ROLE

GIFT bridged the gap for the lack of foreign relations representatives in Georgia during that time when diplomatic missions were not operating in the country.

When the ambitious and seemingly unbelievable plan to create the festival was shared, Georgia was a newly born independent state that was almost unknown outside the post-Soviet space. In the post-war reality of Georgia, the diplomatic missions of various countries were not yet in operation. Also, when consultations and meetings with foreign producers commenced, GIFT’s artistic director and general manager were only able to obtain British visas in Turkey. After arriving in London, they began to meet with the international art community, who were first convinced of the festival’s prospects before the art community in Georgia. At a time when there was no air traffic between Georgia and England, they were able to bring in around 300 artists from London to Tbilisi on a specially designated charter. Thus, the festival became the first Georgian institution to create an important international platform in Georgia thus assuming an important role as cultural diplomat.

STRUCTURE The GIFT structure is entirely based on the Edinburgh Festival structure and designed by the same festival staff.

In the 1990s, Georgia lacked the specialized knowledge, experience, and personnel to make preparations for the GIFT festival and manage the festival as was required for a leading international art festival. It was at this time that they met with William Burdett-Coutts, artistic director and CEO of Edinburgh festival, who did not hesitate to share experiences with the up-and-coming GIFT festival team.

Burdett-Coutts sent the entire Edinburgh Festival administrative team to Georgia to prepare for the festival. Burdett-Coutts team led

RIGOUROUS SELECTION PROCESS FOR THE BEST WORKS The GIFT’s festival program only features the best art works.

In addition to the set international directorate, GIFT annually employs leading producers from around the world to reflect on the festival’s rich and varied program. The international recommendations team will eventually align with the only Georgian member of the directorate and the festival’s artistic director. However, the selection process is very strict and as a result only the best works from anywhere around the world can be showcased at the festival.

WORLD WIDE FOCUS AND SUPPORT The festival is one of few platforms around the world that receives massive support from various countries around the world.

Every year different countries grace the focus of the festival thus allowing the festival’s visitors and viewers to get closer to the art and culture of GIFT’s focus country. Embassies and Ministries of Culture of the focus countries are usually actively involved in the preparation of the Focus Program, and are allowed to contribute in great deals including financial, to the success of presenting their nations culture in the festival. Some of the previous focus countries who have funded GIFT festival in the past include the Ministries of Culture of Germany, Italy, Norway, Japan and other countries.

AFFORDABILITY One can find the latest art shows exhibitions from around the world at GIFT for the most affordable price.

Another reason why the Gift Festival takes a prominent place among world festivals is its price. It is one of a few festivals whose mission and values remain unchanged after two decades. GIFT, as a public-spirited festival, is still committed to providing access to the broader community of art lovers. Although its state and foreign funding is only a small part of the budget for other similar festivals, GIFT gives its viewers the opportunity to view the world’s best works of art at the lowest cost. The average opera listener has been conversant with you for many years, and various leading opera scenes are always looking forward to your concerts. However, Italy is still the most prominent place in your life. Tell us, how did you cross path with this country?

Italy is the cradle of opera and when I came to Italy, I immediately fell in love with it upon first exposure because of its similarities to Georgia in terms of traditions, hospitable people, wonderful language, culture, history, everything in principle and, it has been in my heart ever since. Italy has given me a lot of things in terms of my career and I will always be grateful to this country, though my homeland is only one and this is Georgia, Italy remains my second home. I’m glad I can talk a lot about Georgia in Italy and, when I come to Georgia, I can talk a lot about Italy. My love for this country is eternal and will never fade away.

What role did Italy play in your career success, and what do you think your life would be like without this country?

If not for this country, cultural treasures in general would be very empty, because Italy has given the world some of the greatest artists, scientists, writers, architectural structures, as well as Italian cuisine which is very unique and much more. Without Italy, world culture and history would be much poorer.

Personally, this country gave me a lot. First of all, it gave me a chance and it paved the way for me to get to the world stage, it also gave me great knowledge of what I want to use in my own country. After my country, Italy has given me so many things that I will always cherish. Consequently, if I can do something for Georgia, I will also try to do for Italy, and in general, I will try to keep these two countries in a positive relationship with each other.

but you are a kind of image of Georgia in many countries around the world, which has made you a kind of ambassador of Georgia. How do you view this responsibility?

I totally agree with the fact that artists who come to different countries around the world are ambassadors of their own country so, is a person leaving their family, he or she represents their family. Every success for a Georgian artist or a representative in any field of art, even an athlete, any victory, of course, is on behalf of Georgia, and we must all take this with great responsibility, as each step we take will affect our country. When you are unable to be in Georgia physically, you are often joining a variety of important social media campaigns.

Not long after the Russian government banned flights to Georgia, you also shared a video about a campaign to promote Georgia’s tourism and you invited your Italian listeners to Georgia. What is the role of cultural diplomacy in times like these?

Of course, it’s an important role to play, and it’s one of the important tribunes you could use, and I didn’t hesitate to do so, and many other Georgian musicians later did the same. I think it may be small, but it was very important for me to do it, because I felt there was a great danger that Georgia would face and several problems would emanate because tourism is vital to our country.

I would like to reiterate that if anyone has the opportunity to do even the slightest, right now, Georgia needs it very much. This is the country that is actually supporting tourism, and it has been such a success in terms of tourism, and it must not stop there.

On the contrary, it must be developed and strengthened, so we must work in this direction.

Let’s go back to your second home, Italy. What do you think is the connection between Georgia and Italy, and how close is Georgia to the European space in which Italy is located?

Georgia is Europe, we are at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. I think Georgia is the oldest and most fascinating part of Europe that has always belonged to Europe, we just have our traditions that are precious to me, that we have to preserve. This includes our language, our faith and our identity, we must keep it, but at the same time being a part of Europe, I consider it a very important task. Italy, as I have mentioned, reminds me of Georgia with its landscape and nature, with its people, cuisine, temperament, and love for music. We have a lot in common and I want our friendship to grow even deeper. By the way, the Italians, they cheer us, and they are closely following the developments, always interested in and always favor our country. As I have previously mentioned in my interview, I repeat as it is clear for all to see Georgia is fighting hard to be independent, free, to accomplish a State where happy people live and we are only driven by it. So, everyone is sympathetic to us, especially the Italians.

After this year of active work, what are your future plans and should we expect to see your concert in Georgia in the near future?

I am planning a very important event in the framework of my charity foundation, The Desire Tree, where I was joined by Beso Shamugia, Ph.D., who is the founder of the Road to Honor, and he came up with the idea to come together and implement the project together. I liked this idea very much. I think it will be very interesting working in tandem with him. This merger and everything will be fully set in Georgia on December 7th. As for my career, my future plans are great - Korea, China, Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Japan, Naples, are many other places where I will have concerts and ignite my creative passion.

uca Chikovani is a Georgian born singer who has been living in Italy since his early childhood. In the late 1990s, living in the newly formed independent state of Georgia posed a lot of difficulties for many Georgian citizens including Luca and his mother. This hardship forced them to seek greener pastures and Italy offered them a good chance at a better life. The future at that time held faint promises for Luca that he couldn’t have imagined that his name would become famous in a foreign country in a matter of years.

internet users in his teenage years and he became a sensation a few years ago. The video which was the beginning of an incredible journey for Luca, was shot by the singer using his own smartphone. It garnered 300,000 views on YouTube in just a few hours and signaled the beginning of Luca’s music career. After his successful music debut, Luca started to make appearances on MTV and then signed a contract with Universal Music shortly after. Luca also bagged his acting debut recently as he looks to fully cement his place in the entertainment industry.

In this interview with Diplomat Magazine, Luca talked about his success in the entertainment world and he touched on other interesting topics.

Luca, in one of your interviews, you mentioned that you’re a Georgian who has been adopted by Italy. What role did Italy play in your life and career development?

Also, how important is Italy to you?

I was born in Georgia, Tbilisi in 1994 but I came to live in Italy with my mom when I was around 5 years old. I had all of my schooling here and grew up here in Italy but never lost my contact with Georgia. I visited Georgia every 1-2 years to see my Grandma in Borjomi. I grew up here in Italy so I took on many behaviors common among Italians but I have always felt Georgian. My grandma was a really big lover of our county and she taught me what it means to be a Georgian, she taught me to be proud of Georgia and to honor and respect women, so I feel really lucky that she taught me that. Italy really helped me a lot and Italians were the first to believe in me, as I started my career from nothing and worked really hard without knowing anyone and without anyone’s help, but Italy really supported me in a lot of ways. I feel really lucky to know these two different cultures and to be able to enjoy a mix of them to deliver the best.

The video you recorded on your phone made you popular when you were still a teenager. Tell us about it.

That’s right. I started recording with my phone and webcam when I was 14 years old. I observed that many singers were becoming popular via this new platform called YouTube and I thought why not me? So, I started uploading videos of me singing in my room and slowly the views began to pick up. Then I started going on tours around Italy with some other YouTube creators and with the support of MTV and Gibson, I gained new friends with time. I don’t like to call them fans because they are the reason for my little success so, they are completely part of my team and I don’t like to just call them fans. Then Universal Music discovered me in one of those concerts and asked me to sign a contract with them just one week after. I released my first album called START with them and it recorded unexpected success because it became the 3th most sold album in Italy and all the journals and TV channels talked about this. It was big because in that period I was the first artist who was noticed on YouTube and signed by Universal Music so, it was something new for the media.

gian viewers are getting acquainted to your work now. Why do you think this is happening now?

Really famous is a big word. I don’t think I’d like to use that word. I’ve always done music because I want to share my ideas with my people and slowly the idea has become accepted by a lot of people. This is the reason I’ve never asked anybody in Georgia to promote me or my music because, I always thought that Georgia was going to know about me without me telling or asking them. I’ve always wanted to make Georgia and Georgians proud but I didn’t know Georgian language well and felt really embarrassed because of this, but last year I decided to focus and started learning Georgian. I had really big help from friends in Georgia especially from one girl who really cared to make me study Georgian so I could speak and write in Georgian language. Women can make you do incredible things. I never cared to be popular or famous, I just wanted to share my music and ideas with the people, because sometimes with music, you can help a lot of people. That’s my goal, to do something for the people.

You had a movie debut recently, tell us about this movie and what place do you think the acting profession would take in your career?

I had really great luck if I have to be sincere. The director of the movie Alice Rorwacher, was watching MTV and she saw my music video. She immediately gave my agents a call and they agreed to cast me so, I went for the casting and it was actually terrible. I was really scared but she believed in me and wanted me to play this lead role in the movie so, she chose me. The movie was a huge experience for me because I got the chance to work with one of the greatest directors in the world and it wasn’t easy, but I had the best training even while working with her. In the movie, Nicoletta Braschi, the wife of Roberto Benigni (Life Is Beautiful) played the role of my mother.

She was adorable throughout the experience and I also met Roberto during the Cannes Film festival. The entire experience

was incredible but I felt a little bit broken in my heart because my grandma who was the biggest fan of Roberto and Nicoletta, unfortunately passed away a few years ago. You cannot imagine how much I wanted to make her know that I’ve worked with her heroes, to show that I’ve made a movie with Nicoletta Braschi. I cannot imagine how happy she will be but I’m sure she knows now from paradise.

What are your future plans for music and acting? Are you planning to do some projects in Georgia?

This year I visited many countries around the globe to present our movie Happy as Lazzaro to film festivals and more importantly, I was able to proudly represent my country Georgia. We started with winning the Cannes Film Festival and then many other festivals also in China, Korea etc. I’ve thought about furthering my acting career because I really liked the experience and it’s another way to express yourself differently from music. I always wanted to portray other characters sometimes and many other people do too but, I think we kill our possibilities majorly because of our Ego, and our personality. I’m a collector, I collect personalities because they give me experiences, I’m a really fluid person and, when I’m with different people, I pick on their accents and their movements really easily and, all of this makes my experience in life bigger. My experience in life is unique because I know life differently. I think it’s really important to be open to change your mind, our humanity has become really proud and sometimes this ego creates problems for us. From the movie, I also learned many things. I completely lost interest in materialism because I see that our society is getting really far away from humanity. We are becoming machines just in search of money and fame and this is really bad for our future, as we think that our happiness is determined by the new iPhone or new clothes or new car. We need to wake people up. They are blowing up your mind with this material things so, we need to open our eyes and understand that real happiness has nothing in common with material things, we should go back to love people, to feel emotions and not hate others. We are always judging people, and we need to stop because this will only make you feel bad and never happy. The only enemies you will find is in our mind and we should understand this. So, this experience really made me think that acting can increase my person and every role can give me something more and this is why I really want to continue this career. I’m trying to reach the big heights in Hollywood, I want to work with music and films in the USA so as to let them know about Georgians. My biggest dream will be to gain some money and then create scholarships for talented Georgian kids who needs all the help they can get. I will do all my best to reach this goal. As for my music, I’m working on a new album and it will be really experimental. I’m not going to say more because I do not want to bore your audience. uska Jorjoliani is a famous Georgian who writes in the Italian language. The Italian writing community speaks positively about her works today and appreciates her as a promising writer with several laudable works. However, the path taken to achieve her success was not exactly easy as Jorjoliani explains. Everything started with the tearful history of the war from the village of Chuburkhini in the Gali district. Ruska Jorjoliani had a conversation with us at Diplomat magazine and took us on a trail of the adventure that brought her to the literature frontiers of two countries.

Let us start with how you moved from Georgia to Italy at a young age, how did you find yourself in Palermo?

When we arrived in Tbilisi, it was a very difficult time for many of us living as IDPs after the Abkhazian war. In 1996, we heard about a project being implemented by the newly formed Society Georgia-Italy whose president was Vakhtang Esvanjia.

Representatives of Palermo and Tbilisi have a cordial relationship that has been established since the 1980s, with the then Mayor of Palermo Leoluca Orlando having a special relationship with Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II. Even now, when he meets with a Georgian, he is proud to point out the cross of the patriarch and say, ‘I am half-Georgian’. In 1996, he was mayor of the second convocation and, when he heard about the situation in Georgia, he took interest in the fate of thousands of children. He took a decision to provide humanitarian aid for children IDPs and he even invited them to live in better conditions for several months. I was among the selected kids, too, when

I was 11 years old. We came to Palermo via a chartered flight and we were placed in the care of different families. That’s how I got into the family that I still belong to. We could visit these families every summer during the long holidays at the end of the school year.

Do you remember those first emotions and how they made you feel when you arrived in Italy?

I saw a video of our arrival in Italy a few months ago, we all looked pretty scared and we wore confused faces. There was the fear of language barrier, of living with strangers, the fear of not seeing our families long enough. That scene captured a number of different emotions but when we met and got acquainted with our host families, I remember that I became a little calm there.

When did you realize that writing was what you wanted to do?

When I arrived in Italy, I started writing a blog, perhaps because of my emotional state and nostalgic mood. I was observing everything and writing about everything. I even thought that all the other kids around me were also writing. I remember one time, I asked out of curiosity, “You don’t write?”. I was very surprised to hear that others were not writing.

I wrote down my fears, my vague expectations for the future.

I wrote in Georgian as much as I could. Writing alleviated the burden of being in a foreign country. Then I felt that it was fun and that it was going well. When I became a teenager, I started translating poetry, translating from Georgian into Italian and vice versa. However, I did not think that I would create something serious during this time.

At a very young age, in Italy, you attained the status of a talented and promising writer. At the age of 22, your poem became a favorite of the poetry competition, Mondello Giovani. How did this happen?

When I graduated from Tbilisi State University and came here, I realized that I was ready to do the work myself and take the matter more seriously. One of the first things I did was exactly the poem that won the competition. Of course, that motivation turned out to bring me closer to writing.

You write in Italian and Corrimano Publishing published your first book, La tua presenza è come una città in 2016, How difficult was it for a Georgian girl to go to an Italian publishing house and convince them that her work really deserved publication?

The journey to having my novel published was really difficult, at first, I didn’t think anyone would find it worthy. Publishers receive thousands of pieces every month. In many cases, they may lose sight of your submission. The risk of publishing books by debutant authors is unknown to many publishers. In my case, I would say I was really lucky.

Corrimano, the publishing house for my book, is a brain child of young people in Palermo. They were looking for new pens. They were more open to discover valuable writings. I went to them and took the first part of the book but, they didn’t promise anything, I remember I was waiting for their response

for several months, meanwhile at that time, I used to send my writing to other publishing houses but they were rejecting it without reading. And then, I received the call from Corrimano and was told to come with the second part, as they are willing to publish the book.

What were your first impressions of the Italian reader?

My first readers were Palermo residents. I felt great interest and warmth from them. For the first time nationally, a review of my writing was published in the newspaper, La Stampa. This review paved the way for the book. Then I was contacted from northern Italy, Florence, Milan and other parts of Italy. The messages that I continue to receive till this day are heartwarming and a kind of stimuli to me.

In the book La tua presenza è come una città, the action takes place in the Soviet Union, in one of the fictional cities, and the main theme is Stalinist repression. Why did you choose to write about this period?

It was a reality I knew somehow. The reality that bothered me. I was born in the Soviet Union and witnessed its first hand ruins in my youth. I think it is even worse to live in these ruins.

Actually, the prototype of the fictional city is Georgia, but I also didn’t want anyone to think I was writing about Georgia and trying to get attention, due to my exile status or my past.

Many would indirectly feel some bias if they can tell that the author is Georgian.

As I am aware, you are working on a new book too, what is this book about?

The book is in the process of editing and will be released in March. In this new novel, the story begins in Italy in the 20s and 30s of the 20th century and lasts until the end of the 50s, until the beginning of the economic boom. This is a book about the Fascist period, the history of Italy, and about something that remains yet unchanged. In particular, there is something in the national character that makes history, and vice versa, which history gives an outlook and shape. This topic was rather risky.

At first glance, it was as if I should have no claim on Italian history. However, why not, it is a sightless reality that may be of interest to even Italians.

In one of your interviews you said that you are a Georgian writer who writes in Italian language because of the circumstances. Do you think about writing in Georgian language in the future?

Inevitably, I believe that if I can really create something, and if I have any talent, measuring that talent should be first and foremost in my native language. Writing in my native language needs readiness, it is a different psychological state when you share a direct reality and connection with the reader.

Italy and Georgia are two countries that connect your past, present and future. What does it mean for you to carry these two great cultures?

I feel very responsible. The two main cultural symbols of Georgians and Italians are literature and language. Consequently, when you have to write in one language or another, you have nothing to do with the people of these great literary traditions and you must stand at the height of the call. It is especially hard when you are at the border of these two cultures. Sometimes on one side, sometimes on the other, you seem to have to tilt to one side at a time. I have no desire to make a choice, even though it may be necessary and my life may require such decision. To stand on the border of two cultures is a very difficult task, so difficult, and it exceeds any human effort. In addition, there are pros, you own a kind of treasure however, it needs to be used properly and given the right direction. You may have it today, but it might be broken or lost tomorrow. Anyway, I’m ready to go through all this.

I try to contribute to the cultural relations of both countries, through the translations or events organized by embassies, where I see the need for my involvement.

This is the solution, when you are standing on that border.

It’s difficult to maintain equilibrium, but I try to do good on both sides.

provide an educational platform for Georgian youth; allow common people to personally encounter the giants of universal art and admire their masterpieces at home; contribute to enrich the attractiveness of Tbilisi for local and foreign tourists; foster collaborations among cultural institutions in the two countries. We want to share the Italian way of living, in our language “Vivere all’italiana”. These projects have enjoyed a tremendous success: more than 150,000 visitors so far”. The Embassy realized many other successful initiatives. Workshops on technologies and cultural heritage, in collaboration with the CNR (National Research Council) and other Italian institutions, were offered to engage relevant Georgian stakeholders on subjects such as digital storytelling, design and management of XXI century museums, smart cities, cutting edge techniques of conservation and restoration. An Italy-Georgia prize for contemporary art residencies was created. Young artists have the opportunity to spend time in the other country to explore, be inspired and create artworks that have afterwards been showcased in joint exhibitions (the first one was entitled “Through unfamiliar”).

An award on innovation was also established, allowing young start-uppers to intern in Newsteeel incubator and in the Apple Academy in Naples. “Archaeology at school” is a program conceived to get students closer to the exploration of the past and familiarize them with the Italian archaeological missions in

Georgia, also through comics, animated cartoons, and board games. The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has been funding for many years numerous excavations and research programs in Georgia: in Dmanisi (with the University of Florence, on the trail of 1,8 million years old human being and animals), in Natsargora and Lagodekhi (University of Venice Ca’ Foscari), in Gonio (University of Ferrara, studying the Roman fortress on the Black Sea), in Dzalisa (Latium Superintendent for archaeological patrimony and Central Institute for Restoration in Rome, taking care of the Roman IV cent. BCE mosaic), in Samtskhe-Javakheti (ISMEO, institute for studies on Mediterranean and East, on iron age fortresses). The examples could go on. Italian film and theatrical festivals, ballet performances, concerts, book presentations and conferences have also been organized.

But let’s focus on the main exhibitions realized by the Embassy of Italy (a series of “first time in Tbilisi”), starting with the double event “Universal Values. Botticelli, the Beauty. Caravaggio, the Light” (05.10.2017 – 29.11.2017) at the Dimitri Shevarnadze National Gallery. This program dedicated to two geniuses that set new artistic standards for centuries to come. The core of the exhibition “Venus pudica” was Botticelli’s “Venere”, from the Galleria Sabauda in Turin. This iconic painting is a symbol of Botticelli’s genius, of the centrality of human being and the aesthetic ideals of the Renaissance. At the same time, art and technology met in the “impossible exhibition” “Caravaggio - Opera omnia”, a virtual tour of some 40 Caravaggio’s masterpieces (HD digital reproductions in full scale) that nobody could see together in the same museum: an unprecedented opportunity for a fascinating journey through the adventurous life and the amazing work of the master of “chiaroscuro”.

The Embassy rightly put the spotlight on the Renaissance, perhaps the greatest period for Italian art. The exhibition “Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel: preparatory drawings” (02.02.2018 – 03.04.2018) displayed some precious graphic works from “Casa Buonarroti” of Florence, offering the comparison with the characters later painted in the Universal Judgment ceiling fresco and walking visitors through the life of Michelangelo, thanks to a special video documentary. “The geniuses of the Renaissance” (28.05.2018 – 26.08.2018) allowed visitors to admire some other 45 original works by Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raffaello, Botticelli, Pinturicchio, Vasari, Piero di Cosimo, and many others prominent artists. On the wave of Caravaggio’s exhibition success and to honor the 500th anniversary since da Vinci’s death, “Leonardo. Opera Omnia” (27.02.2019 – 29.03.2019) proposed another virtual tour of all the most famous paintings (with real size high definition digital panels, including the gigantic Last Supper). An additional possibility to witness first-hand the very symbol of human genius: painter, engineer, scientist, architect and inventor. “Titian, master of color” (15.05.2018 – 05.08.2018) was a tribute to another protagonist of the Renaissance. The amazing “Virgin and Child” (Albertini Madonna), from Venice Gallery Academy museum, was displayed at Tbilisi National Gallery. This late masterpiece of the

From Baroque to modern art. “Esoteric De Chirico, traveler between two worlds” (27.03.2019 – 27.05.2019), paid tribute to the founder of metaphysical art. A selection of paintings and one sculpture, from 1923 to the 1970s, covered all the main themes of the XX century “Pictor Optimus”: dream and reality; empty squares and enigmatic mannequins to express anguish and melancholy; the “eternal return” of ancient Greece and mythology as inextinguishable sources of inspiration to be revisited through the restlessness of the contemporary soul.

Talking about contemporary, the exhibition “Evidence. A New State of Art” (25.05.2018 – 26.08.2018) highlighted some of the best contributions of 60 years of artistic innovation showcasing famous Italian masters such as Pistoletto, Palladino, Mainolfi.

Tradition and innovation can combine with one another, as we have seen. Youth can get closer to masterpieces from the past, if they one can present the artworks with a language more comprehensible to young generations (images, digital data banks, virtual reality). This is the goal of “Immagica. Italian Art, a journey into beauty” (31.05.2019 – 30.09.2019) at the Simon Janashia National Museum. Other exceptional exhibits are ongoing. The National Gallery hosts “The form of color: from Tintoretto to Canaletto” until November 20. The exhibit, on loan from the Trieste Gallery of Ancient Art, covers three centuries of Italian art, from mid XVI to XVII century. It showcases different schools of Northern Italy (from Genoa to Venice) and a large spectrum of themes and genres: from landscapes and still life to portraits, and then love, myth, and religion. Another gem shared with the Georgian visitors is the exhibit displaying the “Mosaics from the Capitoline Museums”, an extraordinary overview of the Ancient Rome - its colors, its habits – through 21 precious pieces belonging to the museum of the Italian capital. An immersive show will walk visitors through a Roman house to showcase the context in which these mosaics where used.

The show goes on. And the Embassy of Italy remains committed to develop ever closer cultural ties with this country.

artistic education courses, courses of Italian language and culture and more. Since 2002, more than 300 Georgians have benefited from these scholarships. Among them, just to mention the artistic sector, soprano Nino Machaidze, and mezzo sopranos Nino Surguladze and Anita Rachvelishvili, whose amazing voices enchant people all over the world, and Tamar Licheli, talented pianist, winner of many prestigious international competitions and founder of the International Music Festival “Tengiz Amirejibi”. Together with the International Education Center (IEC), the Embassy of Italy launched a parallel competition for scholarships offered by some ten Italian prestigious universities in different fields for post graduate education (a particular focus is devoted to the scientific and technological domain.) This program was made possible thanks to an agreement between the Georgian IEC (which provides cofinancing) and the CRUI (the Conference of the Italian Rectors). Other Italian universities are expected to join the program in the next future, broadening the range of opportunities for Georgian students.

Other than its amazing artistic and cultural heritage, delicious food and breathtaking nature, Italy can boast an excellent academic curriculum and environment. From engineering to physics, from design to nanotechnogies Italian universities can cover the whole spectrum of disciplines.

Understandably so. The history of Italian university system is very old. The first modern University in Europe, the Alma mater Studiorum – University of Bologna, was founded in 1088. Since then, Italy formed some of the greatest minds of all times, from Galileo Galilei to Enrico Fermi and Rita Levi-Montalcini. Nowadays, Italian higher-educational system includes 61 public universities, 30 private universities, 11 public research organizations and many AFAM (The Institutes of High Training in Art, Music and Dance). There are many (over 300) courses offered in English. In the academic year 2016/2017, the students enrolled in Italian universities courses were 1,6 million; 67.454 in AFAM courses. According to the Qs Ranking by subject of February 2019, Italy is the fourth country in Europe and seventh in the whole world, with 44 universities cited in 48 subjects. Italy holds the highest rate record of academic publications on research magazines of excellence in Europe, especially in the fields of biology,

natural sciences, physics, pharmacy, medicine, mathematics and computer science. Italian researchers and professors have always had an excellent reputation abroad and many of them work in prestigious universities all over the world.

People interested in studying in Italy should visit the website StudyInItaly in order to get more information and plan their future academic career in Italy. There are also many scholarships given directly by universities; students should regularly check the Embassy website (ambtbilisi.esteri.it) in order to be updated on the numerous opportunities offered.

The Embassy of Italy is working hard to promote Italian language and culture in Georgia. Italian language is becoming increasingly popular among Georgian students. Last year, around 20 schools started offering Italian as a second foreign language, others are following suit, also in the Adjara region. The Vakhtang Esvanjia Italian School Tsiskari offers bilingual Italian-Georgian education in Tbilisi. Learning the language of one of the main trading partners of Georgia among the EU members and the second industrial powerhouse in Europe can prove a very interesting asset for young Georgians. The Italian Embassy has worked in close coordination with Georgia’s Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, and in continued contact with principals and teachers. The Embassy is advising on the review of the programs, provided funding to the schools, to facilitate the creation of chairs of Italian language and the purchase of textbooks for school. The Embassy even promoted the project of a brand new Italian language textbook created for Georgian students as the result of the collaboration of experts from the University for Foreigners of Siena and a working group in Tbilisi of Georgian Italianists. Tbilisi Dante ძალიან აქტიურია, გთავაზობთ ენისა და ხელოვნების კურსებს, განსაკუთრებით ძალიან ახალგაზრდა სტუდენტებისთვის. კიდევ ერთი მნიშვნელოვანი პუნქტია ილიას უნივერსიტეტის იტალიური ცენტრი. ამ და სხვა ბევრ დაინტერესებულ პირთან ერთად საელჩო ორგანიზებას უწევს ღონისძიებებს, რომლებიც მოიცავს განათლების გამოფენებში მონაწილეობის მიღებასა და იტალიური ენის კვირეულის ორგანიზებას - ”Settimana della lingua italiana”, ინიციატივას, რომელიც ხორციელდება ყოველწლიურად ოქტომბერში იტალიის საგარეო საქმეთა და საერთაშორისო თანამშრომლობის სამინისტროს მიერ 2001 წლიდან. 2019 წლის ღონისძიებაში ყურადღება გამახვილებულია იტალიურ ენასა და ინფორმაციული ტექნოლოგიების ურთიერთმიმართებაზე, ასევე ციფრული ტექნოლოგიების პოტენციალზე სწავლებისა და სწავლისთვის. 2019 წლის სეზონის მთავარი თემა იქნება „იტალიური სცენაზე“ (21.10-27.10). საელჩო ასევე მხარს უჭერს იტალიელი მწერლებისა და პოეტების მონაწილეობას სხვადასხვა პროგრამებში. ტრადიციულად, მასშტაბური წარმომადგენლობა უზრუნველყოფილია თბილისის ლიტერატურის საერთაშორისო ფესტივალზე. გასულ მაისში სამმა ქალმა პოეტმა -ანიტა პისკაციმ, რიტა პაჩილიომ და როსარია ლო რუსომ წარმოადგინეს თავიანთი ნამუშევრები, რომლებიც ქართულად თარგმნა ნუნუ გელაძემ; ეს იყო საქართველოს განათლების, მეცნიერების, კულტურისა და სპორტის მინისტრის და"ნოდარ დუმბაძის" ფონდის მიერ ორგანიზებული პროექტი "Libri Viventi" (ცოცხალი წიგნები). უფრო მეტიც, მელანია მაზუკომ იტალიის საგარეო საქმეთა და საერთაშორისო თანამშრომლობის სამინისტროს მხარდაჭერის წყალობით, ხათუნა ცხადაძის მიერ ქართულად თარგმნილი თავისი ცნობილი რომანი "ვიტა" განიხილა და გამოქვეყნდა გამომცემლობა "სულაკაურის" მიერ. მრავალი სხვა იტალიელი ავტორი - პასოლინიდან ეკომდე - ითარგმნა ქართულად იტალიური ინსტიტუტების მხარდაჭერით. საელჩოს მხარდაჭერით მოღვაწეობს ლექტორი იტალიიდან, რომელიც კურსებს ატარებს წამყვან აკადემიურ ინსტიტუტებში, მაგალითად, თბილისის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტი, თბილისის სამხატვრო აკადემია და თბილისის სახელმწიფო კონსერვატორია. კიდევ ერთი პროფესორი იტალიიდან გაგზავნეს სკოლებში სამუშაოდ და ძირითადად დასაქმებულია ცისკარის “Scuola italiana-ში” და სხვა საჯარო სკოლებში. ”თუ გავითვალისწინებთ იტალიური ენის მუდმივად მზარდ პოპულარობას როგორც მოზრდილებში, ისე ბავშვებში, მათ დიდ სიყვარულს იტალიელთა და იტალიური კულტურის მიმართ, იტალიელი ტურისტების მიერ საქართველოში ჩამოსვლაზე გაჩენილ ბოლოდროინდელ ინტერესს და ჩვენს ძლიერ პასუხისმგებლობას იტალიური ენის პოპულარიზაციის საქმეში, დარწმუნებულები უნდა ვიყოთ, რომ ჩვენ შეგვიძლია, მივაღწიოთ კარგ შედეგს. ეს აშკარად გააძლიერებს ჩვენს ორმხრივ კავშირებს ყველა სფეროში”, - განაცხადა იტალიის ელჩმა ანტონიო ბარტოლიმ.

with the Georgian Ministry of Education, Minerva started offering, since autumn 2018, training courses for teachers of Italian, recognized by the Georgian Ministry. It also created a Moodle platform aimed at sharing material with Georgian teachers of Italian language, and helped the Embassy better identify the school where to activate the teaching of Italian.

Beyond schools, the role of “Società Dante Alighieri” has also to be underscored. Tbilisi Dante is very active, offering courses of language and art, especially for very young students. Another important point of reference is the Ilia University Italian Center.

With these and many other stakehdolders, the Embassy organizes a series of activities spanning from the participation in the Education fairs to the organization of the week of Italian language, “Settimana della lingua italiana”, initiative promoted every year in October by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation since 2001.

The 2019 edition, focused on the relationship between Italian language and information technologies, exploring also the potential of digital technologies for teaching and learning.

“Italian on stage” will be the main theme of the 2019 edition (21.10-27.10) The Embassy also supports the participation of Italian writers and poets in different programs. Traditionally a strong presence is ensured in the Tbilisi International Festival of Literature. Last May three female poets, Anita Piscazzi, Rita Pacilio and Rosaria Lo Russo, presented their works, translated into Georgian by Nunu Geladze; this was part of the project “Libri Viventi” (Alive Books) of the Georgian Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, organized by the Nodar Dumbadze Foundation. Moreover, Melania Mazzucco discussed her famous novel “Vita”, translated into Georgian by Khatuna Tskhadadze and published by Sulakauri Publishing, thanks to the support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Many other Italian authors – from Pasolini to Eco - have been translated in Georgian with the support of the Italian institutions.

The Embassy can count on a lecturer from Italy, giving course at primary academic institutions such as Tbilisi State University I. Javakhishvili, Tbilisi State Academy of Art and Tbilisi State Conservatoire V. Saradjishvili. Another professor was sent from Italy to deal with schools, and is primarily employed in the “Scuola italiana” Tsiskari and other public schools.

“Considering the constantly increasing popularity of Italian language among Georgians, both adults and children, their great love of Italy and its culture, the recent interest shown

by Italian tourists for Georgia, and our strong commitment in promoting our nice language, we are confident that we can achieve good results. And this will obviously strengthen our bilateral ties in every field”, concludes the Italian Ambassador Antonio Bartoli.
