PRATICAL CATHOLICS

The one requirement of membership in the Knights of Columbus is that a man be a “practical Catholic” in union with the Holy See. What does the term “practical Catholic” mean?

Faith for Father McGivney and his Knights was not simply knowing the catechism, important as that is. It was putting into practice the Great Commandment of Jesus: To love God with all yourheartandyourneighboras yourself. True to the parable of the Good Samaritan, love of neighbor does not stop at the church door. It goes out intothe streets, the highways and byways, to encounter those on the margins of society – who were often immigrant Catholics

in Father McGivney’s day – and bringthempracticalcharityand fraternallove.

A “practical Catholic” has a love of home, family and church, where faith is nurtured. Yet his faith leads him into the world, evenaworldsuffusedwithantiCatholic sentiment, in the spirit

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Blessed Michael McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue, may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church.

Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify Blessed Michael McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request).

Through Christ our Lord. Amen

of the Good Samaritan. He is called to bind up the wounds of the sick and abandoned, to provide for their temporal needs, to support the faith of Catholics and pass on the faith to inquirers, and to live a life of prayer and virtue, with love of Godandneighbor.

HIS VISION, YOUR MISSION

You can play a key role in advancing Father McGivney’s cause by joining the Guild for free and praying for his intercession and canonization. May Father McGivney intercede for you!

The Father Michael J. McGivney Guild serves as a source for information about the life, works and spirituality of Father McGivney. The Guild publishes a quarterly newsletter and offers a weekly Mass for the intentions of members.

INSPIRED BY BENEDICT XVI

Taking inspiration from the teaching and witness of the late Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, Knights of Columbus are committed to the practice of charity in service to families, the Church and those in need. In this latest episode of KnightCast, which begins with a message from Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly about the death of Pope Benedict, host Jonathan Reyes talks with guests about the Order’s humanitarian work in Poland and Ukraine, engaging ways to share the Gospel, the unique rewards of a career that supports families’ financial security, and the intersection of sports and faith.

The 2023 Knights of Columbus–Marist Poll also shows support for pregnancy resource centers and opposition to taxpayer-funded abortions.

On the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North and South Dakota, more than 40% of residents live in poverty. In September 2022, Knights from nine North Dakota councils came together to make and outfit 50 beds for families on the reservation. The initiative, which they called “Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep,” was just the latest among a growing number of innovative K of C projects to engage with and assist Indigenous communities since the Order launched its Native Solidarity Initiative in 2019. STATE GROWTH REPORT

We are moving forward into the 2nd half of our Fraternal year. At this point, we just reached 50% of our Goal for Circle of Honor. There is no doubt in my mind that we can reach our Goal by June28th. You need to continually ask men to join our Order. Every mass, every function at Church is an opportunity to ASK Men to JOIN. Because as I have told you many times before, If you do not ask them to join, more than likely they will not.

Membership Program Points

Many of you have filled out the 10728 form for Program reporting, and have listed your Membership Programs on the Ohio State web site. I have reviewed and graded everyone of them As of 1/31/2023 there are 19 programs on there that I have reviewed and left notes on for you to supply additional information, and I will gladly give you the Points once you resubmit with the required information. Go back into the site, and see if your program was approved or reviewed. If it is under review, you need to submit more information. Please do so, as I want to give you the program points…I want your council to succeed.

As of 1/31/2023, there are 205 Councils in the State that have NOT reported 1 new member for this year. Please make an effort to recruit at least 1 new member. If you can, try to recruit 5 or 6, then you will meet the minimum required amount necessary. Every church function, every mass is an opportunity to recruit. I know for fact, that there are several Priests in our State that do not want any recruiting done in their parishes. We have to abide by their wishes. However, that is not to say that you cannot recruit one a man to man basis in church. If you are one of these Councils where the Priest does not want a Membership Drive ..let me know, and I will make arrangements for you to receive credit for a Membership Drive…As long as you recruit someone new.

in order to claim the membership incentives email to mcfreil2019@gmail.com the name(s) of the new member as soon as possible .

GROWTH REPORT

A Word About Council Growth

Every Knight of Columbus gets tired of hearing about council growth. It’s a never ending barrage from Supreme, from the State Council, from your District Deputy and from your Membership Director. Everybody is talking growth! There is a reason you’re inundated with this message:

If your council isn’t growing – it’s dying.

It’s a sad, but accurate commentary. Without new, fresh blood, your council is likely to wither and die. It probably won’t happen quickly, but it most likely will. If the same guys are the

only ones doing anything in your council, it’s in trouble. The more brothers involved in programs and recruiting – the better the chances of growing not only in numbers, but also in service to our Church, our community and our Brother Knights.

So, what are we asking you to do? We are not asking you to be a super salesman for the Knights of Columbus. We are not asking you to stand outside the Church and browbeat men into submission. We are asking you to talk with men. We are asking you to invite them to help with a program. In short, we’re asking that you be an example of what a Catholic man can become.

Introduce yourself and your family to that guy you see at Mass every week.

Mention your next program and ask if he and his family are willing to give a hand. If he says no this time, tell him when the next program comes along and ask him and his family for assistance again. When you ask that way, you’re not putting any pressure on him. Let him and his family see what we are all about.

As St. Francis of Assisi is quoted: “Preach the gospel at all times. Use words only when necessary.” Actions do speak much louder than words. Let the actions of all of us speak loud and clear.

EUCHARISTIC REVIVAL

On June 19, 2022, the Catholic Church in the United States launched a very exciting National Eucharistic Revival. The Diocese of Cleveland is joyfully participating in this three-year process. Diocesan Convocations, retreats and webinars are taking place for bishops, priests, diocesan, parish and school staff as they open their hearts to the Holy Spirit’s action during the first Year of Diocesan Revival. Beginning on Thanksgiving Day the Diocesan Eucharistic Revival team will be posting video testimonies from our priests answering the question, “What does the Eucharist mean to me?” A new video will be posted daily through Christmas. Use the hashtag #EucharistCLE to find or share videos on social media. The Diocese will be also featuring a billboard campaign highlighting quotes from the Bible and the saints about the Eucharist in all eight counties of the Diocese.

Beginning in June of 2023 is the Year of the Parish Revival. Parishes and schools across the country and Northeast Ohio have already begun some exceptional grassroots initiatives to foster a deeper Eucharistic devotion in their parishes. The Knights of Columbus are a national partner for the Revival and we encourage every Council and Assembly to support initiatives in your parishes and within your council.

Here are a few things that you can do:

Visit the National Eucharistic Revival website https://www.eucharisticrevival.org/ Visit the Diocese of Cleveland’s Revival Website: https://www.dioceseofcleveland.org/eucharisticrevival/overview

Talk to your pastor to see what ways the Knights can assist, sponsor and support parish initiatives that could include adult faith formation, holy hours, and faith sharing on the Eucharist for all parishioners. Could your council offer to pray for and with all those preparing to receive First Holy Communion this year?

Participate in the Holy Mass, Eucharistic Adoration and possibly a parish Eucharistic Procession

Learn more about the Eucharist. Visit the Knights of Columbus’ website for resources: https:// www.kofc.org/en/who-we-are/our-faith/eucharist.html

Most importantly tell your story. Answer the question, “What does the Eucharist mean to me?” and share your in your family, at work, at a Council meeting or with friends.

In 2024, there will be National Eucharistic Revival held in Indianapolis with over 80,000 Catholics. The Diocese of Cleveland hopes to have a good representation. Stay tuned for more exciting opportunities in the diocese and our parishes.

Please share the good news of your Council’s activity with the Diocesan Eucharistic Revival Team. You may email me at Gregory Coogan, gcoogan@dioceseofcleveland.org.
