Easter 2023 inches closer and agnello orders come pouring in at local butcher shops, this issue examines Italian-Canadians’ relationship with their faith. (Editor’s note: I’m aware that writing about one’s personal faith in media, especially Catholicism, can be somewhat controversial in 2023. Thankfully, this is an independent publication, and we have the liberty to do so without apology.) I’ve never lost touch with my Catholic faith. The morals and values that were transmitted to me throughout my upbringing, receiving the sacraments, going to Church sporadically and visiting religious shrines in Italy, have fundamentally influenced my daily interactions, thought pattern and ability to ask for forgiveness and grant it in return. Of course, I am human, and my faith is relegated to the back burner at times. As Dave Gahan of the English band Depeche Mode so eloquently put it, I too occasionally “give in to sin.” My fellow millennials, Gen Z or other, often do not share my perspective. It has been greatly challenging for Boomers to transmit their Christian/Catholic heritage to the next of kin—a heritage they themselves did not have much of a choice to accept and participate in until adulthood. There are many reasons for the decline of the Catholic Church in Canada and the Western developed world. The scandals of the last decades understandably turned many off from returning to their local parishes, also making it difficult for them to separate the teachings of their faith from the institution that governs it. As for myself and most of those who still identify as Catholic, the morals and values that are taught in the Holy Bible, with its treasure trove of texts passed down over thousands of years, including the story of Jesus Christ and his teachings in the New Testament, did not automatically get discredited because of institutional scandals. There is also the swath of distractions we are exposed to in our 21st century lives to thank for dwindling Church attendance, ranging from social media to streaming services to (I’ll go there) unlimited pornography, all at the end of our fingertips. Compounded by misinformation promoted on those same platforms, other institu-

ato l’avvicinarsi della Pasqua del 2023 e considerati gli agnelli ordinati presso le macellerie locali, in questa uscita viene esaminato il rapporto degli italo-canadesi con la fede. (Nota del redattore: Sono consapevole del fatto che scrivere della propria fede, soprattutto di cattolicesimo, in una pubblicazione del 2023, può in un certo senso risultare controverso. Per fortuna, la nostra è una pubblicazione indipendente e abbiamo dunque la libertà di farlo senza doverci scusare.) Non mi sono mai allontanato dalla mia fede cattolica. La morale e i valori trasmessimi crescendo, i sacramenti, l’andare sporadicamente in Chiesa e visitare vari santuari in Italia, hanno influenzato profondamente le mie interazioni quotidiane, il mio modo di pensare, la mia capacità di chiedere perdono e di concederlo a sua volta. Senza dubbio, essendo un essere umano, la mia fede è a volte relegata in secondo piano. Come ha ben detto Dave Gahan della band inglese dei Depeche Mode, anch’io a volte “cedo al peccato”. Spesso, i miei amici millenials, Gen Z o altro non condividono il mio punto di vista. È stato molto difficile per i Boomer trasmettere la propria cultura cristiano-cattolica in famiglia, un lascito culturale che essi non hanno avuto molta scelta da accettare e a cui partecipare fino all’età adulta. Sono molte le cause del declino della Chiesa cattolica in Canada e nei paesi sviluppati occidentali. Gli scandali degli ultimi decenni hanno comprensibilmente allontanato molti dalle parrocchie, rendendogli per altro difficile discernere tra i precetti della fede e l’istituzione che la governa. Per quanto riguarda me e molti di coloro che continuano a identificarsi come cattolici, la morale e i valori trasmessi dalla Sacra Bibbia, con il suo tesoro di testi tramandati nel corso di migliaia di anni, tra cui la storia di Gesù Cristo e i suoi precetti nel Nuovo Testamento, non hanno perso credito a causa degli scandali istituzionali. Il calo delle presenze in chiese si deve anche alla pletora di distrazioni a cui siamo esposti nel XXI secolo – spaziando dai social media ai servizi di pornografia illimitata in streaming, tutti
