FIRST TURN
Olliviere , President
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL THREE THOUSAND PLUS MEMBERS OF PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA, GOLD COAST REGION!
As we embark on a new year, I wish you continued enjoyment of your PCA membership. I can insure you that your Board of Directors will do everything possible to ensure that goal.
Last month we held our election for positions within the Regions leadership. Those positions consist of President, Vice President, Treasure, Secretary, and five Director positions. We had an outstanding slate of people
who were nominated and ran for those open positions.
As for the officers of the club, Dottie Kidd, Vice President, Cynthia Fluhart, Secretary, and Carolynn Ditrichs, Club Treasure, ran unopposed and will seamlessly transition into the new Board of Directors.
With completion of the elections, we have had some changes to the makeup of the Board. With my reelection to the Presidency the slate of Officers remains the same as before, where we have a change is in the slate of Directors. New Directors
joining the Board for the first time, are Mark Johnson, Mike Del Poso, and Noemi Sanchez. I feel very confident that these new members will be as diligent in doing the Clubs business as the retiring members were.
The last big event we had was the Holiday Party that completes the year. The festivities were held at Margaritaville Beach Resort in Hollywood Florida, with the theme being Holiday in Paradise. Without a doubt this was a party. You can catch up on the details in this month’s Kassette.
The new year is going to be a challenge to the membership. Between Social Committee, Drivers Ed, Autocross and tours, the calendar is full. The problem the membership will have is to decide what events do they want to take part in.
I must also point out that this year The Gold Coast Region is celebrating it’s 60th Anniversary. We will be celebrating all year long with special aspects to our normal events that highlight the sixty years of Porsche fun that has been enjoyed by the Region.
In closing I want to thank those that served the past two years giving their time and energy in guiding this Club to continued success.

Christy Spangler, Social Chair
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
Not only is it the start of a new year, but we are also celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Gold Coast Region. We kicked off the anniversary at the Holiday in Paradise Party at Margaritaville on December 3rd where we unveiled the 60th anniversary logo and the tagline: “60 Years and Still No Substitute”
We are lucky to be living in a region where we can enjoy and drive our Porsches year-round and have two drive & dines scheduled for this month. The first is to the Islamorada Fish Company and for the second, we are bringing back the popular Stone Crab Run to Everglades City. Thank you to Cynthia Fluhart an Ian Gerada for organizing these great events! The 60th Anniversary committee has been planning events for 2023 and in February, we will have the first of three 60th Anniversary themed tech sessions: The Evolution of
Porsches. This one will focus on early air-cooled Porsches. Do you want to get up close to Porsche Club Racing? You can still sign up to volunteer at the 48 Hours at Sebring Feb. 2-5. This club race is run by dedicated volunteers from both the Gold Coast and Suncoast Regions. Come for a day or the weekend; it is a fun event to work as a volunteer at or to attend as spectator.
Socials on the horizon: January
14 - Drive and Dine to the Islamorada Fish Co.
22 - DRT - be sure to stop by our hospitality tent
28 - Stone Crab Drive and Dine to Everglades City
February
11 - Love Your Porsche cars & coffee at Hagerty Garage + Social at the new Miami location
14 - Valentine’s Day Dinner
25 - Evolution of Porsches Tech session #1 at Zweck in Miami
Stay tuned for upcoming announcements about these events via the enews emails. You can also check the calendar on the GCR website at goldcoastregion.org/ calendar and on clubregistration.net for events and updates.

Happy New Year
I hope 2022 was a good one for you and that 2023 will be even better! Our social team worked diligently to fill the GCR social calendar, and we anticipate that 2023 will exceed past years. The year 2023 is very special for the Gold Coast Region because we will celebrate our birthday in December when we turn 60! The group has planned many events to help the region learn more about our rich history and celebrate our 60 years.
Die Porsche Kassette and the Gold Coast Region website will cover our history from 1963 to 2023. We will hold events at several Porsche shops to discuss different Porsche models by year groupings.
There will also be panel discussions at Drive and Dine locations. Stay tuned for a very exciting year!
I have attended many GCR social events during my twenty-one years in this region. Still, there is one event that truly stood out in 2022. I would like to thank and congratulate everyone on the social committee who worked on the holiday party, which was held in December. It was a job well done! I know this format will again be used as a template for the 60th celebration. I would also like to thank each member who voted in our election. As a result, we have added three new members to the board. Each of them has worked hard in several areas this
past year. They worked with various charity-related events and were involved in Drivers Education, Juniors, Die Porsche Kassette, and many other key positions.
When you get a chance, review the 48 Hours at Sebring website. This event is amazing and is one of the highlights of our PCA year. Please call our volunteer reps for more information, if you have any questions, or to become a volunteer. You will be glad you did.
Throughout 2023, we will be replicating the styles of our Kassette issues from previous years. Notice the old style title that was used for many years pior to our new design. Enjoy the drive, Roger

A New Year and a New Start
Here we are in 2023! We have a whole year ahead of us; let’s hope that our Porsche driving experience is even better than ever before. At this time of the year, many of us put together our New Year’s resolutions.
Here are a few New Year resolutions I’m considering (in no particular order):
• Make it my goal to attend more PCA GCR events and connect with like-minded enthusiasts
• Resolve to take my Porsche on more road trips and adventures in the coming year
• Make it my goal to learn more about the history and heritage of the Porsche brand
• Resolve to explore more of the Porsche model lineup in 2023
• Have as much fun meeting and attending various events with other GCR members
While we have quite a few events planned this year, choosing which ones to go to is never difficult. My favorites are the drive-and-dine events like the Stone Crab Drive-andDine coming up on January 28th, not to mention the Islamorada Drive on January 14th.
I also thoroughly enjoy the overnight stay events, including Escape to the Cape; the past Mount Dora event also springs to mind. No matter what events you favor, make it your New Year’s resolution to get out, enjoy your Porsche, and join us at some upcoming events in 2023.

GOLD COAST REGION CELEBRATES
Margaritaville Style
As folks say, “’Tis the season!” Holiday celebrations abound in December each year and the Gold Coast Region Porsche Club of America members contributed greatly to the joy and frivolity of the season.
On a beautiful Saturday evening in early December, GCR gathered at the Margaritaville Beach Resort in Hollywood for an exceptional night of Porsche camaraderie, outstanding food and libations, and a bit of dancing – including the limbo and a conga line dance. Without a doubt, if you weren’t there, you missed one GREAT PARTY!
Margaritaville Resort, being Jimmy Buffett-themed of course, allowed all attendees to truly relax in beach style: that is, NO coats or ties. With Island Chic as the dress theme, casual beachy type wear was de rigueur with the minor requirement of no flip-flops or shorts; it was an evening dinner party after all. While we didn’t play in the sand, we did have a great amount of play with quite a few surprises and an exceptional bonus or several of them along the way.
We gathered on the 9th floor of the resort, which allowed a great view of the Atlantic Ocean, the moon rising, and the Hollywood Boardwalk Beach parade going on below. As a bonus, we were treated to an open bar with everyone’s favorite adult beverages; top-shelf liquor, wine, and beer. Club attendees consumed a cocktail, glass of chablis or merlot while we enjoyed multiple conversations with fellow members about the past year, and the coming year. While hydrating and conversing, resort attendants brought seemingly endless hot, delicious hors d’ oeuvres to the members, delicious in every bite.
Dinner followed the cocktail hour. We entered the room to be treated to festive tables adorned with centerpieces of Bird of Paradise, Ginger, and palm frond greenery. Cynthia Fluhart’s design skill and passion came through exceptionally well as she designed and arranged the centerpieces as well as the table layouts. Each table of eight was full of Porsche peeps and a special guest ready to enjoy an exceptional dinner
of lobster tail and beef, preceded by a delicious salad, and followed by a stunning chocolate desert and mini rum cake. Those not in attendance missed a great dinner as well!
As the dining proceeded, President Peter Olliviere presented the Officers and Board of Directors for 2023 and offered a short review of the past year’s successes. Throughout the dinner soft music played and a photo show, curated by Mr. Ian Gerada, played on a large screen at the front of the room. Ian was also the unofficial photographer for the event, and he took some really great pics, several of which are already posted at the GCR group page on Facebook. Thanks, Ian.
President Peter’s presentation included special gifts/awards to the outgoing board members who contributed to the Club’s success these past two years. The gift selected by Peter symbolized teamwork and dedication to Club success as offered by each board member. Additionally, he announced winners of the three annual awards for club participation, which are GCR

Family of the Year, GCR Enthusiast of the Year, and GCR Rookie of the Year.
Family of the Year was awarded to Dottie and Steve Kidd. This announcement was not a surprise to anybody. The Kidds give their time and effort freely and continuously for the benefit of GCR and our membership. They jump in and help, not only with their passions (Autocross and Juniors) but with anything that needs to be done with any job in the club.
Enthusiast of the Year awarded to Christy Spangler. As anyone within the club would attest, Christy is/ was everywhere with Porsche events and activities. As a Board member, Social Committee Chair, Kassette contributor, and overall person with a Porsche Passion, Christy was an exceptional choice. As the club came
out of hibernation from the challenges we faced these past two years, she has been simply everywhere with her great smile, making things happen. Enthusiastically!!!
Rookie of the Year awarded to Mark Johnson. If you’d ask Mark, it was a curious choice as to how an old guy could be a rookie! Nonetheless, it seems that after joining PCA three short years ago he has found an untapped happiness for all things Porsche. From writing for the Kassette, to managing a rebirth of the Club DE program, and now to a Board member for ’23-24, he won’t be considered a rookie any longer. Perhaps the best “award” of the evening wasn’t an award at all, but a substantial presentation. We mentioned a special guest. In attendance for the Gold Coast Holiday Party was Ms. Kim Carbo.
Kim is the Director of Community Development for the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation. Kim was introduced by Pres. Peter O and was then presented a BIG CHECK in the amount of $15,000.00 for the Foundation. The $15,000 given to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital came from proceeds raised at the GCR Golf Tournament earlier this year and from the Escape to the Cape in August. GCR, giving back!
Once dinner, dessert, awards, and presentations were completed it was time to dance! As another unexpected treat, the dancing began with a Hawaiian show offered by two lovely young gals from the Hypnotic Dance Studio. In great Hawaiian style, these ladies showed the assembled guests how to really shake it. We saw several traditional dances (no fire twirling; the resort wouldn’t allow it inside . . .

awwwww) before the limbo contest started.
We’ll leave the rest to the imagination, but there were photos taken by many during the evening. Of course, it would have been impossible to dance without music. Our DJ Adam of Original FX DJs played an incredible string of great music that got well over half of the attendees on the floor. While this was a holiday celebration, the music rivaled the best any big party family wedding had to offer. “We are Fam-A-Lee, I got all my Porsche Peeps with me . . . .”
Kudos to the organizing committee. The team who put together this incredible evening were Noemi Sanchez, Holiday Party Chair,, along with Cynthia Fluhart, Jay Klein, Christy Spangler, Peter Olliviere, and Nestor Sanchez. Additional assistance was provided by Ian Gerada, Carolyn Ditrichs, and Dottie Kidd.
Without a doubt, it was an exceptional evening, and perhaps the best Holiday Party in recent club history. Everyone in attendance received a great parting gift, a stemless wineglass with the
GCR PCA 60th Anniversary logo etched on the glass. Included with the wineglass was a window sticker for your Porsche featuring the anniversary logo and several Holiday (Hershey’s) Kisses!
Those in attendance will attest that if you were not there, you missed a great time! Season’s Greetings!

Oktoberfest Girl, She’s a Member The Rest of the Story
By Die Porsche Kassette editorial board
Membership Chairman, and Host of the recent Octoberfest Ian Gerada captured a great photo of “the beer girl” at our event at the Biergarten in Boca Raton. We suspect that Ian maybe didn’t realize (and neither did Editor Roger Fabel) that the beer girl was a GCR PCA member. Yes, Isabella Behar wife of David Behar is our Octoberfest Beer Girl!
David Behar, Isabella, and son David Isaac Behar attended the Octoberfest event. Isabella and son David were appropriately attired for our beer drinking Saturday. Our membership chair happened along on Isabella with her hands full, so to speak, and caught her in the penultimate act at the beer garden; delivering steins of the golden liquid. Isabella simply stated that to be completely accurate the steins should have been full. We apologize for the oversight to properly identify her beauty and talent in the article (Nov. 22, page 15). We’ve added a couple more photos of this wonderful family.

DE: TAKING IT TO THE TRACK
By Mark Johnson, DE Manager
Following a serious amount of information and fact gathering, we are substantially closer to having GCR members back on the track. Anticipation and enthusiasm seem to be growing!
With our first round of classroom training (“Intro to DE” or DE101) held in November and the first weekend of January 2023, we will move to DE102 next; that is “Car Inspection.” GCR will hold four events at two of our local shops, Foreign Affairs Motorwerks & Parkhaus1, in late January and early February to examine Porsche vehicles. The goal is to help our owners understand how their cars need to be properly inspected and prepared for track use. The two events at Foreign Affairs will be held on Tuesday evenings (January 24th / February 7th) with the
.
two examinations at Parkhaus1 on Saturday mornings (January 21st and February 11th). Register for these car exams, DE102, is at ClubRegistration.net
After we complete the car inspection process, we will hold a third classroom training, DE103, to be known as “A Day at the Track.” This class will examine anything and everything a DE driver will need to know to be ready for driving at a GCR DE event. That is, what to wear, what to bring, helmet requirement, and other practical information to prepare a driver for a track day.
With completion of the “100-level” course work, we expect to hold a DE201 course. This “200-level” class training will discuss actual driving technique. PCA Instructors
will discuss track layout, driving line, corner turn-in, corner apex, track-out points, as well as braking techniques and many subtle keys to driving safely at speed. This DE201 will be designed to provide a novice driver with the knowledge necessary to navigate a racetrack properly.
Finally, we are working with Homestead Miami Speedway to hold TWO (2) GCR DE track days in 2023. Dates have been discussed, and HMS is preparing contracts to send to the club. We will assess the contract and budget the event for Board approval. As soon as the dates and budget have been approved, we intend to announce the full reintroduction of the Gold Coast Region Driver Education program. Watch Club “enews” for announcements as well as ClubRegistration.net. Let’s go drivin’!!!

FINDING GOLD
ALBERT SALVADOR
Plays with Cars — Especially Porsche
This monthly gold nugget is about a fellow Porsche jockey who simply loves cars, owns a few, and plays well with others. Albert Salvador is his name, and he drives as many cars as he can get his hands on, but Porsche is his preferred marque.
Included in the current stable of Albert’s “collection” are three PCars. The first is a 2018 991.2 GT3 in Graphite Blue. This one was ordered new in April 2017 with an arrival of October 2017 (just a bit faster than today’s Order To Delivery/OTD timing). It is trimmed with PCCB Racing Yellow brake calipers, yellow seatbelts, and custom Thompson Blue Tartan inserts for the factory-optioned lightweight carbon fiber bucket seats. As a beautiful GT3, it is a bit understated in color, which makes it all the more attractive. The second is a 1977 911S Carrera RS/R Tribute in Slate
Grey (Schiefergrau #6801) that was acquired in March 2020. This RS/R Tribute is distinctive with its Carrera script along the rocker panels, and a very cool and period correct, custombuilt roof rack with Macacauba wood. The third is a 1989.5 Carrera 4 964 in Guards Red. It arrived at the end of 2020 with a mere 50K miles on the odometer and included every service and maintenance record since new. If you are counting, that is one modern water pumper, and two aircooled beasts. Each is impeccably maintained and driven often.
“Driven” is the key verb here. Albert can be found at many of the regional and national Porsche events. He is a huge fan of high-performance driving, and as a PCA member he has been participating at the 48 Hours at Sebring Advanced Solo event for the past three years (2020 through 2022).
He sees the great value offered by the 48 Hours event, driving at Sebring multiple times per day over the fourday weekend.
Involved with track days, Albert is also certified as a HDPE (high performance driver education) instructor for PCA. He’ll be teaching a few friends at Sebring and during the Suncoast Region PCA events throughout 2023. We expect he will also be supporting the budding Gold Coast Region DE events as they are announced and run during the coming year.
Beyond the track, Albert (AKA: @ bbossingg is his Instagram handle) can be located at one of the many regional drive events organized by various folks in the Southeast. There are quite a few non-PCA regional “drives,” often by invitation only, for air-cooled Porsches that he has also driven. These include the Fahren Rally hosted by PCar Talk, the Gator Crawl Rally in north Florida as organized by Keith Ennis, and the Rennsport Dragon Rally in western North Carolina with Josh Vandergriff. He has also driven in the Targa Carolina (TC) and the Blue Ridge Ruckus established by Charles Stanley, and the Deliverance Rally by Autohaus Social. Many of these events Albert has driven in multiple times since getting involved with his Porsche vehicles.
As for static display shows, he has participated in the Porsche Parade held in 2019 in Boca Raton, Luftgekühlt since 2019, WERKS Reunion in Amelia, and the Rennsport

Reunion (RR6 in 2018). He has already purchased his passes for the Rennsport Reunion “7,” the 2023 event. During WERKS, the ’77 RS/R Tribute hit the judged field, and while not winning a ribbon it was a fan favorite for its handsome looks.
Knowing Albert, it is always a guess as to which Porsche he will bring to an event. Over the past three DRT events in Miami, each individual Porsche was spotted at one point or another. Basically, here is a guy who truly believes that Porsches should be driven. Each vehicle offers its own style and driving pleasure. The aircooled models will hold their own on the many twisty road events, while the GT3 will do the same, and can hustle around a racetrack with speed, style, and grace. We watched Albert blow by us at the Homestead Miami Speedway over the Thanksgiving break. The 500+ HP in the GT3 gives him the ability to move quickly over the ground and encourage the slower drivers to offer point-by on a regular basis.
Albert is a single father with two children. His daughter, Arriana, is 23 and lives in Boston. She is a thirdyear law student at New England Law, Boston. His son Sebastian is 18 and attends Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and is majoring in Aeronautical Science.
Sebastian aspires to become an Airline Transport Pilot. He already has his private pilot’s license, and over 100 hours of logged flight time. When not at school Sebastian can be seen on a few of the rallies with his dad in any of the three PCars. As a pilot, he enjoys the handling and maneuvering of Porsche autos on the track and on the many twisting roads they encounter. With the seat time, he will soon take his Instrument Flight Rating (IFR) tests. If they could figure out how to
transport a Porsche or two via air, it would make it easier to get around the country for the many events they attend.
Albert was born in the Philippines, grew up in Philadelphia, and currently lives in Pembroke Pines. When asked what inspired him to get into automobiles, like many of us, Albert shares that was educated in the way of the performance vehicles by his father. Salvador Senior is a Porsche man himself.
Albert’s dad first acquired a new 1984 Porsche 944 in Guards Red. He traded that in for another new 1986 Black 944 Turbo, all as Albert was in his midteens. Eventually, the 944 Turbo was replaced with a customer pre-owned 1985 928S, also Black, in 1987. Each of these vehicle transactions occurred at Moore Motors Porsche & Audi in Philadelphia. The dealership no longer exists, but the memories remain. And talk about memories!
While growing up as a teenager, and upon receiving his driver’s license at 16 in 1985, Albert was able to drive the 944 Turbo with dad along in the
right seat. He was allowed to pilot the 928S later, without pops as chaperone. But there is more to the story of Albert’s teen driving exploits. As Albert tells it, “Up to this day, my dad was unaware that I used to occasionally sneak out with the 944 Turbo from the family garage. The garage was unattached, so a buddy of mine and I would quietly open the door, lifting it versus using the power door opener. We would push the Turbo out of the garage, down the driveway, and into the street for a short distance from the house. I’d jump in, fire it up. My friend would climb in, and we’d pull away for a teenage joyride!” Being teenagers, they would cruise the nearest arcade, the local mall, and the usual high school hangouts. Albert claims to have never been caught by his father. One can only imagine the repercussions if he did get caught, or what pop has to say when he reads his son’s story in the Kassette. “Fun, memorable times,” recalls Albert.
Albert Salvador is a car enthusiast. There are a total of eleven vehicles in the Salvador stable. Besides the three Porsches, there are four Fords,

Albert and Denise check out the Champion Pikes Peak Hillclimb Porsche
a Pontiac, and three Mercedes. The Pontiac is a 1969 GTO hardtop with manual transmission. The Fords are a ’22 Bronco Sasquatch, Area 51 (2dr manual), a ’20 Shelby GT500 in Race Red, a ’17 Shelby GT350R also in Race Red, and a ’17 Raptor in Avalanche Grey. The Mercedes acquired are a 1983 300TD Turbodiesel W123 wagon, a ’85 280CE Euro coupe, and a ’87 190E 2.3L-16V. Hitting south Florida’s longest running monthly Cars & Coffee event, Fuel Fed, Albert has the ability to bring a different vehicle for almost every (last) Sunday of each month.
He keeps four of his vehicles in the collection at the house so to have them readily available for drives and events that occur weekly. The balance of his vehicle collection is kept at a nearby storage facility.
If you want to consider Albert a “Porschtang” guy like our other friend Ruben Fuentes (Porsche RS America and two ‘60’s vintage Mustang convertibles), you could. But this bbossingg guy could also be known as a “Porschtangbenzboy.” Is that even a word? (Author note; claiming literary license to add a new and unique moniker to this lad.)
Albert has been a member of GCR PCA since 2015. He is a director for the clinical R&D division of a major
pharmaceutical company. The job is daunting, demanding, and rewarding. It also allows Albert to play with cars. Work hard and play hard. Playing hard at track days, getting to rallies, plenty of road trips, car shows and meets, and a few Thursday Night Options for dinner and drinks are the fun side of the “work hard” days.
Albert’s partner in his car passion is his girlfriend, Denise Schroedle. Denise is a whiz kid in finding vehicles for either of them to acquire. Pick a year, make, and model of a collector car of your desire and Ms. Denise will probably have one pulled up in 10-15 minutes for you to review. Well beyond her skills as a car finder, she is also a budding collector in her own right. As a Porschtang girl she owns two 2004 Ford Mustang SVT Cobras in Competition Orange, one a cabriolet and the other, a coupe. Albert notes that the Shelby GT500 and the 964 were acquisitions he made for Denise, so technically he suggests they are also “hers.”
If you are great with garage math, that is a full baker’s dozen (13) vehicles in the garage.
The favorite Porsche is the GT3/ GT3RS. He feels fortunate to have his but believes that there is room (one
day) to add to the collection with the 3RS should the opportunity present itself.
Keeping abreast of Porsche news, he attends as many major Porsche events as possible, is a frequent listener to PCA PCar talk shows, and many of the other Porsche related materials available via YouTube. Devouring PCar information is a fun habit. Perhaps almost as fun as driving them? In a word, NO!
Look for @bbossingg, Albert Salvador, at Sebring for the 48 Hours, at Homestead Miami, at a future GCR DE (he will instruct), and just about anywhere. He’ll be chatting up a few of the competitors at the 48 Hours this February to gain insight into Club Racing. Racing is the next logical step for Albert Salvador, and a bit of wheel-to-wheel, gentlemanly competition makes sense. Should the reader be an Instagram person, check out Albert’s IG page. He’s quite an avid storyteller.
The man is driven, and he has more than a few fun vehicles from which to choose, especially the Porsches. It’s a great combination.

48 Hours Volunteering . . . at Gold Coast Region
CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS
Article by Paul Raben, volunteer co-chair
The 48 Hours At Sebring Club race committee has begun making plans for the 2023 race to be held February 2 — 5.
It is time for all Gold Coast and Suncoast members to start planning how they can get involved. It is your opportunity to give back to your region and be involved with the most successful Club Race in PCA and help raise money for region activities and The Ronald McDonald House charity. Start making plans and reservations to make it a weekend of fun and excitement.
Where will you be? What will you be doing? What could you be doing that would possibly equal spending a weekend at world famous Sebring International Raceway with about 500 Porsches? Talk about a car show: this is the largest Porsche only racing event in the world – in fact, it is the largest single marque automobile racing event in the world! How could you miss it, especially when it is almost in your back yard!
Last year’s 29th annual event was a great success: we had over 450 participating Porsches. Now, its the time to start planning on how you can assist in this great event.
Make hotel reservations for the days you plan to attend. Pick from the available assignments listed below. This is a joint event consisting of friends from Gold Coast Region and Suncoast Region, the 30th edition will be even bigger and better. The 48 Hours at Sebring has grown into the largest PCA Club Race in the country. We expect to sign up over 350 racers and Advanced Solo drivers in the first two days of registration. This means we will need volunteers to help us run this huge event more than ever.
Why should you care?
If you are a PCA member that has been standing on the sidelines, wanting to become involved, but unsure of actually attending your first event, this is a perfect opportunity to see what PCA is all about, and meet a group of really nice people! You will be asked to work for a few hours at a job that is actually more fun than work, you get a nice T-Shirt, free lunch and free Friday night vendor showcase party. You also just might meet someone who just won the Daytona 24 Hour race, or past winners of Daytona 24, Sebring 12 Hour or Le Mans 24 Hour, or maybe someone who has won them all. For sure you will not find a better gathering
of Porsches and Porsche people anywhere.
The Club race raises thousands of dollars for Ronald McDonald House each year and provides the Gold Coast and Suncoast regions funds to support Socials, Drivers Ed and AutoX programs and help local charities.
What can you do to help?
At Track Registration
We need 4 or 5 people to assist with getting the driver’s checked in, this is an indoor sitting job that begins at 7:00 AM Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The first couple of hours are the busiest so you need to be a morning person.
The Grid
We have a lot of people returning from last year to work the grid, but we still need a few more for each day. You need to be in good shape as it entails a lot of standing and walking. Your primary responsibilities are.
1. Helping get each car in its assigned spot based on information on a timing sheet provided by Timing & Scoring.
2. Doing a quick check of the car to make sure that it is not dripping any liquids, engine & trunk lids are closed and secured.
3. Checking the driver to ensure
22 Die Porsche Kassette | Jan 2023
that he or she is buckled in, with helmet on and secure.
4. Direct traffic at several locations to assist racers to the grid or back to their paddock area after each run..
Timing and Scoring
We need about 5 volunteers each day. You will assist the stewards in identifying the cars as they go past the start/finish line to verify that their timing equipment is working properly. You will also assist in the preparation of the timing sheets for distribution to the grid. This is a nice comfortable inside job but it is the heart beat of the race.
Tech and Scales
We need volunteers each day to help check the Advanced Solo group cars for tire pressure, Torque lug nuts and check helmets, brake lights. Thursday and Friday are the busiest days for tech. Scales are open Friday through Sunday. The race cars are weighed on the scales to make sure they are the proper weight for their car and class. Volunteers are needed to push the cars on the scales.
The Corners
We need volunteers to assist the SCCA corner-workers at each corner. This is truly where the action is! Working the corners is a fun and action packed assignment. Each corner throughout the track is manned by 1-2 professional
SCCA corner workers. For each corner, we assign a maximum of 1 volunteers to assist the SCCA corner workers. We have many volunteers who return each year and request a specific corner or corner worker. It’s amazing how much you can learn while watching skilled drivers go through a corner lap after lap. There is no better way to get closer to the action unless you are actually driving!!
The responsibilities for the corner are:
1.You are an extra set of eyes and ears for the SCCA corner worker, helping observe the activities on the track;
2.In the event of an incident the corner worker may ask you to hold or wave the appropriate flag.
3. You may be asked to assist with any reporting of an on track incident.
Notes.
At no time would you go over the wall!
Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required.
Please do not wear colors that would be confused as a flag, for example red or yellow. White or the 48 Hour t-shirt are perfect.
Pit Marshalls
This is a Sunday-only job which starts around 10:00 AM with a meeting with the race steward. This position is needed during the
Enduro. Each driver is required to make a 5 minute pit stop during the each Enduro. We need at least 12 people to observe the pit stops. The responsibilities for Pit marshals are,
1.Observe and report to PCA scrutinizer any spilled fuel etc.
2.Observe and report any crew member over the wall without proper equipment
3.Make sure that the maximum number of crew over the wall is not exceeded.
4.Enforce all rules as instructed by PCA Scrutinizers. Notes.
Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required.
Training will be provided by PCA officials.
Miscellaneous Positions.
We need other volunteers to help with the Friday and Saturday night activities. This is where we raise the most money for the charities. We also have positions avalible in traffic control. Lastly we need a few other volunteers to take on whatever task that may come up.

TECHNICAL WIZZARDRY
Road trip to BWR III (Part Two)
continued from last month
Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
The scenery was absolutely stunning! The drive was unbearable! Even I was uncomfortable—and I’m used to track set-ups for the suspension.
minute information is disseminated and any issues get resolved.
everyone all the information they need to be safe and enjoy the rest of the day on the Ocean City Boardwalk and seashore.
But the torture was over (for a day or so) and now we’d get to enjoy the Boardwalk Reunion! The Boardwalk Reunion is one of the best-organized Porsche events I have attended (and I’ve been to quite a few). The organizers, Ellen Beck and Bob Gutjahr, work with an army of welltrained volunteers that make the event run like clockwork. Friday evening is the Volunteer reunion where last-
Saturday is when the actual event takes place. From very early on, you can see Porsches of all ages and models being prepped as if for a Concours d’Elegance at the parking lot of the main hotel, The Flanders. The cars are to be marshaled at the Municipal Airport where Ocean City, NJ Police are standing by to lead the caravan of cars through some city streets and then onto the Boardwalk, but that won’t happen till 11:30AM. Cars start filling up the section of the airport designated as our grid. Rows and rows of beautiful examples of Porsche design and engineering are now lining up and getting ready. Still, some give it another buffing, check the chrome, and make sure that the glass is perfect. Others stroll up and down the rows of cars, meeting new friends and catching up with old ones. Local participants from NY, PA, MD, DE, NJ, and other nearby states start arriving at the airport as well but it all moves in a very coordinated way and each car gets parked quickly and efficiently.
Each participant then goes to the registration table to get their goodie bag and credentials for the Boardwalk. As we get closer to 11:00 AM, our fearless leader, Bob, climbs on top of the logistics truck and holds a full drivers’ meeting, giving
The “drivers, start your engines” command is given, and a pace car takes the first 50 arrivals behind him in single file, escorted by an Ocean City Police SUV. Immediately after the 50th Porsche, a second pace car follows, pulling along another line of 50 more Porsches, and this goes on until pace car #7 takes with him the last group. All totaling 354 Porsches!
The parade of 350+ Porsches through the streets of Ocean City is incredible. Police are on the route to make sure that the long line gets through with no issues. Little kids on street corners are in awe as they wave to the neverending line of cool cars! One of them just kept yelling to every driver: “Cool car, Mister!” Once on the Boardwalk the cars are organized in two lines down the center of the boards and the two lines go from 6th Street all the way down to 14th Street.

After everyone parks their cars (around noon) we get to mingle with the crowd, answer questions, shop, have lunch or attend one of three Tech Sessions held at the Music Pier Auditorium right next to the featured Speedsters and Roadsters which were highlighted this year.
I was very honored to have been asked back for the third time as a presenter. My topic for 2022 was: “TOP 10 DON’Ts with your Porsche”. The second session was by John Paterek titled, “An American Roadster,” and the third one by Dom Milano was “Photographing your Porsche.”
Drivers Meeting
The cars stayed on the Boardwalk until 4:00 PM when we carefully drove off the boards and headed back to our respective hotels. I was staying at the Flanders Hotel where the Saturday Night Social and Dinner was held. Great dinner with friends at the perfect venue for this event, it was a truly enjoyable way to cap off the Reunion.
Next year’s Boardwalk Reunion IV will be held on October 13, 2023; number V will take place on October 19, 2024, and number VI on October 18, 2025. Plan ahead!
After a long day, my wife and I had a good night’s rest, because we knew what was ahead of us. When we were packing the car on Sunday morning, we agreed to do the return trip in just two legs. On Sunday we drove 12 hours to Florence, SC mostly on I-95, passing through the heavy traffic of Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC.
The ride was awful. The suspension I think got worse. It really felt as if instead of shock absorbers the car had solid links with zero rebound and zero damping. Those 12 hours were exhausting and we knew that after that we still had another 7 to 10 hours (depending on traffic) until we got back home. We did make it back in one piece . . . shaken, not stirred. After one week since my car has been parked I’ve decided that this suspension MUST go! I’m looking now for a new set of the same Bilstein PSS9s and the H&R Coil-overs will be returned.
It’ll take a lot of sweet-talking to get my wife back in the Boxster for another extended trip, but I’ll convince her again.
BTW, now the odometer reads 304,400 miles (and counting).

George Nunez submitted this photo of his son, Paul’s, 2005 Carrera
Editor
Taking the long way from Ann Arbor to Los Angeles for a new job, Paul picked up George at the Denver, CO airport. They took the back roads off the interstate from Denver south and west, then to U.S. 64 west from Four Corners, through Taos, NM, passing through Carson National Forest. Heading south, they enjoyed stops at Goosenecks National Park, Mexican Hat and at the spectacular Monument Valley where this photo was taken. They continued west, past the south rim of the Grand Canyon, and through Williams, AZ along Route 66.
George said that “it is a great drive with sweeping curves and reaching over 10k feet. His (Paul’s) 997 coupe is a great road trip car, comfortable cruising at 3000 rpm at 80mph and still getting 27mpg.”
Here in the GCR, George drives a 1987 Carrera that was driven on a road trip in 2016 with his other son and was featured in a previous Kassette article.
This image captures the spirit of adventure and the roads yet to be traveled. Just like the new year, bringing a fresh start when new and eye-opening experiences await.
