Biology (33GB) Is teaching Biology for me? What can be more exciting than learning about ourselves as organisms, our physiology, our genetics, our role in the world and the role and functioning of other organisms including plants? The answer is sharing this love of Biology with students who are inquisitive and have a thirst for knowledge as well as the opportunity to inspire the Biologists of the future. Biology is a subject full of wonder of awe that surrounds us all of the time and being in a classroom sharing this passion for your subject is an absolute privilege.
What will I study? Throughout the course you will learn how to take your own knowledge and be able to deliver it to students in effective lessons. You will be taught, and shown, how to interpret the relevant curriculum to plan lessons, how to manage behaviour, carry out practical work safely, plan assessments, monitor progress and support students of all abilities. This will all be delivered by staff who are currently employed as teachers in schools and have an up-to-date knowledge of relevant pedagogy.
How can I prepare? Ensure that your knowledge of Biology is up-to-date, looking at the relevant exam board specifications will help you to identify the topic areas taught. Also ensure that your knowledge of Chemistry and Physics are also up to date as Science teachers are expected to be able to teach all 3 Sciences. Having an awareness of Science in the news is also recommended as well as trying to spend some time in school observing Science lessons.
