Your Guide to Recreation, Fun & Fitness

Fall 2021

Message From The Director

Greetings! Thank you for connecting with our virtual Leisure Magazine—Prince William County’s go-to source for all things recreation. Albert Camus wrote, autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower. Indeed, there is no better place to experience the wondrous beauty of fall than in our 5,000-acre mosaic of parks, trails, and historic sites. If the crisp air beckons you outside, plan a bike ride along the new greenway trail at the Occoquan Wildlife Refuge or hike the longest boardwalk in the region at Neabsco Regional Park. Take in 18 holes at the newly renovated Forest Greens Golf Course or tour the historic Brentstville Jail Exhibit to learn about the early days of Prince William County. In addition to 80 parks and 50 miles of trail, we offer hundreds of fitness and instructional classes for all ages and abilities, including adaptive programs such as Come On, Get Happy! on October 2nd at Silver Lake Park. Learn to Kayak on the Occoquan Reservoir at Lake Ridge Park on September 18th or hone your skills at identifying songbirds on November 13th the Pat White Community Center. If you are looking for a nature-based pre-school where mud and bugs are celebrated, consider the Grō program at Long Park, a curriculum that has been lauded by Virginia First Lady, Pam Northam. We also offer other state-licensed preschool programs at Chinn and Sharron Baucom/Dale City Aquatic and Fitness Centers and Veterans Memorial Park & Community Center. Register now while spots are still available! The fall season is also brimming with special events such as the Brentsville Bluegrass Concert Series (August 14th, September 11th and October 9th), The First Tee® Golf Tournament at Forest Greens Golf Course on October 11th, the Kids for Kids Triathlon at Chinn Aquatic and Fitness Center on September 19th, and Arts Alive! on September 12th at the Hylton Performing Arts Center. And don’t forget to shop the Dale City Farmer’s Market on Sunday mornings for a wide selection of artisan goods and the freshest produce in Prince William County: www.dalecitymarket.org. I am grateful you chose Prince William County for your recreation needs and wish you and your family a vibrant fall season. Our passionate staff is committed to ensuring you have an exceptional experience. Please let us know how we’re doing and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. May you strive to be your best self with Prince William County Parks, Recreation & Tourism as your partner!

Fix-It events provide members of the community the opportunity to bring salvageable items for repair and subsequent reuse. Along with recycling, repair and reuse practices help conserve landfill space and enhance the quality of our environment. The hosts are looking for volunteers in the community with skills to repair things like jewelry, clothing, small furniture and appliances, bicycles, shoes, umbrellas, glasses, ceramics, and other portable items. Fixers will be offered a stipend to cover their time and the materials they may provide. If you would like to offer your skills at this year’s Fix-It Fair event, please send an email to PWCRecyles@pwcgov.org with your name, phone, and repair specialties.

Step back over 150 years to see how soldiers and civilians celebrated Christmas time during the Civil War. Walk through camps by candlelight and interact with soldiers to learn about Christmas customs of the past. Get your picture taken with a Civil War Santa and have some hot cider as you enjoy a musical performance by the Brentsville District High School Choir at 7p.m. After the concert join them outside around the campfire and sing along!

In the nearly 200-year history of the community of Brentsville, many cemeteries have sprung up in the area. Unfortunately, some of these burial grounds are now lost to history. However, others are still marked today. Join local historians for a special walking tour of historic Brentsville as we explore some of these little-known spots.
