The launch of the University’s Strategy 2030 set out our ambition to provide our students with a sense of purpose and the competencies to shape their own lives and to contribute to the lives of others We want to ensure our students have the skills to work globally, but the opportunity to build a career locally, meeting the needs of the economy in key sector areas and supporting the growth of the knowledge based economy in Northern Ireland. As we emerge from a time of unique global crisis, the Careers, Employability and Skills team at Queen’s have been working on how we can realise this ambition as we recover from the pandemic and begin a new era in our purpose built state of the art Student Centre. With a renewed vision to shape the development of future ready graduates, we are proud to launch our Future Ready Roadmap Developed through engagement with Queen’s staff, students and employers, it's designed to help students progress their employability throughout their time at Queen’s. As the doors of One Elmwood open, we are encouraged by the enormous scope of possibilities and we are focussed on working in partnership with our network to help students identify their strengths, recognise their potential and make an informed choice about their future. Our hope is that every student is encouraged to try new things, meet new people and build skills and experience during their time at Queen’s Our overriding aim will be to equip our students and graduates with the skills they need to be future ready.

Live experiences offers the chance to experience day to day office life on a workplace visit. Real world experience

Careers Fairs

Through our Real World Projects, students get an opportunity to work with an employer on a specific work project for 100 hours and receive a bursary They are designed for students in courses under represented in the labour market. Our internship programme enables students to work in local SMEs on a specific project for 8 weeks and receive a salary.

We coordinate dedicated employer events held during the academic year. These provide an opportunity for students to talk directly to employers to understand the skills recruiters are looking for and to gain exposure to the career options available to them

Embedded School activity

Our Careers Fairs are an opportunity for employers from all industries to talk to our students about graduate, placement, and work experience opportunities. We encourage all our students to attend the fairs to find out about the options available to them.

We source, brief and facilitate embedded School activities across the University, ranging from business games and challenges to employer led skills and employability sessions

Work Shadowing Opportunities

Work Shadowing is a great way to try a career on for size to see if it fits Shadowing a professional can help bring a job to life for a student. We facilitate work shadowing experiences offering students access to a wide range of industry areas. Our students get the opportunity to spend a day in a workplace to gain an understanding of different industries that they may be interested in or perhaps hadn’t thought of. Market intelligence We gather market intelligence from employers to focus student skills development activity Working directly with employers to gain insights into the personal attributes and workplace skills required, we aim to ensure that this is reflected in our development activity with a strong focus on transferable skills and work related learning We share this information with staff in Schools and help shape employer led activities in Schools. Widening Participation We operate a student mentoring programme annually, which is available for all students from a Widening Participation background. We invite industry employers to act as mentors who support, advise and guide students across a range of discussion areas. The programme is designed to help talented University students from underrepresented groups succeed in their early careers.

UR DATA We are committed to using a data-driven approach to understand and better support our students. We work with colleagues at School and Faculty level to review relevant qualitative data and qualitative feedback comments and use this to make joint decisions regarding targeting of appropriate interventions and to inform the continuous improvement of the student experience at Queen’s. Student surveys Our Business Operations team are working to enhance the student experience at Queen’s by managing and analysing institution wide surveys including the Graduate Outcomes survey, The National Student Survey, the 1st and 2nd Year Experience Survey and the Postgraduate Taught and Postgraduate Research Experience Surveys. Using comparative year on year analysis, alongside national and international benchmarking, we use survey data to develop an Institution wide understanding of the experience of groups of students and inform careers service provision. 22

Careers registration data During registration, all students are asked to complete two Careers focused questions designed to gather relevant data on Careers experience and to track student experiences as they progress through Queen’s We use this data to inform a targeted approach to student engagement and service provision. Integrated systems We provide quality integrated systems including MyFuture (see page 28) to promote student and employer engagement and facilitate the development of a data driven approach across the Careers Service.

From trips to China and the USA to employer led challenges, there are so many fun and rewarding activities for students to get involved in on campus Students can complete an activity (or more than one activity), at any time, fitting them in alongside their studies and tracking their Higher Education Achievement Record (HEAR) progress via QSIS Taking part in the award is free of charge, (although some activities might have costs involved), and allows students to add valuable skills and experience to their CV all while having fun, making new friends or travelling abroad

Resources and quicklinks Queen’s staff have the opportunity to use the new Resources & Quicklinks area in MyFuture to connect Queen’s students to any of the following: • A tailored Step by Step pathway for placement management and support or an extra curricular programme • A recommended, licensed personal development resource e.g. Psychometric Tests

• Software to host alumni, employer, or other external mentoring or networking programme Run practice or actual video interviews

Employers can advertise opportunities for free through MyFuture, and self manage their profile, allowing them to build a brand presence and successfully promote graduate roles, internships and placements Employers can also register for careers fairs and events and virtually recruit on campus. Through MyFuture, we can also facilitate advertising of employer workshops to relevant student cohorts (on campus and virtual).

Targeted emails

Employers can ensure maximum exposure to relevant student groups by sending targeted emails through MyFuture. They can opt to target students by year and School to increase applications for current roles or to boost attendance at your campus event. Please note that a fee is charged for this additional service
