“For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me; when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord. – Jeremiah 29:11-14
Frugal Family Fun Back to school excitement By Jennifer Dumke
T
he summer season is winding down, the air develops a slight chill and before you know it, big yellow buses will blend with the changing leaves. Yes, it’s back to school. As parents celebrate their newfound freedom, the task of getting your children ready for the first day can be a challenge and sometimes daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. There are many ways to create excitement for the first day of school without breaking the piggy bank. FIRST DAY TRADITION One fun and thrifty way to add a little pizzazz to the first day of school is to create some simple traditions that are both fun for parents and kids. Aside from the obligatory photo that swiftly gets posted to every social media facet, try a new take on the simple things like cooking a special breakfast, leave a loving note in their lunch box or binder and select their attire ahead of time and make sure to include their input in what they don on the day. By creating these simple and inexpensive traditions, your child will surely have a memorable send-off. BARGAIN BIN Most homes with children are filled with pens, pencils, erasers, you name it. If you have extra supplies on hand, why not go supply shopping in your own home? You will be surprised to see how many things can be carried over from year to year. For those who need special supplies or need to purchase new, it’s best to start early so you can get in on sales and discounts. A number of stores run “offseason” sales on common school supplies so be sure to keep an eye out throughout the summer. Hint: make sure you remember where you store them.
14
SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2021
As long as you’re bargain hunting for supplies, why not add clothes to the list? Get some great deals on cold weather close-out sales or buy the basics when the price drops. For newer parents or those with multiple children varying in age, make sure to take growth into account. Purchase items with elastic waistbands and cuffs that can be rolled to stretch their use. Don’t forget to include your little ones. Have some frugal fun picking out the items by letting them decide on some of the simple things like screen print designs and color. Once they get home, do a mini fashion show to build their excitement and confidence. WANDERLUST-LESS The summer season flies by fast. Planning that family vacation or outing can often be brushed aside. Plan a last-minute venture that’s easy, fast and best of all, inexpensive. Get in on the timeless tradition of a simple camping trip. The cooler air is perfect for fire pits and sleeping outdoors. If you have extra miles or the funds to fly, be on the look-out for special vacation packages where lodging and airfare are bundled. Keep your trip simple by ensuring your room contains a small kitchen and stock it with healthy, kid-friendly foods that are both convenient and less expensive than sit-down restaurants and even fast food. The most important thing to remember to keep back to school fun and frugal for the entire family is the simple act of caring. Show your children how special they are by simply letting them make some clothing decisions, cook a special breakfast, take their photo or celebrate the start of school with a weekend family adventure. After all, it’s often the little things that mean the most. n

Fall in Love with Quilting An event for all quilters By Jill Funke | Photos courtesy of the Sioux Falls Quilters' Guild
Q
uilting has seen an upsurge in recent years. For example, in Sioux Falls, approximately 135 quilting enthusiasts belong to the Sioux Falls Quilters’ Guild. Organized in 1986, the group welcomes all quilters, experienced or novice. It encourages a broader appreciation of quilting by raising and maintaining design standards, individual ideas, and expression, while keeping interest alive by promoting local quilting activities. This year, the theme of the guild’s annual quilt show is “Fall in Love with Quilting,” and it features over 300 amazing quilts crafted by guild members. Scheduled from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm on Saturday, October 9, 2021, and 11:00 am to 4:00 pm on Sunday, October 10 at the Sioux Falls Convention Center, the event also offers a luncheon/trunk show and quilting class presented by Nancy McNally. According to guild member and co-chairman of the quilt show committee Cheryl Nelson, “This

is a perfect place to get inspired about doing your first quilt project or finding a new quilting challenge for the seasoned quilter.” Tickets are $7.00 and are available at the Convention Center during the show hours only. In keeping with the show theme, Nelson explains the purpose of the event by saying, “We want to share the art of quilting with quilters and non-quilters alike and inspire them to expand their knowledge and appreciation of the art of quilting. Many people think of the utility quilts that were made by their grandmothers when they think of quilting.” She continues, “Quilting has expanded into a true art form.” Vendors at the show include regional quilt shops that will present the newest quilt fabrics, wools, and heirloom stitching supplies. In addition, industry leader Fonder Sewing will display an array of sewing, embroidery, and long-arm machines for
attendees to use and practice learning the latest features. Nelson feels that those who attend the event will be inspired by the vendors sharing their quilting ideas and supplies. She says, “This is much like a quilter’s extravaganza!” In addition to the vendors and activities planned, a silent auction benefiting the Veterans Appreciation Fund will feature items made and donated by guild members. With the wide variety of workshops, vendors, and beautiful quilts displayed at the show, Nelson says, “There will be something for everyone, traditional and modern sewers, first-time quilters, younger quilters, artists, and crafters.” n
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9 8:30 am – 5:30 pm (break from 11:30 am – 2:30 pm) – “Happy New Year” pattern class featuring Nancy McNally. Class fee: $65. 12:00 pm – Nancy McNally Trunk Show and Luncheon. Tickets for the luncheon are $25.00 and must be purchased by October 1, 2021. FREE mini-workshops offering the opportunity for beginners and seasoned quilters to learn new techniques and tricks.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 10 2:00 pm – drawing for the raffle quilt designed by Nancy McNally and created by guild members. (Tickets will be available at the show for $2 each or three for $5.00) FREE mini-workshops offering the opportunity for beginners and seasoned quilters to learn new techniques and tricks. siouxfallsquiltersguild.com

Shelly Munneke & Deb Kempema
30 years as business owners; 30 years as friends By Virginia Olson | Photo by Faith Noelle Photography
S
helly Munneke and Deb Kempema believe 30 is one special number. Both women have been business owners in Rock Valley, Iowa for 30 years. Even more special, the two have been friends for 30 years. Shelly is the owner of Economy Shop – a consignment store that offers quality, brand-name clothing for the entire family. Deb owns First Impressions – a one-stop shop for decorating needs, paint, flooring, furniture and accessories. The two business owners met through the Rock Valley Chamber. It was there the friendship took hold. Looking back, both feel their longstanding friendship has been a positive for their personal and professional lives and the reason behind their business growth. “Shelly and I met as young business owners 30 years ago when we worked closely together at Chamber promotions,” says Deb. “We found we enjoyed talking to one another about our businesses and soon discovered we have such similar professional lives. Our friendship grew from there.” “Deb and I also discovered that we shared common business goals,” says Shelly. “We both had visions and ambitions and knew the other understood what that meant. We would listen to one another and offer suggestions, and it was always nice to be able to 'bounce’ ideas off one another.”
18
SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2021
Shelly also says their long-time friendship has always been a real morale booster. “We realized our friendship not only supported each of us from a business standpoint, but also supported each of us personally. It was Deb who reminded me of my strengths and my successes when I have felt discouraged.” Today Shelly and Deb believe this mutual support has been a key factor in both their lives. “We are true friends who have provided incentives for one another to work harder and more efficiently,” says Shelly. “Our businesses have grown and expanded. Deb is now in her 5th location and I am in my 3rd.” “Besides our business relationship, Shelly and I have a lot in common. We both have three children and both of us from Rock Valley,” says Deb. Now as 30-year business owners, Deb and Shelly offer advice to other women who own a small business encouraging them to take the risk, try new things and don’t be afraid of change. “Shelly and I realized a long time ago that surrounding ourselves with people who are a positive influence and inspire us is so important,” says Deb. “We have always been there for each other. Both of us attest that a good friend is nice to have not only for professional growth but as a personal connection as well.” n

A FAMILY FRIENDLY CULTURE How one company sets the example for creating the right culture According to Forbes, in today’s work atmosphere a well-defined, inclusive, and positive corporate culture is the glue that binds an organization and its employees. In this current post pandemic labor market, culture has never been more important than it is right now. This is why companies like Schulte Subaru that prioritize creating a positive environment for their employees are thriving and growing post pandemic. “Schulte Subaru is all about family and not just figuratively, we are talking literally,” shares Mike Schulte. “We employ over 17 different sets of employees that are related and can be found throughout all of the departments; sales, service, body shop, parts, concierge and restoration.” “We have everything from husbands and wives, fathers and sons, along with daughters, uncles and even cousins.” So how did it come to pass that Schulte Subaru employs a multitude of family members? It simply goes back to their employee centric culture they have created. Schulte Subaru strives to promote from within giving their employees the opportunity to grow with the company. This employment development strategy leads to happy employees that recruit their family and friends to apply when a position opens. In addition to promoting from within, they also offer the benefits todays employees are looking for; team environment with autonomy, balance between work and home life, and a competitive compensation and benefit package. Thus, creating an employee culture that is made up of friends and family that support each other, look out for one another, and hold each other accountable. In short, they act like family! Hiring family members might seem like a good idea, but some companies fear it could lead to challenging and uncomfortable situations or even potentially hurt relationships, so they write company policies that discourage this practice. The way Schulte Subaru has been able to overcome this potential hiring challenge is by implementing a strong hiring process and creating an environment that promotes positive behavior

fter the minimal lip gloss trends of the late 2000s and early 2010s, makeup has been on the upswing when it comes to reviving the bright statements made whether we’re talking or not: Bold and beautiful lips. Slowly but surely, we’ve been making our way back around to big and flashy, though not always shiny. Take a chance on a striking lip color from trends that are brazenly putting themselves out there this fall season. THE CLASSIC RED Old Hollywood is calling, and they want you to be the new queen of glam. Bright and soft reds made more supple by slightly overlining your lips, giving a fuller and more "Marilyn" look. Remember when flashing a brilliant red, keep the rest of your makeup on the minimal side. A subtle wing for eyeliner and a softer brow will let your lips do the talking. BRIGHT PINKS, FLASHY FUCHSIAS We haven’t seen bright pink as a trend since the early 2000s, and if you remember the glamorous days of Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, you’ll recall that pink never truly goes out of style. Bring it back with an unexpected flash of fuchsia, it’s perfectly on trend, and playful as ever. PEACHES & ORANGES Autumn is the sunset of the year. Bring out those beautiful hues with a peaceful and warm peach or orange. While peach is more subtle, it’s still a bold choice especially when paired with monochromatic and muted colors of fall fashion. Add a splash of color with a melon or floral orange, keeping it bold and deep. It always feels like a risk adding bright colors to our everyday makeup palette, but as we bring the summer months to a close and step into fall, we want to carry some of that summer fun with us by creating bold, beautiful, bright, and exciting statement-making lips! n

all is upon us, and it’s time to celebrate the sunset of the year with fashion options. We’ve been heated up for a while, and variety might be difficult to come by as it begins to cool down. Step into autumn with this list of must-haves for fall fashion that will allow you to mix and match essentials for the perfect autumn look for you! GO-TO DENIM – Skinny jeans are considered a staple at this point, and while we’re keeping those in our sights, we’re also trending the beloved wide-legged jeans once again. Whether you belt or cuff, a few different options definitely deserve a place in your wardrobe. Lots of denim in a variety of washes, pair perfectly with your favorite shirts and layers. CLASSIC WHITE TEE – With mornings and evenings being cool and afternoons still sometimes warm, layering is of utmost importance in fall. Fashion has brought back the classic white tee-shirt as a trendy must-have. Put it under your favorite overwear, layer with a cardigan or scarf, and tuck it into your high waisted denim favorites. This single item will make it easy to put together a wide variety of choice outfits. KNITWEAR – We love soft, and we love warm! Whether it be a cardigan or a pullover sweater, we’re looking at long, wide, and comfortable. A deeper neckline will allow the tee or tank you pair underneath to pop out, giving you the chance to layer colors, textures, and patterns perfectly. JACKETS – Remember grunge? Remember punk? It’s time to put a modern spin on these classic looks by bringing back leather and denim jackets. 2021 is the year to make an investment. You will not regret purchasing something warm, classic, and long-lasting. Take the plunge and spin out a little rebel on the side: leather and denim jackets are the perfect choice for going bold. BLACK SLIP DRESS – Need something different under your layers? A black silken or satin slip dress is the perfect break from the tees and jeans you’ll be rocking most days of the week. A classic from the 90’s, the black slip dress will pair well with a cozy sweater or a playful denim jacket. Keep it classy, keep it chic. Of course, we can’t forget the accessories: a black or brown belt to go with anything and everything, tortoiseshell sunglasses, and pendant necklaces are all must-haves on top of everything we listed above. Step out on the streets in chic variety, putting your unique style choices together in ways that gets the spotlight focused on you! n

MASTERING YOUR MONEY A New Perspective.
Jill Mollner, MBA, CFP®, Wealth Advisor
While gender doesn’t determine the quality of financial advice, women and men often relate to and manage money differently. A few things to consider when it comes to working with your wealth advisor: OPEN COMMUNICATION GOES BOTH WAYS A well-designed plan needs to be based on your true situation and built around the right decisions for your family, not just the right decisions for your money. It’s important that you feel comfortable sharing personal details like family dynamics and health concerns. And, your advisor needs the personal skills to help you set priorities, keep you focused on your goals, and give you her opinion even when you might not want to hear it. MONEY AND FINANCIAL DECISIONS ARE EMOTIONAL Emotions can drive your decisions and cloud your better judgment. Family dynamics add another element of confusion. Your advisor isn’t as emotionally entangled in your “stuff” and is more likely to see your case in a more balanced way. RELATIONSHIPS ARE LONG-TERM Although you may not need comprehensive services today, you’re building a relationship that will likely last a lifetime. Some financial advisors manage investments but don’t provide much financial planning. Some work primarily with investors who won’t retire for years. Still others specialize in employer-sponsored plans. You’ll appreciate services like tax-reduction strategies, estate planning, or retirement income distribution planning throughout the phases of your life. TIME IS VALUABLE A well-educated, experienced wealth advisor has spent thousands of hours learning to understand, analyze and manage personal finance issues. Compare that to the time and energy you can devote on top of your career, family, and life commitments. Working with a wealth advisor gives you the freedom to spend time on things you enjoy, just as you might hire a house-cleaner or gardener. PLANNING FOR “WHAT IF?” Even if you think that no one can manage your family’s assets more efficiently than you, what will happen if you get sick and can’t do it? Does your spouse have the time or interest to take it over? Should something happen to you, transitioning the management of your financial portfolio can be far easier if you already partner with a wealth advisor. A VALUABLE RESOURCE Even if you need detailed advice from several different specialists a lawyer to discuss how much liability you need to insure against, a certified public accountant to work on your taxes, or an estate planner to update your trust documents - your financial advisor can refer you to professionals working with clients who have similar levels of assets and concerns as you. And, they can work with those professionals to make sure all areas are working together in your best interest.

2 Tools + 2 Ways = 4 Healthy Eating Hacks for Fall Story & photos by Ashley Sornsin
A
busy and packed fall schedule often leaves little time for good intentions of eating healthy. There are a few easy hacks that will save you time and energy, while keeping you and your family eating well. These hacks will help you prep easy, nutritious meals and snacks so you’re prepared with meals for the week. All you need are a couple common kitchen tools to get started! Sheet pans don’t get enough credit when it comes to making quick and healthy meals. Often times they’re credited with long and complicated meals. However, the sheet pan is one of the most under utilized tool in the kitchen for quick, easy meals. Breakfast is a great time to use a sheet pan. Using a sheet pan for breakfast will save you time and energy, even when it comes to cleanup. Sheet pan pancakes are a great way to make several servings of pancakes in just 15 minutes. By using a high protein pancake batter and topping with fruit and nuts, you’ll have a bounty meal in just minutes. Using parchment paper to line the pan, makes cleanup a breeze! Sheet pan dinners, which also happen to make delicious lunch leftovers, are a quick and easy way to prepare an entire meal for the whole family (or for your own meal prep for the entire week). Use in season fall produce which will provide a ton of nutrition and flavor. Think sweet potatoes or squash, zucchini, green beans, peppers and tomatoes, cut into similar sized pieces and then add a plant-based protein like canned chickpeas or a lean meat like fish or chicken to the sheet pan. The entire meal will cook in about 30 minutes! Always line the pan with foil, so cleanup is super simple, saving you time and energy! Mason jars are a tried and true storage container and multipurpose kitchen tool. Their uses are unlimited, they are perfect for easy

meal prep and the perfect container for on-the-go lifestyles. Overnight oats are a popular breakfast or snack that can be prepared in bulk, just grab jars for each day of the week and prepare all at the same time! This is something not only you can make, but your whole family can customize their own! Add oatmeal, a dairy free milk, plantbased protein powder (if you want a protein boost) and mix-ins like seasonal fruit (raspberries or apples are great) and nut/seed butter to a jar. Give each a shake to combine, then keep stored in the fridge for busy mornings, so you can grab-and-go! They also make a great lunch box item or the perfect after school snack that’s not only healthy but easy and fun to make and eat! Salad jars are a super simple way to prepare your entire weeks worth of lunches at one time. Get creative with the food you use and look for in season produce. Look beyond just seasonal vegetables, you can even add fruit! One tip when making in advance for the week to preserve freshness, choose plant-based toppings like beans or nuts (like the walnut tacos pictured), as these will keep well and don’t require cooking to save you time. Layer in your spinach or lettuce, add your toppings (veggies, fruit, beans, nuts/seeds, dairy-free cheese) and salad dressing (or even salsa) and keep refrigerated for the week. You’ll have the whole week ready in just a few minutes. When it comes time to eat, shake it up and eat out of the jar or pour into a bowl. It’s that easy! No question that fall is a busy time of year, but your healthy eating doesn’t have to suffer. Using these two tools, two ways, will provide an entire weeks worth of healthy meals that you and your whole family can enjoy. Saving you time and energy in the kitchen while creating container meals, means you’ll be prepared to continue a successful and healthy lifestyle that you can maintain this season and beyond! n

In the Kitchen: Decorating with Fresh Produce By Lisa Marie Blair
F
all is a favorite time of year for many and bringing nature’s bounty indoors is a wonderful way to embrace the season. Decorating with fresh produce is both economical and environmentally friendly. The large variety of fresh produce can also add texture and color to your kitchen. Bringing the outdoors in, is a simple way to fall into the autumn season.
pumpkins. Be sure to leave the adorable little pumpkin stems on. Dirt and mold picked up from the field will shorten their display lifespan so be sure to give these little guys a bath in your kitchen sink. Simply add 2 Tablespoons of bleach, a squirt of dish soap per gallon of water, soak for 10 minutes, and pat dry. These small steps will help preserve them longer so they can easily last several weeks to a couple of months.
Creating a stunning fall vignette for your kitchen island or dining table can be easy-peasy. Simply start by taking a stroll through your local farmer’s market or grocery store. When doing so, keep in mind that not all fresh produce is created equal. So much of what nature creates is visually beautiful and worthy of displaying. Unfortunately, much of it is also very picky of its required climate control. There is a reason why hobby stores sell so much faux produce for decorating purposes. Most fresh produce will need to remain refrigerated to last and remain edible. For decorating purposes, select the produce that has a longer shelf life like mini pumpkins, winter squash, and gourds. Opt for a variety of color and finishes, that will add interest to your fall vignette. Those bumpy gourds and squash might not be pretty at first sight, but they will look amazing when displayed next to shiny, smooth
There are so many fun and whimsical ways to display your fresh fall produce finds. You can simply arrange them in a large wood dough bowl or on a serving tray and add in a touch of seasonal greenery. A mini pumpkin perched on top of a candlestick can add some elegance to your fall décor. If you are wanting a farmhouse touch, just write “hello fall” on a pumpkin and put on display. Apples are another fresh produce to decorate with but only last about a week at room temperature. Green or red apples look great in a glass cloche, bowl, or nestled in a basket. Pears might not last long on the counter, but they can look cute in a bowl and be handy as a snack. You can always decorate as simple or as extravagant as you would like. You really cannot go wrong when creating your own one-of-a-kind fall décor. n

IDEAS Urban eye for the single guy

hile the trendy historical loft may not be located on Madison Avenue in New York, this 1,600 square foot luxury dwelling on Phillips Avenue in Sioux Falls gives its tenant the same look and feel. For the past year, Ryan Boen has been working, living, and hosting out of this nostalgic loft located in the coveted Boyce Greeley Building in downtown Sioux Falls. Although fully renovated, Ryan took it one step further and is embracing the space and lifestyle that accompanies loft living. His path to this stage and place in life involved many “pivots,” as Ryan would say. “I grew up in a small town in South Dakota. After college, I became CFO of EML Payments, Ltd., a fintech company that specializes in contactless money movement for businesses.” Working for an Australian-based company allows Ryan to work remotely so he has the freedom to experience various places to live. “I have lived in the Old Market District in Omaha and the Power and Light District in Kansas City, but I truly love living here in Sioux Falls because the downtown is much more quaint and easy to walk from one place to another, and the cost of living is much less,” he adds. He also has family that lives in Sioux Falls, which gave him support while undergoing a much-needed change and provided time to reevaluate his life. “I started out with just getting a small space downtown to work out of while I stayed with my parents,” adds Ryan. “But I quickly came to terms that there was a piece of me missing. I loved the downtown vibe and wanted to make this my home.” While on a casual stroll, he ran across a sign on a building with available lofts. The wheels were in motion. “I just loved it because it was completely renovated and was a good transition from where I had been living.” Fast forward a few months and Ryan was relishing his new living space and lifestyle. With over 1,600 square feet of space, the two bedroom loft features exposed brick walls and beams, original hardwood floors, and doors with transom windows and mail slots. Ryan delightfully shows off all the little pieces of nostalgia he has come to love in his loft.

The main living room greets with high ceilings, warm terra cotta brick walls, and wood floors. For accessories, Ryan and Kimi selected a large, turquoise velvet sofa and accented with caramel tones in the pillows, throw, and tufted leather side chair. “Ryan loves nice things but he is into cost savings. So we actually incorporated heirloom pieces he already had such as his grandfather’s hat, an old bicycle, and a preserved Scotch bottle. My coworker, Emily Connelly, and I teamed up on Ryan’s project. We worked together because we wanted to give him ideas as unique as his tastes and living space.” That approach and their endless inventory of customizable pieces resulted in creating the perfect bachelor pad. “For a thank you gift, I found him an amazing piece of history – an ashtray from the historic Cataract Hotel.” Oversized windows ensure plenty of natural sunlight, and they are finished off with wide black wood blinds. Moving into the kitchen area, the extended bar with grey Caesar stone gives plenty of space for casual cooking, hosting wine tastings and even a last minute after-bar gathering. Even though the space is a loft, Ryan commends the owners for ensuring the numerous space saving details. “Look at this,” as Ryan opens a kitchen cabinet door, “there’s plenty of functional storage.” With cabinets created on site, the wall of rich, walnut cabinets and traditional white subway tile backsplash melts into the design of the main living area. The master bedroom is open and bright while still maintaining the mid-century modern design. A large tufted bed with white bedding sits on a black and white area rug and is capped off with a velvet emerald green bench for the perfect pop of color. The nightstands were a suggestion from Kimi, who tried to honor Ryan’s wishes to

Finding the space was only half the battle. Making it a reflection of Ryan was the next step. He quickly bonded with Kimi Imwiehe, Assistant Sales Manager for Montgomery’s. “Working with Ryan was a really good fit for us both,” said Kimi. “At first he wanted to just find a few pieces and quickly settle.” But Kimi had other ideas in store. “Once Ryan started, he immediately embraced the idea and settled on a Mad Man feel. So my job was to help him find a good balance of function with a masculine feel.”

The one interior wall is painted a light buttery cream to contrast with the dark tones and brick walls. For a touch of nostalgia, Ryan had an old bicycle that ended up being a conversation starter for the space. Finishing off this historic gem is a master bathroom and a guest bedroom with a walk-through to a spacious guest bath. “I love that the accommodations for guests are so nice,” adds Ryan. “This bathroom has a lot of room and numerous places for storage.” Even though there is a small bonus room that’s well-suited for Ryan to practice his golf swing, he often opts for the rooftop every chance he can get. With breathtaking views of the historic downtown 46

DIY: Leaf Trinket Dish Story & photos by Emily Olson
U
sually leaves that have turned the beautiful shades of autumn are used in fall craft projects, but this is a perfect “fall” project to complete in the final weeks of summer before the leaves have lost their chlorophyll. Vivid green leaves that are moist and pliable are ideal to create a leaf-impression out of clay. This impression can be used as a trinket dish to hold jewelry or keys or display simply as an end table accent.
SUPPLIES • Fresh leaves • Air dry clay • Rolling pin • X-ACTO knife or scissors • Paint
DIRECTIONS 1. Pick a healthy leaf free of tears and holes. 2. Using a rolling pin, roll out the clay to 1/8 inch thick. 3. Place the leaf face up on the clay and roll over it with the rolling pin to create an impression into the clay of the veins and outer edge of the leaf. 4. Remove the leaf from the clay. 5. Cut the leaf shape out of the clay with an Z-ACTO knife or scissor. If you are using an elm leaf, a pinking shear works great to replicate the jagged edge. 6. Lay the clay leaf over or in a bowl or other object to create the desired curl and curve. 7. Let the leaf dry in position for 24 hours to fully harden. 8. Once the leaf is completely dry, paint as desired. The finished leaves shown have a base layer of metallic umber spray paint with a light top coat of metallic copper spray paint for dimension. n

Vascular Disease May Lurk Behind Varicose Veins By Sanford Health
H
ealth conditions are often obvious, but a serious vascular disease sometimes hides behind seemingly minor signs that, left untreated, can cause major health problems.
"Such is the case with some artery and vein ailments like blood clots, varicose veins, aneurysms, and stroke," said Greg Nissen, M.D., a vascular surgeon at Sanford Health. USUAL CAUSES The greatest causes of most vascular disease are smoking, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
WARNING SIGNS Although vascular disease can strike without warning, sometimes people have vision changes or slurred speech, which indicate poor blood circulation to the head and brain through the arteries in their neck. Besides a healthy lifestyle, regular heart and vascular screenings can help avoid more serious trouble down the road. Sometimes with poor circulation to the head, a screening will show blood moving faster through arteries, which could indicate a blockage. STROKE
A lot of our population smokes, which is the biggest thing that keeps people from having good health. High-fat diets and a more sedentary lifestyle all increase their blood pressure and can cause diabetes.
A stroke happens when there’s a lack of oxygen to the brain. Every body cell needs oxygen to survive. When there’s a blockage in the head or neck or arm, that creates a lack of oxygen.
Part of it can be genetics, so it’s important that if family members have had strokes or aneurysms they talk to a doctor to see if they need to do a screening test or lifestyle modifications to improve their chance of not having a vascular disease.
The brain is the control center for the body, so when there’s a lack of blood flow to it, people can’t get words out, and they can’t move part of their body. Sometimes a piece of plaque breaks off and goes into the eye. These are all signs that there is a lack of oxygen to the brain.

VARICOSE VEINS Some people consider varicose veins an aesthetic issue only, but they can itch, burn, break open and bleed. They can also cause leg swelling and heaviness. We have to try to figure out what’s causing the varicose vein. Sometimes we can use compression stockings, have the patient elevate the legs or eventually offer an ablation where you close down that vein and shut down extra blood that’s pooling in the leg. EXCESSIVE SWEATING This is actually more of a nerve issue, but Sanford Health’s vascular surgery team does treat it. In general, some people have issues with sweating. We can evaluate them to see if there’s anything from a medical standpoint that can be done. If it can’t be controlled medically or through lifestyle changes, there are some surgical options that might help. n
INSOMNIA? Having difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep?
The ability to fall asleep at bedtime is influenced by factors that occur from the time we arise in the morning. For many individuals who face stress during the day, elevated cortisol levels produced by the adrenal gland can interfere with the ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. Our nutritional team can recommend products that support improved sleep and the ability to fall asleep naturally.

The Right Hearing Aid...and a Whole Lot More By Virginia Olson
F
or Dawn Anderson, learning that she needed a hearing aid seemed like more bad news. The 54-yearold Bridgewater mother and former nurse had been pushing through life with MS. The disease of her central nervous system had affected her walk and balance. She was forced to quit her job because she needed a brace. A few years ago, Dawn started suffering from a form of seasonal hearing loss similar to swimmer’s ear. “My doctor told me my ‘full ear’ was ‘an allergy thing,’ ‘just some fluid,’ and to ‘give it time,’” she recalls. “Eventually, my right ear would pop, and my hearing would return.” But last summer the hearing in Dawn’s right ear did not

return. Her balance also seemed to be impacted as she noticed her gait growing worse. “I felt my quality of life growing narrow, and I knew I had to address my hearing loss, so I sought out a specialist at Midwest ENT & Allergy. I was diagnosed with a serious hearing loss related to the hearing nerve. I would need a hearing aid.” At first, it was tough news, but once Dawn made her brand choice and was properly fitted, she says her new hearing aid has been a game changer! Dawn’s audiologist, Dr. Holly Ralston, AuD, presented Dawn with a variety of hearing aid options. Hearing aid

technology is evolving, and given Dawn’s medical history, one hearing aid had a combination of features that aligned with Dawn’s needs. “I was fitted with a Starkey Livio Edge Hearing Aid with a fall detection feature,” she says. “With my bad balance, I always deal with the worry of falling.” “The feature unique to Dawn’s hearing aid is that it can detect the three phases of a fall,” says Dr. Ralston. “If a fall is detected, the hearing aid sends a text message to contacts alerting them of the fall and shares the location of the user. If Dawn is OK, she can cancel the fall alert. Another feature Dawn enjoys is streaming phone calls and media to her hearing aid.” With the special features her hearing aid provided, Dawn says she so appreciated Midwest ENT & Allergy’s customer service.

“They have been great with helping me set up the GPS and the Bluetooth option.” “Dawn’s hearing loss is unique,” says Dr. Ralston. “It is gratifying to offer her a hearing aid that can do more than just improve her hearing abilities. The fall detection feature provides peace of mind for Dawn and her family.” “Choosing a hearing aid that best fit my lifestyle and situation has made a big difference. I hear well now. What’s even better, my ambulation has improved, and I can walk better,” Dawn says. “I was thrilled to see how quickly Dawn adapted to her hearing aid,” says Dr. Ralston. “New technology can be overwhelming or intimidating, but the more she was educated on how a hearing aid could improve her quality of life, the more eager Dawn became to utilize it. One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is listening to patients and improving their quality of life through a treatment plan specific to their needs.” And for Dawn, “It seems like I have gotten my life back.” n

How Your Health Insurance Company Helps You Stay Well By Jarett Bies, Avera Health
W
hen it comes to staying healthy, resources are everywhere. Ones you can trust might be closer than you think.
“Health plan members expect more than just affordable premiums and benefits coverage. Our members are very savvy and they’re looking at factors beyond deductibles and copays,” said Jordan Anderson, vice president of sales with Avera Health Plans and DAKOTACARE. “Costs are a consideration, true. But people are looking at how their insurance company can help them achieve well-being goals. It’s an expectation – and one that can provide both the health plan and the member with benefits.” People who review their health plan benefits and seek out
incentives and value-added aspects within their coverage plans are often healthier. Companies providing that coverage receive the advantages that come with members in good health. In many cases, education, reminders and customer service support can help anyone stay ahead of the game in terms of health. “We see preventive, no-cost services, which are required under the Affordable Care Act, as one of the keys to stopping what we call the ‘smoldering ember’ effect in a person’s health,” said Anderson. “A smoldering ember, if not noticed, can lead to a roaring fire. Preventive screenings, checkups and immunizations can stamp out those potential health issues before they grow unchecked and lead to substantial problems.”
Health insurance companies offer more than just a policy. They often offer expertise and a big-picture approach toward health that makes a difference. For example, Avera Health Plans has Personal Health Services which includes health coaching, discounts to fitness facilities and help with managing a chronic disease or complex illness. Focusing on a member’s holistic health, personal health outreach helps people with issues that can affect their health. They may be issues that have nothing to do with health care, for example, living environment or lifestyle patterns.
S
Insurance company teams are vigilant, using online and telephone-based communication to remind covered members about checkups and other services that are timesensitive or scheduled. Customer-service professionals, as well as physicians, health coaches, pharmacists and nurses, make sure covered members are aware of their care. “Our member health advocates get involved on many levels, such as when they can catch members before they are referred to out-of-network providers. They will see if an in-network provider could provide the service they need. That involvement can save members a lot of out-of-pocket cost,” said Cari Haug, RN, a Case Manager with Avera Health Plans Personal Health Services. “Our advocates also are an excellent resource for members who seek community resources, and they are well-versed on benefits. They answer coverage questions as well.”

Vigorous research and data evaluation can also help companies to be preemptive and support their members when it comes to prevention and well-being. “We evaluate a tremendous amount of data as well as being thoughtful around the social determinants of health to make sure people are getting the proactive communication they need in order to ensure the right care occurs at the proper time,” said Anderson. “In cases where people were recently diagnosed with chronic conditions, we might be the first outreach they make after speaking with their doctor. In that moment, we are prepared to provide the insight they need to adjust their lifestyle and best deal with the illness they face.” Thoroughness is only one way that a health insurance company can provide well-being and better health solutions. Convenience is another apt consideration. “Employers realize that by offering at-work health events such as biometric screenings or flu-shot clinics, they are helping employees and their pocket books by making wellbeing easier,” Anderson said. “We encourage every member to talk to either their employer or to call customer service so they can take preemptive steps, know their options and utilize all the services that come with their coverage.” Contact your insurance carrier to see what benefits are included in your plan to help you stay well. n

Leah Jaeger: Passing on joy and happiness to others with meaningful purpose By Margaret Pennock Photos by Kelly Middlebrooks | Little White Dog Pet Photography
A
s a young woman, Leah Jaeger had every intention of leading her life to help others. In fact, her dream was to become a social worker because helping others was something that had always called to her. However, her life has taken a turn in another direction, one that has filled her with purpose and passion but has still led her down the path to helping others. A Sioux Falls native, Leah graduated from O’Gorman High School and earned her undergrad from South Dakota State University. Because education is incredibly important to her, she earned her Master’s degree in Human Resources Management from Briar Cliff University in 2018 and as well as her SHRM-SCP certification in 2020 all while working full-time. For the past eight years, she has worked in Human Resources for Marmen Energy striving to help others find happiness, purpose and meaning in their own lives. She shares, “I get to talk to people, help them find resources and find a career as well. I always knew I wanted to help people, and I thought social work was the way to do that.” Although a departure from her earlier career choice, working in Human Resources has kept her on track with her goal of helping others achieve fulfillment and happiness. She smiles, “Receiving a resume, meeting with the candidate and giving them an opportunity to a meaningful career path is incredibly gratifying. I love matching people with something they can excel at.” She continues, “Building relationships is important to me no matter what I am doing, whether it comes to work or home life. When you do your day-to-day job and are in the thick of work, sometimes it may be hard to sit back and realize what you’re accomplishing and building in the grand scheme of things.”

“My career is very rewarding, and watching kids and adults build a life they are proud of is one of the reasons I’m passionate about what I do. Witnessing students grow from a freshman in high school to CTE classes to building a fulfilled life inspires my passion to involve students, schools and teachers to keep exposing kids to all the possibilities that lie ahead of them. I love helping people and being a small part of others growing in their own success, whatever that may mean for them.” –Leah Jaeger
She continues, “Over the last few years, it has been rewarding to be innovative and discover new ways to support schools, students and the community. Hosting welding competitions at the high school and tech school level has become a sought after event. Learning about people, trades, jobs, and the economy has been fascinating, and I want to be part of the solution that breaks down stereotypes about hands-on jobs. It is my hope that informing students and parents about the truth behind the enormous potential of the trades industry allows them the confidence they need to conquer a hands-on field. I cannot convince someone this is a smart decision unless I truly believe in it myself, and I do.” In addition to helping individuals at Marmen meet their career potential, Leah serves on the SD SkillsUSA board, the Foundation Board at Lake Area Technical College, and the Welding Boards at Sioux Falls CTE and all four technical colleges in the state. A special point of pride for her is helping students interested in finding a career in the trades discover a pathway to a fully-paid education and direct link to work after. “I have connected 19 students with Build Dakota scholarships across all four technical schools since its launch.” She is also a supporter of The East River Foster Parent Network, the Banquet and the St. Francis House. Leah is also exceptionally close with her family and friends, and she loves living in Sioux Falls and spending time together in meaningful ways. To keep connected with her family across the US, she participates in a family book club meeting with each side of her family monthly over Zoom. She notes, “This has been a great way to keep in touch with everyone, especially through the pandemic.” In addition, she hosts a cheese party during the holidays which has grown to become an annual event, including cheesy competitive games and puns, which her closest circle looks forward to every year.

For Leah, the past year has been an amazing and life-changing time. She has adopted her fur-baby Golden Doodle Jack and is joyfully expecting a baby daughter. She has also become a home renovator and investor with her fiance Lynard. “I have known Lynard for more than six years, and we started dating right at the beginning of the pandemic. To be best friends, laugh, have the same values, and want the same things in life is amazing. Lynard is from New York, so we’re different, but a good different. He is someone that challenges me in all the best ways.” Having a wealth of alone time over the past year has given both Leah and Lynard time to recognize what is important to one another and build a strong foundation for their new relationship and family. Leah shares, “There has definitely been a silver lining with COVID. The pandemic has really made me stop and think about what and who is important while being intentional with how I spend my free time. Life and time are precious and can change very quickly, which has made me hopeful that people will be more purposeful with their time and energy. Finding what you truly enjoy and being happy in life is so important. I am very excited to become a mom!” Looking forward to a life full of love, joy and happiness is paramount to Leah and sharing that with others is never off her radar. “A positive, 'can-do' attitude will take someone very far in life. My job is not to teach hands-on trades or how to actually weld or paint, but to find the person who is willing to put in time, patience and effort to succeed. Finding the right person and allowing them the opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge they need to get ahead in life is important for me.” n

with Cindee Mutchelknaus New President of the SD Track, Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association By Charlotte Hofer
C
indee Mutchelknaus is not just the new President for the SDTFCCA, but has 30 years coaching experience in track, cross country and even as a cheerleading coach. She is a lifelong runner herself and has run 6 marathons, including the Chicago Marathon. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening and cooking.
1. What is the SDTFCCA? It’s an organization for high school and middle school coaches in South Dakota that gives coaches a chance to fellowship, mentor and learn from each other. We provide educational opportunities, awards and other great benefits to members. One thing I hope to accomplish as president is to get the word out about our organization. I think many coaches feel like they can get all the information about their sport online or on YouTube, but they miss out on the opportunity to share ideas and stories and gain insight from other coaches in the state. Nothing beats a face-toface conversation with someone and finding out they have the same struggles and high moments that you have. 2. What is 1 thing most people don’t know about running? Running never gets easier, you just get faster! 3. Top 3 mistakes runners most often make? Doing too much, too soon, not hydrating enough, and wearing the wrong type of shoe. I tell my high school runners they need to have a RUNNING shoe, not just a tennis shoe. Different brands may be better for wide or narrow feet. Some runners like a lot of cushion, for example.
4. Advice for someone who wants to become a runner? Don’t just go out one day and run several miles. The best way to start is to do some walking or run/walking. Every workout should increase the amount of running and decrease the walking. Don’t worry about speed to start with. Older runners will need more time to transition from walking to running. Another important tip - if something is hurting, don’t just run through it. That can lead to serious injury. 5. Favorite podcast you listen to when running? Marathon Training Academy! It’s NOT just for marathon runners! It has tips on nutrition, preventing injury, motivation. Other podcasts I listen to -- a good mystery thriller, a great song playlist! Time running can also be spent problem-solving, praying, or enjoying nature. 6. Tips on equipment for runners? Many runners like to track their runs. There are tons of apps for your phone, and many watches that will keep track of pace, time, distance, mile splits and elevation. I love my Garmin watch, but some people love Apple or Fitbit. Before buying, do your research – they vary in what they can do and price. 7. You’re a lifelong runner. What do you like best about running? I love the way I feel when I am done! Running can give you energy and vigor for the day. One of the best things running can do is teach goal setting. You can always set a goal that’s a little farther, a little faster. Set a goal for the day, the week, the season. Set an A goal and a B goal. Then apply those skills in goal setting to the rest of your life. Write them down, tape them where you’ll see them and go for it! n

or many industries, the COVID pandemic was not an ideal time to open a new business. But for licensed mental health therapists Sarah Varilek, Brittany Tennant, and Nicole Velgersdyk, the timing was perfect. Armed with a passion for helping others, their dreams aligned to create an opportunity to do just that. Embark Mental Health opened its doors in southeast Sioux Falls back in January. “We chose to open the business during a pandemic because no one was immune to the stresses and impact on mental health that it had,” said Varilek. “We felt our goals to open our practice would be able to help others have another option to take care of themselves mentally and receive the supportive nature of therapy services.” The three women had worked together before pursuing other areas of mental health, and they came back together with a common goal in mind – helping people to embark on their journey to prioritize (and normalize) their mental health. By sharing a passion for pursuing mental health normalcy beyond just a single clinic, the owners seek to spread this message on a community level. “Our goal is to have mental health considered as a part of overall general health much like seeing a primary care doctor, dentist, or optometrist,” said Velgersdyk. “You are important enough to take the time to take care of yourself mentally and emotionally. We all have turbulent times in life and need guidance during those times. We are ready to be that support when you are ready.” Embark Mental Health provides mental health therapy services in the Sioux Falls area for children, teens, adults, families, and couples dealing with life’s challenges. Varilek explains that for many clients, the scariest part is taking that first step to call and come in. “Many times, after that first meeting, there can be so much relief; relief in telling your story, and knowing that you do not have to go through it alone.” Tennant added, “the nice thing about therapy is – I’m not family, I’m not a friend, and you’re not going to see me at the dinner table tonight. You can come in, talk about what’s going on, and then go about your day.” “Everyone has emotions. We’re supposed to feel them – otherwise, we’d be robots. But sometimes we need help sorting through those feelings, and that’s where therapy can fit into someone’s life,” explains Velgersdyk.
