Frugal Family Fun: Preheat to Cozy Sugar and Spice and a Price that is Nice By Jennifer Dumke
B
aby it’s cold outside and unfortunately, you really must stay in. When the temps take a nosedive, there’s not a lot to do outdoors. But don’t let the winter blues get you down. There are plenty of family-friendly indoor activities that are easy on the wallet and also make tasty memories. DECLARE A “BAKE IN” PIZZA NIGHT We all love take-out pizza night but avoid the hassle of picking the place, toppings and of course, the tip by staying in… literally. What’s great about pizza night is that most families can all agree on at least some type of pizza. Go convenient and purchase some ready-made dough for personal pizzas. Create a buffet style of ingredients that you know your family loves so they can create a mozzarella masterpiece of their own. If you have a larger family and oven space is an issue, try to condense the number of pizzas and group together to be more efficient. You can even go one step further and purchase different crusts so “dough-body” will be disappointed. WHY NOT GO PIDDLY Most moms know at least one famous family recipe that you’ve tried to master only to be repeatedly disappointed. Not only are your taste
12
SiouxFallsWoman.net | February/March 2021
buds let down, it’s likely you now have a bevy of unusual ingredients and a big mess in the kitchen. Well there’s no better time than now to wrestle that recipe and come out on top. Whether it’s a pie, dessert or a savory dish, give it your all and have fun on the way. If things begin to go south, try salvaging your creation by adding your own modification for a fun family recipe spin. After all, those classic chocolate chip cookies do taste better when filled with hazelnut spread. Voila-you have now created a new family classic. And don’t forget to give it a new, fun name! WATCHING THE WASTE LINE Chocolate and caramel and butter, oh my! Yes, the downfall to baking as a frugal family fun winter activity is all the yummy treats. Teach your children the value of being a good Samaritan and box and pack up all the extra treats and deliver them to others. Whether visiting your grandparents who live in a nursing home or simply walking a few houses down to that elderly neighbor, who doesn’t enjoy a sweet treat and most importantly, your company. Baking is a great way to bond as a family, save money on spendy treats and learn the values of appreciating others. Just make sure you include clean-up as part of the family activity. n

Adventure Awaits
A Couple's Guide to an Adventurous Bucket List By Chellee Unruh
A
s the world begins to recover from the coronavirus pandemic now is the best time for those hungry for adventure to create a bucket list. As travel begins to become a reality again, spend time together dreaming and planning all of the places you want to explore close to home or far away. We have just the list to get the wheels turning in your head and on your vehicle. Use this list as your inspiration for creating your bucket list or feel free to add any of the items below! We won’t tell that you got the idea from a magazine! SKY DIVE – Unless you have actually done it, the experience is hard to explain. The only way to truly understand it is to face your fears and just do it. It will be an experience you will never forget and a story that you can pass on to future generations.
14
SiouxFallsWoman.net | February/March 2021
LEARN HOW TO SURF – Make sure to add this the next time you visit the coast. It is a great workout and you experience the ocean in a whole new way! If a coastal trip is not an option, then try doing yoga on a paddle board. The health benefits and feeling on the board will be very similar to surfing. VISIT EVERY NATIONAL PARK IN THE UNITED STATES – From the mountains to the prairies to the oceans white with foam, America has so many beautiful landscapes for you to enjoy. Why not bask in her glory by visiting the nature that makes America the best place to call home? If you decide to add this to your list, make sure you get a national parks passport. LEARN A SECOND OR THIRD LANGUAGE – You can never go wrong by expanding your horizons and opening yourself up to a new culture by
learning the language. Once you have the language down, visit the land of origin. It’s a whole new experience when you can understand and speak the language. GO WHITE WATER RAFTING – This one needs little description. The name alone sparks that feeling when your stomach drops from going down a steep hill super fast! Who doesn’t love that feeling! ROAD TRIP OF UNUSUAL ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS – There are a lot of really cool and unusual roadside attractions that you must see. You can start close to home by visiting the Carhenge in Alliance, Nebraska. This homage to automobiles is a replica of Stonehenge. If you are willing to travel a little further, head to Dinosaur Kingdom II in Natural Bridge, Virginia. Here you will find a park that combines history with science fiction. This offbeat attraction features a cast of characters fighting the dinosaurs including Yankee soldiers, mad scientists, and even Abraham Lincoln. PERFORM ON A PUBLIC STAGE – We are all passionate about something, so why not share that passion on a public stage by giving an inspirational speech? If you are not ready to write your own script, then read someone else’s script or try out to be in a play. For those that have done it, there is nothing quite like the thrill of being on stage with an applauding audience in front of you.

TAKE A TRAIN – This used to be the most common mode of travel before automobiles and planes. You can still travel to a lot of cool destinations by train both here in the states and abroad. So the next time you can, opt for a boxcar experience. PET SIT – At first glance, this doesn’t seem very adventurous but did you know that you can pet sit locally and abroad? There is actually a website where you can sign up to be a pet sitter/house sitter. If you love furry four-legged friends, then this is absolutely something you should try! ATTEND A SPIRITUAL RETREAT – Let’s be honest, the pandemic combined with an election year took its toll on our mental health. Whatever spirit or religion moves you, there is no better way to get back to a positive center than to go on a spiritual retreat. Author Lori Gottlieb said it best in her book, Maybe You Should Talk To Somebody. “We think we make a bucket list to ward off regret, but really they help us ward off death. After all, the longer the bucket lists are, the more time we imagine we have left to accomplish everything on them.” Hopefully, this list will inspire you to get out and explore— adventure awaits! n
TURN THOSE WINTER BLUES INTO WINTER MEMORIES!
After a fun day on the slopes or the snowmobile trails, the best part of the day will be relaxing by the fireplace with a hot cup of coffee. Bring the family or a group of friends and make lifetime memories.

Both Kinds of Love What Life is Like in Open Adoption By Chellee Unruh
I
t takes a special kind of love to acknowledge that the best thing for your child is to place him or her in the arms of a family that can give them everything you can’t. It takes a special kind of love to form a deep friendship with a birthmother and give her baby the life she wished she could have provided. This is the beauty of open adoption; it embraces both kinds of love. For this adoptive mother, the desire to adopt was always in her heart. “I worked at a children’s group home right after college and met a lot of kids that I wanted to adopt. That experience opened my heart to wanting to adopt a child someday.” After the birth of her son, they decided to continue expanding their family through adoption. Their parents told them about Beth and John Hughes of Heart 2 Heart Adoptions. “We had a meeting with them and everything sounded exciting and wonderful. We couldn’t wait
16
SiouxFallsWoman.net | February/March 2021
to get started!” John and Beth talked with them about having an open adoption. “We had no idea about open adoption, says the adoptive mother.” “We thought everything would be closed after the child was placed with us and that’s it.” John and Beth shared that open adoption had become the norm over the past three decades. They prayed about it and talked with friends and family. The adoptive mother turned to a friend for advice. The friend shared at dinner one night that she was a birthmother who had placed her baby girl for adoption when she was 15 and has a very close relationship with the child and the adoptive family. The family that adopted her child ended up moving back to Sioux Falls and the daughter she placed in adoption ended up babysitting for her other daughters who were her half-siblings. The adoptive mother thought her friend’s story
was really sweet in how close their relationship became. “We thought, well that sounds amazing and went right along with what Beth and John told us, so that’s how we came to choosing the path of open adoption and it was the best thing we could have done,” shared the adoptive mother. As the adoptive family, they started by doing a home study and created a Shutterfly book that told the story of their family and included photos of their family and friends. Almost a year to the exact date when they met with Heart2Heart, the match process with their birthmother started. Heart2Heart Adoptions worked their magic behind the scenes and sent their book to the birth mother and her family. After seeing the book, the birth mother and her family chose the adoptive family and began forming a relationship. There was a first call with the birthmother and the adoptive couple, and the match was confirmed. “We instantly fell in love with our birthmother and her family,” recalls the adoptive mother. The birth mother was a young girl at the age of 14 with the full support of her family in deciding to place her baby for adoption. “We really wanted a baby girl, but when we got the picture of our birthmother in the mail we just instantly fell in love with her, so we said whatever the baby is, we don’t care. We just love this young girl and she instantly made a connection with us.” We traveled to where she lived and met her right away. “It was an instant love. The birth family loved our son, which was important to us. They included our son in everything so much so that you wouldn’t know which child is our adopted child. They send Christmas presents to both of our children, which is really sweet,” smiles the adoptive mother.
Photos by Julie Prairie Photography
The next time the adoptive family went to visit, was for the birth of their daughter. “It was such a beautiful experience to hold our daughter for the first time,” shares the adoptive mother. “Our birth mother asked the nurse to make sure that we were the first ones to hold her. The adoptive family spent two days all in the same hospital room with the birthmother and her family. The birth mother spent most of that time holding the baby. “We let our birthmother steer the ship.” says the

adoptive mom. “Looking back I think she needed that for her, but I remember in the moment I was very worried that it was making it harder for her. I just really focused my attention on our birth mother because I loved her so much. By focusing on her it helped me calm my fears,” says the adoptive mom. “Our son provided some comic relief.” He was 3 at the time and danced around and kept the moment light-hearted. Fast forward to today, they have a confident little girl that is growing up with both kinds of love. “Adoption is who we are as a family. We didn’t have a moment where we sat our daughter down to tell her she was adopted, she has just grown up knowing. Our daughter feels like she is extra special because she has both kinds of love in her life.” Her birthmother is very much a part of their lives. “She feels like my little sister,” says the adoptive mother. “We frequently text back and forth, and she has come to visit and sends sweet letters to our daughter.” The birthmother is in a very happy place. She is working in a job that she loves and is in a wonderful relationship. “Her happiness means so much to us, shares the adoptive mother. We want the very best for her.” “This story of open adoption is one of many successful stories,” say Beth Hughes. It is common for adoption to evolve into a lasting loving relationship between birth families and adoptive families. While it can be emotional for both the birth parents and the adoptive parents, the result far outweighs any insecurities one might have during the process. The adoptive mother echoes these thoughts. “If I were to council any other adoptive families, I would say you just need to put yourself out there and sometimes it can feel scary to be who you are and worry that they won’t like you, but if you are open and authentic it will all fall into place. Open communication has been key to keeping our relationship strong and focusing on our daughter we both love. Focusing on the child should be the guide for any adoption. At the end of the day, we all want the same thing, to ensure that our daughter has a happy, healthy life surrounded by love.” n

REASONS for Anyone Any Age to Attend Summer Camp By Max Haggar
W
hile researching on why summer camps are so beneficial to our children, I discovered that all of the reasons for sending your child to camp are also excellent reasons for families, adults and seniors to attend camp. Camps are available from A (Astronomy) to Z (Zumba) including day camps, overnight camps, faith based camps or camps focused on cooking, hobbies, meditation, music, nature, science, sports, special needs, skills; the list is endless. If you have a specific interest for yourself or your child; there is a camp specifically designed to meet that interest. My queries noted multiple benefits in attending camps in general with the following traits repeatedly mentioned. TOP 10 REASONS FOR ANYONE ANY AGE TO ATTEND SUMMER CAMP
10. Spend your day being physically and mentally active: Camps offer strength building, stamina boosting indoor/ outdoor options. 9. E xperience success, become more confident and gain resiliency: Experience activities and opportunities designed for personal success. The right encouragement and nurturing provides an environment to help endure setbacks and try new things. 18
SiouxFallsWoman.net | February/March 2021
8. Experience diversity: Expose yourself to people of different backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities, religions and races. 7. Unplug from technology: Take a break from computers, Xbox, phones and the internet. Rediscover your creative powers and engage in the real world, real people, activities and emotions. 6. Develop life-long skills: The variety of activities offered at camp makes it easy to discover and develop skills you never believed you had. 5. G row more independent: Make decisions by yourself – for yourself. 4. Enjoy free, unstructured time: Carefree living where you can relax, laugh and be silly all day long. 3. Learn social skills: Cooperate with and respect each other. Share chores, resolve disagreements and realize the value of sincere communication and teamwork. 2. Reconnect with nature: Experience and appreciate the great outdoors, plants and animals. 1. Make friends and have fun: Camp – “Where strangers become friends and friendships last forever.” n

earing a mask when going out has been a large part of life lately and has taken quite the adjusting, but something that has perhaps been most interesting about it is the way we’ve had to adjust the use of facial expressions in order to communicate. There’s something incredibly mysterious and alluring about covering such a large portion of your face, but it also takes away a bit of recognition as well. However, as trends would have it, we’ve adjusted. Eyes may be the most deeply expressive part of the face to begin with, and now that we must mainly communicate that way, why not amp it up a bit? Eyeliner as a form of flair for your best feature is the way to go as we continue to protect ourselves and others. It’s simple, really, starting off with a light neutral color eyeshadow and black liner on the top lid—nothing too thick, and ending in a wing. The length of the wing is up to you, you can leave it as small or as extended as you like. (For our ladies with hooded eyelids, try the “bat wing” method, make your winged eyeliner as stand-out as the rest!) Next, you’re going to want to take out your white eyeliner and create an arch just above the crease. Not on it, because we want to see it loud and clear! Follow the shape of your ocular bone. Finally, to add some personal flair, choose two bright colors of eyeshadow: a lighter one and a darker one. We’re going to create a gradient by adding the lighter color on top of the inner three-quarters of the white liner, and the darker color on the outer half. This is important, because where the two colors meet you want to gently blend the dark on top of the light color to get a smooth gradient effect. This look is perfect no matter where you’re going, because it’s simple and quick. Even your run to the grocery store can turn heads and garner a wave of attention and compliments! Let your beautiful eyes shine with this double-liner method, and keep the drama above the mask! n

Women’s Jeans 2021:
What’s in Style By Charlotte Hofer
H
igh-Waisted. Skinny. Boyfriend. Flare. Distressed. Aughh! You might FEEL distressed, with all these choices!
It’s enough to make your head spin. So what’s coming up in 2021? And what’s the difference between a skinny and a boyfriend jean anyway, or flare and a bootcut? If you feel a little lost when it comes to the latest fashion trends, not to worry. SFW has done the research for you, and here’s what we’ve found.
3. WIDE-LEG JEANS. Ready to throw it back to the 70s? Seems wide-leg jeans are showing up everywhere. With a high waist, this retro silhouette can be flattering, as it nips you in at the waist. Wear it with a white T or go earth-tone and accentuate the high waist even more with a belt. 4. FLARED JEANS. While wide-leg jeans are wide all the way down, flared jeans flare out from the knee down. Easy to wear with anything – it cuts through from sneakers to boots to a black lace shirt if you want to formal things up a bit.
1. SKINNY JEANS. Love the look? We’re happy to report that skinny jeans – and super skinny -- are still a staple for 2021. But now they’re offered in a high-rise or medium waist. The details are important too: uneven cuts, distress on the jeans, different lengths, raw edges. This season will offer blue, black, and asphalt jeans – most combined with T-shirts or blouses of different styles and length – from the cropped top to a loose sweater.
5. BOOTCUT JEANS. These jeans have a smaller flare – just wide enough to wear a boot. It’s a good look for curvy women as it balances the hips. Try them with a longer jacket to make your legs look longer.
Grab a white T-shirt and leather jacket, and you’ve got a perfect look for all occasions. Classic, hot, and gorgeous. After all, it was Marilyn Monroe who made skinny pants famous in the 1950s!
7. OTHER TRENDS. Look for patches on jeans, denim on denim. And distress. Holes in the knees will allow you to feel freedom and youth. Another look – shine. Metallic fabrics mixed with vintage denim, for a look both retro and futuristic. And really, can you have too much shine? Otherwise, there is always the ultimate comfy go-to high-waisted mom jeans.
2. STRAIGHT LEG JEANS. A bit more forgiving than skinny jeans with less of a body-hugging style, they fit looser on the calves and ankles. They are flattering on any figure. Wear them with an oversize shirt. Tip: Skinny or straight leg, don’t be afraid to try all-black too – top, jeans and boots. It always makes the figure look slimmer. Pair it with feminine pumps or dangerously sexy high heel boots! All-black not your thing? Add bright heels to create visual interest, like red or animal print.
6. BOYFRIEND JEANS. Loose, cuffed; it’s a look borrowed from the boys. This easy, slouchy style works well ultra laidback, so grab a casual top and sneakers. Or, elevate it to nighttime with classic pumps.
The bottom line is, 2021 offers you a chance to build up your jeans wardrobe with different shapes, cuts, and styles… there’s a different look for every mood. So if you feel the skinny jean is your denim life partner, rest easy. The love for skinnys is universal. But with 2021 offering so many fabulous additional styles out there, it gives you lots of choices, making every day a fun fashion adventure! n Sources: Macys, glorytrends, dresstrend, Harpers, Bsamply

Since 1996, The Diamond Room by Spektor has graced their ‘family’ of clientele with gorgeous diamonds, beautiful colored gems, exquisitely unique craftsmanship and engaging, knowledgeable staff. Alon Spektor who helped launch The Diamond Room in 1996, actually established the first wholesale diamond business in Sioux Falls in 1984. Being a diamond wholesaler not only allows Alon to personally and expertly select the loose diamonds used for the shop’s creations, it also allows The Diamond Room to pass the savings on to their clientele. For Managing Partner Justin Shatto, “Our beautiful showroom offers a very relaxed atmosphere with a knowledgeable staff and two in-house goldsmiths that excel in quality jewelry repair. This paired with our ability to hand-select our own diamonds really means that we can provide the best quality

Having a jeweler that you can trust to help you select, or design, the perfect piece to propose or celebrate a special occasion is many times as important as the jewelry itself. At The Diamond Room, creating relationships with our clients has always been our foundation and we work very hard to meet and exceed their expectations.” To browse The Diamond Room’s expansive and beautiful inventory visit their showroom at 3501 W. 57th Street in Sioux Falls or visit www.thediamondroom. com, and their social medial pages on Facebook and Instagram.

Staying Power: Healthy Eating Trends for 2021 Story & photos by Ashley Sornsin
H
ello 2021! The past year brought us many twists, turns and plenty of curve balls, but also taught us a lot. 2020 taught us how to slow down, to look for the silver linings in everything and of course the importance of our health, both physically and mentally. Taking care of ourselves and family has a lot to do with the food we consume. Each new year brings about new trends Here are a few healthy eating trends that have staying power and won’t fade away.
looks different than it did just a year ago. Suppliers are reinventing the most important meal of the day, bringing us new ways to enjoy breakfast. CHICKPEA FOR THE WIN
Expect to find new and innovative products to help boost our immune system and mental health. Food can either be the best form of medicine or the quickest form of poison. Our physical and mental health are affected by what we eat, so it’s crucial to consume foods high in nutrients, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that support our bodies. Choose colorful fruits and vegetables and check out a variety of new products on the market, that are filled with ingredients like vitamin C, mushrooms, and calming adaptogens to support our immune system and our mental health.
Each year there’s a rockstar food that stands out, like cauliflower in 2020, and this year it’s the mighty chickpea. Chickpeas can be found in everything! They’re not just found in hummus, pasta and falafel, but these protein and fiber packed legumes are about to show up everywhere (hello edible cookie dough!). Chickpeas are not only good for you, but extremely versatile, whether you use them from a can or purchase as a trendy new product, don’t knock it till you try it!

Regardless of what you try, these trends are sure to stay, helping you eat healthy, one bite at a time! n

Recipes courtesy of South Dakota Pork Producers Council
Pulled Pork Nachos • 2 pounds boneless blade pork roast (Shoulder, Blade Boston Roast, Boston Butt) • 1 1/2 teaspoons smoked paprika • 1 1/2 teaspoons ancho powder • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 teaspoon brown sugar • 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard • 2 teaspoons kosher salt • 3 cups pork stock (or beer) • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (or white wine vinegar) • 1/2 red onion
• 2 carrots • 1 bag tortilla chips (low salt) • 1/2 red onion (finely diced) • 1 lime • 3 tablespoons fresh cilantro (chopped) • 2 tablespoons queso fresco (crumbled) • 1 jalapeno chilies (very finely sliced) • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese (grated, 4 ounces) • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter • 1 tablespoon flour • 1 cup whole milk • 1 pinch nutmeg (freshly grated) • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
Directions 1. For the pork: make the spice rub by combining the smoked paprika and next 4 ingredients in a small bowl, mix well. Cut the pork shoulder in two equal pieces, or have your butcher do this when you buy it. Season both pieces of pork with a generous amount of spice rub all over and let marinate in the fridge, covered, for at least 1 hour, or overnight. When ready to cook, let the pork shoulder come to room temperature for 20 minutes and then season each piece of pork with 1 teaspoon of salt. Pre-heat oven to 300 degrees F and position the middle rack to be used. Place the pork in a medium size baking dish and pour in the pork stock, vinegar, and liquid smoke. Roughly chop the carrots and red onions, and lay them around the pork in the baking dish. Tightly cover the dish with tin foil and cook in the oven for 3.5 hours. You will know the pork is ready when it’s fork tender. 2. When the pork is 30 minutes from being ready, make the cheese sauce. Add the butter to a small sauce pan preheating over mediumlow heat. When melted, add the flour and constantly whisk(or it will burn) until the mixture is light blonde in color, about 5 minutes. While

whisking, slowly add the milk and raise the heat to medium. Keep whisking so no lumps form in the sauce and cook until the mixture thickens up a bit, about 5-7 minutes. You know it's ready when the sauce coats the back of a spoon. Lower the heat to low and add a small handful of cheddar and whisk until it's incorporated, continue doing this with all the cheese. Season with the nutmeg, salt, and check for seasoning. Keep cheese sauce on the lowest heat setting, and whisk it every once in a while. 3. In a small bowl, squeeze the juice of one lime over the diced red onions and let sit for 20 minutes. Pour off the lime juice and reserve pickled red onions for garnish later. 4. When the pork is ready, transfer it to a platter and use two forks to pull and shred it to pieces. Pour some of the braising liquid over the pulled pork to keep it moist. Assemble the nachos on a plate or platter by layering chips, pork, cheese sauce, more chips, all the toppings, cheese sauce, and more pork. Enjoy!
Thai Ribeye Pork Chops • 4 boneless ribeye (rib) pork chops (about 3/4 to 1 inch thick) • 1/4 cup soy sauce • 1/4 cup cilantro (chopped OR 1 tablespoon dried cilantro) • 3 cloves garlic (crushed, about 3 tablespoons) • 3 tablespoons brown sugar • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil • 1 lime (juiced) Directions 1. Whisk together the soy sauce, cilantro, garlic, brown sugar, vegetable oil and lime juice in a bowl. 2. In a large baking dish, arrange the ribeye pork chops in an even layer. Pour the marinade over the pork chops, reserving about 1/4 cup of the marinade in the refrigerator for later use. 3. Marinate the pork chops for 20-30 minutes.

pen, spacious and bright best describe the feeling that overwhelms when first entering the home of Andrew and Erin Wiswall. The vast space is softened by warm tones of rich neutrals sporadically interspersed with bright hues of teal creating a cozy, lived-in feel for this family of six. But it didn’t start out that way. “We literally repainted the entire house, both inside and outside,” adds Erin. To achieve a reflection of the couple’s style, they enlisted in the services of professional interior designer, Laura Lien, owner of Laura Lien Interiors, to help with the process of fully customizing the main level. Having worked together for a decade, designer-client turned friends, Erin and Laura fully embraced making both cosmetic and structural updates. The most dramatic, a 10 x 10 kitchen island by Showplace Cabinetry, rustic wood beam ceiling and expansive great room. “We love this area because there’s space for relaxing in front of the custom fireplace while watching TV or having family dinners at the large distressed wood casual dining space,” she says. Initially falling in love with the layout and location, Erin is pleased with the finished product. “We were confident we could make the necessary modifications to fit our lifestyle,” adds Erin when referencing the bond with Laura. One of the main benefits of the large main level is that the entire family has plenty of space to gather and all of the children’s bedrooms are on the same floor. “We also love to entertain with family and friends,” says Erin. The grand great room features distressed wood floors, neutral walls and a multitude of natural elements. “I would best describe their style as transitional eclectic rustic,” adds Laura. “Yet we made sure to have a balance of masculine and feminine touches.” One of the major modifications of the home is the fireplace and television wall. Today, a dry-stacked stone surround with a simple white wood mantle adds interest to the fireplace while the adjoining wall features a flat screen television. Custom oversized Chesterfield upholstery offers a warm and inviting place to settle in and is complete with a neutral area rug and distressed wood coffee table. “I love decorating with a South Dakota style,” says Erin of the buffalo print above the fireplace and various accessories. “I also like to incorporate a menswear feel too.” A wall of angled windows offer access to the outdoor wrap-around deck and are kept open with printed pinch pleat drapery in tones of teal and neutrals, adding interest and softening the space.

The dining space and kitchen are breathtaking with a distressed wood beam ceiling accented with wrought iron hardware that coordinates with the floors and rustic flair of the home. “We get the most comments about this ceiling,” adds Erin. The dining room table sets atop an animal print area rug and is complete with a black painted bookcase and unique leather and wrought iron pendant lights. “I always go with what I like and that is what makes it fun,” says Erin when referencing the unique details. “I like to mix it up a lot to keep it fresh and up-to-date.” For the kitchen, Erin knew she wanted a large island. With function in mind, the counter height square island is topped with granite on a black glazed base that houses drawers and spaces for storage. A unique addition is a large slab of wood along the side with seating. Getting a perfectly flush transition of materials required attention to detail and the wood needed to be specially sealed with a “boat finish” to hold up for dining. “Adding the wood is such a focal point; it was important to make it fit seamlessly into the space,” says Laura. To offset the rustic wood and wrought iron, black and cream custom colored patterned backsplash with distressed edges was selected for added depth and rustic elegance. Soft cream cabinets from Showplace Cabinetry blend with the backsplash and contrast with the black tones of the island, granite countertop and rich wood tones of the floor and ceiling. A custom range hood features an oxidized metal that partners with four, dual-toned globe pendant lights above the oversized island. “Light can affect the entire mood of a room and transform the look and feel,” Laura adds. “Placement and style are such important aspects.” A furniture style stained cabinet, custom designed by Showplace Cabinetry, features glass front doors and a coffee station complete with a water source.

For added convenience and storage, the couple completely transformed a space for a walk-through pantry and mud room. With direct access to the garage, the mud room keeps with the theme by featuring soft painted blue cabinets, black and white checkered wallpaper and functional tile floors. “We were able to utilize the existing cabinets for this space,” adds Laura. The main floor powder bath is a true testament to South Dakota with feminine touches. Unique pheasant wallpaper adds instant style that blends with the wood slab countertop with live edges and a glass vessel sink with wall-mount fixtures. An oversized drum light fixture keeps the quaint space bright while a simple brushed gold mirror offers both form and function. A black bookcase is perfect for storage and serves as a place to display collectibles. “My husband hunts so we tried to incorporate that into the home,” says Erin.

Adding the perfect touch of whimsy, the two children’s rooms also reflect their personal style. The hallway leading to their rooms even features a fun and colorful wallpaper. While keeping the space neutral with soft hued carpet and white wallpaper with subtle blue truck designs, a wood bunk bed, bright orange drapery and roman shades make for a fun yet versatile room for their growing family. Sugar and spice and everything nice is what makes this little girls’ room a place that reflects personal style. The eye is instantly drawn to the bold teal hues found in the upholstered headboards on the two twin beds. Textured grass cloth wallpaper, a gold star wallpaper ceiling and unique brushed gold pendant light fixture remain neutral, creating the perfect contrast of the printed drapery.
Laura and Erin
“It was a lot of fun getting to work with Erin on this remodel because she is always willing to go outside the box,” adds Laura. As for favorites, the kitchen and great room rise to the top while small details such as added storage spaces and built-in drawer organizers designed by Showplace Cabinetry add order for this large family. And no surprises here, Laura ensured the Wiswall remodel remained on track and in order by providing 3D renderings of the major remodel spaces and planned-out product selections. “It was really seamless because I worked with a talented and experienced designer,” says Erin when describing her relationship with friend and designer, Laura. “She’s always looking for different trends. I just love the creativity of remodeling. It’s something I truly enjoy,” adds Erin. And it shows. From the pheasant wallpaper to the bold drapery, Erin and Laura made the perfect designing duo to create a home where the heart is. n
DIY Faux Aged Pallet Box Story & photos by Emily Olson
T
he stark months between the winter holidays and spring are often overlooked for seasonal decorating. This year cheer up your space with fresh color by bringing the outdoors inside. Nature is always a sure bet and simple evergreen clippings are a perfect choice. Natural elements go hand-in-hand with mason jars in a rustic wood box. Creating your own box from pallet wood is inexpensive, easy and fun! This piece will also transition seamlessly from season to season. Warm weather is around the corner and you can replace the winter greenery with tulips, daffodils or lilac branches. Pallets are plentiful but finding one that has an aged appearance and is in good enough condition to use is a challenge. Fortunately, the simple aging technique used here can completely transform new pallet wood.

SUPPLIES *This project uses the wider 5.5” boards that are typically on the end of a pallet. Narrower boards are used on the rest of the pallet and they will work here, but the larger board is better scaled to a quart mason jar. • 2 pallet boards cut to 17 inches • 2 pallet boards cut to 6 inches • 1 pallet board cut in length and width to 4.5 x 17 inches • 2 drawer pulls • 4 quart mason jars • Varathane Weathered Wood Accelerator • Tan paint (anything water-based)

DIRECTIONS 1. Cut boards to size and save a scrap piece for experimenting with the faux finish. 2. “Aging” the wood prior to assembly makes the process much easier. First, “paint” on the weathered wood accelerator and let it dry completely. It will be a very dark brown until it dries to a cooler gray tone. Apply to the scrap piece too. 3. A “dry brush” technique can brighten the wood and give it a sunbleached look. Mix tan paint with water at a 50:50 ratio. Start with a tablespoon of each. Tan will give plenty of contrast against the newly aged wood. Using white will make the contrast too artificial. To “dry brush” dip the tip of a chip brush into the watered-down paint. Blot on a paper towel or old cloth to remove nearly all of the paint (think “dry”). Apply in a light sweeping motion going with the wood grain on all sides of the boards.

What Happens when Women have Heart Attacks By Jarett C. Bies, Avera Health
I
t might start with fluttering vision, or an overwhelming wave of tiredness, one so big and sudden that you just feel like lying down, right there at the checkout counter in the grocery store. Heart attacks don’t happen to women like something in a movie – in fact, many times women can have cardiac arrest without chest pain. The underlying cause – undetected cardiovascular disease – brings with it subtle hints when it reveals as an emergency.
50
“Women can have no signs at all and still have heart disease,” says Brooks. “As women, we tend to focus on other conditions more readily, especially women 20-40 years old. Breast cancer is more commonly worried about than cardiovascular disease, even though heart disease kills more people than many cancers combined.” YOU HAVE TO LOOK TO FIND IT There is controversial evidence that certain hormones protect women from heart disease.
“Women can have heart attacks and feel shortness of breath or pain in their neck, jaw, back or shoulders instead of the chest,” says cardiologist Sherrie Brooks, DO, FACC, Avera Heart Hospital. “They might have a general feeling that something’s not ‘right’ or feel dizzy. They might start sweating without exertion.”
“There’s disagreement about whether or not hormone therapy protects the heart,” Brooks says. “Clinical trials, including the Women’s Health Initiative and the Heart and Estrogen/Progestin Replacement Study do not support the cardioprotective effects theory.”
Heart attack signs differ between genders, but one thing does not differ, and that’s the fact heart disease remains the No. 1 cause of death, worldwide, for both men and women.
Researchers have conducted fewer clinical trials involving women and heart disease. The condition is often diagnosed later in women. “In some cases, it’s not diagnosed at all,”
SiouxFallsWoman.net | February/March 2021
says Brooks. “Chest discomfort in some women might be seen as normal, even when it happens at rest.” Yet 80% of women 40 and older already have risk factors for coronary disease. Which is why checkups and exams that consider heart health are important. “Once the condition reaches a certain point, there is less that can be done to address it, and that’s why identifying and calibrating a woman’s risk earlier can help curtail the process of the disease,” Brooks says. “Factors such as early menopause or difficulties during pregnancy can be signs or factors for consideration.” If you haven’t already, talk to your primary care provider about heart health or screening exams to evaluate your cardiac disease risks. HISTORY IS CRITICAL Women, regardless of age, who have had a parent or sibling who experienced a heart attack need to tell their primary care provider about it – right away. “If you have a direct family member who faced high blood pressure or high cholesterol or other numbers that were too high, talk to your doctor,” Brooks says. “Knowing your numbers is important, too, but any family history of heart disease – even in young adults – should be part of your medical record so that risk can be addressed.”

We are well underway to renovating our brand new, two-bedroom suites in Sioux Falls!
DEFEATING NO. 1 Stopping the threat of heart disease starts with reviewing history and knowing your numbers for cholesterol and other factors, yes, but what happens from there? “It can be addressed with changes in lifestyle such as a better diet, more exercise and maintaining a healthy weight,” says Brooks. “If you smoke, take steps to quit, and if you don’t smoke, do not start. Get exercise several times a week, and eat more vegetables and fruits, along with lean meats and whole grains. Every woman can do something about heart disease – and when they do, they can reduce their risks that come with this deadly disease.” n
Each of these suites will have their own, luxurious patio with a private, wrought iron railing. The patios will connect to the Sycamore sidewalk and the south side sidewalk. The sidewalk path runs around the whole building, and is utilized often by our walking club, exercise class, or for leisure. These suites have street side access, which is a perk for the more independent resident and their family and friends who may be visiting in the future.

Kids with Allergies By Virginia Olson
N
o parent wants to see their child struggle. Early identification of childhood allergies can greatly improve a child’s (and a parent’s) quality of life.
Parents can best help their child by monitoring symptoms and what may be potential triggers. “Peanuts and milk are common childhood food allergies. Additionally, children can struggle with allergies to pet dander, pollens, dust and mold,” says Dr. Dan Todd, an allergy specialist at Midwest ENT & Allergy. Skin rashes, hives, sneezing, coughing, runny eyes and even an upset stomach are some of the symptoms triggered by tiny particles known as allergens. Doctors refer to this common allergic condition as allergic rhinitis. 52
SiouxFallsWoman.net | February/March 2021
But how does a parent know if what a child is experiencing is allergies? The doctors at Midwest ENT & Allergy know parents have concerns when their child seems to be suffering. Dr. Todd provides answers to six common questions parents have when it comes to testing kids for allergies: QUESTION: At what age can a child be tested for allergies? DR. TODD: Most research recommends that children not be tested prior to 12 months of age because their immune systems are not fully developed. After 12 months, a blood test can be performed. The gold standard continues to be a skin prick test known as Modified Quantitative Testing (MQT) in conjunction with the Intradermal Testing
H EAD- OV ER - H EALY FAM ILY (IDT) and has been performed on patients as young as four. Of course, tolerance is individually based.
Frequencies For Life
Q: What does an allergy skin test involve?
Your personal, wearable, frequency medical device
A: The MQT involves pricking the skin with a small amount of an allergen and introducing that substance under the skin’s surface. The IDT involves the injection of a small allergen under the surface of the skin. Together, the two methods allow us to produce a safe and accurate test, while also diagnosing those lower end allergies in patients who are symptomatic.
FDA Cleared for: • Chronic Pain
Additional Benefits: • Sleep Issues • Emotional and mental balance • Beauty, fitness and anti-aging • Virus and immunity • Cognition, hormones • Plus 120 additional health and wellness programs
Q: How accurate are the results?
Q: What are the treatment options? A: Following any allergy test, one of our physicians will review the results, then visit with the patient and the parent to determine a treatment plan. Treatment options include medications, avoidance and/or immunotherapy. Midwest ENT & Allergy offers two options for immunotherapy; traditional allergy shots and sublingual drops. The doctors at Midwest ENT & Allergy will work closely with the parents and the child to put together the right treatment plan.

A: The IDT together with the MQT allows us to calculate more accurate “endpoints” (the dilutions of an allergen at which the patient doesn’t react). Treatment is based on these endpoints and is quite accurate.
THE PERFECT . for EVERY KITCHEN
Q: What is the usual length of treatment? A: Though it varies widely among patients, treatments last anywhere from two to five years and are based primarily on how the symptoms improve. Q: How does a parent go about getting an appointment for their child at Midwest ENT & Allergy? A: Patients can call Midwest ENT & Allergy at 605-336-3503 to schedule a consultation with one of our allergy specialists. Sameday allergy testing is available. n

The Importance of Annual Women’s Checkups in the Midst of a Pandemic By Dr. Elizabeth Hultgren, M.D., Ph.D.– Obstetrics and Gynecology, Sanford Health
A
nnual checkups are the best way for you to touch base with your healthcare provider and help stay healthy, and it’s important to keep up with them even during the pandemic. Plenty of people haven’t, and their health could suffer later. When COVID-19 hit, Americans scaled back routine visits in every area, from pediatrics to cancer screening to contraception. Mammograms and Pap smears were down more than 80% in April and continued to be down 25% in June from previous years. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 41% of U.S. adults had avoided medical care due to COVID-19 concerns. Why should women have annual checkups? Annual checkups are a time for yearly screenings, discussing changes in personal and family medical history, as well as identifying risk factors you can change to improve your overall health and wellness. For women, these exams often include: • Screening for cancer (cervical, breast, colon, etc.) • Discussing family planning needs, including the use of contraception • Learning about signs and symptoms of menopause and how to manage them Several topics within the field of gynecology are often considered taboo and thus not regularly discussed. Many women may feel that the symptoms they are experiencing are “normal” or “just part of the aging process.” By keeping regular annual exams and discussions with your

DRUG-INDUCED NUTRIENT DEPLETION provider, we can address and treat whatever signs and symptoms you may be experiencing and improve your overall quality of life. Why do women tend to see their doctor less often once they are done having children? Women as the matriarch of the household tend to put the needs of their family and loved ones above their own. They will often invest their time and energy into the health of their families, but may not exert the same attention to their own personal well-being. Furthermore, many young women are relatively healthy and may not realize that there are important benefits to continuing yearly exams with their health care provider.
Drug-induced nutrient depletion occurs when the medications we take for our various health issues block the absorption, storage, metabolism, or synthesis of essential nutrients in the body. When nutrients are blocked or depleted over time, health problems can develop secondary to those depletions. Many of the most popular medications prescribed today can create these drug-induced nutrient depletions. What can be done about this problem? Our pharmacists here at Pharmacy Specialties & Clinic are specially trained to recommend supplements that will help offset drug-induced depletions and their resultant health problems. It is important that you share with your pharmacist all of the medications you are taking – both prescription and over-the-counter. A common example is the depletion of Coenzyme Q-10 with usage of cholesterol lowering drugs, beta-blockers, anti-hypertensives, anti-diabetic drugs or female hormones.
What do you say to patients unsure about annual exams?

First of all, it’s safe to seek care. Sanford Health has taken steps to make hospitals and clinics safe, including masking and screening all employees, social distancing in waiting rooms, limiting visitors, and keeping COVID-19 patients in separate units. Even in a normal year, going to see a physician can be an intimidating experience. I try to reassure patients that a physician’s office is a judgement-free environment in which your provider is there to work with you in reaching your wellness goals and help keep you as healthy as possible. Annual exams help ensure early detection of conditions you may have or be at risk for developing by setting a baseline for what is normal for you. It is easier to treat you when we identify disease early. Additionally, regular exams focus on preventing or reducing problems before they start. By participating in regular exams, you can build a relationship with your provider and develop a trusting partnership for health care throughout your lifetime. Lauren Lavin:
For the Love of Cake By Natalie Slieter Photos by Maggie Sweets Photography
I
n a back classroom at the old Hobby Lobby on 41st Street, Lauren Lavin took her first baking class when she was in middle school and discovered a passion that would lead her to starting her own business as a sophomore in high school and bring her to where she is today in running the business full time at just 21 years old. Born and raised in Sioux Falls, Lauren attended Sioux Falls Christian Schools and participated in Irish dance, debate, and horseback riding and was also a dance instructor. She went on to attend the University of South Dakota as the fifth generation of Coyotes in the Davis/Lavin family. She earned a degree in Psychology with minors in Economics and Business Administration, all in three years. She loved her time at USD, where she was active in Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, was a supplemental instructor in psychology, and participated on the Campus Activities Board. Her sorority allowed her to take on leadership roles and plan events, all skills that she utilizes in running Bakologie. “I tried to diversify what I did because I thought it would help develop me into a leader as a business owner.” After completing that first baking class, Lauren began making cakes and found that people were willing to pay her for her creations. Christmas was always the busiest time of year for her as she was flooded with corporate orders. In March of 2020, right when COVID-19 catapulted the United States into a pandemic, business for Bakologie took off. She says word of mouth has been her best friend when it comes to expanding her business. While the Hobby Lobby baking class propelled her into the world of baking, Lauren always had an appreciation for the artistry that goes into creating a cake. Picking out her birthday cake was always a highlight. When Lauren turned eight years old, she chose a two-tiered cake decorated with flowers arranged by her grandfather who was a florist. She knows it’s a small thing, but to her, that cake was a big deal. For Lauren, baking merges her interests of science and creativity. She comes from an analytical family – her father is a dentist and her mother a financial advisor – and Lauren even considered pursuing a career in
58
SiouxFallsWoman.net | February/March 2021
medicine. But Bakologie gives her the creative outlet she needs and loves. Thanks to her father and her love for clothing retailer Anthropologie, the name Bakologie was derived and represents the convergence of what at first glance may appear to be opposing interests. Bakologie specializes in cakes for all occasions including weddings but also provides other baked goods, such as cookies, brownies, cinnamon rolls, and cupcakes. Lauren believes the best part of Bakologie is getting to take part in the celebrations of each of her clients. “I’m lucky I get to follow their lives. It’s cool to do someone’s wedding cake and then their gender reveal cake and then their baby’s first birthday cake. You develop relationships with clients.” One of her most memorable wedding cakes was for the first wedding she ever did. It was a three-tiered cake that she made without any dowels or supporting structures, something Lauren does not recommend doing. She had to deliver it to a venue in downtown Sioux Falls and to this day she doesn’t know how, but she managed to carry the cake, which weighed about 50 pounds, all by herself while also opening doors. “Looking back, I don’t know how it got there in one piece. It was one of the most perfect three-tiered cakes I think I’ve ever done.” Wedding cakes are one of Lauren’s favorite things to bake because it gives her the chance to constantly design new and exciting creations. Recently, she created a beautiful black and gold cake and has also experimented designing with edible sequins and focusing on textile inspired designs, such as embroidery. Lauren says her family has been very supportive of Bakologie. Her mom helps her with all business aspects and her dad is always willing to wash the dishes. Her boyfriend even helped her out this Christmas season. When Lauren looks to the future of Bakologie, she hopes to move into a permanent location in 2021, such as a commercial kitchen or perhaps open her own café. With the pandemic, it has made finding the right spot in Sioux Falls a bit difficult, but she’s content with waiting. She says having more space and employees would take some of the pressure off her (during the holidays, she was baking from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.) and allow her to produce more and serve more clients.
February/March 2021 | SiouxFallsWoman.net
61
Besides running Bakologie, Lauren is also a yoga instructor at Form Fitness. She started practicing yoga as a junior in high school and moved on to teaching yoga classes when she was a senior. She also taught at USD to packed classes. For Lauren, yoga is a great way for her to move her body and she has a passion for teaching it to others. Before attending her first yoga class at Form Fitness, Lauren recalls that she decided to eat fish sticks, something she never eats. Unfortunately for her, it was a hot yoga class, meaning it was 98 degrees and humid in the yoga studio. She felt so sick that she didn’t go back to another yoga class for six months, but once she did, she fell in love with it. “Yoga kind of has a dance aspect. There’s definitely progression to it and you can try harder sequences. It challenged me in a way similar to my dance career, so it fulfilled that need.” Lauren loves the Sioux Falls community because she believes it supports and encourages creative people to thrive. She’s grateful for the community of bakers in the area because if she is unavailable to bake something for a client, she can suggest another baker and vice versa. Her advice to others wanting to start their own business – especially for those who are younger – is to jump into it but don’t feel pressure to do everything at once, get support from your family and friends, and get involved with a community to build connections. “We’re a good gem here in the middle of America, continuing to support small businesses allows that creativity to continue and for people to take chances. I think that will lead to something really big eventually.” You can find Bakologie on Facebook, on Instagram using the handle @lauren_lavin, and online at bakologie.com. n
