Move to Meet Diversity Needs Afro and textured hair have now been included into one cutting and styling practice standard for all hair types in the recent review of the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for hairdressing.
Many current qualifications have no compulsory requirement for students studying hairdressing to be educated on cutting and styling Afro and textured hair. Many in the industry believe this leaves a significant gap in professional knowledge and hairdressing services, leaving this demographic largely uncatered for. The new National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Hairdressing published in June now “meet the needs of the UK’s diverse community in one standard”. Commenting on the new standards, Helena Grzesk, Chief Operating Officer at The British Beauty Council, which has been instrumental in pushing for the change, said: “Our aim is to amplify and celebrate the voices of all the communities the industry serves to ensure each and every one of us feels seen, heard, valued and excited to engage with the beauty industry. We are naturally delighted that the new standards have now been approved.”
Face-to-face Education Returns for PROJECT: Men Team
After a year of Zoom calls and online mentoring, the PROJECT: Men team were recently treated to a live, face-to-face education session with London barber Matt Gavin. Matt, who is senior stylist at Manifesto, in Coal Drops Yard, Kings Cross, held a practical creative session for the team, delving into different ways to think about men’s hair and ways to be creative.
Hair and Beauty Charity Launches College Campaign The Hair & Beauty Charity has launched its first #supportyourfuture college fundraising week aimed at hair and beauty colleges to raise awareness of the charity amongst the next generation of industry professionals — plus raise much needed funds for the industry’s official charity. Once registered, each college will be emailed a #supportyourfuture fundraising pack, full of ideas and advice to help colleges find a suitable fundraising event, together with an event poster and sponsorship form. Colleges are then encouraged to work together with their lecturers and students to raise funds during the week of October 18 – 22. To kickstart the fundraising initiative, the first 25 colleges to register for #supportyourfuture campaign will receive a prize of a luxury travel pack (RRP £49.95) donated by one of the charity’s sponsors, Alan Howard, that can then be raffled to help raise funds. To register for #supportyourfuture college fundraising campaign visit www.hairandbeautycharity.org/supportyourfuture

“I wanted to open their minds to a different way of thinking towards their approach to a haircut and not just doing it as a haircut, but being able to manipulate it and change it into something more editorial as well,” said Matt. Team member Tammy Reynolds, said: “It’s always great to hear someone’s take on education and creativity. Even though we all do hair we are so unique in the way we approach the creative process especially in how we research and the outside things we look at for inspiration.”

Access to Total Texture
let's get social empowered by instagram
Total Texture is a new and free L’Oréal Access online training course, created in collaboration with Industry leader and three-time British Hairdressing Afro Hairdresser of the Year winner, Charlotte Mensah. Total Texture is a 45-minute introductory online course, comprising 13 short videos, designed to equip hair professionals with a foundational understanding on how to nourish and nurture hair of all textures. “To be a great hairdresser it is so important to know how to work with every hair type so that anyone who walks through your door can be welcomed,” said Charlotte.
Sally Brooks Honoured at Australian Hair Industry Awards
British Hairdresser of the Year Sally Brooks has been named International Hairdresser of the Year at the Australian Hair Industry Awards. The category, which was introduced to the awards this year, was part of the live event held at The Star in Sydney and live streamed across the world. Said Sally: “I was delighted to receive this recognition from Australian peers and judges. It was lovely to see a live event that reminds us all in the UK what the energy of a room of hairy creatives feels like.”
Top stylist Ashleigh Hodges talks about the empowering effect Instagram has had on her career.
“If it wasn’t for Instagram, I wouldn’t have the career I have today. I started my career in a small town in Northamptonshire - not a big city or a big brand. Thanks to Instagram I was able to connect with the industry and show off my work. I use it, even today, for self-promotion and networking. I’m an introvert and can be very awkward in person with new people, but online you can connect with people while in a comfortable environment at home, so it’s easier to ask advice and talk to new people especially those you admire. Hairdressers are visual people, so for me Instagram is my go-to social media app. Now Instagram also allows you to save images to boards. I use this feature for a lot of my inspiration for both work and personal use. Instagram is a way for me to see what is happening in the world. I use it for everything — it’s grown from it being about PR to so much more. I follow pages that I want to learn from, especially outside of our industry, from fashion to politics. I know an Instagram tile, reel or video is easy for me to digest so it’s a great way to learn something new, and save it to go back to later as well.
My top insta-tips are:
1 2 3
Always be yourself. People will want to connect and follow you because of your personality and work, don’t try to mimic anyone else. Follow accounts that inspire you and teach you something new across multiple industries, from fashion to food.
@ashleigh_hodges_hair
Give everything a go, try making reels, lives and different forms of content until you’re happy —then mix it up again.

Winning Talent
Meet Learner of the Year 2021 winner Jessica Moody. Concept Hair: What was your reaction when you were named Learner of the Year 2021? Jessica Moody: After the announcement that I was the overall winner, I didn’t really hear any more of the ceremony as my mum and I were screaming and dancing around the living room. CH: What inspired your winning look? JM: I was inspired by red carpet looks, in particular the 2018 Met Gala which had the theme Fashion and the Catholic imagination. I spent a lot of time researching that. CH: What made you choose hairdressing?
I
t may have happened back in April, but the team at Concept Hair are still buzzing from all the excitement of the virtual Learner of the Year (LOY) 2021 final, as is overall winner, Jessica Moody. Concept Hair caught up with Jessica to find out what winning meant to her and how it is already helping her to achieve her hairdressing goals.
JM: I love art and when I saw some footage of Patrick Cameron I thought ‘he’s creating art with hair’, and I fell in love with hairdressing from then. CH: How has the competition helped you in your career as a hairdresser? JM: It's definitely given me the confidence I needed. So, when things aren't going my way now, I can go 'well, I'll just do this instead'. It’s definitely been a confidence boost. It's also put me on the map, which will help when it comes to finding an apprenticeship, so it's massively helped me.
CH: Has winning helped you on a personal level too? JM: Oh, definitely. I trust myself more and I believe in myself more. I like to think that I'm my own biggest supporter. CH: And what are the next steps for you now? JM: So at the moment, I'm trying to get into a salon to do my Level 3 as an apprenticeship. But after that, I'd really like to go down the bridal route, and event hair, maybe working with a wedding planner, being their resident hairdresser. CH: What advice would you give to people looking to get involved in Concept Hair Learner of the Year? JM: I'd say just be yourself. Do what feels natural to you, do what makes you happy. It doesn't matter if other people don't like it. As long as you love the work that you're producing. Turn to page 24 for a behind-the-scenes exclusive on Jessica’s first photoshoot as Learner of the Year 2021.

“I’m so glad that I have won my category. It helped me a lot because my family moved from Nelson to Rochdale which meant I had to change college. I now attend Hopwood Hall College in Rochdale. When I went to the college for an enrolment there was only one place left for L2 hairdressing. When I told them about my win in the competition, I got the place. I have worked so hard and I was actually named Student of the Term.”

It was a huge achievement to win. I work at Guerins Barbers, Ammanford, Carmarthenshire in South Wales, for Mathew Guerin, an award-winning barber who has been my mentor throughout. Winning has definitely helped raise my profile and I am really busy at work which is great. I advise anyone thinking of entering next year's competition to go for it! ▶ Secure hair into a ponytail of choice, whether it’s high, mid or low. In this case I’ve secured low to create a sleeker look. ▶ Keep the pony tight, or if you prefer to release the baby hairs, now is the time to do so. ▶ Next, tie a hairband a couple of inches further down. Once the hairband is in place, tease the hair between both of the bands to create a bubble shape. Repeat those steps until you get a few inches from the ends.

▶ Create desired parting before clipping aside the front and sides.
▶ Brush hair through, adding mousse throughout the hair evenly.
▶ Taking horizontal sections a few inches from the nape, clip away the remaining hair.
▶ Use a comb to add in your parting.
▶ Wrap a piece of hair around a styling iron and leave in place for 8-10 seconds. ▶ Continue this process until the back and sides are complete. ▶ Leave for 10 minutes before brushing the curls out.
▶ Separate the front sides from the back of the hair and clip away. ▶ Go through each section with a round brush smoothing the root and rolling the round brush outwards. ▶ Spray hairspray on the flipped ends once dried, using your finger where it flicks to hold the shape.
▶ Tease the roots with a teasing comb for height and volume. ▶ Finish with hairspray.

Autumn 2021 / Autumn Colour Trends
Shades of Autumn
With the change of season comes a client demand for new shades. Here three colourists talk trends, techniques and homecare for great autumnal colour results. ON-TREND Justin Mackland, Colour Specialist, Ishoka Hair and Beauty, Aberdeen
COLOUR CARE Corey Taylor, co-founder NOCO Hair, Bristol
keep it pro
Professional products are a must for keeping your colour looking fresh. This is especially important with the shampoo a client uses. If they use a poor-quality shampoo, it’s likely that it will be full of ingredients that will strip the hair colour. Always recommend clients use a professional shampoo. Healthy hair holds colour better. Always advise clients to avoid using too much heat in their hair and if they do, to make sure they use a heat protection product. Recommend clients to develop a routine with their hair using shampoo and conditioner on every wash then adding a scalp scrub and treatment mask once a week.
The Biscuit Brownie
This season is all about soft biscuit tones created around the hair line with added pieces throughout the hair, enhancing the client’s natural colour, whilst adding a little wow factor. This is a low-maintenance look created with baby lights which are strategically placed at an angle around the face. It also includes a halo section with more baby lights placed underneath.
THE BLONDE AMBITION
Creamy blondes are here to stay this season. Using baby lights with bleach packets, it’s time to create a high-lift blonde and then double weave a low light through the top section. You can create this gorgeous contrast that will leave your clients with this beautiful blend.
TOP TIP Mixing an ashy toner with a beige toner (ratio 1:1) will create this gorgeous creamy blonde result that your clients will be queuing up for this season. This trend is suitable for everyday wear, smooth, wavy or even up in a bobble to really show off the blended highlights throughout the hair.
16 / Concept Hair
TOP TIP If a client has vibrant reds, coppers or pastels then they should opt for a sulphatefree shampoo as these are best for ultimate colour protection. There are also some pigmented shampoos and conditioners that can safely keep your colour topped up at home.
MUST-KNOW TECHNIQUE
Danielle Preston, Senior Colour Technician, TH1 Hair, Oxted, Surrey
SILVER SERVICE
For Autumn/Winter 2021 I think we’ll see a return to clients looking for the ultimate grey, in line with one of the Pantone Colours of the Year. It’s such a versatile shade, as it’s great for older clients looking to enhance, rather than hide, their greys or for younger clients too, as it can be as subtle or as bold as they desire. I’m a huge fan of natural, neutral tones and this ticks all the season’s boxes, especially when it’s a more metallic tone, which I love, and which the owner of TH1 Hair, Thomas Hills, created for this image as part of his Craft collection. The multi-dimensional metallic tones can really help bring a haircut to life, especially when it’s worn with sharp cuts like this.
TOP TIP With metallic tones, avoid yellow undertones and opt for purple ones instead as this brings the desired warmth to the hair and helps create the perfect metallic hue. If your client has a warmer skin tone then a peachy silver tone will be perfect, while blue hues should be the order of the day for your cooler-skinned clients.
Autumn 2021 Advertorial / Confidence Booster
CLEANSE WITH CONFIDENCE
If you’ve ever been nervous about bleaching and toning hair, Matrix Bleach Finder Shampoo can help.
18 / Concept Hair
M
atrix recognises that as student and apprentice hairdressers you need to have products and tools at your disposal that give you the confidence to push yourself and excel in your learning. It’s totally understandable that you might be nervous about bleaching and toning hair, so any product that that helps visualise the process, is going to be a major asset in your education journey. You need to try the new must-have product from Matrix, that helps to remove the guesswork from excess bleach removal. And helps to make life easier for colourists and assistants everywhere. The Unbreak My Blonde Bleach Finder is part of the Total Results range from Matrix and helps to target and remove excess bleach particles, through Matrix’s unique colour-changing formula.
So, if you’re not sure if you’ve rinsed away all the lightener, Bleach Finder will let you know. Helping to boost the confidence of stylists and learners alike.
With Bleach Finder
Enriched with citric acid the backwash shampoo cleansing formula helps remove excess lightener particles. If the yellow formula turns pink, it means bleach has been detected and you need to rinse it off again. The pinker the suds, the more bleach there is that needs washing away. Because the Bleach Finder shampoo helps remove excess Bleach particles effectively, It gives you the confidence that you are rinsing effectively, and therefore lowering the risk of over-processing. No need to worry about patchy toning, as the hair is left with an even canvas as all bleach particles are removed.
“You have the confidence that you are cleansing the hair properly.” Michelle Summer-Davies, Matrix Artist
Matrix artists have been showing the love for the new product.
Carol Ritchie, Matrix Artist says: “I love the fact Bleach Finder is so visual. It’s just such a great talking point. And not only does it smell amazing, it also leaves the hair feeling in such great condition.” Fellow Matrix Artist Michelle SummerDavies is equally enthusiastic. “With yellow shampoo changing to pink when it comes into contact with any leftover lightening particles, you have the confidence that you are cleansing the hair properly. It helps cleanse the canvas before the toning.” Matrix is confident that hairdressing students and apprentices everywhere will love the benefits offered by Bleach Finder.

Autumn 2021 / Haircare
Cold Comfort With summer now behind us and winter just around the corner, what are some of the products, treatments and homecare regimes that will keep hair in good health throughout the autumn months and beyond?

CH: What toll is the summer likely to have had on clients’ hair? MJ: Summertime is a hard time for hair - even if the sun is hidden behind clouds, damaging UV rays can still affect hair condition. Prolonged exposure to the sun can result in discolouration, dryness and brittle strands. Sun combined with chlorine is the worst thing for hair as it’s really drying and leaves hair parched. CH: What in-salon treatments would you recommend to help restore health to the hair? MJ: Backwash treatments such as Schwarzkopf Professional Fibre Clinix bonding system is ideal for all hair types. It restores the inside and outside of the hair for up to 60 days. Different boosters nourish and restore hair and, combined with a home haircare regime, will keep hair in tip-top condition. CH: Any tips for clients on continuing the restorative effect at home? MJ: Weekly deep conditioning masks are essential through the summer months and into the autumn, to get hair ready for the cooler months ahead. Booking in for in-salon treatments and regular hair trims is essential for keeping hair looking and feeling healthy.
“Weekly deep conditioning masks are essential.”
CH: As the colder autumn weather arrives, what advice would you offer clients on caring for their hair?
CH: What are some of the elements of British autumn and winter months that play havoc with hair?
MM: As we’re leaving the summer months behind, it’s vital that you replenish moisture and shine lost in the heat and sunshine of summer. Autumn is also the ideal time to sit down with your client and talk about the best colours for their hair and skin tone, which may have changed over the summer months.
JM: Definitely the awful drizzly weather — it’s not good for any hair type!!
CH: What problems are clients likely to encounter with their hair during the autumn months? MM: Our clients tend to see issues with dullness and slight frizz and we need to help them get it into good condition before the winter months. Central heating and heated tools cause dryness and frizziness in these months. CH: What homecare regime would you recommend to clients in order to protect their hair and get it in top-notch health ready for winter? MM: To remedy these problems we would recommend weekly intensive treatments in addition to using a suitable shampoo and conditioner as part of a regular normal hair routine. A prescribed haircare regime is essential for each client’s individual hair needs. In addition to this, the correct styling products, such as serums, oils and creams will reduce the static in the hair leaving it with the perfect finish. And of course, regular visits to the salon to maintain the health of your hair is essential.
CH: What can hairdressers do to help combat some of these aggressors? JM: The Serie Expert 10 in 1 spray is a firm favourite with everyone as it’s got everything you possibly could need in one product, including hydration, antibreakage, anti-split ends and anti-frizz. We also recommend our Pro Longer insalon treatment because everyone loves to grow their hair longer for the autumn/ winter months. CH: What advice can hairdressers give to their clients on caring for their hair at home during the colder months? JM: Definitely using the correct home care after having a colour service makes all the difference. When you spend a lot on your hair service you should really try and budget in home care too. This will ensure longevity for your style. We recommend L’Oréal Serie Expert Liss Unlimited shampoo and the Liss Unlimited nourishing hair mask, which is great for anti-humidity, keeping the hair smooth and glossy while stopping frizz in its tracks. CH: What would be your hero product for clients looking to care for their hair during the winter? JM: Definitely the L’Oréal Professionnel Steampod. This straightener is a game changer! It smooths the hair with steam so it's kinder than regular straighteners, but it also keeps it smoother for longer.

Autumn 2021 / School Spotlight Award
Spotlight on Talent
Concept Hair’s first School Spotlight Award was a huge success. Here’s what happened…
B
ack in March this year we launched our new competition, The School Spotlight Award, designed to uncover hairdressing talent within the secondary schools in the UK offering hairdressing on their curriculum. We didn’t know what to expect when we opened the competition up for entries, but we were blown away by the number and standard of entries, with school learners across the UK creating some incredible looks on mannequin heads — all exploring the theme of Prom Night. In May our panel of expert judges — Ruth Salt from Wella, Karoliina Saunders, representing the Fellowship for British Hairdressing and Paul Mills from VTCT — were hard-pressed to choose winners as the standard of work was exceptional.
Speaking to Concept Hair about her win, Lillyanne said: “At first, I was speechless when I was announced as the winner, but then I was so proud of what I had accomplished. Getting this award means a lot to me, as I’m able to use this opportunity in my future career and have already gained a work placement for next year as a result of this award. It made me realise that I can be the hairdresser I want to be through hard work and lots of practise.”
Abigail was equally excited about her win. “Winning the competition has meant so much to me. I like the visual side of things, so being able to create a mood board based around my ideas and then bring them to life has really helped me push myself. I feel this will help me in my career path as it’s given me the confidence to try new things out and believe in my ideas.”
If you are a secondary school student studying hairdressing and want to challenge yourself, you don’t have long to wait for the next School Spotlight Award — it will be open for entries in September 2021, with more categories to ensure we celebrate talent at all levels. Visit
concepthairmag.co.uk for all the details.

ack in April Jessica Moody was named Concept Hair’s Learner of the Year 2021. To celebrate her win and to give Jessica a chance to demonstrate her incredible hairdressing skills, we organised for the rising star to take part in her own photoshoot with a professional photographer. There to help and advise Jessica on the day were established hair pros Darrel Starkey, Let Lew and Brooke Evans, whose stunning salon BE Ironbridge was the venue for the shoot. Jessica created two very different styles for the shoot, a classic updo and a more edgy look that really gave her a chance to explore her creativity.

“At Electric, we focus on creating a great atmosphere – hence the name Electric.”
the interview
Creating a Vibe
Mark Woolley is the founder of Electric, a brand that encompasses salons, photo studios, a product range and, more recently The Electric Space in the heart of London. We caught up with Mark to find out more.
26 / Concept Hair
The Interview / Autumn 2021 Concept Hair: Where did you train and what was the best thing you learnt? Mark Woolley: I started at Saks when I was 16 through a YTS (Youth Training Scheme) at a salon in Yorkshire. I moved to London with Saks a year later. The best thing I learned during my training was the importance of mixing creativity with the commercial side of hairdressing. It’s vital to realise the importance of having a busy column as well as expressing your creativity. You can have thousands of Instagram followers, but that doesn’t mean much if you aren’t earning any money. CH: Did you have any mentors in these early days? MW: I met Antony Mascolo (multiaward-winning hairdresser and International Creative Director for the TIGI brand) when I was 17 and we got on. He started to take me on photoshoots with him. He became something of a mentor. CH: When did you open the first Electric Salon? MW: I opened the first Electric salon in Brighton in 2006. I was involved with five Saks salons at the time, including one in London where I looked after a lot of clients. With this in mind, I opened Electric in Marylebone, London in 2008. CH: How would you sum up the Electric brand? MW: My ethos has always been to train team members in both cut and colour. This way one expert can take a client through the whole salon journey. At Electric, we focus on creating a great atmosphere – hence the name Electric. Every salon has a real vibe.
We also look after our people and help our team members meet their career objectives. This way we create a team of accomplished but nice people. In the early days of Electric I was also doing a lot of session work, which wasn’t synonymous with salons at the time. I felt I didn’t need to be a freelancer in order to do my own thing. I wanted to bring the excitement of session work to the salon.
“We look after our people and help our team members meet their career objectives.” CH: Do you employ your team members or are they self-employed?
Tell us about the Electric product range? MW: The biggest part of the company now is the products. We are in 90 salons in the UK and some 500 in North America. I’ve always travelled to the States for session work so I knew some hairdressers out there and started to get them into some salons along with education. What’s different about Electric products is that we manufacture them ourselves and have done for the past 13 years. From day one we have sourced every ingredient and raw material. CH: So, tell us about the new Electric Space in London and what makes it different? MW: The Electric Space is aimed at creative freelancers who need a space to look after clients. A client will feel they are walking into a top salon, with a highly professional front-of-house team, but the hair artist looking after them will be self-employed. We provide the space and the Electric vibe.
MW: The Electric Space which just opened in London is a totally new concept where we welcome freelance creatives, but in the other Electric salons everyone is employed. We believe in education and investing in our people.
The Electric Space is run like a members club. Members pay a monthly members fee plus a fee for booking out a chair for the day.
We don’t go down the rent-a-chair route with the rest of the salons. We employ 96 hairdresser across five salons.
MW: The trend among young hairdressers now is to have multiple streams of income. It’s hard to do that if you work 9-5 in a salon. They want to be hair ambassadors, have their own social media channels that they earn money from and look after clients in a creative space. There is a real entrepreneurial spirit in this generation.
Why is now the right time to launch The Electric Space?
“My ethos has always been to train team members in both cut and colour.” Concept Hair / 27

ClubStar membership brings its own benefits and opportunities the same as full Fellowship membership but only costs £5.95 per month! The ClubStar Art Team was introduced as the icing on the cake for ClubStar members – it gives us the chance to offer affordable education to the next generation of hairdressers and barbers. I work on a programme that will push their creativity and their thoughts and make them step outside their comfort zone. CH: After their time on the ClubStar Art Team, what new skills can a team member hope to have gained and how can these benefit their career? KS: A new-found confidence in their knowledge about the heritage of the industry and the future trends, new skills and new ways of working. And a new confidence to be the best professional hairdresser they can be.

Andy’s Top Five
Here are Andy’s top five hero products and why they’re in his kit bag for every job.
01
I love the Thermal Protector spray. For me, this a key product, with styling nowadays involving the use of so much more heat, it’s vital to ensure that we’re protecting the clients’ hair.
02
04
03
05
I don’t think I could live without the Volume and Blow Dry Spray. I regularly use this to layer up before blow drying and styling, it gives the hair a nice grip and texture and is not sticky. My absolute favourite has to be the Flexible Hairspray. It’s perfect for being able to layer up the hairspray, brush it out and re-layer it without any residue.
The Salt Spray is also a great product to either prep the hair to give it a bit more grip or use it to work into the hair which gives it an undone or broken feel.
Finally, the Glamourous Oil Gloss. I love this as it’s perfect for when you need something to weigh the hair down and break into the edges.
Indola’s new and improved care & styling over-the-counter range will be available at your nearest wholesaler very soon. For more information about Indola visit www.indola.co.uk or follow @indolauk on Instagram.

Autumn 2021 / How To
creating a
party look
From PIVOT POINT LAB, a bespoke VTCT Learning Resource, this step-by-step features three-strand braids manipulated to create a soft, tousled texture. 01
Prepare hair with double moussing technique. Blow-dry with a round brush and clip curls into place to cool. Section with an irregular or zig-zag parting from over the right eye to the crown.
02
Using a slight curve in the crown, extend the parting to the right-side nape. This will encourage blending between the two sections.
03
On the right side, create a three-strand overbraid, starting at the front hairline. Use diagonal partings and pick up from both sides of the braid. Position the braid toward the top of the section.
04
As you reach the back of the section, position the braid closer to the sectioning line.
05
When you reach the hairline, continue braiding off the scalp for approximately 5cms. Temporarily secure with a long clip.
46 / Concept Hair
06
Move to the left side and repeat.
How To / Autumn 2021
07
Release the first braid, direct the second braid across the back and join the strands from both braids together. Create a three-strand offthe-scalp braid, working until you are approximately 5cms from the ends.
Repeat on the left side and loosen perimeter stands. Then push both braids toward the section line to join them. Use long pins to temporarily hold the braids in place.
12
Remove the band and backcomb the ends to secure.
The finish shows soft texture within an elongated asymmetric shape. Courtesy of Pivot Point International, Inc. © 2021
Hold the braid near the ends. Starting at the bottom, loosen the strands along the outer edges of the braid. Work from the ends to the nape.
11
Once you have achieved the desired shape, use grips in a weaving technique to connect the braids and secure the design. Visually detail to create movement and texture.
09
Continue toward the face on the right side. Concentrate on the top of the braid close to the section line. Pull strands from the main body of the braids—not from the pickup partings. Secure the ends with a band.

Autumn 2021 / Careers
What is a Session Stylist?
Session styling is one of the most revered elements of a hairdressing career. Some combine it with a salon stylist career, while others are able to commit totally to session work. We spoke to two successful session stylists about their career journeys so far. How much of your job is session work?
Daniele de Angelis
Is Academy Manager at the Toni&Guy Academy in central London. He is a valued member of the international artistic team, combining session work with his job as Academy Manager.
Daniele De Angelis: As Academy Manager, my main role is working in the academy, then on a Saturday I work in the salon with clients. In my spare time I work on photoshoots and at fashion shows. I started work in the salon, then progressed as an educator. Sessionwise, I work at the Men’s Fashion Week and London Fashion Week every season, as well as working on our campaigns and collections. Every hairdresser needs to start their career in the salon; it’s the place to build your confidence and your skills. It’s the balance you need at the beginning of your career. CH: Give me a few examples of session work you have done DDA: Toni&Guy support a lot of up-andcoming talent and it’s great to work with passionate and enthusiastic people.
48 / Concept Hair
In the past decade I have worked with some amazing new and established names, such as Vivienne Westwood, Tom Ford, Giles Deacon and at events such as the British Fashion Awards. For me, everything has to have a beauty; when the hair fits perfectly into the puzzle you know you’ve done a good job. CH: What type of session work do you find the most challenging and why? DDA: The most challenging thing is time. Time is what can be the difference between a nice, relaxed job and a crazy five minutes. The biggest challenge is when a model arrives late from another show and you have to do the hair in three minutes, instead of 20 minutes and make it fit with the rest of the model’s looks.
Careers / Autumn 2021
Elizabeth Rita
Is a freelance session stylist and bridal hair expert as well as an experienced make-up artist. She is also a member of the Hairdotcom Art Team.
What steps would you advise someone just entering the industry to take in order to move towards becoming a session stylist? • Have a strong foundation in general hairdressing skills and knowledge. •
People think session stylists only style hair – they don’t, they have to prepare wigs and create styles out of hair pieces. Make sure you are fully qualified in all the cutting foundations.
•
Start your career as a salon hairdresser then move in the session direction after a few years. Spend time with someone who dresses hair.
• Reinforce your hard and soft skills in the salon, you will need them backstage. •
Build up contacts who are already in that world and ask to assist them for free to get that experience.
•
Don’t expect to immediately earn lots of money from session work; it’s about creating connections and a new network.
•
Don’t contact agencies until you have more experience. They will want to look at your portfolio and it can be disheartening if you get turned down because you haven’t perfected your skills.
Concept Hair: What appealed to you about session styling?
sure the hair and makeup matched the storyline.
Elizabeth Rita: I have always had a passion for hair, even as a child. I modelled when I was younger which meant I got to see some incredible hairdressers first-hand on photoshoots and on the runway, this was a fantastic window into what I knew my future could look like.
A different area of my job that I love is doing is the posters and promos for musicals. This means I get to work with wigs. For example I worked on both the 9-5 musical and the Rocky Horror Show, both of which involved wigs and character makeup.
CH: How did you get your break? ER: I got my break by sheer perseverance and continually setting up my own shoots with photographers and practise, practise, practise! Eventually people saw my work. This was before the days of social media, so I actually had to meet people before they hired me and that led on from one job to the next. I signed with Alchemy Artists 10 years ago and haven’t looked back! CH: Give me a few examples of session work you have done in different areas and the different skills that were needed for each job. ER: I have just designed the hair and makeup for Maisie Peters’ music videos, and I created a really cool, young London look for her. For this job I also had to think about continuity throughout the music video to make
High fashion is also a love of mine. When I headed the Dior Trunk Shows in London that was incredible, I loved the whole experience from the first prep day to the last show. I had to get the ‘OK’ for everything from Dior’s Paris head-office and had to make sure every model looked pure perfection. It is a high-pressure role, but I loved every second. CH: What steps would you advise someone just entering the industry to take in order to move towards becoming a session stylist? ER: I know everyone says work really hard, which is obvious but on-top of that I would say be available and be your best-self on every job. I would also say reach out to established session stylists and ask to assist them, this is much easier to do now because of the world of social media.

Successful hairdressers strive to exceed their clients’ expectations and this requires an understanding of how to solve problems and deliver good feelings.

• A special occasion such as a party a prom or a wedding. Through a skilled consultation, your task is to understand what problems need solving and offer solutions, recommendations and advice.
While solving a client’s problems may meet their expectations, we tick the good feeling box when we exceed what they expected. The simple diagram included here illustrates how we effect good feelings during the client’s visit. The vertical line measures ‘feel plus (+)’ and ‘feel minus (-)’, in other words, the client’s feelings going up and down. The horizontal line measures time.
For example, the line illustrated could represent a 45-minute appointment for a cut and blow dry. When a new client visits for the first time, they are likely to be excited, but a little apprehensive. They may be wondering if they will get the same great experience their friend spoke of? So, a client often starts their appointment a little in the ‘feel minus’ range, and it is our job to get them into the ‘feel plus’ range as quickly as we can. A smile and a friendly greeting soon gets them into the ‘feel plus’ range and they will already be feeling happy about their decision to choose you. As the visit progresses deliver things which make the client feel good — offer some advice about home maintenance, for example — and avoid incidents that potentially spoil the visit, such as getting their shirt wet at the backwash. When the client leaves the salon saying “Wow!” you have done a great job and will have a loyal client.
Autumn 2021 / Scissor Care
bettertons Scissor TLC
IF YOU INVEST IN A HIGH-QUALITY PAIR OF SCISSORS, THEY SHOULD LAST YOU MANY YEARS, AS LONG AS YOU CARE FOR THEM PROPERLY. HERE, SCISSOR EXPERTS BETTERTONS ANSWER SOME COMMON QUESTIONS ON SCISSOR CARE AND MAINTENANCE.
How often should I have my scissors serviced?
Depending on usage we advise that you have your scissors serviced every 1-2 years. This is unless they have been dropped or have any other damage, if this is the case please have them looked at immediately.
“PROPERLY STORING YOUR SCISSORS WILL PREVENT NICKS IN THE BLADES AND ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE”
At Bettertons we use Joewell accredited technicians, who have been servicing scissors for over 30 years, to offer the highest quality sharpening. Always ensure you are using a professional scissor sharpening service — a rogue operator can destroy your precious scissors in seconds.
How do I know when my scissors need sharpening?
It’s normal for scissor blades to lose their sharp edge over time. The main sign that your scissors need sharpening is when they fail to cut cleanly. You will feel the blades bending the hair as you cut. This will affect the quality of your work, and could leave your client with damaged ends.
How do I lubricate the tension screw?
You need to oil your scissor screw regularly to ensure optimum performance. We suggest a small dab of oil at the end of each day. Open your scissor to a 90° angle and put a drop of scissor oil at the joint, where the blades meet. Work the oil into the joint by opening and closing the blades. This will release any hair, dust, dirt or chemicals that found their way to the joint, and will leave a protective coating.
How should I store my scissors to keep them in the best condition?
Properly storing your scissors will prevent nicks in the blades and accidental damage. The best way to store your scissors is to keep them in the case provided. Always make sure you wipe them clean to remove any product or hair before you store them. You should wipe them after every client.

Dylan Christie The Long Good Hair Day LOCKDOWN LED TO AN INCREASING NUMBER OF MEN BEING FORCED TO GROW THEIR HAIR LONGER, AND MANY REALISED THEY LIKED IT! DYLAN CHRISTIE, A STYLIST AT MANIFESTO IN LONDON’S COAL DROPS YARD OFFERS HIS TIPS FOR CUTTING AND FINISHING LONGER LOOKS ON MALE CLIENTS.
“FINISH AND PERSONALISE HAIR WHEN IT'S DRY.”
01
04
02
05
Layers remove weight, but maintain length. Layering hair is a great way to give the hair texture and remove the bulk without taking off any external length. Consult your client as to how they wear their longer hair. Whether they tuck it behind their ears, or part it off centre will affect how you cut and section the hair.
03
When drying longer hair, use a diffuser. Most men let their hair dry naturally, using a diffuser will replicate this and avoid putting too much volume in the hair. It will also reduce frizz and fluffiness.
Finish and personalise the hair when it’s dry. When its dry, you can see the true texture, length and movement of the hair. Take time to personalise the haircut to your client after cutting in the main shape. Analyse and discuss your client’s hair type during the consultation. Thinking about hair texture and condition will really help you decide what sort of products to use. Serums help with dry and damaged hair, while curl creams build and define waves and curls. Heavier products that contain oil can reduce volume and give more control. Your client will also need to think about using the correct shampoo and conditioner to maintain healthy and manageable long hair.

Autumn 2021 / Building Your Profile
Chris Foster High Profile
“A SOCIAL MEDIA
TOP BARBER, EDUCATOR AND FOUNDER OF THE PROFILE GUY, CHRIS FOSTER OFFERS HIS TIPS FOR BUILDING YOUR PERSONAL PROFILE IN THE INDUSTRY.
PROFILE IS IMPORTANT TO COMMUNICATE YOUR MESSAGE”
B
uilding your profile within the industry is the second most important element of your career to master after honing the craft of hair. Why? The best opportunities come to those who are known within the industry. They say it’s not about what you know, it’s who you know, but actually, it’s about who knows you. So here are a few tips and strategies that will help you cultivate a successful career in hair.
your message. The reason why this is helpful is that as humans we are attracted to people with whom we can find a common goal, inspiration or ethos. You will become someone they can trust and work with, attracting the opportunities and the career that you want.
03
Another strategy is consistently entering competitions. It is no secret that the most successful hairdressers are those who enter competitions and win. Get in the habit of entering competitions and constantly showing your work. Play to your strengths-there are many different types of competitions out there. Try to find the one which plays to your strengths. If you are someone that gets very nervous in live situations, then maybe a live competition is not for you. Think about entering a photographic competition instead. If you don’t have the money to do a competition shoot, then maybe consider a live competition which has fewer costs attached to it.
01
Develop your speciality and get known for this skill set. This does not mean that you will not learn other techniques or that you will ignore other areas of the industry. Being able to distinguish yourself will help people to identify the value you can add to projects or programmes.
02
A social media profile is important to communicate your message to the world consistently. If you have recently qualified or maybe yet to qualify you may not have a lot of your own work right now, but you can comment and repost work that inspires you. To start with, emulate social media feeds of key people of influence. Study the way in which they post and the topics they cover. Then, once you have your own content use this formula to share

Autumn 2021 / Business Skills
Show the client the product. Place it in front of them so they can see what you are using. This way they will naturally touch and feel the product and read the information on the packaging.
“Educate the client. Explain to them how much of the product to use”
Explain the benefits. Tell your client why you are using specific products and why they are good for their hair. I use analogies that they will relate to. So, for example when I am explaining the shine element of a product I will say ‘it is like a lip gloss for hair’. A lot of clients don’t know why they should use a certain product. They often use the wrong product and don’t like the result so will stop using professional products all together.
TOP TIP
2
Educate the client. Explain to them how much of the product to use, show them how much you put on your hand before you apply. Normally, at this stage most clients will comment on how amazing it smells and that’s my moment to sell the product as a hair fragrance too.
3 4 TOP TIP
Remind the client in a really nonconfrontational way in your conversation that if you spend so much money on a colour and cut, using professional products is the best way to keep it looking as good as it can and also keeps the hair in the best condition it can be. We use Wella, so I like to explain that more than 140 years of specialised science and technology has gone into the products to make them so amazing.

“Be your true self and be as authentic as possible”
01
PICK UP YOUR PHONE AND START FILMING Confidence is everything, and you need to give it all you’ve got.
02
CHOOSE YOUR TOPIC, AND WRITE A SCRIPT Having a script is the power to know what you’re saying. Plus, it will stop you getting in front of the camera and freezing up, and then giving up. Use your script as a plan to figure out what footage you need, and don’t forget that all important B-roll.
03
OVERSHOOT AS MUCH AS YOU CAN Shoot multiple versions of your script and other footage you capture. That way, when it comes to editing you’ll have a choice of which to use.
04
GRAB YOUR VIEWERS’ ATTENTION Mobile social users spend on average just 1.7 seconds before they swipe onto something else, and that’s how long you have to capture their attention. Your opening shot is one of the most important things to focus on.
05
GET YOUR KIT TOGETHER Think about extras you could use to enhance your content and make your life much easier. Even something simple like a bluetooth clicker will be a game changer.
@kycutwilson
@babylissprouk
06
THINK ABOUT YOUR LIGHTING Natural daylight is without a doubt the best light to film in, but it’s constantly changing, so be careful when you plan to shoot and how long it will take. Artificial lighting will help you, but your setup is very important.
07
LET YOURSELF BE HEARD The mic on your phone is great, but headphones or even a clip on mic can make your voice so much clearer and level up the quality of your video.
08
FIND YOUR VIBE Make sure you feel comfortable with what you’re capturing, otherwise it won’t come off very well on camera. There are different ways of creating content for different comfort levels so find out what you’re happy with and go for it.
09
OVER-PERFORM The camera sucks so much life out of you, that you need to go over the top to compensate for it, even though you might feel a bit silly at first doing this.
10
BE YOURSELF Try and be your true self and be as authentic as possible - this will be so important when you look back at your content and know you’ve created something you’re proud of.
