Our approved lab for DNA, Neogen, has increased the cost of blood and hair cards to the ASA and as a result, it is necessary to start charging for them to cover this increase, plus the postage it takes to send them. Blood cards are now $1/card and hair cards are $2/card. Methods for obtaining them have not changed. Please call the office or fill out the card request on shorthorn.org to order. The lab’s preferred methods are TSU samples and blood cards. TSU kits can be purchased directly through Neogen or Allflex. *Remember, there is an additional fee for testing hair and semen. **DO NOT test twins via blood samples.

American Shorthorn Association

New Rule - Jan. 1, 2022 The Board of Directors unanimously approved a new rule, which begins January 1, 2022: “All bulls (Shorthorn & ShorthornPlus) born January 1, 2022 and after will be required to have a genomic profile and parentage markers on file. In order to register any progeny with the American Shorthorn Association”. This means that regardless of service type, all bulls (Shorthorn & ShorthornPlus) used for breeding need to be genomically tested (currently, this is the 100K test but could be subject to change according to Neogen standards in the future). This pertains to AI sires as well as pasture sires/clean up bulls. The rule only affects bulls born after Jan 1, 2022, so this rule won’t really come into play until their progeny are born, late 2023 or 2024. Please be aware that AI sires still require the 3 genetic conditions as well – TH, PHA, and DS.

Supply & Demand

W

e enter May and June of 2022. A lot is happening with changes in our daily activities and budgets. Inflation’s rapid pace is affecting most every commodity. The supply chain is another issue. Here at ASA we see increases just like you see at your operations. Paper cost has gone through the ceiling - if you can get it and we’ve struggled with the availability of toner to print pedigrees and mail out statements. We amass what we can, so we do not get caught like we have in the past. The cost of fertilizer and input costs including feed have become excessive as well. End users are stock piling materials which affects availability and drives the costs up. This is not the first time we have seen inflation. But, in my lifetime it is the first time I have seen this amount of limited supplies. Have you noticed the empty shelves of certain products at times? The brand and flavors of soda pop have even been affected by a limited supply of aluminum cans. Then there are the issue of transportation or freight of the products we use and cannot get in a timely manner – trucking and the rising cost of fuel is a big supply chain problem. I am going through this review of our present situations to bring out a major point. Inflation is a big issue, but supply is an even bigger one. How does this affect the Shorthorn business? Review the prices we have seen for both Shorthorn bulls and females in our sales this past fall, winter, and spring. We had our best ever National Shorthorn

8

Sale in Oklahoma City at the Cattlemen’s Congress. If you have followed the internet heifer sales and production sales for both bulls and females, the Shorthorn market is strong with a lot of demand at this time. The value of Shorthorn cattle is holding and growing with all the other economic activities in our country. We are seeing a demand for quality animals with documentation and the supply is not as great as the demand. You will not see as much gain for animals without acceptable documentation and visual quality in general. Those Shorthorn individuals that can contribute to the industry have extra value and always will. We have seen Shorthorn bull sales in volume rank in the top of all breeds in some states. The cattle world is noticing the value and contribution a Shorthorn can make in our beef cattle industry. Shorthorn breeders are also seeing the need to improve their own herds and continually add new genetics with documentation the marketplace demands. There are breeders taking advantage of selling Shorthorn beef locally for premiums that I think most never dreamed of. This market is there if you want to pursue it and grow it. The supply issue is like other commodities more demand than available product for good Shorthorn beef and genetics. During the months of May and June a lot is happening in the cattle industry and Shorthorn breed. First, there is the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Conference. I strongly recommend

shorthorn country = may/june 2022

serious Shorthorn breeders attend to learn about new technology and how to use it. There is the greatest Junior National in the USA in June in Kansas City. Everyone is invited. You do not need to be a junior to attend. This is our breed’s biggest event each year. It is a good place to see many Shorthorn enthusiasts and potential customers in one place. The World Shorthorn Conference is in the UK in July. This is a great opportunity to share time with Shorthorn breeders from around the world in jolly ole England, the birthplace of the Shorthorn Breed. Along with these things, we are still celebrating the 150 years of the ASA, 1872-2022. This year’s July herd book is being promoted as a special edition for the 150th and will be a reference issue for many years. I encourage everyone to be part of this special publication. It is a great time to let folks know who you are, where you are, and what you have. As the demand grows it is important to make sure other Shorthorn breeders know about you so you can be a supplier! The breed is growing in both registrations and membership, along with the value of the cattle. Become part of the movement by getting involved in activities and exposing yourself and your operation to the industry. There is no time like the present to show and share your operation with the entire Shorthorn Family!!! =

Top Ten Rankings As I was reading through another breed publication, I found an article highlighting the top ten sires for calves registered in that breed in 2021, and how they ranked as a group for an EPD profile. The author used the average of the ten bulls for various EPDs and where that average figure would rank in the breed on a percentile basis. I’m not one to steal a man’s ideas, but I am known to use them to guide my own inspiration. I conducted the same exercise for the top ten Shorthorn sires by number of registrations, but also added information from our friends and competitors in some other British breeds. If we don’t look at those we share a market with, it’s hard to know where we are and where to go. Below you will find a table that compares the top ten sire for calves registered in the Angus, Hereford, and Shorthorn breeds. You will also find the ranking of each of those ten sires for various EPDs within their breed. Also included are the percentile ranking where

the highest and lowest individuals in the breed’s top ten lands on their individual genetic merits. Angus and Hereford both have a maternal index ($Maternal in Angus and Baldy Maternal Index for AHA) and a terminal index ($Beef in Angus, $Certified Hereford Beef for Hereford) that while not mirror images of our $British Maternal or $Feedlot, they are good comparative tools that give an idea of where breeders are placing emphasis in their genetic selection. What stands out to me in this exercise is that the heavily used Shorthorn bulls do not necessarily stand out from the breed population for their genetic merits. They are ranking lower across the board for their genetic predictors than the other British breeds’ top-used sires. In each of these EPD and index rankings, the average percentile for the Shorthorns ranks third of the breeds being compared. While there are some individuals that do rank near the top of the Shorthorn breed in each category, there are also bulls who rank very poorly

in the population that are siring a good number of calves. Outside of CED, the low-ranking Shorthorn for each trait is consistently in the very bottom of the breed population. There are certainly low-ranking Angus and Herefords being used heavily, but they do not seem to have bulls that are in the very bottom of the breed as often as we do. I believe the EPDs of the top ten sires in each breed show a direction in which breeders are wanting to take their livestock. You realize that the Angus and Hereford cattle are looking for a bit more growth, and the black hided bulls are certainly headed in a more terminal direction (as indicated by their lower ranking for milk and maternal index and top of the chart for terminal index). The Herefords are also pushing for more terminal merit, but don’t appear to be taking it as far or straying away from their maternal roots. When you look at the Shorthorn figures, what trend do you see? Is there a direction that things appear to be going based on these

State Associations As the year progresses and our schedules continue to get filled, don’t forget to send in events happening within your State Association. These will get updated on the ASA’s website calendar, www.shorthorn.org/events, for members within your State Association and surrounding State Association to stay up to date on with what is going on. Just a reminder that these must be association events, not individual breeder events.

I am currently reaching out to State Association Officers to get an updated list of officers to publish on the website and include updated rosters in the July issue of the Shorthorn Country. If you are a State Officer or a new State Association, please reach out to me. I plan to continue to improve the communication between the American Shorthorn Association and State Associations moving forward into the future. You can find a list of these

2022-2023 ASA Point Show System Announced Ask the majority of people their favorite season and you are likely to hear one of the standard four seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall. You may even hear the occasional ‘football’ or ‘baseball’ season. But ask a showman, and you’ll hear something very different: Show Season! ASA staff couldn’t agree more and has secured show locations for the 2022-2023 Point Show System. It is our goal with selecting each show to promote Shorthorn cattle and exhibitors at an array of locations across every region. On page 34, you will find our shows outlined with their designated point level. This year’s Super National Shows were selected as they historically have become our largest shows, allowing us to highlight our breed in the highest capability. Points earned at a Super National Show will count toward an animal’s National Awards point total. Super National Shows for the 20222023 Show System are the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, Kentucky and Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In addition,

Cattlemen’s Congress will host our National Summit Sale. Many factors have been considered when selecting our 2022-2023 participating shows including entry history and show schedules. Each show will be evaluated on a yearly basis for their participation. The selected shows present solid numbers with the anticipation for continued growth at many. We look forward to our membership’s participation in the selected shows and cannot wait to see you there! Region Assignments :: Map No changes have been made to a state’s regional assignment. National Awards National Awards will be calculated from the seven total National Shows: five National Shows and two Super National Shows. An animal MUST exhibit at two shows on the National level to be considered for National Awards. National Awards consist of National Show Female, National Show Bull and divisional awards.

Regional Awards Each Region consists of four total shows: two Regional shows, one Super Regional Show and one National Show. Regional Awards will be calculated from points earned at each show by an individual animal. To be considered for awards, an animal MUST exhibit at two shows within a region. Regional Awards will consist of overall awards & divisional awards. Point Distribution Points will be distributed based on the provided point scale, with Super National Shows receiving the most points and Regional Shows receiving the fewest points as indicated. An animal’s earned points will be recorded with the ASA and used to calculate Regional and National Awards. Please feel free to reach out to either us if you have any questions regarding the show system. Cassie Reid, cassie@shorthorn.org Wade Minihan, wade@shorthorn.org =

Regional Show Winners Winners will be recognized at the American Shorthorn Association’s Awards Banquet. * Editor’s Note: Winners are selected through a point tally process based on points earned at various Regional shows and provided by the American Shorthorn Association and the Regional Shows. Point amounts are based on the designated show level. As with the reporting of show results, Shorthorn Country assumes no responsibility for partial or incomplete listings of multiple ownership of animals. Ownership information was provided by the American Shorthorn Association. We regret any errors or omissions which may have occurred.

Regional Qualifications To Qualify for Regional Points, an animal must be exhibited at a minimum of two (2) shows within the region. Any combination of the following shows will meet the regional qualifications: • Regional Show • Super Regional Show • National Show within the designated region Only shows that are attended within that region count towards that region’s points. A National Show within its region will count towards Regional Points, BUT Regional Shows do not count towards National Points. In order to be awarded the Regional Show Bull or Show Female of the Year, an animal must win a division within that region. In the event a regional show does not use the provided ASA Division breaks, the following policy will be used: Any points that an animal receives at a regional show where ASA division breaks are not used, the animal and points will be moved to the proper division that the animal qualifies for based on ASA Show Classifications.

Family Ties breed represents a different cow family. Each family has their strong suits and when brought back to the operation, or the Shorthorn breed in our case, we go together to make the best breed possible. Bringing a mix of different cow families back to your operation allows you to not only expand your operation but make it the strongest you can. Our breed is the same. We love welcoming new families and getting them involved. This only makes our breed better! Without being in the Shorthorn breed, the family breed to say the least, we would have never met these people who we now call our Shorthorn family who took time out of their own busy lives to help us out. I have been very fortunate to grow my Shorthorn family and I’m so thankful I’ve been able to do that! =

Words of Advice

Growing up, the Shorthorn breed had always been called the family breed, and I’ve been able to experience some situations that show this on a real level. With no other breed can you be driving through Kansas and have a truck breakdown, only to know someone who lives in the very same town willing to loan you a truck for a week while yours gets fixed. With no other breed can you be on your way to Texas and have a truck break down and be able to make a phone call to some close friends who volunteer to go out of your way to pick up your trailer and store it for you. Other than the very unfortunate truck breakdowns, the only thing these stories have in common is the friends who you consider family being there to help you in a time of need. I like to look at the Shorthorn breed as a cattle operation. Every family in the

As a leader I plan to advocate for helping youth leaders transition from young adults involved in showing livestock to being more involved in leadership roles within their local state breed associations.” Haylee Ferguson currently attends University of Tennessee, Knoxville where she is working toward a Food and Agricultural Business major. Haylee is the daughter of Kevin and Phyllis Ferguson of Rockvale, Tennessee. Haylee has a background in Shorthorns and works to improve her genetics through AI and

Sexing Technologies and 605 Sires Open Semen Sorting Lab NAVASOTA, Texas — Global livestock semen sorting leader and innovator Sexing Technologies® (ST) is partnering with preeminent U.S. beef reproductive services company 605 Sires to establish a semen sorting lab at 605’s facility in Marion, South Dakota. The lab will produce frozen sexsorted semen for customers as well as for use in 605’s in-vitro fertilization (IVF) work. Having a sorting lab onsite is a convenient, cost-saving measure that allows 605 staff to monitor quality control of semen and embryos more closely. “We want to create a high-quality product for our customers here in the Midwest,” said Sammi Schrag, who will manage the lab and is part of the family

that launched 605 Sires in 2017. ST’s industry-leading sex sorting process separates X chromosome (female) bearing sperm from Y chromosome (male) bearing sperm through a process called flow cytometry. This provides customers with semen that is more than 90 percent accurate for the desired gender and achieves conception rates comparable to conventional (unsorted) semen used for artificial insemination. ST, based in Navasota, Texas, operates semen sorting labs around the world. 605 Sires is a full-service semen collection center that collects, freezes and stores semen from customers’ herd sires as well as offering IVF and embryo transfer services. For more information on 605’s service

offerings or the new sorting lab, contact Sammi Schrag via email, samantha. schrag@stgen.com or by phone, 605925-7473. =
