COMMODORE’S LOG

Hello Friends.....the dog days of summer are almost behind us! Members were welcomed back to the downtown Clubhouse on August 8th. The Club was extremely busy on opening day. A brief recap of shutdown projects completed this year include the moving of the bakery kitchen downstairs, as well as relocating the catering kitchen from downstairs to upstairs. The shutdown also gave our hard-working staff some much needed time to rest, relax and get ready for the upcoming busy season.

As a reminder, the Beach Club at Pass-a-Grille will be closed for shutdown from September 5th through September 20th, and will reopen on September 21st. Thank you for your patience during this period.

MEMBER INFORMATIONAL MEETINGS -

scheduled for September 5th & September 28th - You are encouraged to attend if you would like more information on the Master Facilities Plan. This will be a great opportunity for you to meet with Club leadership to get all of your questions answered. The meetings will be held from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm in the ballroom.

Thank you for a great year of membership. As of this writing, our membership totals 2,500. We have now reached our membership target. We look forward to the upcoming start of the 2023-2024 fiscal year. The Annual Meeting and Board of Directors Election will be held on October 10th. Additionally, we will be holding two “Meet the Candidate” nights. The first event will be held on September 26th followed by another event on October 3rd. The Nominating Committee has presented a great slate of candidates. Please plan to come and get to know them.

Some other important dates to save on your calendar: October 14th: Fall Poker Run – A casual and fun boating event starting from the Pass-a-Grille Clubhouse; October 22nd: Member Appreciation Party – This event is complimentary to all members and is the Club’s chance to say “thank you” for your membership; November 11th: Commodore’s Ball 2023 – The premier Yacht Club social event. Happy Fall to you, our valued members!

Cordially, Brian K. Smith, Commodore

General Manager’s Log

As summer ends later this month, kids are back in school, and the heat is still dialed up, we still must be mindful of the busiest time for hurricanes in this region. With that said, being prepared is the number one defense. We were lucky last year, and we can only hope for the same this year. In the meantime, have your plan in place and ready to execute.

The downtown Club’s annual shut down took place July 24th through August 7th. Within that time, we accomplished quite a bit when it comes to general cleaning and upkeep of the Club. The main project was moving our Banquet operations back upstairs and our bakery downstairs as it was years ago. This will help in being much more efficient in Banquets as well as in our day-to-day a la carte operations. Finally, our new garage arm gates are in full operation with most members cars registered and tagged. With any new roll out there will be obstacles that we will face and conquer, please be patient as we all go through this process together.

As you well see the dock project is underway. Please be sure to check out a more comprehensive update from our Port Committee Chairman, Fred Higham. Moving forward, we are expecting our new docks to arrive mid to late October with installation following the J-70 Worlds event we are hosting here on October 27th through November 5th.

The BROC (Building Replacement Oversight Committee) has been formed and has started their charge in the development of a comprehensive plan for our new Clubhouse. We are very much in the early stages of the work that will come out of this committee; in which we will be sure to communicate regularly with our membership of their progress. To begin this transparent process, we will be holding two Master Plan Member Informational Meetings on September 5th and again on September 28th, from 5:30 - 7:00 pm. This is your opportunity to meet one-on-one with Club Leadership to learn how the Master Facility Plan came about, and how the future of our Club will be secured.

Congratulations to, Kerrie Paquette, who will be transitioning into the Member Relations Manager role. Kerrie has been an amazing asset to the St. Petersburg Yacht Club team for 19 years, most recently serving as our Pass-a-Grille Clubhouse Manager. Prior to joining SPYC, Kerrie spent over 15 years working as an office manager. She will continue to be a wonderful representative for the Club and liaison for members. Congratulations Kerrie! Over at Pass-a-Grille, in addition to her Beverage duties, Delora Croteau, will be overseeing the Beach Club as the new Pass-a-Grille Clubhouse Coordinator. Delora has been a key asset to our team since 2008. She is looking forward to continuing to work with the membership at that location. Congratulations Delora!

In addition to these two promotions, we have added a crucial Team Member in our culinary operation. Troy McCue, our new Executive Sous Chef, will oversee the overall a la carte operations at our downtown Clubhouse. Troy comes to us with an impressive background, starting at the Tampa Yacht & Country Club many years ago. After leaving Tampa and making the move to St. Petersburg he took a Sous Chef position at Birch and Vine downtown St. Pete. During the pandemic an opportunity came along at the St. Petersburg Pier, his team designed the menus, plates, and presentation for Teak and Pier Teaki. Since joining SPYC, Troy immediately felt at home with family, and we couldn’t be happier to have him here. He is going to make a great addition to Chef Christian’s Team!

In closing, and as we close in on another successful fiscal year here at SPYC, the staff and I want to thank the entire membership for the great year we have all had! Please keep in mind that Pass-a-Grille will be shut down from September 5th through September 20th for some maintenance and for staff to take some well-deserved rest before starting another successful season. Cheers,

ACTIVE NOMINEES FOR THE Board of Directors 2023-2024 INTERMEDIATE Kate Clardy Brad DeMint

JODY ABRAMS Active Boat Member Since 2015

I grew up in Louisiana and was part of Pontchartrain Yacht Club’s first opti fleet. This love of sailing helped lead me to Florida in 2011. My wife, Angela, and I have five wonderful children. My oldest son enjoyed sailing in the Catamaran world during his teen years, and currently my daughter enjoys sailing her opti with the SPYC Race Team. I also campaign the Melges 32, Arista, in the local area. I learned from my father that it is important to be involved in your Yacht Club, not only for yourself but for the next generation of sailors. I believe that serving in various roles of an organization is a way to give back to a sport that we care about so much.

FRED BICKLEY, JR. Active Boat Member Since 1998

I grew up at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club and have represented it as a sailor since the age of seven. I became a member as soon as I turned 21, and was actively involved as an Intermediate Member. My years as member of the Board, various committees, and as a sailing coach gave me insight into the Club workings. I met my wife during the Regata del Sol al Sol to Isla Mujeres, and proposed to her here at this Club. SPYC is a special place to me, and I believe I have and always will contribute to the Club as a member, a sailor, and hopefully again as a Board member.

FRANK FRAZE Active Member Since 1984

I was born in Gainesville, Florida but raised in St. Petersburg and have lived here nearly all of my Life (59 years). I grew up sailing at the St. Petersburg YC Sailing Center. After attending the University of Florida and graduating with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in architecture, I then moved back to St. Petersburg to start my career. I have an Architectural Engineering Firm in downtown St. Petersburg and am married with one grown son; who is also a member. I’ve been a member for 39 years and enjoyed my past terms serving on the Board and on several Committees. I am invested in SPYC and this community, and have been proud to be a contributor to the Club and its members.

MARY HACKER Active Member Since 2008

My love of yachting came by way of the Great Lakes, spending my first 21 summers boating and fishing in Sandusky, Ohio with my family on “The Mary Jane.” I have lived first-hand what the water can do for a kid growing up. My leadership and technical skills were honed by Price Waterhouse, Deloitte and Touché and later as VP/CFO of two separate banks and a bank holding company in Sarasota, Florida. I have enjoyed the camaraderie of working with the PassA-Grille Woman’s Club as Treasurer and the City of St. Pete Beach as Chair of the Finance Committee over the last 8 and 10 years, respectively. I remain committed to the hard work and dedication required to move our Club forward.

FREDERICK HIGHAM Active Boat Member Since 1996

I have been a member of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club for over 25 years and practiced law in St. Petersburg for over 45 years. The first Club Committee I served on was the Race Committee for which I continue to volunteer. I was appointed Chairman of the Marina Focus Group in 2019 and currently serve as Chairman of the Marina Redevelopment Oversight Committee which is overseeing the redevelopment of our Downtown Marina. I am excited to bring this project to a conclusion and provide the Club with a world-class marina. I want to see the Club continue its international racing and boating heritage and continue to promote its waterfront activities.

MICHAEL MAGIDSON Active Member Since 2020

I am a Pinellas County native and grew up as a member of Carlouel Yacht Club on Clearwater Beach - my great-grandparents were among the founding members - and I have always enjoyed the social atmosphere that private clubs offer. I am a local lawyer with the Johnson Pope firm and have three school-age children. I primarily use the Club for social activities - dining, hosting clients, friends and family, and as a place for after-work get-togethers. I am interested in serving on the Club’s Board of Directors at this time since I think this is a critical time in the Club’s history as we replace the downtown clubhouse and position the Club for success in its next century.

ROB MATTHES Active Boat Member Since 2016

I am a veteran of the US Navy where I worked on the nuclear capable Talos Missile System. I am an active boater and a member of SPYC for 7 years. I started boating/sailing in Chicago over 36 years ago on a J22. I have served on the Cruising Fleet Committee, Port Committee and Finance Committee. I am the Founder and President of two Technology Companies, which were started from the ground up, where tough decisions were made over the 25 years. Running two companies takes passion, focus and dedication, it’s important to listen to customers/members to set and achieve goals within financial constraints. These are the experiences I bring to the SPYC Board of Directors.

PATRICK RYAN Active Boat Member Since 2021

Joining SPYC in 2021, following our son, has been a great fit for my wife and I in this season of our life, and refreshed a tradition her parents started over 50 years ago at Pass-a-Grille YC. Since becoming a member, I’ve enjoyed contributing to the Membership Committee by using my 45 years of banking experience.

My family and I are excited about SPYC’s future. I am happy to use my community experience, which includes service as Trustee Committee Chairman at my church, as well as my financial background, to help the Club maintain its status as a quality investment for families in St. Petersburg. I hope to serve the Club as a Board Member and continue to positively impact future growth and development.

DEBBIE STOREY Active Boat Member Since 2020

I am an active member of the Club, a member of the Cruising Fleet for several years, and serve on the Cruising Fleet Committee. I also serve on the Finance Committee, giving me insight into the operations and finances of the Club.

I’m passionate about the future of our Club. We’re at an important point in our evolution, and I’d like to play a role in helping us shape that future, and represent the voices of our diverse membership base. I spent 33 years with AT&T, leading big operations, eventually as Officer and EVP. Retiring in 2016, and became the President & CEO of the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas, executing a financial turnaround and successfully leading the organization through COVID. KATE CLARDY Intermediate Member Since 2018

I began sailing a decade ago in the BVI during a leadership training course. That summer sparked a love of sailing and led me to the decision to attend USFSP to continue sailing and delve into the world of racing. St. Pete’s sailing community welcomed me with open arms, and soon, I became a proud member of this Club where I passionately pursued my place among the Salty Sisters. Currently, I’m serving as Marketing Chair on the Ocean Racing Committee, eagerly preparing to contribute to the success of our upcoming racing season. My unwavering passion for sailing, Club commitment, and my SS experience uniquely qualify me to contribute to the board of our beloved Club. I’ll uphold our highest standards and be a committed voice.

BRAD DEMINT Intermediate Member Since 2021

As a St. Petersburg native and graduate of Northeast High School, I am deeply engaged in our community. Professionally I am the senior account executive at Greenleaf Title and host of the “How to Win with Brad DeMint” podcast. I am committed to the Club’s success, and aim to contribute my skills and passion as a Board member. Recognizing the potential of the Yacht Club’s development, I leverage my extensive real estate experience to envision growth and enhanced facilities. With a talent for identifying opportunities, I’m dedicated to strategically approaching this development for the benefit of all members. I’ve also served on the Entertainment Committee for the past 2 years planning fun, successful Club events and meeting new people, and look forward to serving you.

DOWNTOWN MARINA PROGRESS

The redevelopment of the SPYC Downtown Marina is well underway. The marina was vacated as of June 1, 2023. During June and July our staff was busy preparing for the demolition.

Items including cleats, line hangers, piling caps, access points, cameras, life rings, fire extinguishers, and floating ladders were removed for repurposing at other SPYC locations. The Staff removed the power pedestals for resale to members and others and relocated the floating docks and access ramps to the Sailing Center. They removed the awnings and benches and decommissioned the utilities.

On June 26, 2023, I visited the SF Marina Factory outside of Gothenburg, Sweden , to see the fabrication of our docks. I was impressed with the production techniques and quality control procedures. The factory has a concrete plant on site where they mix the cement and aggregate while constantly monitoring the water and air content of the slurry. The individual dock sections are constructed with EPS Styrofoam cores and protected steel reinforcements. Test samples are taken from the pour for each dock section. The samples are strength tested at 7, 14 and 28 days after casting. Each section is custom designed and cast with channels through the foam and concrete to accommodate our unique utility requirements. All utility chases are located inside the cast sections. The section design drawings were pre-approved by ATM, our consulting engineers, and Speeler and Associates, our general contractor, before they were cast. The factory has 5 production lines, and 4 lines are dedicated to producing our docks. Our dock system includes individual floating concrete sections of varying sizes. As of today, 21 docks have been cast.

It is expected that the last of our units will be cast by September 1, 2023. Once cured and finished they will be loaded on a ship for transport to Tampa Bay. Several photos of our completed docks, and docks in progress are included with this report.

As of this writing, the shipping schedule has not been finalized. Our marina expected completion date will be updated as shipping and receipt dates are finalized. It is exciting to see this project, which has been in the works for the last four years, come to fruition. With a 480-volt, three phase electrical system, the new marina has a significant electrical upgrade. In addition to our permanent slips the new marina will have 470 linear feet of floating dock along the north side for use as flexible transient docking. This could allow docking of 4 -100 footers, or sixteen 25 footers, or any mix in between; that mix can change hourly depending on member demand.

I look forward to the completion of this project which will provide our members with a world class amenity to enjoy long into the future.

Working in small batches transfer the mixture to a blender and emulsify over high speed.

· Let soup mixture cool in refrigerator and when chilled add heavy cream and half & half. Taste and adjust seasonings. Serve chilled with garnish.

CRUISING FLEET

Alittle (or even a lot of) summer heat did not deter the Cruising Fleet. We’ve had a fun-filled summer with monthly cruises, a summer party and Day Tripper outings. Fortunately, our monthly cruise destinations all featured pools where cruisers could gather, refreshing drink in hand, for our summer version of docktails!

June’s cruise to Clearwater YC was organized by Port Directors Jeff & Sue Cooper who kept cruisers guessing as to what the group team-building event might entail. The spirited team competition involved assembling rocking moose (yes, moose), under direction of a captain and first mate communicating via headset with the Jablonsky-Cross team taking first place! After careful quality control inspections, the finished moose were delivered to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital.

Longboat Key Club was our destination in July, with Port Directors Allen & Pam Thomas, sharing their favorite beach getaway with the group. On Friday, we enjoyed docktails at shaded picnic tables, dinner at Portofino’s and a tour of the Gessner’s beautiful new Maritimo. Saturday included lunch and beach time hosted by the Thomas’, afternoon pool docktails, and a spectacular evening lightning storm (thankfully, everyone was safely docked)!

July also included a summer party at Pass-a-Grille where 60 cruisers enjoyed a fantastic buffet and social time. The Day Tripper outings were to Tiki Docks in June and Davis Island YC in July. The weather was especially nice for the DIYC trip allowing most to travel by boat. Our two August cruises to Tampa Y&CC will be covered next month.

We have been busy planning our 2024 calendar and appreciate members’ responses to our annual survey. We will preview 2024 plans at our September 7th luncheon which will also feature renowned weather forecaster and router Chris Parker of the Marine Weather Center. Thanks to Garry Haas for arranging an impressive lineup of speakers this fall!

Speakers for Cruising Fleet Meetings:

* Sep 7th lunch - Chris Parker, Chief Forecaster and Stormy Stickle, Meteorologist, Marine Weather Center

* Oct 5th dinner - Terry Fluke, Executive Dir., Tampa Bay Pilots Association

* Nov 2nd lunch - Chris Steinocher, CEO, St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce

RIDERS CLUB

In mid-July, club members Robert & Terry Hopkins and Bob Frazee, along with 3 other individuals, left on a motorcycle adventure to the Canadian Maritimes. Since most of us were departing from different points, we decided to meet up in Bar Harbor, Maine. After a trip of 2 to 4 days we all made it to Bar Harbor. We then took the ferry to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. After spending the night in Yarmouth, we rode along the eastern coast of Nova Scotia to Halifax, NS where we spent a couple days sightseeing. We visited the Citadel Army Fort

Our next stop was Cape Breton, New Brunswick, where we spent 2 days exploring the Cabot Trail, and the Cape Breton Highlands National Forest. The Cabot Trail is considered one of the top ten motorcycle rides in North America, and it didn’t disappoint us; except for the weather which was mostly cloudy with some light rain for part of the day.

After leaving Cape Breton, we rode to Caribou, NB and picked up another ferry, which took us to Prince Edward Island. From the ferry dock in Wood Islands, PEI a 90-minute ride got us to Charlottetown, PEI, where we stopped for lunch. Robert and Terry decided to spend a couple more days exploring PEI. The rest of us continued west across PEI and took the bridge back to Port Elgin, NB, where we spent the night.

At this point, the weather was threatening to take a turn for the worse, so the plans to go to Newfoundland were scrapped and it was decided to start the trip home. The next couple days got a little tricky as a series of storms was crossing our path SW back to the US. We did manage to avoid the worst of the storms back to St John, NB and then on to Calais, ME the next day, although we did get caught in a few showers. From Calais, we continued SW through Maine and stopped in Gorham, NH for the night.

From Gorham, the next leg took us through the mountains in NH and VT. Then a ferry ride across Lake Champlain into NY and into the Adirondack Mts to Lake Placid. After a night in Lake Placid, we headed back to central NY, where we each went our separate ways.

What a great summer at Ladies Beach Club! With the launch of many new Special Interest Groups (SIG), we stayed connected and entertained! We played plenty of Mah Jongg this summer by adding play on five Thursdays in addition to our Monday sessions! We played Retro Mah Jongg three times using first the 1965 National Mah Jongg League card followed by the 1979 card. Both cards were very different from what we are accustomed. We also invited the Mah Jongg players from the Woman’s Club downtown when they were closed for two weeks. It was great fun!

The Around Town special interest group met three times during the summer, led by Beverly Burchard. We attended two productions at the Earlybird Dinner Theater on Ulmerton Road and went on a Starlite Dinner Cruise.

We are looking forward to more exciting SIGs starting this fall! Patsy Warmack, our SIG Ambassador, is coordinating book clubs, creative groups, and looking for ideas!

Cyndi Deermount has planned an exciting year of programs for us. Starting in September we will step back in time when St. Pete celebrated the “Festival of States”. It was to mark the end of winter and to encourage SnowBirds to stay longer. Residents were organized by their home state - we will recreate the festival and encourage members to sit at the table marked with their birth state.

AWing Shooter tagged Two Way introduced us to a new shooting venue. Wednesday evenings, at the Skyway Trap & Skeet Club, is Annie Oakley night. It’s a game very similar to knock out on a basketball court. However it’s played on a trap range with shotguns. The players line up in an arc 27 yards behind the machine that throws the target. Starting at the left, three are players designated to shoot, in order, at a target. If shooter 1 misses, shooter 2 takes a shot and if shooter 2 misses, shooter 3 tries. A mark is recorded if you miss and one of the following shooters breaks the target. If it’s the 3rd shooter, shooters 1 and 2 both get a mark. If all 3 miss, no marks are received. On the next target, positions 2, 3 and 4 are the shooters. There is one other important rule. If a shooter ahead of you breaks the target and you shoot anyway, you earn another mark. When you earn a mark, you move to the end of the line. A player is knocked out of the game with a 4th mark. The game continues until only one shooter remains. This game is very challenging, loaded with friendly yet unwelcome criticism and is an absolute blast.

So who was Annie Oakley? She was an American sharpshooter who starred in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show. At Skyway there is a modern day Annie Oakley. When Ashley shows up on Wednesday evening all the male shooters get noticeably nervous.

RV LAND CRUISERS

Planning an RVing trip to Alaska? If so, you should consider including the Klondike Loop route, an interesting deviation from the Alaska Highway. This route takes you from Whitehorse to historic Dawson City in the Yukon, then the Top of the World Highway and to Chicken Alaska, ending in Tok:

Dawson City, Yukon, only 165 miles from the Artic Circle, is situated on the Yukon River at its confluence with the Klondike River. With the discovery of gold (aka the Klondike Gold Rush 1896-1899) thousands of prospectors descended on this area making Dawson City Yukon’s first capital when Yukon became a separate territory in 1898. After World War II, and the completion of the Alaska Highway (which bypassed Dawson City), the capital was moved to Whitehorse in 1952. Even so, the City of Dawson has maintained its eclectic gold rush feel with boardwalks and saloons, and gold mining. Although it’s population today is just over 1,500, it is the second largest town in Yukon (Whitehorse being the largest). From Dawson City, the George Black Ferry crosses the Yukon River, to the Top of the World Highway.

Top of the World Highway is just that, a super scenic road (unpaved/ gravel) with top-of-the-world views. It connects Dawson City with Chicken, AK.

Chicken, Alaska, frequently noted on lists of unusual place names, was supposedly named by early gold miners who wanted to name their camp "ptarmigan" (now the official state bird of Alaska). Since they couldn’t agree on the spelling, they settled on Chicken since that is the common name for ptarmigan.

Although extremely remote, and with a population of maybe twelve, Chicken is still an active gold mining town with three businesses and is getting more and more traffic each year as the Klondike Loop continues to grow in popularity among travelers.

To join the group and keep up with our events, where we will be making adventures happen, please contact:

SALTY SISTERS

July was an active month, despite the absence of organized Wednesday morning sailing. Co-captain Valerie Massingill and Past Captain Gloria Davis led an excellent educational series on Race Committee, and Nita George provided bridge lessons. Newbies got to practice their new skills in the ladies cardroom after lunch.

Hospitality Chair Mik

Severini organized a pool party on July 26th at Bayfront Tower. Forty-five Salties splashed, drank and dined together, enjoying the magnificent views of the St. Pete waterfront.

Her participation has included innumerable committee or safety boats here and abroad (rescuing many sailors), coordinating and teaching safety and rescue topics such as Safety at Sea, CPR, and “Stop the Bleed”, chairing major events and activities including Lightning, International A-Cats North Americans Championship, and as a member of the team for the Regata del Sol al Sol. Additionally she has served as Jury Secretary for Helly Hansen (NOOD). Salty Sisters are very proud of Kathy’s achievements!

July “sailing” has been a bit of a challenge for the Broads as our prams have been loaned to the Sailing Center for use in the Youth Summer Sailing Camp. We’ve made due with a bit of social and on one rainy day, accompanied by fascinated staff, some rousing and rowdy RummyCube games. We’re on track to be back on the water again this month.

Come join us for Saturday morning for some fun sailing and racing. You can participate as a sailor, race committee, or safety ashore. For more information about becoming a Broad Reacher, contact Carol Hansen at Carol@dband1.com

We are excited to send a team to the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs First Annual Inter-Club Golf Competition on Friday and Saturday, September 22nd & 23rd, at the Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club, located in Palm City, Florida.

Our monthly scramble format outings at local courses around the Tampa Bay area will begin late September through December. Stay tuned for more details. Please direct all future membership inquiries for the SPYC Golf group to Bekah Rush at: rush.rebekah@gmail.com or come meet us in person at one of our monthly meetings.
