The ultimate workout plan

ick and tired of the same old gym routine? Well, we’ve got just the thing for you. We’ve teamed up with LeanSuits Fitness (the newest fitness craze that’s sweeping Brissy) to give seven lucky Style readers a chance to win the ultimate workout plan.

The fitness studio, which will be celebrating its first birthday next month, utilises EMS (that’s Electrical Muscle Stimulation) technology for workouts – so, pretty much each client is given a customisable suit equipped with the new technology to exercise in.

The best part? The suit activates 90 per cent

of your muscle fibres, compared with just 30 per cent during old-fashioned training. That means you can get a complete, full-body workout in just 20 minutes (yep, no more slaving away at the gym for hours!). It’s also low impact, meaning it’s gentle on the joints, which is a great option for those who have current or past injuries.

Competition entrants will be in the running to win a 12-week 12-pack plan valued at $820 plus two body scans valued at $120. The team at LeanSuits are also giving away a five-pack plan valued at $350 plus one body scan for $60.

The competition opens 1 March and closes 31 March, with the winner drawn on 1 April, so

Prize breakdown

• Six people will win 1 x class per week for 12 weeks ($4,968) + 2 x body scans each ($720)

• One person will win 1 x five pack ($350) + 1 x body scan ($60)

TOTAL VALUE: OVER $6,098

keep your eyes peeled, it could be you!

LeanSuits Fitness currently has two locations in Brissy, Toowong, and Newmarket, with more locations on the horizon, So, if you’re looking for some fitness inspo, why not try something totally new and enter?

EDITOR’S NOTE

Ah yes, finally it’s autumn, my favourite season of the year – not too hot, not too cold (aka, the perfect weather for iconic fashion moments!). If you’re like me and love AW clothing, then you’re going to fall (pun intended!) head over heels for our fabulous new issue.

On this month’s cover, we feature Wintergarden –we had the absolute best time shooting this autumnal campaign – think chic trench coats, interesting layers, and rich autumnal colours (if that’s not enough to entice you, the cover shoot images within this mag will!).

Inside, as always, we feature a slew of talented Brissy locals including The Queen of Crypto, Michelle Reeves, television beauty Sammie O’Brien, and Metro Arts CEO, Jo Thomas.

We’ve also dedicated an entire feature to the movers and shakers of the wellness industry world – from fitness trainers changing the way we traditionally work out, to health experts dabbling in the hyperbaric therapy space, you’ll definitely learn something new (I know, I did!).

There’s plenty more to discover inside, from a oneon-one chat with fashion powerhouse Shannon Thomas (founder of Désordre), how to nail the perfect passport photo, to an interesting read on why tinned fish is officially cool – she’s a doozy!

Jo Thomas

Meet the woman behind Metro Arts – the home of contemporary theatre, dance, cabaret, circus, art, and more!

Performance-maker, creative producer, and CEO and artistic director of Metro Arts, Jo Thomas certainly doesn’t do things in halves. Jo, who is originally from Toowoomba, started out as a budding actor freelancing across the country before making the transition to producing.

“When I moved to Brisbane, I was still creating performance work, but I also started producing my own work and the work of other independent artists,” she says. “This then transitioned into wonderful jobs with Queensland Music Festival, Brisbane Festival, and Circa, to name a few.”

Along the way, she also dabbled in PR management, managing a jazz band, teaching acting and drama, and even working as an editorial assistant – like we said, she doesn’t do things in halves!

Now as CEO and artistic director of Metro Arts, no day is

the same. “I jump around from artistic projects to budgeting to photo shoots, giving speeches, attending shows and exhibitions, contracting, board meetings, [and so on],” she says.

“Seeing artists and audiences connecting either in the gallery context or the theatre is very rewarding. I also love working with my team at Metro Arts (they’re all incredible at what they do!) and welcoming new artists and new artworks into the world!”

When she’s not heading to the latest art exhibition or show, Jo likes to spend her time admiring nature as the self-confessed tree-lover she is, trying her best at guitar, and brushing off her black-belt in aikido martial arts.

As for what’s instore for the year ahead, Jo says, “2023 will see Metro Arts expanding our operations at Norman Park Substation with even more support for visual artists and a workshop that can be accessed by artists and community alike.”

One of everything, please! We’re saying hello to the new autumn winter season at Wintergarden.

It’s official – the new season is finally here, and we’re looking forward to greeting the slightly cooler weather with a brand-new ‘drobe. And what better place to stock up on autumn winter fashion must-haves than at Wintergarden, Brisbane’s very own shopping mecca located in the centre of Queen Street Mall.

Offering the best in food, entertainment, and of course fashion, here you’ll find an impressive line-up of luxury and affordable retailers like Sheike (their latest drop is to die for – don’t walk, run!), Veronika Maine, Cue, COS, Zara, DISSH, lululemon, Seed Heritage, Nine West, and Dinosaur Designs (a fave in our Aussie accessory arsenal!). There’s also a variety of men’s boutique brands to choose from, such as M.J. Bale, Peter Jackson, Aquila, and R.M. Williams.

But, before you get your shop on, Wintergarden has shared their top AW styling tips – shopping has never been easier!

Layer, layer, layer

AW is here, which means it’s time to play up our looks, gals! Living in Queensland luxe layers can be tricky to achieve (thanks, humidity!), but there really isn’t anything else that signifies the autumn/winter season like adding some cute skivvy’s and outerwear options. Our go-to tip is to keep it light –opt for a tulle or light cottons when choosing tops to layer under other items. We might not be able to indulge in thick wool coats, but a timeless trench coat, like this one from Zara (pictured), is a perfect alternative for our sunny climate.

Oversized outerwear is in

They say bigger is better – and we tend to agree! Outerwear is a cornerstone of the AW season and this year our blazers, coats and jackets are taking a turn for the oversized. Inspired by the street style looks of European fashion weeks, boxy and exaggerated shapes will be the ‘it’ styles of the season. Comfy and cosy, these oversized shapes are the epitome of relaxed styling. Tip: for some definition, add a belt to your look!

Totally tonal

Don’t get us wrong, we love a colour-clashing moment, however this season is all about tonality and cohesion. We love our base colours of black, creams and beiges, however adding a pop of colour, such as khaki green, chocolate brown or a warm burnt orange, can elevate your look. All these tones are intrinsically complementary to each other so keeping to similar hues ensures instant outfit cohesion – sounds like a winner to us!

What’s old is chic again

Classic 1960s silhouettes are seeing a huge comeback this year with pencil skirts, cropped jackets, cigarette pants and turtlenecks popping up in retail stores everywhere. And we can’t forget about the classic platform heels and shoulder bags that have been dominating the accessories game.

Now that you have all the styling tools to rule the AW season, a trip to Wintergarden will not disappoint. PS don’t forget to take a short break at the food court in between shops – tuck into much-loved takeaway options like Guzman Y Gomez, Hokka Hokka, and Hanaichi, to name a few. For more of a restaurant experience, head up to Level 1 where you’ll find Grill’d and PappaRich (Strike Bowling and Holey Moley Golf Club are also on the same level if you’re in the mood for some good oldfashioned fun). And if you need to stock up on some everyday beauty staples, head to Mecca Maxima. WINTERGARDEN

DÉSORDRE

Glamour, glitz, and a lot of pink, we talk work and fashion with Shannon Thomas, owner, and founder of Désordre, the coolest new kid on the block at James Street.

Known for its luxury fashion and fun, eccentric pieces, Désordre Boutique is fast-becoming one of Australia’s leading fashion boutiques. Founded in 2009 by fashion powerhouse Shannon Thomas, the go-to party boutique, which started in funky, high-energy Darlinghurst, has made its way over to sunny Brisbane, and we can’t get enough! We sat down with Shannon to learn more about her savvy, entrepreneur ways.

How does it feel to be considered one of the best party-wear boutiques?

It’s still surreal. I don’t take it for granted at all, every single experience and every client is [still] really important to me. We are still self-funded and a small business, so it’s very difficult to do everything all the time, and be everywhere, so I’m trying to keep the standard as high as possible with the clothes. It is slow fashion and really special standout pieces. I just keep setting the bar higher and higher for myself. I didn’t realise I was such a perfectionist; I certainly don’t think I was this way in high school ha-ha!

How was Désordre born?

There were so many beautiful designers around, but every single store had the same offering, and it would never feel that special. I was also motivated by editorials and all their beautiful imagery; I was just so hungry for it.

Story behind the name?

It’s French for mess, so that’s how it originated. It’s like a really beautiful mess. And when I started the business, we did like pop-ups in different locations, and I was only 21 and I was friends with lots of designers. I had these grand ideas with no money, so it was a good way to start it.

Where did your passion for fashion come from?

My mum worked in a retail store on Oxford Street [in Sydney], literally almost before I could remember. And I use to tag along on sick days… folding t-shirts on the floor, watching her serve etc. Every experience I’ve had with fashion was a good one. That’s literally what gives me the most happiness, someone coming in and finding something you can see they light up in.

Why James St and where to next?

A lot of Brissy clients reached out, and asked when are we going to be next. I just love Brisbane, I love Queensland –you can show skin and have fun with it, it’s just really on brand for us. I’m not opposed to more, but not this year. I think I just want to really focus in on everything.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I feel like I’m a bit erratic with my days. I hopefully wake up before my daughter and just check-in if there’s any emails. I do Zooms morning and night. When I go to Melbourne or Brisbane, I get up at 5am. I try to exercise every morning. I’m usually jumping between the stores… my favourite days are in store with clients.

Any advice for others wanting to start their own fashion label or boutique?

It’s definitely finding a niche. So, for me, you know the reason everything we have is so wow and party is because that’s what people are coming to us for. I wasn’t having success when I would be doing basic swim or a t-shirt, the odd one does well, but people don’t come to us for that.

What celebrity would you most like to dress and why?

I just saw Babylon on the weekend, and I just love Margot Robbie. She’s great, she’s a real body, and she’s still real. I would love to dress her, she would be fun.

What trends are you loving?

Denim, OMG, it’s not going anywhere! It’s denim overload at the moment, wide-leg denim, long denim skirts, short denim skirts, everything you can imagine that’s usually done in a black silk is denim. TO READ THE INTERVIEW IN FULL, HEAD TO STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

THE SMART GIRL’S GUIDE TO NFTS

with Michelle Reeves

Ever wondered what the heck NFTs are? Me too...

Co-founder and CEO of MAVION (a global fashion and NFT marketplace), ‘Queen of crypto’, and power-list veteran, Brissy local Michelle Reeves is leading the charge when it comes to NFTs, so it was only fitting we sat down with her for a casual chat. From explaining what NFTs actually are and how they work, Michelle answers all our burning questions...

Hi Michelle, thanks for chatting with us! So, to answer the question on everyone’s lips... what actually are NFTs?

To understand what an NFT (Non-Fungible Token) is, it’s helpful to understand what ‘fungible’ means. Fungible is an item that is interchangeable, like a $1 coin. All $1 coins have the same value, regardless of who is holding it. Non-fungible is an item that cannot be replicated, there is only one, for example, your own personal iPhone.

A NFT is a unique digital asset stored on blockchain [technology] that cannot be replicated. It can be anything digital such as a jpeg (art), audio file (music), video file, or even a QR code. There can only be one true owner or holder of the NFT, and therefore only they can unlock its benefits.

How does an NFT work?

NFTs are stored on blockchain, which is a technology that cannot be copied, deleted, or edited. Blockchain is a digital ledger that records every action that takes place in real time as it happens. It’s like a digital truth serum which makes it perfect for authenticating ownership and verifying products like designer goods, art or limited-edition items that may need to be authenticated or prove ownership.

Once an NFT is created it exists forever and the possibilities become endless. NFTs ‘live’ on the blockchain in a crypto wallet. A crypto wallet (e.g., MetaMask, Coinbase, Zelus, Trust Wallet) store a user’s personal assets like cryptocurrency and NFTs.

What are they used for?

NFTs unlock many capabilities and benefits across many industries. A few examples include:

• Art – artists can authenticate their art and monetise their creations beyond the first sale

• Collectibles and memberships – NFTs can be used to give members exclusive access to content, events, merchandise, and more

• Fashion – NFTs can reward loyal customers, give them access to exclusive benefits, product drops, and experiences

• Music – NFTs can be used to sell and trade unique digital music assets, such as album artwork, music videos, and audio files

• Identity – NFTs can be used to represent and secure personal identity information, such as passport details, medical records, and other sensitive information

A lot of creatives are now selling their art as NFTs, do you believe they’re the future of fine art collecting?

NFTs have the potential to revolutionise the way fine art is bought, sold, and collected, by providing a secure and verifiable way to prove ownership and authenticity of digital art.

Why are NFTs becoming so popular?

Overall, the combination of unique ownership, monetisation opportunities, decentralisation, scarcity, and easier accessibility has made NFTs an attractive option for a wide range of individuals and industries, contributing to their growing popularity.

Should we all be jumping on the NFT train?

In 2002 people asked, should every business have a website? It was new and confusing. Many didn’t understand the ‘web’ and they didn’t have the tools to use it with ease. Luxury brands like Chanel resisted until 2016 when they finally launched their ecommerce website. In 2023, we know that a website is an essential component to operate a modern-day business and for consumers, it’s very easy to use. The same is true for NFTs.

Who are making waves in the NFT space?

Brands have tested specific ideas and some have been more successful than others. Nike and Dolce & Gabbana have dropped NFTs and focused on digital fashion. Alo Yoga dropped a physical clothing collection that came with an NFT, and it unlocks access for holders to visit their wellness studio and attend exclusive yoga classes in Miami, Los Angeles, and New York City.

At MAVION, we’re focused on connecting physical and digital fashion to create new opportunities to connect consumers who love limited edition fashion with global designers.

Lastly, are they here to stay?

The future of NFTs depends on several factors: technological advancements, regulatory developments, and market demand. One thing’s for sure though, NFTs are changing the way we think about ownership, access, and community in the physical and digital world.

WELLNESS LEADERS

FEELIN’ GOOD

The wellness industry is growing rapidly – from highaltitude fitness classes to hyperbaric therapy chambers and EMS (that’s Electrical Muscle Stimulation) training suits, we take a look at the trailblazers leaving their mark on the wellness industry – it’s never been ‘sexier’ to put you and your health first.

Kath Merlo & Kristy Morris

Co-founders, KAILO

Kath Merlo and Kristy Morris set out on their path of wellness after they realised there was a gap in the Australian market for a luxury wellness destination.

“Ultimately, we wanted to create the kind of space that we would both love to be customers of!” they said. “While we both came from different backgrounds prior to opening KAILO – [Kristy in Human Resources and Kath in marketing] – we have been passionate about the industry for some time.”

From the first time they met, the pair bonded over the wellbeing of their children. This led to the realisation they were both interested in helping other people achieve good health and wellness in their lives. Kristy and Kath opened KAILO in 2018 on James Street in the luxurious Calile Hotel. KAILO has now expanded to include luxury wellness products and events, positioning the centre as Australia’s leading elevated luxury wellness brand. In fact, KAILO has been awarded top luxury medispa in Australia for the past three years.

Most recently, the pair introduced a nutrition range, made up of collagen sachets targeted at gut, sleep, and skin health. They’re also set to launch a botanical skincare range, where they worked with a leading botanist, later this year.

“We hope that every experience our guests have with KAILO is a memorable one – whether it’s at our flagship medispa, an online purchase, or attending one of our events.”

“We have an incredibly committed team who are passionate about delivering exceptional [customer] service, which has created a community of loyal followers.”

Chris Miller has worn many hats – health coach, personal trainer, Chinese medicine doctor, massage therapist, soft tissue specialist, sports nutritionist, stay-at-home dad, and now founder of one Brisbane’s coolest new fitness studios, a.k.a LeanSuits Fitness.

LeanSuits Fitness, which will be celebrating its first birthday next month, is changing the way we traditionally work out with EMS (that’s Electrical Muscle Stimulation) training.

“Put simply, it’s a full-body workout using the wireless LeanSuits technology to stimulate muscle fibres while you exercise, causing muscle tissues to work harder and more effectively,” Chris explains. “Our LeanSuits activate 90 per cent of your muscle fibres, compared with just 30 per cent during old-fashioned training.”

That means you can get a complete, fullbody workout in just 20 minutes (yep, no more slaving away at the gym for hours!). It’s also low impact, meaning it’s gentle on the joints, which is a great option for those who have current or past injuries.

Chris, who has 20-plus years of coaching experience, knows all too well what it’s like to experience a health setback – he has had three knee reconstructions and overcame severe neurological conditions following a sinus tumour. Long story short, LeanSuits has helped Chris, who’s now 40, become the leanest and fitness he’s ever been in a fraction of the time, and now he’s on a mission to help others. Chris wants nothing more than to help other people live their best lives, whether that’s kicking a footy with their kids, or reaching new fitness goals.

Samara Searle has always had a passion for aesthetic medicine and all things beauty, however, before she made the move to the cosmetic world, she was working as an intensive care nurse for six years and with renowned plastic surgeons for three years.

“Nursing is a degree that can give you so many options, but aesthetic medicine has always been my passion,” she says. “The idea for Beauty Boost started back in 2018 when it was a side hustle, while I was working in intensive care.”

Years later, Samara, who has six years’ experience as an advanced cosmetic injector and trainer, decided to turn her side hustle into a full-blown business. Beauty Boost Aesthetic Clinic is now regarded as one of Brisbane’s premier aesthetic medicine clinics, offering a wide range of treatments, from anti-wrinkle, dermal fillers, PRP, and the new bio skin remodelling injections, to name a few.

While Samara’s love for the industry inspired her to open the clinic, her passion for enhancing natural beauty is what drove her company’s ethos.

“I wanted to break the stigma around cosmetic treatments by bringing natural beauty back to life,” she says. “We’re all unique in our own way, we should enhance what we already have.”

Samara says her favourite treatment to perform on clients is tear-trough filler – which is filler injected under the eyes to help with dark circles and hollowing. “This was always my biggest insecurity growing up and I’ve focused on honing my skills in this area.”

As for her two biggest anti-ageing tips –sunscreen and anti-wrinkle treatments of course!

We’re all UNIQUE in our own way.”

Dr Olwen Bishop BHSc (Acupuncture), owner of Zen Acupuncture in Ashgrove, may have fallen into acupuncture later in life (she originally studied interior design), but she’s always had a keen interest in the practice. Olwen, who grew up in Ireland, was fortunate enough to live next door to an acupuncturist.

“It fascinated me that something so simple like a few small needles could have such a huge effect,” she says. “When I was pregnant with my first child, I had carpal tunnel syndrome which was extremely painful. Nothing worked to relieve my pain, but my husband suggested acupuncture… within two sessions it was gone. From that day I knew I had to learn more about acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine.”

And that’s exactly what she did. Olwen, who’s been living in Brisbane for 18 years, enrolled in a four-year Bachelor of Health Science degree. After she received her degree, she advanced her studies in orthopaedic acupuncture under the guidance of world-renowned Orthopaedic Acupuncturist Richard Hazel, who is based in New York. This changed Olwen’s way of practicing with a greater focus on chronic pain and injuries. Olwen now runs Zen Acupuncture – which is derived from the Chinese and Sanskrit words for meditation – where she practices in traditional Chinese medicine, dietary therapy, cupping, electro-acupuncture, orthopaedic acupuncture (a form of acupuncture that focusses on treating musculoskeletal pain), as well as traditional acupuncture.

“Zen Acupuncture is a general practice, but my interests lie in chronic pain and injury recovery. Mental health, emotional support, and menstrual disharmony is secondary to this,” she says. “I want to give back to my community and make acupuncture accessible to everyone.” ZEN

I want to give back to my community.”
We are a curious and passionate bunch!”

Wirth

They say true empowerment begins with education, which certainly resonates with Kirsty Wirth, founder of Kultured Wellness. So much so, that in 2015 she decided to harness her passion for learning and transform it into a thriving business.

On top of their range of probiotic culture starters and gut health products, Kirsty, along with her brilliant team, are dedicated to supporting people’s gut and brain health in a holistic sense.

“We are a curious and passionate bunch! We live and breathe sharing the importance of rocking great gut and brain health,” she says.

Healing is at the core of Kultured Wellness, which is run solely online, particularly on a personal level for Kirsty, who attributes its inception to the need to troubleshoot and problem solve to save her son’s health and life.

So, why the strong focus on gut health? “It really is the seat of either wellness or disease for us. It can be our friend or foe,” she says. “Without an optimally functioning gut we can’t digest nutrients, make key components for our immune system, and [in many cases] our mental health declines. We’re also more prone to disease and autoimmune conditions.”

Thankfully, there are a few actionable steps to support your gut microbiome. “We can start simply by getting our hands in the dirt and surrounding ourselves with soil microbes and organisms, and eating fermented foods on a daily basis,” Kirsty explains. “That, and being part of a connected community that supports health and change!” KULTURED WELLNESS KULTEREDWELLNESS.COM @KULTUREDWELLNESS

This is a very unique therapy.”

Thanks to its many health benefits, hyperbaric chamber therapy is quickly becoming more and more popular in the health and wellness industry, and for good reason. Mathew Baker, who is a highly trained and experienced musculoskeletal therapist, remedial therapist, and body psychotherapist, and now founder of Hyperbaric O2 Health, has seen his fair share of illnesses and approaches to healing throughout his 20- plus years in the industry.

However, since introducing hyperbaric hydroxy therapy into his clinic five years ago, he has seen improvements almost instantaneously. “This is a very unique therapy that works with your body on a different level to heal,” Matt says.

For those of you who don’t know, hyperbaric hydroxy therapy is where you breathe in a combination of oxygen and hydrogen in a pressurised environment, like a chamber. Hydrogen targets the toxins in your body, while oxygen speeds up the healing process – it’s this unique combination that helps the overall recovery process. However, Matt notes, outcomes are different in everybody.

And this isn’t the only type of health services Matt and his team provide, others include musculoskeletal therapy, body psychotherapy, as well as remedial massage, energy healing, pain management, and counselling. Matt, who has treated many high-profile teams, such as the Brisbane Broncos and Socceroo’s football team, over the years is passionate about supporting clients on their rehabilitation journey.

As for the most rewarding part of his job? Matt says it’s seeing his patients recover from injury or chronic pain through treatment and getting their lives back on track.

Combining her passion for helping people to grow and thrive with her background in community advocacy, Ruth Limkin, CEO, The Banyans Healthcare, is steadfast on removing the barriers to accessing great healthcare.

“People’s health and wellbeing is a foundational aspect of their ability to discover a fullness and richness to life,” she says. “I have always been passionate about giving people the information, tools, and support to make great decisions and The Banyans Healthcare is a natural extension of this.”

With a dedication to providing the very best in residential rehabilitation, day programs, and outpatient care, the wonderful team at The Banyans delivers a clinically-rich treatment model, all focused on supporting the person’s wellbeing.

While the barriers to great healthcare have certainly begun to shift in the seven years since The Banyans Healthcare was founded, there’s still a lot of groundwork to do.

“Some of the ways I want to help remove barriers are to speak, write, and communicate about wellbeing, addiction, mental health, and the things we can do to optimise our health and performance in life, relationships, and work,” she says. “It’s so important that we normalise talking about this!”

With this in mind, Ruth would like to remind us to be intentional and make time for ourselves, even if the first step is simply doing a health and wellbeing check-up.

Dr Nicholas Kemp

When it comes to vein health, Dr Nicholas Kemp knows everything there is to know about it –from treatment options to do’s and don’ts for maintaining healthy veins.

Dr Kemp heads up his own clinic, The Leg Vein Doctor, in Auchenflower, where he sees patients from all over the country (he also runs a monthly satellite clinic in Toowoomba). The clinic offers a comprehensive range of modern and non-invasive treatments for varicose veins.

“It’s small but sanctuary-like,” he says. “Not only is it comfortable, but it’s very private as we just see one patient at a time. It’s exactly what I had in mind when I wanted to create The Leg Vein Doctor – offering the best practice treatment in a personalised way.”

So, how does one fall into the field of phlebology? Dr Kemp, who has worked all over the world as a doctor, says he became fascinated by phlebology while looking at treatment options for himself. He became so intrigued that he decided to pursue specialised training in the field, and he hasn’t looked back since.

“I have patients call me up to say they have just come back from the coast and worn a pair of shorts for the first time,” he says. “You can’t beat that feeling, it’s very rewarding.”

Dr Kemp’s patients vary from 18 to 81 and come from all walks of life. While he treats mainly women, 40 per cent of his clientele are also men.

“All the procedures we offer at our clinic are walk in/walk out.”

We pride ourselves on offering the best practice treatment in a personalised way.”

The popular saying, “you are what you eat” may be accurate after all. Cherry Wills, who heads up the Australian and New Zealand branch of global organisation Metabolic Balance, is incredibly passionate about helping people fuel their bodies with the right foods.

For those who don’t know, Metabolic Balance (which started in Germany 25-plus years ago) is an evidence-based, food-based plan that naturally restores overall balance to the body – put simply, a personalised nutrition plan that identifies the right food to eat for your body!

As a trained clinical nutritionist, Cherry sees people day in day out who are struggling with debilitating illnesses and chronic conditions with no idea where to turn.

“Finding foods that match you can have an enormous difference,” she says. “I know if I hadn’t known ‘my foods’, my health would be completely different today. (I turn 50 this September and I know my health is completely different to most soon-to-be 50-year-olds!).”

“People need an analysis to find their personal foods and this is why I’m so passionate about Metabolic Balance. We have over 190 certified practitioners offering Metabolic Balance now nationwide and my big aim is to raise awareness of the program so people know there is a solution when they need it.”

Cherry, who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Nutritional Therapy together with a PhD in Chemistry, divides her time between supporting clients with Metabolic Balance in her private practice in Cleveland and training and mentoring fellow practitioners in the Metabolic Balance method across Australia and New Zealand. As for her favourite part? Hearing about client transformations following their plans.

Prep and prime

Think of it this way – you wouldn’t take a clutch on an evening out without checking you have all the essentials, right? Just like how you shouldn’t do your makeup without prepping your skin.

Passport perfection

Here’s how to achieve a flawless passport photo (despite the bad lighting and emotionless facial expression!).

4

Plump it up

2

3

Bronze, bronze, bronze

Passport photos always tend to wash out your face, which is why intensifying your natural features with contour and bronzer is crucial – think defined cheekbones, winged eyeliner, and a subtle bronzed eye look.

Tip:

To avoid any reactions, be sure to test lip plumpers at least one week before any photos are taken! 5

When intensifying what you’ve already got you can’t look past your lips. Plump and shine them with products that subtly enhance.

Face base

Avoid harsh lines and patches by opting for a lightweight, buildable foundation. The Ere Perez Oat Milk Foundation is non-greasy, natural, and long-lasting!

Sleek is chic

Passport perfection doesn’t stop at the makeup – ensure you don’t have any stray hairs with Eleven Australia’s styling cream and when it comes to the brows, fluff them up with Endota Spa’s instant brow gel.

GET WITH THE FLOW

We chat to a leading obstetrician-gynaecologist on how to feel your best during your cycle.

If you’ve ever felt burdened by your period, you’re certainly not alone. But what if you could harness the power of your period to work for you, not against you?

Understanding the seasons of your cycle is extremely empowering, allowing you to create intuitive routines in line with your body’s needs. We asked obstetriciangynaecologist – and a leading voice of the movement – Dr Yas Pilgrim, how to get the most out of each phase.

Autumn (Luteal)

Estrogen drops and progesterone rises, causing energy levels to drop. Be gentle with yourself –you may feel more emotional than usual during this phase with PMS symptoms setting in.

You may experience food cravings, so opt for nutrient-dense foods like tofu, leafy greens, and magnesiumrich foods such as dark chocolate and cashews.

Exercise

Recovery and lower-impact exercise such as yoga or swimming.

Summer (Ovulation)

Estrogen peaks and luteinizing hormones increase. Your libido is heightened, and it’s the perfect time to push yourself, try something new, and let your social butterfly soar.

Reclaiming the 5–9 after your 9–5

What do you do when you’re off the clock? Here at Style HQ, the TikTok 5–9 routine trend has got us thinking about all things work-life balance.

Working so heavily in the digital sphere, when it comes to that 5pm knock off, my off-the-clock antics usually tend to involve a lot of switching off (both physically and mentally). Do not disturb on, you may spot me roller skating by the river, embracing a budget-friendly version of Gordon Ramsay, or journaling on the balcony. I’d like to say I’ve mastered the simplicity of ‘main character’ evenings purely due to practicality. My afternoons are a chance for a good ol’ reset because believe me, my raging introvert needs it.

Emily

I love taking advantage of the hours before and after my 9-5. You’ll often find me working on a new print illustration for my personal brand ‘The Emily Edit,’ workshopping a content creation idea, working on a freelance illustration project, or leisurely drawing away. I’m passionate about staying creative outside of my day job and believe in having space and time to play and experiment without pressure. This can be key to sparking inspiration and new ideas that I can bring to my 9-5 client work too!

Knock off drinks are more than a catch up – they’re a therapy session. Whether it’s my corporate mates or shift hustlers, grabbing a vino after work is our time to decompress from the day and end on a high note, ready to conquer the next. Weekend hangs are meant for shenanigans only; our weekday get-togethers are for rants and the stories that can’t wait. Plus, it’s way easier to snag a reservation on a weekday.

CORPORATE PSYCHOLOGY

with Dr John Barletta

Wellbeing and productivity

Workplaces focus on productivity. Owners and managers keep costs to a minimum as a way of increasing the financial bottom line. This means they fail to focus on employee engagement, satisfaction, and wellness. There are, however, some quality employers and smart leaders who know that when they provide excellent leadership, a psychologically sound environment, targeted worker benefits, and staff wellness programs, that productivity, engagement, creativity, wellbeing, and capability increase significantly.

If employers and leaders provide well-considered structures in the workplace and systems in psychologically-minded ways, staff are happier and more industrious. All it takes is a desire to build a new story, some thought, resources, and commitment.

Likewise, as an employee, you have a responsibility to arrive fit and ready for work, and to engage in tasks to meet expectations. This means having a flourishing life that enables you to be a healthy and productive worker. When employers and employees take shared responsibility for engagement and wellness, great things happen.

VARICOSE VEINS with Dr Nicholas Kemp

Are varicose veins hereditary?

A common question I often get asked is ‘does varicose veins run in families?’ Unfortunately, the answer is yes. If both parents are affected, you carry a 90 per cent chance of developing them yourself.

Technically speaking, it’s not varicose veins that are hereditary but venous disease, which affects the strength of vein walls and damages the valves (which carry blood back to the heart) – this can lead to the development of varicose veins.

Not all members of the family may have visible torturous veins on their skin but if their leg veins are failing then they might develop symptoms such as:

• Aching, swollen, ‘hot’ or itchy legs

• Nocturnal cramps and restless leg syndrome

• Eczema, brown staining or hardening of the skin especially around the ankles, which if left untreated can lead to ulceration

If you suffer from any of these problems and have a family history of varicose veins, then it may be worth having an assessment with a phlebologist.

Rest, recharge, rejuvenate

Self care – it’s critical. I’ve always scheduled ‘me time’ throughout my busy year to reflect and rejuvenate. Let’s face it, we’re all master jugglers balancing careers, family, and everything in between, which can leave us feeling overwhelmed and burnt out.

Me-time, free of interruptions and distractions is what we all need from time to time. This year, why not schedule more time to recharge and ‘flop and drop’ in style, and what better way to do this than hopping on a trip of a lifetime?

Craving a holiday on a remote island, or better yet an open-ocean sailing trip? Or, would you rather wind down at a luxurious resort or wellness retreat? When you’re ready to slow down and escape the whirlwind, the hardest decision will be deciding where to retreat. The good news is, that’s where I can help and I will do my best to tailor the perfect escape for you.

Prioritise, prioritise, and prioritise

If you’re thinking about buying your first home, or just in the market for a new property, my number one tip would be to prioritise. That means making the time to prioritise your preferences –determine what is most important to you in a home and what you can compromise on. I’d then recommend making an actual list and sharing it with your agent.

I’d also advise getting pre-approval prior to house hunting. Knowing how much you can borrow will improve your chances of nabbing your dream home. It will also give you and your agent a more accurate idea of what you can afford, which will make the house hunting process a lot smoother and more enjoyable.

And lastly, don’t be afraid to shop around on your mortgage loan. The right deal could save you thousands in the long run. On that note, happy house hunting!

STYLING TIPS with Mark Ferguson

Look good, feel good

Confidence is an essential element of good mental health, and fashion can be one of the best ways to boost your mood.

We recently had the pleasure of working with Lewis, a kind young man with autism, where we created a bespoke dinner jacket for his school formal. The jacket didn’t just boost his confidence but allowed for his true positive nature and personality to shine through.

Another example of power dressing is with former American-Australian pro basketballer Derek Rucker, who is showered in compliments whenever he steps out in his bespoke Wil Valor jacket. I believe the validation from others allows people to feel recognised for who they are and where they are in life.

Another great mood-booster is colour. We all have those days when we don’t feel our best, but a pop of colour can be an accessible source of strength. For example, orange can bring excitement and creativity, while blue can help with calmness.

It’s important not to underestimate the effect of colour and fashion on our mental wellbeing. So, there you have it, the rumours are true; if you look good, you feel good…

FINE JEWELS with Troy McKenzie
The ocean’s jewel

March has arrived, which means autumn is finally here! For those Pisces babies, we’re taking a look at your stunning birthstone: aquamarine. Reminiscent of the sea and believed to be a powerfully soothing influence on relationships, this blue or blue-green fine gem is an excellent stone to add to your jewellery pieces. It can be used in a variety of jewellery, such as rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.

There are, maybe not so surprisingly, a lot of fun facts and myths surrounding this special gemstone, so I thought I’d do a deep dive into Google and see what comes up…

• The name aquamarine is derived from two Latin words: aqua, meaning ‘water’, and marina, meaning ‘of the sea’

• Known as the stone of ‘courage and protection’, aquamarine was once believed to give its wearers protection during battle

• Others believed it had the ability to calm waves and keep sailors safe at sea

• And the largest gem-quality aquamarine ever mined was almost 50cm long and over 100kg – now, that’s impressive! With so much history behind it, this dazzling blue gemstone truly is one of the most unique gems around…

COFFEE MASTERCLASS

Beyond the morning buzz

Coffee delivers in more ways than one. In fact, you see study after study indicating you could be getting more from your favourite morning beverage than you thought. Research has shown coffee is very rich in antioxidants that may help ward off certain diseases, as well as improve your overall wellbeing –that’s right, coffee can give you more than just a morning buzz!

While caffeine makes up some of it, coffee is an intricate mixture of more than a thousand chemicals. The cup of coffee you order from your local cafe is likely different from the coffee you brew at home. What defines a cup is the type of coffee beans used, and how it’s roasted, ground, or brewed. Human response to coffee or caffeine can also vary substantially across individuals. Low-to-moderate doses of caffeine (50–300mg) may cause increased alertness, energy, and ability to concentrate, while higher doses may have negative effects such as anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, and increased heart rate. Still, the cumulative research on coffee points to good health.

Let them play!

The importance of wellbeing starts at a young age. These little people will be the voices of the future, so we need to invest in their health, both physical and mental, as much as our own.

As phone usage increases, the opportunity for learning in physical environments is a chance to take little people away from technology and invite them to learn cognitive skills through play. Play spaces are now not just a place for parents to find a minute of rest but a chance for children to play, learn, read, and create.

Stimulating and creative, play spaces have the ability to immerse a child in a safe environment, develop motor skills, improve hand eye coordination and even enhance their sense of connection with peers. Play spaces and activations designed by The Prop House and VM+ inspire both adults and children alike…from little things, big things grow.

Yes, you read it here first, tinned fish is officially cool!

f you’ve cowered in the corner of your work lunchroom while covertly opening a can of tuna, we get you. But it’s time to make that tuna salad with pride because the tides have turned – that’s right, tinned fish has made a comeback.

Canned seafood delicacies like sardines, anchovies, and oysters are a staple in countries such as Spain and Portugal, where they are known as ‘conservas’. With entire restaurants and stores dedicated to these gourmet snacks, you can expect quality seafood preserved with a range of accompaniments, from natural brine that mimics the sea, to extensive spice blends and even squid that is preserved in its own ink. While these delicacies are beloved by chefs and home-cooks alike across the seas, on home shores it’s been a rather different kettle of fish… until now.

Recently, we have seen preserved seafood swimming upstream. What began as a niche fan club has become the latest digital food craze. Paired with crusty bread and your favourite vino, aesthetic tinned fish boards are the new staple for date night charcuterie. In the River City you can head to South City Wine, who boasts an entire

menu of ‘tinnies’, served with baguette and whipped butter.

Canned fish brands have jumped aboard too, and rising sales has seen a surge of beautifully designed products. These vintage-inspired, gourmet tins are in a league of their own, transporting us to long lunches in the Mediterranean.

The best bit? This trend has the potential to be both stylish and sustainable. Brands such as Fishwife and Fish4Ever are at the forefront of delivering sustainably sourced tinned seafood. Hunt around your favourite artisanal or health food store and you will likely find ethically caught products straight from the golden shores of the Spanish coastline. These pantry staples also boast incredible health benefits, being rich in proteins, omega-3, and fatty acids. Add to that, the convenience and affordability of tinned goods, and we’re o-fish-ally obsessed.

UN FIL TER ED

Healthy habits often start from a young age, but at what point should the education system come into play? From running laps around the oval to enforcing team sports in high school, it’s often a tricky line to balance between encouraging healthy practices and allowing freedom of choice. This month we pondered and probed, asking our very own, should physical education be mandatory in schools?

Here at Style HQ, we like to keep things real. Whether it’s REAL-WORLD POLITICS that’s sparked an in-office debate or SOCIAL NORMS we’re questioning, consider this series OFF THE RECORD, to be (at times) taken with a grain of salt, and of course, completely UNFILTERED.

Lisa //

First and foremost, I want to put a disclaimer that I am 100 per cent not what you would call a ‘sporty’ person, and as a kid I did really loath having to do PE. However, now as a mum of three boys and with my oldest starting school this year, I’ve somewhat changed my tune. It’s been proven that regular exercise helps children develop physical literacy, motor skills, coordination, and the management of stress. It also encourages fitness and boosts focus and concentration which attributes to overall academic performance. I’m also a huge believer that participating in team sports teaches key life skills such as cooperation, respect, and teamwork. As a parent navigating my way through a world filled with screentime and technology (I mean my 6-yearold literally wants to be a Youtube star!), we need all the help we can to create balance for our children. To be honest, I’d rather my children be forced to be active than learn algebra.

Rhonda // Sales Admin

I don’t think physical education should be mandatory… nothing should be mandatory; however, I will say it certainly should be strongly encouraged. In the techno age we’re living in, with kids glued to screens, some fresh air and exercise can only be a plus. However, whatever the type of exercise, it has to be enjoyable. Not all kids are the same, so each child should be encouraged to participate in whatever they feel comfortable doing and most importantly, enjoy. Whether that’s single participation, like athletics or running, or a team sport, there’s no point forcing physical education on someone, especially a child. I think we should be focusing our energy on ensuring children are enjoying themselves, encour aging each other to strive for greatness, and teaching kids inclusiveness. If a child is not the sporty type, there’s ways to encourage the outdoors and a bit of free movement without it being a mandatory requirement.

Max // Digital Campaign Manager

When push comes to shove, I believe physical education is just as important as mental health education, especially when it comes to helping children develop into happy, healthy adults. While school wasn’t necessarily my ‘thing’, PE was something I really enjoyed – whether that was because I enjoyed sport or just because it allowed me to escape the classroom environment. Studies have also shown that even short bursts of exercise prior to studying can improve concentration and retention of information. So, not only will teaching children these skills help them for the rest of their lives, but more immediately, they will have increased productivity throughout the rest of their studies.

The local passion project turned blossoming flower business, say hello to Farmgate Flowers Direct.

Avid Jan Powers Farmers Markets goers and frequent Market Organic Store shoppers will be familiar with the name Farmgate Flowers – a local flower business meeting our weekly flower fix.

Having grown up on a flower farm on the northwest coast of Tasmania, owner Bec Thomas was always destined to lead a career in the field (quite literally).

“We had freshly picked farm flowers in our family home every day. It was not luxurious, indulgent, or extravagant. It was simply an everyday thing that everyone in the district just did,” Bec says. “I decided I wanted to give people the opportunity to experience

what I had, and that was something quite special.” Eventually, Bec moved to Brisbane and launched Farmgate Flowers as a passion project in 2019 –now it has become her 9-5.

The majority of blooms are grown in the aptly named Tasmanian valley, Flowerdale. It’s there where every stem is handpicked to live up to the high quality, sustainable, and ethical standards that Farmgate Flowers are renowned for.

Farmgate has also just launched a Farmgate Flower Subscription Box to allow people to have fresh blooms in their homes all year round. After all, the only thing better than a fresh floral bouquet on your coffee table is a never-ending supply of them!

Designer in spotlight

Lo and behold: the foundation of Great Dane Furniture.

Great Dane Furniture has built quite the reputation for quality, service, and craftsmanship in the world of furniture design – just ask anyone who has wandered through the Prospect Street showroom. But behind the store façade comes a heart-warming story highlighting founder Anton Assaad’s connection with late designer Arne Vodder and just how the team shaped Great Dane into the 20-year business it is today.

Anton first discovered Arne’s furniture before launching Great Dane, yet it was some years later that Anton discovered Arne was alive, prompting him to send his very first letter. “It would mark the beginning of an important partnership for Great Dane, and more personally, the beginning of an important friendship,” Anton says.

The pair exchanged letters for months on end until finally meeting in a Copenhagen hotel lobby. “To my

delight, his personality matched his timeless designs perfectly,” he says.

Naturally, their conversations pivoted into putting Arne’s designs into production thanks to Great Dane’s resources and talented team of experts.

And although Arne passed away in 2009, Great Dane continue to bring Vodder pieces back to life. “I still feel a great sense of pride knowing that it was only with help of Great Dane that Vodder pieces are once more available,” Anton says.

If you’d love to come and immerse yourself in Vodder’s work, a stroll through our Brisbane showroom will not disappoint – you need to touch and experience the beautiful dovetailing to fully appreciate the collection.

Meet the Brisbane-born loveable larrikins with a knack for creating coastal rock ‘n roll hits.

Coming off the back of headlining Green Beacon’s 10 Years of Beers Birthday Bash at the Tivoli, we sat down with lead vocalist and guitarist Jackson ‘Jacko’ Van Issum of Beddy Rays to learn a little more about the Brisbane-based rockers and what’s in store for the band’s bright future.

We know your band name is a play on the Redland Bay nickname, ‘Reddy Bay’, so what was it like growing up there? Growing up there was good fun. We did all the things kids usually get up to like riding skateboards over to each other’s houses and playing footy together. We’ve all been best friends since we were six, so it’s pretty special.

How would you describe your style of music? It’s hard to describe. We call it rock music at the end of the day, but people automatically think of hard rock like ACDC. It has a bit of a surfie sound to it, so we’d describe it as more of a coastal–rock style.

What was going through your heads when smash hit, Sobercoaster, first started taking off in 2020?

When it first started taking off, we were right in the middle of the lockdowns so it was a bittersweet feeling. We thought it was so amazing when things started taking off, but at the same time, it was frustrating that we couldn’t tour or perform. Luckily, when everything started opening back up people were still loving it.

What band is your biggest inspiration?

Green Day was the band that actually got us into playing music. But another huge inspiration would have to be Violent Soho because they’re four best mates just like us. If they can do it, then why can’t we?

What’s been your favourite live performance to date, and why?

Falls Festival at Byron Bay. That was pretty awesome because we’ve been going to that festival for the last seven or eight years. It was a

real full-circle moment for us to go there and play for a massive crowd. Our friends were always saying, ‘it’ll be you guys up there one day!’

What’s in store for the band in the future, do you have any big goals you’re working towards? We’re trying to branch out overseas at the moment. We’re actually heading to Europe and the UK in a couple of weeks with Dune Rats but the goal is to be able to go and play our own shows over there one day.

What do you love most about Brisbane? I just love that everyone’s so friendly, the music community in Brisbane is very inviting and no one has a chip on their shoulder. It’s bloody awesome.

Pop, stay, & play

Art, luxury, and plenty of cocktails, say hello to the ultimate weekend escape.

They say that a journo’s first famil is one that she’ll never forget. Memorable for all the right reasons, my Style bucket list had another box ticked off this weekend as I embarked on my very first stay-cay to celebrate Sheraton Grand Gold Coast and HOTA Gallery’s exclusive ‘Legends of Pop - Stay & Play’ package.

A world exclusive experience, it was a blissful weekend to say the very least, including a trip to HOTA Gallery’s ‘Pop Masters’ exhibition, ‘Legends of Pop’ inspired high tea at Sheraton Gold Coast, a serene trip down the waterways on the HOPO ferry, and an abundance of exquisite food and cocktails that almost had me rolling my way home on the M1. Paradise quite literally in paradise (Surfers Paradise that is), Sheraton Grand Gold Coast was the perfect luxury stay-cay. Located right on the waterfront, there were captivating ocean views, a never-ending poolside, and interiors that had me feeling like I’d walked onto the set

of White Lotus season 3.

While it’s safe to say I enjoyed every moment of the weekend, highlights included visiting Fine Print Co’s new art bar (a cocktail haven!), having the lovely Bradley Vincent, Head of Curatorial and Programs at HOTA, take us on a private tour of the exhibition, and our lunch that followed at Palette. Head Chef Dayan Hartill-Law has truly created a menu that feels like you’re eating art (in the best way possible). I have simply not stopped thinking about their ‘Soup Can’ dessert since leaving.

A weekend I could quite possibly spend pages gushing about, if you’re keen on embracing the world of artists soon, be sure to book in from 1 March – 31 May. And in the words of Warhol, don’t forget, “art is anything you can get away with”.

The first thing you did this morning

Walked to the coffee shop, it was hot and muggy, but worth the caffeine hit!

Drink of choice

I’m loving spicy margaritas right now! But not too spicy. And if we’re talking nonalcoholic, then it has to be an oat cappuccino.

Song on high rotation

Elton John – Tiny Dancer.

Signature scent

I love going into Libertine on James Street; it’s such a special experience choosing your own perfume. ‘Upper Ten for Her’ by Lubin is my most recent go-to.

Next bucket list holiday

I’m always dreaming of where to go next; I would love to head to the Bahamas for a shoot and to relax as well, of course!

On Sunday, you’ll find me

At the moment I spend Sundays working on my kitchen renovation – tile hunting, sink searching and all things renovation!

Can’t

put down read

Right now, I’m reading How to Be Illuminous by Harriet Reuter Hapgood; it’s a lovely story about three daughters, whose mother is an artist. It’s a book about creativity, loss, and life.

What song best depicts your life

This is a hard one, but the first song that comes to mind is Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell. It’s a melancholy song, but I’ve always felt connected to it.

Who or what is your biggest influence?

I feel my drive to keep being creative and exploring the underwater realm is a big influence for me. I’m also inspired by whom I surround myself with on a personal level and creatives, who’s work I follow.

Best career advice you’ve ever received

I guess this isn’t just career advice, but also life advice from one of the greats, Steve Waugh: “Not everything will turn out the way you want it to, however it’s how you handle yourself in such situations that you’ll be remembered by.”

Get money smart! Tips to improve your financial wellbeing

1 . Take stock of where you are today – write out your monthly income, your expenses, as well as a list of all your assets and liabilities

2 . Set financial goals – ask yourself what your goals are (these are going to be 100 per cent personal to you), and then divide your goals into short and long term

3 . Act – taking stock of where you are and where you want to be is great, but the most important step is actually acting and working towards your financial goals

SMART COOKIE

Who said budgeting had to be boring? We chat to Téa Angelos, founder and CEO of Smart Women Society, an online education platform empowering women with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to take control of their lives.

Téa Angelos has always had an entrepreneurial mindset – at 18 she started her own digital marketing business while undergoing university (she has a dual degree in law and commerce). She then started Smart Women Society (SWS) as a passion project in 2020 while she was working as a management consultant for a ‘Big 4’ company.

“I’ve always been really passionate about simplifying complex topics into engaging and easy-to-follow steps,” she says.

“[When I was tutoring at university], I would always be drawing simple graphics or flow charts, and all my students loved that. I wanted to bring this same approach to a larger scale to help simplify all the boring, complicated, and scary life topics that we were never really taught about. And it picked up quite quickly and I was like, ‘I think we’re onto something here’.”

Now, three years later, SWS is one of Australia’s fastest-growing online education platforms, where you can find everything from money makeover and side hustle game plans to self-care guides and even travel planners!

“We are helping a thriving global community of over 400,000 women get smarter with their money, careers, wellbeing, and love lives,” she says. “We give really practical and actionable tips and break down complex topics into simple and easy-to-understand content.”

So why is financial wellbeing so important? Well, according to Téa taking care of your financial wellbeing is just as crucial as looking after your physical health.

“It’s about being confident and in control with how you’re managing your finances, your ability to meet your financial obligations, being prepared for unexpected events, working towards both short and longterm financial goals, and having the freedom to make choices that allow you to enjoy your life.”

So, there you have it folks – saving and budgeting is cool!
