HOW LUCKY ARE WE TO LIVE in such an amazing part of the country … or the world for that matter? We have beaches at our front door, the hinterland fringing our suburbs, a thriving café and arts culture and a freedom that is the envy of our southern neighbours. To celebrate we have put together a stunning issue with a ‘Live Local, Love Local’ theme. Inside, you will find a range of experiences to enjoy in our own backyard, from skyhigh staycations in the penthouse suite at Emporium Hotel South Bank to a Vine & Shine tour of the Granite Belt; from camping trips on Fraser Island to the upcoming Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. We also preview a joyful new book by Brisbane illustrator Kerrie Hess, taste test some local Wedded to the Weather wines and attend the opening of Gucci’s new store in QueensPlaza. Even our feature interviewee, Bee Gee Robin Gibb, shares fond memories of his time living in Australia. Still on the hyper-local theme, I recently had the pleasure of sitting down for a chat with Queensland Opposition Leader David Crisafulli at his Hope Island office.
Here is a man who is not just passionate about politics, he is also a first-generation Australian with a vision to return the state to number one in the country. You will find the full story on page 28. Of course, we have our usual mix of informative editorial as well, including the launch of the newest OMEGA Moonwatch+*9 and a look at what is happening in the world of electric vehicles and prestige cars. With the Gold Coast in the midst of a real estate boom, the ever-expanding Property Portfolio showcases stunning homes from Tugun to Hope Island, while the Luxury Living section has an elegant selection of furniture and homewares to help style your indoor/ outdoor spaces. Finally, as our gorgeous cover was shot at Palazzo Versace, we are giving someone the chance to enjoy a two-night stay at this luxury hotel so be sure to get your entry in. Good luck.

KEEPING THE
MUSIC ALIVE The second most successful songwriter in history (behind Sir Paul McCartney), Barry Gibb has a new album and a renewed appreciation for the Bee Gees music.
WORDS JANE MULKERRINS / THE TIMES / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE A FULL 40 YEARS after the film Saturday Night Fever, whose soundtrack sent the Bee Gees stratospheric and cemented their place in the annals of pop, Glastonbury 2017 was, says Barry Gibb, ‘the greatest night of my life, no question’. Occupying Sunday’s ‘Legends’ slot on the Pyramid Stage, the then 70-yearold musician treated the audience to an anthemic roll call of Bee Gees classics – Tragedy, Stayin’ Alive and Night Fever. When the crowd, in unison, crooned along to the ballad Words, its creator, centre stage, fell silent in awe. “I just didn’t know people really cared that much,” he says today, still apparently baffled by the adulation. “And after we did To Love Somebody, and the applause never stopped, that was the greatest moment I’ve ever known on stage.”

Bittersweet doesn’t really begin to cover it though, for Gibb, now 74, is the last Bee Gee standing, the sole survivor of the flamboyantly apparelled trio. Maurice died in 2003, af ter complications in surgery led to a heart attack, and his twin brother, Robin, in 2012, after a long fight with cancer. The youngest Gibb brother, Andy, who performed mostly as a soloist, died in 1988, five days after his 30th birthday, following years of cocaine addiction. “I’m the eldest, so it probably should have been me first,” reflects Barry. “I guess it’s a form of guilt. Survivor’s guilt.” For a time, after losing his brothers, Gibb had no compulsion to perform the hits they’d created together. “Robin wanted us to be the Bee Gees after Mo passed and I couldn’t handle that,” he says.
“I said, ‘We can be Barry and Robin, we can be Robin and Barry, but we can’t be the Bee Gees without Mo’. “And then, after Robin himself died, I didn’t want to do anything for a while. I didn’t have the heart. I just didn’t want to carry on on my own. One day, he says, he was lying on the sofa when his wife Linda ordered him out of his funk. She said, ‘Why don’t you get off your arse? You know what you can do. Go and do it. Stop floundering and turning yourself off to everything’.” Taking her advice, he went back into the studio and wrote a solo album – In the Now – which was released in 2016. His latest album, Greenfields, is a collection of Bee Gees numbers performed by Gibb and a gaggle of major country stars. >>

“I love country, I love bluegrass, and there’s always been an element of that in our songs,” he says. The disco beats may have distracted from it in the 70s, but many Bee Gees lyrics are perfect country fodder, filled with pain and melancholy. Recorded in Nashville, Greenfields includes duets with Keith Urban, Alison Krauss, Brandi Carlile and the queen herself, Dolly Parton, with melodies and harmonies rearranged for the guests. How does he find reaching for that famous falsetto these days? “Oh, that’s not a problem,” he assures me. “I don’t do it much at home. At the moment, I don’t do it much anywhere else either. But it’s still there. It’s resting,” he laughs. “If I ever get on stage again, I’ll blow it out.” And for anyone who can’t wait that long and wants that falsetto in all its arresting glory right now, there’s also a new documentary. The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart is aptly titled – a two-hour, two-hanky watch. I cried buckets. “I did too,” smiles Gibb. “Though I only watched the first cut, made my comments, then left it to the people who know how to do it.” He won’t be watching the finished version, partly because, ‘I can’t watch my brothers, who are no longer here. I just can’t. It’s impossible for me.’. “Also, if there’s a negative in there it’ll last me for days. I’m quite fragile.” Critical recognition never really came with the Bee Gees’ commercial success; 19 UK Top

Ten singles (and 5 No. 1s) never translated into them becoming cool. Did that bother him then, I ask, and does it bother him now? “As a young mawn, I would get easily offended,” he says. “But as the years go by, you toughen up, and there’s nothing makes you stronger than failing.
“We didn’t have to learn about harmonies; it just happened organically.” – Barry Gibb
“There were periods of our life where we weren’t acceptable, where we couldn’t get played on the radio. “So every time that occurred, we didn’t take it personally – we just went back to work. “You have a hit, you’re over the moon. If you have a flop, well, you’re disappointed, but you get tougher.” He also recognises now that their music has something potentially more precious: longevity. “My daughter has been in her car, turned Stayin’ Alive up on the radio, put the windows down and people have danced in the street.
“For some strange reason, it’s still part of the culture so I have to end up being proud of it,” he says. “I can’t apologise for six [US] No. 1 records in a row.” That’s a record shared only with Paul McCartney and John Lennon. The Gibb brothers, and their elder sister, Lesley, were born on the Isle of Man, then grew up in Manchester. Their father, Hugh, was a drummer who never quite hit the big time, and Barry remembers standing on a Manchester street, at eight, telling his brothers, aged five, ‘I want to be a pop star’. “Robin and Maurice said, ‘Oh, can we do that too?’ And I said, ‘OK, let’s be pop stars together’.” (His ambition never waned. He also recalls, aged 14, telling his first girlfriend not to dump him. “I said, ‘Well, you’re going to be sorry, because I’m going to be really famous,’ he laughs.) At nine, he got a guitar for Christmas, and the twins, toy guitars. “We didn’t have to learn about harmonies; it just happened organically,” he says. They started performing, as the Rattlesnakes, on the stage at their local cinema in Chorlton. Off stage, however, they were getting into trouble with the law, ‘trespassing all the time’. According to Gibb, the police advised his parents to consider emigrating to keep the boys out of trouble so the family decamped to Australia, where the trio spent seven years playing hotels and provincial RSL clubs. They were, says Gibb, ‘my happiest years as a kid’. >>

FEATURE “I never really wanted to leave, but we couldn’t have become international as a group if we stayed in Australia and we were not going to be deterred.” Back in Britain, by then the epicentre of the 60s music scene, the Beatles manager, Brian Epstein, turned them down, but his colleague Robert Stigwood signed them. Their second single with him, To Love Somebody – since covered by Nina Simone, Janis Joplin, Rod Stewart and Michael Bolton, among others – was their breakthrough hit. Soon, the Bee Gees were seeing the fruits of their focus and their labour; Barry bought a Rolls-Royce, a Bentley and a Lamborghini, and there was booze and drugs and girls galore. He was still only 21, Robin and Maurice just 18. “There were always things available to you – it was up to you to say no and keep clean,” he says. “You can’t write great songs if you’re not clean. That doesn’t work. People think it does, but it really doesn’t.” He did party though? “I can’t deny that,” he chuckles. However, unlike Maurice and Robin, who struggled with drinking and amphetamines respectively, and Andy, whose addiction killed him, Barry managed to pull himself back. “If I didn’t have Linda, I would have gone the same way,” he admits. “We were all subject to the same demons but Linda just wouldn’t allow that. “If I brought anything into the house, it went down the toilet.” With their new-found fame came new-found conflict, for which Barry places much of the blame with the music industry. “We had a lot of professional people jump in the middle of our family, take sides and create conflict. “People whispering that you didn’t need anyone else, that you didn’t need your brothers.” There were also three healthy egos at play. “Every one of us wanted to be a solo star,” he says. “My guess is that’s part of every group. But if you are brothers, you’re going to have problems, because every brother wants to be up front.” After almost two years of not speaking and briefly pursuing solo careers (to mixed responses), the band reunited in 1970 and, a year later, scored their first US No. 1 with How Can You Mend a Broken Heart. By 1973, however, they were in a rut. Radio stations would no longer play their sincere, sentimental ballads.

– Issue 83
“We thought maybe we’d done our time. Everyone gets about five years, if you’re lucky, and some only have one hit,” Gibb reflects. “But we weren’t ready to sit down. We thought, ‘No, we’re going to keep going’.” However, to keep going, they needed a new sound. Stigwood stepped in and suggested a change of scene, a beachside villa in Miami where Eric Clapton had recently recorded his hit album 461 Ocean Boulevard. There, they wrote the infectious, utterly unballady Jive Talkin’. Strategically delivered in 1975 to radio stations in a plain white cover, with no band name on it, the single went to No. 1 in the US, No. 5 in the UK, and, after almost 5 years in the wilderness, the Bee Gees were back. Then, a couple of years later, Stigwood asked them to write a few sample songs for a new film starring John Travolta.
“We hadn’t even seen a script”, says Gibb. They recorded Night Fever, If I Can’t Have You, More Than a Woman, How Deep Is Your Love and Stayin’ Alive, in little more than a weekend. The Saturday Night Fever soundtrack double album would spend 18 weeks at No. 1 in the UK and become the biggest-selling soundtrack in history, since eclipsed only by The Bodyguard. “It catapulted us to another level, immediately.” However, Robin admits he didn’t trust the enormous success. “Never did, never will,” he claims. Their 1979 album, Spirits Having Flown, was another huge hit; its first three tracks – Tragedy, Too Much Heaven and Love You Inside Out – all reached No. 1 in the US, giving the band six consecutive No. 1s in little more than a year.
But, while the band was jetting around on private planes and playing to packed stadiums, a backlash was gathering pace. Their ubiquity was now working against them; and disco as a genre was suffering a very public death, with records physically blown up at a ‘disco demolition’ event in Chicago. By that point, why not call it a day, retire? But that, clearly, is not the Bee Gee way. Barbra Streisand stepped in, asked Gibb to write and produce her album Guilty, featuring the single Woman in Love. They won a Grammy for the title track. Soon, the Bee Gees were writing charttoppers for everyone else: Chain Reaction for Diana Ross; Heartbreaker for Dionne Warwick; Islands in the Stream for Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. Gibb is now officially the second most successful songwriter in history after Sir Paul McCartney. What a wonderfully subversive ‘up yours’ to the industry that shunned them, I say. “Well, I can’t say I would have thought of it that way,” says Gibb, equably. “But I convinced Robin and Maurice that we should write for other people, to show everybody that we’re songwriters before anything else. You don’t have to live in one zone.” Despite their success, Gibb has said of all three late brothers that ‘my only regret is that we weren’t great pals at the end’. “Maurice was gone in two days, and we weren’t getting on very well. “Robin and I functioned musically, but we never functioned in any other way. We were brothers, but we weren’t really friends. “You never find peace really with that,” he adds. Playing their music helps. “I always feel their presence, but more so on stage than any other time.” And these days, the stage features other family members too: his son, Steve, who plays guitar in his band, and Maurice’s daughter, Samantha, who sings and has toured with them. Pandemic depending, he’d like to perform Greenfields live, with the country stars who recorded it with him. “And I’d like to do an album of Bee Gees songs that’s really stripped down, purely acoustic. “There are different ways of treating all that music, but it’s got to live and it’s got to breathe,” he says. “My only real mission now is to keep that music alive.”

A vision for low unemployment rates and hospitals and schools that put the patient and the student before everything else. A vision to return Queensland to number one. And listening to the State’s Leader of the Opposition speak with such passion and such conviction, it is very easy to imagine those visions coming to fruition. As proud first generation Australian, David has witnessed first-hand how a strong work ethic and a desire to succeed can help you achieve whatever you set your mind to. “My grandfather came to Australia to cut cane in the heat of Queensland sun when he was about my age,” David explains. “He didn’t speak a word of English but he worked his backside off and by the time he passed away, he had bought a couple of farms and done really well for himself. “My dad left school when he was 12, but to his credit he took over the reins and now runs a very successful farming enterprise. “I’m very proud of both of them.” While farming was (and still is) very much a part of his heritage, David’s career has taken a very different path. “I was 18 when I first got a job as a cadet journalist at the local paper, 21 when I started in television and 24 when I was elected to council,” David says. “At one stage I was doing breakfast radio in the morning and television during the day, then at night I would run some lectures at the local university for young journalism students – which I enjoyed immensely – and on weekends I was a correspondent for The Australian and the Sunday Mail writing sport.” While this was perfect grounding for the long hours he is undertaking in his current role, it was also the catalyst for him entering politics in the first place.

“As a journalist I was increasingly becoming frustrated with my local council in Townsville which was very partisan and, in my opinion, very misguided in its views with the community,” David explains. “It was a 100 per cent Labor Party Council and the only council outside of Brisbane which has endorsed political candidates. “I was encouraged to run as a young conservative and I ran my first campaign with $3000 I’d saved up and two pairs of shoes. “I just doorknocked and doorknocked and doorknocked and I won a seat in what was a very Labor area.” He went on to attain the position of deputy mayor before making the shift to state politics. “I was getting frustrated by the way the local government was getting treated by the state so I made the decision to run for a state seat,” he says. “I was elected as part of the 2012 landslide, which was the first time we had won that seat in a general election for 100 years, and I was put straight into the Ministry as Local Government Minister. “During that time, I was able to effect change and help restore power to local government, rebuilding communities like Bundaberg, and it was an amazing experience.” However, in 2015, there was a big correction and while David won on primaries, preferences meant he lost the seat. Ever the diplomat, he admits it was a turning point in both his life and his career. “It was scary and very humbling but it was probably a lesson I needed in life,” he recalls. “Around that time, I was asked by someone to write a proposal to put to government which was very well received so I set up a Media/ Government Strategy business and within a few months I had an office on the Gold Coast employing a couple of staff and things were going really well.” Seeing the potential, David and his wife Tegan, who he had met in Ingham while they were both working at Coles (“Tegan worked in the bakery and I was in the deli,” he recalls.), made the move from Townsville to Hope Island. “Within a month of making the decision to relocate, we had sold our home and bought one here, traded in the ute and bought a sedan, swapped the big dog for a little dog, and enrolled the girls in school,” David says with a wry smile.
“From the moment we got here I’ve had an amazing affinity with the Gold Coast,” he says. “People say to me’ why do you think the Gold Coast is such an amazing city?’ and automatically they think you are going to say the beaches, or the hinterland or the themeparks. “They are all great, they are magnificent … and so are the restaurants and the café culture and we are starting to get a vibrant arts scene … but that’s not what I love about the Gold Coast. “To me, it is the city of aspirations. “The majority of the people on the Coast aren’t born and raised here, they have come from somewhere … and overwhelmingly they have come because they want more … they want more for their kids, they are prepared to make sacrifices to get ahead, and I love that. “As soon as I arrived, I was welcomed with open arms … and I wasn’t welcomed because I was David Crisafulli, the former politician, I was welcomed because it’s that sort of place. “It’s an amazing city, it’s a deep city and it’s a place where people aspire to be … and that suits my values.” With the family settled in their new home town, another shot at politics beckoned. David was elected the Member for Broadwater in 2017 and subsequently took over the reins as leader of the Queensland Liberal National Party in November 2020. Now over 100 days into the role, David says there is a lot to be done to rebuild the party, however, he is definitely up for the challenge. “I’m a different style of Opposition Leader,” he says. “I’m not a whinger and I’m not a stirrer, that’s just not my style. “I am a values-driven politician, therefore if something’s good, I say it’s good regardless of the politics, likewise, if I feel something is wrong, I won’t take a backward step. “That means there are days when people say I should go harder and days they say I should go softer. “That’s understandable but people will learn from me that if I say something, it’s not because a pollster has told me to say it, it’s not because a focus group has told me you need to talk more about this or that, it’s because I truly believe in my value set. “As a party we are working to rebuild, refresh and reenergise and it’s an exciting time for me, both personally and professionally.”
It’s an amazing city, it’s a deep city and it’s a place where people aspire to be … and that suits my values. – David Crisafulli

MOON LANDING
OMEGA’s legendary Speedmaster Moonwatch has taken one giant leap in its powerful new development.
34 covemagazine.com.au
– Issue 83
THIS YEAR, OMEGA’s Speedmaster Moonwatch collection will be updated with its next generation of models. With unique touches in design and updates, this iconic timepiece is now a Master Chronometer – the highest standard of precision, performance and magnetic resistance in the Swiss watch maker's history. For the exciting redesign, OMEGA has taken inspiration from the fourth generation Moonwatch style, famed as one of the watches worn by Apollo 11 astronauts who landed on the moon in 1969. These space-era tributes include the classic asymmetrical case, the step dial, the double bevel caseback, and the famous dot over 90 (DON) and a dot diagonal to 70 on the anodised aluminium bezel ring. Small but important details in the telling of the Speedmaster story. “When updating a sacred timepiece like the Speedmaster Moonwatch, every detail must be true to its original spirit,” said Raynald Aeschlimann, President and CEO of OMEGA.
“This chronograph is recognised the world over, so we’ve approached its design with the most sincere respect, while taking its movement to the next level.” While the classic design has become sacred, almost untouchable, the Speedmaster Moonwatch has always kept pace with technological change. In today’s modern world, phones, tablets, laptops and even hair-dryers can permanently throw a timepiece out of rhythm. While magnetism has become a serious threat to the performance of watches, the new Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861 ensures that the legendary Moonwatch is unaffected by even the most extreme magnetic fields reaching 15,000 gauss (the same level as a typical MRI scanner). Among the movement’s many benefits are the inclusions of non-ferrous materials, such as the Si14 balance spring, which keeps the heart of the watch protected at all times. >>

In accordance with the Calibre 3861’s frequency, the minute track is now split by three divisions, as opposed to the five divisions on previous models. OMEGA proving yet again their exacting standards and adherence to the strictest benchmarks of excellence. Thanks to another huge leap in technology, the upgrade of the Calibre 3861 means the Speedmaster Moonwatch is now Master Chronometer certified. To achieve the mark, every single Moonwatch will undergo eight rigorous tests before it leaves the OMEGA factory. Overseen by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS), these tests will give each wearer the confidence that the Speedmaster has been thoroughly proven in the strictest environment, and will serve them faithfully for their very own missions – whether it’s on the moon or closer to home. The legendary chronograph is an impressive representation of the brand’s adventurous pioneering spirit.
Having been part of all six moon landings, the Moonwatch is not only backed by science, but astronauts and NASA too. James Lovell, one of the first three people to fly and orbit the moon, has been a fan of the timepiece for many decades. “When Nasa asked us to bring our Speedmasters back, we all refused,” he said. While the Moonwatch’s famous features remain unchanged, OMEGA have been careful not to completely transform the watch but rather continue the legacy and open a new chapter for one of history’s most recognised chronographs. As James Ragan, NASA’s man behind the Moonwatch and aerospace engineer said, “it’s great to see how OMEGA is able to take a classic design and continue to evolve it.”
MOONWATCH TIMELINE 1957 – THE SPEEDMASTER IS BORN In 1957, OMEGA went on a mission to create a robust chronograph that would be waterproof, easy to read, easy to use and exceedingly precise. Little did they know, the result would change the history of the brand forever. 1963 – THE NASA REQUEST It was at the end of Project Mercury that NASA astronauts approached their Operations Director, Deke Slayton, and asked to be issued with a reliable watch for their manned missions into space. In response, Slayton issued a request for ‘high-quality chronographs’ in 1964 and of all the brands that received the letter, only four responded – including OMEGA, who sent a delivery of third generation Speedmaster chronographs. 1965 – THE NASA QUALIFICATION In NASA’s request, each watch company was asked to send ‘three wrist-worn chronographs’ and these were tested under the most intense examinations imaginable. Only the OMEGA Speedmaster survived these tests and, as a result, it was declared “Flight Qualified for all Manned Space Missions” on 1 March 1965. 1965 – FIRST AMERICAN SPACEWALK Leaving the safety of his Gemini capsule, Edward White became the first American
36 covemagazine.com.au
– Issue 83
to walk in space. Attached to his wrist by a special strap was an OMEGA Speedmaster, newly qualified by NASA. White’s spacewalk began while floating above the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii and ended over the Gulf of Mexico 23 minutes later. 1965 – THE MOONWATCH DESIGN It was the fourth generation update of the Speedmaster that provided subtle but important changes to the chronograph’s design. This is the style that is associated today as being the original ‘Moonwatch’. 1969 – THE FIRST MOON LANDING At the same moment that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped onto the lunar surface for the first time in human history, the OMEGA Speedmaster became the first watch worn on the moon. 1969 - 1972 – RETURNING TO THE MOON The Speedmaster Moonwatch has been worn by the crews of all six lunar landings in history. After that first Giant Leap with Apollo 11 in 1969, it again ventured beyond Earth alongside the astronauts of Apollo 12, 14, 15, 16 and 17. 1970 – RESCUING APOLLO 13 The Apollo 13 mission was crippled by an on-board explosion, which plunged the crew into an uncertain future. Needing to desperately conserve power, their electronic
equipment could not be used. Instead, their OMEGA Speed-masters were used to precisely time a series of engine burns that repositioned the craft and enabled its safe return to Earth. 1975 – APOLLO-SOYUZ Russian cosmonauts and American astronauts wore Speedmaster chronographs during a historic meeting in space that signalled the beginning of the end of the Cold War. With their spacecraft docking together, the Apollo and Soyuz commanders shook hands through an open hatch. From this moment on, the Speedmaster Moonwatch was adopted by most of the world’s major space agencies. 2020 – MASTER CHRONOMETER CERTIFIED It took four years of development to produce the next powerful calibre within the Moonwatch family, this time achieving Master Chronometer certification. Released in 2019, the Calibre 3861 has improved the power reserve, chronometric performance and magnetic resistance of the iconic movement, with many innovative features which enable the calibre to pass the eight Master Chronometer tests.

CABINET OF CURIOSITIES Gucci has a new home in Brisbane’s QueensPlaza.
FOUNDED IN FLORENCE IN 1921, Gucci is one of the world’s leading luxury brands, with a renowned reputation for creativity, innovation and Italian craftsmanship. Each Gucci boutique is a ‘cabinet of curiosities’, created to delight and inspire and their newly relocated store in Brisbane’s QueensPlaza is no exception. The boutique spans over 3,313 square feet and houses a wide selection of men’s and women’s ready-to-wear, handbags, shoes, accessories, watches, jewellery, eyewear and fragrances. Notable attendees including The Veronicas, Mimi Elashiry, Laura Jade Stone, Deena Lynch and Cub Sport were on hand for the recent opening.

In keeping with the eclecticism that characterises Gucci’s collections, the fashionforward label’s new home sees the combination of traditional and modern, industrial and romantic. Once customers have crossed the threshold, they are invited to feel welcome and relaxed in the discreet interior, where understated drama is created by the surprising and unexpected combination of surfaces and materials. The façade in Arabascato Orbico marble, the first of its kind in the South East Asia Pacific store network, welcomes visitors and sets the tone with its striking Rhombus pattern. Soft elements like velvet armchairs and vintage dark wood display furniture offset harder surfaces and industrial elements, such as rivets.
Contemporary luxury is suggested not only by the employment of beautiful and idiosyncratic materials, but also through a determinedly spare use of space. Contrasting merchandising elements represent different design codes, and these combine to create curiosity, inviting customers to feel like they are constantly discovering new aspects of the store. Hand-painted parquet provides an unexpected decorative effect to the floors, while being harmoniously integrated with the herringbone wood that runs through the rest of the store.
Juxtaposition of this sort, where opposites forge a new connection, is repeated throughout: technical, display units contrast with the softness of the rich fabrics that adorn the rooms; round tables offset rectangular ones; dark wood finishes sit next to dusty pink or dark grey matelassé velvets, used for upholstery and fitting rooms. Throughout the store one finds sumptuous velvet chairs, while vintage oriental rugs are layered over each other for a textured effect. The result is a space that entices, surprises and feels personal to Gucci.

FINDING JOY Joy in the Little Things is a beautiful new book from Brisbane illustrator Kerrie Hess. WORDS STACEY SHAPIRO “JOY. It’s a gorgeous word. Short but sweet, little but loud. It pops like champagne, and it sparkles with a sense of celebration and elation … Joy is being completely in the moment. It’s when happiness is so overpowering that it tunes everything else out. You know you’re exactly where you need to be," says Kerrie Hess. The renowned illustrator has an important message for us all: slow down, look around and smell the peonies. In her new book Joy in the Little Things, Kerrie combines her signature watercolour illustrations with romantic and meaningful text. The dreamy, feminine style whisks us away to chic Parisian cafes, beautiful hotels and into the world of strong, stylish fashionistas. Elegant pictures of macarons, teacups, jewellery and peonies offer insight into the small pleasures that Kerrie weaves magically into her life. This powerfully pretty book is brimming with gentle reminders to find joy every day, particularly for busy women. “A boyfriend is all well and lovely … but every girl most certainly needs a joyfriend,” Kerrie writes. “She’s the one who’s always there to give you a morale boost, to meet you for happy hour at the drop of a hat, to have you over and hold your hand when your world seems to be crumbling down around you.” With an impressive creative history which includes global campaigns for Tiffany & Co.,

Cartier, Ladurée, Louis Vuitton, Kate Spade and Lancôme, Kerrie’s works are adored worldwide with the likes of Emma Watson and Ariana Grande commissioning portraits from the talented artist. It’s the very success that she’s enjoyed which helped form the idea for the book. “I am constantly reminding myself to slow down and notice the moments that matter,” she says. “Throughout the process of creating the book I realised how much I value these small moments and daily rituals.” Whether it’s snuggling on the couch with her son or enjoying an evening bath and good book, Kerrie has discovered all the little things that make her happy. Her hope is that the book will help us do the same. “I think as women, we tend to put ourselves last on the list. “I hope this book will remind us that we are the gatekeepers of our own happiness and to soak up the perfect moments in life that we sometimes miss.” Available in April 2021, Joy in the Little Things is a sweet billet-doux that serves as a wonderful guide to truly embracing the simple pleasures in life that lead us to contentment, love and of course, joy.

LOCAL FOCUS Sanctuary Cove Optical offer personal, professional service in a relaxed village environment.
SANCTUARY COVE VILLAGE is home to one of the last remaining independent optometry practices on the Gold Coast. For more than six years Michael Jackson (a different one) and his team have provided exceptional eye health services and unique European frames. At Sanctuary Cove Optical, being independent means the focus remains on patient eye health and quality eyewear. “Sanctuary Cove is such a beautiful and unique community, and I am focussed on meeting and exceeding the eye health needs of local residents,” says Michael, who is the Optometrist and Practice owner.
“Across the Gold Coast optometry community, formerly independent Optical practices are being absorbed by large chain stores. “This often results in a higher emphasis on investor return and profit margins at the expense of patient care. “At the same time, these chains often seek to maximise profit by minimising frame costs and thereby quality.” With almost 20 years’ experience in Optometry, additional qualifications as an Ophthalmic Medicines Prescriber and close links to leading Gold Coast eye surgeons, Michael has his finger on the pulse when it comes to eye health and new innovations. In addition, his well-trained staff at Sanctuary Cove Opitical strive to offer personal, friendly, and professional service, going over and above to meet the needs of the local community.
Michael and his team select and import unique and luxury frames from across Europe. The Sanctuary Cove practice is one of the largest suppliers of the highly regarded Lindberg Brand from Denmark, as well as luxury brands like Chopard. The Practice also stocks a large range of prescriptible sunglass options for outdoor activities like fishing, golfing, boating, driving and even scuba diving. Michael also offers a range of contact lens options, including Ortho K, a style of lens that reshapes the cornea whilst you sleep. If you haven’t already visited Sanctuary Cove Optical drop in and say hello. Located next to the new Chempro chemist in the Marine Village, the Practice is another one of the great assets in the heart of the Sanctuary Cove community.

TWO PADDOCKS TO PLAT E
While Tasmania’s rugged beauty is one of the island state’s main attractions for tourists, there’s no denying the pull of its cuisine.
WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY MARJ OSBORNE TASMANIA, with its clean air, rich soil and abundant rainfall grows some of the best food in the world: fresh seafood, gourmet meat and fruit and vegetables packed with flavour. The island state is home to small sustainable farms that grow heirloom produce, farmgate markets selling delicacies made by passionate artisan producers, and local paddock-toplate experiences. Tourists visit Tasmania not only to try great restaurants, but also to experience immersive food experiences where they can learn more about food origins and diversity from farmers, producers and chefs. They want to experience the journey of food in a wider context rather than ticking restaurants off a culinary bucket list. On our recent trip to Tasmania, we visited two highly enjoyable – yet vastly different – paddock-to-plate dining experiences: Fat Pig Farm and The Agrarian Kitchen, both a short drive from Hobart.

LONG LUNCH AT FAT PIG FARM Matthew Evans, former chef, writer, star of The Gourmet Farmer and editor of The Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide, settled with his wife Sadie on a farm near Cygnet, about 50km south of Hobart, opening Fat Pig Kitchen in 2017. Every Friday, the couple hosts a long lunch at the farm, diners seated at a communal table adjoining the kitchen. It’s a set menu accompanied by specially matched beer, wine, cider and spirits from around Tasmania. Almost the entire feast is prepared from seasonal produce grown on the couple’s 70-acre farm, the menu changing weekly. There is no food fresher than this, no provenance unknown, with a farm tour adding the context of food history and conservation to the experience. We share almost a dozen small dishes including delicious broad bean falafel with homemade yoghurt, ham from the farm’s
heritage Wessex saddleback pigs (which we’ll see on our farm tour midway through the meal) served with house pickles and a radish salad, woodfired sourdough rye with homemade cultured butter, polenta from hand ground corn, farmer’s salad dressed with flowers picked that morning, Evans’s famous wild greens pie (a little like Greek Hortopita), and roast shredded fat pig. The food is rustic and earth-driven, comfort food that dates back through centuries of farmers, tied to the earth of its origin, not just ‘paddock to plate’ but hyperlocal in a way we have not seen before: ‘this paddock to this plate’. Totally unique, this is an experience you won’t get anywhere else.>>

LUNCH AT THE AGRARIAN KITCHEN Rodney Dunn and his wife Séverine Demanet run both the Agrarian Kitchen Cooking school and The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery in New Norfolk, half an hour’s drive north-west of Hobart. Opened in 2017, The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery is located on the outskirts of town in one of 23 buildings which form Willow Court, a former mental asylum with a 170-year-old history. It’s unsettling pondering the historical treatment of both intellectually disabled and mentally ill over the past two centuries, the eatery now a bright light where once there was misery and pain. There’s a spareness to the dining room due to its setting, reinforced by high pressed metal ceilings and blond Scandi-style furnishings, but it’s offset by plenty of warmth in the welcome as we are seated ready to embark on our meal. In view from the dining room, food is prepared in the adjoining kitchen, where the hand-crafted wood-fired oven, grill and smoker form its fiery heart. The anteroom shows us more of the chefs’ behind-the-scenes work; a pantry boasting shelves of preserved fruit and pickles sits beside fridges of cheeses, all made in house. Using seasonal ingredients from a community of local specialty growers, farmers and fishermen, the team has prepared us a degustation of dishes which come out in procession, two or three small plates at a time: house-baked sourdough with kefir butter, burrata with smoked paprika, clams with broad beans, Oaxacan green corn bread, one-day-old cheese … over a dozen dishes with two desserts to conclude. The food harbours delicate flavours and surprise ingredients, such as the punch of lemon verbena in the crème caramel. Simply but beautifully presented with charming service, mostly it’s the quality of the produce that speaks to us. Both The Agrarian Kitchen and Fat Pig Farm are celebrations of local, seasonal and heirloom produce. They tell us different stories about Tasmania yet with a common theme. The Agrarian Kitchen offers a polished yet very accessible produce-driven journey through local Tasmanian food. And while the Fat Pig Farm experience is far more earthy and rustic than The Agrarian Kitchen, it’s rich in knowledge, showing the difference that one farm, one single plot of land can make. Both are all about the journey.

WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY MARG OSBORNE
VINE AND SHINE The Granite Belt wine region forms an integral part of the Queensland Vine and Shine Trail.
WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY MARG OSBORNE A TRIP TO QUEENSLAND’S GRANITE BELT is one of our favourite car journeys. While it’s not possible to visit each one of the 50 or so wineries in a long weekend, following the Vine and Shine Trail we plot out three days of indulgence visiting vineyards and artisan food producers stretched across the region. To those who think of Queensland as a tropical destination, the Granite Belt is a surprise package. The largest of Queensland’s two recognised wine regions, its growing conditions are comparable to both the Clare Valley and northern Rhône. Named after the boulder-strewn landscape and the elongated shape of the region, the Granite Belt is also one of Australia’s highest wine-producing regions, ranging from over 650 to 1000 metres, its high-altitude cool climate and well-drained decomposed granite soils conducive to the production of excellent wine. The only area of the state to experience four true seasons, the region is a popular winter escape, a land where coastal dwellers can

encounter frost and snow, curling up in front of a fire with a glass of red. Grapes have a long history in the Granite Belt dating back a century to when Italian immigrants cleared the land with winches and dynamite, planting stone fruit, apples and berries on their farms, as well as the first grapevines. “My grandfather made wine from table grapes in the 1930s, not only for the family’s consumption, but also to send by barrel to Innisfail where his friends were cutting cane,” says Angelo Puglisi, veteran winemaker and owner of Ballandean Estate, the oldest and one of the most established wineries that we visit. Having read a lot and seen the German wine traditions in the Barossa, Puglisi planted his shiraz and cabernet vines in 1968 despite stiff criticism, these two varieties remaining staples of Ballandean Estate’s award-winning range. Although mainstream varieties make up 60 per cent of the region’s wine production, more than 50 emerging varieties are grown here, the foresight of adventurous pioneers, such as Puglisi, who thought outside the square.
The famous Strangebird Alternative Wine Trail features Granite Belt wine made from lesser-known varietals; wines such as Verdelho, Nebbiolo, Tempranillo, Barbera and Saperavi. Travelling the length of the Granite Belt, it’s possible to see some variation in the microclimates. It’s interesting, too, to note the difference in viticulture techniques and the variation in vintage times across the region. Just three hours by car from Brisbane and the Gold Coast, the northern part of the region is well known for its apples and stone fruit. It’s also home to great wineries, including 5-star Boireann Winery and Summit Estate and the Queensland College of Wine Tourism, which has its own vineyard and restaurant. At an altitude of 930m, Heritage Estate, rated a 5-star winery by James Halliday for the past five years, has taken wine tasting to the next level with their Nips & Nosh food and wine pairing by presenting a luxe 5-course lunch degustation from Friday to Sunday in their classically themed restaurant.
Dining at Queensland’s original parliamentary table, your meal will be accompanied by five wines, one of them being Heritage’s Rabbit Fence Red which references the rabbit-proof fence adjoining the vineyard, part of the fence constructed in the 1890s along Queensland’s southern and western borders for a length of 2700 kilometres. Situated in an apple orchard area, the multi award winning Robert Channon Wines holds the distinction of having their wine served to Queen Elizabeth II. Planted in a frost-free area at 950m, the vines are under cover of permanent bird nets which not only protect them from hail but also slow the ripening of the grapes, leading to better flavour development. High enough up on the western slopes to garnish winter mists, drizzle and snow, at the charming Ravens Croft cellar door you’ll be met by owner Mark Ravenscroft, whose hands have brought the wine from vine to glass. Boutique, with just three acres under vine, the master winemaker uses minimal intervention techniques to make award-winning preservative-free and vegan-friendly wine. Sit and relax on Mark’s shaded deck looking out across the vineyard and chat to him about wine and his fascinating winemaking journey. Further south in Glen Aplin, Ridgemill Estate is drier, cooler, prone to late spring frosts, and with different soils to some other parts of the Granite Belt. Their winemaker, Pete McGlashan, produces wine across a range of styles, from barrel-fermented Chardonnay to less common European ‘strangebird’ varietals such as Tempranillo. Quirkily named after dogs and family members, many of Ridgemill’s wines are vegan friendly. A number of studio cabins on the property makes this an excellent place to stay and enjoy time in the vineyards, with breakfast included. Even further south, Ballandean could be divided into two areas differentiated by varying altitude. The high-altitude wineries of Hidden Creek, Twisted Gum, Symphony Hill and Just Red along the Eukey Road ridge produce high quality cool climate wines. The pristine Symphony Hill, at close to 1000m, is one of the highest vineyards in the region. Their wines fly high as well, the 2016 Reserve Shiraz and 2017 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon both gaining five stars from Halliday, the 2016 Shiraz served on Qantas International business class flights. On the western side of the highway lie some of the Granite Belt’s oldest and most established wineries, including Golden Grove, Ballandean Estate and Tobin Wines. In winter, the Ballandean Valley is prone to frost, sometimes around 50 per year. It’s the home of many Italian varietals, planted by Italian pioneer families who settled the area up to a century ago, who have since branched out into many other varieties. Whatever your tastes or your budget, a visit to the Granite Belt should be on your to-do list. “Every bottle tells a story of people, place and passion,” Angelo Puglisi says. These tales provide context for the wine discoveries you bring home from your trip to enjoy in the weeks ahead. So, come join us on the road.

WINES AU NATUREL Brisbane’s Doug Woodward is taking a natural approach to wine making … and producing amazing wines in the process. WORDS TONY HARPER I’M UNSURE if it should be called advancement or regression; let’s just call it change. But it has happened so quickly and definitively – it has taken over the hearts and minds of so many wine drinkers – I think it is here to stay. I’m talking about the mushrooming quantity of lo-fi, primitively made wines that have become such a passion for younger wine drinkers, jaded professionals and folk merely wanting something

different in their wine glass: orange wines, field blends, the grubby and the clean, the un-reared, unfiltered, unrefined; the hippies of the wine world in all of their funky, often smelly glory. Thirty years ago it was home brewers challenging the might of beer brands Castlemaine and Carlton. Today it is guys and girls in their garage taking on Penfolds.
Enter Doug Woodward. A man who is definitely clean and sanitised, but who – in the north-west suburbs of Brisbane – makes wine on a micro-scale without a laboratory, a winery, a vineyard, a staff. Lo-fi for sure, but primitive only in terms of production. He produces perhaps the brightest, most energetic wines I’ve ever tasted; unpolished but incredibly exuberant. Just like himself. A father of three now grown-up boys, Doug is perhaps best known via his wife Jenny who, for the past 35 years, has been the weather presenter for the ABC News. Theirs is a marriage that catalysed the labels for Doug’s wines – Wedded to the Weather (get it?) and Cloud Project: odes to Jenny. But it’s not all about Jenny; Doug is a wonderful character, fond of bright shirts and chatter, prone to breaking into song at random, passionate, cheerful, and most of all an optimist; equal parts whacky and wonderful. A man who would carve his own path with or without his storm-riding wife. And he is a dab hand at winemaking. I guess it’s that optimism that allowed him to make the leap from working in a wine store, watching folk buy all sorts of odds and ends made by people of varying degrees of talent, to producing his own wines. It began as a hobby and has now become a business that stretches across the states and major cities of Australia. 2017 was the year for the first wine, a pet’ nat’ under the Wedded to the Weather label. It was made by Mike Hayes (currently Chief Winemaker at Sirromet, but then at Symphony Hill) with Doug an avid apprentice, from Gewurztraminer grapes sourced from the incredible Topper’s Mountain vineyard in northern New South Wales (and sadly ravaged by bushfires in 2019). These days Doug makes his own pet’ nat’s and still wines from an increasingly whacky array of varieties. He does them with a minimal amount of fuss: grapes, yeast, wine. Sadly, it may be a few years before Topper’s Mountain recovers enough to provide some more Gewurztraminer for Doug’s projects, or for their own.
I’ll pause for a moment to talk about pet’ nat’ (AKA pettilant naturel ... naturally sparkling). Basically, these are sparkling wines (sometimes prickly like mineral water, other times gushing like a fountain) made by stuffing the wines into the bottle a heartbeat before they have finished ferment. The fizz is from the carbon dioxide created by fermentation. No additions, no fiddling, as simple as can be. Sometimes they are wonderful, sometimes they are woeful, and always they are primal. They have no room or time for being polished and massaged. Their taste is as transparent as a wine can possibly be. Doug’s have always been beautifully precocious and bright, clean, bone dry, theatrical. These days he makes what is most likely Australia’s best Fernao Pires (a Portuguese white grape) simply because there is little or no competition. But even if there was competition, I have no doubt it would stand tall. It’s a terrific wine – exuberant, rich, almost a vinous extension of its maker (possibly about to burst into song) with oodles of texture (it’s almost slippery) and flavours that could be likened to feijoa, guava, even mango at a pinch. Definitely tropical.
He makes several pet’ nat’s, some white, some coloured, but all of them from lesser-known varieties; Vermentino, Prieto Picudo, Montepulciano, Touriga Nacional, Aglianico, Picudo ... And he makes still wines which are plush ... fruit forward, perhaps simple. But if you believe the wine lore that talks of variety and site being the most important characters of a wine, it’s hard to think of any others that can close the gap as succinctly as these. What Doug doesn’t do is allow oak into his regime: these are all very direct translations of the grapes from which they were made and the place in which those grapes were grown. Part of that decision is no doubt fuelled by the size of his operation – barrels are expensive, they take up space and require plenty of management – but the inclusion of oak would mar Doug’s wines ... add an element that sits between the grape and the glass. For people who drink conventional wines – Barossa Shiraz, Coonawarra Cabernet, Margaret River Chardonnay – it is quite a leap of faith to venture into the world of pet nat’s and skinsy whites. But if someone were to ask me the easiest, safest bridge to cross that chasm, I’d say Doug Woodward and his wines are the way to go. The trick lies in finding them.

FRIENDS IN HIGH PLACES
Our publisher Clare E. Urwin and friends enjoy a stay in the new penthouse at the Emporium South Bank.
IT WAS AN OFFER I couldn’t refuse. Go and stay in the new Parklands Suite at the Emporium South Bank, Brisbane. Take your husband Bryan, and some friends, and let us know what you think … Weren’t we lucky? Our home away from home for the night would be in one of the largest luxury hotel penthouses in Australia. Living on the Gold Coast, we all frequently visit Brisbane whether for business or pleasure. It’s a great road and continually being improved, so outside of the rush hour it’s an easy trip there and back. Therefore, the opportunity of actually staying in a hotel in our capital city doesn’t happen very often.

Or, perhaps it’s not even thought about, especially prior to COVID? After our visit, Bryan and I, and our mates, are going to make it happen far more often. The Emporium’s Parklands Suite is massive. Occupying a large chunk of the 21st floor, the penthouse is also sky high in style, elegance and sheer class. Inside, the 786 square metres are divided into four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a powder room, three separate dining areas, two lounge rooms and an executive study. Outside, there is a huge wraparound terrace, complete with outdoor dining facilities, sunbeds and, of course, your own 15 metre infinity pool with its Italian mosaic pearl pool tiles.
The views are absolutely stunning. North East facing, you overlook the Brisbane River, the CBD, South Bank, West End and far beyond. Between us, we had lots of recent and upcoming ‘occasions’ to celebrate during our stay together in the Parklands Suite. There was an 85th and 70th birthday, as well as a 50th and 48th wedding anniversary, but as we don’t normally‘need’ a reason to get together anyway, we all looked forward to experiencing our 24 hours of indulgent luxury. When Julie, our lovely ‘ambassador’ met us on arrival and ushered us into the Belle Époque for a luscious high tea, complete with never ending flutes of Mumm, we knew we were going to enjoy it.
Everyone. Everyday. Soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the Clubs peaceful surroundings and exceptional service.

The question was – and would be with a group of friends – who would have the Master suite? Kindly, (they are real mates) the Master suite was allocated to us and to be honest, Bryan and I didn’t really need much persuading. Actually, the Parklands Suite is so large and has so many different living areas; the idea of a group of friends of any age taking the space for a few nights is a good one. There is plenty of room for people to do ‘their own thing’ and separate for the odd hour. The latest wireless technology installed throughout the penthouse also ensures the different tastes of music, television, and streaming services are all seamlessly catered for. And there is the kitchen. Perhaps one of the group is a Gordon Ramsay or a Nigella Lawson follower and if that was the case, they would be in seventh heaven. It’s a state-of-the-art full-sized chef’s kitchen with a custom island, Sub Zero fridge, butler’s pantry and appliances by Gaggenau. Even the cool Nespresso machine had a wow factor. Cooking wasn’t any of our forte, so we ate in Emporium’s elegant Signature restaurant for dinner on the Wednesday evening. That was a wonderful experience too. Focusing on local boutique produce, the menu was relatively short while the wine list was suitably and interestingly long.

Our meals were perfectly balanced, delicious and memorable. The Emporium’s iconic Terrace is Brisbane’s premier open-air rooftop bar so any stay at the hotel must include a visit there. With a bespoke retractable ceiling and operable glass roof, you have unrivalled views across the city. The night-lights of Brisbane are especially spectacular … no wonder it’s so popular with locals and guests. We had to have a nightcap there of course, followed by a shortcut across to our Penthouse for sleep. Well, Bryan and I did anyway. The rest of our group played cards till the small hours helped by some cleansing complimentary refreshments from the Vintec fridges in the suite. Honestly, this generation of retirees are incorrigible. The next morning, we were all served a fabulous breakfast in the suite, however before that there was some vigorous laps of the pool taken by some and lazing in bed preferred by others. I personally enjoyed watching the traffic jam building on the Victoria bridge caused by all those poor people having to go to work on a beautiful sunny Brisbane Thursday … Because our time was limited, unfortunately we couldn’t take advantage of all the facilities and services that are freely available when you book into the Parkland Suite.
For instance, you have complimentary return airport limo transfers, your own private entry and lift, the use of the hotel’s Maserati town car, a baby grand piano, access to a personal chef for all food requirements and if you wish, a yoga teacher can be easily organised too. Then there are the eye-catching fresh flower arrangements to enjoy. Noticeable as soon as you walk into the suite, they are absolutely stunning. When you stay at the Emporium South Bank there is an atmosphere of relaxed sophistication teamed with efficient service. This is certainly exemplified by its staff. Nothing was too much trouble for any of them, in the restaurants and the bars, and from the concierges to the housekeepers. Of course, we were especially spoilt being in the Parklands Suite but it was obvious throughout the entire hotel. And it makes such a difference. Regrettably, we did have to check out after our 24 hours of luxurious indulgence, however, to extend our stay a little we went up to the Terrace for one last farewell cocktail. Why not? We didn’t want to leave. To put it simply, all of us had high expectations before our visit … our stay certainly exceeded them.

STAR ATTRACTION
A World Heritage-listed wilderness with resort-style comforts, Fraser Island is the perfect place to go wild – or go Hawaiian.
WORDS BROOKE LOWTHER AS A CHILD, my parents used to say to my sisters and I, if we looked up to the night sky, we may just see a shooting star (usually they would explain that we would only see one if we were very, very quiet). Ever since, I have frequently searched for them and maybe only twice have I ever seen a shooting star. This being said, I often wondered if it was because I have become so busy with life, being a single parent and working full time in both a career and as a mother that looking down at my mobile device was the reason I missed what was going on above me – and even right in front of me. I never took the time to look up. You may think, ‘what do stars have to do with Fraser Island?’. I am going to tell you … everything. Camping on a beach and waking up to the sound of waves was always my idea of a romantic dream. It may not have turned out exactly how I imagined when I went camping on Fraser, however, it was very close. I was aware that Fraser Island is one of the world's most unusual islands. Not only is it the largest sand island in the world – 123 kilometres long and 22 kilometres wide – but it's the only place on Earth where tall rainforests grow on sand dunes 200 metres high. It also has half the world's perched lakes – lakes formed when depressions in dunes fill permanently with rainwater.

Arriving at Fraser by 4WD was an experience within itself, lowering the air in the tyres, getting on the barge and grabbing the permit. I allowed my partner to do all of this manly organising and he took charge like a true alpha male. One thing I was scared of was the dingoes, however, I never saw one the entire trip. All roads on Fraser Island, which are made of soft sand, are 4WD only. A number of tours are available, or you can hire your own set of wheels on the island (I heard that you can also try hiring a 4WD in Hervey Bay). If you haven't driven on sand before, the friendly folk at Aussie Trax 4WD hire at Kingfisher Village will give you a quick lesson before you set out. Most people head straight to the vast sandy highway otherwise known as 75 Mile Beach on the eastern side of the island, but also worth doing is the inland Central Lakes scenic drive which takes around two hours. Highlights include Pile Valley’s impressive stand of tall, straight Satinay trees, Lake McKenzie, and Lake Wabby lookout for a view of Lake Wabby and Stonetool Sandblow. Lake McKenzie was my pick … I floated around the lake on a giant blow-up tyre for a least two hours before the sunset. At this point, my partner and I were very waterlogged, however, the freshwater lake gave us a feeling of cleanliness and purity. As we made it back to our campsite that night, we had talked about lying under the stars and looking up to the night sky.
We had packed fun dress up Hawaiian themed costumes (which we do often) and were ready for a fun evening together. My partner and I are super competitive, so the person who saw a shooting star first, – or at all – would not have to make dinner the following evening. The race was on. Suddenly I saw one. Jumping up and screaming, I won. Then five minutes after, another one, then he saw one … After six hours of chatting, laughing and looking at the sky, we saw 16 shooting stars. After the first three, I had run out of wishes, so I kept making the same one over and over … what a magical experience. I can see how the idea of staying at one of the many resorts on Fraser Island, like Kingfisher Bay Resort or Eurong Beach Resort would appeal – all beautiful and four stars. And the eco retreats and beachfront units are a treat. But camping for me had Brooke Lowther written all over it. To lay on a rug and watch the sunrise, seeing shooting stars by the dozens and really getting to know my partner better was simply perfect. I will be heading back to Fraser Island very soon.

Welcome Home Edition 6 | March 2021
Premium prices entice long-term owners to list By Michael Kollosche The Gold Coast is in the midst of the most exciting property market this city has seen in well over a decade. While demand continues to outstrip supply, more vendors are venturing out to test the waters buoyed by the promise of prices they may never see again in their lifetime. Some of the city’s best real estate has come to market for the first time in decades - and it could be many more years before some of these tightlyheld properties host a For Sale sign again. A prime hilltop holding in Burleigh Heads changed hands last month after 32 years. The modest 3-bedder at 99 George Street West was treasured by three generations of the one family, whose $360,000 investment in 1989 attracted a winning $4,600,000 bid in 2021. Offered for the first time in 21 years, a much-loved family home at 11 Petrel Avenue, Mermaid Beach was snapped up for $1,950,000 ahead of the scheduled February 28 auction. Purchased for $385,000 in 2000, that sale has set the sellers up for a happy caravaning adventure around Australia in the months to come. The same buyer also secured 9 Petrel Avenue - last sold in 1998 - in an off-market transaction also worth $1,950,000 to create a combined holding of 810m2 within 270 metres of the beach.
2
On a Friday afternoon, the owners of a four-bedroom house on 1455m2 of main river land at 40 Kawana Crescent, Ashmore agreed to list their home of 25 years. By the Monday, a $1,900,000 contract had been signed off-market - more than tripling their 1996 investment of $525,000. Anticipation is now building around a fresh cluster of prime properties that are unlikely to have surfaced in ordinary times. The Waratah penthouse in Main Beach has been home away from home for the Melbourne-based Smorgon family for 20 years. Interest was buzzing ahead of the February 21 auction when six bidders registered for a tilt at the 758m2 residence with a rooftop pool. Post-auction negotiations were ongoing at the time of publication. The owners of the sub-penthouse at exclusive Madison Point are holding up the keys to their slice of Main Beach paradise after 20 years, listing with an asking price of $3,550,000. Every room in this immaculate residence boasts a view that can never be built out - a rare claim on today’s market. Former V8 Supercar driver Paul Weel and wife Emma have listed their dazzling main river residence at 14 Maryland Avenue, Carrara. Designed by Bayden Goddard and set on over an acre of main river land within 15 minutes of the beach, it’s unusual to see an as-new prestige estate of this calibre come to market.
New apartments fly off the plan A similar trend is being noted in the luxury apartment market where lifelong owners are trading large, established family homes for high-end apartments in their preferred location. Downsizers are driving a run of sales at The Lanes Residences in Mermaid Waters where buyers have made 46 expressions of interest since January 7. Interest in The Lanes Residences, Mermaid Waters has surged after Gold Coast City Council gave the green light to Sunland Group’s plans for The Lanes Retail Village. Those plans include 7000m2 of retail laneways interwoven with cafes and restaurants, a fresh food market hall, a health and wellbeing precinct and lakeside community green.
Construction activity has prompted a fresh round of sales at Infinity Broadbeach, where dozers have broken ground on a 40-storey tower offering full and half-floor apartments. Luxury finishes, generous floor plans and the prime location - within 200 metres of the surf, restaurants, The Star Casino and the tram - makes Infinity highly appealing to lifestyle buyers. Kollosche has also recently matched buyers to apartments inside White Main Beach, Dune Main Beach and The Residences on Royal Albert in Sovereign Islands. Our team has access to and knowledge of a wide range of luxury apartment projects across the Gold Coast so please reach out at any time to explain your needs, we’re here to help.
The Gold Coast has led a modest rebound in the new apartment market over recent months as buyers out of Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne line up alongside locals for a lifestyle upgrade. 3

THE FINAL EDITION With Lotus Elise set to end its production run in 2021, now is your last chance to secure one of these elite sports cars.
“THE BEST ‘PURE JOY’ investment of my life … this car puts a smile on my face every time I start it up.” Daryl recently took delivery of his Lotus Elite sports car from Lotus Queensland and is happy to share his story. “25 years ago while at a car show in Las Vegas, I saw this stunning car … my first close up look at a Lotus sports car,” he says. With 40 years experience in the auto repair business, Daryl had worked on and driven pretty much every car on the market. And while he had owned a couple of high-end BMWs, his eyes were always on Lotus. “I followed the Lotus Elise for a number of years, but never got the chance to even see one up close,” he explains. “A few months ago with semi-retirement in hand, I looked into my bucket, and saw one item in it. A Lotus. “The search started, and low and behold one in my favourite colour was available at a reasonable distance from me. Accompanied by his wife, Daryl made the trip to actually see and drive his dream car. “There was a huge hesitation in play, with info in hand about this car being very ‘raw’ and not friendly to drive on the street,” he admits. “But just 20 minutes into a test drive the deal was done in my head. “This is a pure driving machine. “Not as refined as other sports cars I have driven, but just a pure connection between you and the road via the car. “There is no need to drive fast, as driving at legal speeds is still a fun experience, without the insulating qualities of modern high end cars. “There are no thoughts of body roll on a roundabout. No hesitation on passing or changing lanes. Just be one with the car and enjoy.” While his wife still finds driving it a bit intimidating, Daryl couldn’t be happier. “I spent 30 years racing motorcycles, so I understand handling, braking, and acceleration from a pure performance perspective, and the Lotus fills the void left from not bike racing. “As a mechanic I look at my new love and see a hand-built piece of mechanical art. “The exposed shift mechanism is just pure sexy and the no frills finish is just right for a proper sports car.
“The rather loud interior gets tiring after a couple of hours, signalling it is time for a break to stretch your legs, but I am really amazed at how comfortable the seat is, with little padding, “It’s obviously very well engineered with no need for a ton of padding to make up for a poor design. “This car puts a smile on my face every time I start it up. “It is also kind of fun when it attracts a ton of attention when you are out and about in it.”
Daryl’s story is quite timely, with news that the production of the iconic Lotus Elise will cease in 2021. The brand will be entering a new era with their sports car range around the world, however, Queensland Lotus have been fortunate enough to secure an allocation from the last batch of vehicles which will be delivered to Australia throughout the year. Dubbed ’the Final Edition’ they will be the last of their kind made available for sale.

THE PICKERING EXPERIENCE
At Pickering Luxury Garage it’s all about the cars … and the customer.
FROM THE MOMENT you enter the spacious new Southport showroom at Pickering Luxury Garage you can sense something special. Not only is there an amazing collection of prestige marques, collectable cars and oneof-a-kind vehicles on display, there is also a relaxed welcoming ambience that makes you feel right at home. And that is exactly how the team want you to feel. “Our customers are like family,” explains Dealer Principal Peter Lynton. “We hope people walk in here and not only find what they are looking for but that they enjoy the whole experience.” To achieve that aim, Peter and Director Maurie Pickering have put together a group of ‘car people’ who are knowledgeable,

professional and committed to providing the perfect environment for their clients. “Owning a luxury vehicle is aspirational, people have worked hard to reward themselves with their dream car and we have built a culture to reflect that,” says Peter. “We take great pride in not only sourcing the very best cars available but also ensuring they are presented in absolutely perfect condition for the new owner.” From initial contact, whether online or in person, the Pickering experience has been tailored to ensure the client has everything they need to make an informed decision. “Our website gives a real illustration of every car, including detailed photos, up to date specifications and all the relevant information,” explains Peter.
When visiting the showroom itself, customers are encouraged to walk around the cars, take a seat, enjoy a drink or a coffee, and engage with the team. “We want people to feel comfortable, we want people to feel relaxed and we want them to be confident that they are getting great value for money,” says Peter. Of course, cars are at the forefront of this business and every care is taken to ensure the stock meets Pickering’s very high standards. “All our cars have a point of difference,” Maurie explains. “They might have unique paintwork, or very low kilometres for the age of the car. They might be the final model in a line or they have a special interior fit-out.

SUPER SUSTAINABLE Many of the world’s luxury car brands are making the switch to electric power.
WORDS CHRIS NIXON WHEN THE INEVITABLE revolution comes, the conquerors will surge stealthily down our streets and into our driveways with hardly a sound. And mostly we’ll welcome them. Recent news confirms the world’s car makers are gathering speed in their transition to sustainable electric power. In Australia, while there are effectively no government incentives for buyers to choose pure-electric or hybrid cars, they are doing so nevertheless in increasing numbers fed by the availability of models designed to meet environmental standards imposed in other countries. Electric (EV) and hybrid vehicles booked the strongest rate of sales growth of any passenger category last year; diesels are dead. It could be called a silent takeover as EVs bring about one of the greatest changes in motoring history. It’s nothing less than motoring’s equivalent of computers replacing the printing press. Electric cars are not simply cars with electric motors – they’re different in countless ways. The driving experience is different, they’re heavier, shape and space change because of
70 covemagazine.com.au
– Issue 83
newfound design freedoms, service stations will change if not disappear, maintenance requirements with fewer moving parts will be slashed and traffic noise will be reduced. We’ll miss the sounds of finely-turned metal bits thrashing about inside engines of 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12 or even 16 cylinders fired by fossil fuels, but they could be gone forever in new cars in 10 years. For instance, Britain will ban the sale of new internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles from 2030. To meet Britain’s change and others like it, car makers are ahead of the game and starting to show their hands. Jaguar is the latest to announce all its models – SUVs, sedans and sports cars – will be pureelectric just four years from now. As will Maserati, soon to introduce a hybrid petrol-electric Ghibli sedan in Australia as an interim model. McLaren will add its first mainstream hybrid, the Artura, to its Australia catalogue later this year. Lotus has revealed its long-running Elise, Exige and Evora sports cars will be replaced
after this year and they’re expected to have at least hybrid motors before switching to full-EV. The forthcoming $3 million Lotus Evija GT is an EV with almost 2000 horsepower. The internal combustion engine using petrol is a long way from dead, but every car make you know and love is on its way to an electric future. (And trucks too, for that matter.) The trend won’t falter even while debate continues about the sustainability of charging EV batteries from a coal-fired grid. That’s a temporary issue that will pass when engineers finally perfect the ultimate fuel source, hydrogen. Meanwhile, luxury makes BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Tesla and Porsche already offer EVs to Australian drivers. Lexus is coming. So now it’s time to start preparing for this new motoring age. My advice: start looking for a car that isn’t an SUV, that drinks petrol, drips a little oil, deafens the neighbourhood when started and exhibits lovable imperfections. In a decade or two, a prescient choice will pay better than superannuation, tax-free.
PRANCING HORSE TO INTRODUCE NEW THOROUGHBRED
INTRODUCING OUR BUSINESS PROFIT 'GURU'
PURISTS will hate it, but pragmatists will claim Ferrari’s forthcoming first SUV is destined to become the most popular model in the maker’s history. This will be the vehicle for all those drivers who yearn to own a Ferrari but don’t want to wrestle a sports car every day. This will be a Ferrari with four doors and easy access – whether you’re short, tall, fat, thin or have dodgy knees – to a spacious, luxurious cabin. It will offer enough speed, agility and drama to satisfy most drivers wanting the Ferrari experience, even if it’s not in the same realm as a traditional, low-slung sports car. Ferrari is revealing little about the SUV, except that it will be released next year – meaning likely Australian deliveries in 2023 – and has the project code name Purosangue, which is said to mean, appropriately for the Prancing Horse marque, thoroughbred. Ferrari is declining so far to call the Purosangue an SUV, but with all-wheel drive, generous road clearance and wagon-style bodywork that’s what it will be. “I think we’ve found a concept and a package which is on one side a real SUV and will convince SUV customers to buy it, but on the other side there’s a huge differentiation of concept to existing SUVs,” Ferrari’s chief technical officer Michael Leiters told Britain’s Autocar magazine. Engines have not been specified yet, but experts say the chassis could accommodate V6, V8 or V12 units, inevitably to be complemented by plug-in hybrid power to help meet tightening emissions standards. A logical candidate would be the V8 hybrid that produces 1000 horsepower in the recently released SF90 Stradale supercar. Given Ferrari’s design DNA, the Purosangue promises to be a radical and spectacular departure for the famous Italian make. Outside and inside, it is expected to look like no other SUV and offer everyday usability and versatility unprecedented in a Ferrari. And it should be hugely profitable. Unlike his customers, founder Enzo Ferrari was famously unsentimental about his cars, which he built at first only to fund his racing activities. He did vow to never build a four-door car, but in 2022 would he mind seeing the prancing horse badge on a highly-profitable, high-riding, light offroad wagon? I don’t think so.

READY TO SET SAIL Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show returns with exciting new innovations, exhibitors and visitor experiences.
THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE’S premier showcase of boating and marine innovation returns to the Gold Coast this May, in an event which promises to be bigger and better than ever. Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show’s (SCIBS) 32nd edition will again transform Sanctuary Cove’s pristine marina and Marine Village into a bustling industry showcase, welcoming the world’s biggest names in boating. Attracting more than 45,000 visitors each year, with over 300 exhibitors and 600 watercraft on display, SCIBS 2021 is on track to be a spectacular event, showcasing the finest the industry has to offer, from best-inclass prestigious superyachts, power boats, catamarans and sailing boats, as well as RIBs, day boats, fishing boats, sports, ski and tow boats. Additional space will be allocated to premium on-water displays, coupled with significant space for the growing trailer boat segment, expanding both ends of the marine market. This year will also see the unveiling of a new VIP experience, with exclusive venue access, sumptuous catering and a first-class vantage point. An exciting addition for 2021, The Lagoon Lounge focuses on everything the luxurious lifestyle has to offer.
72 covemagazine.com.au
– Issue 83
Overlooking the newly completed Superyacht Marina arm and iconic Lagoon Pool at the InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort, The Lagoon Lounge is an exclusive and elegant space boasting premium food and beverage offerings, ideal for those looking to soak up everything SCIBS has to offer in serious style. The Lagoon Lounge also features private custom-designed corporate cabanas for up to 10 guests, along with a tailored menu celebrating fresh local cuisine, premium beverage packages and a personal food and beverage waiter, making it the place to be for high-end corporate entertainment. SCIBS general manager Johan Hasser said while The Lagoon Lounge is the perfect addition to what is shaping up to be a high-end and luxurious exhibition in 2021, SCIBS continues to cater to a wide range of marine enthusiasts with diverse interests. “SCIBS has proven to be the foremost event on the southern hemisphere’s boating and lifestyle calendar, so it is only fitting that we continue to ramp up our VIP offerings that cater to those looking for an exclusive and luxurious experience,” Johan said. “We gather the best in marine innovation, but we are so much more than a boat show.
“Each year our team strives to create a memorable four days of live entertainment, gourmet food and drink offerings, and enticing activations the entire family can partake in, all of which play a part in the quintessential marine lifestyle.” This year’s Show will give visitors the first look at the magnificent $10 million expansion of the Sanctuary Cove Marina, with state-ofthe-art undercover berths, enabling Sanctuary Cove to accommodate premium recreational vessels from 50 feet to superyachts up to 165 feet. After Covid-19 saw the cancellation of last year’s Show, SCIBS bounced back in truly spectacular style, hosting the hugely successful Sanctuary Cove Boating Festival in November 2020 – one of only three boat shows to be held anywhere in the world last year. “The marine industry on the whole has successfully navigated the past 12 months,” says Johan. “Many in the industry are pleased with sales in recent months as Australians invest in the boating lifestyle, which is safe, fun and can be enjoyed locally as international travel continues to be restricted. “The Sanctuary Cove Boating Festival proved that people want to get out and explore boating
in a safe and family friendly environment, which is what Sanctuary Cove events offer. “We are excited to welcome exhibitors and visitors back to our stunning home.” Many of SCIBS’ key exhibitors such as Riviera, Maritimo, Horizon, Princess, Northside Marine, QMC and Nitro Marine were among the first to secure exhibitor space, backing SCIBS as the must-attend boat show on the Australian calendar. Leigh-Smith Yachts, specialists in luxury motor yachts, were one of the first large exhibitors to sign on for this year’s Show. Ryan Leigh-Smith says SCIBS has always been one of the premier events on the worldwide marine calendar, and he believes the 2021 Show will be another bumper year. “The Sanctuary Cove Boating Festival in November last year proved that people have a huge appetite to get back to family friendly boating events,” Ryan says. “2020 was a big year for us, with a particular upswing in high-end brokerage. “We are really looking forward to the Show and expecting it to be very, very successful.” Mark Western, Director of Horizon Yacht Australia agrees. “Enquiry for the luxury yacht market remains strong and as such, we believe that big things will come from SCIBS 2021,” Mark says.
“We’re excited to be a part of this event and the opportunities it will present.” Greg Haines, Dealer Principal at Princess Yachts Australia, says the importance of SCIBS to the marine industry cannot be underestimated. “SCIBS is the premier boat show in the Southern Hemisphere,” Greg says. “It is a spectacular destination, with the Marine Village, the Marina and the 5-star InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort. “We are looking forward to people coming to see Princess Yachts and we believe it is going to be a great Show.” Injecting hundreds of millions of dollars into the local economy each year, SCIBS has long been regarded as the place “where the marine business does business” with high-end brands exhibiting their latest and greatest vessels and marine products. Beyond its obvious appeal for marine industry movers, shakers, and dreamers alike, SCIBS plays host to a variety of guests who mingle in the bustling Marine Village enjoying non-stop entertainment in a warm, family-friendly ambience, buzzing with roving street entertainment, delicious food and live music.

THE GREAT
ESTATE What’s driving the Gold Coast’s luxury home boom?
WORDS NICK NICHOLS WITH AUSTRALIAN PROPERTY PRICES in January achieving record growth and pushing the market past its pre-COVID highs, it’s not surprising that luxury properties are moving at a pace of their own. Demand has never been stronger for prestige homes, especially the kind that have the trappings of a large family estate, and if the market maintains its momentum this may result in price records tumbling on the Gold Coast in 2021. The listing of Bellagio La Villa in the Tallebudgera Valley has set the bar high with an asking price of $50 million. The 49ha property is rare on the Gold Coast, likened by many to a grand European estate.
74 covemagazine.com.au
– Issue 83
For marketing agent Amir Mian, principal of Amir Prestige, the property is the sum of its parts, an amalgamation of five separate dwellings, including the grand residence, as well as stables, manicured lawns and open spaces along the banks of Tallebudgera Creek, with the smaller holdings offering development potential. “The owner has expanded this holding in recent years and it now offers so much more than you’d find in a large family estate,” he says. Another home that could set a new Gold Coast record is 26-34 Knightsbridge Parade in Sovereign Islands, an expansive home set across four residential lots that was once listed for $45 million.
The home was passed in at auction late last year on a seller’s bid of $32 million and it has a current asking price of $36 million. “Either of these properties could set a new price record this year,” says Amir. Another Queensland high was set last year with the sale of a sprawling modern Isle of Capri property at 41-45 The Promenade, which sold for $27 million. This price equalled the 2008 price of 33-39 Hedges Avenue, Mermaid Beach, an unfinished beachfront mansion set over four lots. It followed a $22.6 million sale in May of a beachfront home at 187-191 Hedges Avenue, Mermaid Beach, to billionaire developer Bob Ell and his wife Bridget.
Amir says there are two main triggers driving demand for homes at the top end of the market. “The first is that since COVID, people now have a completely different perspective on life which is prompting a desire for them to move. “Once people started working from home, some also realised that their home no longer met their needs. “It may not necessarily have been the dream home, dream location or the dream lifestyle they always envisaged. “The second trigger has been access to cheap money as a result of low interest rates. “As term deposits matured and with cash returns so low, people have sought a place to park their money where returns are better, such
as the stock market or the biggest tangible asset available, property.” There is no dispute that Queensland is drawing a big share of Australia’s interstate migration, but Amir says it is locals who have been driving a lot of the current activity and accounting for more than 60 per cent of the Gold Coast prestige property sales. “What has disappeared is the international buyer, specifically the Chinese. However, Sydney and Melbourne buyers have filled this gap. “The 25 per cent that we would sell to internationals is now going to interstate buyers.” The strength of the upper end of the market was also highlighted by Michael Kollosche, principal of prestige property agency Kollosche,
whose team sold six properties priced at more than $11 million each in January alone and recorded more than $180 million in unconditional sales for the month. Some recent sales include the $25 million sale of a Hampton-inspired beachfront home at 1 Heron Avenue, Mermaid Beach, by Simone and Tony Smith in June last year; the $15.75 million sale of 159 Hedges Avenue, Mermaid Beach; and the $12.5 million sale of 297-299 Monaco Street, Broadbeach Waters in January. Michael says compared to a year ago, the market for these properties is gaining its stride. “The uncertainty that we had in the early stages of this market has gone and right now it’s as strong as it’s ever been,” he says. >> Issue 83 – covemagazine.com.au

“The events of the past year have definitely fast-tracked decisions by many people to move to the Gold Coast. “A lot of buyers who were looking to relocate in five years’ time are making that move now. “It’s certainly a lifestyle change for some, but the Gold Coast is attracting a lot of wealthy families from Melbourne and Sydney who are making the decision to migrate here, or who are looking for holiday homes as a result of the restricted international travel. “We’re also seeing a large section of the ageing population looking to spend six months of the year here.” Australian expats are also among those eager to get a foothold in the market either for
76 covemagazine.com.au

investment or in preparation for their eventual return home. “Demand has been supported by the strength of the rental market,” says Michael. “In this past year there have been movie studios and the likes of Netflix on location here on the Coast because it’s a safe destination with first-class amenities to accommodate them. “Production companies are consistently paying rents for furnished luxury homes from $10,000 to $50,000 a week for three to ninemonth terms. “When coupled with high-net-worth investors seeking out three to six-month rentals to escape the southern winter and lockdowns, this has put a strain on the supply of luxury homes for rent.”
Both Amir and Michael agree that listings are harder to find. While some locals are selling, many more are staying put. “We’re finding a lot of owners are turning strong offers down,” says Michael. “They’re not selling because they expect the market to rise even further over the next few years.”

BE PACIFIC
‘Pacific’ is a one of a kind home in a rare beachfront location.
HAVING JUST BEEN VOTED NO. 4 in the Courier Mail's best 50 homes in Queensland – and No. 1 on the Gold Coast – this Chris Clout Design beachfront home is simply a one of a kind that cannot be replicated. Aptly named ‘Pacific, the four-level home is situated in the rarely available Flatrock precinct, which is a North East facing beach that borders Currumbin and Tugun on the Southern end of the Gold Coast. Completed in December 2019 and built by Mactech Constructions, this home is brand new. Featuring magnificent beach and ocean views stretching from Coolangatta in the South past Surfers Paradise and to North Stradbroke Island in the North, it took four years of work from the initial planning stages for the owners to realise their dream. As you enter through the 1.8m wide glass door with Moreton Island Driftwood handles and polished concrete floors, you know this home is going to be special. The first level includes a 5-car garage with a 3.6m high ceiling, a designated surfboard storage area, workshop, mudroom and an insulated home theatre or office. As you head up onto the second level through the VJ cladded stairwell, you start to see the ocean. This level has a spacious family room, a massive outdoor balcony surrounded by integrated planter boxes full of tropical plants, three large bedrooms all with their own walk-in robes and en-suites, a study and the laundry with an adjacent drying courtyard.
88 covemagazine.com.au
– Issue 83
The ceilings are all 3 metres high and there are floor to ceiling stacker doors that slide back to create a massive indoor/outdoor space. When you enter the third level, the first thing you see is the ocean as it blends into the 8 metre long glassed edged pool. There are 12 metres of custom floor to ceiling 3 metre high glass doors that stack off the side to create a seamless feeling between the interior and exterior. The kitchen with its brand new Meile appliances, integrated fridge and freezer and Billie boiled and chilled water tap also features a large window which showcases the view down to Coolangatta. Through a cleverly designed secret door you will find the butler's pantry, with its own workbench, sink and twin Meile dishwashers. The living room again features a plantationstyle raked ceiling and stonecladded wall with a gas-powered fireplace. The adjoining dining room is fringed with an indoor garden, more large windows featuring plantation shutters out to the external tropical landscaped gardens and, of course, views out to the ocean. The pool deserves special mention. It is an engineering feat, as it is canter-levered towards the beach, with 12 metres of glass edge on two sides and two built in double sunbed pads to relax in the sun. The fourth level features the Master suite which is surrounded on three sides with glass featuring electric blinds and sheer curtains.
The views are just 'next level' from here. There is a large ensuite with double vanities, double shower, a stand alone bath and a large glass window that brings in the adjoining tropical garden which provides privacy but also enhances that plantation feel. Then you discover the separate ‘His and Her’ walk-in robes. In fact, Hers is a large dressing room complete with a stunning plantation style chandelier, full mirror and centre display unit. You really can get away from it all here. Everything is within short walking distance, including Currumbin and Tugun Surf Clubs, Tugun Village with its trendy cafes and restaurants, hotel, shops, post office and bank. The new Oceanway is at your doorstep which allows you to walk or ride along the beach. Coolangatta Airport is only 5 minutes away, so too is the M1 Freeway which will take you directly to Brisbane. Due to a recent change in Planning Laws you can no longer build a house of this height in this location, making this a truly rare opportunity to secure a very unique Gold Coast showpiece beachfront home.

SAILING NEW WATERS
withNicholl and Young
Raising anchor to seek new horizons and opportunity is what’s on the agenda for Sunshine Coast’s beloved waterfront property specialist, Stacy Downey. After living and working on our magical shores for now 14 years, she has brought the sea change to many who have spent their nights dreaming of finding their perfect waterfront home. This time, it’s Stacy’s turn to find the meaningful change for herself. When she took a glance at her compass, all points were leading to Nicholl and Young Property, a boutique real estate agency nestled within the heart of Buderim. After opening their doors for the first time in 2020, Nicholl and Young have since quickly and firmly cemented themselves as market leaders, and delivered outstanding service to both Buderim and the wider Sunshine Coast community. Both with a passion for working with
integrity and honesty, it seemed like a match made in heaven for Stacy to jump aboard and sail with the Nicholl and Young team. With a client-focused approach to working with their profile of clients, Stacy easily uncovered the morals and values Nicholl and Young hold when she sailed into her new office for the first time. A top-quality approach and a team who genuinely care about their client’s needs and dreams was what she found – elements that exactly align with the authenticity and passion Stacy presents herself with every day. If you are looking to make a fresh start as we recover from the rough seas we have endured the last year - choose an agent that really cares, Stacy’s door is always open for you in 2021. It would be our pleasure to welcome you in.

2021 MARKET UPDATE WITH STEVE HUNT | MEDIAHUNT.COM.AU
WHEN OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS South East Queensland’s property market continues to soar.
88 Burleigh
Imperial Square
IN MORE THAN 20 YEARS in the development industry in Southeast Queensland, I’ve never seen so many opportunities come across my desk as the last six months. It’s truly incredible. I’m sure many in the industry are thinking the same thing – to say business is booming on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coasts would be an understatement. I’ve never liked the term boom because it also implies there could be a bust, but I have to say the fundamentals in the SEQ property sector give no indication of the latter. Strong interstate migration, a growing downsizer market, the work from home phenomenon, greater work flexibility, and a philosophical post-Covid shift in thinking about how – and where – people want to live is driving SEQ’s incredibly healthy property sector. Thankfully this phenomenal recovery isn’t just restricted to middle or high income earners – with first homebuyers now able to get onto the property ladder thanks to unprecedented government stimulus measures and record low interest rates. I don’t know a tradesperson who is struggling to find work. On the contrary they are, as a friend said to me recently, ‘busier than one armed bricklayer in Beirut’. I also spoke to a businessman who installs and sells solar panels across the southeast and he can’t find staff for work netting $3000 a week. It really is an incredible period for this industry at a time when tourism has lagged under the shadow of border closures.

Hopefully this will change soon with the emergence of a vaccine. From our own clients’ news desk, we have so much to report. The best-selling projects on the Gold Coast over the past six months are predominantly clients of Media Hunt. HERE THEY ARE: • $90 million in sales in less than three weeks after the December 27 launch of Miles Residences, the first stage of the $380 million Kirra Beach Hotel re-development. • The complete sell-out of $74 million S and S Projects Flow Residences at Rainbow Bay for an average price of $3.5 million. • The near sell-out of all three projects by Brisbane based Spyre Group scattered along the Gold Coast – the $77 million Natura at Burleigh Heads, the $79 Elysian at Broadbeach and $25 million Maya at Kirra (Spyre has tapped into such a strong beachfront downsizer market that it is also planning a new project called Cala Dei Residences at Coolangatta on the iconic Kommune Hotel site). • Evergreen Gold Coast development stalwart Roberto Badalotti has brought forward plans for the second stage of his $1.2 billion Imperial Square at Southport off the back of strong sales in the first stage Regal Residences. • More than $107 million in sales in one calendar year in the Serenity 4212 masterplanned community on the northern Gold Coast. • More than $70 million in sales in the second stage of George Mastrocostas’ $140 million 1 Grant Avenue which is re-shaping Hope Island.
Kirra Point
• The best ever Ray White Surfers Paradise ‘Event’ auctions in 30 years with millions of dollars in sales in January. So how is the rest of the year shaping up? There are plenty of new projects among our stable of clients that are set to enter the market in 2021. These will play a major hand in re-shaping their respective locations. Brisbane-based Bottega Group is making some great inroads as it prepares to launch in its luxurious 123OBR apartments at Broadbeach. Other pending projects include Allure Property Corporation’s 88 Burleigh on The Esplanade at Burleigh Heads, Spyre Group’s Cala Dei at Coolangatta, and the Old Burleigh Theatre Arcade on Goodwin Terrace – all of which are pending approval by council. There are great signs emerging for Brisbane’s ‘lifestyle’ market with Pikos Group finalising plans to launch a luxury residential development on one of the city’s most acclaimed sites overlooking the CBD, having acquired the spectacular Kangaroo Point site from Singapore’s Banyan Tree. Bottega Group is also planning a residential project targeting the downsizer market in Bulimba while Townsville’s Honeycombes Property Group – no stranger to Brisbane – will in coming weeks launch its new residential offering at Ferny Grove where it is set to launch a $140 million mixed use project. With the challenges of last year behind us, we are embracing 2021 as a great year for property and we wish the entire communities of SEQ every success with the economic recovery underway.

ICONIC ISLAND ESTATE Hayman Island announces limited release of 15 luxury residential villas for sale.
MULPHA AUSTRALIA, owner of the iconic InterContinental Hayman Island Resort is taking the holiday home to a new level with the release of a limited number of ultra-luxury villas in the idyllic tropical surrounds of Hayman Island on the Great Barrier Reef. Designed to deliver the ultimate extended escape for residents, Hayman Estates brings to the market 15 elite private villas offering spectacular views of the Whitsundays combined with Hayman’s famed resort lifestyle. The release comes on the heels of a spectacular $150 million refurbishment of InterContinental Hayman Island Resort and its recent recognition as Australia’s best resort in the annual HM Awards. Hayman Estates offers unrivalled privacy and stunning views of pristine Whitsunday waterways all within easy walking distance of the prestigious Hayman InterContinental resort, restaurants, pool, health spa, gymnasium, leisure and marina facilities. Hayman Estates is limited to a total of 21 residences in a gated enclave with six residences having been completed in prior years. The new villas have been designed to meet the increasing demand for luxury lifestyle product in iconic Australian leisure destinations. “The Whitsundays region and the World Heritage Great Barrier Reef offers an unmatched lifestyle with direct airline access to the major
Australian east coast capital cities making it ideal for people to use as either a residential base or a holiday investment property.” said Mulpha GM of Sales and Development, John Hughes. These competitively priced villas offer exceptional design quality, value, and the ultimate in tropical elegance. Once sold there will be no further similar villas included within the Hayman Island masterplan being surrounded by World Heritage National Park. “It’s your own slice of paradise set in one of the most sought-after leisure destinations in the World,” John said. “This is privacy at its best or simply a luxurious resort living at its best.” Owners will have the option for private exclusive use or adding their property to the luxury hotel pool for domestic and international guests seeking a private retreat with all resort services. Hayman is expected to benefit from solid domestic market demand and a strong resurgence in international demand for luxury Australian resorts once international travel resumes. The fully-ensuited villas offer living spaces specially designed for the tropical setting with an open plan layout, highlighted by a large fully appointed kitchen, dual living areas with balconies, stretching to the private swimming pool.
Extending the luxury connection with nature is an expansive outdoor terrace with private courtyard and spa bath. An oversized garage for two golf buggies and storage completes the design that has been intently focused on ensuring the ease of luxury living. The villas incorporate premium finishes with low maintenance natural materials in bedrooms and living areas, natural stone and tiling in bathrooms, expansive windows to all bedrooms and open living areas. They will also be designed to minimise carbon footprints with energy efficient fittings and solar electricity. Construction of the architecturally designed villas is being fully managed by Mulpha and construction of the first villas is expected to commence in March 2021. Villa residents and their guests can enjoy a full suite of resort services, including concierge and housekeeping, access to chefs, wait staff and babysitters, in addition to the resort’s restaurants, health spa, pool, gymnasium and recreational activities. Hayman Estate residents will enjoy full 24-hour on-island security services, with CCTV and access control. All villas are maintained by the dedicated on-island engineering department, while all villa interiors are maintained by resort housekeeping.

LUXURY LIVING
STYLED TO PERFECTION Lynton & Forrester to launch stylish new store at 10 James St, Brisbane.
LUXURY FURNITURE RETAILER and interior design team, Lynton & Forrester have very exciting news. “We are pleased to announce that we are opening a new store in Brisbane in the fabulous James St,” says co-owner Matthew Lynton. “After a difficult year here in Australia and around the world, we thought it is time to expand into the Brisbane market and have a new challenge.” Located in the former David Jones building and snuggled under PLACE Realty, the new Lynton & Forrester will be home to exciting imports from the United States, as well as showcasing Moran Australia. “All our upholstery will be Moran Australia which we are so fortunate to be able to reintroduce into the Brisbane and Queensland market,” says Matthew. Moran has a rich 60-year history, and is now arguably Australia's longest standing premium upholstered furniture manufacturer.

– Issue 83
“Moran has been an Australian icon of quality and design and the demand for it has been unprecedented,” says Matthew. “Customers have come back to looking for a product that will stand the test of time, with good design and fine fabrics. “Surprisingly clients want a mix of leather and fabric at about equal rates, and the return to fabric after the domination of leather is refreshing.” Lynton & Forrester’s upholstery range not only consists of sofas, but modular sofas, sofa beds, occasional chairs, bed stools, bedheads, leather recliners and comfort chairs. The range of leather and fabrics is outstanding and can be customised to suit your lifestyle. Moran consultants are trained in every aspect of the product and will guide you through the selection of product, fabric or leather and assist you to make that all important choice. When you purchase a Moran product you can be confident in their slogan: Relax it’s a Moran, Relax in style.
“The iconic design and collective passion that every Moran piece contains is based on the hard work, dedication and pride they have in the product they offer to Australians,” says Matthew. “This is passed on to customers through delivering good old-fashioned service and dedication in positively contributing to Australian design, and keeping handcrafting techniques of manufacturing alive.” This year will see Lynton & Forrester’s new store brimming with furnishings that they have chosen to suit the Gold Coast and Brisbane lifestyle. From imported buffets to coordinating occasional furniture and accessories, they aim to bring you the best choice to enhance your home. Anthony Forrester has been working hard to choose this season’s ranges, with some exciting pieces arriving. Lamps from the States, in this season’s soft golds, silver and taupe; imported American buffets, in finishes of silver, antique gold and brass; occasional chairs with innovative designs in boucle, velvet and brocade, all with swivel base and comfort in mind. An exclusive range of Murano glass and stunning accessories is on order and will complement the furnishings. Other designer wares to look out for include Carroll Boyes and Jonathan Adler from the U.S.A.
And to complement city living, there are some sophisticated buffets and consoles in black American oak and brass, harking back to the Art Deco period. There is also a lovely range of bespoke candles and air fragrances arriving for both stores, from Flower Box in Western Australia. All natural, hand poured and available in the most amazing fragrances, which include Amber Orchid, Cucumber and Wild Basil, Sweet Oranges and Lavender, and Fig Leaf and Cedar, there are overall ten choices in candles, interior perfumes, and a stunning Hallmark diffuser. Having studied in New York, Santiago and Brisbane, Matthew has many years of experience in the design industry, working closely with clients to create their ideal homes. His style is eclectic and varied with a love of colour and texture and he forecasts this season’s colours will reflect six main tonal trends. Dusky Orchid, to evoke a sense of solace and calm after a tumultuous year. Frosty Green, a soft neutral grey green sending feelings for a healthy home and conscious consumerism, which pairs nicely with Jaffa Orange for a touch of nostalgia. Palace Blue, a bold and daring choice and a softer cousin to Cobalt Blue, will feature in all manner of furnishings from table tops and high gloss finishes to fabrics and accessories.
Langoustino, Matthew’s personal favourite, is a soothing sunset of earthy coral, terracotta and shell fish, that draws on tonal colour combinations to reflect a restorative and comforting mood. And finally, Shale Green, back to Mother Nature’s healing colour in fabrics, upholstery and glassware which is sure to make vegans smile. Lynton & Forrester’s Design Division will be able to source fabrics, wallpapers and lighting to suit your renovation and projects and are happy to assist with your selections and provide a professional design service. Both Matthew and his partner Anthony are passionate about design and furniture and are available for consultation by appointment. “We can't wait to welcome you to our beautiful showrooms and to meet you and help you furnish and decorate your home or apartment,” they say. “Please call in to our Gold Coast showroom at 112 Bundall Rd, and we also look forward to welcoming you to the new 10 James St showroom in Brisbane to discuss your furnishing and decorating requirements. “Here at Lynton & Forrester, we aim to provide excellent service and an exceptional product, handcrafted to perfection, because we truly believe ’just one piece can transform a room’.”

TAURUS 21 Apr – 21 May
VIRGO 24 Aug – 23 Sept
The recent Virgo full moon illuminated a fresh understanding of someone close – and perhaps even of yourself. The key to happiness over the next two months is to avoid obstinacy as it will simply stall your progress. In March, you'll gain insight into a business or personal partner. Romance could blossom now, so plan a treat and, if you're single, look for love, it's there!
CAPRICORN 23 Dec – 20 Jan
You're about to experience a fresh chapter at home or with someone in your family, so take things in your stride as this will help you to produce a positive outcome. You may receive good news to do with a group, friend or organisation, so if you have been planning to begin a fresh phase in cahoots with a new social or work circle, ensure you set the wheels in motion.

PISCES 20 Feb – 20 Mar
You're ready for something new, especially in your personal life. Some Leos will be more focuses on making changes financially now. Consider ways to find more time for yourself, and to establish strategies that will create a healthy daily existence. A romantic March may be ideal, but if you are disappointed in love, there will be a silver lining over these two months.
You're about to begin a fresh chapter in a close relationship. You'll find ways to discuss your projects, plans and wishes much better. Ventures undertaken now are likely to bear fruit, so take the initiative and float some ideas and set wheels in motion. This is a good time to consider sharing space differently, and to focus on creating a rosy picture in your domestic life.
You'll appreciate the opportunity to be more practical about organising your daily schedule so that it suits your needs better. Discussions to do with work, wellbeing and your daily routine can take you into fresh pastures. Developments in March and April will provide the chance to work out if you've been labouring under a delusion – and to put things right if you have.
You could turn a corner financially and, at the very least, get on top of your budget. Some crabs will discover that improving the dynamics in your love life will be easier, and you'll feel more secure and on-target with your various duties. March is a particularly romantic, spiritual and creative month, so aim to boost these areas in your life as your interests could blossom.

You'll gain the chance to boost family and interpersonal dynamics and this will move your relationships forward. This may occur because of wonderful events – or challenging dynamics. Either way, the door that opens will breathe fresh air into your life. Romance could blossom and creative Scorpios could be particularly inspired now, so be prepared to be busy.

The inevitability of change will become apparent, and this will become remarkably obvious via a trip, talk or negotiation. If you feel changes now represent a loss, focus on the positives. There will be many. You may simply not see them yet. A domestic development could be ideal so consider the variables. Romance and a deeper understanding of spirituality will inspire you.
A change regarding your finances is on the way and also a change in your personal life. A mini review of these two areas could be productive, especially concerning your priorities. Ask if you get enough time for your favourite activities and people? If not, find the time to be able to express your true values and find more purpose in life now. You'll succeed with your efforts.
Be prepared to put in hard work and a new chapter will flourish. You may receive news or uncover facts that are to your advantage. Your association with a group, organisation or friend can blossom, even if some logistics require detailed attention. You may be repaid a debt. Romance could blossom, especially in March, but if you feel disappointed, there will be a silver lining.
