WELCOME to our ver y first Grand Homes edition. Did you know that the Gold Coast now has 12 suburbs where the median house price exceeds $1 million? And in Brisbane that figure is 91 suburbs? Whether you live in one of these magnificent homes or aspire to do so, the images and information inside these pages is sure to ignite your imagination. For example, our cover was shot in a stunning waterfront home at Paradise Waters. With views for miles and exquisite décor throughout, this property is the epitome of ‘grand’. Of course, a house doesn’t need to be at ground level to meet the criteria. The Gold Coast is also home (pardon the pun) to some of the country’s most stunning high-rise apartment buildings, both existing and in development. We showcase several of these new projects in the Property Portfolio section including the refined Belvue Broadwater and the super-sized Chalk by the Gallery Group. And of course, the Kollosche Prestige insert is brimming with properties on the grandest scale. Moving on to the rest of the magazine. Our feature interview is with our very own Nicole Kidman.
The Aussie superstar has taken on the challenging role of Lucille Ball in the hit film, Being the Ricardos. Tipped to win an Oscar for her performance, Nicole admits she still gets nervous before each and every performance. Speaking of performances, albeit on a very different level, our motoring expert Chris Nixon got up close and personal with a monster RAM pick-up for this issue’s road test ... it is seriously big and definitely impressive. Meanwhile Marj discovered the health benefits of food synergy during a stay at Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat, Tony uncovered some very mystical wines on Bent Road and I had a chat with Titan’s Chairman Dennis Watt who is our latest City Icon. Finally, we head to Sanctuary Cove to preview the upcoming Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show and catch up with Brooke as she spends a pamper day in the Marine Village. If you would like experience this for yourself, be sure to check out the details of our latest competition on page 26.

HAVING A
BALL
Hollywood superstar Nicole Kidman is winning hearts – and awards – for her portrayal of Lucille Ball in the hit film, Being the Ricardos.
28 covemagazine.com.au
89 – Issue 88
WORDS JENNY DAVIS / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE HAVING ALREADY WON a Golden Globe and received a SAG Award nomination for her performance as Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos, Nicole Kidman is the hot favourite to win Best Actress at the 94th Academy Awards. The Hollywood superstar plays the iconic US TV comedy actress alongside Javier Bardem, who stars as Lucille’s husband and sitcom co-star Desi Arnaz. The film – which is written and directed by Academy Awardwinner Aaron Sorkin – gives a revealing glimpse of the couple’s complex romantic and professional relationship. It also takes audiences into the writers’ room, onto the soundstage and behind closed doors with Ball and Arnaz during one critical production week of their ground-breaking sitcom I Love Lucy. In this brand-new chat, Nicole talks about awards, how the project came to her and her preparation for the role. She also discusses working with Aaron Sorkin, the incredible cast she played alongside, the challenges of the part and more.

Congratulations on an amazing performance. What does it mean to you to be nominated for awards? I’m incredibly grateful. The acknowledgement means so much, particularly for this role.

How did this project find its way to you? And how much did you know about Lucille Ball beforehand? It found its way to me as an actor through my agent. I think he’d sort of put me forward for it and Aaron [Sorkin] processed it and then he came and said, ‘Actually, I think you’d be really good for this and would you Zoom with me’ because it was in the middle of the pandemic. It was kind of an audition in a weird way because it was like going, ‘Hi Aaron, here I am and I know I don’t really look like her but …’ He was so generous and kind and said, ‘I would really love you to do this’. So I said, ‘Yes, OK’. As is my nature, I jump in, spontaneously, and then I look back and go, ‘Uh oh what have I done? Now I’ve got to do all the work’. And it’s a lot of work. It just is, you know, to play her properly and to understand her and her mind because I didn’t know anything about her. I knew the show but nothing about Lucille Ball. I didn’t even know about Desilu Productions. I didn’t know any of that story. Which was a really good thing in a way because I was able to be the recipient of the story and go, ‘This is a great story, this is actually worth telling’ because so much of it was things I didn’t know.
5577 8677 M O N D AY T O S AT U R D AY
This is a pretty accurate representation of her life. Were you surprised to learn it was all true? I actually thought the final moments when Desi calls and the man on the end of the phone is [J Edgar] Hoover, was all dramatic license. I was shocked when he said, ‘Oh no no, that happened.’ and I was like, ‘Really? This is fantastic’. It made me love Desi – what a fantastic thing to do to protect his wife and how brilliant. As Aaron says, the question he would have loved to have asked Desi is, ‘How did you know Hoover? How could you call him like that?’ so those things are not answered. >> 89 – covemagazine.com.au Issue 89Issue – covemagazine.com.au 29

FEATURE But in terms of just having to battle the network to be allowed to be pregnant on screen – I didn’t know that either. Then when she had the baby it was the highest rating show – crazy, right? And I had no idea she was accused of being a communist. I’m embarrassed I didn’t know these things about this extraordinary woman. Did you think of Lucy and Lucille as two different characters while making the film? I didn’t initially but Aaron was really definitive vocally. He said, ‘No, no, Lucille Ball is very different’. And the younger Lucille Ball is also very different because there’s the Lucille Ball that is hugely successful, with the pressure of the I Love Lucy show and 60 million viewers versus the Lucille Ball who is trying to get a job or trying to get a gig. There’s the bruised, battered Lucille when she’s got the make-up on and she’s just sort of on the sidelines and she’s completely obsessed with Desi –there’s all those little titbits. And then when I ask him out on the date, which is a scene I really love, or he asks me – the writing in that is just so exquisite. It’s so wonderful just to stand there, smoke the cigarette and kind of flirt with him. But she doesn’t flirt in a coquettish way, Lucille, she flirts in a very, very what you’d call focussed, alpha way – even though inside she’s deeply needy and vulnerable. But she’s not going to negotiate on that, that is like, ‘You can either give that to me or you can’t and I need to know up front because I don’t have the time’. You know? ‘My clock is ticking and I want to be able to have a kid and are you going to be that guy for me or I’ll move on.’ I love talking about this role as you can probably tell. [laughs] You’ve always been brilliant with accents but you really capture her voice: I had a great dialect coach [Thom Jones] and he worked with me to create the Lucy voice first and then he worked with me on the Lucille voice. And there’s also a rhythm to her and the way in which she … there’s a rhythmic sound which once I sort of musically got that, suddenly it started to come. We didn’t go at it phonetically, we went at it through ear so it’s almost like where you play music by ear instead of reading music – that would be how I’d describe it. Sometimes with an accent you’ll attack it phonetically and sometimes you can attack it musically … this was the musical way in. Then it was very related to all of the emotions and the body language because she moved her hands in a particular way – Lucille did, not Lucy. Lucy had a different … anyway we’re going down the rabbit hole now. [laughs]

When did you know that Javier Bardem would be playing Desi? At the beginning. Aaron said, ‘This is our guy, he’s your Desi’ and I said, ‘Great’ because he wanted to cast the two, I think. Every actor that gets offered a role in the film says ‘yes’ – I’m not used to that –and every actor that auditions is desperate to get the role. I mean a lot of times, casting is, you know, ‘Oh well’ and then sometimes actors will go, ‘No, I don’t want to do that’ – but not one actor said no. So yeah, there are so many great actors in this and every single performance in this film I look at and go [opens mouth]. And every actor, when they showed up on set, was really nervous … every one of them. J.K. [Simmons], even though inside he says he was very nervous, he showed it the least. Others, we wear our heart on our sleeve more. There’s also that desire to come in and deliver because they are great scenes to play, great storytelling, you don’t want to let the team down. And there were days when I was surrounded by actors standing on the set, particularly the scene where I’m on the [I Love Lucy] set and I’m going, ‘No, go back’ – it’s very, very precise the language in that.
“I get to be passionate about my work, but it’s not work, it’s a combination of my passion and my life and my artistic alignment and contribution.” – Nicole Kidman But there’s also anxiety, manifesting as control, and so many different layers to it. Then having to go back into the Lucy voice and the Lucy character and switch back and forth. It was basically a ten-minute scene and Aaron shot it in one. Then he shot it from some different angles but we had a bunch of cameras operating and I was just like, [whispers] ‘Help!’ to the other actors. I would look over and see Tony Hale and J.K. and Javier and I’d be like, ‘Help me!’ in between takes and they would just be my champions and say, ‘You got this. Don’t worry’. It was a struggle at times. You get that on stage a lot of the time but you don’t get it as much on film because it’s just more disjointed … this was like doing a stage play. >>

Many of the cast in this have been stage actors, it has that feel? Yeah, well J.K. goes back to A Few Good Men [a play by Aaron Sorkin] and being an understudy. When you’ve been in this industry for a period of time you do start to cross paths and you’re coming back and you’re all threading through each other’s lives so a lot of times there will be a history there. Have you been wanting to work with Aaron Sorkin for some time? Yeah. I mean I never thought I would be put into one of his films. It just seemed so far off because his films get cast and you hear they are being made and you’re like, ‘Oh who’s in that?’ So it was really nice when it came my way. I adore him. You’ve played real people before but no-one quite as recognised and revered as Lucille Ball? I mean Virginia Woolf was a different challenge because people didn’t actually really know what she looked like. And vocally, I remember coming to Stephen Daldry and I had found a small recording of her voice and I really latched onto that . He was like, ‘No, no, no, absolutely not. You’re not to sound like that. I just want you to sound British’ so that was very different.

So when it really came and hit me in the face what was going to be needed, I was already too far in. What was the biggest challenge of playing this role (not suggesting you struggle with anything as an actor)? I always struggle, no, that’s an important thing to say – always struggle. Heart-pounding and adrenalin and nerves and feel like, ‘My gosh’ – yeah, I mean I struggle. I’m never, ever going, ‘I’m going to come in now and just fly through this or coast through it’.’ There’s always an enormous amount of trepidation and fear and that’s why I think it is very much about saying, ‘Are we going to get there?’ And honestly, some days and takes and stuff, it’s like, ‘Are we going to have to reshoot that? Oh, we don’t have the money to reshoot it. Yikes, are they going to be able to pull that together?’ I mean that’s how you constantly feel … ‘Am I getting this? Am I getting it?’ You know that whole terrible inner voice that can really sabotage. There was a screening of this film, it was in Westwood, I will never forget it. It was the first time we showed the movie and it could have been a really, really bad but it was the opposite.
I didn’t expect what was coming so it was probably one of the most emotional moments in my actual career in terms of how much I was holding in and how much I did not realise was riding on it and all that being released that night. It was just an extraordinary moment. It’s like when you’re on stage and suddenly there is applause at the end and it’s really genuine and you can feel the applause and it comes through you and you’re like, ‘We might have a shot here, this has connected and this is vibrating in a way where people are affected.’ It’s an astounding feeling. You’ve had such an incredible career and you seem to just get better and better as an actress and you’re still so passionate about the work you do? It’s really exciting. And to be this age and still excited – that’s in you – that’s the thing where you go, ‘Well, that’s why I’m an actor because I can still feel excitement’. And I get to be passionate about my work, but it’s not work, it’s a combination of my passion and my life and my artistic alignment and contribution.
CITY ICONS
TEAM PLAYER As the Titans prepare to do battle on field, off field Chairman Dennis Watt is a powerhouse of organisation, networking and community spirit. A FORMER JOURNALIST and newspaper executive, Titans Chairman Dennis Watt lives and breathes footy. In his former role as general manager for rugby league for News Corporation, he helped stabilise and then sell the Melbourne Storm to its existing owners following the club’s salary cap issues of 2010, culminating in a premiership in 2012. This was followed by a four year stint as Chairman of the Brisbane Broncos. Since taking on the same role at the Titans four years ago, Dennis has witnessed the club’s growing success in both the NRL competition and the Gold Coast community. How did you get involved in with the Titans? As I was leaving the Broncos at the end of 2017 after the construction of the club’s new $27m high performance headquarters, I was approached by the Frizelle and Kelly families after they had won their bid to take over the Gold Coast Titans’ licence. I had long admired the efforts of Darryl Kelly and Rebecca Frizelle while they were on the earlier Titans’ board to do their very best to ensure that the club was a genuine source of pride and inspiration for the Gold Coast and northern New South Wales. They are people of great integrity and selflessness and with a real passion to serve their communities. With the destiny of the club fully in their hands, they were even more determined to ensure the club was successful. Their vision was to create a pathway for young boys and girls all the way from grassroots to national and international representation. It is so heartening now that after four years we are working closely with schools and local clubs and leagues to provide those pathways. We are genuinely proud that we now have a respected NRL side; a new and talented NRLW team making its debut this year and we will also field women’s netball teams in the state Sapphire and Ruby competitions.

What is your role and what does it entail? As Chair, my focus is very much on ensuring we maintain high standards and healthy relationships with each other and our key stakeholders. When you start, the first two priorities are having the right people in place working within the right culture. We have been blessed from the outset with a talented and committed board. I worked closely with the owners in the early stages ensuring we had the right leadership team in place and now under CEO Steve Mitchell and Head Coach Justin Holbrook they are continuing to build the capacity of their teams. We are fortunate that we have many of the very best people in Australian sport in key roles at the club. What is the most challenging part of your job? With many of the building blocks now in place, the focus is on incremental improvement and the maintenance of high standards. We need to keep striving and aiming high. The job is never done. There is a continual focus on living up to our values and our determination to make ourselves, our families and our communities proud.
We aim to inspire and unite all those whose lives we touch. And the most rewarding? This is an organisation with a massive heart and there is a DNA here which consists of love of colleagues; love of club; love of game; and love of community. I simply love seeing the uplifting impact we have as a club and a game on the people who follow us. Our community work in the fields of inclusion, Indigenous education, game participation and the disability sector is simply heartening and best in class. Who or what inspires you? Those people who dedicate themselves to serving others and on the Gold Coast, or Australia generally, I can think of no finer example than the Queensland winner of the Australian of the Year last year, Dr Dinesh Palipana, the state’s first quadriplegic medical doctor. Dr Dinesh, a disability advocate and qualified lawyer, works in emergency at the Gold Coast University Hospital and is a doctor for our club’s disability teams. He is also involved in ground-breaking research in the spinal injury field.
To me, it seems that Dr Dinesh’s every waking moment is dedicated to helping others. He is selfless to a fault and whenever you talk to him, he is simply so grateful for the opportunity he has to serve others. A truly great and inspirational Australian. Is there any particular project or goal on your ‘wishlist’? Well, we are definitely in the business of bringing premierships to the Coast, whether NRL, NRLW or Titans’ netball teams. But we are also very much looking forward to owning and developing our own home, whether here at Parkwood where we are tenants or elsewhere on the Gold Coast. We need more space to accommodate our new teams and our growing junior base. What is your vision for the Titans? As mentioned, our vision is that our communities are genuinely proud and inspired that we represent them, both on and off the field. By excelling in rugby league, netball or through our community programmes, we want others to be inspired to excel in their own fields. At the end of the day we will be judged by our performances and we are mindful that winning amplifies all our good work in the community. But personally I am so proud of this club and the people in it. As Nelson Mandela said, sport really does have the power to change the world for the better and here at the Titans we believe we are privileged to represent this area and its people.
“This is an organisation with a massive heart and there is a DNA here which consists of love of colleagues; love of club; love of game; and love of community.” – Dennis Watt What legacy would you like to leave behind both on a personal level and from a Titans point of view? I would like to think that I was a catalyst to help create opportunities for others and that this club and this wonderful game of ours continues to grow as a genuine force for good. Outside of work, what are your interests/hobbies? I am still a news’ junkie which means I spend too much time following it all at local, state, national and international level. But equally I have a love of history, believing in the mantra that unless you learn from the mistakes of history, you are condemned to repeat them. I have a special interest in military leadership. In the case of Australians who served, I seek to honour them through learning their stories and valuing their sacrifices. Lest we forget. What makes the Gold Coast home? While the Coast truly is one of the most beautiful and most liveable places in the world, there is an energy and an entrepreneurial can-do spirit here which sets us apart. From here, you get the feeling anything is possible.

TREAT YOURSELF Enjoy the ultimate pamper day out at Sanctuary Cove.
WORDS BROOKE LOWTHER SANCTUARY COVE is well known for its retail and dining offerings but did you know it is also your go-to destination for a pamper day? From hair and beauty to health and wellness, this popular precinct ticks all the boxes, as I discovered on a recent visit. My first stop … Studio Eclettico Hair & Co for an uplifting brow sculpt and blow dry. The experience was sensational. Founded in 2017 by Zavier Lott, Studio Eclettico began in a small salon in Hope Island. Now boasting a larger light-filled salon, with rattan pendant lights, leather chairs and brushed gold mirrors for a warm welcoming atmosphere, this

relaxing oasis offers a range of luxury hair and beauty services including brow sculpting and threading, makeup application and blow dry treatments. Next on my agenda was a visit to The VAULT Skin Lab Sanctuary Cove. Walking in, you are instantly transported to a spa in the Mediterranean. Here, the best of modern clinical treatments and product ingredients are combined with the tradition of ‘old-school’ beauty to create new and modern approaches to skin health. Cathy Radford has distinguished herself as a passionate advocate of aesthetic skin improvement so knew I was in good hands.
With over 15 years’ experience within her practices in Orange Country USA, Sydney and now in Sanctuary Cove, Cathy specialises in tailored treatments and products designed to enhance an individual’s skin and complexion. There are a wide range of treatments on offer, however, I chose the restful and rejuvenating 60-minute Signature Facial. It was divine and I will certainly be heading back for my monthly facial treatments. As part of my health and wellness experience I had also scheduled an appointment with Elite Skin, the number one Advanced Non-Surgical Cosmetic Clinic on the Gold Coast.
Step into their tranquil, attractive and professional skin and cosmetic centre on Masthead Way where they will take care of all your skin concerns and desires for improvements or change. Specialising in skin treatments and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures, the practice takes a more holistic and nurturing approach, with each treatment program tailored to the clients’ unique concerns and conditions. I had a few skin concerns and the fact that they could accommodate these, and offer a long-term plan not just a quick fix, made me very comfortable and confident.
While technically not pampering, my last stop of the day was Enhanced Dental. From simple procedures to more complex cases, this family-friendly practice specialises in improving your oral health as well as the appearance of your teeth. They boast a comprehensive range of cosmetic and general procedures including emergency dentistry, teeth whitening, orthodontics (teeth straightening), dentures, porcelain veneers, crowns, implants and much more. What I liked about the team at Enhanced Dental was their open and friendly approach to each patient.
Helping to beautify smiles and boost confidence, the Sanctuary Cove dental clinic is also a specialist in smile makeovers … perfect for me as I definitely want to keep my smile looking the best it can be. Feeling relaxed and rejuvenated after an indulgent day at Sanctuary Cove, I carried on with my busy life (but I am determined to make time for another visit as soon as possible). March is Beauty Month at Sanctuary Cove so be sure to check the website for more information and exclusive offers.

Try a statement piece of furniture, an eye-catching artwork or a striking chandelier. With more people than ever before continuing to work from home, interior design in 2022 will be reassessing the functionality and versatility of spaces. This year we have seen that the functionality of the home has shifted, with kitchens becoming home offices, living rooms turning into yoga studios and bathrooms becoming a private retreat away from the stresses of daily life. “On a global level, the pandemic has seen most of us spend more time than ever in our homes and that phenomenon is set to continue,” says Neale Whitaker, interior design expert and Luxaflex National Brand Partner.
“There will inevitably be a renewed focus on home offices, second living spaces, dining areas and home theatres. “From an aesthetic perspective, we will see a continued emphasis on what is known as biophilic design – seeking ways to bring nature indoors. “At its simplest biophilic design is our love of houseplants, but at its most sophisticated, it explores the relationship between indoors and outdoors and the creation of outdoor rooms which is especially important here in Australia,” says Neale. “This concept is also reflected in the current predominance of natural colours like greens, browns, ochre and natural materials like wood and stone.”
GRAND HOMES
UR APPRECIATION for homes that offer a true getaway has never been more prevalent. A higher value has been assigned to experiencing the beauty of nature and a sense of freedom in our every day. In the home this means creating a sanctuary where constraints feel as if they just fall away. Gold Coast-based SeaBreeze Design & Construct work closely with their clients to design, build and finish homes that promote freedom, space and independence. “Whilst luxury means different things to different people, what we’re seeing is a more evolved take on luxury based on the belief that less is more; less maintenance, less clutter, less noise, and less stress,” says SeaBreeze building designer Renee Ellen. “Freedom and private views of natural beauty have never been more keenly in focus. “A home that is a habitable piece of art and set up to independently operate creates this sense of retreat that rejuvenates us from our daily grind.” SeaBreeze’s recent project – the extraordinary Jabiru House in Mudgeeraba – provides an excellent case study in independent luxury living. Set within the hinterland haven of Jabiru Estate, the 12-month project saw a bare horse paddock transformed into a modern masterpiece that integrates seamlessly within a constructed native landscape. SeaBreeze harnessed its talented team of designers, builders, landscapers and engineers to carry the project from design through to earthworks, construction, landscaping, custom furniture and interior fit-out – right down to the brass cutlery. Inspired by Brazilian architecture, the design honours the Japanese ethos of wabi-sabi where natural handcrafted materials are embraced for their character and resilience. Rainwater tanks supply filtered water for drinking and cooking, a septic system recycles greywater for drought-tolerant gardens, and the 930m2 residence is powered by solar. “During the planning phase we were very much guided by the client’s level of excitement towards green technologies and where they sit on the spectrum of independence,” says Renée, who works alongside design builder Paul Lingard. “For some people, living independently is about privacy and getting away from it all, for some, it’s about sustainable living and having no power bill. “Others want to be water and food sufficient. Food may mean a food forest, chickens, a compost system and planning a herb garden around the corner from the kitchen. “It means thinking about sharing your space with fauna. Kids really love seeing the cycle of life and they grow up with less fear with this start to life.”
The priority for Jabiru House was to create a space in which a multigenerational family could fully retreat, whilst meeting their needs for space, work, nature and recreation. “Jabiru House was designed for a family with ages spanning 76 years and with the owner working a high-pressure job from home,” says Renée. “The home office is its own retreat, sound-insulated from the kid’s rumpus, and the mother can close off her self-sufficient wing behind a secret door.” SeaBreeze has found a niche designing and building in semi-rural and rural locales on the Gold Coast and in Northern NSW, where landscaping and built area are integral to one another. Their design work usually involves getting into finer details like cabinetry, handles, curtains and bespoke furnishings to ensure the character of the home is a complete expression. The focus required to achieve such a high degree of personalisation means that SeaBreeze only takes on one or two clients per year. “Discovering the crux of the client’s dream is critical,” says Renée. “When thinking of independence, some think of a large shed, or a modular system home, perhaps a treehouse. Some people, like in Jabiru House, want their castle. “The ability to live independently brings many levels of peace of mind and this can now be achieved with tremendous style. “Being away from it all and self-sufficient is a wonderful freedom and living off-the-grid is no longer austere. It’s a wonderful sense of peace to retreat into. “It’s very much about creating freedom, independence and resilience in the emotional wellbeing of the people who live there. “There’s a wonderful healing in that.”

HEN YOU WALK into a room designed by Lux Luxury Lifestyles, you may not realise it … at first. There is no recognisable trend that dominates the spaces they create. Design choices aren’t repeated from one project to the next. And that’s just how experienced designer Sue Robbie and her team of professionals like it. Those who spend more time within a Lux Luxury Lifestyles designed space will start to uncover the brand’s signature – uniqueness. The quality of their designs lies in their client-led style choices, which centres on using bespoke, natural and timeless pieces to help bring an individual’s vision to life. A born creative, Sue brings decades of industry experience to Lux Luxury Lifestyles, with a design portfolio that includes multimillion-dollar residential properties, national commercial brands, luxurious superyachts, even a deluxe equine coach. “We work very closely with our clients to get a real understanding of their personality, their style and the image and feeling they want to present in their spaces, so we can truly capture and reflect those in our design,” says Sue. “Having our own product ranges, including specialising in the manufacturing of window treatments and customised furniture designs, allows us to create without limits. “If our client can dream it, we can create it to suit any sized space. “While we generally focus on using natural elements in our designs, like linen textiles, warm woods and metal sculptural elements, we also like to play up and amplify the individual style of each client with what we call a ‘chill room’ where we can have a bit of fun with the design.” The Lux Luxury Lifestyles showroom in Bundall exemplifies the strength in their design, with many one-of-a-kind pieces, including the Interior Box Furniture Collection, which perfectly blends natural nude teaks with durable linen upholstery. There are also stunning sculptures, copper floor lamps and supersized aluminium wall mirrors. Perhaps the most eye-catching are the unique chandeliers the brand specialises in, which can be specifically designed and manufactured to fit and enhance any space.
“When designing a large space, there are often opportunities to create interest in open spaces, like high ceilings and void spaces, which is where our Special Pieces and chandeliers come into their own,” explains Sue. “We’ve also developed high-quality linen products through Natural Fibre Textiles, which we use in our window treatments and soft furnishings, like our Zig n Dot bedding collection. “We describe it as haute couture for your bed; it’s fully Australian-made and created to suit each project. “Our Bundall studio is a textile library, we have an incredible range of textiles and wallpapers, from embroidered fabrics to touchable velvet, weighted linens suitable for upholstery to on-trend designs light enough for clothing. “The studio is an experience in itself,” Sue adds. “I encourage anyone thinking about creating a new space or reinvigorating an existing space to visit our displays and speak to our team directly.”

OOD, MARBLE & WHITE, your leading Gold Coast based kitchen design and creation company, are a powerhouse of talent, and an excellent example of how collaboration creates synergy and quality in their designs and creations. Leighton, Wood, Marble & White’s owner, has been in the industry for almost 30 years, which has ensured he has developed an in-depth knowledge of carpentry, joinery, and the full manufacturing process. This practical knowledge, along with his passion and creative flair, ensures that his work is not only beautiful but the attention to detail is second to none. Leighton has an amazing gift; to see and create a space that is truly beautiful and functional. His amazing kitchens and cabinetry designs have won numerous Building Industry Awards and in 2020 he was awarded the HIA Kitchen Design of the Year – Gold Coast & Northern Rivers. With an exceptional flair for design, new team member Colin loves creating kitchen and cabinetry works of art that have functionality at their core. Colin’s drawing and detailing is impeccable, and his clients are exceptionally well looked after, benefitting from the wealth of knowledge and experience he brings to the table. “I’ve always enjoyed design, architecture and art,” Colin says. “Today’s kitchens are no longer just a standard working space within the home, they are an extension of the architecture, which ties the kitchen to the home and also tells a story about the client themselves.” Chloe is Wood, Marble & White’s most recent superstar. She began her design career overseas and as a result, she brings European inspiration and design knowledge to her creations. “When I was travelling through London on my gap year, I fell into a job in a high-end German kitchen showroom and was absolutely in awe of the designers,” she explains. “Once I saw what they were doing, I knew that this was what I wanted for my career. Rounding out the design team is Yana; she has worked as a designer for close to five years. “I have always been intrigued by design because, through design, you can explore and express a variety of different outcomes in the same environment,” Yana says. “I like to explore all options and present the best creation in both layout and design to maximise the potential of the space. “I enjoy seeing the transformation, and the client’s satisfaction gives me a great feeling of pride and accomplishment.” Important as always, Roly the bulldog is at the showroom every day. Though she takes her role as company client liaison officer seriously, it will always be secondary to her naps. Needless to say, she is everyone’s favourite staff member. With a team this talented and dedicated, it is easy to see why Wood, Marble & White’s designs stand out from the rest.

Barbara and her team at Alkot Studio are behind some of the city’s standout retail precincts, including West End’s $1.1 billion Sekisui House development, West Village. There’s no one quite like Barbara in her industry. Charismatic and vivacious, her passion is immediately infectious. Knowledge like hers hasn’t been acquired overnight. Having lived in Australia for the majority of her life, Barbara has experienced the evolution of retail in the country. Her experience spans over 20 years, across a vast number of projects and developments, from large multi-use precincts to smallscale neighbourhood centres and everything in between. Established in 2015, Alkot Studio, formerly known as The Retail Designers, has gone from strength to strength under her leadership, flourishing into a multidisciplinary studio specialising in high-end residential, retail, and hospitality Interior Design, as well as Retail Design Management. Much of Barbara’s success comes from the long-standing and rich relationships she has cultivated with clients and landlords. She also has strong bonds with the Alkot Studio team, especially her wife Ana. The two met six years ago while Ana was living in Melbourne, with Barbara flying back and forth for a year before they eventually settled in Brisbane. Their shared passion for design sparked their love, and it has continued to blossom over the years, with the couple tying the knot in 2018. An architect, Ana worked for several high end design firms in Brazil and has become an invaluable member of Alkot Studio, bringing with her a wealth of technical knowledge that has transformed the design studio. The couple love to travel, often finding themselves wandering the streets and admiring the architecture and interior marvels of whichever city they’re in. This appreciation for different places and cultures has greatly benefited their work with Alkot Studio, allowing them to approach their design with fresh ideas and trends not yet seen in Australia. A life partner in all senses of the word, Ana has been an inspiring force in Barbara’s life, both personally and professionally. Their latest adventure is their most exciting one yet … the couple has just welcomed a beautiful baby boy into the world. With her natural knack for adaptability and resilience, there’s no doubt, Barbara, alongside Ana, will take motherhood in her stride.

WINE CELLAR
A MYSTICAL BENT
Amphora wines – like the ones being created at Bent Road – have a charm and depth of flavour that defies their simple beginnings. WORDS TONY HARPER ROBERT RICHTER AND GLEN ROBERT make a compelling partnership. Not solely because of the duality of Robert (that’s just a bit of fun), but because they are so different, and yet so perfectly suited. Robert Richter is quiet … almost taciturn, but generous with his time; reserved, owlishly-wise, an old-style professor who is not yet old. Glen Robert is unstoppable, gregarious, filled with boundless energy, a wine-making-labrador in man’s clothing. They are both wonders and together they have created Bent Road Wines and a brethren label called La Petit Mort. Robert farms the land; Glen heads the winemaking. Their vineyard lies on Bent Road in Ballandean, Queensland, south of Stanthorpe, and not far shy of the New South Wales border. The Severn River runs through their property; it is home to cod, a watering hole for deer, wallabies and countless other fauna, and breathtakingly beautiful. The vineyard seems almost too organised, too civilised to belong. Yet it does, and it sits comfortably, almost seamlessly, amid the rocks, trees, watercourse and scrubby wilderness. Recently an old wooden church has been added to the house and winery sheds, to act as a tasting room. Due east of the house, by 30 or so steps, is the amphora garden. Round, ceremonial, almost religious. More so, perhaps, than the old church. It’s kind of like a miniaturised Stonehenge, inverted and buried. But instead of giant, vaguely rectangular boulders, we have large, Romanesque ceramic pots. Underground. Full of fermenting wine. And I reckon when it comes to wines made in amphora, there is a mystical element. A dimension we don’t yet have our heads around. It’s a process borrowed from ancient Georgian winemaking – before refrigeration, oak barrels, stainless steel, pumps, pipes, presses; six centuries before Jesus did his trick with water. And it is the simplest form of winemaking: put the grapes in the amphora, close the lid, and dig it up a year or so later. Bingo … grapes into wine. The earth acts as insulation, slowing the fermentation and the curves of the amphora encourage convection – no cold pockets and constant mixing of skins, seeds and liquid. There is science that explains much of the mysticism … just not fully. An amphora wine has an individuality, a peculiarity to it that can’t be gained from barrel, tank or bin. Compared to conventionally made wines it is the whites that are most disparate … but you can lay much of the blame for that on the skins; we are conditioned to know whites as bright, fresh, fruity, little or no tannin, almost clear.
60 covemagazine.com.au
– Issue 89
If you ferment white grapes as you would red – skins, pips, maybe even stalks included – you end up with an entirely different beast. The colour is deeper, they have tannin, and there’s an added dimension to the flavour … sometimes good, but often not. La Petite Mort does two amphora whites – Gentil (a blend of Muscat and Gewurztraminer) and V.M.R. (Viognier, Marsanne Roussanne), and they both sit emphatically on the good side of the flavour fence. Gentil is pretty; smelling kind of like ripe green grapes, but overlaid with the potpourri aromas of Gewurz. What could be too much, too perfumed (like car air freshener) is beautifully reined in by the production method. The skins have given the wine plenty of tension, and some raspy notes – not quite bitter, but heading that way – and that makes a perfect counterbalance to the inherently overt nature of the two varieties. In short, it works. V.M.R. is less gregarious, more structural and I reckon more serious. I love it. It’s the texture that reels me in; multi-layered, silky but also a little spiky; dense like a South Australian red, but imbued with the brightness and lightness of white wine. It’s complex, in a soft, encompassing way. Of the amphora-fermented reds it the Saperavi that holds pride of place. And that’s quite poetic in a way, given that Saperavi is a Georgian variety and it’s nice to think that perhaps, two and a half thousand years ago, there was Saperavi being painstakingly crafted into wine in the Georgian soils. It is a bold variety, with deep – sometimes impenetrable – colour, voluminous tannins and rich fruit. It shouts rather than whispers. Fermenting in amphora seems to quell its loud nature a little, giving it a layer of fat over the sinew, adding savoury elements to its very punchy fruit. When Robert and Glen get this right, which they seem to do most years, it is probably the best Saperavi in the country. And while you might think that’s a hollow accolade because it’s such a scarce variety, I reckon there are more than 50 people producing it in Australia and that number keeps on growing. The other amphora red is made from Shiraz with a dollop of Viognier. In some vintages this has had a little funk on the side: I don’t like funk but so many people do … which is simply a matter of preference. When it shoots straight – funkless – it is a very compelling red with an almost velour/satin texture and a wonderful melange of purple fruits, a hint of perfume, and an interplay between savoury and succulent. There is so much more being produced at Bent Road, but space and time don’t allow me to explore them all. Some are far more conventional – Chardonnay, Shiraz, an always brilliant Tempranillo – and others stray from convention; Marsanne made both conventionally and under flor (like Vin Jaune or Fino sherry), Verdelho made like Madeira. It is a property and a team of people that continue to experiment, push boundaries and dabble, at times, in the most extreme, interesting styles of wine. For me, however, it is the stuff from the amphora garden that defines these wonderful people and their beautiful property. Issue 89 – covemagazine.com.au

Market Holds Early Momentum The Gold Coast prestige property market is off to a positive start in 2022 with ongoing demand driving steady growth across all sectors.
T
he first couple of months in any new year provide something of a barometer for what’s to come. Following a year of record property price growth on the Gold Coast, just how much momentum carries through into this year has been the subject of much speculation. While the rate of price growth may have peaked, locally we continue to see exceptional demand across the residential, commercial, new project and executive leasing sectors. Regional residential markets outperformed capital cities over the past year and that trend continued in January when open borders enabled those southerners with sea or tree change plans to make their move. Housing values in regional Queensland grew by 2% in January, compared with an
215-217 Jefferson Lane, Palm Beach
0.8% rise across the combined capital cities over the same month. In the year to January, Gold Coast housing values recorded 36.3% growth – the second highest regional rate of growth Australia-wide. Further south, the Byron Shire had the highest median house value of any regional LGA at $1,838,286 (up 30.2% year on year). Houses on the Gold Coast have also been among the fastest to sell, averaging just 16 days on the market, according to CoreLogic’s year-to-date data. Limited supply is likely to be a consistent theme in 2022 with many property homeowners - particularly those sitting on blue chip assets - simply not willing to sell.
Kollosche has an increasing line of cashedup buyers eager to get into the market, but even unconditional offers well above market value are not enough to entice. It’s not surprising then that those premium properties that do come to market are attracting an impressive volume of enquiry via our social media channels, digital and print marketing. Solid enquiry is coming through on a rare site at 215-217 Jefferson Lane, Palm Beach which is jointly listed by Kollosche Commercial’s Adam Grbcic and Tony Grbcic, and residential agent Troy Dowker. The rare 817.4m2 double block fronts the sand and surf on a corner position with dual street frontage to prestigious Jefferson Lane and Thirteenth Avenue with approval in place for a nine-storey tower plus pool and basement parking.

31 Beaconsfield Drive, Burleigh Waters
This prime site was scheduled for auction on-site on Friday, 4 March at 3pm. A fully rendered residence at 31 Beaconsfield Drive, Burleigh Waters has been the subject of widespread intrigue and interest since it launched in mid-February. Marketed by Eoghan Murphy and myself, the one-of-a-kind creation features arched entries and soaring curved ceilings finished entirely in Venetian plaster and textured render. Having featured on realestate.com.au, The Gold Coast Bulletin and Channel 9 news, that auction is shaping up to be eventful on Sunday, 13 March at 11am.
NEW APARTMENTS AND PREMIUM RENTALS It’s not just the residential housing market that’s hit the ground running in 2022. The prestige property rental sector remains tight, with Kollosche’s Executive Leasing team reporting premium pricing for properties presented to a high standard in key locations. Kollosche recently achieved $920 per week for a two-bedroom apartment in Palm Beach while a $1,650 per week tenant signed on for a five-bedroom waterfront residence in Sorrento. Apartment stock is sliding off the plan at Aspire on Garfield Terrace, Surfers Paradise where Kollosche’s New Projects
Infinity, Broadbeach
team took Expressions of Interest on half of the stock within four weeks of the project’s late December launch. The team has also sold out Infinity Broadbeach, White Main Beach and stage one of 'The Lanes' Residences in Mermaid Waters where construction is now underway.
Now is the time to reach out for advice on the value of your asset, particularly those whose expectations have not been met elsewhere. We are seeing enough buyer depth in our database to achieve premium results for properties that are presented, positioned and priced correctly.
January and February results reflect a level of confidence that puts the Gold Coast property market in a positive position as 2022 unfolds. Comparative affordability, ongoing migration trends, low stock levels and a lust for lifestyle continue to fuel demand and steady price growth. As we move through March, Kollosche invites homeowners to take advantage of the current momentum in the market.

Clean lines and contemporary finishes give the house a modern edge while dedicated zones in which to relax or gather with guests creates an inviting charm. “We wanted a really functional home – that was the biggest thing,” says Angela. “Plus, we wanted to let the winter sun in and keep the summer sun out. “Entertaining was important too so we used materials that required limited maintenance so we could just enjoy being here.” And when the mood shifts into party mode the recreation room – a self-contained entertaining pavilion – is the ultimate destination, with a full bar, kitchen, bathroom and deck. Guests can also enjoy woodfire pizza from a quaint garden courtyard or serve up teppanyaki in the expansive all-weather alfresco terrace. A TASTE OF GWINGANNA “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” – Hippocrates. WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY MARJ OSBORNE “THE BEAUTY OF food as medicine is that the choice to heal and promote health can begin as soon as the next meal.” – foodasspirit.com The concept of food as medicine is not new. Good nutrition is one of the pillars of health, along with good sleep, managing stress, and exercise. These foundations of a healthy lifestyle form the core of the Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat, a well-appointed property perched high up on a hilltop above Tallebudgera Valley. Set on 500 acres of semi-tropical bushland, Gwinganna’s ‘village’ of restored heritage buildings is surrounded by lush, beautifully maintained gardens and orchards. The largest health retreat in Australasia, its programs include yoga, Pilates, bushwalking, stretch classes, guided relaxation, meditation, boxing, health seminars and Qi Gong. However, after all this activity, where would we be without nourishment? Recognising that good nutrition has outcomes for both physical and mental wellbeing, food has always been a highlight of a stay at Gwinganna. There is a strong focus on seasonal, local, organic wholefoods with much of the produce harvested daily from their extensive onsite

gardens and orchard, maintained by Shelley Pryor, an organic gardener and former chef. Following Gwinganna’s wholistic food philosophy, each of their chefs has worked with the retreat’s nutritionist to present meals that are both healthy and balanced, pointing the way for guests to make dietary changes upon their return home. Mid-2021, Gwinganna appointed Danè Chatani as their Executive Chef and Culinary Nutritionist. Trained as a Le Cordon Bleu chef, Danè gained qualifications in clinical nutrition in 2018, bringing to the Gwinganna table the amazingly powerful combination of these two areas of expertise. Danè’s resumé includes roles as Head Health Chef to the Royal Family of Saudi Arabia and Consultant Head Health Chef at Solar Springs Health Retreat. She also founded The Nutritional Chef catering and consultation business as well as a food business. What Danè adds to the mix is ‘Food Synergy’, ways to maximise healing by bringing foods together. As we chat, I realise that it’s the knowledge of which combinations of food should be used together so that the body can maximise the absorption of nutrients that fascinates me.
For example, black pepper increases the absorption of turmeric and curcumin by up to 2,000 per cent, while lemon juice helps extract the calcium from broccoli. Although this concept is thousands of years old, it’s a knowledge bank that we rarely tap into when preparing our food, let alone when we dine at a restaurant. While the Mediterranean diet contains many food synergies, it’s clear that a number of tried and true combinations, such as dressing a salad with oil and vinegar, are in fact examples of food synergy that many of us are unaware of. Spinach and other leafy greens are a good source of iron, but they are a non-heme form of iron not easily absorbed without lemon juice. Vitamins A, D, E, and K are all fat-soluble – that means they will be optimally absorbed when paired with a fat. Salad is full of these nutrients, but you will not absorb them unless you have avocado, olive oil or nuts in the salad. First and foremost, Danè believes that cooking with fresh produce prepared with care and love is not only an essential ingredient for health and wellbeing, but also a healing tool.
SANCTUARY COVE MARINE VILLAGE
“Retreat guests come to Gwinganna to find preventative holistic solutions they can take home and put into practice,” Danè tells me. “I love connecting with our guests, whether interacting in the dining room or via the new Food Synergy cooking demonstrations. “My aim is then to share valuable healthy options for them, to help address a variety of health conditions.” The food we are served at Gwinganna is not only delicious, but also contains exciting combinations of organic food, much of the produce grown in the garden with the additional asset of being synergy-focussed. Although it’s not overtly stated at each meal, there’s a lot of planned synergy on each plate. Greens are served with eggs to maximise the absorption of Vitamin D, K2 and calcium, which are all fat-soluble. Confit duck has been slow-cooked to break down the proteins, then served with beetroot marmalade to widen the blood vessels to aid nutrient absorption. Gluten and dairy-free, with a vegetarian option for each meal (with vegan and other dietary requirements provided by special request), the menu aims to help support and improve digestion and liver detoxification, reduce inflammation, improve gut bacteria and balance blood sugar levels. Not only that, but meals are beautifully presented and taste great. Having cooked and created delicious healthy menus for royalty, heads of state, corporations and celebrities, Danè believes the key to healthy eating is using fresh local ingredients, portion control, the absence of additives or chemicals but, above all else, taste. Her philosophy is simple: Healthy food should be enjoyable food. “Coming to Gwinganna has been a journey where all my previous roads have led me,” Danè says. “It is here that I can truly embrace the passions that drive me: nutritional medicine, beautiful dining and hospitality.” Issue 89 – covemagazine.com.au

DINING VISIONARIES Three incredible new chefs bring a fresh perspective to dining at Emporium Hotel South Bank.
WHAT’S BETTER THAN HAVING one new chef to add to the accomplished team at Emporium Hotel South Bank? Having three new chefs that will bring the culinary experience at the hotel to new heights in 2022. With dozens of global accolades, awards and experience between them, the trio includes Executive Chef Owen Ealden, Executive Sous Chef James Gallagher and Pastry Chef Charith Ponnamperuma Arachchige. With three decades spent working at luxury hotels world-wide, Owen Ealdon will take the helm as Executive Chef of the property. Owen began his career in Kent in the UK including stints at the London Marriott, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and running his own corporate catering company. Having spent time in various hotels and resorts in Cairns, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and the Maldives (where one of his restaurants was 5.8 metres below the sea), Owen is now back in Australia and calling Emporium Hotel South Bank his home. Joining Owen is multi award winning chef, James Gallagher.
68 covemagazine.com.au
– Issue 89
James started his career in London and has worked for some of the most refined names in hotel dining during his 16 years in the industry. He was tipped for great things from early on in his career, winning the Accor UK and Ireland Apprentice of the Year and Accor European Apprentice of the Year Runner Up. James opened his first solo venture, Allium Restaurant and Bar, in New Farm with his wife in 2016 where his brand of modern Australian cuisine drew national acclaim. The restaurant was awarded 3 Chef’s Hats by Gault & Millau in 2019, 4 stars by John Lethlean in The Australian in 2017 and named one of Australia’s Hot 50 Restaurants by that publication in the same year. As the new Executive Sous Chef at Emporium Hotel South Bank, James will lead the team in Signature Restaurant, tapping into his experience in London and at some of Brisbane’s top venues to create a truly special gastronomic experience for lovers of fine food in Queensland. Rounding out the team as new Head Pastry Chef is Charith Ponnamperuma Arachchige.
With 15 years experience gained at some of the world’s most luxurious properties, Charith began his career at The Palm Hotel in his home country of Sri Lanka. The globe-trotting pastry chef, who specialises in pastry and chocolate, moved to Australia in 2017. Since 2020, he was the Head Pastry Chef at Voyages Sails in the Desert at Uluru before taking up his new position at Emporium Hotel South Bank, Brisbane. Emporium Hotel South Bank General Manager, John McILwain, said adding these three impressive new talents to the expert line-up at Emporium Hotel is an exciting development for diners to the hotel. “We have a lot planned for 2022 across our beautiful restaurant spaces Signature, the Terrace, Belle Epoque and our upcoming new wine bar,” he said. “Our new chefs, with their worlds of experience and expertise, will play a big role in bringing our vision to life.”

Restauranteurs Max and Amanda Alfieri founded Ioesco in 2008, and will stay on as managers. “It has been a labour of love and a privilege to serve Sanctuary Cove locals and the greater Gold Coast community,” said Max. “Ioseco is a traditional Italian family restaurant serving my original recipes, cooked with passion and the freshest ingredients. That is a tradition that will continue, with the support of Mulpha and the Bimbadgen wine team.”

WELL TRAVELLED
ROAD TRIPPING Many of us plan to travel big, far and wide in Australia in 2022.
RECENT RESEARCH by leading van-sharing platform Camplify reveals many Australians intend to travel for longer periods – and further across the country – this year. Most will self-drive, and many aspire to be on the road for multiple weeks or even months. Their key motivations for road trip travel are to feel free, reconnect with people and nature, and spend time in Australia’s most iconic places. Camplify has identified six key trends shaping how people will travel in 2022.
Priority road trip activities include: • Visiting and watching the sunset at Uluru - 55% • Driving down the Great Ocean Road - 45% • Exploring outback Australia - 38% • Hiking Cradle Mountain - 27% • Swimming with whale sharks in Exmouth - 26% • Enjoying snow sports in the Snowy Mountains - 23% • Spotting penguins on Phillip Island - 24% • Snapping a selfie with a Quokka - 22% • Seeing a Koala in the wild - 20% • Sightseeing with crocodiles - 21%
1. Aussies plan to travel further, do more and stay longer. Aussies will embrace road trip getaways throughout 2022, with their ‘must-dos’ including visits to iconic destinations and quintessentially Australian experiences. As such, travel aspirations are as big and diverse as the country itself. According to the company’s research, 54% of respondents said they would like to travel in a van for around two months or more in 2022, allowing enough time to see more of Australia and explore bucket list destinations.
2. Non-static, self-drive holidays offer people the freedom they’ve been craving. Revealing why people want to road trip travel in Australia in 2022, Camplify’s research showed the priority motivations include: the freedom of having no set plan (63%); spending quality time with family (43%) and friends (20%); getting to know ‘the real’ Australia (15%), meeting new people (31%), eating local (39%) and spending time in local communities/supporting local businesses (20%). Other factors include respecting Australia’s indigenous heritage, natural places and wildlife

(33%), learning more about Australia’s culture and history (29%) and outdoor activities such as swimming (24%) and hiking (26%). Self-drive motorhomes offer the ultimate freedom, as well as the ability to pivot between places quickly. They also offer a simple solution for fast and easy road tripping. 3. Van life transitions to van lifestyle. Van stays now represent approximately 20% of tourism nights in Australia, with around a quarter of people intending to experience ‘van life’ for the first time in 2022. Being outdoors isn’t just a holiday anymore, it has become a lifestyle choice for many as people shake off old travel habits and try new things. The key signals of redefined caravan and camping in 2022 include: Aussies looking to incorporate a luxe lifestyle into their travel. Many are opting for RVs that include onboard bathrooms, making van stays ‘apartments on wheels’.
6. Travel at arm’s length. Socially distanced outdoor road trips enable people to travel with confidence, despite COVID-19 challenges. With RVs providing a mostly or totally self-contained option for travellers, van-hire continues to be a popular domestic choice as people consider their personal safety and wellbeing coupled with a growing appetite for freedom, outdoor adventures and a desire to reconnect with nature and explore more of Australia. New off-grid stay opportunities are also opening up. Delivering on social distancing during anxious times, Hipcamp offers private property campsites. The company tripled their available off-grid locations – and their host numbers doubled year on year in 2021 – as property owners found ways to diversify their income and ‘open the paddock gate’ to motorhomes and caravans. As Australians begin to embrace the ‘new normal’, travel remains an integral part of our lifestyle. Self-contained RVs give Aussies the freedom to create their own memorable, slow-paced travel to Australia’s bucket list experiences and iconic places while also enjoying the flexibility caravanning provides. 5. Young people are challenging stereotypes. The caravan and camping experience is being redefined by ‘play nomads’ as more young people own, list and hire vans than ever before. Challenging traditional grey-nomad van-ownership stereotypes, this growing trend of younger owners and hirers is re-energising and redefining caravan and camping as we know it. Horizon FD75 Open Flybridge
“We have seen the increased popularity of boating as a fun and safe lifestyle activity with wide appeal and the subsequent upward trend in boat ownership in Australia,” Johan says. Australian Marine Centre (AMC) Boats Dealer Principal Rod Elliott affirms this trend, saying the marine and leisure boat specialist has seen a huge surge in demand with production for many brands sold out for 2022 and into 2023. “We will have the best brands on display at SCIBS 2022, including the Australian release of the Invincible 33ft catamaran as well as a range of Bar Crusher, Haines Signature, Aquamaster, Contender, Tidewater and Ranieri boats,” Rod says. JSW Powersports will also showcase industryleading brands such as Sea-Doo Watercraft, Can-Am Off-Road and On-Road ranges, Sea Fox Boats, Malibu Boats and Axis Boats and their latest brand addition, SEA-BOB-Jets. In the luxury category, Horizon Yacht Australia achieved record sales of $150M in new models last year with production booked out until early 2023 due to the popularity of the Horizon FD series.
“Horizon will display three brand-new FD models at SCIBS 2022: Horizon FD75 Open Flybridge, a four-stateroom yacht; Horizon FD80 Skyline stock boat and the Horizon FD90 Skyline, which is fast becoming one of the world’s most sought-after mid-range motor yachts,” Horizon Yacht Australia’s Managing Director Mark Western says. Riviera Owner Rodney Longhurst says the luxury brand will bring its largest Australian showcase of 12 distinctive motor yachts to Sanctuary Cove, including the boat show premiere of the exceptional new Riviera 78 Motor Yacht and two new models that are yet to be officially announced. Palm Beach will also be back at SCIBS where CEO Mark Richards says attendees can view the sleek Palm Beach GT60 cruiser, game-changing Grand Banks 60 model and other premium, motor yachts in the award-winning range. "SCIBS 2022 is an unmissable event," says Johan. “We are excited to welcome new and returning exhibitors and visitors to enjoy the very best the marine lifestyle has to offer in the stunning surrounds of Sanctuary Cove.”

PICK-UP
YOUR GAME What happened to the humble Aussie ‘ute’? WORDS CHRIS NIXON
76 covemagazine.com.au
– Issue 89
THE AMERICANISATION OF AUSTRALIAN language has reached the motoring world. Utes are now pick-ups, according to the marketers, and in sync with the switch to an American description the vehicles themselves have transformed from carbased carry-alls and light commercials into behemoths that loom over ordinary traffic. Biggest of all pick-ups are the American-built vehicles that have landed in Australia in the recent past. As the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux are the most popular new vehicles here, the Americans are kings of the road back home. The RAM has led the charge in Australia, built by the Chrysler group and converted to right-hand drive by a Melbourne company that has its origins in the nowdefunct Holden Special Vehicles operation. Produced in suf f icient number s to s tock dealerships around the country, it’s the most visible of the Yankee trucks. The latest RAM 1500 model is daunting in its size, so the first thing a prospective buyer must consider is whether it will fit in the driveway or garage. It’s 5.9 metres long, 2.5 metres wide and 2.0 metres high … and it weighs 2.75 tonnes. Owners of big caravans, car trailers, boats and horse floats choose it because it is rated to tow 4.5 tonnes, a useful one tonne more than the usual utes/pick-ups and heavy SUVs. ‘Basic’ RAMs suited for farm or trade work are available from $79,950 (recommended retail, plus onroads), but we’re driving the all-new, top-of-the-line 1500 Limited crew-cab, priced at $139,950. It sounds pricey until you check the most expensive new Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series model (around $137,000) and then review the specifications. It’s not possible here to compare the RAM and Toyota item-by-item, but let’s say the RAM shopper might be impressed. This pick-up is specced like a Cadillac with a tray-back. With the Limited’s huge 22-inch wheels, entry to the RAM cabin requires a climb. Thankfully, full-length steps drop down as the door is opened and make the ascent easy. It’s vast and luxurious inside, as you might expect in an American vehicle. The leather front seats are like armchairs, there’s every imaginable comfort and convenience feature and a sense of being high above the other traffic. It’s practical too, with enough bins and lockers to stow a Confederate armoury. Out back, the cargo tub is 1.7 metres long.
The tailgate looks as big as a single bed, but it’s power-assisted and there’s a drop-down step if you need to climb in. A hard tonneau folds back in three sections and there’s a clever barrier that can be locked in at any point across the load bed to stop cargo sliding around. The so-called RamBox features 210-litre lidded, lockable bins on each side of the cargo tub. Accessible from the side of the vehicle, they provide convenient storage for smaller items without having to go into the main cargo area. You get the picture with this vehicle: useful features everywhere. Other items that capture interest include: adjustablereach pedals, 360-degree cameras, a Harmon Kardon audio system, self-parking, tyre pressure monitors, a wireless phone charging pad, LED lighting of the cargo bed, a 230 Volt AC power output and automatic grille shutters to control airflow and engine temperature. The list of standard items is simply enormous. The only thing I couldn’t find listed was any airbags for the rear passenger compartment, a disappointing omission. Driving the RAM 1500 is surprisingly easy, although one is never able to forget completely the amount of road space it occupies. Parking requires planning to find big-enough spots and high-enough ceilings. Under the bonnet is Chrysler’s petrol Hemi V8 engine. It’s 5.7 litres and pumps out 291 kiloWatts of power and 556 Newtonmetres of torque, delivered through an eight-speed, dual-range automatic gearbox to fulltime all-wheel drive. Under a light throttle the engine can shut down four cylinders and run on the remaining four and there’s an auxiliary 48-Volt hybrid system that enables automatic engine start/stop, short-burst extra power and braking energy regeneration. These features help hold petrol consumption on the official test down to 12.2 litres per 100 kms, although real-world driving is likely to be thirstier. Suspension is by airbags instead of springs. These can raise or lower the body height and ensure a comfortable ride on choppy roads. I was sceptical at first about the merit of such a big vehicle, but it’s a case of horses for courses. For massive towing power, off-road ability and superb comfort on long trips, not much else fits the bill and especially not for the price. Pick-ups are now the new utes.

WHEELS & WATER
FROM TOYOTA WITH LOVE Mr Toyoda … the man behind the make. WORDS CHRIS NIXON IT’S TRUE THAT most cars are basically all the same these days. Any driver should be able to master almost any make or model within a few kilometres. So what makes the difference between like and dislike? It’s primarily, experience: how the car feels to drive and what it’s like to own. I n this we expect distinction from expensive makes, but what about the mass-produced, socalled whitegoods-on-wheels? Perhaps no brand epitomises rolling whitegoods more than Toyota, the ultimate family workhorse, but it’s this company more than any rival that is focused on making ownership meaningful and aspirational. Yes, Toyota. Toyotas are renowned for reliability and durability. Few drivers would covet one for sheer pleasure, however, but that’s changing fast, from the top of the company down. The revolution is being led vigorously by Toyota’s 65-year-old President Akio Toyoda, great-grandson of the company founder. He’s a car nut, a capable race and rally driver, and convinced that making enjoyable vehicles is key to business success.
78 covemagazine.com.au
– Issue 89
So now Toyota competes in some of the biggest motorsport competitions, including the World Rally Championship, World Sportscar Endurance Championship, American NASCAR and the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans. With typical Japanese courtesy and humility, after every successful event Mr Toyoda personally thanks the drivers and teams and re-states the aim to improve everyday Toyotas through the challenges of motorsport. Toyota also uses racing success to highlight its trio of sporty road cars that ordinary drivers can own, the GR86 and Supra coupes and GR Yaris hatchback. Mr Toyoda involved himself in developing all three. The 86 and Yaris are popular with amateur competitors in Australia. Racing-led marketing is a common strategy with premium brands, especially Porsche, but no high-volume mainstream maker has tackled it as comprehensively as Toyota. The halo effect of Toyota’s ‘hero’ models enhances the entire model range too, so unsurprisingly it’s Australia’s most popular vehicle make and delivery waits for some models are up to two years.
The company communicates with depositholders to assure them their car is coming. But as buyers lose patience and used-Toyota demand soars, is it possible we’ll see here an innovation soon to be offered in Britain: the factory-refurbished Toyota? Far from getting a cosmetic detail and a dealership 20-point mechanical check before resale, selected Brit Toyotas will go back to the factory to double or even treble their lifecycles. That’s a great show of faith in its product. Even more important than keeping more Toyotas on British roads, the company’s aim is to extend the relationship with its customers. Younger family generations become the next Toyota owners. And so Toyota completes the circle of its relationship with customers and cements its position as the number one car maker in the world – 10.5 million sales in 2021 – and Australia. It’s a fascinating story that starts with the car nut behind the wheel and his (modified) name on the badge, Akio Toyoda.

A survey on 2022 Smart Home Technology reveals older Australians aged 55 to 65+ have embraced smart home devices and become more tech-savvy. But they’re not the only generation taking advantage, with kids as young as 5 also accessing smart devices. Savvy surveyed 1,000 Australians to see how they feel about using the Internet of Things (IoT) in the home. Some of the highlights include: • 48% of boomers and seniors already own one or more smart home devices. • Increased safety and security is a key motivator for adopting domestic smart home technology. • Only 14% of seniors 65+ feel they do not need or want to invest in the IoT. • Almost half of Australians are willing to spend over $1,500 on smart home devices.

THE MILLION-DOLLAR
MARK
The rise of millionaire rows in south-east Queensland.
WORDS NICK NICHOLS THE AUSTRALIAN PROPERTY market reached a notable milestone in 2021 with the average median house price for capital cities surging past the $1 million mark. It’s a figure that brings into focus the pace of growth in property prices over the past two years. The impressive statistic, revealed in the Domain Quarterly House Price Report, shouldn’t shock close observers of the market as booming house prices in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne, in that order, led the charge. These markets are now the country’s most expensive, and they are skewing the national average with median prices well above the magic million. They are followed, in descending order, by Brisbane, Hobart, Adelaide, Darwin and Perth, all of which are yet to breach the $1 million median.
82 covemagazine.com.au
– Issue 89
Brisbane is the closest with a Decemberquarter median of $792,065, up 25.7 per cent for the year. Perhaps a more pointed perspective on the pace of price growth can be found in CoreLogic’s growing list of Australian suburbs that have a median price of more than $1 million. In the seven months from May to December last year, 311 suburbs across the country joined the millionaires’ club. A quarter of them, or 77, were in the greater Sydney area, followed by Brisbane with 40 suburbs added to the list. The spike in Brisbane was supported by another 36 in regional areas such as Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. According to recent data, there are now 82 suburbs outside of Brisbane with a house
median price above $1 million, almost equaling the 91 currently in Brisbane. If anything, these figures reveal the extent of property wealth that is shifting to south-east Queensland. Forecasts for the year ahead are varied, with the consensus that price growth will continue in 2022, but at a more modest pace. Many analysts are now placing a caveat on their forecasts with expectations that the Reserve Bank of Australia is likely to move earlier than expected in lifting the official cash rate. Some analysts have forecast the RBA will increase the cash rate later this year, while others are confident the status quo will remain until 2023. Major banks have already started increasing fixed-rate loans, a trend many in the industry see continuing throughout the year.
CoreLogic’s research director Tim Lawless says a slowdown in property price growth is already occurring in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, but he sees the persistent strength in other areas leading to a two-speed housing market in Australia. “We could see our two biggest capital city markets Sydney and Melbourne hit their peak later this year, although the timing is highly uncertain and depends on a broad range of influences,” says Lawless. “The only broad regions avoiding a slowdown in the pace of growth in housing values are Brisbane, Adelaide and regional Queensland. “These regions show less of an affordability challenge relative to the larger capitals, as well as better support for housing demand with Queensland in particular showing strong interstate migration.”
Lending weight to buyer appetite for Queensland properties is the latest PropTrack Overseas Search Report produced by REA Group. The report, which tracks searches on realestate.com.au, found that the Gold Coast was the most sought-after location for buyers for a second year running. Brisbane came a close second, ahead of Sydney and Melbourne. More than half of the searches for Gold Coast properties were from New Zealanders. In fact, searches from Kiwis were up 37 per cent across the board in 2021 compared to the previous year, while property searches from Chinese nationals also saw a notable rebound – up 13 per cent. Despite the ongoing strength of demand, the dynamics of the property market have changed.
CoreLogic notes that the shortage of listings that previously created a sense of urgency among buyers is diminishing, with normalised stock levels in Sydney and Melbourne largely driving the slowdown in price growth. However, this turnaround is not reflected in all markets. It’s one of the reasons CoreLogic sees continued growth in markets such as Brisbane and Adelaide, where the advertised supply of properties remains about 35 per cent below the five-year average. Until that changes, these markets could remain in the millionaire hot seat for a little while longer.

2022 MARKET UPDATE WITH STEVE HUNT | MEDIAHUNT.COM.AU
SUPPLY & DEMAND
The Gold Coast apartment market continues to attract local and interstate interest. SOUTHEAST QUEENSLAND appears to be entering a new phase in the property cycle. While the prestige sector continues to shine with record sales – highlighted by a record $11 million plus off the plan penthouse sale for Brisbane in Azure Property Group’s luxury One Five Six Oxlade Drive – there has certainly been a slowdown in market activity, particularly the launch of new apartment projects. This is actually a good thing. What we have seen in the last couple of months is a more realistic release of new projects to the market – not the frenetic, fast paced, almost weekly release of new apartments flooding the marketplace. Rising construction costs impacting on the feasibility of developments has been the catalyst for a slowdown, as has the spectre of rising interest rates, a looming federal election and global uncertainty. Industry insiders say market demand from local downsizers for product close to the water and the beach is still very strong, and a slowdown in new supply will only prevent any oversupply issues that have created troubles in the past. According to Urbis in its latest available research, new apartment sales cracked an alltime high well before the year ended. The number of apartment sales for the September quarter surged to 690, bringing the
84 covemagazine.com.au
– Issue 89
total of new apartments sold on the Gold Coast in the first nine months of the year to 1,882. This figure has already eclipsed the previous full-year record of 1,556 sales in 2016. The apartment buying spree has also led to a record low supply of apartments, according to the Urbis Apartment Essentials report. Based on the September sales rate, only 2.2 months’ supply of new apartments remain available on the market should no new projects be released. This is the lowest supply level ever recorded by Urbis for the Gold Coast and is down from 4.2 months’ supply recorded in the June quarter. (Three major projects with more than 2000 apartments were released in the last quarter of 2021). “What we are seeing across our workbook is continued strong demand for premium apartments but an intensifying lack of supply in the middle market; new apartments in desirable locations that are priced between around $600,000 and $1,500,000,” says Matt Schneider, head of the Property Council of Australia’s Gold Coast branch. “The apar tment market has cer tainly stratified over the last few years with different opportunities and challenges now facing each of the market segments. “We have also seen the emergence and intensification of pressure on project feasibilities
because of the escalation in construction costs, and increasingly acute pressure on access to labour and materials. “Whilst those forces are creating challenges for some projects, it is encouraging that they are not the impact of a lack of demand or an oversupply of product but rather on other elements of project feasibilities. “Should those forces result in some of the projects approved across the city over the last few years not being constructed, we expect to see a further strengthening of the market fundamental on the supply side into 2023.” This view is supported by two of the Gold Coast’s most active project marketers – who have been behind some of the city’s best performing apartment projects. Jayde Pezet and Todd Matheson, who have re-branded their KM Sales and Marketing (KMSM) to Pezet Matheson, say market forces delaying some projects will continue to drive the market to new heights. “There has been a lot of industry talk about the impacts of rising costs and supply chain issues, but we are seeing the continuation of a very strong downsizer market similar to what we saw in 2021,” said Jayde. “If there are issues that delay new projects coming to market, we believe this is only going

to create a situation where there is less stock on the market and therefore more demand. “2021 was a watershed year for the city and we are well and truly anticipating this momentum to accelerate into 2022,” he said. “With interstate and international borders now open and lockdowns behind us, the Gold Coast property market will begin to transition into a new phase driven predominantly by southern buyers or local downsizers who want the appeal of coastal living. “Despite the boom we’ve witnessed in recent years, the city remains considerably undervalued compared to the likes of Melbourne and Sydney.” Both Pezet and Matheson have witnessed the highs and the lows of the city’s economy, having sat at the helm of the property marketing landscape through the GFC and its subsequent rebound in recent years. The opening of international borders is also likely to give the sector a shot in the arm, with foreigners and expats expected to continue to drive demand for property over the coming year. Another factor driving the Gold Coast economy is the number of large institutional investors who spent 2021 buying sites. Colliers Gold Coast recorded the biggest year in its history, with more than $2 billion in commercial transactions.

The result is almost double the average transaction total recorded annually for each of the past five years. Colliers Director in Charge Steven King also says the office vacancy rates of approximately 10 per cent are around the healthiest in Australia, driven by businesses wanting to operate from the Gold Coast rather than the major capital cities. “After a strong 2021, we anticipate the Gold Coast office market to maintain its momentum throughout this year with a possible further tightening of the city’s overall office vacancy due to the modest construction pipeline,” said Mr King. A number of new projects have or are about to enter the market. The southern Gold Coast is certainly one of the most active areas for luxury beach apartments, and Marquee Development Partners is set to embark on its 10th Gold Coast project in four years as it cements its position as one of the premium ‘downsizer’ developers. Marquee is set to launch ‘Monterey’ at Kirra – its second project in the southern enclave which is undergoing a major transformation. Joining the southern resurgence is Melbournebased heavy hitter BeckDev’s $130 million ‘Palais’, which is currently before council. Paul Gedoun, head of S&S Projects, has carved out his own reputation as the renaissance man of
Rainbow Bay, nearing his third sell out in as many years following the success of Flow Residences, Awaken and Esprit. On the central Gold Coast, Gallery Group has launched a stunning new residential collection, touted as one of the most spacious apartment offerings on the coast in recent years, with an average apartment size exceeding the average sized Australian home. Iris Capital’s V&A project at Broadbeach continues to be the premium central Gold Coast offering and has been well taken up by both local and interstate buyers wanting a slice of luxury in the cosmopolitan heart of the city. Macquarie York has claimed Chevron Island as its own as the suburb undergoes a transformation driven by the emergence of the Home of the Arts (HOTA) precinct, with more than 20 sales in less than eight weeks on its Nina apartments. This follows on from the success of its Allure project which is all but sold out. Fur ther nor th, Aniko Group’s George Mastrocostas has become synonymous with the epic Hope Island transformation, celebrating a third sell-out with his Athena project. We certainly see another positive year ahead for the region.

BROADWATER LIVING REIMAGINED Beautiful in name and nature, Belvue will set a new standard in waterfront living.
IN THE NORTH of the Gold Coast lies a coastal suburb pulsing with untapped potential. With its absolute Broadwater frontage meandering canal systems and tree-lined coastal parks, Runaway Bay has always been a secret mecca for those looking to live in laid back luxury. And with millions of dollars currently being invested into revitalising the area, this unassuming suburb now has even more to offer buyers and investors alike. Ideally situated between Hope Island and Main Beach, Runaway Bay is the next waterfront location to be rediscovered with savvy buyers waking up to its amazing waterways and views. In the past two years it has experienced more than 10 per cent growth in its unit market and 20 per cent in its housing market according to RP Data.

Owner-occupier properties are on the rise and median sale prices are flourishing as the central northern location and affordable waterfront homes attract young families and interstate migrants seeking the idyllic Queensland lifestyle. Northern Gold Coast is seeing sale prices breaking $10,000,000 and waterfront knock downs houses asking in excess of $5,000,000. A boating haven with three marinas and bridge-free access to the Broadwater and Pacific Ocean, Runaway Bay is teeming with beautiful parklands, playgrounds and open spaces to picnic, exercise and relax. Plenty of cafes, fine dining and casual restaurants are readily accessible with shopping centres like Harbour Town and the boutiques of Marina Mirage and Tedder Avenue a mere stone’s throw away. The conveniently situated Runaway Bay Centre has benefited from a $13.7 million upgrade.
A new indoor-outdoor casual dining precinct being added to complement the centre’s unique waterfront location and a comprehensive makeover of the fresh food precinct are both due to be completed by spring this year. The upgrade to nearby Quota Park, an attractive green space connecting Biggera Creek and the Broadwater, is now complete with the addition of a new shaded play area, small event space, barbeques and park furniture along with wider footpaths and an upgrade of the existing fitness equipment. The $5 million Play Attraction upgrade to Broadwater Parklands will soon see the area offering a place for people of all abilities and generations to play, interact and socialise with multiple installations of new accessible play equipment, lush subtropical landscaping, extensive lawn space and plenty of shading.
With the transformation of all this surrounding infrastructure, it’s little wonder that North Gold Coast is recognised as Queensland’s fastest growing region and that property in the area is booming. However, unlike Southern Gold Coast suburbs, such as Palm Beach and Burleigh – which have already priced many buyers out of the market – the north is still at the lower end of its growth spike. Director of NPA Projects Andrew Erwin says those looking to upgrade their lifestyle need not look any further than the suburb of Runaway Bay. “Runaway Bay is not what you think it is,” he says. “Most of the suburb is in close proximity to water, whether that be ocean or canal, and there is exponential growth in the area providing a fresh new outlook for residents. “The Runaway Bay Centre renovation along with the Quota Park, Broadwater Parklands and Marine Parade café precinct revamp will soon see this area thriving and demand skyrocketing.” >> Issue 89 – covemagazine.com.au

Monaco Proper ty Group is one of the many companies investing in the area with the developers set to deliver a luxurious new waterfront development, Belvue. Situated on the water’s edge next to a world class marina, this 31-storey, $100 million project will be the first high-rise tower to be built in Runaway Bay in nearly 35 years. Nestled amongst the highly respected enclave of the McMasters Multi Tower development from the 1980s, Belvue will set a new standard in absolute waterfront living. A secured gated estate, it comprises a limited collection of 30 luxury entire-floor sky homes and three exclusive tri-level architecturally designed freestanding homes. uninterrupted panoramic views of the glistening Pacific Ocean and Gold Coast Broadwater. “Belvue is Runaway Bay reimagined,” says Erwin who has been appointed to market the project. “Sophisticated, luxurious and perfectly located, this development is the essence of coastal refinement. “The Broadwater is arguably one the Gold Coast’s largest and most amazing natural assets and Belvue boasts absolute Broadwater frontage. “Residents will be able enjoy the sunset from their expansive deck and watch the super yachts cross the mouth of The Spit, take a water taxi from the pontoon to their favourite waterside restaurants or wander along the walkway to Charis Seafood and the shops along Marine Parade. “Residents will also have direct access to a private Broadwater cove with sandy shorelines.
“Imagine swimming in your own private beach while protected from the waves from South Stradbroke Island and Wave Break.” Boat parking is also available for both residents and guests and the development features unrivalled resort-style amenities including two swimming pools, hotel style poolside and waterfront daybeds and cabanas, a swim up bar/barbeque pavilion, gymnasium, sauna and steam room. Residents will be spoilt with luxe rich gardens and Palm Springs inspired relaxation areas due to the development’s enormous land holdings. While waterfront living in much of the Gold Coast’s south is a pipe dream for most, those with a mind to explore beyond the bounds of the Coast’s better recognised beachfront postcodes will find that Belvue at Runaway Bay presents a unique opportunity.
Full Floor Sky Homes priced from $2.85 million, the luxurious, contemporary residences offer one of the longest view lines on the Gold Coast and are putting this suburb back on the map. “You can’t get brand new water front properties for this price anywhere else on the Coast, especially not luxury residences of this quality.” says Erwin. “And as the last high rise development site in Runaway Bay, this is a rare find for those keen to get ahead of the coming wave.” For those curious to learn more about the development, Belvue is currently taking expressions of interest.

WITH 28 ADDRESSES across three states of Australia and 45 years’ experience in developing over 50s lifestyle communities, Palm Lake Group’s most opulent and luxurious over 50s resort project yet is currently under construction. Palm Lake Group Managing Director Scott Elliott says Palm Lake Resort Pelican Waters will be the Group’s most ‘première’ and ‘game changing’ address to date. “We up the ante with every new resort we develop and Palm Lake Resort Pelican Waters will be something that Australia’s over 50s community have never before seen,” Scott says. Before the project even commences, Palm Lake Resort Pelican Waters is leaps and bounds ahead of the competition with thanks to its remarkable location. The resort masterplan was designed to take advantage of both the Sunshine Coast’s impressive natural environment and wildlife-filled waterways, and the stellar golf course which has, for two years now, played host to the Isuzu Queensland Open. Pelican Waters Golf Course is also part of Palm Lake Group’s portfolio and hugs the eastern boundary of the highly anticipated Palm Lake Resort Pelican Waters over 50s lifestyle community.

Originally designed by Greg Norman, the course is undergoing an exhaustive reconfiguration to enable the over-50s community to spring to life. The reconfiguration works will be completed under the watchful eye of Norman and his team, to ensure the course retains its elite status in golfing circles. Pelican Waters Golf Course has been ranked Number One public access golf course on the Sunshine Coast and also Number 25 in the top 100 public access courses in Australia. The 321 architecturally designed homes proposed for this community will enjoy water frontage and direct golf course access, as well as all those world-class facilities that the Palm Lake Resort brand is renowned for. This includes an impressive lakefront community hub with a dedicated Sports Centre, Social Centre and Wellness Centre. For those more active residents, the Eldorado Sports Centre will include an eight-rink undercover lawn bowling green, tennis and pickleball precinct and golf simulator rooms, along with a dedicated table tennis room attached to the central fully licensed Sports Bar. From a Social perspective, The Springs Country Club will be home to the main lounge and dining hall, luxury movie theatre, billiards
room and an outdoor pool, cantilevered over the adjacent waterway. Palm Lake Resort’s proven fun-magnet – a fourlane tenpin bowling alley – will also feature here. If other Palm Lake Resort locations are anything to go by, The Springs Country Club will be a popular social meeting place. To round out the Community Hub offering, the Mirador Wellness Centre will support residents’ wellness via an exclusive Milon gymnasium, yoga and Pilates studio, salt therapy room, sauna, indoor heated pool, library, art and craft room and more. Palm Lake Resor t’s award -winning architecturally designed home designs will have homeowners feeling like they are living a holiday every day. One- and two-storey, three-bedroom home designs mix opulent details with functionality (the two-storey layouts even come with a lift). The home designs at this resort will be brand new to the Palm Lake Group, offering homeowners impressive, never-before-seen architectural details that will make their homes uniquely different to other Palm Lake Resort abodes. These clever designs give homeowners a distinct sense of spaciousness with their openplan approach, and the low maintenance nature of these residences allow their owners the scope
LUXURY LIVING
to travel at a moment’s notice – or simply spend their days enjoying the golf course. Homeowners at Palm Lake Resort Pelican Waters will gain their very own premium golf car as part of their purchase, with all homes in this resort offering an extended garage to house their golfing wheels or to be used as additional garage/workshop/storage space. The choice is always theirs. The over 50s lifestyle community is only one element of a greater total luxury precinct emerging at Pelican Waters. As well as the over 50s lifestyle resort and Greg-Norman designed Pelican Waters Golf Course, there’s a dramatic upgrade of the Pelican Waters Hotel underway right now that will see this facility available not only to club members, but also the wider local community. There will be a new stand-alone pro shop, training academy, mini golf, pitch and putt, driving range and glass-clad lakeside chapel to complete the Hotel upgrade. The precinct will be a destination for the whole Sunshine Coast community, not just
limited to those avid golf lovers and/or Palm Lake Resort residents. “It will be a place where local families will enjoy quality time – a place for people to simply come together, celebrate and have fun,” Scott says. Sunshine Coast Council Division 2 Councillor Terry Landsberg helped Scott ‘turn the first sod’ and officially mark the commencement of this project. Cr Landsberg, who oversees council’s Economic Development, Innovation, Tourism, Events and Sport portfolio, says Palm Lake Resort Pelican Waters and the Pelican Waters Golf Course reconfiguration and clubhouse upgrade combined is an ‘exciting new project’ for his community. “Palm Lake Resort will bring their creativity, experience and high level of detail to present an exceptional resort for not only golf lovers, but also those residents who appreciate prestigious gated resort-style living,” Cr Landsberg says. “The range of impressive community facilities proposed for this site will no doubt suit our local families – and will also help keep non-playing
residents entertained while their other half is out on the greens enjoying a round or two.” From a design perspective, Palm Lake Resort Pelican Waters will take its inspiration from Palm Springs and will be the première over 50s destination when complete. Inspiration for this design theme stems from Palm Lake Group’s desire to create a residential resort that cultivates a sunny state of mind while channelling the Palm Springs brand of midcentury modernism. Think clean geometric architecture, natural material finishes and strategic pops of bright colour to brighten the every day. palmlakeresort.com.au

DIVINE DANCE Shen Yun presents China’s True Culture, Before Communism.
WORDS J.C. COOK THE ART FORM at the heart of Shen Yun is classical Chinese dance, developed over thousands of years to become one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world. In the years to come, the story of Shen Yun, a New York-based performing arts company, will become a legend about how a group of elite dancers, musicians, and artists used their talents to save their rich and artistic traditional culture from the perils found in modern times. “Chinese classical dance is not the same as other forms of dances where you just learn the moves and you get it,” says principal dancer Piotr Huang in a video on ShenYunCreations.com. “With Chinese classical dance you have to understand the Chinese culture behind it and then you can master the art,” he says. Shen Yun was formed in 2006 with a mission to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture which had come close to extinction since 1949. For the past 15 years Shen Yun’s artists have performed to millions in sold-out venues such as the Lincoln Center in New York, Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and Palais de Congrès in Paris, among others.
116 covemagazine.com.au
– Issue 89
Shen Yun allows audiences to experience China before communism, when its deeply rooted spiritual heritage shaped the cultural norms, art, music, dance, fashions, and architecture of the ‘Middle Kingdom’. Shen Yun says the company aims to present pure goodness and beauty on stage – a place where heaven and earth intersect and magic is possible. The company’s name, Shen Yun, means the beauty of divine beings dancing. Without shen yun, Huang says a classical Chinese dancer doesn’t have the inner bearing of a Chinese man or woman. “You won’t have the feeling of the dance. You’re just doing pure moves. There’s no meaning behind it,” he says. “So inner bearing is your own understanding of the Chinese culture and the arts and through that understanding you translate it into movements.” The company says this is one of the reasons audiences feel there’s something different about Shen Yun. Shen Yun has become the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, which also performs ethnic, folk, and story-
based dances, with orchestral accompaniment and solo performers. It’s performers bring to life stories from Chinese legends, vignettes of historical events, stories of morality, traditional ethnic and folk dances that show the diversity inside China, as well as events in modern-day China. The performing arts are a powerful tool to convey messages, but for Huang, the arts are meant for a higher purpose. “For example, in the Renaissance period, the arts were used to glorify the divine, or go back to the traditional culture, and I really think this is what arts should be doing,” he says. In fact, many Shen Yun performers have overcome enormous tribulations on the road to reviving traditional Chinese culture, but they find guidance and strength in practising the spiritual discipline of Falun Dafa, which has moral teachings centred on the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance, and meditative exercises. Huang’s most memorable performance was in Paris a few years ago, when his grandfather flew out from China to watch him dance.
They had been separated since Huang was a young boy because Huang could not return to China. “When he came to see me, I was really happy,” Huang says, holding back tears. “I remember him saying that, ‘You guys are the hope of humanity. Keep going’.” Those small words gave Huang encouragement to push through the difficulties of long tours away from home. “I think every Shen Yun dancer has a wish to one day go back to China and perform,” he says. The company’s dancers are propelled by their mission to save their true culture and guided by their spiritual discipline, believe that pursuing virtue alongside their rigorous training allows them to create more beautiful and pure art. This year, Shen Yun will return to Australia with a whole new production for a limited engagement at Toowoomba’s Empire Theatre from 3 to 4 May and at the Gold Coast’s HOTA, Home of the Arts, from 6 to 8 May. Shen Yun will also perform in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Bendigo, and Adelaide.
