EV UPDATE

From sedans to scooters, practical EVs are the vehicles of the future.

I do not recommend buying an EV unless it suits the intended use – i.e., no trips to the Outback – but some sensible horses for courses are arriving on the market.

About now, Chinese maker LDV is saving all our weekends with Australia’s first all-electric ute – ideal for urban tradesmen – and a small cargo van. Mercedes-Benz has launched the eVito panel van and people mover, while Ford is lining up an electric Transit van. If you’re in business, these make sense.

Rolls-Royce has joined the EV fray with the fabulous two-door, four-seat Spectre, unveiled at the recent Paris motor show. The Spectre will enhance the Rolls-Royce experience, the maker claims, providing instant torque, silent running and ‘the sense of one imperceptible gear that have defined the characteristics of its cars since the first example in 1904’.
