Trying of tobacco products among 6th grade students and its connection to social learning theory components
Kairit Jaani, Liis Merenäkk MSc, Piret Simm 06F+6 Abstract The aims of this quantitative empirical research study were to describe the prevalence of regular tobacco use and the trying of tobacco products among 6th grade students during the academic year 2012 to 2013; to describe the links between trying tobacco products in social learning theory settings with demographic, social setting, intrapersonal and school environment factors. This research study is based on data from a survey called Health Promotion Effectiveness in Estonian Schools. The sample consisted of a portion of 6th grade students (in total 1033 children) from several Estonian urban and rural schools with the average age of 12.8 years. 34% of the subjects had tried various tobacco products (e.g. cigarettes, hookah, etc.) and 4% of the students used tobacco products on a monthly basis. Most commonly tried tobacco products were cigarettes. Students from rural areas and schools that used Estonian as their language of instruction had tried more tobacco products than students from urban area schools and schools that used Russian as their language of instruction. Students’ tobacco sampling habits were associated with social learning theory components: the students who had tried tobacco products had more likely friends, parents or siblings who used tobacco products than those students who had not. The students, who had not tried any tobacco products, differed from their peers in the sense that they had higher self-efficacy and inner locus of control. Estimating these factors in conjunction, exposure to smoking 237
