PDO Threadlift Treatment This non-surgical mini facelift, also known as a thread lift, is effective for people with moderate sagging of the face, jawline, and neck. The insertion of PDO threads helps to gently tighten and lift the skin, creating an immediate, visible, and natural appearance.

Maryam Shafiei, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, MSc, PGC, BSc, INMP Maryam with more than 23 years of experience and knowledge in nonsurgical cosmetic treatments, provides advanced aesthetic services in Belfast Skin Clinic.

The benefits of a non-surgical thread lift: • • • • •

Before

Non-surgical lifting and skin tightening Stimulates natural collagen production for 18 to 12 months Stimulates skin rejuvenation, vitality, elasticity, and brighter skin tone Enhances blood flow and stimulates the lymph channels, helping mobilise localised fat Improves skin laxity

After

What does the thread lift procedure entail? The thread lift treatment takes place under local anaesthetic and involves small needle insertion points, which the thread is passed through. The procedure takes around 45-60 minutes depending on what treatment the patient requires. The patient can fully resume their everyday routine and social commitments within a couple of days. PDO Thread lift is a tailor-made treatment which can be adjusted to the patient’s requirements. The thread lift can be repeated every 2-3 years to maintain the results.

For more information or to book an appointment, please call us on 028 9066 7077 or visit our website at www.belfastskinclinic.com

Which areas are treatable using PDO threads? • • • • •

Jawline Neck Upper face Lower face Forehead (Brow Lift)

How soon are the effects visible? It is common for an improvement to be noted immediately following treatment. The full effects can be noted over a period of 6 months as new collagen grows between the threads and continues to give a further lift and tightening to the skin. The PDO threads gradually dissolve over 6 months, however studies have noted that effects can be seen for 2-3 years.

EDITOR’S LETTER

The Road Less Travelled I often think that one of the many benefits of living in this quiet corner of the world is our relatively easy access to mainland Europe. Within in a couple of hours we can be in Paris, London, Amsterdam etc. It is really quite difficult to go wrong in terms of where to visit: there are simply loads of interesting cities within striking distance. Over the summer I spent a few days in Antwerp. When I mentioned I was going there quite a few people wondered why - well I’m happy to report that, although it may not be on the main tourist trail, Antwerp is a stylish and fascinating place in which to spend a few days. We flew from Dublin to Brussels and then got a 30-minute train straight from the airport to Antwerp (and our hotel was directly across the street from the station). In fact, in some ways, it is easier to get to than central London. The city is briming with museums, historic buildings and beautiful churches. On top of that the food (and beer) are top-notch. So if you have become slightly jaded with visiting the usual tourist hot spots in Europe, I would urge you to try somewhere a bit off the beaten track. Dusseldorf here we come.

COLUMN September 2022

LIFE & TIMES EDITED BY KATHY CLUGSTON

Kathy Clugston is a freelance radio presenter. She chairs the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ and presents the weekly entertainment show ‘The Ticket’ on BBC Radio Ulster.

I MUST CONFESS This month, Kathy fesses up to her most wicked deed, inspired by the play The Four Worst Things I’ve Ever Done. What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done? Unless you’ve committed a deliberate and indisputably evil act, it’s a tough question to answer. The reason I ask is because of a recent episode of a radio show I host, The Ticket. Among a tableful of guests was Katie Shortt, an actor in a play by Ewan McGowan called The Four Worst Things I’ve Ever Done. It’s about a young woman named Erin who confesses to her most wicked deeds. For obvious reasons Katie didn’t want to give

away the plot but did reveal that Erin’s crimes got progressively worse as the play went on, beginning with an act of cruelty on her sister’s hamster. “If that’s the starting point,” she said, “you can only imagine what comes next.” This gave me a flashback to an incident in my own life. A truly terrible event… We all did bad things as children: thwacked another youngster, ingested a toy, perhaps tried to eliminate a baby sibling. These childhood misadventures don’t count. Teenage years are often rife with wrongdoing as we experiment with friendships, relationships and substances, push our parents’ rules and expectations to the limit and possibly help ourselves to the odd nail polish and cassette tape from Woollies. (For all of these things I sincerely apologise.) Then there are the swings and roundabouts of adulthood that we never want to admit to: people let down, lies told, trust betrayed. Most of us have a few skeletons of this kind, memories of which can appear out of the blue and send a shiver of shame creeping over our scalp and down the back of our neck. So what is the worst thing I’ve ever done, that I care to admit to in print? Reader, I toasted a mouse. Not on purpose, you understand. I was living in a flat in Amsterdam at the time, a city where virtually every home was infested with mice due to the densely packed, full-of-holes old buildings and surrounding canals. As a vegetarian and animal lover, I couldn’t bring myself to inflict a slow death by sticky glue or even a quick one by flip trap, so I bought a little box which, when primed with peanut butter, tempts the mice in and then closes the door on them, keeping them alive and

able to be removed from the home. I knew they’d have to be taken some distance away. Like slugs, mice have a strong homing instinct. So I would put the box containing one or sometimes two of my furry friends into a holdall and take it with me on the train to work, getting off at a stop several miles away near some fields and releasing its quivering contents into “the wild”. Seriously, I did this. For weeks. Finally one morning I got up and the box was empty. It was empty the next morning too. I did a little jig around my mouse-free kitchen as I made tea and toast, when suddenly there was a flash of light, a high-pitched squeak and a loud “BOOM!” as the toaster exploded. It took a moment for the truth to dawn on me. A wee critter had evidently been having a delicious breakfast of breadcrumbs only to end up in the rodent equivalent of the electric chair. I couldn’t bear to look into the slot. Shaking and sobbing, I donned my rubber gloves and bundled all evidence of my brutal crime into a black bin bag. Fair play to my other guests on The Ticket for chiming in with their own experiences. A comedian admitted to telling his coworker and girlfriend that their boss had found out about their relationship and was going to sack one of them, a practical joke that went down like a lead balloon. A writer revealed he’d several times bought and written birthday cards in the Post Office and only bought the stamp, never paying for the actual cards. Our actions have consequences. I have never again been troubled by mice. The comedian didn’t fare so well, his girlfriend is now an ex-girlfriend. If it turns out the writer has been arrested for card theft I can only, once again, sincerely apologise.

EDITED BY JANE HARDY

Playwright Clare McMahon, whose new play Gap Year explores the self-discovery trip of three sixty-somethings, talks grannies, ageism and gardening.

P

lays begin in various ways. Inspiration and the muse, a deadline and often nowadays, via real-life interviews. That’s the case with Clare McMahon’s Gap Year, the play already attracting a buzz and about to open at The Lyric Theatre, when we meet in the café bar. It’s good for funding but does it really help the creative process, I ask her over coffee. McMahon (35) gets the point but politely fends it off. “I did interview real women who had brought up my generation as I wanted to check out my ideas, and they repeatedly said they felt invisible. That’s something I’d sensed. But all my plays are based on the imagination and creativity.” The idea for Gap Year’s road-trip narrative, a bit like Thelma and Louise without the nasty stuff, came to Clare McMahon when she saw a request for new dramatic ideas spanning Ireland, north and south. She explains: “Fishamble Theatre put out a call for plays to cover the whole of Ireland. I wondered what I could submit and was thinking about my grandmother’s generation.” The idea McMahon came up with was genius. What if three women – Kate, Roisin and Oonagh – decide to grab their moment, their very own gap year. It isn’t quite like their granddaughters’ version, partly because of location. McMahon says she and the cast and production team, including her husband, director Benjamin Gould, were aware of the financial constraints now. “We discussed cost of living the other day and what they could afford. They don’t go to Thailand, but visit every county in Ireland, and they’re frugal. When buying their camper van, there is a scene where they ask the price. The seller names something, then Kate says ‘What’s the real price?’, that is not the one for old ladies.” As the blurb says, newly-widowed Kate, childminder-in-chief Roisin and Oonagh are excited, adding, “some of them they haven’t even heard of!” Understandably McMahon, who started out acting and is still a thesp in spite of having no

fewer than four shows in development, won’t give too much away. “No spoilers, but I can say that it all ends when they die horribly… no, only joking, there is of course a positive ending which I think we all need.” She adds that her play is about new beginnings – “that’s something we are allowed, no matter how old we are”. She touches, too, on loss and her recently widowed gap-year lady says wistfully at one point that she’s only sorry her husband hadn’t lived long enough to enjoy his pension. That is pretty much a Victoria Wood line and McMahon says she admires Wood and Walters. The humour definitely punctuates McMahon’s plot and her characters quip that in three hundred years’ time, archaeologists will dig up three ancient female skeletons and wonder what they were doing in a tent in Donegal. At the risk of a terrible pun, the excitement is of course in tents. Or camper vans. So is there love, maybe even s-e-x, too, for our heroines, I ask? The writer smiles and notes that women of a certain age now have romance in their lives as well as pensions. Later on, actor Frankie McCafferty appears - he has multi-roles in Gap Year, taking on four of the male roles. So are you a bit of love interest, I enquire? He smiles enigmatically, says he’s a priest among other things and vanishes towards the rehearsal room. On the topic of whether ageism or sexism is worse, McMahon is illuminating. She notes that ageism is pervasive and often not recognised as true prejudice. “Carol Moore who plays one of the intrepid gappers says that ageism is one of the last recognised -isms. It’s still a joke to be an old lady.” That could be true, although we bat about the fact that prejudice against us women, the oppressed majority, also remains endemic. If equality was achieved last Wednesday, we frankly didn’t notice it. Gap Year is really about a topic that concerns all of us and that’s identity. How we find it, maintain it in the face of others’ preconceptions. And in the case of ageist

bigotry, how we fight it. As Oonagh, the divorced gap-year traveller, says: “Just because I have more past than future doesn’t mean I have to stay there.” Her rallying cry will no doubt chime with many overtwenty-ones. There will be in this production, therefore, some good craic. In terms of comic influence, McMahon reveals an enthusiasm for Victoria Wood and Julie Walters, but also earlier generations of comedy writers such as Morecambe and Wise and the Two Ronnies. Clare McMahon, who is from Carrickfergus but now lives in south Belfast, had her mind set on treading the boards. She says that her parents, butcher Owen and Housing Executive officer Cecilia, supported her all the way. “When I got into the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, my mother came over with me to find accommodation. It wasn’t as expensive then as it is now and you could get a room in a shared house for about £300 a month. I teamed up with another girl and we found two third-year students to share with.” The educational side of things didn’t always suit McMahon, as she admits. “We were taught to speak in RP, received pronunciation.” That’s fairly posh English and Clare McMahon had to wait to use her soft northern Irish accent. “Well, the curriculum at Central was very classical, Shakespeare onwards.” Oddly, in an earlier era of drama students, the Sixties, it was cool to sound as if you came from Yorkshire. McMahon says that times had definitely changed. But after graduating, the woman whose audition pieces were from Juliet and The Weir, got roles where she could retain her own vocal identity. “I was in a tour of A Midsummer Night’s Dream

with Scottish and Irish actors and we used our own voices. I was Hermia (one of the four lovers) and the Wall.” She took on the juicy role of the female Russian landowner, Madam Ratushinskaya, in The Cherry Orchard at The Greenwich Theatre. McMahon also rested, like well over three quarters of her colleagues in the acting profession. Her day job was caring for children with severe physical and mental learning difficulties. “I would look after all their needs and be on the floor playing an animal.” Another form of acting in a way, you could say. She returned home with her husband Ben Gould, whom she met while a young performer in the Rainbow Factory, after a few years. Now life is creatively stimulating, but they find time to eat out at restaurants off the Lisburn Road where they live. Is it tough being the couple that work and live together? McMahon laughs, saying her husband has criticised her writing in his role as director, but it all seems amicable. When not writing or collaborating with husband Ben on their company, Commedia of Errors, McMahon likes to garden. “The excitement when I grew my own carrots!” We discuss her fondness for dahlias (“I like them yellow.”) and how to keep certain plants alive. “I never succeed with fuchsias, they just huff on me and die.” Maybe she could perk them up with a few lines from Gap Year. Gap Year runs from September 3 to September 25 at The Lyric Theatre (0289038-1081, lyrictheatre.co.uk)

She adds that her play is about new beginnings – “that’s something we are allowed, no matter how old we are”. 76

Aideen Kate

Owner of True Beauty.

We speak to Aideen Kate – one of Ireland’s most beloved make-up artists and award-winning influencers who has created her own beauty brand, True Beauty. What is your signature scent? Replica is my go-to perfume brand, I love ‘when the rain stops’.

How would you describe your style? Girly with a bit of an edge! I like to mix and match outfits that you wouldn’t think would work but do, for example a slip dress with Dr Martens! I love flowy skirts and oversized jumpers. I adore summer but I prefer dressing for winter.

Are there any haircare products you recommend? Olaplex is great and I’ve been using REDKEN a lot lately – my hair feels amazing! I always use a heat protectant too and, of course, everyone knows I love a slicked-back bun. The brand of hair gel I use is called CANTU and is the best ever for fly-aways! It’s cheap and cheerful and you can get it on ASOS, it’s so handy.

What are your wardrobe staples that you can’t live without? I really couldn’t live without a hoody or jumper, it’s my comfort item of clothing.

What is your go-to makeup product? My True Essentials Face Palette – I can’t live without it. It’s from my own brand True Beauty, which I created from scratch. I wanted to create an all-in-one face palette for when I’m on the go and as the name says, has all the essentials - Four powder blush/bronzers, four cream blush/bronzers, and two velvet-formula highlighters.

Do you have a favourite designer or high street brand? I don’t have one, I really love ASOS, Zara and Pretty Little Thing. I recently wore a gorgeous custom piece from Irish designer Aisling Kavanagh, I would love to explore more Irish designers. Do you have any style icons? No, Pinterest is my go-to and I always save random looks from there!

How do you keep fit and healthy, are there any exercises or health foods your swear by? I try to go to the gym four times a week in the mornings! I don’t swear by any health foods but try to eat lots of vegetables with whatever I’m having, but I also have my treats because I don’t restrict myself.

Do you have a skincare regime? Of course, I’m skin obsessed. I love trying new brands but I do think less is more. I would tend to use only 3-4 products in my everyday skincare routine. I always make sure to wear my SPF even on days when it’s not sunny. 78

All Hail XXL!

Time To Get Cosy!

Are you wearing XXL? If not, you should be! On the runways, brands like Balenciaga, Peter Do, and Marc Jacobs have all shown XXL shapes in denim, dresses, and suiting. A close friend who works in fashion has long advised me to size up on clothes to give a high-end feel to high street pieces. It’s worth sizing up in suits, trousers and jackets, jeans and most definitely go XXL in shirts! Regular readers of this column know I buy my most-loved oversized shirts in the men’s section of local charity shops! A fraction of the cost of many high street and designer brands, along with the bonus of knowing that buying second hand clothes reduce landfill and are much better for the environment. RIP skinny jeans, it’s all about the baggy fit. In jeans, Bella Hadid wore an impeccable pair after the Balenciaga couture show in Anine Bing, Paris last month. Big denim Irina Shayk is the perfect entry point Classics into the oversized trend Collection. – it’s a versatile, wear-witheverything piece. The key to oversized jeans is they need to be really big throughout, except for the waist. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the proportion, throw on a heel, a little bit of height and glamour help to offset the volume. Let’s get supersized folks!

Knitwear by Taylor Yates.

They say you most love the season you were born in, if that’s true with an October birthday, it’s no wonder autumn is by far my favourite time of the year. The beautiful bounty of shades and colours that mother nature delivers, light fading in the evenings and that lovely crisp nip in the air means it’s time to snuggle up and get cosy. Every autumn I’m on the hunt for a beautiful knitwear piece, something I can easily integrate into my wardrobe, to wear solo or layer up. The Orla Collection from luxury locally based handbag and knitwear brand Taylor Yates has created the most divine knit wear including skinny sweaters and tanks, each piece hand-knit in Belfast, from fine knit, ultra-soft, 100% Merino wool. “When I was younger, I loved art and being creative, I never imagined I would get to do it every day and love every minute of it. My journey started in the beauty industry in 1998 after working as a Beauty therapist for 5 years, I went onto train in 2003 with Karen Betts at Nouveau Contour in Micro pigmentation. Although I have many years’ experience in both industries, I specialise now in permanent makeup, I am continually educating myself with the latest techniques, highest quality pigments and machines, as the PMU industry is always evolving and I’ve got to watch how it has grown into a true art form. I have worked with many clients of all ages throughout my career but my passion lies with hair loss as having had alopecia myself it is very close to my heart. I work closely with cancer charities & I am the NI representative for the Katie Piper foundation, this charity is for a brighter future for all survivors of burns or scars. In June of this year, I was nominated in the Northern Ireland Hair and Beauty Awards for Semi-Permanent makeup artist of the year 2022 and won highly commended to which I was delighted. My main aim is to help everyone gain the confidence they dream of.”

#Joanne Reviews... Ulster Tatler’s Woman Editor, Joanne Harkness, reviews the Profhilo skin treatment at Cosmetech.

RENEW AND REJUVENATE

Whether it is recently turning thirty or the fact I am getting married next year, something has been ignited in me that I want to take care of my skin, now more than ever. Let’s be honest, we all want to present the best versions of ourselves especially on momentous occasions such as weddings, as we will look back on the photographs for years to come. I will admit, I have been quite lucky with my skin. My years of teenage acne are past me, and as an avid applier of SPF I have been fortunate to not have too many signs of ageing just yet – apart from the odd laughter line, but those are the best sort to have! I knew I wanted to try something different to boost my skin and make it the best it could be – I just didn’t know what I wanted, or needed. This is where Cosmetech came in and guided me in the right direction. Cosmetech is a renowned and accredited skincare clinic specialising in both non–surgical procedures and skin surgery, providing everything from anti-wrinkle injections, to thread lifts and dermal fillers. I went along to the Maypole Clinic in Holywood to meet with consultant, Gerard Smith to get expert advice on what treatment would suit me best. On arrival I knew instantly that Cosmetech

was a professional establishment, each floor in the building has its own speciality, all of which have assigned doctors and consultants. The building also houses a 352 Healthcare Clinic (owners of two, five-star Kingsbridge Private Hospitals located in Belfast and Sligo). With the rising popularity of skincare treatments more and more establishments are offering them to willing clientele, but it is vital to find a skin clinic that is reputable and that the treatments are carried out by medical professionals. My requirements for the procedure were that I wanted something to rejuvenate my skin, lasted longer than the typical facial but wasn’t invasive. I know some of my peers are opting for anti-wrinkle injections at our ripe old age of 30, claiming that prevention is better than cure, however I did feel quite smug when Gerard noted my skin didn’t need that type of help yet – the SPF must be working! What he did suggest was the new kid on the block in skincare – Profhilo, an injectable hyaluronic acid treatment that boosts skin hydration and stimulates the production of collagen for plump, dewy and youthful skin. This sounded like the perfect treatment for me. The treatment is so quick that I agreed to have my first session straight away. The procedure consists of ten injections of the jelly-like hyaluronic acid, which is injected into the cheek and jawline area of the face. Each injection only lasts about 10 seconds, so although it does give a sharp, stinging sensation – it is over so quickly that any pain is very much bearable. Another benefit of this treatment is that there is no downtime necessary, I was able to drive home straight after and there was no pain or discomfort for the rest of the evening. There were slight visible signs of where the injections had been administered – I would describe it as looking like small bee stings, but they had all completely disappeared by the next morning. It is recommended that two sessions of the treatment are needed for the best results, so I booked in for my second session eight weeks later and before I knew it, I was back for round two. This time I was in the equally safe hands of Dr Victoria McAfee who chatted through

the process again – like Gerard, she was very professional yet extremely personable. Gerard, Victoria and their Healthcare Assistant Theressa Irwin made me feel at ease throughout the whole process. Getting any type of injection can be quite daunting, but they made everything so straightforward, it didn’t even faze me at all. Unlike anti-wrinkle injections and other semi-permanent treatments, Profhilo has a more gradual process for developing results as it takes time for the hyaluronic acid to stimulate new collagen growth. It typically takes 2-4 weeks after the second treatment for the full results to be seen. Although, if skin rejuvenation and luminosity is what you desire, then the wait is worth it. After my treatment I noticed my skin was looking smoother and gave off a lovely glow… people who didn’t even know I had anything done were giving me compliments on my skin, a good indicator that it worked! What I liked about this treatment is that it was subtle – it doesn’t change the shape of your face, instead it uses hyaluronic acid (which is naturally produced by your body anyway) and improves the quality of your skin, making it smoother and brighter. It was like an injectable moisturiser, which went directly into the skin layers rather than just sit on the top of the skin… and did I mention it lasts for up to six months! COSMETIC SKIN TAG AND MOLE REMOVAL Consultant Plastic Surgeon Mr. Chris Hoo specialises in the removal of cosmetic moles and skin tags. In the vast majority of cases all of these lesions are benign. But if there is any clinical concern about the nature of the lesion it can be sent off for testing.

Q: Does it hurt having these removed? “Since these are treated under local anaesthetic it shouldn’t! The worse bit is having the injection of anaethetic, which many patients describe as a mild stinging sensation. Cryotherapy does not even need an anesthetic.”

Q: How are skin lesions removed? “In most cases these can be done under a local anaesthetic. If there are no concerns about its nature they can be either shaved off, or excised. Some skin lesions can also be treated by freezing the skin – termed cryotherapy. All options are discussed with the patient beforehand.”

Q: How long does the procedure take? “This depends on what’s being done, but most procedures take between 15 and 30 minutes or so.”

Q & A with Chris Hoo

Q: Can I drive home afterwards? “That depends on you! If you are the sort of person who can drive home after a filling at the dentist then there should be no reason why not. But if you are a bit squeamish, it’s best to bring someone with you. They can at least tell you how brave you were, even if they don’t need to drive!” Q: What about aftercare? “If stitches have been necessary these are generally removed after 5 – 7 days. For best results a combination of steristrips and scar massage are required and which you need to do will be discussed.” Q: Will I have a scar? “Scarring is an inevitable consequence of surgery in anyone’s hands, so yes. But of course the whole point is to be cosmetic and so everything is designed to minimise this. It’s best to consider this as replacing one cosmetic blemish with another one, which should be much better. But it is unrealistic to expect an invisible scar no matter who your specialist is.” For further information or to book a consultation please call Cosmetech on 028 90423200 or visit www.cosmetech.co.uk

EDITED BY REBECCA NELSON

Rebecca is founder and Director of Physiotherapy at Apex Clinic and Apex Headache Clinic.

Let Apex Headache Clinic cure your child’s headaches or migraines Does your child suffer from frequent headaches or migraines? This month, Apex Headache Clinic Founder and Spinal & Headache Physiotherapy Specialist, Rebecca Nelson shares how the team at Ireland’s first drug-free headache and migraine clinic, has been successfully using her evidence based, manual physiotherapy regime to clear children and teenagers of their headaches and migraines as well as treating adults of all ages.

Children suffer from headaches and migraines too While it’s widely known that adults suffer from headaches and migraines, it might surprise you to learn that 70% of school children have a headache at least once a year, with 25% of these children suffering recurring headaches. Furthermore, a staggering 10% of school children experience migraines, affecting both girls and boys. Are headaches ruining your child’s life? At Apex Headache Clinic, our team frequently see the

following treatment, I have been pain-free ever since. The change this had on my life was indescribable. With years of experience of treating headaches and migraine sufferers, I further developed my own regime for treating and clearing headaches and migraines. We offer this unique, drug-free approach for all ages, including children from 4 years old and upwards.

devastating effects that headaches can have on lives. Parents often come to the clinic, after trying all other avenues, including consulting GPs, paediatricians, neurologists and opticians, in desperation to find a cure for their child’s headaches or migraines. At Apex Headache Clinic, we offer hope to families, thanks to our drug-free specialist approach to treating and clearing these debilitating conditions.

Cian’s life was changed after visiting Apex Headache Clinic 15-year-old Cian Smith from County Cavan was given new hope and the opportunity to see a brighter future, following a visit to Apex Headache Clinic. Cian said, “All I’d ever known was life with headaches. I’m told that at the age of 6 months, I began suffering from them. With the onset of a headache, my temperature dropped, I became pale and the pain was so severe that it would cause me to vomit. Nothing in particular seemed to trigger it and we tried all angles such as consulting GPs and paediatricians, undergoing allergy tests and having MRI scans. You name it, we tried it. When I was properly diagnosed as having migraines, I was told that it was something I would have to live with and that I might

The Nelson Headache Approach™ My approach of treating and clearing headaches/migraines, called The Nelson Headache Approach™ is offered in no other clinics in the UK, and its high success rate explains why people travel from all over the UK, southern Ireland and Europe for this treatment. It was whilst I was working as a physiotherapist in New Zealand, early in my career, that I sought treatment for my own migraines. These were diagnosed as stemming from my neck, and

eventually grow out of it. As this was severely affecting my life, it was really hard to hear and to think that I was stuck with these migraines forever. We live in Cavan and all I can say is that it was definitely worth the two-and-a-half-hour drive! My Granny recently commented that I’m a lot more confident and care-free now, which I guess comes from not worrying about how a migraine could ruin my day. In a nutshell, Apex Headache Clinic really has changed my life.” Let Apex Headache Clinic bring relief to your family If your child is experiencing persistent headaches or migraines and you have already consulted with a GP, help is at hand at Apex Headache Clinic. One of our specialist headache physiotherapists will assess your child and start treatment immediately. We have an extremely high success rate and whilst we get many referrals from consultant neurologists and paediatricians, parents can also refer their child to us directly. To book an appointment, call Apex Headache Clinic on 028 9048 4153. No GP referral is necessary.

This month, Ulster Tatler catches up with Patricia Casement to discuss how Kingdom Healthcare is helping people live at home while receiving the care they need with dignity. Patricia, tell us about the work of Kingdom healthcare in Northern Ireland. Kingdom Healthcare is a specialist homecare health agency that operates in every county in Northern Ireland, providing care services for clients across the country. We are a registered company with the RQIA and have over 300 dedicated and experienced staff who receive an exceptionally high standard of ongoing training. Our handpicked staff have experience in caring for clients in any situation, including those with dementia, physical disabilities and complex needs who may require roundthe-clock care. What type of services does Kingdom Healthcare offer? We provide a range of care, dependent on our clients’ needs. We work with every health trust in Northern Ireland to deliver packages for people in their homes, enabling them to stay at home, whilst being looked after by our dedicated carers. We also offer bespoke services for clients with complex needs, and we tailor our ‘Hospital at Home’ service towards those who require an all-around care service within their home setting. Our aim is always to enable our clients to retain their dignity and quality of life while they live at home whilst receiving the care that they need. Our care at home services is also vital as it helps to alleviate loneliness and isolation, which can negatively impact the mental health of those who require care at home. With the healthcare system under immense pressure and our more at risk in society keen to remain at home, how can Kingdom Healthcare help? If a loved one is at home but additional

assistance that is not available through Health Trust packages, we offer private home care, where we tailor a package to meet their needs. For some families who live further away from their loved ones, we offer support and reassurance with daily calls, companionship, shopping and help with household chores. For some others who need a little more assistance, we make their meals, check on medication, help with bedtime and personal care etc. Regardless of our service, our team at Kingdom Healthcare are fully trained to deal with any situation at short notice and we have 24-hour support available for our carers, our clients and our families.

Paul loves being part of the Ulster Tatler cover shoots. He said, “It gives me the opportunity to take my skills and apply them in a different way from our main business of wedding photography. I can then take this cover shoot experience and weave it into our weddings.” Paul & Judith have been married for over 28 years and their wedding business is a two-person team. This gives a unique perspective to the wedding day as they can capture the same scenario from their own unique point of view. While Paul may be more involved in the direction and set up, Judith finds a different outlook and takes photographs from a more observational point of view. Ultimately, their aim is to capture memories that help their couples remember how they felt on their wedding day. Paul explains, “If you look at these two wedding images, both were taken of the same set up, but one was from Judith’s perspective while I was photographing from the front. This is a great example of how we work on a wedding day.”

“Finally I am her husband and she is my wife. This is a little glimpse of our special day; we would ask you to have a look on our social

I started off my wedding morning, going for my favourite breakfast – a hearty Ulster fry.

My

me so everyday we go through her morning routine and get ready for work at 10am. Every day is different at The Courtyard, along with normal management tasks, I can be a painter, gardener, handyman, even a plumber on some days so I wouldn’t have any specific daily routine. We do finish every day with cartoons and cuddles though. 5. Do you have a specific fitness regime? I always try and get in 10,000 steps, which is thankfully quite easy as I would be on my feet for lot of the job but apart from that, running around after my toddler is enough exercise. 6. Do you have any tips for staying positive? Just take a moment to smile and breathe. A nice calming walk can really do wonders to improve the mood as well. 7. What do you think is the best thing about living in Northern Ireland? I love living so close to the coast, whether it’s a five-minute drive down to the beach for a run around, or a nice, relaxing drive up the coastal route, I love being close to the sea.

Amanda Mitchell

8. What is your mantra or favourite quote that you live by? If you can’t change it, don’t worry about it. My mother told me this when I first started working and I’ve always tried to apply this as much as possible and not get caught up in things out of my control.

Owner of The Courtyard, Carrickfergus

1. What do you love most about your job? There’s several things I really love about my job. The first would be when a new shop opens. This is always a really fun and positive day, and it’s so great to see all the new shop owner’s hard work paying off. Secondly, I love that every new season brings a new flower to bloom in the garden due to the types we planted. And lastly, I love that my job gives me the opportunity to meet new people all the time and interact with the community of the town. 2. What has been your career highlight to date? I would say my highlight to date so far

has been completing an entire overhaul renovation of the garden during the very first covid lockdown, it was a great way to welcome customers and visitors back to the centre when we were all allowed to open the doors again. 3. What are your favourite hobbies/ activities outside of work? I really love upcycling, I love nothing more than making an old item look brand new and giving it a new purpose. I also love spending time in the garden, both at work and at home, just tidying up and tending to all the plants. 4. What is your daily routine? I have a toddler who comes to work with

9. Who has been your biggest influence? I wouldn’t say any one person has been my biggest influence, it has varied as the stages in my life have. At one point, I would say my athletics coach would have been my biggest influence but at others, I would say professors or senior business people would be. But all of these people have instilled the same message, to work hard, enjoy success and be respectful.

rom picturesque, tree-lined avenues to lively, bustling streets, south Belfast is a chic and charming area that emits a suburban atmosphere as well as being within close proximity to the city centre. South Belfast is home to an array of electric neighbourhoods such as The Malone Road, the Lisburn Road, Stranmillis and the student favourite- Botanic Avenue. Foodies in search of a culinary delight, or a Saturday night beverage, flock to the area where a wide variety of palettes are catered for. You will be spoilt for choice with an abundance of fine eateries as well as a great range of cosy pubs, lively nightclubs and top-quality cocktail clubs. The Lisburn Road in particular has also become known for its great shopping selection. Walk along the street and immerse yourself in the great range of local boutiques, high-street stores and quirky produce stores. Belfast’s infamous ‘Golden Mile’ begins south of the city where the Dublin Road leads to Great Victoria Street, Bradbury Place and University Quarter. It is here that you will find Queen’s University, a beautiful, historic building that has become instantly recognisable as a landmark in the Belfast area and is definitely worth a visit and the perfect photo opportunity. Surrounding the magnificent university are streets lined with Victorian houses which add another layer of charm to the area. South Belfast is also home to a great number of breath-taking nature trails. Take a peaceful river walk along the Ormeau Embarkment, explore the Lagan Towpath leading to the Lagan Meadows and Shaws Bridge or take a stroll through the beautiful Botanic Gardens. The Botanic Gardens is not only a glorious nature spot but often plays host to a great range of fun activities including live music and family-fun festivals, so make sure to keep an eye out for any upcoming events.

Why I Love...

South Belfast Ulster Tatler speaks to Anthony McArdle from Curran Connolly & Co. Limited... How long have you been living/ working in the South Belfast area? I have worked in South Belfast for the past 20 years and also previously lived in the area for 5 years prior to working in the area. What do you like most about South Belfast? There is a vibrancy and positive vibe about South Belfast that, in my humble opinion, is virtually unmatched in any other area of Belfast with lots to things to see and do with unrivalled restaurants and bars to socialise in. Does South Belfast have any hidden gems? There are lots of new places that

have recently opened post-Covid and sometimes it is even surprising to me how quickly things can change in the area. Not sure if this can be classified as a ‘hidden gem’ but the Ulster Museum is always a great place to visit with lost for the kids to see and do! Where do you like to dine and socialise in the local area? There are a plethora of different restaurants to suit all kinds of tastes in South Belfast. The Jharna restaurant has always been a particular favourite of mine with some tasty spicy Indian meals on offer. I also recently just discovered Orto Pizzabar on the Stranmillis Road which is very relaxed and casual and serves up some great freshly made pizzas!

Are you ready to unleash your AlterEgo? Medical Aesthetics; where art, beauty, science and medicine combine to create an area of expertise that can help us look our best without going under the knife. In an image conscious world of social media, influencers and celebrities we all strive to look as good as our idols, but often these standards are unattainable and unrealistic. Registered Nurse Tara Jamison owner and lead practitioner at AlterEgo Aesthetics in Belfast’s Queens Quarter explains how medical aesthetics can help you reach more realistic goals. Tara said, ”While it’s nice to take inspiration from how good someone looks, we should all learn to love the skin we are in, our beauty is in our uniqueness. Trends come and go, style evolves, but real beauty never goes out of fashion. Be the best version of you! Medical aesthetics has evolved so much in the last decade, that with the right treatment plan patients can have subtle enhancements that are life changing yet almost undetectable. Patients often comment on the compliments they receive, yet no one has guessed they have had work done and that is exactly how a good aesthetic treatment should be.” Whether you want to slow down the signs of aging, replace lost volume, enhance your favourite feature, tackle that imperfection or combat hair loss there are a vast array of treatments to choose from. From medical grade skincare, minimally invasive antiwrinkle and skincare treatments to more advanced dermal filler and PDO threads, there really is something to suit everyone. Male clients are also catered for with an option to attend dedicated male only clinics, as well as a popular hair loss clinic.

Why I Love...

South Belfast How long have you been living/working in the South Belfast area? South Belfast is an area I know so well, I was born and raised in the Sandy Row area and went to school at Victoria College Belfast before attending Queens for my nursing degree. I have now had my clinic, AlterEgo Aesthetics, in the beautiful Queens Quarter for a year this month! What do you like most about South Belfast? South Belfast is such a beautiful part of the city and is so diverse, there really is something for everyone! The Queens Quarter is my favourite area, the leafy avenues, beautiful architecture and period buildings give so much character to the area and it is always bustling with activity. There are some amazing spots for dining and of course a walk around the beautiful botanical gardens is always good for the soul. The Lisburn Road is a close second with its array of shops and restaurants, it’s been really

lovely this summer to see so many people outside enjoying food and drinks, it has such a cosmopolitan vibe! Does South Belfast have any hidden gems? There are so many lovely parks in the area, great for dog walking but Lagan Meadows is my favourite. It is beautiful any time of the year and the lock keepers is great for a coffee to help us keep up with our Belgian Shephard dog! The lyric theatre is a hidden gem when it comes to entertainment, most people think of the Grand opera house, or the Mac but there is always a wide variety of performances and displays on offer in a nice intimate setting, they also do great coffee with stunning views if you’re passing by! Where do you like to dine and socialise in the local area? A A Peculiar Tea on University Road is a must do, it’s not just a meal, it’s a unique dining

experience! I am blown away every time, the attention to detail is unreal, prepare to be amazed! Darcy’s restaurant is also a wee hidden gem in Shaftsbury Square for a more traditional meal, the food and cocktails are great and it’s a beautiful atmosphere. The Empire is a great venue for entertainment with comedy nights, tribute acts and a whole host more. There are 3 floors so something for everyone and there is always a good vibe.

GOOD FOOD GUIDE

If there is one thing we do well in this country, it’s food. Foodie culture has really taken off and farmers’ markets have become increasingly popular with many people travelling far and wide to attend and gather the freshest ingredients for their meals. Some of the most popular and longest running farmers’ day markets take place at St George’s in Belfast. St Georges dates back to 1890 and remains one of the most popular markets in the UK and Ireland. After lockdown, many people were excited to get back to restaurants and cafés to enjoy the delicious food that is on offer, as well as soak up the electric atmosphere with friends and family. Local restaurants and takeaway establishments place a greater emphasis on allergies and intolerances, providing more vegan and gluten-free options so that needs are catered for. But remember, it is not all about the food. With a number of award-winning breweries and distilleries in Northern Ireland, you are guaranteed to find the perfect aperitif or night cap to round off your dining experience. Food and drink are at the heart of the Northern Ireland, so read on to see a whiskey-inspired event, a perfect picnic recipe and some local companies who have achieved star ratings at the Great Taste Awards 2022.

Ulster Tatler | GOOD FOOD & DRINK GUIDE AUTUMN 2022

‘Pimp up your Picnic’ With Inspiring Campaign From Crabbie’s Ginger Beer Crabbie’s is taking a fresh look at al fresco eating and drinking with a new collaboration celebrating the refreshing flavours of its legendary Alcoholic Ginger Beer. The iconic drink has teamed up with popular food and drink blogger Pippa Perriam, @eatinburgh, to give the Classic British Picnic a modern makeover, asking Pippa to share her top tips and inside knowledge of Britain’s eating hot spots to help Brits move away from the soggy sandwich and flask of yesteryear. From clever styling and eco picnicware to easy recipes and stunning locations, the partnership will be supported by a digital campaign packed with content from the collaboration – all inspired by Crabbie’s flavourful ginger beer range. Lashings of ginger beer have long been deemed the perfect accompaniment to a summer picnic and with Crabbie’s, drinkers get all the refreshment and flavour – but with a grown-up dash of alcohol. Its range of Original, Rhubarb, Raspberry and Strawberry and Lime ginger beers are delicious served straight from the bottle or over ice with a slice of lime, whilst their new Original Alcohol Free beer offers an option for those looking for low or no alcohol options. Pippa’s tips for thinking outside the (picnic) box! • Head to the Coast – why not enjoy some world class seafood which we’re so blessed with here in the UK. Some of my favourite seaside seafood shacks across the country are – Crail Crab Shack (as featured on my social posts), Riley’s Fish Shack in North Shields and Sole Bay in Southwold Suffolk. Either enjoyed sat on a pier or on a beach with sandy toes. And don’t forget some throw blankets, to wrap around your shoulders at sundown – bliss. • Savour Street Food – the UK’s street food scene is fantastic and you can find markets in most major cities – The Pitt in Edinburgh, The Big Feed in Glasgow and Bristol’s weekly market at St Nicholas’ Market are some of my favourites. Grab a dish to takeaway and enjoy in your favourite city spot and save on the cooking. • Go global – when it comes to picnic food, the world is your oyster. Consider hosting a themed picnic with a spread inspired by your favourite holiday destination. Some Spanish picnic tapas, a Mexican feast, or even some delicious local fayre to offer a taste of your hometown, this works especially well if you are hosting for friends from outside the area. Another option is to host a colour themed picnic, each person brings a dish of their selected colour (matching outfits of course encouraged!) • Set the mood – create a picnic playlist on your ipad – think relaxing Ibiza sunshine vibes, or a festival playlist to remember great times. You could even ask friends to suggest their favourite summer anthem in advance to create a talking point on the day. • Perfect your presentation – because not all picnicware is created equal! When it comes to what to sit on, often a water-resistant underside is a must! However, preventing soggy bottoms aside, it’s worth going a little ‘extra’ for a beautiful boho vibe. Think pretty quilts, blankets or mats that you have at home, if you don’t want to get these dirty, drape them over your waterproof rug. If you are driving to your spot, then why not bring some striking scatter cushions for people to lounge on, think colour, comfort and creativity! And if you are going ‘all out’ two wooden pallets stacked together, covered with a lovely tablecloth or scarf make a stunning picnic table. Don’t forget to add some handpicked flowers in a pretty pot in the middle.

• Pair with care – matching your food and drink is a great touch to really pack in the flavour. One of my favourite picnic recipes that work so well with the Crabbie’s Ginger Beer range is as follows: Three Cheese Garlic Twists A great way to use up cheese at the back of your fridge. I’ve suggested Cheddar, Parmesan and Gruyere here but feel free to mix it up with whatever you have to hand. I’d recommend keeping a block of puff pastry in the freezer for occasions like this, so not even a trip to the supermarket is needed! Served up with a spicy Crabbie’s Ginger Beer to cut through the decadent cheese makes for a great pairing. Ingredients 1 sheet ready rolled puff pastry 4 handfuls of grated cheese (I suggest Cheddar, Parmesan and Gruyere) 1 beaten egg 3 tbsp butter, melted 2 garlic cloves, crushed Method Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Open out your puff pastry and press in the cheese using a rolling pin Fold your pastry in half and roll to thickness of a £1 coin Brush with an egg, then cut the cheesy pastry into 10 strips and twist Bake for 20-30 minutes until golden brown When your twists are nearly ready mix your melted butter with crushed garlic (if you have any fresh parsley to hand, adding a little bit of finely chopped parsley here would add a lovely pop of green) Brush with your garlic butter when fresh out of the oven, leave to cool for 10 minutes and enjoy!

Great Taste Awards 2022

‘Great Taste’ is the largest and most trusted food and drink accreditation scheme. It supports and promotes food and drink producers, large and small, giving buyers and food lovers in the UK and overseas reliable recommendations for great tasting food. The 2022 Great Taste Awards attracted 3,500 food producers who submitted a colossal 14,205 products. The entries were blind tasted by a panel of 500 experts over a 90 day period with only 1.7% (c.241 products) being awarded the coveted 3 Gold Star status. Of these 241 products, only five were from NI, with three local producers being shortlisted for the prestigious Golden Fork Awards in Southwark Cathedral, London – (Ballylisk of Armagh, Corndale Farm and Baronscourt Estate). What do the stars mean? 3-stars: Exquisite Extraordinarily tasty foods – around 2% of products are awarded 3-stars each year. Don’t leave the shop without buying it! 2-stars: Outstanding Above and beyond delicious – less than 10% of entries will achieve this rating. 1-star: Simply delicious A food that delivers fantastic flavour – approximately 25% of entries will achieve this rating each year.

Have a gold star dining experience at home

Wondering what’s for dinner tonight? With SPAR and ViVO own-brand ranges receiving six more stars at the Great Taste Awards, there has never been more choice on your doorstep. The Kitchen, enjoy local and The CHEF ranges have seen five of their products awarded stars this year, which means there are now 24 Great Taste Award stars giving the seal of approval on our products. Picking up the most stars was The Kitchen range, with the Bread & Butter Pudding receiving two stars, the judges described it as “indulgent, honest and truly delicious”. The desserts should be at the top of every customer’s list as the judges also described the Salted Caramel Apple Pudding as “delicious” and awarded it with one star. You can be assured your meal will be of the highest quality, as The Kitchen range is made up of local products from top suppliers across Northern Ireland such as DailyBake, Big Pot and Davison Puds. These award-winning ranges are perfect for all occasions, whether it’s date night, a family party or just a weeknight off from cooking. With flavour packed mains, sides and desserts from the best local suppliers, there’s no need to venture further than your local SPAR, EUROSPAR, ViVO or ViVOXTRA store when deciding what’s for dinner this week.

Brilliant Ballylisk Brie Ballylisk brie received 3 stars at the Great Taste Awards. This is what the judges had to say: This looks a picture perfectly round. Perfectly ripe, the paste just starts to ooze out but holds itself in check. The rind has an appropriately funky nutty note and encloses a wonderfully rich, creamy paste - this has enough ‘farmyardy’ tang for interest but without any bitterness. The condition is spot on. This appealing looking brie delivered entirely what we hoped to find. The ripeness of this brie was perfect, the crust was delicate but firm with the mildest pleasing hint of mushroom. The paste was pure cream and we loved it and could have devoured the entire round! This brie looks absolutely stunning. Its white bloomed rind is scored in attractive lines. The paste is creamy and velvety, gently oozing onto the board with a slightly firmer core. There is a creamy, gently ‘farmyardy’ nose. On tasting, that rind is soft and yielding, the paste silky smooth and melts on the tongue with savoury salty notes that linger long on the palate. This cheese is in perfect condition and is an absolute joy to eat. What a stunning looking cheese with a rich, lactic, fresh aroma. The texture - what can we say? Rich, creamy and gives the most amazing mouthfeel, releasing flavour rich with fresh dairy notes and an umamirich, rounded finish. This is so well balanced, so rich and tasty with clean dairy notes you just want to keep eating.

AWARD WINNING KITCHEN DESIGN Award winning designer Darren Morgan has always championed the art of kitchen and luxury furniture design, but his new revolutionary approach is taking KBB design to the next level and delivering exciting opportunities for businesses working in the KBB, property and interiors sectors. Collaboration is key to his approach with the recent launch of his specialist design studio, darrenmorgandesign.com striking at the very heart of conventional thinking. No longer should KBB design be neatly packaged within a showroom façade, instead Morgan has unleashed the process of functional furniture design, allowing it to stand alone as an influential design discipline and making it available to businesses and other professionals who are focused on exceeding expectation and pushing the boundaries of design evolution. Morgan calls upon his considerable experience and expert knowledge of the KBB industry to deliver high quality design solutions that are tailored to each business. Current partners are also opening new revenue streams and increasing the potential of their business by tapping into Morgan’s unique knowledge of KBB production techniques and on-site project management. Having the option to remotely integrate specialist KBB design services into a business

is allowing architects, property developers, furniture manufacturers and luxury KBB retailers to take advantage of every opportunity, ensuring that expert knowledge is available when needed. And it’s this ability to deliver KBB design to a multi-disciplinary and international client base that is helping to create new opportunities for everyone involved. Morgan is not only helping

businesses to elevate their range of specialist design services, but he is also helping them to connect with each other, providing a unique opportunity for mutually beneficial collaboration and growth. For more information, visit darrenmorgandesign.com

QUOOKER INTRODUCES THE NEW AND IMPROVED CUBE

Quooker has introduced its latest product development, the new and improved CUBE. An accessory that fits easily onto any existing Quooker tap, the CUBE provides instant chilled and sparkling water. Following the successful launch of the CUBE in 2019, the new CUBE is lighter, more compact and easier to install, whilst taking up less under-sink space. It also boasts a state-of-the-art touch screen digital display panel that will show how much sparkling water is left, alerting users when cartridges and filters need replacing. The new CUBE also features an improved water flow for the chilled water mode. The improved CUBE comes with two different effervescence levels – the same strength as the current CUBE and a softer level with fewer bubbles. Users can now pick their preferred level of fizz in their drinks, meaning better flavour and versatility. The system is also equipped with a new and improved Active Carbon and Hollow Fibre filter. Easier to install and replace thanks to its easy-to-access placement, the new filter optimises the taste and odour of tap water. CUBE delivers super chilled and sparkling water that can be enjoyed without having to wait or waste any water. Furthermore, one cannister of CO2 yields 60 litres of sparkling water, eliminating the need to buy single-use plastic bottles. Dispensing precisely the amount of sparkling and chilled water needed at any given moment, the CUBE ensures responsible consumption, offering a sustainable solution in the kitchen. The new CUBE delivers a revolutionary and intuitive system to create a tap that truly does it all. For more information, visit www.quooker.co.uk/CUBE 140

ARCHITECT

BUILD YOUR DREAM HOME

Des Ewing Residential Architects is an architectural practice based in Holywood, Co. Down. As a practice, they specialise in the procurement and design of bespoke homes. The practice is owned and run by Des Ewing, who is a chartered architect and a member of the RIBA. Des Ewing Residential Architects has been in practice now for over 20 years and has been responsible for in excess of 200 individual homes and numerous exclusive residential developments throughout the UK and Ireland. As the team concentrate soley on residential projects, it enables them to hone their techniques and continue to cultivate the technical fine points to produce more beautiful, practical and resilient homes. They aim to constantly improve the detailing and customer service, to produce more reliable, tailored and beautiful homes in which clients love to live. Their ethos as a practice is to make houses the best they can be and have clients who are very proud and happy to be living in them. It is not just about the design and a set of detailed

drawings, but the opportunity to be able to make a real difference to people’s lives and help fulfil their dreams. Clients in the position to build their own home have likely worked hard for that opportunity and want to be able to trust their architect to advise, guide and listen to them; Des Ewing Architects provides such a service. They say, “We strive for perfection in every project, no matter what size. We listen to our clients, talk with them and take the time to create the look and ambience they aspire to. It is about reading the client; not necessarily what they say about a proposal, but often what they don’t say – a look or a pause that tells you they are not convinced. At that stage it is about taking the time to tease out what it is that they do or don’t like. This takes time, experience, skill and dedication. This level of commitment to our client provides them with the comfort to know nothing is compromised.” Des Ewing Architects provides a full and dedicated service starting from outline proposals, design, planning permission, detailed design to site management and final completion of your

project. Working from a head office in Holywood, Co. Down, and field office in Mayfair, London, offering high-end residential properties across the UK and Ireland.

Q&A - ARCHITECT

BUILD YOUR DREAM HOME

EXPERT ADVICE ON BUILDING YOUR DREAM HOME ULSTER TATLER SPEAKS TO GARETH BOYD FROM 2020 ARCHITECTS ON BUILDING YOUR DREAM HOME.. What do clients need to take into consideration when selecting a plot of land? First and foremost- if the land is suitable for development. Not all empty plots are a guaranteed building site, even if the land is family owned. Planning policy has strict guidelines under which all development is scrutinised, and the site selected must come under one of these policies to be considered for Planning approval by the local council where it lies within. The land should be accessible. Particularly rural sites can be beautiful but when it comes to delivering building materials etc, a safe and uncomplicated path will be appreciated by all. Access is also key in urban areas- Right of Way and shared accesses can also cause issues in more built-up areas so best to refer to a professional consultant at an early stage, when choosing a plot. The cost of the site is likely to be the most driving factor and a financial advisor should be consulted at the earliest point in the search to ensure the value of the plot is sustainable and

to ensure a purchase wouldn’t result in negative equity. The aesthetics of the site are probably most important for the designer/ architect but will be considered by a sensible buyer. The geometry of the site, how the site is framed by vegetation, neighbouring plots and the sun path are all key aspects when setting up the spatial arrangement of a building. What recommendations would you give when designing your home to your current lifestyle? Interior design is very subjective so your home should be finished for your own comfort and personal needs. It is easy to get carried away in how others would view the space, but the most important thing is that it works for you and your family. Practical storage has become a fundamental aspect of modern living and helps with the flow

of a busy family home. Space for family time is just as critical as private space so its good to have dedicated areas for each. Natural and artificial lighting can significantly change an internal space. In modern homes, maximising glazed areas and openings has become a common feature but it’s just as crucial to consider how these features are dressed and shaded. Furnishings and finishes help make the spaces comfortable and welcoming and personal touches help to make the space individual and show personality so it’s key to not hold back and be creative.

BUILD YOUR DREAM HOME

BRINGING HOME AUTOMATION TO YOUR DREAM HOME Mason Automation specialises in all types of home automation, whether it be smart lighting, smart heating, blind control to home cinemas, with everything working together as one. Having a fully automated home transforms how you live and improves your day to day living. Your smart home does everything for you, so you don’t have to. The owner, Mark, is an electrical engineer and his background is in automation having spent the last 15 years prior to Mason Automation working across the UK and Ireland. With a keen interest in tech, the transition was quite easy. In August, we have just recently opened our new showroom outside Cookstown to showcase the services we have to offer and let you see it working in a home environment, plus getting a chance to use it yourself. You wouldn’t buy a car without test driving it, so why not the same with your smart home? For us, no two projects are the same and each one is tailored to the client’s lifestyle and needs, and of course their budget. Everyone wants a smart home, and our aim is to help them achieve it, no matter how small or large it is. We are currently working closely alongside interior designers, lighting designers and architects, collaborating with them from concept to completion. No matter what stage of the project you are at, we are happy to consult, whether it be a new build, renovation or retrofitting an existing space. We believe “the only limit is your imagination”.

“With an unique genre defying style, Sharon Shannon is bold and fearless in her experimentation of sound.” EDITED BY KELLIE BURCH KELLIE@ULSTERTATLER.COM

Sharon Shannon Big Band concert Belfast TradFest returned in style as the city was treated to a jam packed programme of traditional music, song and dance with world-class concerts, masterclasses, talks, CD launches and live sessions. I was delighted to attend festival headliner Sharon Shannon Big Band concert in the Ulster Hall. The evening started with a VIP reception which was sponsored by Belfast Whiskey Week. As well as hearing Paul Kane talk about the success of the community-led initiative which aims to reclaim Belfast’s whiskey heritage, guests on the night were gifted a Belfast Whiskey Week branded dram glass and a beautifully packaged sample box to try at home. The sold out concert was opened by the insanely talented Liam Ó Maonlaí, frontman of the Hothouse Flowers (who were also part of the EastSide Arts Festival, see page 166). This rare solo set saw him alternate between playing the Grand Piano, Bodhrán and Tin Whistle the result was mesmerising. Although Ó Maonlaí set the bar high, Sharon Shannon and her eclectic Big Band certainly matched it. With an unique genre defying style, Sharon Shannon is bold and fearless in her experimentation of sound. As an assemble, Sharon Shannon Big Band weaves together French-Canadian reggae, hip-hop, dance and classical with a framework of traditional sounds and instruments highlighting their true versatility as musicians. Soaking up the highly anticipated sold out performance were Artistic Director of Belfast TradFest Dónal O’Connor, Chairman of Belfast TradFest Ray Morgan, CEO of the Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce Ann McGregor and RTÉ’s Conor McAuley. With such a world class traditional talent on display, the team behind this year’s Belfast TradFest deserve a standing ovation for offering such a remarkable lineup, putting our city in the centre of the flourishing traditional music map. Sharon Shannon Big Band concert took place at Ulster Hall on 29 July.

Opening of Parr’s Ireland Gallery I at Belfast Exposed was a riot of colour, with dashes of monotone, as it launched the highly anticipated Parr’s Ireland: 40 Years of Photography, a retrospective of work by esteemed British documentary photographer, Martin Parr. Guests at the opening included exhibition producer Tracy Marshall-Grant, Belfast Exposed CEO Deirdre Robb, photographer Sean McKernan, and photographer Clara Scullion. Parr, who has taken photographs in Ireland over a 40 year period, captures a fascinating snapshot of the country from 1979 to 2019 documenting the changing cultural and social norms of Irish life. This exhibition likewise is constantly evolving, from Parr’s original early black and white photos, to bold and innovative colour

photography. As well as a focus on the West of Ireland, where Parr lived from 1980-1982, the exhibition also includes fragments of the 2018 commissioned documentary project on Tourism in Belfast taking into account two key historical events: the legacy of the Titanic and the ‘Troubles’. Vivid with equal measures of hope and despair, ‘Parr’s Ireland’ is a detailed and scintillating showcase that casts a unique eye over Ireland and all the components that make it what it is today. As well as Parr’s exceptional exhibition, guests were in for a treat with the opening of two other remarkable exhibitions: ‘Valley of Tears’ by Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Cathal McNaughton, and ‘Strangely Familiar’ by Future Artists talent Samantha

Johnston. ‘Valley of Tears’ which ran in the Studio Gallery until 27 August, is a sobering and empathetic collection of portraits capturing civil unrest in Kashmir. Meanwhile ‘Strangely Familiar’, which runs in Gallery II until 24 September, is an unnerving body of work which uses different types of film to explore common place items combined with the unusual and unexpected. Both insightful exhibitions acted as the perfect accompaniment to Parr’s thought-provoking exhibition, and as a collection, these three compelling showcases highlight what a gem of a gallery Belfast Exposed truly is. Parr’s Ireland: 40 Years of Photography was opened on 4 August 2022.

Hothouse Flowers This year the EastSide Arts Festival celebrated its milestone 10th birthday. And what better way to kick-start the celebrations than with a performance from the magnificent Hothouse Flowers. Guests, such as East Belfast Partnership’s Michelle Bryans, EastSide Festival Director Rachel Kennedy, Arts Council NI’s Karly Greene, East Belfast partnership Chairman Andrew Hassard, and Walkway Community’s Janice Hill, were welcomed to Banana Block - an innovative museum and events space in East Belfast - with an open bar brimming with local concoctions from such places as Boundary Brewery. The audience were wonderfully warmed up by rising talent, Sasha Samara. Already

every inch an indie pop star, Samara’s distinct voice and eclectic and honest songs filled Banana Block with a joyful energy that had everyone on their feet. With the atmosphere already buzzing, the main act took to the stage. With four decades in the music industry under their belts, the Hothouse Flowers know how to work the crowd. This traditional band which is bursting with soul first came to prominence with the release of their debut album, ‘People’, thirty years ago. As well as building a legion of fans, ‘People’ remains one of the most successful debut album releases in Ireland to date. With hits like ‘I Can See Clearly Now’, and ‘Love Don’t Work This Way’, charismatic

frontman Liam Ó Maonlaí and the rest of Hothouse Flowers were absolutely electric. Whilst mesmerising from start to finish, the set came to a phenomenal close with the climatic ‘Don’t Go’ which had the audience singing at the top of their lungs. This was my first time having the opportunity to see the Hothouse Flowers live, and it was an emotive experience that I will not forget. Hats off to EastSide Arts Festival who definitely know how to throw an epic birthday party. The Hothouse Flowers at EastSide Arts Festival took place on 4 August.

Maurice Jay’s Pleasuredome CS Lewis Square, under the watchful eye of the bronze Aslan sculpture, was transformed into the ultimate (outdoors) 80s party when Maurice Jay’s Pleasuredome brought the EastSide Arts Festival to an electrifying close for 2022. Legwarmers and all things neon were the order of the day as guests, such as fashion blogger Louise Vance and her partner Adrian Quinn, and the colourfully cool Erin Goan and Paddy McCallion, got ready for 80s heaven with a blistering set of retro tunes from Downtown Breakfast Show’s Gary Myles. With the mood set, Pleasuredome stormed to the stage kitted out in acid washed jeans, zebra print and even a flight suit fit for Tom Cruise’s “Maverick”. The band, who are regular performers

in venues like the Belfast Empire, as well as touring across the country, have a loyal fan base, and it seemed that several were out in force as guests of all ages danced along as the band made their way through a packed catalogue of 80s classics. An absolute highlight was when the familiar chords of Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill’ rang out. The iconic song, which made it back to the top of the charts this year thanks to its genius use in Netflix’s Stranger Things, was a bold choice for the playlist - but in the expert hands of Pleasuredome, it was one of my highlights from the night. With an evening which had forecasted rain and thunderstorms, the closing of EastSide Arts Festival instead saw Pleasuredome bringing an energetic ray of sunshine - even

though it got a touch emotional towards the end as the band bid a (hopefully temporary) farewell to lead female vocalist Ciara Mackey who is taking a break to rehearse for her stint as Imelda in the upcoming touring stage production of Roddy Doyle’s The Commitments. Under the super leadership of Maurice Jay, Pleasuredome are an exuberant band to watch. Each member plays their part to perfection and the result is a fun-filled night that will not fail to entice you to the dance floor. I can’t think of a better way for the EastSide Arts Festival to wrap up its smashing 10th birthday programme of events. Maurice Jay’s Pleasuredome closed the EastSide Arts Festival on 14 August.

BOOK EXTRACT

The Best Digital You That You Can Be This month we feature an article by Irish author, Judith Cuffe, on the Social Media persona we present (versus the reality). I’m prone to sharing the odd fashion picture on social media. Far be it from me to blow my trumpet, but I’m not bad at pulling a rigout together. So, I share what I know. Standing with one foot forward, shoulder angled, hip popped, chin tilted, I can drop a dress size at the click of a finger. Nowadays, that probably makes me guilty of promoting a negative body image. Then again, who am I, only a middle-aged mum with not nearly enough followers to ever stand accused? So why do I do it? Why do I present an image of myself far more pulled together than I probably am in reallife? I was raised to put my best foot forward, literally, in this case. Not to mention, it’s a break from the reality of “in” activewear and pondering how long I can go between washing my hair. For me, it’s not about one-upmanship or trying to be better than anyone else. It’s about being the best me. When it comes to being the best digital you that you can be, no one does it quite like the influencers, and for it, no one is quite so criticised, trolled, abused, and targeted. “Fake!” “Unrealistic standards.” “Freeloading off their looks.” Putting one’s best foot forward is nothing new, nor is people getting worked up about it. Long before social media influencers, there was keeping up with the Joneses. We’re all guilty, both on and offline. Take the people who’ll tell you everything couldn’t be better,

thank God, when you bump into them at the shops when their elderly parents are ill, their teenager is off the rails, and they’re knee-deep in peri-menopause as they are in financial ruin. That’s life. Unfortunately, so is people who get a kick out of catching other people out, and it’s far easier to do so online. Let’s face it: few of us present ourselves to the world precisely as God made us. In daily situations, we are different forms of the same person depending on who we speak to – think “telephone voice”. Aesthetically, I’ll never bin my support knickers, ditch my false tan, make-up, gel nails or stop getting my hair highlighted because that’s me - ever-so-slightly fake, and not afraid to say it. Social media, intended initially as a means to share and interact, has become a powerful marketing tool. It’s also a breeding ground for the selfrighteous watchers who scour the feeds of influencers, celebrities, acquittances, neighbours, and even friends, to find fault and judge. They’re the first to point out that no one has skin as flawless as Mary’s without using a filter. I ask you this so what if Mary filtered her photo? Why not let her have her moment, tell her she looks fantastic, and move on. Perhaps Mary isn’t feeling as confident as she once was. Who should we blame for that? Influencers? Hardly. The best course to take social media is with a pinch of salt. Recognise it for

what it is – a parallel world of sorts, but one in which the same rules should apply – kindness, patience and empathy. So why not stop the mindless scrolling. Instead, share and interact as much as you examine. Follow the right kind of people. There are two types in both worlds: those who say it like it is and those who keep their cards close to their chest. Ensure you have a generous helping of both in your on and offline life. And if someone doesn’t bring out the best in you, unfollow them. It’s a two-way street, so take responsibility for your actions. Actually, when you think of it, that’s the best digital you that you can be.

Judith Cuffe’s novel UNFOLLOW ME - a mix of romance, mystery and thrills - is out now from Poolbeg Books.

ARTIST DRAWING INTERNATIONAL ACCLAIM

Well-known local artist and business owner Stephen Whalley has been taking his artistic talent to a whole new level by offering his talented services to National and International clients by painting ‘LIVE’ at some prestigious events. Working closely with charitable organisations and legal institutions, Stephen has painted this year at gala dinners in front of crowds of up to 1000 people. The dinners have been attended by some world class sports personalities and government figures and this Christmas, Stephen is set to paint at a special dinner which will be attended by Royalty. Entertainment has always been in Stephen’s blood, displayed in his previous work as a World Yoyo Demonstrator for an American based company over 25 years ago. He is grateful to be performing live once again, now showing

of his painting talent to large crowds! Stephen paints a given scene or topic throughout the evening and the finished oil painting is then auctioned off at the end of the evening for charity. He has been flying back and forth to London to paint at some very prestigious events and charitable organisations and the feedback has been amazing! Stephen also recently launched a new Wedding service where you can book him to come along and paint ‘LIVE’ on your wedding day capturing the atmosphere and venue where you tie the knot! The married couple then have their painting framed and hung in their home as a beautiful memento of the day.

Do you have a charitable dinner or corporate event that Stephen could paint at? Or a wedding or special occasion you’d like to book him for? Feel free to get in touch or pay him a visit online or at his studio in Belfast to discuss your thoughts and ideas with him!

The Word

CONSIDERING FOSTERING? Avery Bowser, Fostering Services Manager at Action for Children in Northern Ireland, discusses how to know if it is the right time to start your fostering journey. TALK Discuss what you are thinking with your family and friends. Ask their honest opinion whether they think you have the skills to be a foster carer. Things to consider would be: are you empathetic, caring, resilient and patient? If you know anyone who fosters, talk to them. START READING There are a lot of resources out there that will give an insight into fostering. The Action for Children website features fostering blogs filled with tips and advice. You can also find real stories from our foster carers who discuss what fostering is like for them. DO RESEARCH Now is the time to ask questions. Are you unsure if you meet the criteria to foster? Do you want to know more about fostering? Then contact our fostering team. They will send you a copy of our information pack and chat through any questions you may have. CONSIDER YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES Have you recently had a relationship breakdown, lost a job, or experienced bereavement? If you have had a major change in circumstances in the last year, now might not be the best time to foster. BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF There are questions you need to ask yourself. Such as, are you ready to invite someone into your family and your life? How is your general health, fitness, and wellness? Do you have other commitments or stressors in your life? When you foster, you need to

Avery Bowser.

be able to say to yourself honestly that any children who live with you, will be your priority. Fostering is not easy. However, watching a young person thrive in a safe and loving home is such a special and rewarding experience. To foster you need to be over 21 years old, have a spare room and have love to give. Golf Victory for Ulster Press Golf Society

Royal Portrush has been presented with a trophy won by Fred Daly almost 75 years ago to add to a collection of special memorabilia which the club is putting on display in honour of the former Open Champion. The News of the World match play cup which he won at Royal Birkdale in 1948, the year after his historic victory at Royal Liverpool was handed over to the men’s captain Ashley Moore. The cup is one of a number of items which have been obtained as part of a programme to develop a major archive, some of it dedicated to the man who was born and brought up in Causeway St., Portrush, not far from the Dunluce Links which he regarded as his spiritual home. They include two of his blazers which he wore when he was captain of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) and as a member of four Britain and Ireland Ryder Cup teams between 1947 and 1953. They were recovered from a guest room wardrobe in a house in Co Fermanagh. Copies of the four score cards which he signed off when he won the Open at Royal Liverpool in 1947, as well as a Waterford Crystal pen and clock set presented to him at Royal Dublin by the Links Golf Society a few years before died aged 79 in 1990, will also be on display. The cast of a life-sized sculptured metal bust of the former Open Champion is also to go on show. His gold Open Championship medal is already on display alongside Darren Clarke’s (2011, Royal St George’s) in a cabinet in the club’s foyer. Sir Richard McLaughlin, the club president, who is heavily involved in helping to establish the archive, said, ““The club is very, very keen to secure as much memorabilia as possible, not just linked to Fred Daly. Maybe documents, old photographs and various objects which tell the story and history of Royal Portrush. We would encourage anyone who finds anything in an attic or around their house relating to the club’s history to get in touch so that we can continue to expand our archives.”

DRAWING UP A WILL

Making a Will is imperative to ensure that your money and property is dealt with in the way which you would want after you die. Many people don’t realise the importance of drawing up a Will until it’s too late. For example, if you die without a Will in place, the law will decide how your possessions are passed on. Another instance is that the law does not automatically recognise partners as having the same rights as husbands and wife. Inheritance tax is another matter which often leaves people confused. A Will can help to make these matters clear cut. The grieving process is normally a difficult one but getting legal advice and assistance now means there is one less thing for your loved ones to worry about.

If you have children or dependents who may not be able to care for themselves, a Will is vital to ensure they are looked after and provided for after you are gone. A solicitor can advise you on the intricacies and complexities associated with individual Will writing. It is important to review your Will regularly to reflect any major life changes. In these situations the help of an expert solicitor is most advisable as they will be able to inform you of exactly what changes may be necessary to update your Will. Please read on for a comprehensive list of solicitors, who are specialists in Will writing.

L A N LU M A Bum Lift & Cellulite Treatment

Get results comparable to buttock surgery with minimal risk and downtime. This amazing injectable activates your own natural collagen deep within your skin to create volume where you want it most. Lanluma is suitable for adults of all ages. You will get beautifully natural looking results - injectable PLLA, Lanluma’s main ingredient, provides results that last more than two years (J Am Acad Dermal 2010;62:448-62). It promises a gradual continuous improvement in both volume and skin texture as your treatment plan progresses and your natural collagen is stimulated. Lanluma’s main ingredient poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) has been used in medicine for over 30 years for everything from dissolvable stitches to treating scars.
