YEARS OF PIONEERING FUTURES
As we commemorate our 125th anniversary, we reflect on our past as we pave the way for our future. Please join us in celebrating this significant milestone and our remarkable accomplishments.
Back in 1898, John Passmore Edwards, a philanthropist from the Victorian era, laid our foundation stone with the belief that education should be accessible to all. He believed this should include the workingclass community, young women, and those who were previously excluded from all learning opportunities. Despite the changes that have taken place over the past 125 years, our dedication to providing practical and career-oriented education in the east London community has never wavered.
We have overcome numerous challenges, including a devastating fire and two world wars, whilst still inspiring our students to make meaningful contributions to the world. We have also conducted pioneering research and transformed our curriculum through the decades. Throughout our history, our alumni and academics have been exceptional role models. They have given back to their communities and are continuously setting a powerful example for future generations. As an inclusive university, we remain committed to helping everyone achieve their career aspirations and ambitions.

Flexibility is key
Jacqueline knew taking on a Master’s degree would be a big commitment. She needed to find a university that could help her achieve her goals, but also understand that she would still be working full-time.

Building a community
Jacqueline is now the vice chair of our Alumni Advisory Board. Launched in 2018, the board aims to strengthen the sense of community among our alumni. She's helping remind graduates of the various networks available and ways to give back to current students.

MEET JOAN CRIMINOLOGY GRADUATE & COUNTERTERRORISM EXPERT
Right course, right location
Joan felt she needed to study a Master's degree to take the next step in her career, so she applied for a course at another university, but felt it wasn’t quite the right fit for her goals.
When she found out about our postgraduate criminology course, she realised it was one of the best around. The University of East London was also local to where she lived, which meant it was an easy decision for her to join our postgraduate community.
From postgraduate study to promotion
After graduating from the University of East London, Joan secured a position as an emergency planning manager for the London Underground. More recently, she’s proud to have been promoted to contingency planning manager. In her role, she scrutinises transport plans and has to be extremely mindful that acts of terrorism could happen anytime, anywhere in London.
Giving back to the University of East London
The University of East London made a big impact on Joan’s life. Not only is she part of our alumni community, she’s chair of the Alumni Advisory Board. She’s eager to work with us to encourage our graduates to give back by sharing their experiences and expertise.

With campuses in Stratford and the Royal Albert Dock, we’re at the heart of it all. Global businesses are making the area their base and the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf create a brilliant backdrop. Because industry in the area is connected to the rest of the world, so are we.
There’s plenty of choice in London, but you won’t find anywhere like the University of East London. Nowhere else quite matches us for a unique sense of community.

ENGINEERING
Engineering underpins our lives. It’s in the cities we live in, the transport networks we use and the power we generate. It’s everywhere and it’s always evolving.
Engineers need strong technical skills, must be excellent problem solvers and need to work as part of a team. At the University of East London, we’ll ensure that your technical skills are exceptional and you graduate with the soft skills employers want. We have recognised that the world of engineering is changing and sustainability is an increasingly important factor in engineering projects, which is something we have incorporated into our courses.
If you’re looking to take the first steps towards achieving chartered engineer status or looking to improve your skills and knowledge to gain broader employment prospects then a Master’s in engineering will set you on the right track.

Our Engineering courses are co-designed and delivered in liaison with industry, via our Industry Advisory Board. Our Civil and Structural Engineering MSc courses are fully accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM).
