Falls Residents - There is so much to be excited about here in Little Falls. In the upcoming weeks, the Little Falls Streetscape project which was funded by grants will be underway, beautifying our downtown in time for the holidays. While continuing to make these improvements, we are keeping taxes more stable than ever thanks to the new rateables coming on line, while moving Little Falls forward in a way that stops the deterioration of our older properties, keeping our town affordable for years to come. The Council and I are proud to continue to provide incredible services to the municipality, without the residents bearing the burden of these costs.
With winter approaching, I would like to remind residents to stay safe and warm, and have a wonderful holiday season. Remember, on the cold days of winter, stay warm at one of our warming stations, including the library or the rec center during the day.
If there is ever anything that I can do for you, I encourage you to reach out to me at any time by phone at 973-818-1790 or by email at jdamiano@lfnj.com.
Holiday season party planning is rapidly ramping up, and Little Falls’ favorite Casa Arturo Bistro is more than ready this year.
The bistro recently took over an adjacent space, which had also been a restaurant, and is now able to offer an additional party room, with a 40-50 person capacity, said Casa Arturo’s Arturo. One major advantage of the new addition is that two kitchens are available for food preparation, ensuring that party fare will be served promptly and efficiently— all while maintaining the restaurant’s ongoing commitment to being “a place where you can feel you are at home while eating out.”
As usual, Casa Arturo will offer special holiday menus for in-person dining, catering, and parties at the bistro. Those who would rather dine out on Thanksgiving are in luck. The restaurant will be open, and offering a range of options. Check in on social media to see menu updates. (Hint: the pumpkins have already arrived.)
Christmas parties can be made easy and festive by booking early, said Arturo. with extensive catering items to choose from, such as appetizers Prince Edward Mussels or Prosciutto and Melon, and entrees Sole Vino Bianco or Grandma’s Pulled Pork. For in-house parties, both buffet-style and sit-down menus are available, all of which include salad/appetizer, choice of entrees, and
nonalcoholic beverages. The restaurant can also accommodate special dietary requests, Arturo said, with advance notice and an additional fee.
Holiday office parties are another Casa Arturo catering speciality, but again, Morocho strongly advises booking preferred dates early. With many more people back at the office, this year’s party season will undoubtedly be busy.

AtCedar Grove Foot in Cedar Grove, Matthew Wachtler, DPM, FACFAS, believes that preventative foot care can eliminate or control many foot problems. One common foot problem that responds well to preventative treatments is diabetic foot care. Diabetes is a disease of the body that can impact numerous body parts, including the eyes, kidneys, and feet. Nerve damage and circulation issues are side effects of uncontrolled diabetes.
Fortunately, regular foot care may alleviate or prevent diabetic foot problems. Ailments, including delayed wound healing, blisters, cuts, and bruises, may occur, if untreated. The worst cases may require amputation of the foot.
Dr. Wachtler recommends an annual foot care examination. “Conditions may require more frequent visits. Regular treatment of nails, calluses, and corns can prevent significant side effects from these conditions,” he says.

JohnSass, broker owner of CENTURY 21 Cedarcrest Realty, Inc. believes that ongoing, in-house professional development and sales training are critical components to real estate success. To that end, he has brought Manuela “Mannie” Rodriguez to the Cedarcrest Realty team as its director of growth and career development. Mannie joined the brokerage in early September.
In her role, she recruits new real estate agents and oversees their training and professional development. Cedarcrest Realty has offices in Caldwell and Little Falls, which are overseen by broker associate Lynn De Luccia. The brokerage has added several new associates since Mannie came on board.
“I’m looking forward to helping John bring renewed energy and excitement to our team, and discover motivated talent out there that wants to become part of the CENTURY 21® system,” she said. “I am very lucky to do what I am passionate about every day and lead our agents to success as a partner who motivates and provides the skills and support they need to run a successful and productive real estate business.”
Mannie has nearly 20 years of experience as a real estate agent, trainer, recruiter, and office manager, with prior experience in college admissions. She has developed coaching programs and one-on-one training for real estate agents, created programs to elevate performance standards and team productivity, and has a proven track record of increasing sales revenue and client acquisition. She plans to network at area chambers of commerce and other business associations as part of her business development activities.
“We are seeking motivated people who are passionate about customer service and satisfaction to join our team,” said John. “Agents at all experience levels will benefit from working with Mannie, and those who are new to real estate get valuable hands-on assistance from our field trainer, Jill Savva.”

Mannie Rodriguez (standing), with Cedarcrest Realty agents (left-right) Ronnie Murillo, Carol Berry, Ashley Lawson and Joseph Zigarelli (Left-right) Mannie Rodriguez Broker with owner John J. Sass and broker associate Lynn De LucciaHaving troubles with balance, seeking relief from an injury or undergoing post-surgical rehabilitation? The therapists at Paragon Physical Therapy help clients to restore balance, decrease pain, restore mobility, and ensure independence. Katherine Cwiklinski, PT, DPT, and owner, says clients often do not realize they have a balance problem until they fall and get injured while performing simple tasks, such as reaching overhead, bending over, or getting out of a bath tub. “Having good balance is important,” Cwiklinski says, “because it helps to prevent falls and resultant injuries.”
Developing Better Balance Balance exercises are therefore part of all physical therapy programs at Paragon. The company is considered a premier practice for vestibular training, which addresses that part of the inner ear that controls balance and is associated with disorders including dizziness, vertigo, and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo or BPPV. People commonly start losing vestibular function in their sixties. Training this system improves balance and allows for independence when walking or performing daily tasks.
Older people are more motivated to address balance problems due to fear of falling and having a greater risk of sustaining a fracture—and they want to maintain their independence. For them, an individualized Balance Therapy program addresses balance and walking skills. “Balance is key to avoiding a fall that leads to greater problems such as fractures in the legs, arms, and hips, Cwiklinski says. “And balance can be retrained to maintain functional independence.”
Clients often do not realize they have a balance problem until they fall and get injured while performing simple tasks.Katherine Cwiklinski
But balance training benefits people of all ages. An injured high school athlete, for instance, may start training on a flat surface, progressing to the uneven surface of foam pads to relearn balance. To eliminate the fear of falling, especially for older people who use a cane or a walker, a safety harness secured to an overhead rail is used for training. The goal is to retrain the brain to be aware of balance while safely navigating surfaces. Training in this more independent manner, rather than the traditional method in which a therapist holds a patient, allows them to recognize when they are about to fall and learn how to prevent it. And clients rehab more quickly.
Paragon offers an orthopedic rehab program that helps with lower back pain, sports injuries, knee and hip replacements, auto accident injuries, neurological and many other conditions and problems as well.
“We also instruct our patients on proper body mechanics and how to squat, lift, and correct body posture to prevent injury.” Cwiklinski adds, “Physical therapy has the power to heal without the need for medications.” Additionally, Paragon offers electrical stimulation and ultrasound treatments for pain relief and muscle relaxation, soft tissue/joint mobilization, and stretching instruction.
Paragon Physical Therapy, formerly known as FYZICAL, is a privately-owned
practice that has operated in Little Falls, NJ, for more than 11 years, in that time helping the community to be healthy and achieve its functionality goals. Cwiklinski describes the Paragon “Perfection in Motion” program as innovative in its approach to physical therapy, with its main focus on achieving optimal health and wellness. Whether your goal is to be independent with walking in the community, negotiating stairs and curbs, navigating post-surgery, or getting back to a favorite sport, Paragon can help you reach it.

If you suffer from chronic pain or persistent health issues then acupuncture for pain relief is a great alternative or complement to conventional medicine. One of the many benefits of acupuncture is that it can be undertaken at the same time that other treatment modalities and medications are being used. It is easily integrated into and used with conventional medicine.
Acupuncture treats your body as a whole rather than as a symptom. Acupuncture promotes the body’s natural healing ability, therefore having little to no side effects. If your body feels out of balance, you lack energy, feel stressed all the time, or suffer from mental or physical pain, then acupuncture for health can help you regain balance and an overall sense of well-being.
Some conditions that acupuncture treats: lower back pain, sciatic nerve pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, knee pain and headaches. Dr. Margaret Amireh, DACM, L.Ac is an accredited and board certified Acupuncturist with experience treating over 250 conditions.

Van Der Wende Properties has remained steadfast throughout 40 years of booms and slumps in the real estate industry. The agency has been recognized as the top selling real estate company in the Passaic Valley area for 36 years, including the past 31 consecutive years.
continued on the next page
Founder Bob Van Der Wende says there are three critical elements to the agency’s enduring success. “The first is our attention to details, and a normal real estate transaction has hundreds of details to complete. Another is our outstanding staff, sales representatives and management team. Our agents are called upon to be proficient in all aspects of a transaction including marketing, social media, home market analysis, client counseling and negotiation. The third element is our association with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. The marketing power and public awareness of the Berkshire Hathaway brand has allowed us to serve all segments of the real estate market.”
Van Der Wende works with agents who have continually excelled for decades, and he now sees younger agents who wish to pursue the unlimited growth opportunities a career in real estate offers. “Agents assist each other daily, each learning from the other. We have a state-of-the-art training system for newer and veteran agents administered by Paul Crosta, Director of Education/Sales Manager. This allows agents to take their careers to new heights.”
Van Der Wende makes special mention of two agents, Lisa Tomasella and John P. Reilly, Jr., who have reached the pinnacle of their careers. They have tapped into their knowledge and expertise to achieve outstanding results. With a deeply ingrained clients first approach to transactions, they have helped guide newer agents on the path to achieving the same success.
In addition, Rob Van Der Wende and Alexa Benavente combined their years of experience to form one of North Jersey’s top selling teams. They
are Platinum Level recipients of the NAR Circle of Excellence Award and Chairman’s Circle Diamond Level, awarded to the top one percent of agents worldwide. Benavente says, “There is a tremendous amount of information that buyers and sellers can access 24/7, which is great, especially the ability to search properties and to evaluate real estate firms and agents. The challenge for buyers and sellers is that actual transactions have a greater degree of difficulty and are much more detailed. It’s imperative to find an outstanding real estate agent who will assist and guide you through the process.”
Van Der Wende, who founded the agency in 1980 with four agents states, “Technology has certainly brought about many changes in our business that have assisted the consumer and those working in the industry. What hasn’t changed is the need for human interaction to keep communication open and to be able to serve the needs of the client. For more than 40 years we have worked hard to earn the trust and continued support of the community and we are always available to help.”

is well-known for its hair services throughout the tri-state area and beyond. Expert cuts, color, and styling are complemented by highly trained professionals and a fivestar customer experience. But, a little known, yet critical aspect of the salon is its extensive future professional training program.
Gerald Ferraro, founder/owner of Shag86, and Tom Harris, Artistic Director of Education recruit budding stylists to join their education program, in which they receive state-of-the-art training and mentorship from established professionals.
“My family has been in the industry for 60 years, and I’ve been in it for 28 years.
I have a passion to really guide the up-and-coming generation in the right direction,” said Ferraro. “Graduating from cosmetology school is just the first step. We take them from the newest level, and develop them into someone who is going to last 30 years in the industry and reach incomes they could never believe. In the end our stylists feel the training was well worth it in becoming a skilled professional that will take their career to a higher level.”
Harris, whose credentials also include Master Associate with John Paul Mitchell Systems, personally mentors and teaches the interns in the program.
Weekly 2.5-hour classes led by Harris are interactive, with demonstrations only making up a part of the lesson.
“After a demonstration, each intern is sent to their mannequins where they have to perform the haircut. While they’re cutting, I’m walking the room and redirecting them when things are’t correct–their hand position is off, their body position is off. What makes
us different is that aspect of mentorship, and that’s where the learning takes place.”
Ferraro and Harris are looking for “serious-minded professionals who want to go the extra mile to be great,” explained Harris. Currently, the rising stars of Shag86 include two recent graduates to first level, Brandon Brindisi and Samantha Moore; one who is currently in the middle of the program, Melisa Ozdemir; and three up-and-coming stylists, Vianna Giordano, Brianna Doran and Mimi Pastrana.
“The last stage of the training program is when the intern gets their own chair, and they can cut, color, and style, and it’s at a lesser price to the client. And it opens up the ability for them to work on live people, and it’s all guided by me,” said Harris.
“They can’t do a haircut, color, without telling me what they’re doing and what technique they’re going to use. It’s also reaching people that maybe would like to try being a model to these young stylists, knowing they're getting a great haircut overseen by the artistic director.”

TheNew Jersey Jackals, a member team of the Frontier League, a Professional Baseball League of 16 teams and Partner League of Major League Baseball (MLB), today announced the team is relocating from Yogi Berra Stadium in Montclair, to its new, larger home at landmark Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson.
The Jackals will kick-off a 96-game season in May of 2023 at Hinchliffe, a 7,000-seat stadium that sits on a dramatic escarpment above Paterson’s National Historic Great Falls and surrounded by the city’s national historic district – the first planned industrial settlement in the nation in 1792. Hinchliffe is also one of two remaining ballparks where the segregated Negro Leagues played in the mid-20th century. The facility lay dormant for the past 20+ years but is now undergoing a dramatic restoration.
Al Dorso, the owner, and operator of the New Jersey Jackals, along with the city of Paterson, have exciting plans to improve the Hinchliffe field and venue, align with local businesses and bring additional entertainment to the venue, such as concerts, kids camps, traveling teams, training and exhibitions, holiday events and more. The stadium improvements are part of a larger $95 million project that includes a parking garage, restaurant with museum and nearby residential complex.
“We’re thrilled to have the Jackals in Paterson and equally pleased to be working alongside Al Dorso, a visionary, change agent and proven businessman with the leadership, acumen and experience to bring additional growth, prosperity and entertainment to our local community,” said Andre Sayegh, Mayor of Paterson.
“I was born and raised in Paterson and even though I ventured on, I still know this town like the back of my hand and have many fond memories,” said Dorso, “This is a great opportunity at the right time in my life to give back and add to the rich history of this region.

with a smaller community bank can often bring big benefits. When customers need a question answered or have a request, they can just call the local branch and speak with an actual person who can help. There’s no need to call an 800 number and speak with someone halfway around the world.
“Dealing with a community bank and establishing relationships gives our customers peace of mind,” says Claudia DeLaCruz, the branch manager of BCB Bank’s Fairfield location. “They have direct access to us.”
This local institution also offers a wide variety of services. “We provide all the services that any commercial small bank would provide—checking accounts, savings accounts, Christmas clubs, vacation clubs and more,” she says. “For business owners, we provide cash management services, so they have the ability to do ACH wire transfers, allow access to people who are not authorized signers on those accounts, remove access when warranted, as well as Bill Pay, which is available for personal accounts as well.”
Claudia also says their customers save money by banking with BCB. “We’re not charging them maintenance fees. Our checking accounts are free. Our business accounts are free. We focus on relationships, not fees.”
With interest rates on the rise, she says it’s a good time to invest in Certificates of Deposit (CDs). “BCB is very well known for its CD rates. We’ve also been offering a fixed-rate 24-month unsecured line of credit for business owners, and it’s easy to qualify.”

Passaic Valley welcomed their students and school community back with a bang—Many new changes and major projects took place over the summer, and they continue to build positive momentum as they continue to see a large influx of transfer students and an increase in enrollment for the freshmen class. Passaic Valley is proud to officially be a part of the “1:1 Chromebook program” where every student has their own school-provided Chromebook assigned to them.
They have expanded their Dual Enrollment program where they partner with local universities allowing students to earn college credits while attending class at PV. Superintendent, Dr. Healy can not stress enough that if students “put in the work, they will reap the benefits!”—
The academic programs have prepared students for the most prestigious universities. Last year they had graduates attending Harvard, Cornell, Brown, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, Fordham, RPI, Stevens Institute of Technology, George Washington, NYU, and Vassar.
Back In August, the Board of Education approved a Partnership between PV and Tutor.com. Students will now have free access to a professional tutor, 24/7 with the click of a few buttons (3000+ tutors, 250+ subjects, ranging from the lowest levels all the way up to AP). This
new partnership is an absolute game changer for students who have busy schedules balancing academics, sports and clubs. Speaking of game changers, the award-winning Fine and Performing Arts program is receiving a beautiful theater this year. Auditorium renovations including new seating, carpeting, tiling, lighting, and sound are underway. The building itself shines brighter this year! An Energy Improvement project was completed over the summer months, including $2.1 million in lighting and ventilation upgrades funded by the federal government. The installation of the new turf field and track renovation was completed right in time for the start of Fall Sports in September. It was a historical moment for the Passaic County District on Friday, September 2, 2022. The first ever game on turf was played under the bright lights at Walton Field. Nearly 1,800 spectators packed the house and created an electric atmosphere. The football team delivered a resounding 34-14, the cheerleaders were incredible and the marching band rocked the house debuting their new uniforms.
“None of this would be possible without the support of our students, staff, and families. We will continue to make you proud to be part of the green and white community. We can proudly say that Hornet Pride is back!” - Dr. Healy
Aster-McKenna, Psy.D, a licensed clinical psychologist, views the therapeutic process as a journey, one that leads to healing and selfdiscovery. “I work with patients to explore their feelings, thoughts and physical sensations, and how they influence their behavior,” she says.
Among the behavioral issues Dr. Aster-McKenna treats are trauma, grief, addiction, anxiety and major life changes. At the root of her treatment approach is acceptance and commitment therapy—meaning patients are guided to take action and be an active participant in their lives. “Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional,” she notes. The treatment modality is evidence-based and effective. The goal is to shift behavior in ways that are useful and workable, and to move away from what is not as workable and, perhaps, harmful.
She is a psychologist that treats adults and older adolescents. “I am committed to helping clients maximize their emotional and psychological strength. I believe therapy can help foster individuals to be more than just ‘okay’.”

Thereare plenty of methods to achieve better sleeping habits, and one of the most potent methods is nutritional. A healthy diet can mean the difference between peaceful slumber and sleepless nights.
Lack of sleep can prompt you to start making bad dietary decisions. This relationship works in reverse. Having a proper intake of a wide variety of vitamins and minerals has been shown to improve sleep quality. If you’re missing a key vitamin or other nutrients, you may start to have issues sleeping.
Why is this? Studies are still being done on this, but we do know that sleep is closely related to the complex chemistry in our brain. We also know that getting the right vitamins and minerals improves the function of that brain chemistry— therefore a bad diet can lead to you feeling gross not just physically, but mentally. Our brain releases certain chemicals when it’s time to sleep to help us drift off. If we’re missing the important components of those chemicals, our brain is going to struggle to properly turn itself off and rest. And a brain without rest is going to be an unhappy brain.
Conversely, diets that are too high in carbs may make you feel drowsy during the day but can ruin your sleep when night rolls around. And we all know what diets that are too heavy in sugar and caffeine can do to you—these substances are some of the worst offenders when it comes to ruining sleep schedules. juice cleanses tend to be so great for helping sleep.
The best diets for sleep are those that are filled with fruits and vegetables (and all those amazing vitamins contained within). Not only does a blended juice cleanse ensure you’re getting a wide range of veggies, but the fact that they are raw means that fewer of those key sleep vitamins have been removed in the prep process. This means your brain is getting everything it needs for a proper shutdown.
Blended juice cleanses are also a great way to give your body a break from carbs, sugar, and caffeine, so you don’t need to worry about any of these substances playing havoc with your ability to get some shuteye. Blended juice cleanses are a great way to feel energetic and focused during the day, and still, get plenty of sleep at night.

Total Recovery PT PC in Little Falls uses a multidisciplinary approach to pain and injury. According to Dr. Jack Zuckerman, PT, owner, “we look at the entire body in a systematic way regardless of the condition you’re coming in with in order to determine the root cause of the problem. Very commonly, pain in one part of the body is the cause of a problem in another part of the body.”
The Little Falls team includes five physical therapists, three acupuncturists, a chiropractor, patient care coordinators, and an office manager. The practitioners may treat various ailments through physical therapy, acupuncture, and chiropractic care. “We use evidencebased treatments as an alternative to surgery. Successful treatment begins with a thorough examination to find the root cause of the problem. Once that is determined, we formulate a specific treatment plan catered to the patient. The outcomes from this approach result in better and faster recovery,” Dr. Zuckerman states. When determining a course of action, patients get an individualized program which can encompass one or more of these modalities, focusing on eliminating pain and restoring mobility of the affected area.
Physical therapists are movement specialists who observe how the body interacts with the general environment. They use manual therapy (also known as a hands-on approach) and prescribe specific corrective exercises based on the patient’s need to strengthen dormant or inefficient muscles. The spine is the body’s foundation and getting the spine in proper alignment and movement are paramount to recovery. Commonly, physical therapists will work with the chiropractor to realign the spine and the body’s foundation. They focus on postural analysis and use their hands, tools, and traction table to help align the spine better.
For patients experiencing a lot of pain, acupuncture is an excellent way to helps alleviate pain and tight muscles quickly and effectively. Acupuncturists also use a number of techniques including cupping, trigger point dry needling, and massage to treat a variety of conditions such as headaches, aching muscles, and joints and many other common conditions.
In addition to these manual treatments, Total Recovery is equipped with cutting edge, state-of-the-art technology to accelerate the healing process. These
devices increase the blood flow to the injured area thus decreasing recovery time. The first device, Radial Pressure Wave Therapy (“Shock Wave”), is a handheld device that heals different tissue injuries by resetting the body’s healing cycle.
Another device is called Class IV Deep Tissue Laser therapy. It is a computerized hand-held device that transmits infrared light to penetrate deep tissues to decrease pain, inflammation, and promote overall tissue healing. “We are one of the few medical facilities in New Jersey that has this device. Professional athletes use this device for healing routinely, but now it is accessible to our patients here in Little Falls,” states Dr. Zuckerman. This device works very well as an ancillary tool for conditions like arthritis, post-surgery, or chronic pain. It has been shown to cut the healing process down in half the time when combined with physical therapy.
“Total Recovery’s mission is simple. We want to provide our community with patient centered quality care and get you back to doing the things you love.”

Routineseasonal maintenance on your HVAC system ensures it works at its most energy-efficient level and performs as expected. This also saves money by revealing potential problems to address before they become emergencies or cause a breakdown.
A routine HVAC check includes changing filters and humidifier pads, ensuring vents aren’t blocked, and checking for rust on metal flue pipes. Additionally, the technician will clear drains, burner tubes and other elements, inspect connections, check the motor and thermostat functionality, monitor refrigerant pressure (air conditioning), test safety controls, and lubricate moving parts.
Don’t wait too far into the season to maintain your HVAC system. It is especially important now to book fall checkup appointments because supply chain disruptions may cause delays in getting needed parts.

Fisk, owner of Watts Up Electrical
says fall and winter are the best times
because since it gets darker earlier, recessed
will be used more often as people spend more time indoors. Recessed lighting brightens up rooms better than center lighting and lamps and is a great asset to any room. In addition, it uses led bulbs, which means it draws less electricity. Rich says that doing a retrofit to existing recessed lighting is a great idea for those looking to be more energy efficient and have a modern lighting scheme. “Recessed lighting is great overall,” says Rich. “It lights up rooms evenly, you can install a dimmer, and it will last for many years.”
