Our clients and associates know they can reach us to solve whatever issues are important to them. “There is no question that our success is a direct result of the hard work, loyalty and compassion for our clients that our agents practice daily,” he avows. Dr. Faith Mogila “We are able to offer hearing aids at a much more competitive rate than a private practice due to the fact that we’re a training institution,” says Dr. Faith Mogila, clinic director. “Also, when you go to a private practice, the audiologist typically works with only one or two different manufacturers, whereas we work with eight, which really allows us to find what’s best for all of our patients.” Dr. Mogila finds helping the patients improve their quality of life while at the same time teaching her students to do the same for future patients is incredibly rewarding. “We’re providing a a necessary service for the community,” says Dr. Mogila.

A PATIENT-CENTERED APPROACH By Christine S. Maxwell, photo by Dan Epstein

D

r. Raffaele Lagonigro, PT, has a vision for his physical therapy practice. He wants to provide quality physical therapy for patients in the Passaic Valley area. In 2018, his dream came true when he established AIM Orthopedics: Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine in Little Falls. With a thriving practice, Lagonigro and two other full-time therapists treat a variety of ailments for all ages. AIM’s patients range in age from high school students to senior citizens. Although each age group may have unique needs, everyone’s treatment contains a common purpose. “From pain and injury, getting patients back to a healthy, active lifestyle is our goal,” states Lagonigro. Many of the injuries patients present involve the spine, neck, back, shoulders, and knees. Studentathletes frequently have these injuries. For the elderly population, the goal may be to improve balance and strength so that these individuals can perform their daily tasks. Recently, AIM has partnered with a women’s health therapist for pelvic and obstetric physical therapy issues. Lagonigro believes that his physical therapy practice has a unique approach to patient care. After evaluating the patient, the physical therapists establish an individualized care plan with oneon-one care. AIM therapists typically have lower caseloads than other practices and spend more time with patients. “We look for an approach that has the best outcomes,” states Lagonigro. “Often, we follow a multi-modal approach to treatment that includes hands-on manual treatment and proscribed strength and exercise programs.” AIM ’s approach also includes making an extremely comfortable, inviting environment for the patients, one in which the patient feels protected with the best quality care. Helping people understand the recovery process is paramount, and frequently that involves letting the patients heal emotionally and physically. “We spend time easing people’s fears. We understand the road to recovery and guide them along the way,” says Lagonigro. “We believe that our positive, comfortable, and welcoming approach to recovery helps people get better faster,” adds Lagonigro.

rturo Morocho, owner of Casa Arturo Bistro in Little Falls, loves creating fine cuisine. But he also enjoys serving exquisitely prepared meals to his loyal and appreciative customers. On April 17, 2022, Casa Arturo Bistro recently celebrated its fifth anniversary, despite the past few years of the pandemic. Offering superb food contributes to the restaurant’s success, but Morocho credits his wonderful customers as the backbone of the restaurant. “The customers’ word of mouth in supporting our restaurant with positive reviews and recommendations helped our restaurant survive critical times. We would not be where we are today without our good customers,” says Morocho. Casa Arturo Bistro specializes in continental Italian cuisine from all regions in Italy. The restaurant offers a standard menu and focuses on homestyle cooking with a creative flair. The chefs add seasonal touches for enhanced flavors: artichokes make the best salads; appetizers use seasonal selections, pumpkin-inspired platters flourish in the fall, and zucchini offerings abound in the spring and summer. There is a list of homemade deserts including cheesecake, flan, ricotta cake, and bread pudding. Chef Walter Reinoso and Arturo Morocho

The restaurant also utilizes the considerable talents of family members. Morocho’s mother and sister assist him in the kitchen, preparing fresh pasta, such as gnocchi, from scratch. Morocho is also an involved team member doing whatever it takes to ensure the restaurant’s smooth operations. “I am a multi-tasker,” he says. “Whatever I need to do, I do. I do everything from cooking, dishwashing, bussing, and waiting on tables. That is how much I care for our business.” Casa Arturo Bistro is open Tuesday through Sunday, with lunch and dinner served on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. There is a separate lunch menu during the week and an early bird Spring 2022

menu for dinner on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 4–6pm. Guests select dinner choices on Saturday and Sunday. For added ambiance in the warmer weather of spring, summer, and early fall, diners may enjoy their meals on the Outdoor Patio. Customers may also opt for private parties with selected fares at Casa Arturo Bistro. Customers enjoy memorable events in the main dining room on Saturdays and Sundays in elegant surroundings.

B

uying a house, whether as a first-timer or as an experienced homeowner, is a complex and often stressful process. Partners Matthew DiBrino and John Fornino of HQM Loans in Fairfield have made it their company’s mission to ensure each client is educated about the process, has the best options made available to them, and receives prompt, informed customer service.

“A lot has changed in a short amount of time. In my 20 plus years of experience, I can honestly say that I have not seen a market like this one.” John Fornino, President, and Co-Founder remarked when asked about the current state of the Real Estate Market. “There is a whole lot of uncertainty, not only in our market, but also in the world. Rates are rising, and there is an extreme shortage of homes on the market. That is why there are hundreds of people lining up at open houses in this area,” he added. While it is true, a lot has changed, HQM Loans’s pillars of success have not. “We are family first, followed by loyalty and integrity, work ethic, results, and relationships,” Matthew D. DiBrino, Co-Founder and CEO, stated. “Everything we do starts with a family atmosphere. Our staff at HQM Loans has become one big family. When you genuinely love the people, you work with, it shows in the product,” DiBrino continued. (continued on the next page)

Integrity, Fast Response — and Lifelong Connections (continued from the previous page)

“Loyalty and integrity are by far the most underrated attributes a company can have, especially in today’s ever-changing environment. We always stay true to who we are. Our integrity is unwavering, and our loyalty to our clients and real estate partners is unmatched. Our mission statement is, Where You Get Your Mortgage from Matters, and I think that resonates with all parts of a real estate transaction.” “Work ethic and results kind of go hand in hand. We live by a few different mantras in this office. For one, no one will outwork us… period. We leave no stone unturned in any given scenario. It does not matter what day of the week it is, or what time it is, if our clients or partners need us, we are always there to service them. We also believe that there are no problems—only solutions. When an issue arises, we hit it straight on and look to solve it collectively. We are relentless until we have multiple solutions.” DiBrino said. “The team energy in this office is really quite unique.” DiBrino and Fornino, who, combined, have decades of experience in the home finance business, are able to give clients access to 100 different lending partners, who offer multiple types of loans to suit each individual situation, including 30-year fixed rate, FHA, first-time

buyers, and VA. HQM Loans’s 24-hour approval process results in a full, not provisional pre-approval for loans, enabling buyers to quickly make solid, attractive offers on the homes they’ve chosen—vital during a time of low inventory. The secure application process can be done easily online or in-person. So how can HQM Loans help in this cr azy market? The educational part of the relationship involves complete honesty about the whole process. “We tell the client that they have to fall in love with the monthly payment before they fall in love with the house,” remarked DiBrino. With rising rates, affordability is going to lower, so it is important to get a grasp of where you are,” Fornino said. DiBrino continued, “As a company, we are going to stay true to what has gotten us this far. Integrity and loyalty to our clients comes first. HQM Loans remains involved in the community recently donating a 20-foot scoreboard to the Wayne Boys PAL, which is their second scoreboard donation.

ounded in 1963, Montclair Cooperative School has been a leader in progressive education for the past 58 years. The Co-op keeps children at the center of school life, engages parents in their children’s education, and guides students in their personal growth and excellence. The school’s mission is to educate the whole child by meeting each child where they are, and ensuring each child feels seen and heard. They create a nurturing and diverse environment, where children grow and flourish intellectually, emotionally and socially. The development of social-emotional skills is an integral part of the Co-op, where children learn how to negotiate, resolve conflicts and advocate for themselves and others. Co-op teachers create a deep and personal connection with students, planning curriculum that will stretch each child in academics, the arts, and social skills. At the heart of the Co-op’s success is the sense of community. Parents are partners in their children’s education, and participate in many aspects of Co-op life such as assisting in their child’s classroom, lending time and talent through a family job, fundraising, or serving on a committee. Finding the right school takes time and great care. Keeping children engaged in their learning encourages them to be creative with their education - no matter the format. Improve Your Balance at FYZICAL By Cynthia Burns, photos by Dan Epstein

F

YZICAL® Therapy & Balance Centers strives to transform sick care to well care. Whether seeking relief from an injury or undergoing postsurgical rehabilitation, the therapists at FYZICAL help clients to decrease pain, restore mobility and ensure independence. Katherine Cwiklinski, PT, DPT, OCS and owner of the Center, says clients often do not realize they have a balance problem until they have a fall and get injured while performing simple daily tasks, such as reaching overhead, bending over, or getting into or out of a bath tub. “Having good balance is important because it helps to prevent falls and injuries that can result from them.”

At FYZICAL®, exercises to improve balance are incorporated into all physical therapy (PT) programs. Developing better balance centers on strengthening muscles as well as correcting faulty body mechanics. Cwiklinski explains that it is a process of retraining muscles, the vestibular system (inner ear) and the somatosensory system, which is responsible for telling the brain where our bodies are in space. Balance training is beneficial for all ages, from young athletes to the elderly population. For instance, an injured high school athlete may start balance exercises on a flat surface, progressing to foam pads that offer an uneven surface. Older clients, especially those who use a cane or walker, go through their PT paces strapped into a safety harness secured

to an overhead rail eliminating any fear of falling. The idea is to retrain the brain to be cognizant of balance while navigating any surface safely. Without the fear of falling, clients can rehab quicker than the traditional method where a therapist continuously holds a person to prevent them from falling. Training more independently will allow the patient’s brain to recognize when they are about to fall and, with the therapist’s help, learn how to prevent this from happening. Cwiklinski notes that older patients in particular are committed to improving their balance. “Older people are more focused because they want to maintain their independence. They are driven by the fear of falling and a greater risk of sustaining a fracture.” FYZICAL® offers a comprehensive and individualized Balance Therapy program, which are recommended for people who have had several falls in a short amount of time. The program addresses balance and walking skills. FYZICAL® is considered a premier practice for vestibular training, which includes the part of the inner ear that helps to control balance and is associated with disorders including dizziness, vertigo and BPPV, which stands for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. To underscore the attention having good balance deserves, Cwiklinski notes that it is common for people to have a loss of vestibular function beginning in their sixties. Given that, it is important to train the vestibular

Katherine Cwiklinski, DPT system in elderly patients in order to improve balance, so they can maintain independence during daily tasks and walking. FYZICAL® also offers an orthopedic rehab program. They deal with ankle sprains, neck and lower back pain, all types of sport injuries, knee and hip replacements, auto accidents, neurological issues and many others. In addition to the more specialized treatments and equipment, they perform common therapies such as electrical stimulation and ultrasound for pain relief and muscle relaxation, stretching, and soft tissue/joint mobilizations. The Center is part of a national franchise. Cwiklinski has owned FYZICAL®, formerly known as Paragon Physical Therapy, in Little Falls for eight years. She describes it as innovative in its approach to physical therapy, with its main focus on achieving optimal health and wellness so that you can get back to living the life you enjoy.

HVAC Systems Require Semi-Annual Maintenance

S

emi-annual maintenance by a certified HVAC technician protects your system by finding and fixing minor problems before they become costly repairs, and preps your air conditioning unit for peak performance and greater efficiency. Technicians should: check refrigerant lines for damage, measure refrigerant charge; change the air filters; clean the condenser coil, check suction line’s condition; clear vegetation or trash to enhance air flow; and clear out the drain system to avoid water damage, mold growth, or bacteria buildup. After your preseason maintenance is done, homeowners should perform these easy DIY tasks (turn off power first): Vacuum metal frame air filters monthly— soak clogged filters in a 50/50 water/vinegar mixture; clean out debris in condenser fins; hose down the external unit to clear dirt buildup; and cut back plants that block it. If you are considering an air conditioning upgrade, we have Carrier units in stock so you can avoid lengthy equipment back orders and price hikes. We offer flexible financing and installation discounts. Visit www.bloomfieldcooling. com for details on specials and our Comfort Club maintenance programs.

Fulfilling Dreams and Giving Back A Real-Estate Team Who’s Ready To Serve By Sue Baldani, photo by Dan Epstein

A

s Realtors® and co-owners of The Michael Schiff Team at Keller Williams NJ Metro Group, Michael Schiff and Tom Kazmark understand the importance of finding people their dream homes. After all, they are actually living in one of their own. “I grew up in Little Falls, and I remember my mom always saying what a gorgeous house this was,” says Tom. Also, Long Hill Road was one of the routes he would take to high school, so he passed by it all the time. “I’m a big fan of design and it’s a classic Dutch Colonial that is architecturally interesting.” Tom and Mike, who have been together for 32 years, were living in Montclair when they drove by 100 Long Hill Road and saw a for-sale sign in front of the house about 15 years ago. They had no intention of moving, but they called a friend who was an agent (they were still working in the corporate world at the time) to get a look. Three months later, they moved in. Buying the home, along with becoming real estate agents eight years ago, were great decisions for them both. Now, they say, they have more time to give back to their community. “It’s nice to have the flexibility where we can manage our time to volunteer,” says Tom. “I’m president of The Friends of the Little Falls Public Library and on the Board of Trustees of the Little Falls Historical Society.” Mike is the president of the Board of Trustees of the Little Falls Education Foundation, and both are members of the Passaic Valley Rotary Club. They are also sponsors of the Little Falls Athletic Club. Even with all that, they proudly report they’ve been the number one real estate team in Little Falls in terms of the dollar amount of transactions over the last five years. “One of the things we pride ourselves on as a team is working diligently to help people with the biggest investment they’ll probably ever undertake,” says Mike. “It’s so important to provide support and assistance to our clients as they navigate the process.” Angela Butler, who is the third member of The Michael Schiff Team as a Buyer’s Agent and volunteers as a Cheer Coach for the Junior Hornets.“It feels good and it’s just the right thing to do,” says Mike.

Fulfilling Dreams and Promises Montclair State Program Lets Returning Students Commit to Finishing Degrees They Started

C

hris Taite attended Montclair State University for three years before dropping out. He promised his father that he’d return to complete his undergraduate degree some day but financial commitments, work and life derailed his plans for years. Taite, 31, of Bayonne, is now working toward finishing his undergraduate degree through the University’s Degree Completion Program. Because the courses are online, it’s convenient and costeffective since students don’t have to pay fees. They can complete their degrees in as few as 18 months. Launched last fall, the program is designed for students 25 or older, with 60 transferable credits and at least a 2.0 GPA. Students can earn a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Humanities or Education Studies; other concentrations may be added in the future.

“Our main goal is to provide a pathway for adults who started college to return and earn their degree,” says Degree Completion Programs Assistant Director Jane Sanchez Swain. This program is perfect as it provides the fastest and most direct path to degree attainment. They can complete this degree in as little as 18 months.’’ When Taite left Montclair in 2012, he promised his father that one day he would return. Years went by and the idea took a back seat to work. “It was something that ate at me,” he says.

Chris Taite, a supervisor for Con Edison, has returned to Montclair to complete his bachelor’s degree, keeping a promise he made to his father that one day he would return.

While in college, Taite says, he wasn’t as focused as he needed to be and he didn’t fully avail himself of Montclair’s resources. This time, when the University asked him to return, he was prepared.

we’re ready for you,’” Taite says, smiling. “I go to school now, for me. I’ve enjoyed every moment of it.”

“At 17, 18, I wasn’t ready for Montclair, but at 30, Montclair reached out and said, ‘Hey

r. Matthew Wachtler knows all about “de agony of de feet.” He is an experienced podiatrist and Boardcertified foot surgeon specializing in both arthroscopic and reconstructive foot and ankle surgery, sports medicine, wound care and diabetic foot care. In addition to seeing patients in his Cedar Grove office, he is also on staff at both St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston and Overlook Medical Center in Summit. Dr. Wachtler is up to date on all the latest techniques and procedures used to treat foot pathologies. For example, laser surgery has been used on toenail fungus for over 10 years, but it has only recently been used to treat tendinitis, sprains and other soft-tissue injuries. He says, “The lasers themselves have changed over the past 20 years. They were originally used only to burn tissue; now they can be used along with physical therapy as treatment for soft tissue injuries.” He adds, “I really enjoy what I do; what my staff and I most enjoy is the connection we make with our patients.”

PASSAIC VALLEY REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 100 EAST MAIN STREET, LITTLE FALLS, NEW JERSEY 07424

Passaic Valley Regional High School Welcomes New Administration

Dr. Adam Christopher, Assistant Principal Dr. Christopher is a Passaic Valley Regional High School alum (‘06) who has spent the last ten years as a math teacher and varsity coach at Passaic County Technical Institute. His expertise in the field of STEM and CTE training will continue to help bolster our rich curriculum and academic programming here at Passaic Valley Regional High School.

Mr. Brack Healy, Superintendent Mr. Healy has been in education for fourteen years. He started his career as an English teacher at Bloomfield Tech High School before moving to Clifton Public Schools, where he served as an administrator for eight years. Prior to becoming an administrator, he coached three varsity sports, bringing to Passaic Valley a leadership style that is centered around teamwork, communication, and strong rapport. “The opportunity to lead such a wonderful school so deeply rooted in academic excellence and rich tradition is very humbling.”

Ms. Krista Voorhis, Vice Principal Ms. Voorhis is a Passaic Valley Regional High School alumna (‘99) and proud graduate of Montclair State University. She has been in education for eighteen years and is super excited to be “returning home to PV”. She grew up in Totowa, and now has two young children in the local school system. Ms. Voorhis brings with her passion and enthusiasm, and she is fully invested in the success of the district.

Passaic Valley Regional High School Modernizes Their Beautiful Campus By. Rae Allex The exciting new 2021-2022 school year began with welcoming students back into the building for a full-time, in-person learning experience without any disruption to their educational programs, clubs, student activities or athletic programs. The recent improvements to school facilities provide the entire school community with a high-quality and well-rounded educational experience. Some of the many facility upgrades include; fresh paint, new gymnasium floor, installation of window/wall decals, new “PV” trash receptacles, new landscaping and planted trees, new courtside chairs, and a new turf field with lights! Superintendent Healy believes that it is important for students to be a part of the positive culture being built at PV. On three separate nights, the staff, students, and community mem-

bers volunteered to help brighten the hallways with a fresh coat of paint. The purpose of the three day event was to encourage greater interaction with others who are committed to the school and reinforce a reason to be academically motivated. There was a huge outpour of support with over 150 volunteers for the project. The Griswold Gymnasium floor renovation project was introduced in September 2021, this new, state-ofthe-art home court, is designed to promote Hornet pride and tradition. “We use the “Gris” for so many events throughout our school year, such as sporting events, pep rallies, honor ceremonies, Girls’ Show and state level competitions. It is great to see work being done to bring the gym back to life” said Director of Athletics and Student Activities, Mr. Joseph Benvenuti.

On February 11, 2022, Administration, the Board of Education, and the Mayors of Little Falls, Totowa and Woodland Park officially broke ground on the new turf field and track project. In the past, the field would be unusable for days after rain. “The field is rendered useless and unavailable for weeks on end because of the mud that results from it,” Mr. Healy said. However, with a turf field, sports activities can be continued even after inclement weather. This year, more than ever before, Passaic Valley is dedicated to modernizing their beautiful campus! Attention to academic programming, student activities and facilities will continue to be a major focus as Passaic Valley moves into a new era. It’s an exciting time to be a Hornet!

VISIONS FCU Supports Key Community Organizations

L

ittle Falls loves its local coffee shop. It’s developed a reputation as a great place to grab a beverage or a bite. But Ethan and the Bean does so much more than brew a great cup of joe. The secret to its success is not in the food or drink. In fact, it’s no secret at all that patrons are supporting a greater cause. Ethan is the son of Founder Pam Donovan. Ethan has developmental and intellectual disabilities, including autism. Ethan and people like him also have a safe and supportive place to work. “I’m very excited about Ethan and the Bean and the whole project. I feel that our community needs a place like this for our special needs adults,” supporter Marcia Gurian said. “I’ve been working with special needs students for over 40 years and many of the students I’ve worked with are now adults. We need to find places for these wonderful men and women to become involved in our community and to be employed.”

Pam and Pat Donovan

That’s precisely where Ethan and the Bean comes in. Exclusively staffed by special needs adults and their mentors, Ethan and the Bean is a registered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit. Here, they learn all the ins and outs of running a successful business: from food and beverage preparation to operating the cash register and cleaning up.

Ethan

“They just need a little support and they’re off and running,” Donovan said. “They are absolutely doing amazing.” So amazing, in fact, that the organization caught the attention of Visions Federal Credit Union and earned its support through a program called Visions Cares. Visions supports hundreds of causes with donations, employee volunteers, and sponsorships as part of Visions Cares. In this case, Visions shares Ethan and the Bean’s commitment to providing an empowering environment that supports individuals in the workplace.

A SUMMER TRADITION Loads of Fun and Games at the State Fair Meadowlands By Sue Baldani, photos by Phil Hoops (ig: @hoopsapproved)

T

he annual State Fair Meadowlands is back and better than ever. Get together with family and friends between June 23 and July 10 for a fun and memorable time.

“Pay one affordable price and everything’s included, except the food,” says Al Dorso, owner of the State Fair Group “And it’s so easy to buy a ticket—you can do it right through your phone and avoid the lines at the box office.” It’s also cheaper to buy tickets in advance, and parking is free too.

Teens and adults will love the rides, like the Ski Lift, thrilling roller coasters, a 120-foot gondola wheel and more. For the little kids, there’s 35 rides in Kiddie Land just for them. There’s a big petting zoo as well, and tons of games to play. Of course, there’s also amazing food. “In the past couple of years, we’ve made a big push to offer different kinds of foods,” he says. “There’s a great Mexican concession this year, fantastic Greek food, and Puerto Rican food from Taino’s Kitchen in Newark.” With eight different shows every day, there’s something for everyone. “The hypnotist and the racing pigs are two staples—people love them,” says Dorso. “This year, we’ve added an illusionist and a magic show. We also have Jurassic Kingdom Lockdown, Cycle Circus, the BIG BEE Transforming Car and others.” Enjoy!
