GENTLEMEN’S HEALTH
JUNE IS
MEN’S HEALTH MONTH
MEN,
TAKE TIME FOR A TUNE It’s no secret that men need to pay more attention to their health. Much like keeping a vehicle in tip top shape by performing its routine maintenance, staying well depends on getting regular health check-ups and being in tune with your body. Prostate health is particularly important, since prostate cancer is one of the major health risks men face. And, about 1 man in 9 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. When caught early, however, it is treatable and potentially curable. So for Men’s Health Month in June, take time to learn about your prostate and how to keep it and your body running efficiently. But first, what is a prostate? It’s a walnutsized gland in men located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It surrounds part of the urethra, which is the tube in the penis that carries urine from the bladder. It produces seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm. Pretty important job, don’t you think? It becomes even more important as you get older. As men age, the prostate naturally grows. The most common prostate issue for men over 50 is an enlarged prostate. To stay ahead of these issues, see your urologist for regular check-ups.
QUESTIONS TO ASK DURING YOUR VISIT
When do I need a prostate exam? What is an enlarged prostate? What are the symptoms of an enlarged prostate? How is an enlarged prostate diagnosed? How many times a day should I be urinating? What should I eat for prostate health? Take charge of your health now and see your health care provider. Your prostate will thank you for it.
