I’m stepping in to write the editorial for Tessa this month. She is on standby to travel to the Far North to assist with Civil Defence Welfare operations.
Several of our council staff who are experienced in emergency operations centre roles have also headed north to assist. It is great that the skills and experience gained from local emergency events (and there have been quite a few!) can be called on to help the communities around the North Island that have been so drastically affected by the cyclone. Some of us have stayed here too, just in case!
March signals the start of Autumn, and it is also the time of year when many of our community projects accelerate back into action.
I am pleased to say the Volunteer Expos are back again in Kaiapoi, Pegasus and Rangiora. These are an ideal opportunity for potential volunteers to chat to local groups and organisations. If your group would like to attract more volunteers and be involved in the Expos, please contact me at wendy.howe@wmk.govt.nz
The Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs is a nationwide rural programme with the aim to support those who are disadvantaged in the labour market into sustainable
employment. We are delighted that the Waimakariri district has been accepted for a six month pilot programme. The new coordinator, Elizabeth Trevathan, will be joining the Community Team in mid-March. I’m sure there will be a profile on Elizabeth in the next Chatter edition.
Next Steps website is launching later this month. This site will be a significant asset in enabling people to access the help they need. There will be lots of promotion of this site coming soon.
Also happening this month is a poster competition for children and young people to promote cultural inclusion and understanding, more details on page 46. There is so much useful information from many varied community organisations in this month’s edition. I hope you can relax for a few minutes to read it through.
Bye-bye Summer, hello Autumn.
Ka KiteThere have been a number of people asking about the entitlements of North Canterbury residents regarding hospital discharge and taxi services. Historically, the CDHB agreed to provide return taxi transport in line with the below agreement to Rangiora residents in certain situations. This was in response to the removal of the local after hours service, in ~ 2018.
This arrangement still stands. However many hospital staff do not seem to be aware of this, and the patient needs to request this service. It may help if you snip or print this text below and put it in your wallet, or the wallet of your family to use in these situations.
When the GPs pulled out of providing an afterhours health service for the Rangiora population an agreement was reached whereby any patient who was instructed by the telephone service or St John to go to 24 hour surgery or ED was eligible to be transported back to Rangiora by taxi at the cost of planning and funding.
Order the usual Gold Band taxi and charge it to cost code 988. If a patient self-presents to ED then they are not eligible for this service.
If you have questions about this –contact martin.pugh@wmk.govt.nz

attend a monthly address on a range of topics, plus participate in the activities of a range of special interest groups such as History, Environment, Current Affairs, Art Appreciation, Books, Poetry, Singing for Health, Significant Films of the 20th Century, Epicurean et al.

World Wetlands Day was celebrated on 2 February to raise global awareness about the importance of wetlands for a healthy planet, how they function as a bond between land and water and significance for Māori. Wetlands enhance water quality through sediment filtration, nutrient cycling, native biodiversity enhancement, erosion control and hydrological buffering. Wetlands reduce the severity of flooding events by absorbing stormwater like a sponge, and holding onto it for forests and wetland plants to absorb slowly over time. Did you know that before colonisation, Auckland was largely made up of these systems? Concrete from cities and roads creates a surface that water cannot penetrate. This means that instead of this water being absorbed and released slowly, it runs off and accumulates quickly on the surface, resulting in dangerous levels of flooding as we have seen recently.
As a part of Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust’s 200-year plan, we aim to restore and rehabilitate indigenous coastal ecosystem’s diverse habitats, flora and fauna including coastal wetlands. Since European
settlement, 90% of New Zealand wetlands, which once covered 10% of New Zealand's land mass, have been lost.
A young shag was found by our rangers recently. The Department of Conservation advised that as the bird was uninjured but at risk of predation by dogs, we should place the bird back into a nearby tree for the parents to find and care for.
Our summer trainee ranger Rose has returned to Nelson to finish her coursework. Mikaela and Zeta will be returning to study to finish off their degrees in environmental science, and Emily will be starting her master’s in biology.
Compass FM is kindly supporting us with an interview notifying the public about our Open Day coming up on Saturday 4 March. Local announcers will talk about our event on the air between 6pm and 6am in the weeks leading up. Bring your whānau and have a blast with educational stalls, bouncy castles, face painting and much more.
If you would like to get involved, keep an eye out for upcoming planting days in future newsletters and via our Facebook page Friends of Tūhaitara Coastal Park.
If only there was a free weekly event in our district that allowed walkers, joggers, and runners to do a timed 5K event… Well – there is!
Pegasus Parkrun is the only free, timed 5K event in the Waimakariri District and has been running in Pegasus Town every Saturday morning since June 2016! Over 22,000 finishes have happened since then, and it’s getting more popular!
It’s not a race, it’s fun and social! We have approximately 80 parkrunners at Pegasus each week. You don’t have to interact with anyone if you don’t want to – but it’s a great place to meet like-minded people from all walks of life.
Parkruns are free, non-competitive, social 5K events where you can walk, jog, or run at your own pace. It’s for everyone - no matter your age, background, experience level, fitness level or gender. Parkrun is positive, welcoming, and inclusive, there is no time limit, and no one finishes last. You don’t have to be fit, experienced or fast. Everyone is welcome to come along.
We’d love for you to try a parkrun event! Parkrun is free and you only need to register once whether walking, jogging, running, volunteering, or a combination. Visit parkrun.co.nz to get a barcode which can be used at any of the 2,000 parkruns in 22 countries across six continents!
We scan your barcode at parkrun and afterwards you will receive an email with
your results. It’s very motivating to track your progress over time.
Pegasus parkrun starts and finishes at Motu Quay in Pegasus Town by the swing bridge on Lake Pegasus. Parkruns are 5K. The summer course consists of two laps around picturesque Lake Pegasus, the winter alternate course is out and back along the lakeside. Both courses are tar sealed and are adequate for strollers and wheelchairs.
Parkrun happens every Saturday, rain, frost, or shine. The first timer welcome is at 7.50am, the run briefing is at 7.55am and the parkrun starts promptly at 8am.
Pegasus parkrun is organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. Each week we gather a group of generous volunteers who make the event happen. We have a role for everyone, from marshal to report writer. Check out or website for more information!
Search for ‘Pegasus parkrun’ on Facebook or Insta to view photos from each event or visit our website at parkrun.co.nz/pegasus to sign up or learn more.

Rose Guy has over 30 years of experience teaching Tai Chi and Qigong. She has a weekly class in Rangiora and Kaiapoi. She runs Tai Chi Well and has kindly offered to run an introductory class for the cancer community at no cost.
Tai Chi, an ancient Chinese martial art, has been practiced for centuries as a form of exercise for both physical and mental wellbeing. The slow, gentle movements of Tai Chi are believed to boost physical strength and flexibility, as well as improve balance, coordination and concentration. One of the main benefits of Tai Chi for cancer patients is its ability to relieve stress and anxiety. Cancer treatments can take a toll on both the body and the mind, and stress can interfere with the body's ability to heal and recover. Tai Chi provides a meditative and relaxing experience that can help cancer patients feel more relaxed and at ease, which in turn can aid in the healing process.

Want to become a volunteer with IHC?
The IHC Volunteer Programme is about friendship in the community. This is what makes being a volunteer for IHC so unique. Spend time doing what you want to do, when you want to do it, with a person with an intellectual disability. By taking a moment to connect with someone with an intellectual disability, you can make a positive change in their life and gain a new friend in the process.
If you volunteer with IHC you’ll be matched with someone who enjoys doing the same stuff as you do.
It’s all about shared interests and doing what you want to do. So whether it’s exercising, going to a movie, or grabbing a bite to eat you’ll be doing things you both enjoy. Just keep doing what you usually do and include someone with similar interests.
The relationship is one-on-one. This means that you spend time with only one person, so you both get to know each other.
It is not time specific
There is choice
There is flexibility
The emphasis is on fun
You will be provided with full orientation and receive ongoing support from one of our Volunteer Coordinators.
Many people with intellectual disabilities tell us that most people in their lives are paid staff and family. By getting involved in the IHC one-to-one programme you can make a change in a person’s life –just by being a friend.
IHC’s unique one-to-one friendship programme has expanded to include skills-based volunteering. These are shorter, focused projects based on goals the person wants to achieve. You work one-to-one with a person with an intellectual disability to develop a specific skill or achieve a specific goal. You set the time commitment to fit the project.
We welcome applicants over the age of 17 from all walks of life to apply. People with intellectual disabilities have diverse interests and backgrounds so the more varied volunteers we have, the easier it is to match the perfect friendship
An IHC volunteer is a friend and somebody to go out and have fun with. IHC volunteers do not help with doctor’s visits, house, or office work. Having an IHC volunteer is about doing something together or learning how to do something new.
What their friends say
“We are both 26 – my friend is perfect. I used to be very shy but now I go out, have so much fun with her and sometimes we just hang out. We are great mates.”
– Aleina, North Shore.
“My friend is a sweetheart – she does art and crafts with me and the other day we went to the movies for the first time – I can’t stop smiling.”
– Kelly, North Shore.
“Peter has helped me in more ways than I can name. He brings out the positive in me, he genuinely cares so much for people – that is touching, and he has a beautiful, compassionate mind that I want to be more like.”
– Sharon, Ashburton.
To find out more about volunteering for IHC call: 0800 442 442 or visit
Ihc.org.nz/volunteer
To register your interest and a volunteer coordinator in your area will get back to you.
“If you want a more enriched life, I would highly recommend volunteering with IHC. It’s really not hard giving up a few hours a week, especially when you know it makes such a difference to a special person.”
– Sylvia, Blenheim
“Ciarra and I are friends now – it really doesn’t feel like I’m volunteering.”
– Brianna, Ashburton

Each year, CABs throughout Aotearoa New Zealand celebrate Awareness Week. We will mark it in 2023 from Monday, 20 March to Sunday 26 March.
Citizens Advice Bureau North Canterbury is a community organisation helping people know and understand their rights and obligations, and how to use this information to get the best outcomes. At CAB we provide people with the confidence and support they need to take action.
This year’s theme for Awareness Week is about supporting diverse communities and celebrating multiculturalism within the CAB whānau.
CABs offer free advice and information to everyone. We recognise and celebrate cultural diversity among volunteers and clients.
We are committed to making our service as accessible as we can, and this means
being able to help clients in a language other than English.
We have many multilingual volunteers throughout the country who can help clients in their own language and we are able to connect clients with those volunteers.
We have access to a telephone and video interpreting service that complements our nationwide pool of volunteers who speak various languages.
CAB volunteers come from many backgrounds and are diverse in their tikanga/culture, experience and the languages they speak.
We invite you to get in touch with us if you need help with any matter, no matter how big or how small. We’re here to help.
Our opening hours are 9.30am-3.30pm, Monday to Friday.

Is running a series of workshops for community groups. These workshops will be of particular interest to groups which are ‘incorporated societies’ i.e. groups with the word “Incorporated” or “Inc” at the end of their name.
This is because a new law has been passed for incorporated societies and it will affect the way these groups are run. All incorporated societies will have to update their constitutions, re-register their group and follow some new rules. This workshop is one of a series of workshops Community Law will be running to help local groups learn more about the new law. This workshop is open to those on the Board/Committee of a local incorporated society and to those who are managers of those groups. Please note that priority will be given to groups which don’t already have professional advisers. If you’d like to find out more about these workshops, please check Community Law Canterbury’s Facebook page or email communityeducation@canlaw.org.nz
