Dingle Notes Richie Williams TRIP ADVISOR. Since setting up their tourist accommodation outlets here in Dingle, the Heaton Family have certainly kept the Peninsula on the tourist map with awards annually flowing from their guests. The latest Trip Advisor Travellers Choice Awards place Heaton's Guesthouse as Ireland's Top Small Hotel and Castlewood House as No.1 for Best Service in Ireland. Both outlets have also been included in the top 10 in Europe in these respective categories. Sincere congratulations to the proprietors and staff on the consistent high standards provided to tourists who visit this area and carry home good memories of their stay. DISEART GARDENS. The new Sensory Garden in the grounds of An Diseart in Green Street was opened this week and is indeed well worth a visit. Designed by Mary Reynolds with much of the hard physical work undertaken by Tom Healy, Breda Enright and Robert Hickson. This is a great addition to the Family Tree Garden and the Ladyrinth Garden which were completed a few years ago. MASKS. We appeal to all our readers to wear face masks when entering all retail outlets as per Covid 19 Health guidelines introduced last week. This applies also to people using public transport and when coming in contact with the general public particularly in crowded areas. The way this virus is working its way through human contact is difficult to identify but we must all play our part in at least suppressing the spread until a successful vaccine or other prevention is identified. Yes you too can play a very important part in this challenge to society and show good example and encourage others to do likewise. LITTER. The huge influx of visitors to the Peninsula over the past few weeks and Covid related guidelines limiting indoor seating numbers has resulted in much more people eating take away food in outdoor areas. This of course leads to more litter on our streets and roads as unfortunately some people do not dispose of their leftovers in the correct manner. The County Council Staff have been servicing the litter bins in town 3 times daily but still large amounts of litter is visible especially in the mornings around the streets and car parks. It appears that the containers for such take away food are too robust to be placed in the bins so another remedy will have to be found to reduce the unsightly mess made worse by hungry birds in the quiet early mornings. A huge thanks to the County Council Staff for their efforts to keep the Peninsula a prime tourist destination which hopefully will continue despite some poor feedback particularly on pricing again this year.

Cromane News Jane Casey The numbers drawn in the Cromane GAA Lotto Draw on 5th August were 7,6,8,1. There was no winner of the €17,600 Jackpot. Four prizes of €40 each went to Elaine Sweeney - On Line Ticket. Mary O'Sullivan, Forest View - Ticket sold by Micheal Sullivan. Nora Mary Ring, Killarney -Ticket sold by Jack's. Ann Curtin, Cromane Cross - Ticket sold by Christine Casey Cromane GAA SENIORS: County Junior Football Championship (Group 4, round 3): Cromane 1-8, Lios Póil 0-7 Cromane were deserved victors in Farranfore on a perfect Saturday evening for football. Our lads were up for this match as they aimed to end their junior championship campaign with two wins from our four games, remember we had a preliminary round win against Ballylongford three weeks ago. While there will be a tinge of regret after losing to Tarbert by one last weekend and losing a lead in the last ten minutes against Castlegregory, the lads now know they are well capable of competing at this level.

Two second-half points from Donnchadh Walsh and a punched effort from Emmet Casey put to rest any ambitions the West Kerry men had of taking the points. Lios Póil's Deaglán Ó Suilleabhain was their scorer-in-chief and Donnacha Ó hUigín battled gamely at midfield but Cromane dominated this sector with Donnchadh Walsh and Darren Houlihan in fine form. Cromane's win meant both sides exited the County Junior Championship with Tarbert and Castlegregory qualifying for the quarter-finals from Group 4. Cromane scorers: Sean O’Sullivan 1-1 (0-1 free), Donnchadh Walsh 0-2, Darren Houlihan 0-2 (0-1 free), Mikey Houlihan, Emmet Casey, Darragh McKeefry 0-1 each. Cromane team: Sean Teahan; Brice Dourieu, Conor Sugrue, Mikey O’Sullivan; Finbar Casey, Cathal Crosby, Eanna Healy; Donnchadh Walsh, Darren Houlihan; Shane Ahern, Emmet Casey, Danny Healy; Darragh McKeefry, Mikey Houlihan, Sean O’Sullivan. Subs: Brendan Foley for B Dourieu (half time), Kieran O’Sullivan for E Healy 45th minute, Danny Shea for E Casey 55th minute.

A fine goal just before the half-time break, expertly converted by Sean O'Sullivan, after intricate approach work from Donnchadh Walsh and Darragh McKeefry and Mikey Houlihan proved to be the key difference in the end.

MINORS: The Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) minors are back in action this Saturday when they play Renard/St Mary's in Cahersiveen or Renard (to be confirmed) at 4pm. This is their second game in the county league, they won their first game (6-11 to 1-15) against DromidWaterville back in July - that also happened to be among the first games played for GAA clubs in Kerry after the original COVID-19 lockdown.

This goal gave Cromane a 1-5 to 0-4 lead, which could have been more had a Darren Houlihan penalty with the last kick of the half not clipped the post for a wide.

MID KERRY MINORS: Well done to Cromane players (Jason O’Connor and Liam Joy) who featured in the Mid Kerry minors’ win over Laune Rangers in Killorglin last Monday.

As it was, Cromane controlled most of the second half in what was a low-scoring game. The effort was there on both sides but the finishing wasn't always up to the same standard.

Mid Kerry won by 2-21 to 2-12 to qualify for the Minor County Championship quarter-final. They played St Brendan’s in that quarter-final on Monday evening last in Blennerville. Note that this competition is for under-17 players this year.

This game was settled by a very solid and controlled second-half display. Cromane's backline led by Conor Sugrue at full-back was excellent, denying Lios Póil any opportunity to make a realistic second-half comeback. They didn’t concede a point from play in the second half. Conor was supported by fine displays from Mikey O’Sullivan (in his first championship start), Eanna Healy (who had to leave with a shoulder injury midway through the second half), the tireless Shane Ahern, and Cathal Crosby at centre back. It was also great to see Danny Healy back starting in the maroon at wing forward, where he put in a solid shift.

UNDER-16s: The Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) under-16s play Milltown-Castlemaine in Cromane on Monday next (August 17). The game starts at 7pm. This will be their final game in phase one of the county league. So far they have one win (against Beaufort) from their two games, the other was a loss away to Firies. Phase two of the Under-16 County League is due to begin on Monday, August 30.

This was the under-14s second win in phase one and they can now start preparing for phase two of the county league. Depending on national COVID-19 guidelines, phase two is planned to start on Wednesday, August 19, with additional rounds on Wednesday, August 26, and Wednesday, September 2. Panel: Lucas Riordan; Jed Dando Switzer, Jamie Casey, Ben Sugrue, Daniel O’Sullivan, Jamie O’Sullivan, Conor Hayes, Keilan O’Sullivan, John B Horgan, Keith Moriarty, Tadhg O’Sullivan, Jack McGrath, Ryan O’Connor, Mikey Griffin, Noel Hannon, Craig Clifford, Timmy O’Connor, Cornelius O’Connor. JUNIOR FOOTBALL: Cromane have entered a B team in the upcoming County Junior Football League. It starts on Friday, August 14, and we have been drawn in Group J along with Fossa, Firies and Listry. Our fixtures are as follows: Round 1: Friday, August 14 – Cromane v Fossa in Cromane at 7pm. Round 2: Friday, September 4 – Listry v Cromane in Listry at 7pm. Round 3: Friday, September 11 –Cromane v Firies in Cromane at 6.30pm. BIRTH: Heartiest congratulations to Michelle and Eoin Hannon (Cromane Lr) and Australia on the safe arrival of baby Blathnaid Kay on 6th August. Best wishes to all for the future. MASS in Cromane every Friday at 8pm and Sundays at 10am. CHURCH SERVICE in St. Michaels every Sunday at 10am. SUMMER HOLIDAYS: Now that we are asking Irish people to holiday at home, let us be mindful and keep our towns, villages and beaches tidy and clean and weed free. If we all keep our property clean, tidy and weed free, the countryside will benefit. SUMMER CAMP: Tralee Performing Academy present Disney Frozen 2 in the CYMS Killorglin August Mon 17th to Friday 21st 11 to 2pm daily. €60 per child with sibling discount available. When Life Gives You Lemons… just say Thank You! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

Many of the health benefits of lemons can be attributed to its vitamin C complex, lemon juice is also a digestive tonic. Its astringent properties stimulate the liver and gallbladder, helping to emulsify fats, dissolve uric acid and aid digestion of proteins. Lemon juice supports bowel function by increasing peristalsis of the bowel thus prompting bowel movements to eliminate waste and improve regularity. Its cleansing properties make it an ideal tonic first thing in the morning to get things moving. In skin care, lemons were rated as a must-have in many cultures throughout the ages. European ladies of the Renaissance used lemons to redden their lips and lighten blemishes on the skin, making them very fine ladies indeed. Lemon juice is still used today to diminish age spots, brighten hair pigment and apparently lighten freckles. Again, vitamin C plays its part in the manufacture of collagen which gives skin its suppleness and elasticity, reducing wrinkles and fine lines. Today’s consumers, being more concerned about wrinkles than freckles, will often seek out beauty products with added collagen yet this is only one of many anti-aging attributes of vitamin C and lemons.

The lemon is one of the most universally known fruits across the globe. Originating in Asia, it was introduced to Europe via Spain by the Arabs in the 11th century and has been happily growing in the warm climes of Spain, Italy and Greece ever since. It has found its way to North and South America, Africa and throughout the Middle East. Unlike other fruits, the lemon has many roles, not just in the kitchen but in body care, healthcare, medicine and household care. There’s more to lemons than lemonade and with our European varieties at their peak right now, it’s a good time to put them to good use! The most notable nutrient of lemons in undoubtedly vitamin C. Lemons were much sought after by the sailors and miners of the 17th and 18th century to prevent scurvy. In 1747 naval surgeon, James Lind treated scurvy among English sailors with a dose of one to two ounces of lemon juice in water every four hours. When lemons reached a peak price following this discovery, they switched to limes, and were then referred to as “limeys”. To this day, the British Navy requires ships to carry enough lemons so that every sailor could have one ounce of juice a day. In tropical countries, lemon juice is commonly used as an antibacterial agent against malaria, diphtheria, cholera, typhoid and other deadly bacterial diseases. Vitamin C is a complex of flavonoids and phenols, all of which are anti-oxidants. These properties can neutralize free radicals that are responsible for aging and age-related disease, certain cancers, eye disorders and most degenerative diseases. Rutin can strengthen blood vessels, leading to better outcomes for haemorrhoids, haemorrages and varicose veins and can improve diabetic retinopathy and slow down its progression. New research is examining the role of tangeretin, a flavonoid found in lemon peel and its role in the treatment of brain disorders and Parkinson’s Disease. Asthma and allergic symptoms can also be improved with a higher vitamin C intake due to its anti-histamine properties. Apart from those with allergies to citrus fruits, many people can reduce the misery of hayfever, dust allergies and other inhalant-type allergies with the juice of a lemon in warm water everyday. Edmund Hillary (1919- 2008), the first man to reach the top of Mt. Everest attributed his success to lemons, claiming they aided his breathing and increased the availability of oxygen at high altitudes. He also gave credit to his Sherpa and unusually good weather conditions, but lemons were up there with him on the summit! Vitamin C from lemons is widely used as an anti-viral agent against colds and influenza in all parts of the world. With Covid-19 dominating our lives over the last few months a blast of seasonal lemons would do no harm. Our own hot toddy of whiskey, lemon, cloves and honey could be therapeutically enhanced with more lemon and less whiskey, which would shorten the duration of a viral infection and lessen the severity of symptoms. 12 West Kerry Live

Choosing lemons is not rocket-science but there are some things to consider. Firstly, the juicier lemons are thin-skinned with a fine, smooth texture. They are heavy for their size and should be bright yellow, fragrant and without blemishes. Most lemons are waxed for protection during transit, reduce moisture-loss and to improve appearance. Traditionally beeswax was used although nowadays most citrus fruits are waxed with a plastic, polyethylene or shellac. Although considered safe for consumption, it is best scrub lemons with a soft brush and hot water to remove as much wax as possible. Organic lemons are never waxed and preferable if using the zest. As the days of Summer wind down, a daily dose of lemon will keep us light, bright and sunny for the months ahead! Leabhar Breac ‘Is é scéal Éadaoine scéal mór grá na Sean-Ghaeilge, scéal nár mhair ach ina bhlúiríocha, blúire i Leabhar na hUidhre, blúire i Leabhar Buí Leacan. Tá an t-ábhar sin ar fad fite in aon scéal amháin ag Diarmuid Johnson na bearnaí líonta, agus feoil curtha ar na cnámha - ionas gur sean-eipic nua atá againn atá inchurtha le scéal Héilin na Traí, nó le scéal Tristan agus Íosóid. Bean de shliocht éanlaith an tsí í Éadaoin. Í seal i measc na neamhbhuan abhus, seal i measc na mbuan i mBrí Léith. Is í ba bhanchéile d’Eochaidh Rí na Teamhrach. Ach is do Mhidhir a thug sí grá a croí, do Mhidhir an tsí, Midhir Bhrí Léith, Midhir na háille agus na mbriathra meala. Ach cén t-iontas an t-ainm ‘Éadaoin’ uirthi? From The Archives Edited By Ted Creedon Dingle Port News From – Kerry Evening Post, 11 April 1860

The schooner Ellen of Cork is discharging a cargo of over 100 tons of wheat at the pier for R. Hickson and Son, Milltown mills. The Susan of Dingle left this morning with 10 tons of breadstuffs from the Milltown mills for Killorglin. [Breadstuffs – meal, flour or grain for making bread]. Mr. Hugh Cooper has left the Dingle coastguard station, on promotion, to take charge of the Cromane station as chief boatman. Up to a year ago he was the chief boatman in charge of the Castlegregory station. However, he was demoted temporarily for giving one of his men a day’s leave of absence. He has now been reinstated in his former rank.

Kilshannig Wreck From – Shipping and Mercantile Gazette, 23 November 1850

The schooner Errichetta of Naples has been wrecked after stranding at Kilshannig, near Castlegregory. She was bound for Limerick with a cargo of wheat from Barletta, on the east coast of Italy. One man of the crew of twelve was washed overboard and lost before she stranded. The cargo has been totally destroyed. The chief boatman in charge of the Castlegregory coast guard station, John Town, was responsible for saving the lives of ten of the crew by wading into the sea at great personal risk. The pilot, who had joined the ship at Falmouth, reported that they had been struck by a gale the night before which had ripped away the vessel’s sails. He said the cargo had shifted and the ship became uncontrollable.

the raging mob in Dingle. She appealed for additional troops to be sent to Dingle but this could not be approved without Government sanction. In the riot in Dingle two weeks ago the house of a Mr. Kevane was entered and thieves made off with 53 guineas.

Towed to Cardiff From – Shipping and Mercantile Gazette, 2 February 1877.

The barque James Duncan from Prince Edward Island, which was badly damaged in a storm off Dingle recently, arrived in Cardiff this morning after been towed from Dingle by the Liverpool tug Great Western.

Abandoned at Slea Head From – Tralee Chronicle, 12 April 1859

On Thursday morning last the Schooner Fanny drifted close to the rocks at Sleigh Head [sic] in calm seas and thick fog. She was carrying a cargo of flour and meal from the Shannon to Dingle and Caherciveen. The captain feared she would be wrecked so, after dropping two anchors, he and the crew abandoned her and proceeded to Ventry harbour in a small boat. The following morning H. M. Revenue cutter Desmond left Dingle and arrived at where the Fanny was still anchored and undamaged. The crew of the Desmond raised the anchors and headed for Dingle under full sail. The vessel was handed over to the Receiver of Droits, Mr. W. Collier.

Ventry Mystery

McCarthy, from the western part of Ventry parish, went to do some weeding in a potato garden with his idiot son James who was aged about 30. During the day the son headed homeward. The old man followed him as fast as he could but lost sight of him at a bend in the road near a high cliff. Mr. McCarthy met a man who said that he had not seen James on the road. The whole area has been searched but no trace of the son has been found. The general belief is that he must have wandered too near the edge of the cliff and fell down into the sea.

Serious Accident From – Tralee Chronicle, 23 January 1847

As the Inspecting Commander of the Dingle coastguard, Mr. Stern, and his chief officer, Mr. Jackson, were travelling in a horse and trap, on an inspection of the area’s coastguard stations yesterday, a serious accident occurred. Some goats ran across the road and frightened the horse who jumped over a wall and down a slope. Mr. Jackson was thrown out of the trap and rolled down the slope until his head became jammed between two rocks. The trap was smashed to pieces. Mr Stern had jumped out on the hillside and was uninjured. This accident is deeply regretted in Dingle as Mr. Jackson enjoyed the esteem of all who knew him and was always most charitable to the poor. [The impression is given that Mr. Jackson didn’t survive the accident – ‘enjoyed the esteem of all who knew him’. However, Admiralty records in the National Archives at Kew show that Thomas Jackson was appointed chief officer of Dingle coastguard station in 1842 and was discharged from service there in 1854].

Riots in Dingle From – Saunders’s News-Letter, 20 June 1793

During the rioting in Dingle on last Sunday and Monday it is reported that several members of the army and the rioters were killed. We understand that the rioters numbered 4,000 and that the elegant mansion of W. T. Mullins was totally demolished. Mrs. Mullins arrived in Tralee from Dingle with a chest of deeds and other papers, said to be valued at £100,000, which she lodged in the Customs-house to secure them from West Kerry Live 15

Farming News Louis Murchan CALF INVESTMENT SCHEME BEGIN The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine began issuing payments under said scheme. This initiative was put in place by Minister Michael Creed under the previous government, in advance of the Spring calving season with a view to ensuring the highest possible calf welfare outcomes and to provide targeted support to the rearing of beef calves from the dairy herd as well as replacement heifer calves born on Irish dairy farms. It was launched last December and opened for applications on 7 January 2020. Over 2,300 applications were received and approved to proceed under the scheme. The primary policy objective of the scheme is to support farmers in ensuring the welfare of calves born on Irish dairy farms, recognising the operational challenges associated with feeding in the early weeks of their lives. The investment focus is on supporting calf feeding systems such as computerised calf feeders, milk carts with mixer included and calf teat feeders. When a farmer purchased one of these items, they were also eligible to receive support for the purchase of other items, such as calf milk heaters, calf forage/hay racks, calf meal troughs, calf feed barriers and calf pen dividers. €50 MILLION BEEF FINISHER PAYMENT SCHEME WILL IMPACT UP TO 42,000 FARMERS The Beef Finishers Payment (BFP), worth €50 million will provide some provide income support for up to 42,000 farmers with beef finishing enterprises, who have been impacted by the economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. We are all aware of the difficulties caused by Covid-19 in the Irish beef sector and the consequences for those in beef farming and for the rural economy as a whole. Farmers with finished animals suffered from both reduced prices and other restrictions in getting animals to market. The closure of the food service market in Ireland, the UK and beyond has had a dramatic impact on the industry and in particular those who supply it to make their living. This scheme is aimed at farmers who finished cattle during the period from 1 February to 12 June 2020 and should help to alleviate the financial pressures as a result of Covid-19. It should provide a valuable additional income support this year. Beef farming is an important economic activity, with a significant multiplier effect in local rural communities, and thus is more important than ever in sustaining these communities as we work towards economic recovery.” This measure is targeted at farmers who finished animals and comes on top of a significant increase in targeted environmental and welfare supports for suckler production earlier this year, in the form of the BEEPSucklers scheme. The main points of the scheme are: • An estimated 42,000 farmers will be eligible to apply for the scheme, which will be based on the number of cattle sent for slaughter in the period from 1 February to 12 June 2020, subject to a limit of 100 animals per herd. Based on estimates of eligible animals, a rate in the region of €100 per animal will be payable.

• Resident on the qualifying herd for at least 30 days prior to slaughter (if not the previous owner is eligible for payment if they are an applicant and have had the animal for over 30 days on their holding) • Animals identified on the Department systems as presented for slaughter by or on behalf of a factory will not be eligible. • Subject to a cap on payments in respect of 100 eligible animals per herd. ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS: • A farmer who has presented animals for slaughter in the reference period •

The holder of an active herd number with Herd Owner Status.

• Farming a holding in respect of which a valid Basic Payment Scheme application has been submitted in 2020 to the Department. •

Agent or Dealer herd numbers are not eligible for payment

• Conditionality: Applicant must be a member of the Bord Bia Beef and Lamb Quality Assurance Scheme at the time of application, or undertake to become a member of a quality scheme prior to 30 September 2020. AGREEMENT BETWEEN DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AND IRISH HORSERACING REGULATORY BOARD (IHRB) A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was recently agreed and signed by Department and IHRB officials to provide Regulatory and Investigative Officers enhancing the IHRB’s investigative powers with regards to the use of Animal Remedies. This will provide further assurance to all stakeholders in preserving the reputation and confidence in Irish Horse Racing. This MOU aims to advance the already collaborative working arrangements between DAFM and the IHRB to improve the oversight, investigative and enforcement powers of the Horse Racing industry to support animal welfare and to strengthen domestic and international confidence in its ‘brand. Whilst extending the powers of the IHRB officers, the MOU does not alter the criteria or sanctioning process of the IHRB. Related prosecutions will remain at the discretion of my Department. The Department has been working with the IHRB for a number of months to develop this agreement and will continue to provide assistance to the Board, to meet the evolving needs of the racing industry while respecting the strong heritage of Irish racing. This in effect gives the IHRB Veterinary Officers additional investigative powers as authorised officers, which has to be welcome. IHRB officers will be trained to exercise powers and functions of authorised officers, such as seizing unauthorised or prohibited animal remedies, in relation to a variety of horses, land, premises and a number of actors across the sector. These include: • Thoroughbred breeders, their breeding establishments, or horses from other such establishments which have not yet entered training; • Persons acting under the direction of or under the control of a Thoroughbred breeder in relation to a horse to which the MOU applies; • Licensed Persons and Horses in the possession of, returned in training by or under the control of a Licensed Person within the meaning of the Rules of Racing;

• In the event of an over subscription, the rate of payment per animal will be subject to a linear cut in order to comply with the available budget of €50 million.

• Race meetings and Point to Point fixtures held under the jurisdiction and authority of the IHRB and Irish National Hunt Steeplechase Committee;

• The opening date for applications will be 19 August 2020 and the closing date will be 9 September 2020. Detail of the measure including terms and conditions and how to apply will be made available in due course at www.agriculture.gov.ie/farmerschemesandpayments/BFP

• Any person who is an Owner, Trainer, Handler, Permit Holder, Authorised Agent, or Authorised Representative (within the meaning of the Rules of Racing and Irish National Hunt Steeplechase Rules and/ or the Irish National Hunt Regulations for Point to Point Steeplechases as appropriate) and any other person who is acting under the direction of or under the control of or on behalf of an Owner, Trainer, Authorised Agent, or Authorised Representative in relation to a horse to which the MOU applies; and

NEW SCHEME FOR NATIVE WOODLAND ON PUBLIC LAND A new scheme to fund the creation of new native woodland on public lands meets one of the government’s main biodiversity commitments and will cover the cost of establishing such forests on suitable land in public ownership. The Scheme is aimed at all Public Bodies, including Government Departments and State Sponsored Organisations; Higher Education Authorities and Local Authorities. The scheme was approved by Government the end of last month and will commence with a landbank analysis by all public bodies to assess whether they have land suitable for planting. The Woodland Creation on Public Lands Scheme aims to conserve nature by developing permanent, non-commercial woodlands on public land that will deliver the following benefits: • Recreation of lost native woodland habitats, rich in biodiversity and cultural significance. • Reverse the fragmentation of other habitats and the loss of biodiversity corridors within the wider landscape. •

Carbon sequestration from forests that will exist in perpetuity.

• Protection and enhancement of water and associated aquatic ecosystems. • Provision of attractive woodland amenities, to promote health and well-being in the communities. •

leaved helleborine and wood millet, to name but a few. Native woodlands are an important part of Ireland’s natural heritage, history and culture, and are unique in terms of their biodiversity and habitat creation. This scheme will put in place permanent woodland that will capture carbon, can protect water, will add to our landscapes for years and keep the “Green” element of our government happy. Iarnród Éireann have stepped forward as the first public body to express an interest in the scheme. Approval to establish a native woodland is now being sought for a site on our land in Co. Roscommon as a pilot under this scheme. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938 (B Ag Sc, Dip EIA Mgmt) Agricultural & Environmental Advisor

YOUR MONEY MATTERS FINANCIAL ADVICE COLUMN Q&A

Saving Energy Tips at home Back toCost School Costs

Q: I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about saving energy in the home and I’d be interested in some tips on how I can do this and save money at the same time. What would you advise?

Comhar Chreidmheasa Chorca Dhuibhne

A: You can reduce your energy consumption and save money on your energy bills at the same time. Firstly, you should shop around. Switching your gas and electricity providers only takes a matter of minutes and the average consumer can save around €300 by switching from standard tariffs to the cheapest on the market. For accredited price comparison websites go to www.bonkers.ie or www.switcher.ie. Secondly, you should try to reduce your usage. Remember to switch off all appliances when not in use, whether it’s the microwave or the TV, and make sure to switch them off fully and not just leave them on standby. This could save up to 20% of your appliances’ energy use, or between €50 and €100 a year on an average household electricity bill.

Back to school this year will be different to every other year. Schools have been closed since March 12th and by the time the schools re-open towards the end of August, most children will have spent 24 weeks at home. So, the return to school will have extra significance this year with many parents, Heating & Insulation: This takes up a huge proportionof of our energy bills so conservingoptimism heat will children and teachers sharing feelings relief, anxiousness, you money. By insulating your attic you can cut your energy bill by 20%. Install a lagging jacket and you can save up to €2.50 per week in heating water costs.

There are also a few simple steps that you can take to lessen this burden. As far as possible, aim to buy generic rather that branded items, and try not to give in to pressure from your children to go for the more expensive items and look on this as being an opportunity to educate your children about the value of money and school budgeting. When it comes to books, some schools will supply second hand books or they may run a book rental scheme and it is worthwhile taking advantage of these schemes. Before you go shopping, make a list of what you need and try to avoid impulse buying or buying unnecessary items. Avoid using your credit card as far as possible as the interest you accrue will end up costing you more in the long run and stay away from money lenders. If you do need to borrow money to cover your costs then call into your local credit union to discuss your options. Milltown Castlemaine GAA Notes

a major turn of results (Eg: a heavy defeat) they would be in the draw for the Quarter-Finals so it was more about who would join them from this group in advancing than anything else.

UNDER 14's A fantastic win was had by our U 14 side on Thursday night last as they took the trip along the Dingle peninsula to face An Ghaeltacht in Gallarus. After the first 12 minutes nobody could have predicted the final outcome as a strong start from the hosts saw our U14's trail by 10 points after 3 quick goals.

Played before a reduced attendance due to Government restrictions on audiences, both sides would have been hoping to set the tone with a bright start, however it was Glenbeigh/Glencar who set the pace and who by the 10th minute had established a 0-4 to 0-1 lead through early scores from Tommy Cahill (0-2, one close range free and one mark which resulted in a 14 yard free), wing-back Caolim Teahan and wing-forward Daniel Griffin. Jonathan O'Sullivan who would be Milltown/ Castlemaine's Chief marksman for the second week in a row and finished the day with 0-8 in total was responsible for our only score in the opening quarter of the match from a 21 yard free.

Then our Milltown/Castlemaine U14 side showed a maturity beyond their years with the resolve and skill to come back into the game. With the whole team working together, a fantastic effort saw our visiting side run out winners by a score line of 3-16 to 5-06. Under 12's: Our under 12's have a break until the 16th and got a lovely treat of ice creams from one of the parents the other evening after training. So thank you Katherine for your kindness. Players and trainers were all delighted! Well done to Mike Quirke and his team of mentors.. Tremendous work being done with the Green and White teams. Obair iontach ar fad. Mid Kerry Minors: Comhghairdeas to club players Jack Teahan, Anthony Kelliher, Conor Spillane, Cillian Burke, Liam Roche, Patrick O' Sullivan and Brendan Casey who were part of the team that comprehensively beat Laune Rangers on Monday last on a scoreline of 2/22 to 2/12. Well done to their trainer Cathal Moriarty for his work with these footballers. We wish Cillian a speedy recovery from his injury. Hope to see you back real soon Cillian! Farewell and Welcome: This week past, we said goodbye to Fr Kevin as he moved to Killorglin and we welcomed Fr. Danny Broderick to our parish. We hope you both will be very happy in your new environs.Children from our club made themselves available to sing at Fr Danny's first Sunday mass. Congratulations to Sarah, Diarmuid and Aishling for their beautiful music and singing. Iarracht den chĂŠad scoth. Seniors: "The old adage that goals win games rings through as Glenbeigh/Glencar secure top spot and a place in Intermediate Quarter-Final" Intermediate Club Football Championship Milltown/Castlemaine 1-14 Glenbeigh/Glencar 4-12. Report by Dara O'Connor. On a sun-soaked Sunday afternoon, the J P O'Sullivan Park, Killorglin was the venue as the scene was set for a Mid Kerry Derby as Milltown/ Castlemaine, who were meant to be at home for this encounter but due to the pitch redevelopment works had to be content with neutral grounds, took on Glenbeigh/Glencar, now coached by John Evans. The Glenbeigh/Glencar side came into this contest with a 100% record having defeated Dromid Pearses and Waterville in Rounds 1 and 2 over the past few weeks whilst Milltown/Castlemaine came into today with one win and one defeat having beat Waterville and lost out to Dromid on the road. So with that in mind, it was straightforward enough permutations wise, Milltown/Castlemaine needed to win in the first instance and hope that would be enough to see them into the knockout stages (depending also on the result of the other game in this group which seen Waterville host Dromid Pearses there was the possibility of two or three sides finishing on the same points meaning score difference could have came into play). Glenbeigh/ Glencar due to their two victories to this point were in a commanding position knowing that barring

26 West Kerry Live

The middle period of the first half was Milltown/ Castlemaine's strongest spell in the game, it was also the only time they would go level with Glenbeigh/ Glencar for the remainder of the match as three Jonathan O'Sullivan frees, all from varying angles and with different degrees of difficulty following fouls on Gavin Horan by Colin McGillycuddy which was greeted with shouts for a black card from the crowd, David Roche and O'Sullivan himself out by the stand side. Matters were tied at 0-4 apiece after 17 mins when a water break was called. Following the resumption, Glenbeigh/Glencar really hit a purple patch between here and the half time whistle outscoring Milltown/Castlemaine by 1-4 to 0-1 in this spell to subsequently carry a six point lead into the interval. This included a wonderful personal cameo on the part of former Kerry player and multiple All-Ireland winner Darran O'Sullivan who added 1-2 on his own and in a row between the 19th and 24th minutes to open up a 1-6 to 0-4 lead. The goal came from a defensive mishap which the former county man ruthlessly capitalised on and finished to Cormac Leane's net giving the Kilderry man no chance. This followed a positional switch which seen O'Sullivan move into the full forward line from the half-forward line and the switch worked wonders it must be said as he had an ocean of space to run into in the inside line which a man of his experience used to his advantage. Gavin Horan did point for Milltown/ Castlemaine in the 25th minute after a great run through the Glenbeigh/Glencar rearguard to make it 1-6 to 0-5 but two points to finish out the half from Glenbeigh/Glencar through two Gavin O'Grady frees (one superbly slotted over off the ground from 45 metres) left the gap as previously stated at six points at the break. Milltown/Castlemaine were reduced to 14 men near the end of the opening half in a call which led to protestations in the dugout as it was felt the black card issued to Ciaran O'Connor was harsh but the decision stood as the referee adjudged it to have been an off the ball foul. Milltown/Castlemaine wasted no time in coming out of the blocks in the early stages of the second half and kicked four unanswered points between the 30th and 38th minutes with scores from Jonathan O'Sullivan (0-2, 1 free) and centre-back Gavin McKenna (0-2, both from play) seeing the scoreboard read Glenbeigh/Glencar 1-8 Milltown/ Castlemaine 0-9 and it appeared as if at this stage the momentum had swung with Glenbeigh/Glencar failing to offer much going forward during this spell. What was to follow ultimately proved pivotal and ultimately finished the game as a contest as Glenbeigh/Glencar struck for two green flags in the 40th and 43rd minutes which all but ended

the oppositions chances of mounting any sort of comeback. Firstly, a terrific free-flowing team move unlocked the Milltown/Castlemaine defence before Darran O'Sullivan squared for youngster Adrian O'Connor to bury to the corner of the net whilst falling backwards, the other goal came from an attempt for a point which was dropping short, Jason McKenna anticipated it and rose above Cormac Leane to fist to the net and all of a sudden the lead was now gone from two points to eight points at 3-8 to 0-9, a devasting blow for Milltown/ Castlemaine who were really starting to grow into the game before the double concession. Substitute Jerome Flynn did reply for the Mid Kerry champions with a long range point immediately to make it 3-8 to 0-10 but you couldn't help but feel that the ship had sailed at this stage heading into the last quarter unless Milltown/Castlemaine could raise a green flag or two of their own which to be fair all day didn't really look like materialising despite no lack of effort or commitment. The icing was really put on the cake for Glenbeigh/Glencar in the 48th minute when Tommy Cahill got on the end of another attempt at a point, this time the initial effort coming from Gavin O'Grady which dropped short, wasn't dealt with and Cahill showed his opportunism and got his fist on the end of it at the back post to make it a very commanding lead at 4-8 to 0-10, a lead which to be fair didn't really reflect on how close this contest had been for the most part up to then. To Milltown/Castlemaine's great credit when it would have been easy to lie down and drop the heads, they never gave in and battled gamely towards the finish. Cathal Moriarty tagged on a point to make it 4-8 to 0-11 before Glenbeigh/ Glencar through a fisted point from Gavin O'Grady and close range scores from Daniel Griffin and Adrian O'Connor had matters at 4-11 to 0-11. A sweeping move from Cathal Moriarty then drew a number of defenders to him, he unselfishly played in Substitute Craig Counihan who composed himself before expertly finishing to the top corner of the Glenbeigh/Glencar net, 4-11 to 1-11 after 55 minutes. Whilst the contest was all but over, the scores kept coming. Gavin O'Grady who was a tricky customer all day calmly added Glenbeigh/Glencar's last score of the day on 57 mins off his left boot to make it 4-12 to 1-11 but it would be Milltown/ Castlemaine who notched the final three points of the afternoon and each of them came from Jonathan O'Sullivan who was probably Milltown/ Castlemaine's main man on a day where it just didn't quite happen for them as a collective. Overall, Milltown/Castlemaine may look back on this contest and point to three of the four goals conceded being very preventable which will be a source of frustration and disappointment in equal measure. As Dromid Pearses beat Waterville by 12 points it will be them and Glenbeigh/Glencar who advance from Group 4 to the Quarter-Finals. Waterville fall into the relegation playoff semi-final as one of the four teams to finish bottom in the group stages. Milltown/Castlemaine finished 3rd. Milltown/Castlemaine lined out as follows: Cormac Leane, Stephen Roche, Ciaran O'Connor, Jonathan O'Connor, Pa Wren, Gavin McKenna (0-2), Jeremiah Hayes, Brendan Delaney, Donal Dennehy, Killian Kerins, David Roche, John Dennehy, Jonathan O'Sullivan (0-8), Cathal Moriarty (0-2), Gavin Horan (0-1) Subs Used: Craig Counihan (1-0), Jerome Flynn (01), Kieran O'Carroll, Dylan O'Neil, Tadgh McCarthy

It is good that the Covid 19 figures in Kerry are relatively low. Let’s do our part to keep it that way by complying with the practices advised by the health and safety authorities. Stay safe and many thanks for taking good care in the community! Rings from Drink Cans donating to Kerry Palliative Care Unit: I read a month ago of someone in Cromane collecting can rings from drink cans, so I sent her some and asked for more information. She explained that there was an elderly man collecting them. His wife and son had both died of cancer. They collect them and his other son takes them to a recycling centre in Cork. Whatever money they get they donate to the Palliative care unit in Kerry. Obviously it takes a lot of them as they are paid by weight. So, I thought if we could add to his collection it would make Palliative care a bit

Camp Notes Brigid O'Connor DOG OWNERS BE AWARE Dog owners, be aware of cable ties placed on your gate or fence ! In recent times this practice has been associated with the theft of family dogs. As many as 10 dogs believed stolen in Kerry were found recently in Rathkeale. The Gardaí are appealing to all dog owners to be aware and anyone missing a dog are asked to please contact them. Dogs are valued and much loved pets and many people are deeply distressed by their loss. A dog is often a persons only companion. SUCCESS Congratulations to Dr. Breda O'Dwyer, Camp Cross on achieving her Doctorate on Entrepreneurial Mindset. Breda researched and produced her thesis on the entrepreneurial mind-set of the entrepreneurship educator - essentially showing it to be a dynamic life long process and that each and everyone of us has the potential to behave entrepreneurially - people just need to have our minds open to it. It is about embracing change, being transformative and adding value - and goes way beyond being just about setting up a business - about being open to learning, thinking and behaving entrepreneurially! Breda says going forward Ireland, Europe and global policy makers are seeking entrepreneurial thinking citizens and are tasking the educators with achieving this objective - hence the need to learn about the entrepreneurial mind-sets of these educators - hence her study found that they do indeed have entrepreneurial mindsets and can help others to develop theirs. Go n-éirí an t-adh leat, a Bhreda.

SUCCESSFUL DEBUT IN THE USA How exciting to read the following report on the sporting success of Campman Kenneth Quirke in the USA. Report in Kerry Motorsport News as follows - Successful US debut for Quirke. Kenneth Quirke took a very creditable fourth overall on his American rally debut on Saturday July 18. The New York-based Camp man contested the Southern Ohio Forrest Rally as co-driver to Ryan Booth, a former Indy car racer who, in recent years, turned his hand to rallying. The pair used a McKenna Motorsport hired Ford Fiesta R5 for what was the second round of the Rally America national series and their opposition reflected the event’s national status. Congratulations and well done Kenneth ! OBITUARY The death of Sean Curtin, Lougher, Annascaul occurred recently in Johannesberg, South Africa. Sean emigrated at a young age to Australia, finally settling down to a content and happy life in Johannesberg. Sean never forgot his home and his Irish roots and so his final wish to be buried with his mother May and Father John Joe in Inch Cemetary, will be carried out a a later date. Sympathy is extended to his son John, grandson John, his sisters Maura, Slieve, Camp and Margaret, Kilteenbane, Camp many relatives and friends. Sean was predeceased by his parents May and John Joe and sisters Kathleen and Phil. Rest In Peace. GAA Annascaul defeated Sneem/Derrynane in Round 2 of the Kerry Petroleum Junior Championship. Contributing to the high scores for Annascaul were The Crean brothers, Aidan and James, Jack Farrell, Fenton Herlihy, Eamonn and Jason Hickson, The Falveys, Cillian and Alan and Cathal Ferriter. Final Score Annascaul 7-23, Sneem Derrynane 0-7. Well done all, Congratulations to all the team, managers and mentors.

FAREWELL TO FR. GERRY On Sunday after 12 noon Mass in Camp Fr. Gerry Keane our resident Parish Priest in the parish of Annascaul, Camp and Inch for the past 5 years said farewell to a large gathering of parishioners outside St. Mary's Church. Fr. Gerry is the 86th priest in the parish, the first being a Fr. D. McCarthy who served here from 1829 - 1830. And St. Marys Church, Camp was built in 1826, 3 years before Catholic Emancipation. A presentation was made to Fr. Gerry on behalf of all parishioners in the Camp area and Gene Finn, Chairman Camp Community Council and Brigid O Connor said a few words of thanks in grateful appreciation to Fr. Gerry for his commitment and his dedication to the parish over the years.

Michael Greaney Ltd

Agri Contractor Ballyguin, Brandon, Tralee, Co. Kerry.

A lone Priest in a parish with 3 churches was not an easy Parish assignment and therefore the parishioners are very grateful to Fr. Gerry who despite difficult mountainous terrain and often inclement weather, never failed to turn up on time, be it for a service for our dearly departed, a christening or wedding, Fr. Gerry never left any family down. For that he will be fondly remembered and parishioners are eternally grateful to him ! Camps loss is Eyeries gain and everybody wishes Fr. Gerry great happiness and success in his new ministry Parish Priest of Eyeries and Allihies, Co. Cork. In his final homily in Camp, Fr. Gerry read a letter from a young parishioner whose lovely sentiments of appreciation pleased him greatly, Fr. Gerry departed at the end of his final Mass in Camp with an appropriate quote from scripture - When I have taught you everything, I will leave ! A Short Poem, was also read as follows AFTER CAMP MASS Fr. Gerrys in a hurry, And hes not going making hay, And as sure as God above looks down on us, St. Senans are playing today. Go n-Eirí an t-adh leat, Fr. Gerry. 32 West Kerry Live

The Little Cheese Shop

Miso Glazed Aubergines

Dingle

Mark Murphy Dingle Cookery School

What a delicious way to serve aubergines. A variation of this will regularly be found on the Japanese table. Try this once and you will love it, it has such flavour and is perfect served with rice or noodles or as a side dish for a barbeque. Miso paste can be now found in most shops, especially in health shops. It is a brilliant ingredient to have, a spoon to any dish will give it a meaty or umami flavour.

Enjoy some great cheese for a picnic or at home!

Bígí i dteagmháil linn ar 066 Tom Kennedy 9156100 nó pleanteanga@cfcd.ie Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity. A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how! Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year. A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx

What’s Happening in the Hub?

Cónaigh i gceantair cruthaitheach, Oibrigh i spás cruthaitheach

Deirdre de Bhailís We’ve been listening closely to the needs of those of you who are currently working remotely from the Dingle Peninsula and it seems clear that the provision of space to enable professional video conferencing with high spec technology and reliable broadband is one of the key requirements. This can facilitate commercial meetings, training sessions, webinars and the general digital enablement of activities on the Peninsula. For this reason, the Dingle Hub is seeking proposals for the provision of a full video conferencing solution for a meeting room located at the Dingle Creativity and Innovation Hub in Cúilín Business Park. Full details of the brief can be found on www.dinglehub.com/vacancies. If you are interested in working with us to complete this project, please send a proposal to tenders@dinglehub.com no later than 15:00 on Wednesday, August 26th. The installation needs to be completed by the end of October 2020 and has a maximum budget of €7,500. For anyone who missed our Reimagine series of online workshops we now have recordings of these workshops up on our website. This exciting series was enabled by funding from South West Gnó Skillnet. The series was conceived as a way to support businesses and individuals on the Dingle Peninsula; they guide participants in these interactive workshops to find ways to reimagine and to find new opportunities and ways of working in these challenging times. Areas covered by our panel of expert facilitators include Intro to Social Media and Marketing in Challenging Times with KCDigital founder Katie Conneely, How to Make a Podcast, How to Market your Podcast and Motivation in Challenging Times with Shane Finn, Communicating with Confidence and Working from Home & Online Meetings with Speak Up Club founder Deanna O’Connor and Wellbeing in Challenging Times with mindful coach Silke Michels. We received great feedback from the sessions and look forward to facilitating future workshops and events. Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Bhí drochaimsir Mí Iúil againn ach tá cúrsaí breacaithe ag laetheannta breátha Mí Lúnasa. Tá na sluaite tagtha chugainn ar saoire. Ceantar draoíchtúil a dúirt fear amháin a bhí thíos ar thrá Fhinn Trá moch ar maidin lá gréine lena chlann óg. Tá an talamh ag teacht chuige féin. Bhí sé éirithe cruaidh. Ceithre lá breá agus breis fachta againn. Tá an riach ceart orainn ag canrán. Dá mbeadh aimsir bhrothallach is gearr go mbeadh daoine, go mór mhór feirmeoirí, ag guí go dtitfeadh báisteach. Cad déarfadh uinéirí gáirdíní ach go mbeadh fáilte roimh an bháisteach agus an ghrian. Gan dabht bhí scanradh fachta ag an bpobal scéalta fé Oíche na Goithe Móire ag deire an séú aois déag. Tháinigh breis agus bliain ná raibh báisteach ná grian ach gach aít fé shioc cruaidh agus leac oighir ins gach aon áit. Bhí aibhnte agus fiú an cuan agus breis fé chrua aimsir. Thárla sléacht. Fuair na mílte bás don ocras agus d’on bfuacht. Ansan bhí An Gorta Mór mar a fuair suas le milliún duine bás don ocras faid a bhí na céadta tonna bia á sheoladh thar farraige. Ar m’anam ach go bhfuair ár muintir scannradh nuair a bhuail an gála gaoithe a leag tithe agus a mhairbh agus a mháclaigh an lag. Deirtear gur mó daoine per míle cearnach a fuair bás don ngorta agus pláigeanna ná mar a thárla dos na Iúdaigh sa Ghearmáin le linn cogadh fuilteach na Gearmáine in aghaidh na Iúdach ná na Rúisigh a bhain do shiúl na nGearmánach ag léagar Leningrad. Chonaicís an marú a thárla nuair a phléasc tonnaí do abhar shean cogaidh le deanaí sa Liobáin. Ní raibh ach milliún duine beo nuair a tháinigh cóta leac óighir a lean bliain go leith. Fuair 400,000, bás don bhfuacht agus don ocras. Is baolach ná ró-chruinnn a bhí eolas an uair úd. Caid Tá tosnú maith déanta ag foireann sínsir caide na Gaeltachta agus iad tréis trí chluiche a bhuachaint. Má éiríonn leo beidh siad sna cluichí ceathrú ceannais mar a mbeidh ceithre fhoirne ins gach rannóg. Tá trí bhua ag an nGaeltacht agus cinnte tá siad le bheith sa choimlint le foirne laidre insa chomórtas eile. Tá buaite ag an nGaeltacht ar fhoireann Lios an Phúca agus ar fhoireann Naomh Muire, ó Cathair Saidhbhín. [Bhuaidh fhoireann Lios.’n Phúca craobh sóisir Na hÉireann anuiridh]. Tá na buachaillí fé 14 bl. ag dul i neart. Má leanann siad beidh a dtuairisc sna blianta rómhainn. Tagtha Tá na céadta nó na milte sa cheantar le déanaí. Gan dabht is Éireannaigh a bhfurmhór. Ambaiste ach go bhfuil eagla ar scata go mbeidh an Víoras ina ndiaidh. Ní fios cad ar a bhíonn ar aigne ag daoine ach go minic ní bhíonn dada. Tá súil agam ná beidh aon duine thíos leis an gcladhaire, an víoras, agus go mbeidh pinginí déanta ag na tábharnóirí agus na bialainn. Cinnte tá gnó maith á dhéanamh fé láthair ag gach áit atá oscailte: tá súil againn go gcoimeadfaidh an méid sin beo i gcóir an gheimhridh iad. Is deas muintir na hÉireann a fheiscint ar saoire anseo agus iad amuigh ina sluaite béasacha ar na tránna agus bímis ag súil go dtiocfaidh siad arís bliain eile – é sin ag braith cuid mhaith ar an aimsir gan dabht.

Bás Fuair Pádraig Joe Goodwin ós na Machairí bás an tseachtain seo caite in aois 89 bliain agus seacht mhí. Bhí 17 clainne air agus a bhean chéile Áine Hilliard. Fear mór ceoil bea PJ agus bhí ina bhall gníomach i gCómhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. Bhuaidh sé agus Áine comórtas CCE seite agus go leor eile comórtas. Bhí an- shuim aige sna capaill agus marcach aitheanta b’ea é. Tá beirt iníon dóibh pósta i gCathair Scuilibín, Margo pósta le Pádraig Ó Sé agus Marion le Tomás Ó Néill. Fuair a chéile Áine bás beagan le cos dhá bhliain ó shoin. Solas Dé ag a n-anamacha.
