As we follow our own path through life we all experience those times when we have ‘lightbulb’ moments – times when we seem to gain a new understanding or insight that can change the way we live or look at life, page 16 tells you more.
As if we need an excuse to drink a glass of bubbles, but just in case you do it’s time to celebrate National Prosecco Day (13th August) and open a bottle or two of our favourite prosecco (page 31).

Can’t Find Anything in Your Handbag?
If it’s starting to feel like your handbag is a black hole and you can’t find anything when you need it, you’re not alone. Trying to always be prepared can lead to us carrying an array of items however, this can actually result in us feeling unorganised!
The style of bag you use can have a significant impact on how easy it is to keep the mess away. Whilst different bags may be better suited for different occasions, Such as compact crossbody’s or shoulder bags are handy for staying organised as their smaller size means there’s no space for clutter. On the other hand, roomy tote bags or backpacks can be the worst culprits as not only do they offer plenty of space for all your essential items, but they welcome lots of nonessential ones too.”
Affinity caught up with handbag and accessory brand Fiorelli’s Design Manager, Nia Davis and organisation expert Nicola Rodriguez (@essexhousedolly) to share how to best pack and organise your handbag.
Clear Out Your Handbag
The first step in organising your current handbag is to clear it out. Empty the contents of it and put them to one side, throwing out any receipts, gum wrappers or other rubbish. Once cleared, Nia advises to “unzip any pockets or compartments and shake your bag over a bin, turning the lining inside out, if possible, to get rid of any crumbs or fluff. A lint roller can also help remove any last bits of dirt.”
Decide What to Keep
Once you’ve cleaned your bag, it’s time to decide what stays and goes. Nicola explains that “you should only carry things in your handbag that you need daily and anything you are keeping just in case has to go.”
Carrying all your personal, important, or expensive belongings should also be avoided as it means you could potentially lose them all at once should the worst happen, and your bag is stolen or lost, so it’s best to keep expensive items to a minimum.
Make Use of Compartments and Side Pockets
Now that you’ve purged your bag of all those extra items, prepare to reassemble your bag. Nicola advises that “when you are placing things in your handbag, utilise the space and find where you can easily fit things. Make use of compartments which can help store
things in separate places such as flat items like laptops and notepads in one pocket, larger items like a water bottle or umbrella in another and smaller items such as lip balms or pens in internal zipped compartments”.
If your handbag doesn't come with separate compartments, there are handbag dividers you can buy to put inside of a handbag instead. Items that you use all the time are also important to store separately so they’re easy to grab, as Nia explains that “it's helpful to pack these items in separate side pockets so you know they'll be the only thing in there.”
Compartmentalize with Pouches
One of the best ways to keep your handbag organised is to separate the items you carry into smaller bags or perhaps organisational pouches which you may likely already have around the house to create a system. For example, you could have similar items such as headphones and a charging cable in one, while another could hold items such as bobbles and makeup. Nicola shares that “pouches make life so much quicker and saves you rooting around to find things, re-enacting the famous Mary Poppins scene to find something.” It also makes it easy to switch handbags as you can simply move the pouches.
Minimize Your Beauty Products
Whether you didn't have time to apply makeup, or you want to keep some products on hand for touch-ups, make sure to only bring necessary items. There’s no need to carry around giant bottles or your full makeup bag, use mini versions or travel bottles instead. If you can’t find travel-sized versions of your favourites, you can get little containers to store lotions in.
When it comes to carrying perfume, pour some of your favourite into a travel spray bottle. It makes such a difference with the weight of your bag and also fits inside better.
Clean Out Your Bag Once a Week
A bag will inevitably get filled over time so instead of making it a once-a-year cleaning, set a time to clean and re-organise your bag each week, this will make the whole process more manageable and take about five minutes if it’s already mostly clean and organised. Check your pouches to ensure every item is in the right place and remove any excess change, receipts or other items that don’t belong.

How to Combat Disrupted sleep Whilst on your Period
Latest research from Silentnight finds women wake up three and a half times a night while on their period which means their menstrual cycle costs a total of around a week’s sleep over the course of a year.
Oestrogen plays a significant role in regulating body temperature, so as oestrogen levels drop while women are on their period, overheating becomes a major issue, which is reflected by nine in ten (92%) women reporting body temperature issues while on their period.
On top of this, decreasing progesterone levels result in a lack of Non-Rapid Eye Movement sleep, also known as deep sleep, meaning even if women manage to sleep for a normal number of hours, they will still be left fatigued, sluggish, and perhaps grumpy due to a lack of NREM sleep.
Women also face further issues such as stress and discomfort when experiencing their menstrual cycle. Stress increases hormones such as cortisol at night meaning we will find it difficult to sleep as our bodies struggle to produce sleep hormones, like melatonin, whilst part of our body is telling us to stay awake.
Sleep expert Hannah Shore shares her top three tips for women to ensure they sleep soundly sleep whilst on their period.
1. Temperature Control
Your body temperature will fluctuate at different rates depending on which part of your menstrual cycle you are on. Days 14-28 (the luteal phase) of the cycle tends to be where the body temperature will fluctuate most, due to the decrease of oestrogen during this stage.
Wearing loose pyjamas made from materials that wick away moisture, such as bamboo, can help, while a lower tog duvet topped with a blanket can give you easy options for warmth or cooling.
The mattress can also play a key role in regulating body temperature. Foam tends to hold onto a little more heat than fibres such as wool or polyester.
2. Food for Thought
Women can often suffer from Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) during the luteal phase of the cycle, this is when we see a greater change in hormones. One of the symptoms from PMS is sudden cravings for food, it is thought that reduction in serotonin levels leaves you craving foods that you enjoy, often ones high in sugar and fats.
Eating large amounts of these foods before bed can have a negative effect on your sleep. We’re not saying don’t eat these foods, go ahead, let’s face it you deserve it! But try to reduce the intake of these foods 2-3 hours before bedtime so they do not impact your sleep.
3. Understand your Environment
Waking up throughout the night is normal, so if you’re rising because you need to change, try to ensure you don’t disrupt your sleeping environment too much. Avoid turning on the main light in your room or bathroom as this can prompt the body to wake up further.
Darker bedding, a towel, and period knickers are all ways to help reduce the impact should a leak happen. Don’t be afraid to sleep in a different bed to your partner if that makes you feel more comfortable, this happens more than you think and doesn’t mean you don’t love each other - just that you’re prioritising vital sleep.
Everyone has different ways to relive pain when they are on their period, ensuring this relief is next to your bed means you don’t have to go into the bathroom rummaging around to find it in the middle of the night.

Life Changing Truths
As we all follow our own path through life we have probably all experienced those times when we have ‘lightbulb’ moments – times when we seem to gain a new understanding or insight that can change the way we live or look at life.
We will all have different ‘truths’ that we’ve discovered at different times often as we reach points in our life where we’ve been forced to take a bit of a long hard look at things. It seems to be the case that these realisations are more likely to occur when the chips are down than when life is plain sailing but here is a roundup of some of the truths I am realising have the power to change aspects of our lives. And if we are striving for our best life, the one with greatest happiness, fulfilment and peace then often internal change is necessary and these truths may help.
Failure is part of life
Not only is failure a part of life it often precedes success. Think about a child learning to walk – they ‘fail’ many times as they fall over. But each and every time they get back up and that tenacity eventually enables success. In fact, it can be really humbling to watch a child learning a new skill the effort and determination they put in can often put us to shame. Success is about getting out of our comfort zone and trying – and often experiencing failure, or what feels like failure at the time but that is actually part of the learning process. Quite simply if we don’t risk and often experience failure we aren’t likely to be learning or growing
You are Living the Life you have Designed
So many people seem to go through life unhappy with their lot and obviously we can all accept that there are some aspects of life that are hard to change. But there are also lots of things we can change. No one is likely to drop the life you dream of into your lap. It is up to us to craft the life of our dreams. That might mean material change or it might mean adjusting our attitudes or the way we frame our situation but at the end of the day it is all on us. We only get one shot at life and it is up to us to make it a life we want so work out what you want and go grab it.
“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”
George Bernard Shaw
Being Busy isn’t the same as Being Productive
It is easy to be busy – in fact many of us would grumble that we are too busy. But it’s worth taking a moment to examine that busyness. Are the things we are doing and the energy we are expending on doing them actually helping us to get where we want to be. Sometimes busyness actually stops us from taking stock as we just get stuck on a treadmill and without pausing to reflect we can remain busy but not productive and miss out doing the very things that would help us to change.
Self-worth can only Come from within YOU
One of the things that can really limit us in life is low self-worth. It can make us believe we don’t deserve to be happy or well or live the life we might dream of. If these limiting beliefs are operating in your life then you are unlikely to be fulfilled as your subconscious mind will cause you to sabotage yourself. All sorts of life experiences can cause low self-worth but it can be repaired. A good way to start is with some affirmations of the truth such you as much as anyone else deserve to be happy –you have inherent worth and value as a human being. Take time to work on your own sense of self worth or you can easily find yourself ‘stuck’.
Let go and Live
I bet all of us have had times when we’ve been upset and found it hard to forgive. It is easy to hold a grudge but the negativity that resentment can cause is something that damages us. So, it’s important to remember that forgiveness releases us – we forgive mostly for ourselves.
Live in the Moment
Increasingly many of us are beginning to realise that life is lived moment by moment and being present in the moments is the best way to be happy. It sounds incredibly easy but in reality, most find it quite a long learning process.
Most days the majority of our thoughts are taken up with the past or the future and it often takes a real effort to be present in the moment. But when we can manage it we often find a deep sense of joy and satisfaction.

Pea and Prawn Stir Fry with Ginger and Coconut
“This tasty, one pot meal screams gourmet but is super simple to make. Other vegetables can be used instead of peas”
Ingredients
6 spring onions
2 cloves of garlic, peeled and chopped
1-2 fresh red chillies, seeds removed and chopped
½ stalk of lemongrass (optional)
20g piece of fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped
1 orange pepper, cut into strips
1 - 2 tsp olive oil
340g frozen king prawns, defrosted
150g sugar snap peas
100g frozen peas, defrosted
80ml coconut cream
100 ml vegetable stock
2 limes. Juice and zest one. Cut the other into 4 wedges
30g coriander, leaves and stalks
roughly chopped
1 tsp Thai fish sauce
4 nests of wholewheat noodles
Method
Trim the spring onions and cut into 2cm lengths. Discard the outer layer of the lemongrass (if using) and finely chop the bottom part of the stem. Drizzle a little oil into a large frying pan or wok and cook the spring onions, garlic, chilli, ginger, lemongrass, and pepper strips over a medium heat until soft but not coloured.
Add the prawns, sugar snap peas, peas, coconut cream and vegetable stock to the pan. Add the lime zest and add half of the chopped coriander. Bring the pan to a simmer. Cook gently for 5 minutes or until the prawns are cooked (they will turn pink) and the vegetables are tender. Just before serving add a splash of Thai fish sauce, a squeeze of lime juice to taste
Whilst the vegetables and prawns are cooking, place 4 nests of wholewheat noodles in a separate bowl and cover with boiling water. Drain the noodles after 4 minutes and place a few noodles in the bottom of four warm serving bowls. Serve the prawns and vegetables with the noodles and a scattering of chopped coriander and lime wedges. Recipe from: www.loveyourgut.com
Limoncello Drizzle Cake
Ingredients
250g Salted Butter
350g Golden Caster Sugar
4 Eggs
200g Self-raising Flour
100ml best quality Limoncello
6 tbsp Lemon Juice from a jar of Opies
Sliced Lemons
50g Soured Cream
250g tub full-fat Mascarpone Cheese
300g Icing Sugar
150ml Double Cream
To Decorate:
Opies Sliced Lemons
Meringue Kisses
Freshly peeled cucumber ribbons, dried on kitchen paper
Method
Preheat oven to 200°C / 180°C / Gas 4, then grease and line two 20cm cake tins. In a bowl or stand mixer, beat together the butter and 200g of the sugar until pale and creamy. Add the eggs, beating after each addition, then carefully fold in the flour.
In a separate bowl mix 75ml of the limoncello, 2 tbsp of the lemon juice and soured cream together, then add to the cake mixture. Divide between the cake tins then place in the oven for approximately 30 minutes until golden brown. Remove and leave to cool completely.
Meanwhile, add the rest of the sugar, another 2 tbsp of the lemon juice and limoncello into a small saucepan and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and gently simmer until you achieve a syrup-like consistency. Set aside to cool completely. In another separate bowl or using a stand mixer, add the mascarpone, remaining lemon juice, icing sugar and double cream and mix for 1-2 minutes or until stiff peaks form.
Once cakes are cooled remove them from the tin and place one cake on a stand. Using a spatula spread the top with mascarpone cream then position the second cake on top. Spread the remaining mascarpone thinly all over the sponge until all areas are covered and smooth.
Decorate the top of the cake with Opies Lemon Slices then pour over the limoncello syrup. Top with the ribbons of fresh cucumber and meringue kisses just before serving.

A Rural Utopia in the Heart of Ely
Who doesn’t like a little retail shopping at Bicester Village? It’s easily accessible, designer shops aplenty, numerous eateries and plenty of parking, so what if I told you in terms of a retail shopping village there’s a new kid on the block – Ben's Yard in Ely, Cambridgeshire.
Just an hour on the train from Kings Cross, Ben’s Yard is waiting to be explored. It’s a place where guests don't just visit, they experience a rural retreat that caters to their every wish. It’s a new haven for the whole family - sophisticated shopping, gastronomical delights, woodland walks, seasonal events and a playground the little people will love.
We were lucky enough to experience the magic of this rural delight on launch day. Rather than get the train we drove (an hour way) – There’s plenty of free parking, so whether you’re popping just for coffee and cake or for a full day of retail therapy, there’s no time limit on how long you can stay.
First stop, a little meander around Love Lane by Abi, a stylish and elegant home décor shop, brimming with exclusive, chic homewares all as beautiful as each other and all with affordable price tags, I just wanted to purchase everything!
Before wandering around the rest of the hand-picked independent retailers we stopped to refuel at Ben's Yard Restaurant. The inside is a botanical haven, think greens and neutrals with vines and greenery draped from the ceiling, a calming oasis in which to enjoy everything from breakfast to early dinner.
The menu is a seasonally inspired delight with dishes that don’t just look divine, they tantalise your tastebuds at each bite. Beginning with a refreshing glass of Whispering Angel wine (my favourite) we then began with Truffle & Honey Baked Camembert to share along with Prawn & Mango Salad and Tomato & Mozzarella Salad - all the dishes were impeccably presented and infused with fresh flavoursome ingredients.
For mains, hubby couldn’t resist the Prawn Linguine with tomato, fire roasted peppers, chilli, basil and citrus, the chilli created a slight kick to the
already delicious rich sauce. Seared Seabass served with pea, bacon & Stuntney Estate potato salad, rocket, and a pea & herb sauce was the other choice - the seabass was delightful and literally melted in the mouth with the flavours of the potato salad divinely fresh and flavoursome.
I really didn’t have room for dessert, but that wasn’t the case with hubby and he indulged in Crème Brulee, with Stuntney Estate shortbread, creamy and light, the perfect dish to finish with.
Pleasantly refuelled it was time to explore the rest of the enchanting shops in this village. Thatch & Roses is another favourite for me, a charming florist with some truly exquisite bouquets to choose from, not only is it a florist but it also sells an impressive selection of botanical accessories that will have you standing for hours trying to decide what to buy.
Freda & Bert has something for the whole family, the ideal shop to find unique gifts including scented candles, unusual gadgets, men’s grooming products, colourful children’s wooden toys, charming stationery and beautiful cards, another shop you’ll browse for hours in.
Of course us ladies are always looking to add to our wardrobes and Something About Rose will most definitely help us to do that. They have a fabulous collection of clothing, jewellery and accessories all at affordable prices, my only problem was I couldn’t decide between two outfits so I brought them both!
If you’re craving a beauty refresh, why not make an appointment at The Hair Company and if you can’t decide what to make for dinner, just before you leave why not grab some ingredients from Malloys Craft Butchery.
Fitness enthusiasts are not forgotten, as speedsters might prefer to power up the journey with a Spoke and Motor electric bike, there’s a thoughtfully created two-and-half-kilometre loop, designed with bikes and buggies in mind.
There are so many more areas to peruse, such as wildflower trails, woodland walks and of course the enchanting Ely Cathedral-inspired adventure playground.
They’ll be pop up shops and seasonal events aplenty, just keep an eye on the website.
Without doubt the vision five years ago that the founders Alastair and Victoria Morbey had, has well and truly been brought to life at this unique, rural, utopia – Ben’s Yard.

Sightseeing & Fine Dining on Bustronome
Bustronome, a play on words between Bus and Gastronomy is a high-end double-decker bus that has been converted into a fine-dining restaurant filled with good wine and delicious food – all whilst enjoying unparalleled views of London’s most iconic sights.
The food is meticulously prepared in the kitchen downstairs, whilst upstairs the roof of specially made glass provides 360 degree views of the landmarks, monuments and stunning views of the capital.
The duration is approximately 2 hours during which you enjoy a seasonal four-course menu (lunch) or sixcourse menu (evening) packed with local flavours, as you dine in a moving restaurant. There's an innovative audio guide on board which allows you to delve into the history of the Big Smoke as you pass its notable locations: Big Ben, St. Paul's Cathedral and more!
Each menu can either be paired with wine or you can buy drinks as you go.

‘Much Ado About Something’ at Billesley Manor Hotel & Spa
Nestled in 11 acres of alluring parkland with lush green lawns, formal flower gardens and gravel courtyards is grade II listed Billesley Manor Hotel & Spa, the epitome of luxury and the perfect place for a luxurious country retreat
Billesley Manor is conveniently located just five miles from Stratford-Upon-Avon, the historic birthplace of Shakespeare and is the ideal base for exploring this historic town and the surrounding Warwickshire countryside.
The estate is beautiful and begging to be explored, whether it’s croquet on the lawn, a game of tennis on the private courts, a glass of wine on the patio or just a walk around the extensive grounds, there’s something to suit everyone
Be sure to follow the footpath around the back of the hotel to the historic 11th century All Saints Church, where it’s rumoured in 1582 William Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway, though there is no definite proof there is definitely plenty of clues to suggest it’s true. Certainly his granddaughter, Elizabeth Nash, was married here in 1646.
There is also a suggestion that Shakespeare wrote ‘As You Like It’ in the now aptly named ‘As You Like It Lounge’ a wonderfully relaxing quirky space with large bay windows and comfy sofas but the crème de la crème in this room is the stunning instillation of books cascading across the
ceiling, most definitely a talking point and the ultimate space to play board games, sit and read a book or just relax with a coffee or glass of wine.
Throughout most of the hotel the sophisticated décor of traditional oak panelling, a rich palette of blues and golds, sumptuous sofas, quirky artwork and several grand fireplaces, flow effortlessly, creating a distinctive style and calming ambience.
. Billesley Manor houses 71 sumptuous rooms and suites –Our room was large and one of grandeur comprising of an elegant and expansive bedroom area, two large windowed alcoves showcasing effortlessly the beautifully manicured gardens and flowing fountain. The lounge area had a vibrant blue velvety sofa, coffee table and two velour armchairs in bright floral fabric adding splashes of vivid colour to the soft neutral hues of the rest of the room.
The bathroom was equally impressive and tempts you to have a much-deserved soak in the bath before wrapping yourself in the cosy robe and curling up in a chair to while away the time looking out onto the picturesque gardens.
Time certainly flys when you’re doing nothing and before we knew it, it was time for pre-dinner drinks in the atmospheric Great Hall Lounge and Bar. This 1920’s art deco lounge bar is overlooked from the galleried balcony above; grandeur and a relaxing atmosphere exude from all corners of the room.
Dinner is served in The Stuart Restaurant, split into two intimate wood panelled rooms, with high elegant ceilings and open fires. The menu offers modern British cuisine, with traditional dishes that are given sophisticated twists. After perusing the menu we decided to begin with compressed heritage tomato served with feta and basil emulsion and rabbit terrine served with mushroom emulsion and pickled vegetables, they say you eat with your eyes and both these dishes certainly had the aesthetic, what about the taste? The flavour combination from both dishes was an absolute delight.
We followed this with chicken supreme accompanied with butternut squash, roasted parsnips and spinach, a dish full of sumptuous flavours and textures that definitely elevated the palette. Lamb rump served with smoked mash, black olives, whipped goats cheese and anchovies was the other choice, cooked medium just as requested, the amalgamation of tastes complimented the meat effortlessly.
I most definitely didn’t have room for dessert, but hubby had spotted The Tonka Bean Panna Cotta that he just couldn’t resist and in his words, it was ‘the icing on the cake’ after a heavenly dining experience.
But the evening didn’t end here, it would have been sacrilege not to indulge in a night cap in The Great Hall Bar, soaking up the atmosphere whilst surrounded by the soft lighting, sumptuous armchairs (Shakespeare certainly wouldn’t have looked out of place sat here), and cosy fire whilst looking around at all the paintings and portraits that adorned the walls.
After a peaceful and restful night’s sleep and suitably nourished after breakfast, it was time to head up the spa for the ‘ESPA Inner Calm Massage’. A full body massage to quieten your mind, release tension and nourish your skin with holistic massage techniques personalised to your own physical and emotional needs. It enlightens the senses and sends you into a serene state of pure indulgence. Dimmed lights, beautiful aromas and soothing music add to the whole ambience of peace and tranquillity.
Treatment finished I floated out of the room into the pool area to enjoy some final tranquil time before I began my journey home.
There’s definitely ‘Much Ado About Something’ at Billesley Manor Hotel & Spa an unquestionable ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ full of history and elegance, where sophistication and serenity shine around every corner.

Heartbroken by a recent split, with her 30th birthday looming, she loses her job and her home in the same morning because of two swaggering, dishonest men - the boss who sexually harassed her and the flatmate sleeping with her behind his fiancee's back. But all Em can think about is catching a flight to attend her sister's wedding and see her dying mother.
With a record-breaking heatwave, and a serial killer making the streets unsafe, London is completely gridlocked. Em's life has always been full of men getting their own way, and today the scorched city teems with them standing between her and home. As Em's troubled past returns to haunt her, she refuses to let them win. Her defiance leads to shocking consequences that soon spiral wildly out of control.
In a world where men don't listen, and girls have no voice, one woman can change everything.
