THE EDITOR

t is not power that corrupts, but fear," said Aung San Suu Kyi, a Burmese politician, writer and 1991 Nobel Peace Prize winner, who is Myanmar's first and current State Counsellor. Suu Kyi became famous for bringing peaceful democracy to a country engulfed in violence, even though it cost her more than 10 years in prison. Whether you are for or against what may have happened in Burma during and after the 1990s, the diplomat's famous phrase still holds true today more than ever. In the United States, what has determined the direction of the democratic machine has been precisely that: fear. Fear of not succeeding in defeating Trump, fear of losing what little has been achieved in the midterm elections, fear of seeing the country go off on a tangent that has been built by everyone. A race that began as the most diverse in the country's history, with candidates of color, of immigrant origin, with women, entrepreneurs, and even billionaires, it seemed that the promise of an inclusive democracy was possible. But, again, fear prevailed. The possibility that a progressive proposal like that of Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren or Julian Castro would become a reality did not seem to fit in the imagination of the Democratic establishment, and the whispering behind the scenes became deafening when, out of nowhere, candidates like Kamala Harris and Beto O'Rourke got behind former Vice President Joe Biden, all in order to prevent the country from undergoing "real structural change.” Our cover story this week is dedicated, in large part, to Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, not in an apologetic or empty claim of melancholy, but as a timid reflection of "what might have been.” As long as fears outweigh wills, voices like those of Latinos, women, and immigrants in the country will continue to be taken for granted. It seems that America still prefers a known evil than an unknown good. DEL EDITOR

ESSAY MEXICAN WOMEN SET AN EXAMPLE

RESISTANCE THROUGH CARE

By | Por: LINA MARGARITA SALAS*

E

very year on March 8, women around the world organize to take to the streets, protest and show the world how gender-based violence impacts the way we live. This year, as always, women in Mexico organized and made the decision to march together, but this time, on Monday, March 9, by showing the country a day without them. As always, certain groups and individuals came out against the women on social media, in some cases minimizing the struggle, and others through direct attack.

ENGLISH But this year, the response to demonstrations was also violent. In social networks, pamphlets and street signs, the protesters were met with threats from people who proposed to join them in order to attack them, prevent their demonstration and, in the most violent cases, throw acid on them in the streets. The threats are not entirely surprising, but yet another face of a structure that attacks the dignity and life of women. It’s the same structure they protest. So, in the face of explicit and intentional intimidation, how should we respond? With resistance, but not the resistance of weapons and force, but the resistance of care.

SETTING AN EXAMPLE

ENGLISH ring tips to protect themselves during attack and escape mechanisms in the event of violence against their lives. This –the most tangible example of the way in which violence against protestors is represented– is a direct reflection of what it means to resist from a position of care. Their strategy was not to find targets and train for violence, but respond inwards and towards the collective. While this means, in millions of cases, feeling even more vulnerable, this is how we not only keep our integrity intact, but also how we ensure that our struggle is coherent and that it grows. We have organized women's self-defense groups across the continent.

DIFFERENT FORMS OF RESISTANCE

bat forms of violence against women through safety that spawns from coming together, telling our stories after years of silence, and giving each other tools, real or symbolic, to respond to the fear and paralysis of aggression. That is, in the end, what the aggressions against feminism seek: to paralyze our revolution. That is why we resist while we keep moving, and are rebellious in caring. We do not learn techniques to attack and harm, but to know our bodies and protect ourselves when vulnerable. We don't learn to stand together to hurt our oppressors but to rebuild a social fabric that allows us to live instead of surviving.

THE PERSISTENCE OF INJUSTICE

VOTER SUPPRESSION IN 2020 MANY CITIZENS HAD TO WAIT UP TO SIX HOURS TO VOTE DURING SUPER TUESDAY. IS THE SUPPRESSION OF VOTES STILL IN EFFECT? n March 3, the entire country saw the national political scene take shape during the Democratic Primaries as 14 states: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, and Virginia gave candidates a bulk of the delegates needed to move closer to the presidential nomination. This was not only about millions of votes but also about a key challenge for the Democratic National Committee's organization, which had to prove itself equal to the risk to democracy.

THE RESULT LEFT MUCH TO BE DESIRED.

Between failures in the electronic voting system and the inability of the voting centers to receive masses of voters, the elephant in the room was again the reality of voter suppression.

SHELBY V. HOLDER

As reported by CNN, several voters in states such as Texas –many of them curiously of color– "waited in huge lines" to vote in the Democratic primary on Super Tuesday, “reminding the nation of the high cost of the Supreme Court's 2013 Shelby v. Holder decision to repeal voting rights enforcement” Shelby v. Holder required states to get federal clearance before they could make changes to their voting laws, focusing on areas of the country where past discrimination was highest. A by-product has been the closing of many polling places in areas with high nonwhite populations.

LONG LINES DO NOT MEAN HIGH TURNOUT

This ruling "has produced total chaos" in recent elections such as the Democratic Primary where "people lined up for more than five hours to cast their ballots, long after the polls had officially closed.”

8•

ENGLISH “These long lines to some extent indicate unexpectedly high voter turnout -- but they also evoke statewide efforts at voter suppression that have gone unabated since 2013,” CNN added. “In Texas, at least 750 polling places have been closed since then, forcing many predominantly black and brown people to travel longer distances to exercise their citizenship rights.” For Zachary Roth, a fellow at the Brennan Center for Justice and author of The Great Suppression: Voting Rights, Corporate Cash, and the Conservative Assault on Democracy, what happened in Texas on Super Tuesday is part of the Republican strategy "to make it harder for racial minorities and students to vote," he told Newsweek. As these states become “increasingly diverse” –especially with the exponential growth of Latino communities and communities of color– the risk for Republicans is that they will lose control of the historically "red" South. "[Texas Republicans] passed a very strict voter ID bill that was found by a federal court to be racially discriminatory," Roth said. "They made voter registration more difficult by imposing all of these rules on voter registration groups to make it harder to go out and register new voters. There's just been a concerted effort."

E

MARCH 18 - 25, 2020

Over the past few weeks, the blow to the world economy has been felt, and Latin America has been no exception.

ENGLISH been recorded in the Dominican Republic (1), Guatemala (1), Guyana (1), Ecuador (2) and one more in Argentina. While the distance between Latin America and Wuhan served as an important protective factor that delayed the arrival of the virus, as it spread through Europe, its potential transmission routes to the Americas also increased. At the moment, it is uncertain how the spread of the disease will continue, because several factors come into play: environmental conditions, how quickly people with symptoms of potential contagion go to medical centers, prevention measures imposed by governments, and simply chance, which will determine which individual in each age group and health condition is exposed to contagion. However, it can be expected that it will continue to grow, the question is how much and how fast.

ECONOMIC HAVOC

Over the past few weeks, the blow to the world economy has been felt, and Latin America has been no exception. The massive quarantines imposed by the Chinese government to contain the epidemic, as well as the widespread fear of contagion, have reduced the consumption of the general population, the production of industries across the globe, as well as the purchase of raw materials, their transportation and, consequently, oil consumption. The reduction in oil demand has impacted its price, which has fallen by 20%, particularly after the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) failed to convince Russia and Kazakhstan to reduce their oil production by 1.5 million barrels per day in order to regulate the fall in prices. In response, Saudi Arabia increased its production to over 10 million barrels per day and reduced the price of its official sales. This is a major problem for several Latin American economies, especially Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador, which are highly dependent on oil sales, and to a lesser extent Brazil and Argentina. The impact will also be seen in the sale of other commodities, such as steel, due to the general slowdown in the production of goods. Given that the continent's economy is largely sustained by the produc-

10 •

tion of raw materials, the impact will be felt, but there will be variations from one country to another. Capital Economics has estimated that Mexico's economic growth will fall from an estimated 0.5% to 0.3%, Colombia's from 2.8% to 2.5%, Peru's from 4% to 3.3%, Brazil's from 1.5% to 1.3% and Argentina's, which was expecting a 0.5% contraction, will fall by 1%. In a continent that was already strongly shaken last year by a wave of protests caused by social inequality, the economic havoc can have an impact on the capacity of countries to make social investment and the economic gap will likely expand.

THE GLOBAL ECONOMY HAS CORONAVIRUS

According to estimates by UNCTAD's Division on Globalization and Development Strategies, the global economy is likely to contract by two percent this year, which would translate into $1 trillion," Richard Kozul-Wright, director of that division, told UN News. The same agency estimated that in the worst case scenario, the shock could reach $2 trillion. What this shows is a market with an overwhelming level of anxiety, perhaps even greater than any concerns about the health consequences of the pandemic. Certainly, during the next few weeks we will see not only how the viral pandemic evolves, but also the economic one and the consequent readjustment in the weights of international power.

The #coronavirus outbreak could cost the global economy up to $2 trillion this year.@UNCTAD is calling on governments to take urgent steps to reduce the economic impact. https://t.co/ bFGE9SZemC #COVID19pic. twitter.com/EUkvKzJtwb — United Nations (@UN) March 9, 2020 La misma agencia estimó que en el peor de los escenarios posibles, el golpe podría llegar a ser de 2 trillones.

BE PROUD OF YOUR HAIR OVER A HUNDRED LOVE STORIES ABOUT THE HAIR OF BLACK AND AFRO-LATINO WOMEN. MÁS DE CIEN HISTORIAS DE AMOR POR EL CABELLO DE MUJERES NEGRAS Y AFROLATINAS. ENGLISH

P

eople of African descent still struggle with prejudice about the texture and appearance of their hair. Having "good or bad hair" has become a type of social injustice that many women face in the form of straightening their hair to look more professional workplaces, or even for wearing wigs. They even live with discrimination, like in an instance that occurred in Texas a few years ago, where students with dreadlocks could not attend their graduation ceremony unless they were cut off.

THE CROWN ACT

Before the passage of the Crown Act in many states - first in California, and recently in Texas, Washington, Colorado and New York - a regulation that prohibits discrimination on the basis of hair — studies reported black women experiencing social pressure because of the texture of their hair as "unique." Not only were they denied in many spaces to wear it naturally, but they were made to feel they were breaking a rule of beauty-related, of course, to whiteness. It's forced an unnecessary choice between defending the naturalness of one's hair as part of racial identity and taming it.

People of African descent still struggle with prejudice about the texture and appearance of their hair.

MARCH 18 - 25, 2020

Photographer St. Clair Detrick-Jules and her younger sister, Khloe, are of Afro-Caribbean descent. When Khloe was four years old, kids at her school began making fun of her hair. In response, Detrick-Jules decided to show her sister why, instead of feeling bad or angry, she should see how beautiful her natural hair is. For almost two years, the recent graduate of Brown University interviewed and photographed 101 black women and girls between the ages of four and 65 who had natural hair. The result was Dear Khloe: Love Letters to My Little Sister, a truly inspiring work that explores the relationship between women of color and their hair. "As a black woman, the older sister of two young black women, and as a filmmaker and photographer, I felt I not only had the ability to create this project but also the responsibility to do so,” she said. "I did this book because it's one thing to tell young women to love themselves and another to show them," explains Detrick-Jules.

L

AMLO'S WALL THAT KILLED SENAIDA IN HER ATTEMPT TO REACH THE UNITED STATES

The migration control policies adopted by the government of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador have had very concrete impacts on the lives of the thousands of migrants who continue trying to cross Mexico to reach the United States; sometimes with fatal consequences. This is the story of Senaida Escobar, a 19-year-old Salvadoran woman. "When the officers understood that the vehicle in which the migrants were travelling was not going to stop, they loaded their long guns and aimed at the tires. But as the bullets ended up bouncing off the pavement, the officers looked up and fired into the cab of the pick-up. The large-caliber ammunition, which leaves a trail of thunderous sound as it breaks the wind coming in gusts, broke glass and went through everything in front of it."

ARMANDO INFO VENEZUELA THE 'GARIMPEIROS' OF SALT"

The very complex economic conditions that Venezuela is going through have forced its citizens to find strange ways of survival. This chronicle shows an unexpected form of illegal trafficking that emerged in this context: that of salt. "Cruz José and many others spend their days extracting the mineral illegally - though perhaps consensually - and unhealthily in the middle of the pink waters of the Laguna Madre, where the natural source of the salt is exploited. The deposit is owned by the state and Enasal, the company entrusted by law with its exploitation. However, now it barely gives enough to remind Cruz José and others like him why the word 'salary' comes from 'salt'.

URGENT PORTRAITS: GENOCIDAIRES AND WITNESSES OF TRIALS AGAINST HUMANITY

In 2010, the Argentine Supreme Court prohibited the taking of photographs or video records during trials to ensure the safety of witnesses, but in doing so it also made victims and perpetrators invisible. In response, Eugenia Bekeris and Paula Doberti began attending trials, mostly related to crimes against humanity, to portray the parties. "Although the original initiative was aimed at registering genocidaires, the work gradually shifted towards the survivors and their families, referents of organisms and all those who made an effort to keep the process of memory, truth and justice alive and active. Democratic Primary that began with the most diverse candidate pool in history has been reduced once again to a white and male nominee who seems to represent the interests of the system rather than the electorate. Of all the end-of-campaign announcements, one of the most talked about and felt nationally was that of Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, the candidate who not only made it to the end with her head held high, but who came with a real "plan for everything.” It is fitting that during this Women's Month we dedicate a few pages to the candidate's campaign and what her withdrawal means for our community.

A GREAT STRUCTURAL CHANGE

Not surprisingly, after the failure of the Clinton campaign in 2016, and in the face of a candidate who stands for misogyny like Donald Trump, the Democratic primaries were filled with women convinced that they were a reasonable choice for the Democratic Party in the 2020 election. In September 2018, Elizabeth Warren announced her intentions to run in the Democratic primary with the establishment of an exploratory committee. Five months later, her candidacy was a fact.

Warren was still falling short of the expectations of a system that still believes that the only way to beat Donald Trump is to play his own game.

ENGLISH Under the banner of unifying the party with progressive approaches, Warren promised a struggle "for great structural change" in the country, which included reversing the power structure and putting the people first. "It will not be enough to undo the terrible acts of this administration," she said in announcing her candidacy. "We cannot afford to play a little: a tax credit here, a regulation there. Our fight is for a great structural change. Our fight is for a major structural change. This is the fight of our lives, the fight to build an America where dreams are possible, an America that works for everyone.” From that moment on, the national media called her "the conservatives' favorite target," warning that her profile might be more "divisive" than encouraging to the Democratic bench. Previous setbacks such as the issue with her Native American ancestry, and her liberal agenda, made her an unlikely candidate from the start. But nevertheless, she persisted.

WHEN SEXISM IS AT ITS STRONGEST

Once in the race, and competing with heavyweights at both ends of the political spectrum such as Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and former Vice President Joe Biden, Warren's campaign drew strength from its appeal to young communities of color, and among the bulk of educated people in the country. While Bernie Sanders' positions –grassroots politics, free education and health care, for example– were similar to Warren's, it seemed that only one factor prevented her from breaking through the barrier: being a woman.

ENGLISH By August 2019, Warren was going toe-to-toe with Sanders and Biden in the polls, standing out for her simple, direct and inspiring speech, advocating a liberal agenda and far outpacing her opponents in the national debates. Infrastructure, trade, taxes and the transformation of the economy towards sustainable energy mechanisms were part of her coherent plan to solve the lack of jobs, economic and social disparity and, at the same time, help fight climate change. However, the last months of her campaign were obstructed by the aggressive phenomenon of gender politics in the country. After the Super Tuesday elections, her supporters dropped their arms and announced the inevitable: Warren had to withdraw. "Warren has had a consistent gender imbalance when it comes to male and female voters," Ella Nilsen wrote in her analysis for Vox. "While she typically performs well among women (both in her home state and nationally), men present much more of a challenge. That was true on Super Tuesday as well.” It didn't help that she had raised well over $100 million, had –literally– a plan for everything, and took the podiums in every debate. Warren was still falling short of the expectations of a system that still believes that the only way to beat Donald Trump is to play his own game. MARCH 18 - 25, 2020

"Her victory wouldn’t be a victory for “women,” but a victory that affirmed a woman could succeed without being anything but her specific self," wrote Ana Marie Cox, host of the "With Friends Like These" podcast, in her column for The Atlantic.

THE LAST VOICE FOR THE MINORITIES

By mid-March, the Democratic primary picture was even sadder: Joe Biden was advancing enough in delegate numbers to anticipate that he would eventually be the party's nominee. With a coalition of support from former candidates and much of the Democratic system, the former vice president seems increasingly comfortable in the lead, leaving behind an exhausted Sanders and half the country, again, without representation.

ENGLISH Ever since former Housing Secretary Julian Castro rolled up his sleeves and got behind the Warren campaign, the country's minorities – women and Hispanics, especially– were waiting for one of the progressive candidates to finally bring his/ her political projects to fruition to include us all. While Sanders had Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at his big campaign rallies, and Biden was struggling to get answers from Hispanic community leaders during the primaries, Warren was publishing a detailed blueprint for Latinos in the country. “From Tejano ranchers losing their land in the Southwest to students punished for speaking Spanish in school to toxic dumping in Puerto Rico, the United States has a long-history of government-sanctioned injustices against Latinos,” her project read. “Yet, at every turn in our nation’s history, Latinos, Latinas and Latinx people have been at the forefront of the fight for social, racial and economic justice -- leading with bold, unwavering courage and unshakable hope.” A Pre-K12 education plan, a debt relief plan for Puerto Rico, reshaping the immigration system,

ending mass incarceration, climate justice, and even closing the wage gap between Latinas and the rest of the country, Warren, again, had a plan for everything. But the country, and the system, seemed not ready for real, structural change.

ARE THE LATINOS GOING BACK TO OBLIVION?

The results of key votes like Super Tuesday showed that a large part of the young Latino vote in the country is leaning towards progressive proposals like those of Senator Sanders, who won states like California with 49% of the support of the Hispanic community. This has been a sustained trend since early states like Iowa and Nevada, where Sanders also got strong support from the Latino community. Chuck Rocha, one of the Sanders campaign's top advisors, told NBC News on Tuesday that Sanders proved “if you invest in the Latino community, they will show up and vote for you in huge margins.”

MARCH 18 - 25, 2020

“If you invest in the Latino community, they will show up and vote for you in huge margins.” This seems to be because the campaign's strategy has been to focus on voters who register without party preference, who very often are also Latinos. For his part, former Vice President Joe Biden has had the support of the African-American community across the country, but has not offered a solid vision for Latinos. For Albert Morales, political director of Latino Decisions, "Biden will have to do a better job" in attracting Hispanic voters, especially if he wants to win over states like Florida and the Puerto Rican vote on the mainland. “This 2020 election primary cycle will forever be known as the one where the presumptive Democratic nominee didn't need Latino voters to propel him to the nomination,” wrote Julio Ricardo Varela, a Puerto Rican rights activist and founder of Latino Rebels, on Twitter. “I find that fascinating and am thinking a lot about that.” “Biden rode the support of Black voters, white suburban voters and older voters,” he added. “The data will (show) that he did not win over Latino voters, especially younger ones, in the primary. In the end, he didn't need them. Think about that.” The sad paradox is that, unlike 2016, this year Latinos are paying much more attention to politics, according to the Pew Research Center, which said in a recent report that: "among registered Latino voters, nearly nine out of ten Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters (87%) say it really matters who wins the White House.” Yet, again, it seems that no one is really paying attention to us.

CULTURA MOVIES SHOULD STOP VICTIMIZING MIGRANTS

LINA FROM LIMA CHILEAN DIRECTOR MARÍA PAZ GONZÁLEZ’S NEW MUSICAL COMEDY TELLS THE STORY OF A PERUVIAN DOMESTIC WORKER IN CHILE.

LA DIRECTORA CHILENA MARÍA PAZ GONZÁLEZ ABORDA EN "LINA DE LIMA" (2019) LA HISTORIA DE UNA TRABAJADORA DOMÉSTICA PERUANA EN CHILE. PERO LO HACE EN CLAVE DE COMEDIA MUSICAL. ENGLISH

One of the things I like best about "Lina from Lima" is that the story tells us not to make Lina a victim. Why did you make this decision? The film was born out of an investigation in which I immersed myself in the reality of many migrant women. What I found was a world of strong, funny and luminous women who also find, in the distance, and perhaps for the first time, a space of their own where they can see themselves. For me, it was very important to rescue that energy to give life to a multifaceted female character who carries the economic weight and the emotional deficiencies that living and working outside her country gives her, but who is also an empowered woman willing to get what she wants. I watched many films about migration and I found that the victimization of the characters is almost a feature of migrant plots. But real people also have a special strength that is unique.

Identity is something very present in the film through music... To what extent is the music of a country the best expression of its roots? When you think about the place of origin, memory usually brings back songs, textures and smells. That's why food is also a very powerful source of identity. I am a great admirer of Peruvian culture and the connection that it has with the landscape, with the language and with the roots is very powerful. For the film, I researched Peruvian music a lot and we worked from rhythms that come from different regions of Peru. We invented lyrics and brought the inner world of Lina to life.

Lina is also a story of sexual awakening. For me, Lina is a woman who has spent much of her life working for the desires and needs of another — her mother, her son, her former partner. Sexuali-

THE LATINA FILMMAKER PERSPECTIVE As a Latina filmmaker, is there a different viewpoint for you than that of a male director? I think that women usually look at the world from a place that is displaced from the center. Their look seems to me much freer, more complex and necessary to think about the new times. We have to stop seeing women festivals and quotas as an invasion, and see it more as an opportunity to refresh and free ourselves a little from a hegemonic viewpoint that makes less and less sense.

A PAINTER AND POET

The book begins with a tennis match between Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, the Italian painter who invented chiaroscuro and changed the history of art, and Francisco de Quevedo y Villegas, one of the greatest scribes of Spanish poetry. The match plays out throughout the book. While Caravaggio and Quevedo serve, defend and trade points and insults with each other, Enrigue takes the reader through the history of Italy, Spain and Mexico. WORTHY OF MERIT

This description is frantic because the novel is a vortex. Towards the end of the book, as the reader starts to dread its ending, Enrigue opens a confessional: "I don't know, as I write it, what this book is about. What does it tell? It's not exactly about a tennis match. Nor is it a book about the slow and mysterious integration of America into what we obscenely call 'the Western world' - for Americans, Europe is the East. Maybe it is a book that is only about how this book could be told, maybe all books are only about that. A book with ups and downs, like a game of tennis. [...] I don't know what this book is about. I know I wrote it in rage because the bad guys always win. Maybe all books are written only because the bad guys play to their advantage and that's unbearable." The merits of Sudden Death are plenty, so many that it won Enrigue the Herralde Nobel Prize in 2013 –one of the greatest awards that the Spanish language has today. But the greatest achievement of all is to manage to build a strange, dirty, and dizzying world, for the first time round as a tennis ball, and keep it standing, even if it's just so we can see how it falls apart, sunk in the greed of the powerful and the loneliness of the poor.

Cano, who brought Robles' story to light in the book Andar de soldado viejo, told El País. For the historian, who studies how the social roles of both sexes were constructed at the beginning of the century, the colonel was neither a transvestite, nor a lesbian woman who adopted male behavior, but a transgender man in a binary society. "Armed conflicts are often idealized, but they were extreme contexts of death, suffering, and pain, and it is in the war that the gender parameters that existed are shifted," she concludes.

MACHO AND ARMED

They demanded land and freedom for the underprivileged classes. Still, in Emiliano Zapata's revolution against the neoliberalism of the Porfirio regime, homosexuality was perceived as the worst form of cowardice and the women who fought with them, the famous Adelitas, rarely achieved positions of power in the chain of command. They tiptoed through history, and many of them, said the University of Querétaro researcher Claudia Ceja, had to disguise themselves as men to avoid being raped or abused. "Women were always present, but they were never recognized in the army or by their partners," she said. "There is a silence in historiography, and the sources of the time only throw out information on a piecemeal basis." In this fierce and sexist context, Amelio Robles not only survived but ended up joining the federal army at a time, 1918, when the conflict was about to end. She even achieved what no biological woman had ever done before by joining the Socialist Party of Guerrero in the 1930s and was honored in 1978 as a war veteran.

The bid of an unregistered fictitious name shall be forfeited as if the bidder failed to meet the terms of sale. All bidders are advised to remain at the sale until after the last property is sold. The Sheriff reserves the right to resell any property at any time before the end of the sale, upon the successful bidders’ failure to tender the required deposit. The Sheriff reserves the right to postpone or stay the sale of any property in which the attorney on the writ has not appeared and is not present at the sale. Prospective purchasers are directed to the Web site of the Philadelphia Bureau of Revision of Taxes, (BRT) brtweb.phila.gov for a fuller description of the properties listed. Properties can be looked up by the BRT number – which should be cross checked with the address. Prospective purchasers are also directed to the Room 154 City Hall, 215686-1483 and to its website philadox.phila.gov and to its website at http://philadox.phila.gov where they can view the deed to each individual property and find the boundaries of the property. PROSPECTIVE PURCHASERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR DETERMINING THE NATURE, LOCATION, CONDITION AND BOUNDARIES OF THE PROPERTIES THEY SEEK TO PURCHASE. The BRT # refers to a unique number assigned by the City Bureau of Revision of Taxes to each property in the City for the purpose of assessing it for taxes. This number can be used to obtain descriptive information about the property from the BRT website. Effective Date: July 7, 2006 NOTICE OF SCHEDULE OF DISTRIBUTION The Sheriff will file in his office, The Land Title Building, 100 South Broad Street, 5th Floor, a Schedule of Distribution Thirty (30) Days from the date of the sale of Real Estate. Distribution will be made in accordance with the Schedule unless exceptions are filed thereto within ten (10) days thereafter. The name first appearing in each notice is that of the defendant in the writ whose

property is being sold. All Writs are Writs of Executions. The letters C.P., Court of Common Pleas; O.C., Orphans’ Court; Q.S., Court of Quarter Sessions; C.C., County Court - indicate the Court out of which the writ of execution issues under which the sale is made: S. 1941. 223. means September Term, 1941. 223, the term and number of the docket entry; the figures following show the amount of debt; and the name following is that of the attorney issuing the writ. Attention is called to the provisions of Act No.104, approved July 27, 1955, which requires owners of properties which are used, designed or intended to be used by three or more families, or of commercial establishments which contain one or more dwelling units, to deliver to the buyers of such properties a use registration permit at the time of settlement, under certain terms and conditions. Sheriff Sales are not subject to provisions of the said Act and the Sheriff will, therefore, not deliver use registration permits in connection with any sales conducted by him. Very truly yours, ROCHELLE BILAL Sheriff City and County of Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA COMMISSION ON PARKS AND RECREATION

Wire Bending & Welding will train JOVIN INC. 160 Delsea Drive Sewell NJ 08080

LEGALES

215-789-6971

A request for a copy of the solicitation should be directed to vanessa.martin@pha.phila.gov. Interested parties can also visit www.pha.phila.gov and click on Business Opportunity for more details. PHA encourages minority, woman-owned and Section 3 businesses to submit bids and participate in joint ventures.

This notice is to solicit the submission of applications by those interested in serving on the Commission on Parks and Recreation. The deadline to apply is April 22, 2020. In 2008, the voters of Philadelphia approved an amendment to the Philadelphia Home Rule Charter to create a new unified Department of Parks and Recreation. The voters also authorized the creation of a new Commission on Parks and Recreation to help guide the department. Every four years, the Mayor appoints nine members of the Commission from a list of nominees submitted by City Council. The current appointees’ terms will expire later this year, and it is now time for Council to develop the next list of nominees. The Commission’s responsibilities include the following: • Develop written standards and guidelines related to land use, preservation of green space, watershed management, sustainability, and the conveyance and acquisition of park and recreation land and facilities; • Advise and assist the Parks and Recreation Commissioner and other supporting organizations to promote and enhance the image of the Fairmount Park system and City recreation facilities; • Expand and diversify funding sources to support park and recreation facilities; and •Hold public meetings at least quarterly to provide an opportunity for public input. Those interested in serving on the Commission must complete an application form that will be available as of March 18, 2020 at www.phlcouncil.com/PaRC; at the Chief Clerk’s Office (Room 402 City Hall); and at Philadelphia libraries and recreation centers. City Council’s Committee on Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs will hold public hearings on Friday, May 8, 2020 from 9 AM to 1 PM; and Monday, May 11, 2020, from 1 PM to 5 PM in Room 400 City Hall. Every applicant will have an opportunity to speak at one of the hearings. Council will then nominate 18-25 individuals, from whom the Mayor will appoint nine Commissioners. Those nine appointees, together with six ex officio Commissioners, will constitute the 15-member Commission. Please consult the application form for further details. Darrell L.
